The question I have is whether the House Sgt at Arms was the only person who could have requested the National Guard be on standby or not. Remember, the DoD actually APPROVED the DC mayor's request to deploy the National Guard a few days before the 6th -- I can't link to it but see the CNN article "Pentagon approves DC mayor's request to deploy National Guard" from 6 days ago.

Was this a trap, then? She was told she could deploy the Guard to give her a false sense of security, then denied, then the Capitol police were also denied the ability to deploy them?

These “suspicious” visits included at least one Special Forces veteran who met with Republican Reps. Ronny Jackson and August Pfluger of Texas and Reps. In two videos posted on social media, Special Forces veteran and former CIA contractor Casey Gray described his visit to the Capitol, and his interaction with congressional representatives the day prior to the insurrection. One of those videos has since been removed from his social media accounts.

A YouGov poll found that 45 percent of Republicans, after the fact, approved of the assault on the Capitol. [In fairness, a more robust ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted this past week found that only 20 percent of Republicans approved.] And now there is new information that extremists plan to encircle the Capitol to assassinate Democrats.

The severity of the threat means that we cannot afford an ineffective response. Considering your experience in government and your wider historical perspective, how do you suggest we react?

It is necessary to see the historical analogies that tell us what works and what doesn't work. The thing that pops into everyone's mind is the Civil War. People tend to get all misty-eyed about Lincoln's statement, "With malice toward none, and charity for all." That was his second inaugural address in March of 1865. What were the results? A couple of weeks later, what he got out of it was a bullet in the head. What Blacks got out of it was Jim Crow. What Confederates got was pardons, amnesties, dropped charges and the ability to rewrite history. The rest of us were saddled with them, and now we have a large portion of the country — a single region that is basically a Third World state.

A woman allegedly attempted to bluff her way past a Washington, DC security checkpoint by pretending to be a law enforcement officer — then fled the real cops before she was busted, according to authorities.

The suspect approached the checkpoint around 8:45 a.m. Saturday, said that she was in law enforcement, the US Capitol Police wrote in a statement.

As proof, the woman presented a challenge coin, a commemorative trinket commonly given in military or law-enforcement organizations to mark an achievement or special occasion, according to the USCP.

While officers continued to question the woman— who was not immediately identified by name — she sped off in a vehicle, the USCP said.

A California man who allegedly participated in the assault on the U.S. Capitol earlier this month and stole documents from the desk of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was arrested in his home state and charged this week by federal authorities.

According to a criminal complaint filed in D.C. federal court, authorities received a tip that Tommy Frederick Allan, of Rocklin, Calif., posted several self-incriminating videos to his social media accounts depicting him and others discussing a plan to storm the Capitol, breaking windows at the Capitol Building, and footage of him inside the building. The tipster also provided screenshots from Allan’s account showing multiple people in military-style tactical gear with “Three Percenter” patches whom he referred to as “patriots,” and another captioned: “You don’t want to hear the evidence. Fine! Here my Roar you fucking communist bastards. Give me freedom or give me death.”

Stepakoff, 55, leads Temple New Jerusalem, a messianic synagogue in Palm Harbor. He is also a lawyer, licensed by the Florida Bar. He is now one of at least 17 Floridians who have been accused of crimes related to the insurrection.

“He was there among peaceful protesters,” Terrana said. “There’s certainly nothing he’s done that’s wrong or criminal. There’s been no formal charges filed against him yet.”

The criminal complaint seeks charges of knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, knowingly engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, and violent entry or disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds.

Terrana described Stepakoff as a family man, a “strong Republican,” who is firm in his political convictions. He went to Washington, D.C., for a business trip related to his work as a spiritual leader and attended Trump’s speech, Terrana said.

“There certainly was no pre-planning or organization or conspiracy with him or any of these other people out there,” Terrana said. “He got caught up in the crowd. It’s yet to be seen what if anything he did wrong.”

In the weeks leading up to the Capitol violence, Stepakoff’s Twitter page featured a number of tweets and retweets relating to efforts to overturn Trump’s election loss. On Jan. 5, he retweeted a post from Trump’s now-suspended account.

“I am proud to be an American,” he wrote, “and I made the trip up from Florida to support the effort to save America. DC swarming with MAGA people. We’re not gonna take it! Thank you President Trump!”
