Those House members know the election won't be overturned. This is all playing to the base just before the EC vote on Monday. It's sickening how few morals and how little spine the Republicans have when it comes to Trump.

Thanks OP.

Reuters: “Trump and U.S. senators have refused to condemn these death threats. In fact, [Trump] continues to support those who are actively calling for elections officials to be shot,” Georgia’s deputy secretary of state, Jordan Fuchs.

The harassment campaign against U.S. election officials following President Donald Trump’s defeat took an ominous turn on Thursday after a website surfaced that accused them of “treason” and included photographs and home addresses, drawing the attention of U.S. intelligence agencies.

You can just leave off the last five words in that sentence.

by Anonymousreply 5December 10, 2020 9:55 PM

R1 What's boggling to me is why so many of them are still doing his bidding when they have to know he's LOST, LOST, and LOST AGAIN ... now more than 50 times.

One standard that has always seemed to be so American has been to accept defeat gracefully, i.e. not be a "sore loser", who, as the saying goes, "nobody likes."

Yet, they're all hitching their trailer to him and his pathetic losing cause.

This makes no sense to me.

by Anonymousreply 6December 10, 2020 10:21 PM

I suspect a fair number of them have also grifted and are looking for an out before it catches up with them as 45 transforms into an inmate number.

by Anonymousreply 7December 10, 2020 10:39 PM

They're also desperate not to alienate his base. That's all this is, theater for the dumbasses who send Trump money and harass election officials.

by Anonymousreply 8December 10, 2020 11:08 PM

They are DEPLORABLE.

by Anonymousreply 9December 10, 2020 11:45 PM

r6 You must have noticed that all of those old rules and manners have gradually eroded away. We no longer have any standards, morals, or sense of fair play and good sportsmanship. People see that bad behavior is no longer condemned--it's rewarded.

**Trump doomed Western Saharan refugees and broke with decades of US policy because he's mad his hoax tweets are getting disclaimers on them.**

A fallout between President Trump and Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, led to the breakthrough that resulted in the Morocco-Israel normalization deal, sources briefed on the matter told me.

Why it matters: Inhofe is Washington's most avid supporter of the Polisario Front — a Sahrawi rebel national liberation movement aiming to end Moroccan occupation of the Western Sahara. He has travelled many times to Algeria for meetings with Polisario leaders.

Inhofe is one of Trump's closest allies in the Senate and has asked the president over the last two years not to recognize Moroccan sovereignty in the Western Sahara.

Behind the scenes: Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner and special envoy Avi Berkowitz have been speaking with the Moroccan government for more than two years about the possibility of normalizing relations with Israel in exchange for recognition of the Western Sahara.

...

Relations between Trump and Inhofe soured about a week ago over the National Defense Authorization Act, a key military funding bill that Congress has passed every year since 1961, sources who were involved in the matter told me.

Trump wanted Inhofe to include provisions in the bill to repeal protections for social media companies and to kill a provision to rename military installations that carry names of Confederate leaders.

Inhofe rejected both demands and, as Axios' Alayna Treene reported, the two had a difficult phone call in which Inhofe leveled with Trump and said: "This is the only chance to get our bill passed."

An angry Trump went to his Twitter account to hit back at Inhofe, claiming his position would harm U.S. national security and election integrity and reiterating his threat to veto the bill.

Sources who were briefed on the matter told me Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, Kushner and Berkowitz saw this as an opening to get the Morocco deal done.

They care about consolidating power at any cost, and ensuring their own (brighter) political futures. For that, they need to keep their electorate, and their donors, fully locked and loaded. This means keeping their MAGA, Evangelical, and uneducated white voters angry and giving them the enemies they want. So there's no real downside to spouting outright lies and ludicrous claims. The more their electorate thinks 'libruls' stole the election, the more they will support the power grabs. They aren'

FWIW, over the years I have had conversations with dozens of members of the House of Representatives, Rs and Ds, as well as a few federal judges.

By and large, Congressmen and Congresswomen are not the sharpest tools in the shed. Most have easy going, engaging personalities (duh). (Katie Porter and a handful of thers aside) few are able to think their way through an even slightly complicated problem.

Offsite Link

R188 There's a paragraph in the article that says:

[quote] They serve at the pleasure of the administration, so President-elect Joe Biden could move to replace them quickly.

Although, it's not entirely clear (to this reader at least) exactly which positions the above statement is meant to apply to (i.e. all of the above, since it's near the end of the article and set apart in it's own paragraph?).

Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried. The article also says:

[quote] The positions that Trump has filled in recent weeks are generally on advisory boards in which members go without a salary, though they get reimbursed for travel expenses. The positions have what Light describes as “gorgeous resume value.”

So if they can't be replaced, then, until their appointment runs out, just don't give them anything to do, ignore their advice, and don't approve any travel expenses.

by Anonymousreply 189December 13, 2020 9:43 PM

That’s not really the point, R201. We all know Trump can’t flip enough votes.

The point is, if he gets a win, that encourages his moronic supporters to carry it even further and drag it out with more demonstrations and calls to overthrow the election. Anyone who’s sane already knows Biden won. We’re not talking about those people. We’re talking about complete nutters with no tether to reality who will now think Trump is about to pull it out. These people are like the Germans at the end of WWII who thought Hitler had a “secret weapon” and any minute he was going to pull it out and win the war. The main thing that stopped that was that he died. That’s when they finally got it.

by Anonymousreply 204December 14, 2020 2:21 AM

Any "Faithless Electors" today?

by Anonymousreply 219December 14, 2020 12:52 PM

The 16 electors who will cast their votes for Mr. Biden in Michigan are expected to have to traverse a gauntlet of protesters, some armed, from a group that believes the election was stolen from Mr. Trump.

In Wisconsin, electors were given new security protocols on Friday, complete with instructions to enter the Capitol grounds through an unmarked side door away from expected protesters.

In Arizona, state officials are holding the vote at an undisclosed location for safety reasons.

The nutcases will be out in full force today. That includes some of the electors:

“I don’t think we’re at a point where Joe Biden can legitimately be called president-elect,” said Ken Blackwell, a former Ohio secretary of state who will be casting an electoral vote for Mr. Trump in Columbus. “It’s almost laughable that anybody would think that President Trump should prematurely concede.”

by Anonymousreply 231December 14, 2020 3:58 PM

They can’t. If there’s two electors the senate and house vote. If they disagree it defaults to the electors certified by the governor and with the SOS seal on it. But they will not disagree. There are not the votes in the senate to accept fake electors.

WI Supreme Court has ruled against Trump

by Anonymousreply 233December 14, 2020 4:07 PM

Another 4-3 decision. Hard to imagine what this election would have been like if dems hadn’t had a blue wave in the Midwest in 2018 and if the liberal hadn’t won that Supreme Court seat in April.

by Anonymousreply 234December 14, 2020 4:10 PM

"The claims here are not of improper electoral activity. Rather, they are technical issues that arise in the administration of every election. In each category of ballots challenged, voters followed every procedure and policy communicated to them, and election officials in Dane and Milwaukee Counties followed the advice of WEC where given. Striking these votes now——after the election, and in only two of Wisconsin's 72 counties when the disputed practices were followed by hundreds of thousands of absentee voters statewide——would be an extraordinary step for this court to take.

We will not do so."

I just read on Reddit that the subreddit r/donaldtrump is or was showing a livestream of “alternate electors” voting for Trump and passing it off as the real swing state electors voting for Trump. The people on that subreddit think Trump is really winning. Those people are going to be convinced for the rest of their lives that Trump won the election and the votes everyone else in America is seeing are fake.

People were asking to have the livestream shut down. But at least for a while, they were letting it continue.

Can’t anyone in the Republican Party tell them it’s fake? What is wrong with these people? If they get away with that, Putin will pay Trump to roleplay President on a livestream for four years. They’ll put him on a fake Oval Office set, he’ll say he did everything they wanted, and they’ll vote for him for his “third term” in 2024.

I knew they'd move the goalposts again after the EC vote. Now the Trumptards say there is going to be a showdown on the floor of Congress on January 6. When that comes to nothing, as everything else has, the crazier ones will assume that Trump will invoke the insurrection act sometime between the 7th and the 19th. When THAT doesn't happen and Biden is duly inaugurated, they'll probably start talking about how the lawsuits (there will always be lawsuits) will see Biden and Harris impeached and a new election called.

The die-hard Trumpers will never stop, so best to ignore them at this point. I am really looking forward to being able to ignore Trump after January 20.

by Anonymousreply 332December 15, 2020 5:53 PM

R331, why? Because Putin has accepted Biden as President? Probably. They’re still taking orders from the Kremlin.

I’ve been wondering recently, what if Putin didn’t flip votes for Trump, but flipped votes for down ballot candidates, because Trump was too disruptive? Maybe he thought if the Republicans could keep the Senate, maybe gain the House, and block everything, that’s good enough. There are a lot of Republicans that are very sympathetic to Putin in Congress, and they did their jobs. Maybe he thought, reward the non-troublemakers and get rid of the one problem child.

by Anonymousreply 333December 15, 2020 6:00 PM

Maybe r333

If they were working together in 2016, then he might also be thinking that once trump got reelected Putin would no longer have that carrot to dangle and then Trump would become an unknown. An unknown that knows the score.

[quote]Cruz is an idiot if he bases his future political prospects on the infinitesimal possibility that the 2020 election results will be overturned.

by Anonymousreply 335December 15, 2020 6:30 PM

R334, following that chain of thought, Trump knows what Putin did to help him. Mitch doesn’t want any senators to challenge the results because it would be embarrassing for the senate. MSNBC just talked about this, seems it's been going on for months, while Dump was busy gathering Hunter Biden kompromat and raging against mask-wearing. Anything but doing his job.

From Bloomberg:

[quote]When FireEye Inc. discovered that it was hacked this month, the cybersecurity firm’s investigators immediately set about trying to figure out how attackers got past its defenses. It wasn’t just FireEye that got attacked, they quickly found out. Investigators discovered a vulnerability in a product made by one of its software providers, Texas-based SolarWinds Corp. Hackers, suspected to be part of an elite Russian group, took advantage of the vulnerability to implant malware, which then found its way into the systems of SolarWinds customers when they updated their software. So far, more than 25 entities have been victimized by the attack, according to people familiar with the investigations. But SolarWinds says as many as 18,000 entities may have downloaded the malicious Trojan. There were signs in Washington on Tuesday afternoon that additional bombshells about the hack may be forthcoming.

[quote]National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien cut short a trip to the Middle East and Europe to deal with the hack of U.S. government agencies. And Senator Richard Blumenthal, Democrat from Connecticut, said a classified briefing on “Russia’s cyber-attack left me deeply alarmed, in fact downright scared.” There will unfortunately be more victims that have to come forward in the coming weeks and months,” he said. While some have attributed the attack to a state-sponsored Russian group known as APT 29, or Cozy Bear, FireEye had not yet seen sufficient evidence to name the actor, he said. A Kremlin official denied that Russia had any involvement. FireEye’s investigation revealed that the hack on itself was part of a global campaign by a highly sophisticated attacker that also targeted “government, consulting, technology, telecom and extractive entities in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East,” the company said in a blog post Sunday night. “We anticipate there are additional victims in other countries and verticals.”

[quote]The Department of Commerce confirmed a breach in one of its bureaus, and Reuters reported that the Department of Homeland Security and the Treasury Department were also attacked as part of the suspected Russian hacking spree. The hackers were able to breach U.S. government entities by first attacking the SolarWinds IT provider. By compromising the software used by government entities and corporations to monitor their network, hackers were able to gain a foothold into their network and dig deeper all while appearing as legitimate traffic.

Jerry Falwell Jr., the disgraced former president of Liberty University, spent millions of the nonprofit religious school's funds to promote the Trump administration and the Republican Party, according to Politico.

Falwell, who was forced out in August amid a sex scandal and questions about his use of the university's funds, most notably launched a Liberty-funded "think tank" that reportedly paid for pro-Trump ads and hired members of President Donald Trump's circle. The think tank, the Falkirk Center, a play on the names of Falwell and fellow co-founder and pro-Trump activist Charlie Kirk, hired former adviser Sebastian Gorka and Trump legal adviser Jenna Ellis, who has most recently pushed the president's false fraud claims. The Falkirk Center also bought at least $50,000 in Facebook ads to promote Trump and other Republicans.

Trump megadonor and virulent anti-LGBTQ bigot Steve Hotze hired 20 investigators to find voter fraud in Harris County, Texas.

So far, there's been one arrest: An ex-cop Hotze hired ran a van off the road because he thought was filled with illegal ballots, and threatened the driver at gunpoint.

“There were no ballots in the truck,” according to a Harris County district attorney’s office press release. “It was filled with air conditioning parts and tools.”

Aguirre was arrested by Houston police Tuesday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

Value of Loeffler’s Mansion Dropped $6M Overnight—and Nobody Can Explain Why

The value of the estate, as appraised by Fulton County government officials for the purpose of calculating annual property tax dues, remained the same, $10.5 million, for the next seven years. Then, in 2016, the appraised value suddenly plunged to $4.15 million—a whopping 60 percent decline.

The result was a dramatic cut to the couple’s property tax bill.

Originally, they were paying $200,000 annually to the city and county governments. In 2016, after their home’s value dropped, they paid $90,000.

...

What was behind the precipitous decline is not apparent in city and county records reviewed by The Daily Beast. In a statement, a spokesperson for Fulton County was unable to offer an explanation, either.

“The employees responsible for these changes, including the appraiser, the Residential Property Manager, the Deputy Chief Appraiser and the Chief Appraiser, are no longer within Fulton County and there is no documentation suggesting the cause of these changes,” said the spokesperson.

There is no indication that Loeffler or her husband acted improperly, or worked to have the value of their estate, and thus their tax bill, lowered through non-public means. The Georgia senator’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

But the unusual circumstances around the drop in the property’s official worth, and the lack of an explanation for it from county authorities, raise questions about how the process of valuing one of Atlanta’s most expensive homes unfolded.

Trump will be like a pesky mosquito, buzzing around constantly throughout Biden's entire term. He is a sore loser, and will make sure EVERYONE knows how butthurt he is. He doesn't care that he is further driving a wedge through the country, it is just all about him, because his ego is too fragile to deal with losing the election - in a landslide, according to his 2016 declaration. Biden actually got two more electoral votes than Trump did (there were two faithless electors in 2016.)

Early voting in Georgia is higher than during the GE and it is hopefully a sign that people had enough of this election fraud drama and want Trump and these two dishonest Republican Senators gone. Pence may leave for overseas trip after certifying vote

...

Vice President Pence is reportedly planning to leave for a foreign trip after confirming President-elect Joe Biden’s win on Jan. 6.

Three U.S. officials told Politico that Pence is considering a weeklong overseas trip that would begin on Jan. 6, the day he is expected to confirm Biden’s win and his ticket’s loss in the presidential election.

The vote itself places Pence in an awkward spot given President Trump's refusal to concede the race. Pence's job is largely ceremonial, but his constitutional duty is to confirm the winner of the election.

ADVERTISEMENT He's far from the first vice president to be placed in the uncomfortable spot. Perhaps most notably, former Vice President Al Gore declared Republican George W. Bush as the president-elect in early 2001, after he lost the election to Bush while winning the popular vote. The Bush-Gore fight ended up being decided by the Supreme Court, which upheld the count for Bush in Florida.

Leaving the country could allow Pence to avoid the ire of Trump and his supporters.

Pence aides did not confirm the trip to Politico, but the news outlet obtained documents that showed Pence’s itinerary, with plans to stop in Bahrain, Israel and Poland. According to Politico, a pre-advance team has already left to visit the planned stops to prepare for his international tour.

The second is Miguel Cardona, who last year was named the top education official in Connecticut.

...

[quote] Fenwick has criticized education programs such as Teach For America — a nonprofit that for years recruited only new college graduates, gave them five weeks of summer training and placed them in high-need schools — and the move to inject competition and corporate-inspired management techniques into schools. She’s also spoken against for-profit charter schools and taxpayer-funded private school vouchers.

[quote] She does not just argue that these ideas are misguided but calls them “schemes” that drain money from public schools, driven by people looking to profit from public education. She also says advocacy for these policies is a form of resistance to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision.

If I was Pence, I’d resign at the end. Then I couldn’t pardon Trump and there wouldn’t be enough time to get another VP. And if there was a “fill in” VP for a few days, the next VP in line would be Nancy Pelosi.

National Republicans are desperate to avoid a floor fight in Congress over the certification of the Electoral College vote next month, believing it would be horrible politics to continue waging what most recognize to be a hopeless battle to overturn the outcome of the election.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has intervened, asking his members not to join Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) or any other House members looking to object to the results on Jan. 6, when Congress meets to certify the Electoral College count.

President Trump is waging a pressure campaign to get senators to revolt. Incoming Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), who will be sworn in Jan. 3, has said he’ll join the floor fight and Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has said he believes the election was “stolen” from Trump, is always a wild card.

Republicans desperate to avoid floor fight over Electoral College vote

Republican strategists are hoping McConnell can quash the insurgency, believing the debate over Trump’s refusal to accept the outcome of the 2020 election is tearing the party apart ahead of the Jan. 5 runoff elections in Georgia that will determine the balance of power in the Senate.

They say it’s bad for the GOP’s efforts to win back swing suburban voters if the party is associated with erratic flamethrowers, such as pro-Trump attorneys Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and Rudy Giuliani.

"I continued to believe that a critical mass of responsible attorneys staying in government might provide a last line of defense against the administration’s worst instincts.

I was wrong.

Watching the Trump campaign’s attacks on the election results, I now see what might have happened if, rather than nip and tuck the Trump agenda, responsible Justice Department attorneys had collectively — ethically, lawfully — refused to participate in President Trump’s systematic attacks on our democracy from the beginning. The attacks would have failed."

Trump's fictional charges of voter fraud are likely to lead to real real restrictions that will make voting harder in the future:

Pennsylvania Republicans are considering ending absentee voting rules they backed a year ago. Georgia’s Senate Republicans say they want to “fix” the state’s election system with new restrictions. Republicans in Wisconsin want to change early-voting procedures. And new rules have been floated in Texas.

Can the GOP Doofus Caucus Block Joe Biden on January 6?

[quote] If the likelihood of a plot succeeding correlates at all with the intelligence of the people behind it, then the far-right effort to block Joe Biden’s election in Congress on January 6 is doomed. It’s being run by the Congressional Doofus Caucus — Representatives Mo Brooks, Matt Gaetz, Jody Hice, Jim Jordan, Andy Biggs and Representative-elect Marjorie Taylor Greene of QAnon fame. According to Politico, they noshed on meatballs and pigs in blankets — brain food — on Monday while they plotted with Trump to deny Biden the Electoral College votes he won in key states, and hold onto the White House.

[quote] The crew says it plans to block electors from at least six Biden states. They’re currently debating how much evidence of “voter fraud” they need to present to Congress, which would be a tough job even if they were smarter, because even outgoing Attorney General Bill Barr says it was virtually non-existent. They’ll also need a senator to back them up and so far none has agreed, although Senator-elect Tommy Tuberville (who will immediately qualify for the Doofus Caucus as perhaps the dumbest sitting senator; sorry, Ron Johnson) says he’s interested.

[quote] The only thing that makes the gathering remotely interesting, except for its freak show value, is the participation of Vice President Mike Pence, whose job it is to preside over the congressional proceedings. He was there, Mo Brooks says, “trying to make sure that we understand what his view of the procedural requirements are, so we can comply with them.” This would seem a perversion of what should be, and always has been, a nonpartisan constitutional role — former Vice President Al Gore had to confirm his own defeat in 2000, even as Democratic House members tried to challenge Florida’s electors, and Biden certified Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton four years ago.

[quote] Pence has no business strategizing with the Doofus Caucus about their crackpot and certainly doomed effort to block Biden. He’s clearly continuing to try to stay in Trump’s good graces as well as court the GOP’s wingnut base in order to keep his political future alive.

[quote] Even so, Trump is reportedly angry at poor Mike — as he is with virtually everyone around him — for “not fighting hard enough for him,” Jonathan Swan of Axios reports, adding “Trump would view Pence performing his constitutional duty — and validating the election result — as the ultimate betrayal.” January 6 will ultimately be a meaningless date — Biden will be confirmed the president-elect — but it’s going to be a terrible day to be Mike Pence.

[quote] Elsewhere around the party, even former Trump stooges are discouraging the Doofus Caucus plan. South Dakota Sen. Sen. John Thune told reporters Monday that the House GOP’s effort is “going down like a shot dog.” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is discouraging it. Cowardly House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy, who has otherwise encouraged Trump’s delusions of a rigged election, has stayed mum on this particular crackpot plot.

The president has been rewarding his allies with such positions in recent weeks.

[quote] President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced plans to appoint another slate of top allies to various government boards, yet another sign that his time in office is winding to a close.

[quote] The president named Hope Hicks to be a member of the board overseeing the prestigious Fulbright scholarship. Hicks has long been one of Trump’s closest confidants outside of members of his own family and returned to the White House this year after leaving earlier in his presidency. Her Covid-19 diagnosis this fall touched off a deluge of positive tests throughout Trump’s orbit, including the president himself.

[quote] The president also nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to serve on the board of trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as White House staff secretary Derek Lyons, who notified Trump of his plans to leave the job earlier this month. Trump also tapped Ezra Cohen-Watnick, the acting undersecretary of Defense for intelligence and security, to chair the Public Interest Declassification Board.

[quote] Other administration hands include Russ Vought, Trump’s Office of Management and Budget director, who was nominated for a spot on the U.S. Naval Academy Board of Visitors; Stephanie Grisham, the former White House press secretary who never held a formal public media briefing during her tenure, to the National Board for Education Sciences; and Ric Grenell, Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence who later joined Trump’s reelection campaign, who was nominated to serve on the United States Holocaust Memorial Council.

[quote] Those individuals were among the more than 40 people named to various “key positions” on panels such as the Commission of Fine Arts, the National Museum and Library Services Board, and the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.

[quote] Trump has rolled out a handful of other appointment lists in recent weeks, awarding posts to people such as Kellyanne Conway, a 2016 campaign manager and former counselor to the president, and Brian Hook, the Trump administration's former U.S. special representative for Iran.

CNN: Trump announces wave of pardons, including Papadopoulos and former lawmakers Hunter and Collins

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a wave of lame duck pardons, including two for men who pleaded guilty in Robert Mueller's investigation, as well as ones for Republican allies who once served in Congress and military contractors involved in a deadly shooting of Iraqi civilians.

The pardons of former campaign aide George Papadopoulos, former US congressmen Duncan Hunter and Chris Collins, and the four Blackwater guards involved in the Iraq massacre kick off what is expected to be a flurry of pardons and commutations in the coming weeks as Trump concludes his term. Also included in the batch announced on Tuesday are Alex van der Zwaan, the Dutch lawyer who was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to lying to Mueller investigators; two Border Patrol agents convicted in 2006 of shooting and wounding an unarmed undocumented immigrant and then covering it up; and several people convicted of non-violent drug crimes serving lengthy sentences.

The pardons came at the recommendation of Trump allies in Congress and, in some cases, the conservative media. Many of the non-violent drug offenders were recommended for clemency by Alice Johnson, the former federal inmate whose sentence Trump commuted at the urging of Kim Kardashian West. Mueller investigation pardons

You know what just occurred to me in reading about all the Mueller investigation related pardons? Maybe there is a bright side to Mueller not having charged many people and not having charged even those who were charged with all the crimes they had actually committed. Trump can pardon them for certain crimes now but, once the full report, unredacted, and all the collected material is released to the new AG, there will be a whole slate of new crimes, some state-level, that can be charged. I don't believe a pardon that says "I pardon you of all crimes you might have ever committed" would stand up. Without the specific crimes laid out or charged, they won't be able to pardon them.

At least some of them won’t want to do that, because they’re lawyers and don’t want to be disbarred or whatever, but some of those people are unemployable anywhere else and maybe they’d like to be dragged out by the hair, thinking Deplorables will donate even more. This is all theater.

The US Supreme Court this week set a reply deadline for Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar and the other respondents named in the case of Jan. 22. The campaign had asked for the Supreme Court to order those on the other side of the litigation to respond by Wednesday and have reply briefs from the Trump campaign submitted by Thursday. It also asked the court to rule by Jan. 6. But the court did not oblige.

This means that by the time Boockvar and the others the Trump campaign is seeking to take to the Supreme Court even respond to the petition, President-elect Joe Biden will already be sworn in.

The Supreme Court justices set a deadline of Jan. 22 for Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar to respond to a petition from the Trump campaign. At that point, the court could simply decline to hear the case, saying it is moot or impossible for them to resolve at that point. Congress will have already counted electoral votes and certified the next president -- that meeting happens on Jan. 6. The Trump campaign, however, argued in its brief that even Inauguration Day would not make the court "moot" because such issues could happen in the future, and therefore the court should resolve them ahead of time.

Kinzinger is definitely trying to position himself as the "sane" Republican alternative to the whackos currently in control of his party. But I'm not sure there's any future for Republicans who don't toe the QAnon line, at least for the foreseeable future. I really wouldn't be surprised to see some short of schism.

Actor-producer Brian Unger: "I look no further than Hollywood. When you're no longer in the chair, and you don't have the big job, once you leave the building, nobody cares. Nobody gives a crap that you were there. Because your mind moves on to the next thing anyway. So his influence over the party is overstated, that's my opinion. And then secondly, there's always someone there to take your place, there's always someone who wanted the job and wants it so badly that they, essentially, kind of erase you from the popular lexicon. So I just wish that folks would understand that this whole "effect he will have on the Republican Party," you know, on America....No. You kind of slip away. You really do. Johnny Carson went and played tennis in Malibu. Seinfeld even became more of an emeritus comedian, and once he was off the show...it's not like they affect the everyday and drive the everyday pop culture, and I think politics is the same way. Once you're gone, you're gone."

by Anonymousreply 559December 27, 2020 6:42 PM

What was the fallout from Nixon, who undeniably was less "toxic" than 45? Ford pardoned him, but after Carter, we had 12 years under Repug administration. As Will Rogers said: “The short memories of the American voters is what keeps our politicians in office."

by Anonymousreply 560December 27, 2020 7:23 PM

R560 Speaking of Ford, look how different the 1976 Electoral Map looks compared to 2020. Back then, the South was Democratic (Carter), while the West Coast and Illinois was Republican (Ford). The Northeast was split. Native son, Ford, won Michigan. At 297 vs. 240, it was a closer race than Biden-Trump. That pink dot in Washington State was a Faithless Elector who voted for Reagan.

How things change.

[quote]Back then, the South was Democratic (Carter)

That was an aberration because of Carter. The South stopped being reliably democratic in 1964, thanks to LBJ's Civil Rights legislation. 1964, 1968, 1972, 1980 (except GA), and thereafter, except for Clinton picking up a few in 92/96--solidly Republican or George Wallace ('68).

Good morning.

Louie Gohmert, quite literally the dumbest man in Congress -- and by man, I mean a guy who resembles, both in appearance and intellect, a poorly drawn cartoon character -- is suing Vice President Mike Pence (literally Gohmert v. Pence) in a lawsuit which demands that the Court give Pence the "Exclusive Authority" to decide which Electoral College votes to count and which ones to ignore during the upcoming congressional session on January 6th when the House certifies the election. The lawsuit LITERALLY demands that Pence be given the exclusive authority to decide the election.

Yer Honer, we demand that the incumbent government be allowed to decide which votes matter and which ones don't in complete violation of the law, the Constitution, and the very spirit of our country, and then just appoint himself and his boss the winners. We call this democracy. The prosecution rests, Yer Holiness. Sieg Heil.

So, anyway, that's Monday.

Trump went golfing.

For the 5th straight day in a row.

It's hilarious to read how these right-wingers -- who are typically Constitutional literalists -- are trying to expand Pence's role as President of the Senate.

[quote] The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the certificates and the votes shall then be counted;

He gets to open and count the votes; that's it.

by Anonymousreply 581December 28, 2020 7:53 PM

I don't think he even does the counting, IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 582December 28, 2020 7:58 PM

Good think, since Mike can't count to 21 unless he's naked.

by Anonymousreply 583December 28, 2020 8:06 PM

Gohmert went to law school. He knows it doesn’t work this way. He’s just grandstanding.

by Anonymousreply 584December 28, 2020 8:40 PM

R582 You could be right! I now see how the sentence in the Constitution at R581 switches to the passive voice with "the votes shall then be counted" not really indicating by whom.

They should use the term white terrorist groups. There was a recent story about Ohio teenager who was plotting to blow up power stations in the southeast should Trump lose the election.
