I will be in mourning for months when Betty White and Carol Burnett go

by Anonymousreply 3July 23, 2020 1:34 AM

Sidney Poitier.

I've only seen a couple of his movies, but he's such an elegant man and even though he's really old, it will still be a tragedy.

I can't imagine that the death of anyone who I've never met and whose life is so far removed from my own would ever "shatter" me.

I can imagine wailing and carrying on about someone who didn't even know my name.

Okay Mr. Takes Everything Literally R20, how about someone who you’ll just be sad to see go? Is your heart so cold that you were never sad when someone famous whose work you enjoyed died? Maybe John Candy? Whitney Houston? Bea Arthur? Aretha Franklin? You’re only moved by people’s deaths when you knew them personally?

by Anonymousreply 58July 23, 2020 2:38 AM

If another one of The Beatles dies, part of my world will die with them. Long live George, Paul & John. RIP Ringo.

When Joan Jett died I was quite sad. My older sister loved her a lot when we were younger. Joan was a junkie for a long time. She survived longer than most. My sister had her struggles with that too. So I guess it just made me sad. I don't like her music that much, but I remember it booming up from the basement.

I remember when we lost Donna Murphy. I cried. She was a great Broadway star who deserved much greater recognition. That kind of cancer is so insidious. RIP Donna.

Liza Mary Presley found Elvis with a needle still in his arm - down in the jungle room. When she killed herself, it wasn't such a surprise. Sad though.

by Anonymousreply 59July 23, 2020 2:41 AM

Joan Jett isn't dead.

by Anonymousreply 120July 23, 2020 8:59 AM

^^Well, I suppose the Capitol would be more appropriate than if Streisand were to lie in state in what remains of a hollowed out former Baskin & Robbins storefront in her mall.

I was bereft when Joan Rivers died. The emotion took me by complete surprise. I always loved her but I wasn’t a fanatic. Just thought she was very funny and clever.

She died almost a year to the day of my mom. Took me a while to realize it was really about mourning my mom. She was a lot like Joan—fancy, smart, funny, fashion-focused, highly critical. No plastic surgery, though.

Since realizing that, when I miss my mom I often tune into a Joan Rivers interview on YouTube. Makes me feel better.

Stephen Sondheim and John Kander. It'll really be the end of an era.

by Anonymousreply 157July 23, 2020 1:49 PM

R155 It’s because of what their deaths represent. For me, I wasn’t alive during “Beatlemania” but I am a huge fan of the Beatles and their solo work. When Paul McCartney dies, it will mark the end of a certain period of time. For those who lived through the entire career of the Beatles, it would likely be even more poignant. And of course it’s a reminder of our own imminent demise.

Practically speaking, it also means the end of the creative output of that person. John Lennon was killed at age 40. Anyone living back then who was a fan of his music had to come to terms with the fact that there would be no new Lennon music.

by Anonymousreply 158July 23, 2020 1:57 PM

R153, he needed special care and I assume the estate was set up so he and/or his trustee could access funds quickly. In a normal situation I'd agree with you, but I suspect Barbara had been planning for the inevitable for a long time and they didn't need to wait to put the place on the market.

That's okay, R166. I cried through the television coverage of Jacqueline Onassis's funeral, too. She was the last connection this country had to civility and to graciousness and to a way of life that is not mired in the fucking gutter of capitalism and fame.

We lost an enormous amount when we lost Cook and Jackie O.

She’s got those solid brass lungs that’ll serve as ventilators. And I hear she’s trying out something called “Beat the Tide!” in New Haven right now. (It’s about a woman who inherits a swim team, or a rowing team, or something.)

RuPaul Andre Charles

I know I will be fucked up when he goes (assuming I survive him).

He's only a month older than me and we were actually hanging out in the same places in New York around the same time but I never noticed him. There were a lot of drugs happening in my life at that time. I wouldn't have noticed a pink elephant on the dance floor or dancing on the bar.

Cher and Meryl Streep for sure. But when Madonna dies I really will lose it. Yeah, she's batshit crazy these days but her music and larger than life personality have always been there for me, telling me that I was okay as a little gay boy in high school, hiding my orientation behind football pads, girls and beer.

by Anonymousreply 181July 23, 2020 7:07 PM

R181 “Football Pads, Girls and Beer” should be the title of your coming out memoir, I’d definitely read it.

by Anonymousreply 199July 23, 2020 7:54 PM

You mean BaBa don't you?

by Anonymousreply 200July 23, 2020 8:01 PM

I was sad when Barbara died, but more for her legacy than her humorless and self aggrandizing personality. They didn't even do more than a 15 minute segment on The View. ABC is planning a special retrospective to air in September. Barbara did get a great fantastic send off when she retired. It's not sad that she died during the pandemic. Her daughter and Walters were estranged and few would attend a grand service. Barbara Walters was toilet trained socially - but not many really liked her. Judgy Judy and Cindy Adams. Even Joan Rivers only tolerated her, though she attended her dinner parties.

My mom always calls Barbara Walters a spider woman. She was kind of creepy. An accomplished life she had, but it wasn't a big deal when she died. Everyone remembers she sided with Trump in his feud with Rosie. And Roy Cohn. Good Riddance Barbara.

by Anonymousreply 233July 24, 2020 2:18 AM

When Heath Ledger died, I was terribly upset and sad. A friend said he just didn't understand that since I personally didn't know Heath. I said I was sad because of the great enjoyment I got out of Heath's performances plus the fact that he was so young and had such a great future ahead of him. As gay as it sounds, I will be terribly and deeply sad when Barbra Streisand passes. That voice had given me so much joy. I'll also miss Liza very much. I watched these two on TV starting back in the early 60s and I feel like I've grown up with them. My respect and love of their performances know no bounds. When people say that others are stupid for mourning the loss of a famous person, they really are sort of clueless as to the reasons behind it.

by Anonymousreply 238July 24, 2020 3:44 AM

R238 Well it has been quite awhile since he’s been seen at dinner then.

by Anonymousreply 239July 24, 2020 3:55 AM

Who is going to break this news to my mother? Dino Martin didn't die in 1997, he was friendly and alive just a few years ago at Da Vinci's in BH. He looked like an old basset hound but was charming to my mom and me. We talked for a good ten minutes. All very surface comments on both sides, he didn't look well. He ate dinner there often. He was alone that night in 2016, but we saw him again a few years later with Elke Somers. They laughed it up. My mom was kind of sad I think. When did he die? It would have been recently - he must have been close to 90. She'll be sad. Mom is 71 now herself. Dean Martin gave her a lot of pleasure.

by Anonymousreply 240July 24, 2020 4:57 AM

Ancient fags wailing about how 'shattered' they'll be when Faye Dunaway and Bobby Dylan kick it are much more annoying R241. Two people who've been commercially and physically dead for 25 years. Dean Martin is still alive to my mother and Liza Mary will blow her head off eventually. I wish you peace during your anticipatory grief list making R241. R268 why does she continue to fill stadiums like a rock star. Trust me peoples reality would be shaken if Oprah died her contribution to the culture through her show and new age garbage has been huge.

There are people who seem like they’ll always be there and like the space that they occupy cannot be filled by another human being..they’re irreplaceable. Oprah never had children because in some way, the people that tuned into her everyday were her children.

She represents success at such a high level just the fact that she supposedly did that show every damn day for 25 years without a sick day is remarkable. She really does represent making it from nothing and excellence. She’s from that generation where if you were a woman and black, and you made it, you held onto that success and guarded it like forever!

Now if she falls from public grace in a major way, like Whitney style or Britney style, and public perception changes, then people will care less.

by Anonymousreply 304July 26, 2020 2:45 PM

Well I hope you’re happy, this thread has killed Regis and Olivia already, how many others will die from your insolence?

by Anonymousreply 305July 26, 2020 4:57 PM

McCartney.

by Anonymousreply 306July 26, 2020 5:10 PM

I have told you the truth that came to pass, within a matter of days. I was criticized for it though I am a psychic posting from the future. So don't be surprised when Liza Mary blows her head off in a few days. Or if you seen Dean Martin being helped to his favorite table. I can only help so many of you - as many who are saved, that many more shall drown.

Dammit. I thought R305 was joking about Olivia's death. Oh well, at 104, she probably had a lot of health problems and was tired of life.

I'm fine with it.

by Anonymousreply 311July 27, 2020 2:42 AM

On a More Serious Note: I will be devastated, shattered, destroyed, totally distraught when Madam Speaker Pelosi crosses over. I can't even imagine a world without her. She has become my North Star.

When Donald Trump dies, I will explode and turn into a huge burst of confetti and shower the world with JOY beyond imagining. He is the AntiChrist that Nostradamus foretold.

by Anonymousreply 320July 28, 2020 6:04 PM

How are the Olivia and Reg people doing? Have you been able to pick yourselves up after the shattering?

by Anonymousreply 321July 28, 2020 6:22 PM

I want all the good people to live forever and all the evil people to die.

by Anonymousreply 322July 28, 2020 6:58 PM

R321 and R322, did you rejoice at the death of Osama bin Laden or just shrug your shoulders? There hasn't been any actor, musician or other celebrity whose death has affected you, eg. Kurt Cobain, Heath Ledger, Princess Di?

by Anonymousreply 323July 28, 2020 9:10 PM

I'm still sad when I think of Prince and Robin Williams. Especially Robin because of the emotional turmoil he must have felt.

I was heartbroken after Farrah. Her special on cancer had just aired, and while I knew it was coming my heart broke for her. I wish she lived long enough to castrate Ryan.

Dolly and Willie, I just dread it.

Kate Jackson, especially if she doesn't get herself together first. I'll probably have to start talking about her all weekend rather than just Fridays.

by Anonymousreply 324July 28, 2020 9:59 PM

hey. I was delighted when Obama took Osama bin Laden out. I cheered and screamed along with everyone else. I was crushed when Heath died. Felt really bad. Felt the shock and the sadness of Princess Diana, too. Didn't know much about Cobain. But WTF is your point. I think this thread is about future deaths not past ones.

by Anonymousreply 325July 28, 2020 9:59 PM

I will only celebrate Donald Trump's demise if he is sufficiently humiliated first. I don't want him to go quickly and without suffering. He needs to pay for what he's done.

Obama and Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be shattering, especially because the deplorables will be doing their best to tarnish their legacies.

I want Obama to live a very very long time.

by Anonymousreply 326July 28, 2020 10:05 PM

What is my point, R325? I'm criticising R321 and R322, who are mocking people who are affected by the death of celebrities.

I'll feel weird when Queen Elizabeth dies. She's been this presence my whole life, even though I'm American. I can't think of a movie star or music star I really feel so connected to that I'll be truly sad when they die. It might be weird to live in a world without Bruce Springsteen, maybe just because Born to Run was the first record I bought, but I don't think it's anything like the fact that Queen Elizabeth has been a world figure my entire life.

Still miss Johnny Carson (as others have noted)

Still Alive and would greatly miss:

Queen Elizabeth and oddly enough, Prince Philip as the two are like 'salt 'n pepper'

Justin Hayward from Moody Blues

Mick Jagger (saw him in concert in Sydney, Australia)

Stephen Frey

R265 - Poster upthread is right: Oprah will come nowhere near the gran scena that characterised the death, national mourning, and funeral of Diana. No one thought the monarchy would survive.

The only thing that would match Diana's passing is another assassination or the death of her mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II, By the Grace of God Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and her Territories Beyond the Seas. And even that won't quite match up because HM will be either 100+ or close to it.

Diana's death was a stratospheric occurrence that those of us who witnessed it know won't be easily matched.

My sister called me at 7AM to tell me Diana had died hours earlier.

"YOU FUCKING CALLED ME HOURS LATER INSTEAD OF RIGHT AWAY TO TELL ME SHE DIED?! I yelled?

"I didn't want to wake you up," she said contritely.

Now she calls me if her granddaughter wakes up teething.

That old bitch’s death won’t mean anything personal or sentimental outside the U.K. (which in reality is quite small.)

Sean Connery?

by Anonymousreply 374October 31, 2020 12:45 PM

Morgan Freeman's death will devastate you, OP?

Julie Andrews?

Chita Rivera?

Queen Elizabeth II?

They're all in their 80s and 90s. Their deaths will not be devastating...just natural.

The deaths of Heath Ledger and Chadwick Boseman were devastating, because they died young and at the height of their careers. Or the death of B actors Paul Walker or Andy Whitfield because they were tragic deaths too.
