I would like to see some deep dive analysis on what has turned Iowa and Ohio from blueish and purple states, respectively, to safely red states.

by Anonymousreply 2November 27, 2020 7:37 PM

LBJ wasn’t wrong. Dems did lose the South for a generation. It is coming back under Gen X and Millennials as they become the majority voters. Older Gen Xers (over 50) are more conservative than under 50. There is a good split within Gen X age wise about what side of the political fence they fall on. Those born in the 70s tend to favor Dems by a good amount.

DEMS shouldn’t be the ones wondering what went wrong. The MFing republicans just lost the popular vote AGAJN. The suburbs are trending away from them, as well. Dems need mainstream progressive policies to push them to a solid majority. Remember, people were freaked about FDR’s progressive policies until they saw they worked. If you look at what great, wonderful things Dem presidents have left us versus what republicans presidents have it is easy to see even the most moderate Dem is far, far superior to even a moderate republican.

true, but media is addicted to Democrats in Disarray r3. It's the only story they know how to write. Even as Republicans descend into a completely lunatic cult, Democrats and their inability to unite themselves and reach across the aisle remains the theme for media.

As a GenX born in the sixties, I would have to agree with r3. It seems like I am the only one with half a brain when I am around people my own age (53). I was a Warren supporter at first because her work with the CFPB benefitted me directly. It was something tangible to me.

Yes, all my old HS and many of my college friends (business majors of course) are fanatical trump supporters. It has cost me some friendships. But they don't see the change coming. As the boomers fade away, they will become the new "Get off my Lawn" generation. And that generation is sorely outnumbered. There are a lot of differences between the millenials and GenZ. But they share a common vision when it comes to many social issues. There just needs to be a little bit more of the boring activism that actually facilitates change like get out the vote efforts.

by Anonymousreply 8November 27, 2020 9:20 PM

R3, the Republicans [italic]should[/italic] be worried about losing the popular vote. They should have been worried about that for years now. Instead they've worried about how best to cheat, connive and swindle their way to victory. And I'm not getting the sense that they're learning from their mistakes. The few Republicans we see standing up for norms in political behavior are denounced as RINOs and fired. I'm curious what will happen to Raffensperger in the next election.

I'm gonna play contrarian here. If I were a republican (which I'm not), but why would I care about losing the popular vote when the electoral college continues to lean in my favor? Why would I care that my party represents way fewer Americans than the party in the minority, but yet we still control the Senate?

And the party that represents more land mass, didn't really lose all that much a few weeks ago. In fact, they got rid of the big orange albatross around their necks and they got a path back to retaking the House.

So yeah, it's amazing that Uncle Joe got millions and millions more votes (and I would argue a mandate) and we dodged a big fat bullet, but the popular vote is not getting us anywhere. We either need to start voting or we need to start moving our fat blue asses to some red states or we need to start acting like we want it.

Joe ran an amazing campaign and I'm a son of a bitch for complaining about it. But his decency and desire to model good behavior, hindered our GOTV efforts and it cost us a clear win in the Senate and probably cost us Florida. There should have been in person registration drives, door knocking, and in person rallies, pandemic or not. The other side didn't give a fuck about the pandemic and still got over 70 million votes and will likely keep the Senate. So what does that tell you.

PA lieutenant governor John Fetterman needs to get elected as governor or senator and then run for president. Seriously, he has this caveman alpha vibe and a hot young wife, basically he's exactly what we need to make Democrats cool again to straight white men.

by Anonymousreply 15November 28, 2020 12:16 AM

R14 is correct: The failure to go door to door registering new Voters and getting out the vote probably cost Democrats the Senate, state legislatures, House seats, and Florida and North Carolina. We need to realize that doing the right thing cost you The election

How Red State Democrats Lost the 2020 Senate Elections

By: Eric Cunningham

On: November 11, 2020

In: Articles

Tagged: 2020 Elections, Al Gross, Barbara Bollier, Jaime Harrison, Senate

One of the biggest stories surrounding the 2020 election was the massive surge in fundraising. ActBlue donations enabled long-shot red state Democrats like Jaime Harrison (~$109 million) and Amy McGrath (~$90 million) to create seemingly competitive contests. Despite favorable polling and Joe Biden’s victory, however, none of them came close to winning on Election Day.

Despite high hopes, Democrats flipped none of the “big three” red state races in Alaska, Kansas, and South Carolina. In fact, none of the three are even within 10%. Even Montana’s much-hyped Democrat Steve Bullock – the sitting Governor – is behind by that margin. How did strong fundraising numbers fail to make a dent in these competitive red state Senate races? There’s many reasons.

Ideology

On a purely ideological level, Alaska, Kansas, and South Carolina are reliably Republican states. Since 1974, Alaska has only elected one Democratic Senator; South Carolina hasn’t elected one since 1998, and Kansas hasn’t elected one since 1932. These states simply aren’t amenable to most national Democrats.

It takes a special type of Democrat to be competitive in these states. Simply put, none of the candidates running were that type of Democrat. In Alaska, Democratic-endorsed Independent Al Gross hoped to overcome party stigmatization by eschewing a label. However, his past advocacy for single-payer and public comments regarding his left-leaning values undermined his message. In Kansas, Bollier had been to the left of the average Kansas Democrat even when she was a Republican. And in South Carolina, a state where only 15% of voters identify as liberal, Harrison couldn’t name a single policy position he differed from the national party on.

These candidates proved to be excellent fundraisers, hauling in record quarter after record quarter. However, donors don’t decide elections – voters do. By focusing mostly on the desires of donors, these candidates set themselves up to fail. In contrast, New Mexico Republican Mark Ronchetti ran a lower-profile race focusing on local issues: energy, economic development, the military, and even healthcare. This helped Ronchetti outperform President Trump; while Trump lost the state by nearly 11 points, Ronchetti only lost by around six.

by Anonymousreply 17November 28, 2020 12:31 AM

Nationalization

In an article for The State, Maayan Schechter talked with Republicans and Democrats in South Carolina. Both agreed that Harrison’s money failed to build any infrastructure for state Democrats. Instead, it nationalized almost every race in the state. As a result, three out of every five Republicans voted straight-ticket. This proved disastrous for the numerous red-seat Democrats that still existed in South Carolina. Most shocking were the losses of Mandy Powers Norrell, the 2018 Lieutenant Governor nominee, and two-time gubernatorial nominee Vincent Sheehan. While both had long held office on virtue of their bipartisan records, a nationalized race was impossible to overcome.

Things hardly fared better for Gross and Bollier. Unlike successful strategic independent Angus King, Gross made no secret his plans to caucus with the Democrats. This unnecessarily nationalized the race; a vote for Al Gross became a vote for Chuck Schumer. And in Kansas, Bollier made a crucial blunder when she was caught on camera praising Australia’s gun control laws. This, combined with a weak debate performance in the closing weeks, severely hampered her ability to distance herself from the national party in any meaningful way. This is especially odd given she is a former Republican; it shouldn’t have been that hard to avoid nationalizing the race. The final factor to consider is polarization. In the 2016 elections, every state voted for the same party for President and Senate. In the 2020 elections, it appears only one state, Maine, split its ticket. While the Georgia runoffs might prove to be an exception, it remains clear that polarization is heavily affecting races.

In the past, it wouldn’t have been unusual for a state to vote for one party for president and another for Senate. This often resulted in unusual coalitions; it’s hard today to imagine a Gore/Santorum voter, for example. But that’s the exact sort of voter that existed in Pennsylvania in 2000. Today, it’s hard to picture a voter that splits their tickets period – especially one in red states. Even if Bollier, Gross, and Harrison had run perfect campaigns, it probably wouldn’t have been enough to overcome the partisan lean of their states.

The Harrison campaign seemed to recognize this and aggressively advertised on behalf of Constitution Party candidate Bill Bledsoe. The idea was that even if Harrison could only win 46-48% of votes, Bledsoe might peel off enough Republicans to allow a Harrison win. This also proved fruitless as Bledsoe received less than 1.5% of the vote. Even if they didn’t like Lindsey Graham, the vast majority of Republicans voted for him.

Polarization doesn’t mean it’s not worth trying to compete in unfavorable states. It also doesn’t mean elections are outright impossible to win. But it does provide a realistic perspective on how voters actually behave. To many voters, the prospect of a Biden presidency made voting for any Democrat impossible. Similarly, many Democrats felt the same about voting for any Republican. Conclusion

The Democratic failures in these red states provide a sobering outlook on their prospects. Despite massive financial advantages, strong national attention, and a fired-up based, none were able to come close to victory. But these races also provide teachable moments in how to handle campaigns in difficult states.

By avoiding nationalizing their races and prioritizing local issues, it may be possible to diverge from polarization somewhat. Mark Ronchetti’s campaign in New Mexico didn’t receive a tenth of the cash or attention that Bollier, Gross, or Harrison did, but it came far closer to winning. In the future, red state Democrats may be wise to look at his model rather than the one of Harrison.

by Anonymousreply 18November 28, 2020 12:33 AM

I don’t need a dissertation on why Dems underperformed. Dems won the WH big and GAINED in the Senate. The EC is also going to be harder for republicans to win. The number of states in play for Dems is expanding. TX is fully in play, and the gop will be forced to spend big to win it.

The Sen is more problematic but it won’t be for long because voters are slooooowly getting wise to how awful republicans policies actually are. The spin and propaganda about how much better republicans are for business and whatever is wearing off as we face mounting, multiple crises’s. I’ve never seen a party with such weak policies get credit for so much. They’ve had two failed policies over 40 years- tax cuts for the rich and deregulation.

Republicans just lie, lie, lie, cheat, spin and generally act without moral principles to win. Dems will NEVER do that. So now what? My only answer is use the truth to brutally, nonstop bash them.

South Carolina really shows the problem Senate Democrats ran into this year: in red states, very few people were willing to split their tickets. Out of roughly 2,260 precincts, only 46 in crossed over -- and 9 of those precincts were Biden/Graham, mostly in Charleston. #SCSen

Democrats and liberals make the fatal mistake of thinking that support for economic policies such as raising the minimum wage and expanding Medicaid will translate to more votes amongst white people and rural people. Democrats need to be at peace with this reality.

Sometime in the last week, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) produced a memo which reclassified **88%** of its workers as Schedule F.

Trump now believes he can fire nearly everyone at OMB at will. More agencies are likely to follow OMB in reclassifying portions of their workforces as Schedule F soon. Trump likely hopes to replace swathes of the career federal workforce with loyalists...

I think the Repugs have stolen the Senate. There is simply no non-cheating explanation for Graham's and McConnell's numbers. None. Collins is questionable, too. All the weird numbers will have come from in-person, same day voting because the machines were hacked. They did a bad job by skewing numbers too much because they had no way to know how high the mail-in numbers were going to end up being. We've now had multiple elections stolen since 2000 and the deciding number of Supreme Court seats, not to mention McConnell packing the courts across the land. All based on hacked votes. I really hope they are actually going to investigate the 2016 and 2020 results now and get concrete evidence that all but the worst deplorable can't deny. They should start with 2016 Florida, DeSantis and Scott, and then they can head on down to Miami Dade to find the actual results before mail-in ballots were thrown in the garbage.

It was so far off in so many ways. I don't buy it.

And, it's not at all as clear as you seem to think if you read the whole thing. What happens if Biden drops dead before the electoral college votes? Good luck interpreting that part clearly.
If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified.

Ew.

He is a fine Senator for WV. Putting him as the head of the party would guarantee a schism.

Tester, who I do like, has had leadership roles in the past, most notably as head of the Senate Campaign Committee in 2016. They only managed to pick up two seats, one (Tammy Duckworth) which was likely inevitable, and one (Maggie Hassan) which is at risk in 2022.

Even if Stacey Abrams can't deliver the special election, and ESPECIALLY if she can, there's about a 0% chance of anyone else taking over. Apart from her having a knack for it, she seems to be liked by all wings of the party, which may be an even more important factor.

Super PACs linked to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) are outspending Democratic groups in the Georgia Senate runoffs as Republicans attempt to hold the upper chamber.

The Senate Leadership Fund and American Crossroads, closely affiliated GOP super PACs run by former McConnell aides, have together spent $20.6 million on ads attacking Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. As of Monday, their combined spending accounted for 45 percent of all outside spending in the Georgia runoffs.

Those deep-pocketed super PACs have helped conservative groups outspend their liberal counterparts 2-to-1 thus far in the Georgia runoffs, which will decide control of the Senate when votes are tallied in early January.

[bold]Trump raises more than $150 million appealing to false election claims[/bold]

President Trump’s political operation has raised more than $150 million since Election Day, using a blizzard of misleading appeals about the election to shatter fundraising records set during the campaign, according to people with knowledge of the contributions.

The influx of political donations is one reason Trump and some allies are inclined to continue a legal onslaught and public affairs blitz focused on baseless claims of election fraud, even as their attempts have repeatedly failed in court and as key states continue to certify wins for President-elect Joe Biden.

Much of the money raised since the election is likely to go into an account for the president to use on political activities after he leaves office, while some of the contributions will go toward what’s left of the legal fight.

The people with knowledge of the fundraising amounts spoke on the condition of anonymity to disclose internal numbers. The Trump campaign declined to comment.

The surge of donations is largely from small-dollar donors, campaign officials say, tapping into the president’s base of loyal and fervent donors who tend to contribute the most when they feel the president is under siege or facing unfair political attacks. The campaign has sent about 500 post-election fundraising pitches to donors, often with hyperbolic language about voter fraud and the like.

“I need you now more than ever,” says one recent email that claims to be from the president. “The Recount Results were BOGUS,” another email subject line reads.

“Our democracy and freedom is at risk like never before, which is why I’m reaching out to you now with an URGENT request,” reads an email to donors from Vice President Pence. “President Trump and I need our STRONGEST supporters, like YOU, to join the Election Defense Task Force. This group will be responsible for DEFENDING the Election from voter fraud, and we really need you to step up to the front lines of this battle.”

The donations are purportedly being solicited for the Official Election Defense Fund, which is blazed in all red across the Trump campaign’s website, with an ominous picture of the president outside the White House.

There is no such account, however. The fundraising requests are being made by the Trump Make America Great Again Committee, a joint fundraising committee that raises money for the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee. As of Nov. 18, that committee also shares its funds with Save America, a new leadership PAC that Trump set up in early November and which he can use to fund his post-presidency activities.

The money raised since Nov. 3 is a massive haul for such a short period, especially after the election, when losing campaigns typically ramp down their fundraising operation. By comparison, the Trump Make America Great Again Committee raised $125 million in the second quarter of 2020, according to federal records. The campaign account’s best single month was September, when it raised $81 million, according to available data.

The contributions, from thousands of grass-roots donors across the country, are split into several accounts, including the leadership PAC that is loosely regulated and could be used to personally benefit the president after he leaves the White House.

According to the fine print in the latest fundraising appeals, 75 percent of each contribution to the joint fundraising committee would first go toward the Save America leadership PAC and the rest would be shared with the party committee, to help with the party’s operating expenses. This effectively means that the vast majority of low-dollar donations under the current agreement would go toward financing the president’s new leadership PAC, instead of efforts to support the party or to finance voting lawsuits...

Mr. Giuliani did not respond to a message seeking comment. Christianne Allen, his spokeswoman, said, “Mayor Giuliani cannot comment on any discussions that he has with his client.”

"William Barr says there is no evidence of widespread fraud in presidential election"

(CNN)The Justice Department hasn't found evidence to support allegations of widespread fraud that could have changed the result of last month's presidential election, Attorney General William Barr said in an interview with the Associated Press published Tuesday.

"To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election," Barr said. Barr, who prior to the election echoed President Donald Trump's claims that mail-in voting wasn't secure, said both the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security have looked into claims of fraud and come up empty. "There's been one assertion that would be systemic fraud and that would be the claim that machines were programmed essentially to skew the election results," Barr said. "And the DHS and DOJ have looked into that, and so far, we haven't seen anything to substantiate that."

CNN: Justice Department investigating potential presidential pardon bribery scheme, court records reveal

The Justice Department is investigating a potential crime related to funneling money to the White House or related political committee in exchange for a presidential pardon, according to court records unsealed Tuesday in federal court. The case is the latest legal twist in the waning days of President Donald Trump's administration after several of his top advisers have been convicted of federal criminal charges and as the possibility rises of Trump giving pardons to those who've been loyal to him.

The disclosure is in 20 pages of partially redacted documents made public by the DC District Court on Tuesday afternoon. The records show Chief Judge Beryl Howell's review in August of a request from prosecutors to access documents obtained in a search as part of a bribery-for-pardon investigation. The filings don't reveal a timeline of the alleged scheme, or any names of people potentially involved, except that communications between people including at least one lawyer were seized from an office that was raided sometime before the end of this summer. No one appears to have been publicly charged with a related crime to date.

At the end of this summer, a filter team, used to make sure prosecutors don't receive tainted evidence that should have been kept from them because it was privileged, had more than 50 digital devices including iPhones, iPads, laptops, thumb drives and computer drives after investigators raided the unidentified offices. Prosecutors told the court they wanted permission to the filter team's holdings. The prosecutors believed the devices revealed emails that showed allegedly criminal activity, including a "secret lobbying scheme" and a bribery conspiracy that offered "a substantial political contribution in exchange for a presidential pardon or reprieve of sentence" for a convicted defendant whose name is redacted, according to the redacted documents.

Communications between attorneys and clients are typically privileged and kept from prosecutors as they build their cases, but in this situation, Howell allowed the prosecutors access. Attorney-client communications are not protected as privileged under the law when there is discussion of a crime, among other exceptions. "The political strategy to obtain a presidential pardon was 'parallel' to and distinct from [redacted]'s role as an attorney-advocate for [redacted name]," Howell wrote in her court order. The grand jury investigation also appears to relate to unnamed people acting as unregistered "lobbyists to senior White House officials" as they sought to secure a pardon and use an intermediary to send a bribe, the unsealed court records say. Prosecutors hadn't provided evidence to the judge, however, of any direct payment, and instead showed evidence that a person was seeking clemency because of past and future political contributions. The investigators indicated in court that they intended to "confront" three people with the communications and complete their investigation.

Over the last week, the Justice Department told Howell it wanted to keep filings related to the matter confidential in court, because "individuals and conduct" hadn't yet been charged.

Lou Dobbs is for once right, but not in the way he thinks.
Fox Business Network host and top Trump sycophant Lou Dobbs was absolutely beside himself on Tuesday over the news that Attorney General William Barr said there was no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the election results. Dobbs even accused Trump’s loyal A.G. of being part of the “deep state” and “perhaps compromised.”

Of course Barr is part of the deep state - the one Dump installed and corruptly used. And of course Barr is compromised for doing Dump's bidding.

Does a pardon have to name a specific crime, even if it isn't charged? I mean, the pardon can't just say "I hereby pardon Don Jr. for all the crimes he's committed before today.", right? So, wouldn't a pardon have to list the possible crimes being pardoned?

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-Ala.) has been telling colleagues and allies that he plans to challenge the Electoral College votes when Congress officially certifies Joe Biden’s victory on Jan. 6, as long as a Senate Republican joins him in the long-shot effort.

Brooks confirmed his plans in a phone interview, adding that he is still considering objecting to the vote-counting process even if no one joins him — though he acknowledged that would be more of a symbolic protest.

“In my judgment, if only lawful votes by eligible American citizens were cast, Donald Trump won the Electoral College by a significant margin, and Congress’s certification should reflect that,” Brooks said.

“In my judgment, if only lawful votes by eligible white American citizens were cast, Donald Trump won the Electoral College by a significant margin, and Congress’s certification should reflect that,” Brooks said. “This election was stolen by the negro socialists engaging in extraordinary voter fraud and election theft measures.”

by Anonymousreply 233December 2, 2020 7:09 PM

I don’t see a Senator going along with some of the crazier GOP house members. Maybe someone like Ron Johnson but I don’t think Mitch would allow it. You can object without officially objecting. An official objection has to be in writing, but you can verbally object as an act of theater. I expect we’ll see a lot of that. It happened in 2016. A lot of dems “objected” Trump and Biden eventually had to tell them all to sit down and shut up. His exact words were “it’s over”.

by Anonymousreply 234December 2, 2020 7:17 PM

Pelosi should just refuse to seat any republican until after the certification. Only certify democrats. That would nip that in the bud. If Mo Brooks isn’t careful he may be waiting in the wings and not seated until the 7th.

Pompeo invites hundreds to indoor holiday parties after subordinates are warned against hosting ‘non-mission critical events’
A copy of one invitation, obtained by The Washington Post, welcomes guests to a Dec. 15 event titled “Diplomacy at Home for the Holidays” in the Benjamin Franklin Room, the department’s flagship reception space, which features cut-glass chandeliers and towering Corinthian columns. Invitations have already gone out to 900 people, said two U.S. officials familiar with the planning, raising concerns about a potential superspreader event.
Two other holiday parties in the coming days have also raised safety concerns at the department given their size. On Dec. 16, Pompeo will host a reception for the Washington diplomatic corps at the State Department. Invites have gone out to about 180 foreign ambassadors, who are allowed to bring spouses, officials said.
Another holiday party, hosted by the department’s chief of protocol Cam Henderson, involves a tour of the White House followed by a tour of Blair House, the president’s guesthouse, which is managed by the State Department. President Trump is also hosting holiday parties at the White House that defy his own health experts’ public guidance. Some of those events appear to be smaller, such as a Dec. 10 congressional ball, which will include more than 50 guests.

by Anonymousreply 289December 3, 2020 10:53 AM

R289, because they fucking cheated. They didn't cheat enough in the presidential and went overboard down ticket because they didn't realize so many would split their tickets against Trump. Graham and McConnell's numbers are insanely unrealistic. I honestly think that one of the reasons the Repugs are going along with the Trump shitshow right now is that it is cover against anyone looking too closely at the cheating the Repugs actually did.

That all changes on January 20th. The new Attorney General better do his or her fucking job and Biden better not kumbaya this shit onto some moral high ground, we go high back burner!

by Anonymousreply 290December 3, 2020 11:09 AM

R290 It is beyond a shadow of a doubt republicans cheated. Their numbers made no sense given every election from 2017 on where they were seeing 20-30 point swings towards Dems in every election. This election was for redrawing congressional districts so they cheated.

by Anonymousreply 291December 3, 2020 11:36 AM

Yeah, if the Repugs had lost the state houses (as expected), they would never win the majority in the House ever again. Unless we work to prove it over the next two years, the only hope we have of actual representation instead of a gerrymandered mess will be the courts. There's a reason McConnell is, to this very day, still getting judges through while thousands of Americans die and the Covid relief package lays on his bathroom floor with shit stains on it.

by Anonymousreply 292December 3, 2020 11:52 AM

Let's drop in on yesterday's Michigan legislature hearing featuring Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, shall we? Highlights include:

• One of Guiliani's witnesses, a Republican poll watcher at the TCF Center in Detroit on Election Day, opined that people should not be allowed to vote without a photo ID because "all Chinese look alike."

• Another witness, Melissa Carone, who claims she worked as a contractor for Dominion Voting Systems but was unable to coherently describe her job duties, insisted that she witnessed blatant and massive fraud when ballots were being counted – including instances of poll workers running the same ballots through voting machines "thousands of times."

None of the witnesses, including Giuliani, were sworn in, so there is no penalty if they're found to be lying.

On the strength of witnesses like these, Giuliani asked Michigan legislators to "take back your power" and disregard certified election results showing Joe Biden won the state's popular vote.

R290 SC and KY were indeed insanely off. So was NC with Tillis. Maine, Iowa, and Montana numbers looked skewed in Senate races. Mississippi polling had the Senate race much closer than the result.

Graham shooting up 11 points from polling to votes was extreme. SC has a very controlled Republican elections apparatus. This gave Graham confidence to try to meddle in neighboring Georgia's election counting.

Races in certain states did look like there was hanky-panky happening. All of it by Republican operatives.
“If the United States were a regular country, Joe Biden would be getting massive pressure right now from major powers to update and upgrade the antiquated American electoral system,” Dov H. Levin, assistant professor of international relations at the University of Hong Kong, told me. “There would be hundreds of electoral experts descending to tell the U.S. how to do this. They could require, for example, that the U.S. set up an independent election committee to be in charge of determining who won instead of Fox News and CNN.”
We are not a regular country. We are an exceptional one, so much so that we participate regularly in everybody else’s elections. One out of every 11 elections around the world between 1946 and 2000 featured some sort of U.S. intervention, according to Dr. Levin’s new book, “Meddling in the Ballot Box.” That made me feel all the more neglected. We invaded Iraq to free them from a despot. We helped redesign Kenya’s entire electoral system after its disputed election. Isn’t it time they returned the favor? After all we have done for democracy everywhere, how could the world abandon us now?

it is not incidental that Democrats are seeing attrition among people of faith at the same time that Republicans are gaining among people of color. African Americans and Hispanics, for instance, tend to be more religious and socially conservative than whites on average. People lose sight of this because many minority populations have decisively skewed towards Democrats. However, this does not mean they are overall liberal. In fact, African Americans and Hispanics are among the least "culturally left" constituents within the Democratic coalition. [bold]Biden-voting counties equal 70% of America’s economy. What does this mean for the nation’s political-economic divide?[/bold]

ven with a new president and political party soon in charge of the White House, the nation’s economic standoff continues. Notwithstanding President-elect Joe Biden’s solid popular vote victory, last week’s election failed to deliver the kind of transformative reorientation of the nation’s political-economic map that Democrats (and some Republicans) had hoped for. The data confirms that the election sharpened the striking geographic divide between red and blue America, instead of dispelling it.

Most notably, the stark economic rift that Brookings Metro documented after Donald Trump’s shocking 2016 victory has grown even wider. In 2016, we wrote that the 2,584 counties that Trump won generated just 36% of the country’s economic output, whereas the 472 counties Hillary Clinton carried equated to almost two-thirds of the nation’s aggregate economy.

A similar analysis for last week’s election shows these trends continuing, albeit with a different political outcome. This time, Biden’s winning base in 477 counties encompasses fully 70% of America’s economic activity, while Trump’s losing base of 2,497 counties represents just 29% of the economy. (Votes are still outstanding in 110 mostly low-output counties, and this piece will be updated as new data is reported.)
I still can’t believe Susan Collins ended up winning by 9 points. Sara Gideon should be ashamed of herself. She raised $80 million

She didn't. They cheated. Graham, McConnell, Tillis, and Collins. Their numbers are ridiculous and unbelievable. Half the reason the Repugs are letting Trump continue with the lawsuits is to cover the Repug cheating that actually happened. Can you imagine any Democrats bringing fraud lawsuits right now? Nope. Our only hope is that will happen after January with real lawyers and real proof. Having the AG, FBI, CIA, and the rest of the intelligence community working for the Biden administration is going to make a huge difference in actually looking into the fraud that occured this year and in 2016.

What you just said R391 (the Repugs cheated!) without any proof or evidence is basically the same thing Trump and his ilk have been saying about Democrats. It sounds totally hypocritical. All these bogus accusations of cheating by both sides without evidence needs to stop. We had an election. Votes were counted. The people who got elected or re-elected did so because people voted for them.

R394, did you not pay attention to the evidence of votes flipping in 2016? The fact that the Russians infiltrated voter rolls in all 50 states ahead of 2016? None of it was investigated because the Repugs were in charge. That's not lack of evidence. That's corruption. And, of course, they are still doing it. Why would they stop? On the other side, the Repugs have just make up stuff and, even after having spent years trying to prove it, have found nothing. You'll have an argument two years from now if there are actual investigations that show no cheating by the Repugs. As of right now, the Repugs have dug under every rock for the last four years and have found nothing. With almost no investigation at the national level due to Repugs being in charge of the national mechanisms of investigation, we already know that Russians (who backed Trump) hacked all 50 states and that voting machines were hackable to switch votes. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 433December 7, 2020 8:26 PM

If votes are certified and electors appointed by the safe harbor date, Congress has to honor those results.

More than 270 electors have already been appointed for Biden.

by Anonymousreply 434December 7, 2020 8:30 PM

He’s focused on PA MI, and GA because either one of those latter two, combined with PA, are the only two state options for whittling Biden’s count down to a tied 270 electoral votes.

Without PA he’d need to flip THREE states, not two, to change the results.

by Anonymousreply 435December 7, 2020 8:33 PM

R433 I’ve read two articles saying two different things. One says that if it’s certified by the safe harbor date then it means that the state has met the deadline. But another article says that all challenges in court must be resolved by then which means the states trump has active cases in will not be considered to have met the deadline.

It’s confusing.
re the only two state options for whittling Biden’s count down to a tied 270 electoral votes.

Trump plots mass pardons, even to people not asking

Jonathan Swan

President Trump isn't just accepting pardon requests but blindly discussing them "like Christmas gifts" to people who haven't even asked, sources with direct knowledge of the conversations told Axios.

Behind the scenes: Trump recently told one adviser he was going to pardon "every person who ever talked to me," suggesting an even larger pardon blitz to come. As with most Trump conversations, the adviser wasn't sure how seriously to take the president — although Trump gave no indication he was joking.

The big picture: The president relishes his unilateral authority to issue get-out-of-jail-free cards. Lately, though, he's been soliciting recipients, asking friends and advisers who they think he should pardon.

Trump has also interrupted conversations to spontaneously suggest that he add the person he's speaking with to his pardon list, these sources said.

R499, the whole point of Trump appointing Amy Covid Barrett was so she would rule in his favor in the inevitable (to him) case that was supposed to overrule the election. He has been planning this for months. Mitch McConnell was trying to ram her through to fix the election. She was supposed to be a Trump lackey, bought off by handing her the seat.

I get the impression that from her point of view, her whole purpose there is to get rid of abortion, she would do or say anything to Trump to get on the Supreme Court so she could get rid of abortion. She doesn’t give a shit about Trump or anything he wants, she just wants to ban abortion and nothing else. She’s religious and an extreme conservative, but it’s not guaranteed she’s going to go right down the Trump cult’s laundry list, it’s religion uber alles with her.

They left the courtroom and insisted they won, even though they lost. They've been doing it ever since.

An early version of the phrase Whom the gods would destroy... appears in verses 620–623 of Sophocles’ play Antigone: "τὸ κακὸν δοκεῖν ποτ᾽ ἐσθλὸν τῷδ᾽ ἔμμεν' ὅτῳ φρένας θεὸς ἄγει πρὸς ἄταν" to mean that "evil appears as good in the minds of those whom god leads to destruction"

I’m worried about the Texas case. Tons of states are joining onto it and scotus may feel compelled to listen to them even though Texas has no standing to tell other states how to run their elections. This may be the case that overturns the election

by Anonymousreply 538December 9, 2020 2:16 PM

The Texas legal challenge seeks to invalidate the 62 Electoral College votes from four OTHER battleground states and award Trump a second term, alleging unconstitutional changes to election rules before the vote.

"Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a justification, government officials in the defendant states of Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (collectively, 'Defendant State'), usurped their legislatures’ authority and unconstitutionally revised their state’s election statutes," Paxton's complaint says. "They accomplished these statutory revisions through executive fiat or friendly lawsuits, thereby weakening ballot integrity."

And of course voters in those states rejected Trump.

The one thing this is showing is just how stupid the Electoral College is when there's only two main political parties that can win a general, national election. .. Something like the EC may have to exist, say, if we had three or four strong political parties, where no one candidate received more than 50% of the vote, but beyond that, it's entirely stupid, and actually undemocratic (e,g. since a vote in a state like Wyoming is worth almost 3X that of a vote in California). But I don't see the two-party system going away in my lifetime.

If we went with popular vote, there would be no battleground states. Every vote in every state would matter. There would never have been a President Dump to begin with, and none of this assault on democracy would be happening.

In order for Texas to take their case directly to the SCOTUS, they have to request "leave to file" an original bill of complaint. The Court doesn't like to do such cases, and when they do, it's a slooooooooow process to even grant that permission. Case in point, Texas filed such a request against California back in February, and it still hasn't been decided.

The Biden administration would do well to reach out to centrist Republicans and try to build a coalition to move this country out of this dreadful situation we're in. On my continuing quest to understand how Mitch McConnell, who had an approval rating of 18%, managed to win reelection by 57%, I dug even deeper🤔

The deeper I dig, the more I find the numbers out of Kentucky hard to swallow🙄

Here's a follow up on Kentucky's election results👇

My previous thread noted how many Kentucky Dems voted Republican. Folks said "This is just Kentucky voters"

But if Kentucky voters typically cross party lines it also provides cover to easily hide vote flipping. And HUGE numbers of Dems voted Republican.

Take Breathitt County👇

In Breathitt Mitch got 234% more votes than they had registered Republicans

Amys votes only represent 17% of registered Dems

They'll still say "Its just Kentucky. Look at voting history"

Well, HISTORY shows 2 counties who NEVER before voted for Mitch gave him BIG wins in 2020👇

Mitch NEVER won in Elliott or Wolfe Kentucky.

But in 2020 he won these counties with mind boggling results🧐

...

THEORY: When a Kentucky Dem voted for Amy they also voted for Biden

But thats NOT quite what the data shows👇

Out of 120 counties in Kentucky, Amy McGrath got MORE votes than Joe Biden in 119 counties.

In 99% of the counties it appears voters went into the voting booth and voted for Amy McGrath AND Trump?

Really? A Trump voter who then votes for the Democratic woman candidate?

Huh🤔 Did Amy get more votes than Biden cause more folks voted in the Senate race? Nope

550 more people voted in the Presidential race.

Senatorial Votes: 2,134,446

Presidential Votes: 2,134,996

I only had one explanation...the whole country watched the #MoscowMitch race but noone expected Biden to beat Trump in KY

So IF they manipulated votes did they siphon off slightly MORE votes from Biden to Trump?

Ironically Trump mistakenly claimed sorta the same thing in Georgia The amazing @marceelias highlighted an interesting section from one of Trumps cases👇

TRUMP alleged that Dominion machines in Georgia had a machine-controlled algorithm that flipped 2.5% of the votes FROM Biden TO Trump😳

WTF😳 Did Trump accidentally confess to vote flipping?

...

Even though Trumps vote flipping scheme is one way, it's not the only way to help a candidate in an election. What if you also wanted to add voters to the voting rolls? All those added votes would inflate the totals for the candidates you're helping.

But how do you detect that? I decided to look again at Breathitt Kentucky.

👉Breathitt used ES&S machines

👉& it's where Mitch had the biggest number of votes compared to registered Republicans

So I looked at the population of Breathitt and compared it to the registered voters and it sure does look odd👇

👉Breathitts population is 13,116

👉Approximately 23% of the population is 19 & under. So let's estimate 20% as under 18

👉That gives us approximately 10,500 old enough to vote

Yet KY Board of Electors says Breathitt has 11,497 registered voters?

But how would they add voters to voting rolls? You'd need an opportunity.

...

In 2016, Hillary won 65M in the popular vote.

Trump may have expected to win with 70M votes if it wasn't for the overwhelming turn out for Joe👏🌊

And Trump may have lost but Senators still won...

👉Mitch in KY 👉Lindsey in SC 👉Cornyn in TX 👉Ernst in IA 👉Collins in ME

I really want more info on R573

by Anonymousreply 575December 10, 2020 3:24 AM

All that at R573 is why both this election and the 2016 election need to be looked into once we take over the Justice Department again. If they don't do that, it will be the end of our country because Repugs have been revving up their cheating since Reagan. It's become so obvious and blatant that it's undeniable at this point. They overstepped in 2016 but we weren't in a position to officially investigate. They fucked up in a major way this time, as pointed out by R573. They overcompensated with the hacked machines because they couldn't predict the mail-in vote totals.

by Anonymousreply 576December 10, 2020 3:52 AM

There’s a couple things I want to know from R573:

Do you think Trump flipped millions of votes with the understanding that “I got 74 million votes,” as he keeps saying, was enough compensation to flip the election, only it wasn’t? In which case, how many votes did he really get, and how many did Biden get?

Why cheat in Kentucky, a red state? Did they only flip McConnell votes? Did they try to flip Biden votes too, or did they figure he would lose no matter what and not bother? If they cheated in Kentucky, it implies that not only did McConnell lose, but Biden did much better than expected. Could he have won there? We’ll never know. It also implies they thought Trump and McConnell would really lose there, otherwise, why bother? Why these desperate attempts to hold states they always hold? What did they know?
