Second Impeachment of Donald J. Trump: Viewing Thread
by Anonymous | reply 455 | January 26, 2021 10:13 PM |
I love that CNN just cut away from that midget, Gym Jordan.
These Republican representatives are so full of shit with their “WhY dOn’T dEmOcRaTs WaNt To UnIfY tHe CoUnTrY?” There’s overwhelming public consensus that Trump incited the insurrection. Why don’t fucking Republicans unify the country around impeaching the cocksucker? I don’t understand why they’re trying to appeal to his ever-dwindling base. Cunts.

Why don't they wait til the investigations are done? I'm sure by then they can add an 's' to 'article of impeachment'.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 13, 2021 2:32 PM |
It needs to proceed because it is the right thing to do on principle, but I feel like I may have just figured out McConnell's game. He wants Trump ruined and then he will exploit the Dems rush of the process in the midterms. I'm wrong if it makes the Senate and he votes to convict but if he wiggles out somehow - abstains, gets the flu - this was his scam.

Not spinning or covering for anyone. Just stating the chilling reality.
This is why Republicans should have asserted themselves and held Trump accountable from Day One. Their silence in the face of his manifest abuses contributed to the formation of a cult that now threatens their lives. Never should have come to this.

He and Trump have the same "keep screaming" technique of communication. It creates a panic in the listener that is somewhat hypnotic. If you respond quietly, they shout you down again. If you shout back, it's 2 people screaming. They never lose an argument because it always ends in a draw, at worst.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 13, 2021 4:49 PM |
Dems need to start quoting the president's bullshit. Start laying out the fucking facts of how he incited this stuff. It's all out there. Fuck, we look like little weaklings. The Senate is in recess until Jan. 19, the day before Biden's inauguration.

The good news is that I think we're going to be seeing more and more shocking evidence that will make it difficult for GOP Senators to vote against conviction.

You can't pardon an impeachment, for the love of god. Impeachment is an indictment, not a conviction.
Trump being convicted after he's out of office means no pardon for him. That's one of the perks of convicting him later instead of now.

by Anonymous | reply 330 | January 13, 2021 9:12 PM |
It needs to proceed because it is the right thing to do on principle, but I feel like I may have just figured out McConnell's game. He wants Trump ruined and then he will exploit the Dems rush of the process in the midterms. I'm wrong if it makes the Senate and he votes to convict but if he wiggles out somehow - abstains, gets the flu - this was his scam.
I don't disagree that this is a political calculation on McConnell's part, however, since Dump went out in public earlier this week & clearly threatened violence again (and god knows what the fuck else he & Pompeo are up to), I think the dems had to act clearly to demonstrate that were at least*attempting* to put some sort of restraint on the president, unlike the repigs who seemed to be content to just hide his phone and duck his calls.
I realize this is just who he is, but I wish for once McConnell could drop the *calculation* bullshit - he's an old man at the end of the anyway - and do what's right for the country as oppose to devising the best method to fuck over Chuck Schumer. Yes, I realize, this is who he is, but you think almost being killed by a mob by the man you've supported the last 4 years might give you some perspective

Except that by the time the midterms roll around Trump will be in the thick of a trial(s) in New York State, and probably DC as well. That "rushed impeachment" argument won't fly.

^Because IRL justice doesn't move like a Law and Order episode, unfortunately. Still, everyone of them should have already been arrested and charged like Democrats are at protests. From Occupy Wall Street where 8,000 people were easily arrested.
Among those arrested in the raid was New York City Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez. He was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and then held in a police van alone for two hours. Rodriguez’s arrest came just a week after he helped organized an 11-mile march from the his district in the Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights, a largely immigrant community, to Occupy Wall Street.

Let's see if they can win back white women and young white and latino men. Whatever it was that drew those people to Trump, and fanatically like teen girls to a boyband, likely will not be satiated with old school female Republicans. They could lose them to a Trump party or Trump political movement going to third party candidates in the short term. They could just lose young males who will stay home. It will be interesting to see how all this settles but no Republican is going to be able to come in and take up where Trump left off. They are very fractured.

"18 U.S. Code § 2381 - Treason: Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States."
This is a discussion by a US Justice official and a Professor of Law on its interpretation: "The offense of “levying war” against the United States was interpreted narrowly in Ex parte Bollman & Swarthout (1807), a case stemming from the infamous alleged plot led by former Vice President Aaron Burr to overthrow the American government in New Orleans. The Supreme Court dismissed charges of treason that had been brought against two of Burr’s associates—Bollman and Swarthout—on the grounds that their alleged conduct did not constitute levying war against the United States within the meaning of the Treason Clause. It was not enough, Chief Justice John Marshall’s opinion emphasized, merely to conspire “to subvert by force the government of our country” by recruiting troops, procuring maps, and drawing up plans. Conspiring to levy war was distinct from actually levying war. Rather, a person could be convicted of treason for levying war only if there was an “actual assemblage of men for the purpose of executing a treasonable design.” In so holding, the Court sharply confined the scope of the offense of treason by levying war against the United States. "
I also read that the reason hardly anyone is indicted for Treason is that the law specifies conviction can only come from confession in open court or the testimony of at least two witnesses. It's normally hard to find the two witnesses. Well...

What is Miss Lindsey doing frantically calling Senators to reject impeachment before the trial? Did Trump tell him the Russians will expose all his gay secrets if he doesn’t fall in line?
by Anonymous | reply 412 | January 14, 2021 3:32 AM |
I hope the impeachment trial includes all the collusion with the WH, Trump, Rudy, R Congress members etc to plan the insurrection. THEN if Republicans vote no they will just deal their own doom.
by Anonymous | reply 413 | January 14, 2021 5:01 AM |
I know people are angry that McConnell won't call the Senate back for an emergency session, but we WANT the vote to be after the new senators are sworn in and with a different Majority Leader. It increases our chances of conviction, and convicting him after his term means he will not get a pardon. It also means there will likely be evidence shown toward prosecution, which didn't happen during the last trial.

[quote]What is Miss Lindsey doing frantically calling Senators to reject impeachment before the trial?
Senators don't impeach, they convict.
Lindsey calling senators now is a waste of time, if some of that shocking evidence that comes out in the trial turns out to be bad for the GOP, they're going to want to get rid of Trump and distance themselves from him even more than they already are.
by Anonymous | reply 415 | January 14, 2021 11:48 AM |
At this point, I think it's 50-50 whether there will even be a trial in the Senate -- Joe would prefer it not happen, and there will be a battle over whether the Senate has jurisdiction to try a former president. Could that question end up in the Supreme Court if Republican senators press the issue?

Nobody can pardon an impeachment conviction.

by Anonymous | reply 419 | January 14, 2021 1:16 PM |
R418, Trump is reportedly threatening to pardon himself prior to his last day. If he does, it'll be a battle in the courts after he's out of office to decide whether he can or not. SCOTUS probably will ultimately say no, but with a stacked SCOTUS, that's not guaranteed.
Also, we want to avoid Trump dragging us down further if we can, and a legal battle after he's out of office won't do anyone any good.
by Anonymous | reply 420 | January 14, 2021 1:31 PM |
That still wouldn’t have anything to do with the impeachment. Let him try to pardon himself until the cows come home. It’s zero to do with impeachment.
If he pardons himself he’s legally wide open if SCOTUS rules he can’t do that. He would no longer have the 5th Amendment protection.
Regardless of what he wants to do and the optics of it, no lawyer worth his salt will advise him to try it.

His pardon wouldn't have anything to do with the crime he's just been indicted for? Ridiculous.
No one said he had attorneys who were advising him to do this. He rarely listens to his attorneys.
Don't say stupid things just to try to win an argument, it's not worth it.

No, you fucking muppet, it wouldn’t. Nobody has the power to overturn an impeachment. It’s the only way to oust a sitting president after being convicted for high crimes or misdemeanors.
How the fuck do you think impeachment works? The House impeaches, the Senate convicts but the president can just pardon himself and remain in power? That doesn’t make any sense at all.
JFC.

I have to watch myself on Facebook and other webpages discussing all of this insurrectionist twaddle. I am so afraid of saying something odious myself. I don't want to get into trouble myself; I've already been in FB jail twice last year for saying things that went against policy. But like so many of you here, I'm so fucking angry and afraid, I can't help but think these faults. And I am sure the right wing wants to get a reaction out of us so we can really start a civil war.

Not long after Trump's inauguration, some MAGA types talked about impeaching Obama. I thought that was pretty fucking crazy since he was already out of office. Did any politicians promote that idea? When I've searched the web about this, I've come up with stories about impeaching Obama during his term. I don't how to separate out post-term calls for impeachment.

Thanks, R426. That's a good guide. I found this part worth noting:
[quote]Conviction in an impeachment trial would not automatically disqualify Mr. Trump from future public office. But if the Senate were to convict him, the Constitution allows a subsequent vote to bar an official from holding “any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States.”
[quote]That vote would require only a simple majority of senators. Such a step could be an appealing prospect not just to Democrats, but also to many Republicans who either have set their sights on the presidency themselves or are convinced that it is the only thing that will purge Mr. Trump from their party. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, is said to hold the latter view.
I think the determining factor will be the info that's coming out daily about the extent of the danger to Pence et al, the level of violence aimed at individual police who were trying to stop the rioters, and most important, the degree of collusion by individual congress members/their staff and Federal officials. The worse the picture gets, the more R senators will want to distance themselves from Trump and throttle his influence on the party.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet, R443. With all the insanely incriminating news that's coming out daily, there'll be more lining up on the Convict side before the senate brings this to trial.
As Frank Figluzzi ( former assistant director for counterintelligence at the FBI, frequent talking head) said today, the Federal Government was under attack - how come Trump wasn't immediately brought to the Presidential bunker?

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I would think that the majority of them realize he’s going to split the Republican Party in two if he follows through with his Patriot Party, which will jeopardize all of their job security. It seems most logical to me to take the shot to get rid of him now while they have it. I’m not sure what reasonable argument there is for allowing him to remain qualified to run for federal office again.

To me, there should be no rush to start this trial.
Delaying the trial start date allows for much more information about the insurrection to be gathered and used against Trump.
Added bonus: it keeps Trump's ultimate fate twisting in the wind, which is a good thing.

And this uncovered fuckery, discovered and reported tonight by the NY Times. And all of this happened three days before the January 6th certification, and coup of the Capitol.
Series of events:
- AG Barr leaves
- Replacement AG told by trump to open an investigation into “election fraud” in Georgia election
- Replacement AG says no
- Trump then makes a move to replace the AG who said “no”, with an AG WHO AGREED to open a fraud case against Georgia.
WTF! And once again, trump thought the DOJ were his personal lawyers.

Grassley

McConnell
Moran
Portman
Shelby
