Coronavirus Freakout 22 - Apocalypse Now

'And as I looked down upon the street, a man passed pushing a barrow, and on it I saw a woman's body, half covered in a shroud, pale with bruising and livid blue bubons on the side of the neck.'

Samuel Pepys, Plague Journal

Great title, OP.

Someone in the last thread was asking about the numbers for TEXAS ....

and the large difference in the number of cases between what the John Hopkins' resource was reporting (394) versus what was being reported by the Texas Department of Health Services (194).

Well, the Houston Chronicle says its tracker is using data from the CDC, and in the attached article it was last showing 417, so that's much closer to the Johns Hopkins' tracker (which is now up to 424) for the state. So the state's Department of Health seems like it's way behind.

From the last thread:

[quote] another hallmark is to feel better (many anecdotal stories saying that people were told by the sick person on how much better they felt, and they thought that they were coming home soon), then die the next day.

I've previously read that's how it was with the Spanish Flu, and they even depicted this in "Downton Abbey" when Lavinia died from it, in what was supposed to be April 1919.

And now, when anyone dares to point out that the deniers and minimizers were wrong, and that their denial and stupidity will likely make the death toll far worse than it needed to be, they say we're "politicizing" the crisis and causing "hysteria" and that it's not fair to engage in "finger-pointing." Stupid cunts indeed.

Me and my friend were speaking today and he said “not for nothing, I hope this scares people away from NYC. This city needs a lot less people. With a lot less people this wouldn’t be happening the way it is.”

It’s so true.

Idk why people gloat about NYC having over 8 million people, and it’s always transplants. True story. Most of us Natives know that’s recipe for disaster.

Thanks, R13. I was the one who asked about the Texas cases. The Houston Chronicle numbers do seem to be in line with Johns Hopkins. I wonder why the State Department of Health Services is so behind? DHS shows only 5 cases for Tarrant County (my county). But the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is reporting 29 cases, which is what the Chronicle is also reporting for Tarrant. I'll book mark that Chronicle site since it seems more up to date than the state site.

The goal is to have them dispatched before any call for a national quarantine. The reason: Stop looters and other violence.

They will announce this as soon as they have troops in place to help prevent looters and rioters and will announce before the end of the weekend." (Courtesy Washington Examiner, 20 March 2020)

I still don't get how all these small businesses, restaurants, pubs and hotels will survive this and what our economy will be like after this crisis. Almost everything besides grocery stores is already closed in my city. The UK just ordered that all restaurants and pubs must close. A lot, if not most, will be bankrupt in 2-3 months. Will they reopen? Will the employees come back or have a lot of them already moved to live with parents or family or found new employment? Is our money or retirement funds safe or will the whole banking system and social security collapse? Will there be hordes of homelesspeople on the streets who lost their homes due to unemployment or bankruptcy? Will people still have money to buy new cars, iPhones or go on vacations in the next couple of years? Very strange times.

[quote]it's airborne. Just breathing spreads it. Also, things like scratch your nose or rub your eyes and then use the keypad at the checkout.

I still hear doctors going back and forth about the "airborne" theory. One on NBC with Lester Holt the other night seemed to resist it and said the "real" source of transmission is being sneezed or coughed on by an infected person, that it's airborne but not long enough to be that much of a threat until it descends and lands on a surface, which someone could later come by and touch. But then I have heard/read other theories that, yes, it's airborne, so who the fuck knows.

Given how many people are getting sick, though, you can't help but believe that it actually is.

by Anonymousreply 60March 21, 2020 7:24 AM

I'm not sure I'm gonna make it through this. It's been a really long time, relatively speaking, since we've heard about anyone breezing through the illness. All we've been hearing about is how awful it is and how everyone is dying these horrible deaths. I can't avoid people if I'm going to get deliveries of supplies. How will I do laundry if it lives on surfaces?

And forget about the virus for a moment. What happens when society breaks down? We're about two-four weeks away from that. So I get to bar myself in my apartment until someone with a gun decides they want all my supplies and kills me. And if that doesn't happen, I get to watch my money quickly dwindle down to zero and wonder how I'm going to keep a roof over my head.

I gotta get out before it gets too much worse.

by Anonymousreply 61March 21, 2020 7:28 AM

R61, I don't know where you're posting from but that's why I love the PIX11 morning news here in NYC. The anchor team, Dan and Betty, after giving you all the bad numbers, doom and gloom, etc., always makes a point of reminding the viewers that "80% of people survive this" and "no matter what, we're all in this together," etc. It's quite uplifting for a news broadcast during a scary and uncertain time like this.

Are you in New York? New York is America's Wuhan and Italy's Lombardy. They should have been locked down two weeks ago. The rest of the country, at least the parts taking this seriously (aka blue states with competent governments), might have acted quickly enough locking everything down. As stated above, Washington is getting a handle on it. They are a week or two ahead of the blue states that are locked down. The blue states need to shut down their borders to keep out the red state dumbfucks.

More troubling news from Indonesia

Guardian-Indonesia has confirmed 81 new coronavirus cases and six more deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 450 and deaths to 38, a health ministry official told reporters on Saturday, Reuters reports.

by Anonymousreply 67March 21, 2020 9:31 AM

Remember when people thought the heat would limit it? Now we have tropical places recording high numbers.

by Anonymousreply 68March 21, 2020 9:46 AM

R68. So true

by Anonymousreply 69March 21, 2020 9:51 AM

Indonesia just recently increased its testing.

[quote]The number of tests carried out has increased significantly from the 220 completed just over a week ago, leading to a rise in identified cases. On Thursday, 82 more patients were confirmed to have the virus, the country’s biggest daily increase yet, bringing the total to 309.

[quote]Indonesia did not record a single confirmed case until 2 March. Officials have previously rejected suggestions that cases were going undetected in the country.

[quote]On Thursday, Widodo said mass testing was needed and he would introduce drive-through tests. “I ask that the number of testing kits and the number of test centres are increased and we get more hospitals involved,” he said.

What will the Brits do without football and going to the pubs?

by Anonymousreply 71March 21, 2020 10:12 AM

R11 You may be right about Australia but maybe not.

Beaches on the southern part of the city have been ordered closed now. Other beaches expected to follow very soon.

Whilst their are now over 1000 cases in Australia most of them are from returning travellers from the U.S., the EU and other parts of the world. The next largest chunk are from people who have had close contact with them (Australia is very good at tracking). There are still a number being invested but there are only 60 community transmissions of the virus for which a link cannot be found - this will grow.

Australian (and New Zealand) just closed their borders to foreign nationals. Tourists and foreign nationals already in Australia (and NZ) are basically stuck in the countries for at least 6 months and are being granted bridging visas.

The number of international flights flying into the country and reduced dramatically and only citizens on board. These will stop altogether at the end of the month (all people returning to both countries must self-isolate at home and a randomly checked by police to ensure they are complying - heavy fines and possible jail time if you don't).

The Australian Government has just recalled all Australian diplomats to return home by the end of this week. The Government is also arranging to conduct flights like those to Wuhan and collect Australians who wish to come home. Its highly likely all those people will be placed into quarantine. And those flight (still be arranged) are limited and essentially people that can't make them are stuck out of the country for at least 6 months.

The Government is already preparing lockdown for certain suburbs were small clusters have formed, however I suspect it will be a country wide lockdown. The plan is to eliminate the virus from both countries as China has done so that in 8 weeks or so the country can have some kind or normality.

Also, expect bars, restaurants, clubs, casinos, cinemas that are still open to be ordered to shut indefinitely within days.

On top of this Australia has tested more people per head or population than all countries expect for South Korea & Singapore. Australia has also tested more people on a numbers basis alone more than most countries except for South Korea & China.

Its unlikely but still possible that the virus has a foothold in Australia - and its the community transmissions with no connection to overseas travellers that are actually the most telling numbers. Though praise to the media for hyping up the crossing of the 1,000 mark because its scarring the shit out of everyone like it should.

It isn’t airborne like measles is airborne where the virus stays in the air like a bird. It is in water droplets and water droplets are released when people speak, not just when they sneeze or cough. (That’s why masks are so important in the hospitals.) You could absolutely be infected by an asymptotic close talker or asymptomatic high spittle talker. (Plus of course the touch the eyes, touch the door handle, touch the eyes transmissions.)

by Anonymousreply 76March 21, 2020 11:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 78March 21, 2020 11:54 AM

Exactly, R76. You don't have to come in close contact with an infected person. An infected spittle talker sprays a bit of virus on his hands while he's talking or even clearing his throat, then touches a door knob. Bingo!

Or he touches an item in a grocery store, then decides not to buy it. You pick it up and take it home, where it can infect anyone in your house who touches the package.

I just returned from a grocery store run to pick up things for my mother. I went the instant the store opened at 7:00am, there were only about 8 people plus staff, I wore a mask and gloves, but at one point I accidentally bumped my eyelid with my gloved hand and now I'm going to spend the rest of the next 10 days freaking out waiting for symptoms. Fuck this shit.

by Anonymousreply 82March 21, 2020 12:23 PM

In some respects it is becoming clearer how easy it is to AVOID this goddamn thing. Keep apart, always be mindful of your hands, always wash the damn things.

I have never been so humble. We throw around die in a grease fire so easily here and the like. In this climate I won’t wish death on anybody, not even in hyperbole. Over here. Which is a fuck of a challenge. ;)

On a grump note, I note the poll has been left out of the thread format again. Am I the only one who finds it an interesting if unscientific measure. Should I start one separately and hope the poll gets added in future?

by Anonymousreply 96March 21, 2020 12:59 PM

R61, I think we all appreciate how dire the news is, but the leap that you’re making to societal breakdown in a few weeks is unwarranted.

That said, people are still not taking the request to quarantine seriously enough. Some jackass friend hosted a party at his home last night and put up pics on FB with the caption, “I heard alcohol kills the Coronavirus. We’re about to test that theory out.” Eight people visible — apparently thinking that it was OK because it was fewer than 10 — and they were not all six feet apart. I’m shifting towards being torn about the mass devastation affecting the poorest Americans versus the number of deaths. Yes, I believe it needs to be contained by isolation, minimizing contact, repetitive hand washing and avoiding face touching. But the effects of the complete shutdown are really horrific for huge numbers of struggling people and are being minimized by the WFH class.

The ruling chattering classes can work from home. Those who were barely getting by can not and are being told to do without income for possibly months. Given that nothing will reopen until cases decline and we have barely begun the ascent, the shutdown will have to last months. No income for months is devastating to the point of life-risking. And, while I have an elderly mother and a sibling with advanced cancer who could easily die from this, the average age of death of 80 in Italy makes me seriously debate the lives we are saving physically versus the lives we are destroying economically to the point of devastating psychological and physical effect.

R100, I glimpsed one of my neighbors in her front yard a couple of houses down from mine on the opposite side of the street, and we didn't wave or acknowledge each other. She and I are generally pretty good friends, but there's nothing to say or do.

I have not seen any of my other neighbors in more than a week, and there are 11 houses on our quiet little block. Not many cars drive past, either.

by Anonymousreply 104March 21, 2020 1:29 PM

[quote]Exactly, [R76].

^^ THIS. I actually wonder how many of the current infections are a result of the patient TOUCHING something and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth without having washed their hands.

Yes, the virus can be transmitted person-to-person if someone coughs or sneezes in close proximity to you, but I would think it's MUCH easier for transmission via touching a contaminated surface since we touch hundreds of things every day.

by Anonymousreply 106March 21, 2020 1:38 PM

R61, stay cool. I know it’s hard. There are lot of online places and telephones still to call if you’re freaked out and need to talk to someone.

So here is my understanding of how the virus is transmitted:

First, by getting too close to someone who is infected. That’s visible sometimes, and sometimes not. When it is, it’s easy to step back. If it’s not, six feet should do you because generally the risk of infection as I understand it is inhaling their droplets. This happens most when people are coughing.

Second, by droplets on surfaces. So basically the virus survives in general longest on plastic and metal. That is about three days they think. And during those three days, the virus weakens so if it is there it gets far less potent as time passes.

So in that context, what do you do? If you receive packages, wear gloves, put them aside for a period of time you feel comfortable with. The virus isn’t going to jump off the box and infect you. You have to touch it, then you have to touch your face (usually mouth, nose or eyes.) And remember that most package deliveries are just leaving it at the door these days... you pick up the box, you don’t take it from another person’s hands. I had to get a new iPad yesterday because my laptop died. It’s gotten so no contact they left THAT at the door, no signature.

I am going to post a link and a couple others subsequently from what I see as reliable sources to give you information about surfaces and virus life.

Two pieces of advice, because I think you’re as nervous as most of us and from time to time during my day I freak out... I get hot, even a bit sweaty, and think this is the fever! Then it passes. It’s anxiety and fear response. (Or has been so far!)

So advice one: acknowledge your fear and panic when you feel really frightened. Then go online and find something that works for you by Googling Coronavirus fear and panic. ACT - to gain a sense of control.

Advice two: have a plan. I know you fear the virus lying around. I do too. It may not always be logical, but logic is running second or third place a lot these days. SO ACT BY MAKING A PLAN. Think through what you’re going to do. I.e. if I need to receive groceries I think through what is going to happen and what I can do in the context of avoiding the virus. And whatever I do, when it’s over: I WASH MY HANDS. Try the field level risk assessment approach, or your own variation of it. Link below.

I hope this helps a bit. Above all, ACT to feel more in control and WASH YOUR HANDS. Xo

New York women are coronavirus crushing on Andrew Cuomo: ‘Is he single?’

.

He’s the new Luv Guv.

Women are crushing on Gov. Andrew Cuomo — calling his coronavirus press conferences their daily “fix” — during this state of emergency.

Denise Albert, a 45-year-old divorcee on the Upper West Side, is officially smitten.

“For me, it was when I heard him say, ‘My mother is light and joy,’” Albert, co-founder of multi-media company The Moms, told The Post. “What also got me was his speaking about family dynamics — disagreeing with his brother about where his mom should be. … It’s relatable, vulnerable, inspirational. There’s nothing hotter than vulnerability in a man.”

Talia Reese, a married mom of two from Great Neck, LI, thinks Andrew Cuomo sounds like Al Pacino. The comedian said she and her friends text each other when he’s on TV, with one of them declaring: “Cuomo press conference right now. Morning fix.”

“It’s like all these women are back in high school. We‘re all in our pajamas, eating ice cream in bed, and he’s in a sharp suit, looking clean,” the 40-something Reese said of the third-term Democrat’s televised briefings.

And the single ladies note that Cuomo, 62, split from longtime author girlfriend of 14 years, TV personality Sandra Lee, in September.

“Is Governor Cuomo single? Not asking for a friend,” Albert posted on Facebook.

“How could I not fall in love with him? He doesn’t use notes or screens, he’s smart, his voice is strong,” said Manhattan divorcee Ilene Beckerman, whose book inspired “Love, Lost and What I Wore,” a popular off-Broadway show. “I’m almost 85 and finally think I know about men. He’s a keeper.”

Even the radio voice of the Yankees, WFAN’s Suzyn Waldman, told The Post she’s crazy about the divorced dad of three girls.

“He’s decisive, calming, gets things done — and he’s drop dead gorgeous,” said the 73-year-old divorcee. “Everybody always looks for someone who will say, ‘It’s going to be OK.’”

They are sooo SMART!!!

A kickboxing match in Thailand led to a spike in Coronavirus infections.

At least 104 people left the Bangkok’s Lumpini Stadium infected with coronavirus after a major Muay Thai match there on March 6. The spike significantly complicated the country’s ability to stamp out the pandemic easily.

The Muay Thai match infections make up more than a quarter of the 411 known cases in the country.

“The more people who report themselves, the easier it is for us to track down others with the virus before it’s too late.” said Dr. Thaveesin Visanuyothin, a spokesman for the Public Health Ministry.

A second mini-outbreak in the country was traced back to a group of millennials at an upscale party at a Bangkok nightclub with a visitor from Hong Kong. The groups earned a reprimand by Thai authorities for sharing drinks and cigarettes.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha has closed schools, and major gathering spaces, but has insisted the country will avoid a total lockdown.

I still wonder if the flu vaccine in the USA is somehow protecting many infected people from the extreme case of CV...I know the flu vaccine can’t keep people from getting CV, but maybe it is reducing the severity. by Anonymousreply 137March 21, 2020 2:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 142March 21, 2020 2:55 PM

In that movie, it turned out that Law and his investors were making a ton of money promoting a phony cure that didn’t work. Law’s character was doing TV interviews telling people not to listen to doctors who were all lying on behalf of the oligarchy, listen to him about forsythia.

I wouldn’t put it past Trump and Ivanka to be investing in this drug and then telling everyone it’s the miracle cure. His family is capable of anything.

Cuomo, at least, will have it scientifically tested and find out quickly if it works or not. Notice Trump isn’t doing that, he’s just promoting an untested drug.

Jim Cramer thinks that after this pandemic is over, the only retailers left standing will be Amazon, Walmart and Costco. Most small businesses will have to shut down.

‘ASKING’ people to comply with voluntary measures does not work. Why are government officials all over the world not realizing this?

[quote]Authorities in Sydney are closing Bondi Beach after crowds gathered at the iconic waterfront site to take in the sun and swim, effectively ignoring warnings about the importance of social distancing to help prevent the novel coronavirus from spreading.

[quote]Images of massive crowds went viral Friday, prompting outrage from concerned citizens and members of government. CNN affiliate 7 News Sydney said that "thousands" of people had gathered there Friday.

People are assholes. They will continue doing whatever they want as long as they are allowed to. Governments need to wake the fuck UP.

I don't listen in to Trump's "press conferences" for information, r186. I find him highly amusing in his dysfunction. Yesterday was absolutely priceless losing it over such an innocuous question. I love seeing his pathology on full display. He thinks he's in control of himself but in fact, his dark side governs every action, every thought. I pay particular attention to Trump when someone else is speaking at the podium. I watch Trump fidget, look for fawning fans in the audience and reward them with 'personal' fleeting smiles, touch and move the experts on the podium like chess pieces. He CANNOT STAND STILL AND THINK to save his life. Fascinating yet frightening. I should add I also enjoy watch the Dr. (Fauci?) as he tries to sidestep his master's verbal gaffes.

by Anonymousreply 189March 21, 2020 4:31 PM

Id. That's all you get with him. Roiling, churning, unmitigated id. No super-ego to challenge it. No ego to balance anything. Just id.

Did Cheatolini have a press briefing today? I didn’t see one on the networks.

I agree with R189. I don’t watch him for information, but purely for the entertainment factor.

by Anonymousreply 191March 21, 2020 4:34 PM

We're awaiting his presser, R191. It was originally scheduled for noon, moved to 12:30 and it hasn't started yet.

Let's step back into the "good old days" when drug trial testing was done on prisoners.

😵 Of course it was all voluntary.

r194 and because he wanted to fuck him. Trump is closet-gay just like Pence.

by Anonymousreply 197March 21, 2020 4:54 PM

He’s been seething and fuming for days from a combination of negative press coverage, the stock market free-fall and having to cancel his rallies and weekend golf trips and partying at Mar-a-Lago. His public appearances at those awful press conferences get more erratic and unhinged every day.

by Anonymousreply 198March 21, 2020 4:57 PM

Not only was the man from MSNBC handsome, he was far more intelligent than the Unstable Genius.

by Anonymousreply 199March 21, 2020 4:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 200March 21, 2020 4:57 PM

The number of coronavirus in New York City jumped to 7,530 Saturday, according to figures released by City Hall.

That was a leap of 1,847 cases overnight, even as the majority of the city was on near lockdown. The increase is mainly due to a significant increase in testing. State figures show 19,463 tests have been done in the city, including 5,077 Friday.

At least 45 people have died in the five boroughs from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. On Friday alone, 12 people died between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., or more than one per hour.

The city said early Saturday that Queens is the hardest hit, with 2,077 cases. There are 1,791 cases in Manhattan, 2,275 in Brooklyn, 1,005 in the Bronx and 375 in Staten Island.

There were 1,160 people hospitalized from Covid-19 as of 5 p.m. Friday, including 260 in intensive care.

The city is now the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S., with 38 percent of the total 19,931 confirmed cases and 16 percent of the nation’s 275 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University’s virus tracker.

New York State has more than 10,000 cases, accounting for more than half of the total, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Saturday.

- Pharmacies and medical marijuana dispensaries

- Medical supply stores

- Gas stations

- Convenience stores

- Ancillary stores within healthcare facilities

- Hardware and home improvement stores

- Banks and other financial institutions

- Laundromats and dry-cleaning services

- Stores that principally sell supplies for children under five years

- Pet stores

- Liquor stores

- Car dealerships, but only for auto maintenance and repair, and auto mechanics

- Printing and office supply shops

- Mail and delivery stores

The idea Italian DNA is more prone to the virus is, if anything, the kind of garbage that bubbles up out of the internet. It stinks like Facebook. Italy is suffering because of a combination of viral spread, social distancing that could have been stronger, earlier and a large population of elderly.

I would not fear your Italian DNA is going to play a part in your fate. Xo

I'm really concerned about pet stores having to close completely or if we get to the point of a complete lockdown. Anything that would result in having the rescue animals being returned to shelters or rescue HQs. I was told that my rescue HQ doesn't have room to house all our cats that are out at pet store adoption centers.

There aren't many teenagers tested positive. I'm surprised no one has concluded anything on this fact. Are teenagers highly resistant? How does their immune system react to the invasion? Is it possible that their immune system eradicates the virus so fast hence low number of cases? These teenagers might not be contagious even they get infected. Their grandparents maybe can use some help if they're indeed resistant.

According to a survey by Purina, most people buy their cat & dog food at Walmart. They have a huge selection, something for everyone's budget. Cat litter and toys, too.

You can also purchase, of course, at your local grocery store.

I have stray MomCat and her three daughters who expect two meals and fresh water every twice daily. Mom is about 7, the oldest daughter is 3, and the youngest girls will both be 1 on May 24th. They are the bright spot in my day during these gloomy times.

R307: I was thinking on that today. I think when normal returns, whenever that is, there will be many people looking at how their employer supported them during this and deciding whether they want to stay. Did you put your bottom line first or your people first? Similarly you might see some early retirements - people who say fuck it, there’s more to life than this. You might see many more if the stock market rebounds.

I do think there will be a great deal of reflection on a lot of fronts... marriages, relationships, work.... everything will be up for reconsideration.

R363, I was wondering that too. I don’t remember, but I do remember one of the psychics in our prediction thread, I think it was Oracle, saying over and over, save your money, save your money. They were saying this for months. I actually didn’t buy several planned purchases or go on trips because of that prediction. I don’t remember the prediction around it, but every time I wanted to buy something, I thought of that prediction.

In late January, early February, I was first hearing the news from China, I remembered that prediction and every weekend for a while I had a different vaccination. That’s when I started stocking up. I would get a vaccine at Costco or Sams, and then buy some stuff. I kept remembering that prediction, and I only bought the necessities. I didn’t know how bad it would get then, of course. But I had a sense of, hurry up, hurry up. So I bought some stuff not believing it myself. But it was stuff I would use anyway.

Week by week, as the news got worse, I started buying a few more “just in case” things I usually buy anyway. Towards the end, I was just buying stuff, shoving it in my dining room, and having a sense of great urgency. Buy it first, sort it later, after you can’t go out any more. I’ve spent the last week or so sorting it.

Thanks Oracle, or whoever you are.

Very disturbing comment from U.S. reader: We don't have the proper PPE here either. Running low on hand sanitizer, making us wear a simple mask when we should be wearing N95, reusing PPE, taking care of different populations of patients so cross contamination risk is very high, not testing people because turnaround time is too slow and not enough testing kits. I am terrified of unintentionally infecting a vulnerable patient and bringing it home and infecting my partner. And I can't complain at work at risk of being terminated. So signing petitions, contacting state representatives, and now commenting here on the DM, praying we get what we need to keep us and our patients safe. God help us all.

[quote] The infected numbers should start leveling off in the next week. As soon as that happens, people are going to be pouring into the streets, even if it's a little too early.

That is ludicrous, R380. No scientist has suggested that one week of SOME people staying in will level off the numbers. Where are you getting that from? Did you see the scenes from Florida and Texas with the Spring Break revelers? There were millions of people not heeding the warnings. The number of people doing this the right way is sadly minuscule.

As the numbers climb, people better wake the fuck up and sit their asses down.

Damn.

Another lined their front porch railing with large stuffed animals. Probably a kid did it but it was cute, made me smile. Now I want to decorate my front yard with something ridiculous.

Article from a respiratory therapist who works in an ICU in NOLA:

New Orleans had held Mardi Gras celebrations just two weeks before its first patient, with more than a million revelers on its streets. I spoke to a respiratory therapist there, whose job is to ensure that patients are breathing well. He works in a medium-sized city hospital’s intensive care unit. (We are withholding his name and employer, as he fears retaliation.)

He is overwhelmed, stunned by the manifestation of the infection, both its speed and intensity. The ICU where he works has essentially become a coronavirus unit. He estimates that his hospital has admitted dozens of confirmed or presumptive coronavirus patients. About a third have ended up on ventilators.

“I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I’m seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they’ve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.”

That seems to be what happens to a lot of these patients: They suddenly become unresponsive or go into respiratory failure. It’s called acute respiratory distress syndrome, ARDS. That means the lungs are filled with fluid. And it’s notable for the way the X-ray looks: The entire lung is basically whited out from fluid. Patients with ARDS are extremely difficult to oxygenate. It has a really high mortality rate, about 40%.

Normally, ARDS is something that happens over time as the lungs get more and more inflamed. But with this virus, it seems like it happens overnight. Viruses can injure cells in the walls of the alveoli, so the fluid leaks into the alveoli. A telltale sign of ARDS in an X-ray is what’s called ‘ground glass opacity,’ like an old-fashioned ground glass privacy window in a shower. And lungs look that way because fluid is white on an X-ray, so the lung looks like white ground glass, or sometimes pure white, because the lung is filled with so much fluid, displacing where the air would normally be.

“It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy shit, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you’re in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don’t know when someone is trying to help you, so you’ll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning.“

“I worked a long stretch of days last week, and I watched it go from this novelty to a serious issue. We had one or two patients at our hospital, and then five to 10 patients, and then 20 patients. Every day, the intensity kept ratcheting up. More patients, and the patients themselves are starting to get sicker and sicker. When it first started, we all had tons of equipment, tons of supplies, and as we started getting more patients, we started to run out. They had to ration supplies. At first we were trying to use one mask per patient. Then it was just: You get one mask for positive patients, another mask for everyone else. And now it’s just: You get one mask.“

They closed at 8pm tonight (I saw the sign when I got there), but they unlocked the door and gave me the wine for free... I was grateful, need some wine tonight. They seemed grateful too....Nice family. Wish them the best.

Im a little worried but trying not to freak out. I have been downing vitamins multiple times a day, and making sure I actually get at least 8 hours of sleep which is never the case with me.

Saturn conjunct Pluto will create havoc amongst: government systems, big businesses and authority that have been overstepping their control and sense of order. We are already seeing this happening everywhere and expect it to peak from now till the end of February. Saturn conjunct Pluto is not playing around and due to the fact that both are meeting up in “forever” Capricorn, the repercussions will long lasting and serious. I like to think of Saturn and Pluto as the “planetary judges” that will leave no stone un-turned in the name of work- ability and justice. Prepare for massive breakdowns of structures. This might be hard to hear but truth be told, they were never built on solid ground to begin with. A karmic reset button is upon us and wherever 22 degrees of Capricorn falls in your chart is where you will see such transformations and re-order happening.

Saturn conjunct Pluto is here to breakdown structures that are long over due for transformation. While this aspect is intense and “full on” in nature, these two have a lesson in allowing us to be ok with breakdowns. In fact, its in the face of breakdowns where there is an opportunity to create breakthroughs. If we don’t acknowledge what isn’t working, we can never create what will work. Karma never loses an address and these two meeting up will make that very clear and present for everyone.

Saturn conjunct Pluto wants you to face reality and be prepared for whatever life throws your way. The two planets meeting up in the sign of the goat are here to bring: ultimate transformation to outdated systems, the willpower to make anything happen and the karmic justice you deserve.

[quote]Speaking via Facebook live Saturday, Conte announced that the more severe measures were necessary due to the increasing number of coronavirus deaths. Italy has recorded 53,578 cases and 4,825 deaths.

by Anonymousreply 425March 22, 2020 2:41 AM

This is why Pres. Trump hates on the Washington Post in those press conferences. The fact that this opinion piece is most likely true would be even more galling to him.

(Excerpts)

[quote] This wouldn’t have happened if Hillary Clinton had won

[quote] I weep in anger and frustration imagining what might have been if Hillary Clinton — a sane, sensible adult — had won. We couldn’t have avoided the coronavirus, but we could have ameliorated its effects. We could be South Korea (102 deaths) rather than Italy (4,825 deaths and counting).

[quote] This was the result of post-Cold War, post-9/11 complacency, with voters imagining that they could take peace and prosperity for granted. If the coronavirus should teach us anything, it is that governing is a deadly serious business. Electing a grown-up isn’t a luxury; it’s a matter of life and death. The price of “owning the libs” turns out to be far higher than even most Trump critics could have imagined.

[quote] I knew he would be a bad president — but even I didn’t expect him to be Herbert Hoover-level bad. In a way, you almost can’t blame Trump for his epic incompetence: He is who he is. He didn’t deceive anyone. I blame the voters who elected him — and the senators who refused to impeach him. They should have known better. Because they didn’t, we will all pay a fearful price.

by Anonymousreply 439March 22, 2020 3:07 AM

It doesn't fucking hang in the air. Anyone heard of gravity? Thanks for the heads up that something was happening earlier this year, but quit inciting fear. Be vigilant, but continue to live your life. I was at a Best Buy earlier and they marked off 6 feet in the line. But...when you went to the cashier you were probably 3 feet in front of the cashier and 3 or 4 feet next to the other customer. If anything this has really highlighted the stupid.

by Anonymousreply 440March 22, 2020 3:08 AM

The known mortality stats for under 50s are like 0.2-0.3%. And 50s, 1.3%. Despite the horrific descriptions of gasping for air, it’s odd that more young people aren’t dying. Did China have better treatment - and Italy? The old age skew is real.

I question if we are destroying society for the majority to save those over 70. Maybe this is natures way of correcting for the growth in the old and extremely old. I say this as someone who has an elderly parent at a high risk and a sibling with cancer. The medical interventions to keep the old and dying alive risk bankrupting everyone under 60. And not just CV.

by Anonymousreply 441March 22, 2020 3:20 AM

Inciting fear? It hangs inthe air for three hours. This is per UCLA, not some unverified rumor. If you are walking behind someone who is shedding the virus, you could get the virus. There seemed to be a growing curiosity from this new generation to learn about what went on back then, which I thought was fantastic because so many younger people have no idea. I've been thinking about my parents (children of the Depression/teenagers of WWII) and my grandparents a lot this past week. And what they would have to say about all of this. Not the virus, but the behavior -- the panic shopping, gross hoarding....

I still have my grandparents' last/half-used WWII ration books, as well as my dad's, before he was drafted. That generation (or two generations) rationed & changed their behavior -- sacrificing for the greater good -- for THREE YEARS!! Surely, we can do the same for three weeks (or months), can't we??

And, wouldn't it have been smarter to just order a 100% quarantine for everyone over 55? Complete lockdown. Can't leave their homes. Can't go to work. Set up care services and hot lines to get their food and supplies until this was over. I wonder even though I'm 62 fat and not healthy I took the flu and pneumonia vaccine maybe if I get it it will be mild.

by Anonymousreply 490March 22, 2020 5:07 AM

R490 I mean this with all the care anyone can have for others - get a clue.

Its not likely to be just two weeks. Just say indefinitely.

Those 'last meals' are likely putting you into a vulnerable spot if you get the virus.

You're the only one getting drive through because people are self-isolating and either getting delivery or had stocked up on groceries.

Vaccines will have minimal use in this case, if any.

Most populations are more likely than not to get a mild case, but as you describe yourself as a 60-something in seemingly unhealthy condition and exposing yourself unnecessarily, I'd so far put you in one of the worse spots. You're not working soon. You're need assistance. And you need to isolate yourself as much as possible, and sanitize yourself whenever returning home.

For those posters who keep going on about letting the old folks die or quarantining everyone over a certain age, the CDC said on Wednesday that 40% of hospitalized patients with CV are 20-54 and half in ICU are under 65. There are younger people dying. Maybe not as high a rate as the over 60 crowd, but I think you're not understanding how bad CV is (especially for men) for everyone over 20.

Even for the seasonal flu, the shot only protects a person for (maybe) 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 495March 22, 2020 5:26 AM

Exactly, R494. Also, although people under age 50 are statistically more likely to live, we currently have no idea what long term damage this does to organs such as the lungs and heart.

Men are far more likely to die of the 2020 Plague:

Why is the coronavirus so much more deadly for men than for women? by Melissa Healy, Los Angeles Time, Updated: March 21, 2020 - 5:08 PM Why is the coronavirus so much more deadly for men than for women? DAVID J. PHILLIP / AP A person is taken on a stretcher into the United Memorial Medical Center after going through testing for COVID-19. Men are faring worse than women in the coronavirus pandemic, according to statistics emerging from across the world.

This week, White House COVID-19 Task Force director Dr. Deborah Birx cited a report from Italy showing that men in nearly every age bracket were dying at higher rates than women. Birx called it a “concerning trend.”

The apparent gender gap in Italy echoes earlier statistics from other hard-hit countries. While preliminary, early accounts have suggested that boys and men are more likely to become seriously ill than are girls and women, and that men are more likely to die.

Italian health authorities last week reported that among 13,882 cases of COVID-19 and 803 deaths between Feb. 21 and Mar. 12, men accounted for 58% of all cases and 72% of deaths. Hospitalized men with COVID-19 were 75% more likely to die than were women hospitalized with the respiratory disease.

Those figures are in line with early accounts from China, where the novel coronavirus first appeared, and from South Korea, where detection and tracking of coronavirus infections have been very comprehensive.

by Anonymousreply 503March 22, 2020 6:07 AM

R494, I understand your numbers but my point is that if you remove the old people from the illness equation for the most part, the system will not be overwhelmed by the younger people who are sick and are more likely to recover with treatment. Also, it would leave the younger people free to provide the services that would be needed by the elderly who were quarantined. A huge number of that population is already retired and spend a lot of their time at home. The ones that don't would just have to deal. The country cannot stay shut down indefinitely. They should quarantine everyone for two weeks and then let the younger people start to go back to work and see what happens.

What is the point of using 55+% of the ventilators on people who you could have kept from getting deathly ill in the first place and overwhelming the health care providers to the point where everyone is getting shitty care? Hell, at this point, considering the numbers, maybe they should also quarantine all the men over 20, too. If this disproportionately killed people over 6 feet tall, don't you think it would make sense to quarantine people over 6 ft tall?

One thing about men is that they're notorious for not going to the doctor, which could mean that some of these COVID-19 male victims could have had some underlying, undiagnosed, and therefore untreated, medical condition.

I'm thinking that because medical teams are basically working in a warzone right now, perhaps they don't have the time or the resources to diagnose a patient's heretofore unknown medical conditions to determine if something else is contributing to his decline and ultimate demise.

I agree with you, r508. We can't continue to chip away at a full quarantine. Every human, not needed in critical positions of medical staff, food supply, or other infrastructure needs to stop for at least 18 days. It's the only way to stop casual infection. And cough up the money to assuage fears of being without necessities, right now.

We were due for a financial reset; a complete reset, not the 2008 bandaid. It can be done methodically or catastrophically. That is a choice for the IMF to make. We are in thrall to Kristalina Georgieva and her mentor, the wicked witch Lagarde. Pay attention to ugly Mnuchin, and pray he has the ability to improvise.

God help us all.

I was so fortunate to see mountain gorillas and Chimpanzees in January before the crisis.

Guardian-Covid-19 could pose a threat to Africa’s endangered mountain gorilla, conservationists have warned. From AP:

Congo’s Virunga National Park, home to about a third of the world’s mountain gorillas, is barring visitors until 1 June, citing advice from scientific experts indicating that primates, including mountain gorillas, are likely susceptible to complications arising from the Covid-19 virus.

Neighboring Rwanda also is temporarily shutting down tourism and research activities in three national parks that are home to primates such as gorillas and chimpanzees.

Mountain gorillas are prone to some respiratory illnesses that afflict humans. A common cold can kill a gorilla, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature, one reason why tourists tracking gorillas are not normally permitted to get too close.

by Anonymousreply 517March 22, 2020 10:26 AM

That's the thing, R504, I think this hits younger people at higher levels and with worse intensity than we know (or, what has been dislosed to the public). In my area, over 50% of diagnosed cases are people <40 and they make up a bit over 40% of the ventilator population. We won't flatten the curve, so what happens when hospitals are overwhelmed? The under 40s will get the ventilators but even still there will not be enough to go around.

by Anonymousreply 518March 22, 2020 11:52 AM

Giving the side eye to the "experts" who keep claiming you need to get sneezed on or coughed on to catch this thing. Please. Literally NO ONE is sneezing, coughing and sputtering openly in close proximity to others these days. That kind of behavior will get you chased down by a lynch mob. It's in the air and on objects, obviously. It's everywhere. And elders hunkering down at home, not seeing anyone, are not safe either. It's on their mail and packages of food.

Same thing happened a hundred years ago with the Spanish flu. Back then Americans in many areas of the country were much better able to self isolate. Farmers could sustain themselves on their own home grown food for months without seeing anyone. It killed them anyway---it was discovered the flu came in on their mail.

by Anonymousreply 519March 22, 2020 12:18 PM

R449 Why do you think they had to introduce ration books during WW2? The supply chain was affected certainly, but in the main it was to stop people stock piling. The UK government had to introduce anti-hoarding legislation in 1940. People have always behaved the same in a crisis, some are panicky and self-obsessed, others think of the greater good and are incredibly brave and resourceful. We're seeing that now too. To hold up the WW2 generation as somehow being better than us is a common myth, but a myth nonetheless.

CNN-Illinois governor says states are competing against each other for coronavirus supplies

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker complained that states are competing against each other for key supplies and there needs to be more federal coordination on these goods, he said in an interview with on CNN's “State of the Union” Sunday.

As a result, everyone is competing against each other jurisdictions are paying higher prices, Pritzker said.

“We need millions of masks and hundreds of thousands of gowns and gloves and the rest. And unfortunately, we're getting still just a fraction of that. So we're out on the open market, competing for these items that we so badly need and we're succeeding in some ways. but we still need more,” Pritzker said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been in meetings with health and security officials on Sunday morning, as Spaniards prepare for a possible extension of their country's state of emergency.

It comes with the country's death toll from the virus accelerating. The country's health ministry said on Sunday that another 394 had died in just the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities to 1,720.

Emergency hospitals have been set up across the country, while residents have been urged to stay indoors and normally busy streets are deserted.

Almost 25,000 cases have been reported in total, with a drastic spike of 5,000 new cases reported on Saturday.

"Spain is among the most-affected countries in Europe and in the world," Sanchez said on Saturday, adding that the worst is still to come.

In an effort to strengthen Spain's response to the health crisis, Sanchez announced the national production of masks, ventilators and tests. Meanwhile, the government has bought 640,000 reliable ratified fast tests, which will soon be 1 million, and within the next few hours 1.3 million masks will be handed to health personnel and patients, Sanchez said.

by Anonymousreply 579March 22, 2020 3:53 PM

Oh, please.

by Anonymousreply 580March 22, 2020 3:54 PM

A fucking disgrace the federal government tells the states to get their own supplies and now the states are bidding against each and jacking up prices.

by Anonymousreply 581March 22, 2020 3:55 PM

Cuomo made some terrific arguments about their incompetence, without actually calling them on it, which doesn’t allow Trump to pull focus as easily (granted, nothing will stop him.)

But he frames many of the questions for the federal presser - and possibly shapes and focuses the agenda in the West Wing - with his presentations... timing, content, format. He’s good.

I wonder if he’s working the phones with Fauci.

by Anonymousreply 582March 22, 2020 3:58 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if Cuomo is banging that lady sitting next to him...She's on his staff...not sure her name but she keeps fixing her hair etc.

by Anonymousreply 583March 22, 2020 3:58 PM

Oh c'mon. you know the states want all the freedom and shit when it suits them. don't want interference from federal govt...and when shit happens, they don't want to do anything and want federal govt to take over.

Trolldar is so 1999.

by Anonymousreply 585March 22, 2020 4:02 PM

omg r583 yes, I guess some us can read faces and body language without even thinking. I was thinking yesterday that woman looks like she's fucking the Governor. something about her facial expression made me think she really doesn't give a fuck about what he's saying because she knows her job is secure!

[QUOTE] Are You There, Donald? It’s Me, Corona

This made me laugh out loud. Hilarious.

Also, did that Fox News tweet really misspell “stimulus”? They are so fucking dumb.

It’s almost comical to me how much Trump thinks he can play this whole thing out on Twitter like it’s any of his usual foes or dramas. It’s already not working and no amount of exclamation points are going to help. His sock puppet fangirls don’t even seem as enthused to defend him as they usually do.

This is really an Emperor Has No Clothes moment for him. Finally.

I honestly don’t think he knows how to do anything else. This is really showing his intelligence is limited.
