Kathie Lee tweeted this early this morning

by Anonymousreply 12July 25, 2020 7:23 PM

I never understood his appeal. His show took off and it was like we were supposed to know who he was. I had never seen him before his daytime show with Kathy Lee.

It was previously a NYC only show for a few years before it went national, but everyone acts like he was some big star for decades before that.

I will always hold a grudge against him because of it.

by Anonymousreply 13July 25, 2020 7:25 PM

I don't know who that is

by Anonymousreply 14July 25, 2020 7:25 PM

Kelly Ripa barely tweets. I wonder if she'll acknowledge this.

by Anonymousreply 24July 25, 2020 7:45 PM

I guess that was his final answer.

by Anonymousreply 25July 25, 2020 7:46 PM

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Kelly Ripa is a fucking bitch.

by Anonymousreply 26July 25, 2020 7:47 PM

R22 she’ll have to capture her tears on camera I guarantee. After she swooped in and stole that job from Regis and pushed out any challengers. Once a Frau takes over an industry they don’t give it back a smidge.

by Anonymousreply 27July 25, 2020 7:49 PM

[quote] I never understood his appeal. His show took off and it was like we were supposed to know who he was. I had never seen him before his daytime show with Kathy Lee.

The show was owned by Disney and because it was an ABC NY show - many ABC affiliates picked up the show and aired after "Good Morning America" - to have a lead-in like that was really beneficial for the show taking off

In 1990 GMA finally regained the number 1 spot in the morning wars, so to have that lead in just increased Regis & Kathie Lee popularity

by Anonymousreply 28July 25, 2020 7:49 PM

R26 she also has a trashy foot tat, ruddy skinny and looks like death in person.

by Anonymousreply 30July 25, 2020 7:51 PM

[quote]I never understood his appeal.

His appeal was he was a throwback and really New York. People loved that 20 minutes at the start of the show when he and Kathie Lee would talk about Broadway shows and all that New York stuff they would do.

by Anonymousreply 31July 25, 2020 7:52 PM

Exactly one month away from his 89th birthday.

by Anonymousreply 32July 25, 2020 7:53 PM

R9, the real question is has Susan Dey?

by Anonymousreply 33July 25, 2020 7:54 PM

Next week, the release of Amy Philbin's book, "Regis Dearest" will be the talk of the world.

by Anonymousreply 34July 25, 2020 7:54 PM

I can’t wait to watch Kelly give an Emmy-worthy performance on her show.

by Anonymousreply 35July 25, 2020 7:56 PM

I used to find him secretly quite sexy, even though he was old. This was 35 years ago. Now I guess I’m older than he was then.

by Anonymousreply 36July 25, 2020 7:56 PM

I knew Regis Philbin from seeing him as a host of this incredible, yet short-lived summer game show called "Almost Anything Goes" in 1975.

Basically the contestants were citizens of small towns (fewer than 5000 residents) who competed in huge teams in physical stunts against each other on a football field. They did a handful of episodes, but as a kid I thought it was so incredible, surely it would run forever! Lol, nope.

Datalounge is obsessed with Cunty Ripa. We had 5 threads when she was filming in the Caribbean “secretly”.

by Anonymousreply 40July 25, 2020 7:59 PM

In addition to this comment, this is the reason why Good Morning America can't expand to 3 hours in the AM - the affiliates DO NOT want the third hour of GMA, preferring to keep "Live with Kelly & Ryan" They have told ABC if they expand GMA to a third hour, they WON'T carry the show

So ABC is stuck having the third hour of GMA at 1 PM, All My Children's former time-period.

by Anonymousreply 41July 25, 2020 7:59 PM

He was Joey Bishop's sidekick on his late-night talk show in the 60s. Regis made national headlines when he walked off the show one night after he was blamed for the show's poor ratings.

by Anonymousreply 47July 25, 2020 8:06 PM

R42 - so we're supposed to remember him from a 2 season show with poor ratings 20 years prior to Live with Regis and Kathy Lee as some sort of star?

Still looking for evidence of him being a 'star' and well-known before this TV show.

He was rotten to his disabled son from his first marriage, who died in 2015.

"Regis Philbin‘s son, who overcame a severe disability to become a successful public affairs worker for the Pentagon, has died at the age of 49, The National ENQUIRER reported.

Danny Philbin, who was born with a spinal cord defect that led to the amputation of both his legs, had a strained relationship with his famous talk show host father until they reconciled six years ago — after The ENQUIRER published an appeal by the son’s then-wife to the TV star for financial help.

Before that, the U.S. Department of Defense honored Danny in 2002 for remaining on the job despite the flames burning near his office after a terrorist-flown airliner crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. “This bravery and dedication were not without cost, as he was hospitalized later for several days,” the citation read."

by Anonymousreply 54July 25, 2020 8:17 PM

^^ Obviously, with no legs, he couldn't run away like everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 55July 25, 2020 8:21 PM

R54 - do we think that maybe because he had no legs and a disability that it was difficult to get out of his office in the disaster?

And that's pretty shitty of Regis to leave his old family behind when he got with Joyce.

by Anonymousreply 56July 25, 2020 8:24 PM

[quote] Still looking for evidence of him being a 'star' and well-known before this TV show.

Again it is because the show followed "Good Morning America" in most major markets, that is why the show became a hit.

Uh oh. We have angered the Again/Do You Have A Source For That Troll.

by Anonymousreply 59July 25, 2020 8:32 PM

I loved Regis and Kathie Lee together. They were funny. I didn't like Kathie when she got all religious and born again, but she was very funny when she was being mischievous and a little off-color. She was a very good as a morning chat show host.

by Anonymousreply 60July 25, 2020 8:36 PM

R57 - I agree that the show became a hit for whatever reason. I just still have a chip on my shoulder when they used to talk about what a star he was before the show.

Whatever. He seemed like a short egomaniac to me.

by Anonymousreply 61July 25, 2020 8:36 PM

I liked him. He told a good story. And he was a Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 62July 25, 2020 8:42 PM

At least the bastard was nice to his guests.

by Anonymousreply 63July 25, 2020 8:43 PM

Although he worked on TV for decades, he didn't become nationally successful until he was paired with Kathie Lee on Live.

Before Live, he was popular in Los Angeles and San Diego hosting local talk shows, but he also was the butt of jokes about D-list celebrities.

by Anonymousreply 64July 25, 2020 8:46 PM

He was a strange man--so high strung, and so incredibly self-centered. He would begin every show by telling you at some length as to what the weather was like that day in New York City; but of course if you didn't live in NYC (which was most of the audience), you wouldn't give a shit (the show was always only indoors).

He also didn't have a lot of self-awareness. He said he was really shocked when he would see Dana Carvery imitate him on SNL--he said he had no idea he came across as so obnoxious and loud and shouty. How could you not know that about yourself well into late middle-age?

I did kind of like him all the same. He had a real rapport with Kathie Lee she never had with anyone else--she always seemed so phony with Hoda Kotb (who always seemed to deserve better).

by Anonymousreply 65July 25, 2020 8:49 PM

I thin k the point was that when he started doing "Live!" Regis was well known in NY (to the comedy crowd from the 60s) and in LA and San Diego (because he did local shows there for so long). He was not known to the rest of the country very well at all, but the people in the NY/LA entertainment circuit didn't care because THEY knew him.

His wife Joy got him to relax more when she would sub for Kathie Lee. I always thought it would have been better had they fired Kathie Lee and let her co-host the show--she wasn't funny or quirky, the way Kathie Lee was, but she was a much more relaxed presence.

by Anonymousreply 66July 25, 2020 8:52 PM

"We are beyond saddened to learn about the loss of Regis Philbin. He was the ultimate class act, bringing his laughter and joy into our homes everyday on Live for more than 23 years. We were beyond lucky to have him as a mentor in our careers and aspire everyday to fill his shoes on the show. We send our deepest love and condolences to his family and hope they can find some comfort in knowing he left the world a better place," Ripa, 49, shared on Instagram.

Elder gays will remember when Regis was Joey Bishop's announcer/sidekick on his ABC late night talk show in the 1960s.

Regis famously walked off the show one evening, because he claimed he wasn't being respected.

I went to see him and Kathie Lee in the 90s. A close friend got 4 tickets. Her parents loved them. God it was early in the morning. I seem to remember there was a bit of friction between them at the time. Not sure. Some historic baseball player was a guest on the show. Yogi something.

After the show Kathie disappeared immediately. Regis hung around surrounded by a large bunch of old ladies adoring him. He seemed to be pleasant to them. I thought he earned his paycheck.

Ripa signing Secreast's name is classless and gross. Ryan Seacrest has nothing to do with Regis Philbin.

Regis made Ripa and gave her the opportunity of a lifetime for her and her family. She ought to be ashamed of herself. If she were going to mention "We" and sign it with another person, then it should have been Ripa and her husband, Mark, to show their gratitude.

If Seacrest wanted to send his own condolences, then that's what he should have done. In this instance, the message should have been from Ripa alone or Ripa and her husband--not Seacrest.

by Anonymousreply 106July 25, 2020 10:02 PM

She may not have cared for Philbin.

by Anonymousreply 107July 25, 2020 10:03 PM

Who could forget when he had Jon Hamm over to his apartment to surprise Joy. He was more excited than Joy was.

Ripa's probably still pissed because Regis said to the press that she basically forgot him after the show ended. Like with Rosie, she apparently never forgets a slight.

Kathie Lee Gifford on IG:

There are no words to fully express the love I have for my precious friend, Regis. I simply adored him and every day with him was a gift. We spent 15 years together bantering and bickering and laughing ourselves silly—a tradition and a friendship we shared up to this very day. I smile knowing somewhere in Heaven, at this very moment, he’s making someone laugh. It brings me great comfort knowing that he had a personal relationship with his Lord that brought him great peace. I send all the love in my heart to Joy, to his children, to the rest of his family and to the innumerable people he touched over his legendary life. There has never been anyone like him. by Anonymousreply 124July 25, 2020 10:25 PM

r13

Same with Bonnie Raitt. She was on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1975??? I was like who is this bitch. Despite her albums being panned by the critics and no sales, she managed to hold a record contract for 15 years, until she had a hit with "Nick Of Time."

Regis missed out in Chicago, the third largest TV market because Oprah's show aired on ABC7 at 9am. Chicago stations didn't air it for years and later when they started it was put on overnights.

by Anonymousreply 125July 25, 2020 10:27 PM

From Gelman:

Devastated by Regis’ passing. He was a broadcasting legend as well as my friend, colleague and mentor for over thirty years. My heart goes out to Joy and his family.

by Anonymousreply 126July 25, 2020 10:28 PM

Was he on anyone's death list?

by Anonymousreply 127July 25, 2020 10:28 PM

The View's statement is very nicely done. Proper.

R13... His appeal, I think (and not to me, I always found him too shouty) but it was sort of a Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin thing... bland really, friendly in his averageness, he was more regular person than elbow rubbing celebrity, even though he was an elbow rubbing celebrity. He wasn't self conscious at all (like Ripa) and he wasn't actually trying that hard... he had this quality of I'm gonna do this whether you like it nor not, without being a jerk about it (like Ellen.) Rosie had the same kind of quality until it all went wrong. If she'd kept it together, I'd bet her show would still be on the air.

by Anonymousreply 128July 25, 2020 10:32 PM

Great. Now DL has a new reason to dislike Ripa.

by Anonymousreply 129July 25, 2020 10:37 PM

Susan Lucci:

Oh, Regis—I am so shocked and so incredibly sad to learn of your passing. Your warmth and charm and devilish sense of humor made the world fall in love with you—and all of us who had the privilege and joy to work with you adored you!

Those five years we traveled the country appearing together on stage are full of some of my favorite memories.

Helmut and I send our love and heartfelt sympathy to beautiful Joy and your entire family.

You were one of a kind, Rege—🎼There Will Never Ever Be Another You🎼

RIP, Regis—and thank you💙

I absolutely LOVED Regis Philbin. I knew him to always be interested in everything, current, happy, funny, generous and sweet. As wonderful a man as he was talented. And, as this photos proves, he was up for anything! I will never forget him and miss him very much. RIP Regis

- Pee Wee Herman

Legendary entertainer and television host Regis Philbin brought laughter and joy to households across our country. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this time.

- Kamala Harris

New York lost a TV legend today. Bronx born and raised, Regis Philbin greeted us for years with our morning coffee and at night after dinner. His humor and enthusiasm touched millions of Americans. My heart goes out to Joy and his loved ones.

- Andrew Cuomo

Damn. Awful news. Regis Philbin was a friend and a mentor to me. I will never forget his kindness and support. He truly was a mensch.

- Craig Ferguson

I truly believed that #RegisPhilbin would be a presence with us forever. He was a fun, funny, charming man. On the occasions I got to be with him, he was always a bright light, endlessly interesting and interested in everyone. Sympathy to his loved ones. #ripregisphilbin

Kelly Ripa has made her statement. But this is not over for her, yet. She is putting together her narcissistic meltdown soon to debut on one of Andy Cohen’s many, many shows.

It’s all about Kelly you know.

The one tweet that might make Ripa's look good.

Kathie Lee's statement was a class act. Ripa's was a piece of shit especially signing it with Seacrest who had nothing to do with Regis. Ripa...sign the goddamn statement alone or with your husband. you classless, ungrateful bitch.--to the man who made you a household name giving you millions in your paycheck.

by Anonymousreply 140July 25, 2020 10:55 PM

Andrew Cuomo released the best statement, acknowledging Regis was a NATIVE NYer, the REAL DEAL.

by Anonymousreply 146July 25, 2020 10:58 PM

I wonder if David Letterman will say anything. Regis was as close to having a friend as Letterman got. But Letterman really stuck up for him with the when they pushed Regis out.

by Anonymousreply 153July 25, 2020 11:05 PM

I hope Kelly Rips meets her end like the ending of Drag Me to Hell. A zombie demon Regis will pop up out of a sewer grate to drag her down to hell. Sorry, she seems like someone who would make Ellen look warm and cuddly.

by Anonymousreply 154July 25, 2020 11:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 157July 25, 2020 11:10 PM

It took a while for Regis to hit his stride as a big, successful national name after not really connecting in the 1960s. But when the timing was right for him, he rose to the top. He did, he was the heart and soul of LIVE. So chatty, funny, dishy, abrupt, silly and kind. He always knew just how to hit the right tone. It was a treat to watch him each morning. I remember him with Sarah Purcell on the West Coast too. They were fun together.

I loved him with Kathie Lee. Regis and Kelly were okay; he was fine; she was replaceable.

I loved his wife, Joy, too. Witty, charming, lovely woman and an appealing TV presence in her own right.

We need more people like Regis on TV. Not people like Ripa and Seacrest. More people like Regis, Merv Griffin, etc. TV chat is the perfect for for them .

by Anonymousreply 161July 25, 2020 11:17 PM

RIPA

Is this what finally brings her down?

Kathie Lee is looking for all-black stillettoes, mini skirt and lace push-up bra

by Anonymousreply 163July 25, 2020 11:21 PM

Joey Bishop was a dick. He had a tv show & his second banana, Guy Marks, was getting all the laughs. Bishop wanted him canned, so he was replaced by Corbett Monica. It pretty much ruined Guy Marks’ career, though Bishop later made him come on his talk show a few times to make it look like nothing was wrong.

by Anonymousreply 164July 25, 2020 11:27 PM

Why did it ruin Marks' career?

Howard Stern Stirs up 'Live With Kelly and Ryan' Drama With Hot Take on Regis Philbin's Ousting

"Kelly I don’t think likes Regis. That’s the thing. They have a war."

“I think it is true, and I think she would say that it’s true,” Stern responded after Kimmel countered saying he doesn't believe there is a feud. “They don’t talk or anything as far as I know. I thought it was an issue where Kelly felt that she should’ve been told by Regis that he was leaving the show.”

All three on the show mentioned how Philbin "didn't leave on his own accord."

“I think he would’ve liked to at least be associated in some way with the show and remind people that he’s the guy who started that whole thing," Stern said

that's so sad about his son; you never really know. I maintain that anyone who wants to be in the public eye, to be a star, to have the adoration of millions...that person should NEVER become a parent, never be in a committed relationship, and never be counted on as a friend.

by Anonymousreply 209July 26, 2020 2:17 AM

Ripa's statement did seem a little...'corporate'

we'll see what she says on Monday.

But I can see WHY Live forced him out. If they didn't effect a change, then one would have been forced on them.

Imagine if he'd stayed and on Monday, what were they going to do? Sure, they can get through a few weeks, but what about finding a long term replacement?

Sadly, it's a business and the show wanted to control the transition.

I don't think Pippa got him off the show; it was more of a corporate/producer decision.

I didn’t know Regis’ first wife was Frank Faylen’s daughter (Ernie the cab driver in Its a Wonderful Life & Dobie Gillis’ father). So Regis’ kids from his first marriage are the grandchildren of Mr Herbert T Gillis.

Good GOD Seacrest looks like shit in that Regis tribute! I don't believe for one minute he is quarantining so much he can't go get his hair done or anything like that.

Kelly was just as fake as I figured she would be with her faux emotion. You could tell at the beginning she was straining to make a tear appear.

by Anonymousreply 288July 27, 2020 6:23 PM

Kathie Lee was interviewed on the Today Show this morning. It would have been nice and appropriate if Kathie Lee were invited on LIVE with Kelly. I wonder if Kelly or German extended an invitation? After all, Kelly said it herself on this morning’s show that the “core four” women surrounding Regis were his wife, Joy, their two daughters and Kathi Lee. It would have been a fitting tribute.

by Anonymousreply 289July 27, 2020 6:39 PM

by Anonymousreply 293July 27, 2020 7:34 PM

If Kelly weren’t such a trashy skank, she would have called Regis every so often or taken him to lunch from time to time, much as we do with parents and grandparents. Who cares if they are annoying? You can get through a lunch a couple of times a year.

by Anonymousreply 294July 27, 2020 7:44 PM

You don't work opposite your parents or grandparents.

by Anonymousreply 295July 27, 2020 7:47 PM

And they no longer worked together after Regis retired, either. It would have been the decent thing to stay in touch.

It’s possible Kelly tried to stay in touch and was rebuffed by Regis, I suppose. But he seemed awfully hurt over the years when discussing Kelly’s behavior after he retired.

Kelly &Ryan had a nice tribute show this morning. It all seemed genuine to me,and all the right things were said and touched on.

This board — or at least a few people who post about Ripa endlessly — are so hard on her it’s unreal, and I’ll never get it. If she says nothing, she’s a cold bitch. If she looks emotional, she’s a lying botoxed whore.

There is no evidence that Regis was pushed out by LIVE, and in fact, Philbin said many times that Kelly was upset she wasn’t aware of him leaving. I think they probably asked him to take a pay cut and Regis played hardball — and lost. I think he gave them an ultimatum and decided to leave.

Were Regis and Kelly as close as he and Kathie Lee? Of course not, and Ripa said often that Regis didn’t talk to her before the show. At all. I think Regis was a great tv personality, but I don’t think he was a saint, either.

However thanks to this thread I'm looking up videos and pics of Kelly and found some of her from a show called Dance Party and OMG. If I knew how to link a pic I would show it because it's shocking how much heavier she was when she was young. Borderline fat almost and man did she love the camera. Totally vain and narcissistic woman.

by Anonymousreply 328July 30, 2020 12:36 AM

Good special on Regis, and Kelly came out looking really good.

Honestly, I think Regis had a lot more sour relationships in his life than Ripa had, and I’ve never heard of Kelly having family problems, either.

On the special, the clips shown of Jimmy Kimmel’s final interview with Regis last year showed a Regis who was only half there. He never said Jimmy’s name, and his responses were vague and generic — not typical Regis at all.

by Anonymousreply 329July 30, 2020 6:23 AM

R329 it does seem like any time a former partner of his went on with her life he held a grudge. Mary Hart said something to that effect when she went on to ET. Like what was she supposed to do sit around and wait for him? I still love him as a TV personality though.

Kelly’s reaction could well be totally fake but I don’t think it “looks fake” — I think she’s coming across quite well (aside from the initial IG post). She’s neither over nor under doing it.

The special was good. He’ll certainly be missed.

by Anonymousreply 330July 30, 2020 7:40 AM

By spinning a fake story that Kelly was hurt and devastated by Regis' departure from the show - she seeks to disguise the fact that she was the driving force behind getting rid of him. She'd rather be seen as the victim instead of the persecutor. Her entire life must be a complete web of bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 331July 31, 2020 2:46 PM

But didn't he need to go? Whoever was behind it spared him great embarrassment.

by Anonymousreply 332July 31, 2020 2:51 PM

Wow. Big tits aside, the daughter is Kelly's double.

by Anonymousreply 336July 31, 2020 3:02 PM

I loved Regis but I think he could be kind of mean on air to Kelly and Gelman at times. No doubt Kelly's initial sunny persona with him changed and she occasionally appeared snippy and defensive on the air.

This isn't meant to be a diss to her but when you starve yourself day after day it does affect your mood. As she got slimmer and slimmer that friendly demeanor started to morph into something else. She bristled at things that she earlier would have laughed off. She hardened. Their dynamic shifted. She was no longer his sweet, happy to be there sidekick. She came into her own and perhaps he resented it and her.

When Clay Aiken abused her verbally on air and grabbed her face while conducting an interview and she recounted the story to Regis a few days later it seemed like he was more on Clay's side than hers. "He's a nice boy!"

Too bad they couldn't have worked out their differences but that's life. Sometimes you just can't get along with people no matter how hard you try. Or think you are trying.

by Anonymousreply 337July 31, 2020 3:24 PM

Still!

by Anonymousreply 338July 31, 2020 3:27 PM
