If another one of The Beatles dies, part of my world will die with them. Long live George, Paul & John. RIP Ringo.
When Joan Jett died I was quite sad. My older sister loved her a lot when we were younger. Joan was a junkie for a long time. She survived longer than most. My sister had her struggles with that too. So I guess it just made me sad. I don't like her music that much, but I remember it booming up from the basement.
I remember when we lost Donna Murphy. I cried. She was a great Broadway star who deserved much greater recognition. That kind of cancer is so insidious. RIP Donna.
Liza Mary Presley found Elvis with a needle still in his arm - down in the jungle room. When she killed herself, it wasn't such a surprise. Sad though.

She died almost a year to the day of my mom. Took me a while to realize it was really about mourning my mom. She was a lot like Joan—fancy, smart, funny, fashion-focused, highly critical. No plastic surgery, though.
Since realizing that, when I miss my mom I often tune into a Joan Rivers interview on YouTube. Makes me feel better.

by Anonymous | reply 157 | July 23, 2020 1:49 PM |
R155 It’s because of what their deaths represent. For me, I wasn’t alive during “Beatlemania” but I am a huge fan of the Beatles and their solo work. When Paul McCartney dies, it will mark the end of a certain period of time. For those who lived through the entire career of the Beatles, it would likely be even more poignant. And of course it’s a reminder of our own imminent demise.
Practically speaking, it also means the end of the creative output of that person. John Lennon was killed at age 40. Anyone living back then who was a fan of his music had to come to terms with the fact that there would be no new Lennon music.

R153, he needed special care and I assume the estate was set up so he and/or his trustee could access funds quickly. In a normal situation I'd agree with you, but I suspect Barbara had been planning for the inevitable for a long time and they didn't need to wait to put the place on the market.

Stephen Colbert
If I can include people in politics & news commentary: Rachel Maddow
and of course Obama

I was sad when Barbara died, but more for her legacy than her humorless and self aggrandizing personality. They didn't even do more than a 15 minute segment on The View. ABC is planning a special retrospective to air in September. Barbara did get a great fantastic send off when she retired. It's not sad that she died during the pandemic. Her daughter and Walters were estranged and few would attend a grand service. Barbara Walters was toilet trained socially - but not many really liked her. Judgy Judy and Cindy Adams. Even Joan Rivers only tolerated her, though she attended her dinner parties.
My mom always calls Barbara Walters a spider woman. She was kind of creepy. An accomplished life she had, but it wasn't a big deal when she died. Everyone remembers she sided with Trump in his feud with Rosie. And Roy Cohn. Good Riddance Barbara.

I said I was sad because of the great enjoyment I got out of Heath's performances plus the fact that he was so young and had such a great future ahead of him. As gay as it sounds, I will be terribly and deeply sad when Barbra Streisand passes. That voice had given me so much joy. I'll also miss Liza very much. I watched these two on TV starting back in the early 60s and I feel like I've grown up with them. My respect and love of their performances know no bounds. When people say that others are stupid for mourning the loss of a famous person, they really are sort of clueless as to the reasons behind it.

Who is going to break this news to my mother? Dino Martin didn't die in 1997, he was friendly and alive just a few years ago at Da Vinci's in BH. He looked like an old basset hound but was charming to my mom and me. We talked for a good ten minutes. All very surface comments on both sides, he didn't look well. He ate dinner there often. He was alone that night in 2016, but we saw him again a few years later with Elke Somers. They laughed it up. My mom was kind of sad I think. When did he die? It would have been recently - he must have been close to 90. She'll be sad. Mom is 71 now herself. Dean Martin gave her a lot of pleasure.

R268 why does she continue to fill stadiums like a rock star. Trust me peoples reality would be shaken if Oprah died her contribution to the culture through her show and new age garbage has been huge.
There are people who seem like they’ll always be there and like the space that they occupy cannot be filled by another human being..they’re irreplaceable. Oprah never had children because in some way, the people that tuned into her everyday were her children.
She represents success at such a high level just the fact that she supposedly did that show every damn day for 25 years without a sick day is remarkable. She really does represent making it from nothing and excellence. She’s from that generation where if you were a woman and black, and you made it, you held onto that success and guarded it like forever!
Now if she falls from public grace in a major way, like Whitney style or Britney style, and public perception changes, then people will care less.

I am old but I just don't get the angst when anyone old dies, star or not, that is what is suppose to happen. When someone young dies that is sad because there could have been so much more. Your body deteriorates as you get older, death is a release from the pain and suffering. Like the person who makes a complete fool of themselves at a funeral with their over displays of grief some of you are over doing it.

R321 and R322, did you rejoice at the death of Osama bin Laden or just shrug your shoulders? There hasn't been any actor, musician or other celebrity whose death has affected you, eg. Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger, Princess Di?
by Anonymous | reply 323 | July 28, 2020 9:10 PM |
I'm still sad when I think of Prince and Robin Williams. Especially Robin because of the emotional turmoil he must have felt.
I was heartbroken after Farrah. Her special on cancer had just aired, and while I knew it was coming my heart broke for her. I wish she lived long enough to castrate Ryan.
Dolly and Willie, I just dread it.
Kate Jackson, especially if she doesn't get herself together first. I'll probably have to start talking about her all weekend rather than just Fridays.
by Anonymous | reply 324 | July 28, 2020 9:59 PM |
hey. I was delighted when Obama took Osama bin Laden out. I cheered and screamed along with everyone else. I was crushed when Heath died. Felt really bad. Felt the shock and the sadness of Princess Diana, too. Didn't know much about Cobain. But WTF is your point. I think this thread is about future deaths not past ones.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | July 28, 2020 9:59 PM |
I will only celebrate Donald Trump's demise if he is sufficiently humiliated first. I don't want him to go quickly and without suffering. He needs to pay for what he's done.
Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be shattering, especially because the deplorables will be doing their best to tarnish their legacies.
I want Obama to live a very very long time.

I'll feel weird when Queen Elizabeth dies. She's been this presence my whole life, even though I'm American. I can't think of a movie star or music star I really feel so connected to that I'll be truly sad when they die. It might be weird to live in a world without Bruce Springsteen, maybe just because Born to Run was the first record I bought, but I don't think it's anything like the fact that Queen Elizabeth has been a world figure my entire life.

R265 - Poster upthread is right: Oprah will come nowhere near the gran scena that characterised the death, national mourning, and funeral of Diana. No one thought the monarchy would survive.
The only thing that would match Diana's passing is another assassination or the death of her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, By the Grace of God Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and her Territories Beyond the Seas. And even that won't quite match up because HM will be either 100+ or close to it.
Diana's death was a stratospheric occurrence that those of us who witnessed it know won't be easily matched.
My sister called me at 7AM to tell me Diana had died hours earlier.
"YOU FUCKING CALLED ME HOURS LATER INSTEAD OF RIGHT AWAY TO TELL ME SHE DIED?! I yelled?
"I didn't want to wake you up," she said contritely.
Now she calls me if her granddaughter wakes up teething.

They're all in their 80s and 90s. Their deaths will not be devastating...just natural.
The deaths of Heath Ledger and Chadwick Boseman were devastating, because they died young and at the height of their careers. Or the death of B actors Paul Walker or Andy Whitfield because they were tragic deaths too.
