"Some again, the most sound, perhaps, in judgment, as they we also the most harsh in temper, of all, affirmed that there was no medicine for the disease superior or equal in efficacy to flight; following which prescription a multitude of men and women, negligent of all but themselves, deserted their city, their houses, their estate, their kinsfolk, their goods, and went into voluntary exile, or migrated to the country parts..." -- Giovanni Boccaccio

Olympic Committee board member calls for postponement of Tokyo games From CNN’s Aleks Klosok in London and Yoko Wakatsuki in Tokyo
Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) board member Kaori Yamaguchi has called for the Tokyo Olympics to be postponed because athletes are unable to prepare adequately as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, she told the Nikkei newspaper.
Yamaguchi, who won a Judo bronze medal at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988, said she plans to raise this point at a JOC Board Meeting scheduled for March 27.
"The Olympics should not be held in a situation people in the world can’t enjoy," Yamaguchi said.
"As far as I can tell, athletes in the United States and Europe are unable to train as normal and finish their qualifying matches. That makes it impossible for them to appear well prepared at the start, with all the associated risks," Yamaguchi said.
Some context: Yamaguchi’s comments come after International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Hayley Wickenheiser on Tuesday called the decision to proceed with the Games “insensitive and irresponsible.”
Wickenheiser, who competed for Canada in five Winter Olympic Games in Ice Hockey and at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Softball, wrote in a statement on Twitter: “This crisis is bigger than even the Olympics […] Athletes can't train. Attendees can't travel plan.”
The IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organizers have repeatedly insisted that the games will run as scheduled in Japan’s capital from July 24 to Aug. 9.

A drug developed over half a century ago to treat malaria is showing signs that it may also help cure COVID-19 — especially when combined with an antibiotic, a promising new study reveals.
Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil — and also used to treat arthritis and other ailments — was determined to be effective in killing the deadly bug in laboratory experiments, Forbes reported, citing findings published March 9 in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal.
“(W)e predict that the drug has a good potential to combat the disease,” the study’s authors, most from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan, wrote in a letter published in Cell Discovery on Wednesday, according to the report.
Now, French physician-researchers have completed a largely successful clinical trial using the drug — approved for use in the US in 1955 — to treat confirmed COVID-19 patients, according to a study published Wednesday.
A total of 36 patients — including 20 treated individuals and 16 infected controls — were enrolled in the study, led by Didier Raoult, an infectious disease expert from l’Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire in Marseille.
The treated group was given 600 mg of Plaquenil each day.
The researchers found that 50 percent of the treated group turned from positive to negative for the virus by the third day — and by day six, that figure was up to 70 percent.
Of the 20 test patients, six who were treated with both Plaquenil and the antibiotic azithromycin showed impressive results — with five testing negative at day three. All six of them tested negative at day six.
“Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin,” the study concluded.
Meanwhile, researchers found that a pill containing two HIV drugs touted as a potential treatment for COVID-19 was not effective.
A test of Chinese patients with a severe case of the novel coronavirus found that the 99 who received AbbVie Inc.’s Kaletra, a cocktail of lopinavir and ritonavir, did not do any better than the 100 who received standard care.

Domino's wants to hire 10,000 employees as eating habits shift during coronavirus pandemic From CNN’s Jordan Valinsky
Domino's Pizza is looking to hire up to 10,000 workers as people shift their eating habits to takeout or delivery amid restrictions surrounding the growing coronavirus pandemic.
The pizza chain is looking to hire for several positions in its stores and factories, including chefs, customer service representatives and managers.
"Our corporate and franchise stores want to make sure they're not only feeding people, but also providing opportunity to those looking for work at this time, especially those in the heavily impacted restaurant industry," CEO Richard Allison said in a press release.
Domino's (DPZ) stock is one of the few bright spots in the volatile stock market. Shares are up 10% Thursday and have climbed more than 7% this year.

Amid a citywide ban of more than 50 people gathering in more than one spot due to the coronavirus, video emerged of authorities dispersing a large Jewish prayer group outside the shuttered Chabad Lubavitch headquarters in Brooklyn.
A patrol car from the Sheriff’s Office, the Big Apple’s chief civil enforcement agency, is seen outside the building in Crown Heights late Wednesday, according to Storyful.
“Those who do not disperse are subject to arrest,” an officer is heard saying in the video posted by The Belaaz, a Jewish media outlet.
The headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway closed Tuesday night for the first time ever, according to the Times of Israel, which cited a report in the Orthodox news outlet COLive.com.
But after the closure, dozens of men congregated at the site Wednesday to conduct prayers outside, according to ProPublica.

“Those are the people that normally pray indoors,” a woman walking by told ProPublica. “I think it’s too close — don’t cough on me.”
“Local rabbis have urged people to stay home,” Rabbi Motti Seligson, a Chabad rep, told the news site.
“Sometimes you have some who don’t appreciate the severity of what this virus could do. Leaders in the community are trying really hard to ensure everyone stays safe,” he added.
The video emerged as a cluster of positive cases has been confirmed among Orthodox Jewish communities in Borough Park and Williamsburgh, leading their Satmar rebbe to issue an edict to close all religious buildings.
On Tuesday, two videos showed members of the Orthodox Jewish and Hasidic communities openly defying social distancing orders by hosting crowded weddings.

Chinese coronavirus experts warn northern Italy's lockdown measures are not enough
The coronavirus measures in place in the hard hit Lombardy region of northern Italy are “not strict enough,” according to Chinese medical experts helping the country deal with the crisis.
The situation in Lombardy right now "is similar to what we experienced two months ago in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of COVID-19," the Chinese Red Cross vice president, Sun Shuopeng, said Thursday in a press conference in Milan, Italy. "In the city of Wuhan after one month since the adoption of the lockdown policy, we see a decreasing trend from the peak of the disease," Sun Shuopeng said. "Here in Milan, the hardest hit area by COVID-19, there isn't a very strict lockdown: public transportation is still working and people are still moving around, you're still having dinners and parties in the hotels and you're not wearing masks. We need every citizen to be involved in the fight of COVID-19 and follow this policy.”
He advised Italians to stop all “economic activities and cut the mobility of people.”
Everyone should just stay at home, he added.

I have been talking about what is coming for more than ten years. The people in our church are ready for this. Therefore, nothing of what is happening now is a surprise to me. Every god of America has fallen - sports have fallen, Hollywood has fallen, television shows canceled. Even the god of some mega churches fell, these churches are empty today. I have warned for years that churches will disappear in one night.
I hold in my hands the Rockefeller organization document, which was published in 2010. Here is the script that we met today. What is happening now is not an accident; everything was planned. Bill Gates talked about the pandemic four years ago. The document is called “Scenario for Future Technology and International Development,” 53 pages. It says here that the result of this scenario will be: “20 percent of the world's population will be infected. People’s mobility will be blocked, airports will be closed. Sports events will be canceled, shops closed, theaters closed, churches astounded. A pandemic will produce shortages, including disinfectants and toilet paper. If people refuse the vaccine, they will not be allowed to travel. Political assemblies will be illegal, public protests will be banned. Martial law will be introduced and the new global control system will come into effect. People around the world will be open to sharing their security rights. ”
The plan was to use a pandemic to control the planet. Not just a virus is enough for this; fear is enough for this. This week I talked with different people from about thirty countries, with pastors of thousands of churches, and none of them know a single person infected with coronavirus. I do not say that he does not exist, I say that he is a weapon to control people with fear. Media is part of the whole process because they are designed to instill fear 24/7 on people.
Coronavirus has been in America since last year. I saw a request from the Center for Disease Control about hiring people in quarantined medical facilities in 19 major US cities. The request was made in November 2019. This is all fraud and a means of control by which they want to reduce the population.
What is written in the book of Revelation is printed. Globalists lead us to a single government, a single monetary system and the coming of antichrist. And I believe that God raised Trump to suspend it.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 19, 2020 6:35 PM |
There are three possible scenarios. The first is the beginning of the last days according to the book of Revelation. But I am inclined to believe that this is a great test. Second, the World Health Organization will try to promote the globalist plan and force everyone to make a fake vaccine. The vaccine is already there. And they will kill a lot of people with their vaccine (just like people die from a flu vaccine), because the goal of the vaccine is to reduce the world's population. And the third scenario, which I am inclined to, is that God will overturn all this on the heads of globalists, using President Trump, and will close it all over the next month. And all that they planned will come to zero. This is what we will pray for - that God will drive the wheels out of the chariots of the pharaoh. Within a week or two, I will find out if the third scenario is accurate, and I'll let you know.
At the moment, I do not advise people to fly to other countries, because changes may happen in the next couple of weeks. I encourage everyone to stock up on water and food until the end of April. And I will be storing food for our church, because I have to take care of the church. I want you to know that the church is for you, and here you can feel protected. I don’t know how crazy the next two to three weeks will be, but you don’t get crazy. Stay strong in the Lord, remembering that He will never leave you. There is peace in my heart. At the heart of my assistant Eric is peace. This is the time when we will see cities and nations shocked by the glory of God. This is harvest time. This is not a time of religion and playing a warm church, it is a time of radicals - such as Elisha, Elijah, Paul ... And this is also the time when you take away the wealth of this world. This is the time of the transfer of wealth into the hands of God's children.
I forbid all fear in your lives! Stop listening to lying media! You can choose to listen to the media and scamper in fear, like hens that have their heads chopped off, or stand on God's word that will keep its people at this time. When doctors say that they cannot do anything, when bankers say that they cannot do anything, when heads of administrations say that they cannot do anything, God comes to the very middle of the impossible!

And here is what an Ivy League professor says about the safety of ordering takeout:
First, some good news: It’s hard to get the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus through an order of chicken and broccoli. “The risk of contracting coronavirus through food has been, and is, extremely small,” says Martin Wiedmann, a professor of food safety in the Department of Food Science at Cornell University.
But what about all the hand contact involved in delivery? Passing off tips, toting food through vehicles, all those containers? “Personally, I won’t make any changes with how I receive food. If I order a pizza, I’m not going to leave the pizza box outside and bring the pizza in with my hands,” says Wiedmann. “Am I going to wash my hands before I eat pizza with my hands? Yes.”

The first case was reported in our city a few days ago. Today, they're telling us that was mishandled. Was done in a doctor's office, doctor was not wearing protective gear, and never informed the Dept. Of Health. The infected letter the doctor's office, and freely roamed around the city claiming that no one informed her that she should quarantine herself. She's not being identified, of course, so there's no way for people who had contact with her to know what they're facing.
WTF .... She wants us to believe that she wasn't aware of the required quarantine? She's screwed the entire city. How many more of these scenarios are occuring everyday?

R83, I thought that was debunked, and, in any event, many of the cases in the U.S. came from people returning from Italy and Iran.

Not to mention people in developing countries who are constantly at risk of catching all kinds of exotic diseases, dealing with corrupt dictators, civil wars, etc. Honestly, as horrible as this is turning out to be, it's also a wakeup call that shows that we are all fundamentally equal as humans, and nobody is guaranteed anything in life. A virus does not give a damn if you are a wealthy celebrity, politician, or head of state.

Of course, Trump lied when he said the FDA has approved the drug chloroquine to treat coronavirus. It's like when he said Google was creating a national testing website. He'll say anything to build false hope, and when the shit hits the fan, he'll blame Google, the FDA, and everybody but himself.
From R66's link:
[quote] “It has shown very, very encouraging early results, and we’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately,” Trump said, “and that is where the FDA has been so great. It’s gone through the approval process. It’s been approved. They took it down from many months to immediate.”
[quote] But, in fact, the drug has not been approved by the FDA for the novel coronavirus. It has long been approved to prevent and treat malaria as well as to treat arthritis, and doctors have authority to prescribe it now, but there is not enough evidence of definite efficacy against the coronavirus.

I can't believe how many people are so concerned about carry out foods. There's a whole world of frozen, canned, and packaged foods that you just pop into an oven, a microwave, or on the stovetop.
How do you know what goes on in the kitchens where your food is prepared? People who are there to make money, many of whom are late teens, to early twenties, don't particularly care about cleanliness and safety. And how old is the food that's not being used quickly as when the restaurant was fully open for business?
It time to learn how to cook, or at least heat something up. Be smart, save some money, and save your life.

This $1000 per person payment is just a band-aid. You can stop the rent, house payment, car payment, etc, but people need money for food and other items. I'm sure unemployment couldn't even cover rent in some places. Remember too apartment complexes have bills they have to pay. They have water bills, electrical, maintenance, etc. If this went on for months you would have to suspend payments to just about everything. Or here is your choice, food or a roof over your head. This is like chasing after your tail. Every little tweak affects another sector and you go to tweak that and then move onto the next one. That is unsustainable.

[quote]This type of order is an early signal to military units to be ready to deploy, although final orders could still change. The units would be sent to still-to-be determined areas where additional medical beds are needed to treat non-infectious patients, so civilian hospitals can focus on those with coronavirus.
[quote]The units receiving the orders are the 47th Combat Support Hospital based at Joint-Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state which has seen a significant virus outbreak, and the 586th Field Hospital at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. [quote] After four days of raging fever and feeling sore all over, you realize that you’re sicker than you’ve ever been in your life. You’ve got a dry cough that shakes you so hard that your back hurts. Fighting for breath, you order an Uber and head to the nearest emergency room. (You leave 376,345,090 virus particles smeared on various surfaces of the car and another 323,443,865 floating in aerosols in the air.)
[quote] At the ER, you’re examined and sent to an isolation ward. As doctors wait for the results of a test for the coronavirus, they administer a CT scan of your lungs, which reveals tell-tale “ground-glass opacities,” fuzzy spots caused by fluid accumulating where the immune-system battle is the most intense. Not only have you got COVID-19, but it’s led to a kind of intense and dangerous pneumonia called acute-respiratory-distress syndrome, or ARDS.
. . .
[quote] You’re crashing. Your immune system has flung itself into a “cytokine storm” — an overdrive of such intensity that it is no longer fighting just the viral infection but the body’s own cells as well. White blood cells storm your lungs, destroying tissue. Fluid fills the tiny alveolar sacs that normally let the blood absorb oxygen. Effectively, you’re drowning, even with the ventilator pumping oxygen-enriched air into your lungs.

Maybe what we need is a national lockdown like they did in China. Not halfway measures like they’re doing in Italy where buses are still running and people are still congregating, and the infection is lingering to an extent that hospitals and health care in general is overwhelmed on an ongoing basis.
In China they locked millions of people DOWN. No one left their house except to buy food and that only on designated days. They had the military enforcing it with roadblocks and checkpoints. Draconian but that’s what it takes to shut the virus down. Doing it halfway like Italy (and here,) ASKING people to please cooperate, does not work. Because people are assholes.

R159 I guess ask China how they did it. Maybe the military transported people to get food or brought food to people. It’s not working in Italy where the epidemic is dragging on keeping the country paralyzed (longer than it was in China) without no letup.

Mother has cancer and want to get scan today before she can start treatment for growing tumors.. Because of a temp of 99, she was not allowed to get scan - for fear of virus. BUT she could NOT get a test because she didn’t meet the requirements of testing - which include coughing. This is dangerously incompetent. People are being prevented from getting cancer treatment because hospitals are too afraid to touch people with a fever - and there is no testing capacity! Someone has to do something. I hated Trump already - I can’t hate anymore. Feeling defeated and hopeless - and angry at myself for not being able to fix this.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | March 20, 2020 12:42 AM |
R159 beat me to it - Like people in China did not use public transportation to get to grocery stores and hospitals. They made it work! They also made the doctors sleep near the hospitals away from their families/homes so that they would not risk spreading the virus after work (and no need to commute). A total shutdown and martial law to enforce it are inevitable. Watch.
Also, in Italy, the number of cases in Rome are low because hard hit parts of Northern Italy are shutdown and they are not traveling south.

Also, once you look at the deaths vs. infections you have to consider that less than 20% are serious. It is scary to hear younger people dying but they're the outliers. Italy has an aging population with tight living quarters and extended families. In Italy it isn't unusual for the young to actually interact regularly with extended family. It is adorable and foreign to us in the US but in this case probably deadly.
The treatment news is also good. Let's not get too hysterical it does no one any good.

Reuters: California governor issues statewide 'stay at home' order over coronavirus

Governor Gavin Newsom said that modeling has shown that 56 percent of California residents were expected to contract COVID-19 over the next eight weeks, requiring nearly 20,000 more hospital beds than the state could currently provide.

This was probably already brought up in these threads, but what's the situation with the Anti-Malaria (Chloroquine) drug and Anti-HIV drug? IIRC, Australian officials, US officials and even Elon Musk are claiming those drugs can be used as a cure for Covid-19.
Australian doctors apparently first found out about this through Chinese patients in Australia who asked for Chloroquine pills (because the Chinese patients read that Chloroquine was already used successfully in some other unnamed countries).
How effective is Chloroquine? And what about the anti-HIV drug - can that be used too?

Sounds like people are overacting. I am not downplaying the coronavirus. Remember you have to come in contact with someone that is infected and at that they need to have coughed or sneezed by you. If you stay 6 feet from people you should be fine. I'm in the group that is vulnerable and was worried for awhile. It doesn't mean I am going to do risky behavior, but when out in public I will make sure there is a distance between me and other people.

[quote] Coronavirus in Italy: Health care workers stop counting bodies
[quote]Italy’s death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed China, with so many dead that soldiers were brought in to haul away coffins and health care workers said they stopped counting bodies.
[quote] An army spokesman said 15 trucks and 50 soldiers had to be deployed to remove the dead from Bergamo, northeast of Milan, because the town cemetery had been overwhelmed. Officials also sought help with cremations after the local crematorium was unable to keep up.
This was already elsewhere, but still:
[quote] Italy remains in lockdown, and government leaders say they are considering even stricter measures to keep residents indoors to try to stem the spread of virus. Police throughout the European nation said they stopped more than 1.2 million Italians and cited about 51,000 for violating the lockdown regulations over the past week alone.

Yes, R200, that would be in line with the suggestion that we’re a few weeks behind Italy. I’ve heard a few of the doctors and scientists warn that we should be prepared for a sharp increase in critical cases and deaths in the next few weeks.
California’s lockdown is likely going to have to be implemented In some way country-wide in order for us to have a chance of somewhat containing this virus.
We are not ready for what’s about to hit. Having that simpering orange baboon ostensibly in charge inspires nothing but fear and dread.

[quote] we do not know if any of these drugs are effective.
But they already reported some success on test cases, R206. E.g. Australians reported drastic improvement in test-patients who were given those pills:
[quote] China has found that Chloroquine is effective against COVID-19, the state-owned Xinhua news agency reported on February 17. Countries including China, South Korea, and Belgium have added Chloroquine to their treatment guidelines.
[quote] In the past month, the UK has added both Chloroquine and HydroxyChloroquine to a list of drugs that drug wholesalers cannot export because UK patients need them and exporting them may lead to a shortage in the UK.
[quote] Andrea Savarino is an Italian scientist who has worked at the Italian National Institute of Health, the country's top medical research body, since 2006. He has been studying Chloroquine and its potential uses for even longer than that, starting as a virologist in 1994. During the 2003 outbreak of SARS — also a coronavirus — Savarino showed in laboratory research that Chloroquine may be a useful weapon against it. But by the time his research was published in The Lancet in November 2003, the outbreak had dissipated and there were no human cases available to test.
[quote] In Australia, researchers at the University of Queensland have said a combination of Chloroquine and Kaletra (the anti-HIV drug) led to the recovery of some of the first COVID-19 patients in Australia.
[quote] [In the US] prescriptions for Chloroquine have surged, according to recent tracking data from IQVIA cited by Raymond James. For the weeks of February 21, February 28, and March 6, weekly prescriptions grew from 531 to 957 to 1,290."

What I’m puzzled about is: why do companies not have any emergency cash in hand to deal with such downswings? They’ve had many years of a roaring economy to prepare for a crunch. I know this is particularly hard on certain businesses and a “normal” economic bump would not have the same immediate impact but still...lots of companies seem to have their hands out begging for money already.

That is what I observed in a cursory observation Before I could get my question out the manager said he doesn't know when they will get toilet paper. BTW, that wasn't my question. He mentioned the national guard might be helping them. So far my store (Fry's) doesn't have a special day or time for seniors. Was told by the manager corporate is working on it. I used self serve and the clerk needed to void an error code. She wouldn't touch the screen and told me which prompt I needed to touch. She looked extremely nervous being there.

CNN-American Heart Association offers advice for heart attack and stroke survivors amid pandemic
During the current coronavirus pandemic, it is "more important than ever" for heart attack and stroke survivors to reduce the risk of another event and "avoid busy hospitals," the American Heart Association said in a statement Friday.
"Based on current information, it appears elderly people with coronary heart disease or hypertension are more likely to be infected and to develop more severe symptoms. Stroke survivors may face increased risk for complications if they get Covid-19," the statement said.
The AHA noted that after a heart attack or stroke, as many as 1 in 4 survivors will have another one. To prevent a heart attack or stroke, the AHA offered these tips:
Take your medications as prescribed
Manage your risk factors by quitting smoking, eating healthy, staying active
Keep any follow-up appointments with your doctor and see if virtual visits are possible
Participate in a cardiac rehab program virtually
Get support from loved ones as needed when you feel overwhelmed, scared or confused

These are the rules for the most vulnerable groups
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo laid out a series of rules all New Yorkers in the most vulnerable groups should follow in order to protect themselves from coronavirus.
This group includes seniors, those with compromised immune systems and people with underlying illnesses.
Here are the rules:
Remain indoors
Can go outside for solitary exercise
Pre-screen all visitors and aides by taking their temperature
Do not visit households with multiple people
All vulnerable persons should wear a mask when in he company of others
To the greatest extent possible, everyone in the presence of vulnerable people should wear a mask
Always stay at least six feet away from individuals
Do not take public transportation unless urgent and absolutely necessary

[quote] Apparently if you make over $75,000 as an individual, you won't get the paltry $1000/$1200 relief check. Which is bullshit.
If you make over $75,000 and are single, the benefit is phased out, up to $99,000 over which you would get nothing.
[quote] Under the plan, individuals making up to $75,000 annually would be eligible for $1,200. Married couples who file their taxes jointly and earn less than $150,000 would receive $2,400. Individuals who earn more than $75,000 would receive $5 less for every $100 they earn; payments to married couples earning more than $150,000 would be lowered proportionally.
[quote] Individuals earning more than $99,000 or couples making more than $198,000 would not receive any money.
This is just a proposed plan. IT HASN'T PASSED YET.

Coca Cola is also a wonder drug when you're sick. It eases the nausea and keeps your blood sugar from dropping too low if you unable to eat or keep food down. Drink whatever appeals to you as long as your getting liquids into your system.

CNN-Italian males are dying faster than females from coronavirus, US health expert says
Deborah Birx, a physician and public health expert, spoke Friday about some of the "concerning" trends she is seeing across the globe during the coronavirus pandemic.
Birx specifically discussed Italy, where the number of deaths related to coronavirus has surpassed China.
"We continue to review the data and we continue to see signs that individuals under 20, 19 and under, may have severe disease but majority have all recovered to date. We still see the same trend and frankly from Italy we are seeing another concerning trend that the mortality in males seems to be twice in every age group of females. This should alert all of us to continue our vigilance to protect our Americans that are in nursing homes," Birx said.
More on Italy and China: The number of deaths in Italy reached 3,405 on Thursday, the Italian Civil Protection Agency said at a news conference — 156 more than China's toll, which, according to Johns Hopkins University, stands at 3,249.
The total number of cases in Italy rose to 41,035 with 5,322 new cases, officials added.
The grim figure comes hours after China marked a major milestone in the battle to limit the spread, reporting no new locally transmitted coronavirus cases for the first time since the pandemic began.

[Quote] I think red states will be hit harder, despite the present situation.
I have to agree and disagree, given that some cities in blue states have multiple times the population of entire red states. Except Texas, their situation will be complicated because they have huge cities and the state is huge. I expect Texas to mirror what California does; however, I agree with you that Texas' governor may not handle the situation the same way. But at the same time, Texas has fewer cases than states half its size.
We won't know how this exactly will play out until a couple of weeks. Hopefully, we have all overly exaggerated, and we'll be okay.

CNN-British pubs and restaurants asked to close due to coronavirus
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson instructed cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants to close on Friday "as soon as they reasonably can and not to open tomorrow,” in order to stem the tide of the coronavirus.
The closure also applies to “nightclubs, gyms, cinemas and leisure centers,” he added during his daily press conference.
Johnson said the measures will be reviewed each month to see if can be relaxed. “Some people may be tempted to go out and I say please don’t.” He said he was confident the "tide can be turned" but people need to stay away from one another.
It was not immediately clear if the Prime Minister’s instruction was backed by legal force.

They are giving people who break their quarantines huge fines, we're talking thousands. They are forbidding people to quarantine in their cabins, as most cabins are in small villages that can't handle the number of potential sick people. Based on current trend, Brazil expects rapid increases between April- July.
Guardian-Brazil’s universal health system will soon be overloaded by Covid-19 pressure, the country’s health minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, has warned.
“Clearly by the end of April our health system will begin to collapse,” he said during a teleconference with members of Brazil’s business elite, wearing a mask and sitting next to President Jair Bolsonaro. “Collapse is when there is money, health plans, but no room in the hospitals,” he added, making comparisons with Italy; which recently overtook China’s Covid-19 deaths.
Brazil so far has so far recorded 612 cases and eight deaths.
According to the minister, the number of cases will begin to climb rapidly in April and continue through May, June and July before levelling out in August and falling in September.

"One of the things we are learning is that although older people are the hardest hit, younger people are not spared," Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters in Geneva.
"Data from many countries clearly shows that people under 50 make up a significant proportion of patients requiring hospitalisation.
"Today, I have a message for young people: you are not invincible. This virus could put you in hospital for weeks, or even kill you"

This is why it’s still out of control in Italy as opposed to over in China—too little too late:
[quote]Some politicians in Italy’s northern provinces have pressed for even harsher measures. They want narrower hours for supermarkets, a wider closure of factories and a mass-scale military deployment to keep people off the streets. Several leaders in the north have turned their ire toward people who continue to exercise outdoors, and have called on Conte to place a ban on jogging.
[quote]In an interview, the vice governor of the Lombardy region, Fabrizio Sala, said anonymized data provided by telecommunications companies indicated that 60 percent of all movement in the region had stopped, compared to a normal period before the virus. But even so, he said, too many people were leaving the house.
[quote] Polls indicate that the lockdown has wide support, and many of the Italians leaving their homes are doing so for essential work. Still, tens of thousands have been cited by police for breaking the lockdown rules.
[quote]In recognition of the limits on how democracies can contend with the virus, Italy has not used some of the more heavy-handed or invasive tools used successfully by China — including sustained monitoring outside apartment complexes and apps that log location and body temperature.
China did it right. Millions of people not allowed out of their homes except to buy food or medicine. Factories shut down, not just businesses. No public transport. Roadblocks and checkpoints enforced by the military. Italy’s public transport and factories are still running and as noted, thousands are ignoring the ‘voluntary’ quarantines. ‘Voluntary’ does not work.
[quote]Italy’s biggest mistake, virologists say, was not instituting the nationwide lockdown more swiftly. It is unclear if such a move, made weeks earlier, would have been as widely accepted — because the horrors of the virus had not yet come fully into view. Still, by the time Conte formally made his decree on March 10, the virus’s explosive growth had been set in motion.
Too little too late. Just like what we’re doing here (and in the UK.)

A 57-year-old partner at a New York- and New Jersey-based law firm has died of complications from the coronavirus – two days after he wrote in an email that he was improving, according to a report.
Richard Weber Jr., a Manhattan-based partner at Gallo Vitucci Klar, died Wednesday, according to Law.com, which cited the LGBT Bar Association of New York, or LeGal, of which Weber was a board member.
“He was just a wonderful human being with a real dedication to giving back to others,” LeGal executive director Eric Lesh said.
“We urge our members and friends to stay safe and healthy. Protect yourselves, friends and family. We are all in this together. We will continue to pursue equality and justice with Richard’s memory and generous spirit in our hearts,” Lesh and LeGal board president Kristen Prata Browde told the group’s members in a statement.
Weber’s death came two days after he wrote in an email that he had tested positive and was hospitalized, but doing better.
“Everyone at Gallo Vitucci Klar LLP is heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Richard,” the 80-lawyer firm said in a statement. “He was a wonderful attorney and shining light at our firm. Our thoughts right now are with his family.”
Gallo Vitucci said its Manhattan office has been closed since Weber disclosed his symptoms on March 10. The lawyers and staff have been working remotely.
“Fortunately, no one else at that office or the firm has had any COVID-19 symptoms or a positive diagnosis,” the company said.

R488, people really are working hard to develop treatments and vaccines. No one is goofing off. Days, nights, and weekends are all being spent on this.
But as the saying goes, you can't make a baby in a month by getting nine women pregnant. Determining whether a vaccine is effective and safe takes time, and there's no getting around that. Imagine if everyone got a vaccine, and.millions dropped dead from it. It would make COVID-19 look like a walk in the park by comparison.

Agree R514. They have to do exhaustive testing on any potential vaccine. Plus, because this is a novel virus, we have no natural immunity to it, so everyone is going to need it. What if the negative side-effects don’t show up until the twelfth month? And we rushed it into production after four months. That would be a disaster.

by Anonymous | reply 522 | March 21, 2020 1:49 AM |
NY is such a disaster because the east coast got the virus strain directly from Italy, which seems to be even more virulent than the one in Wuhan, which is now contained within China and no longer a factor anymore. The more hosts this virus infects the stronger it gets. It's like a selection pressure on the virus for ever greater infectiousness. That's why herd immunity doesn't work. The virus won't stop until it has grown strong enough to off most of the herd.

[quote] What if the negative side-effects don’t show up until the twelfth month? And we rushed it into production after four months. That would be a disaster.
That's probably what will happen. Trump will pressure them to rush a vaccine to market (before the November election, so that he can look like a hero), and then we'll find out months later that it has horrible side effects and causes irreversible damage.

We have a few things going for us - we're already more accustomed to less social interaction and more apt to communicate via phone and other networks. Long shipping distances means traces of the virus on packages and goods may be weaker or dead by the time of arrival. And we're much more spread out outside of the larger cities. I live in a small rural village, and while shopping poses a risk, my day-to-day round does not if I avoid the post office. And while I've always loved my little town, it's not a tourist destination or a commuter bedroom.

Almost everything besides grocery stores is already closed in my city. The UK just ordered that all restaurants and pubs must close. A lot, if not most, will be bankrupt in 2-3 months. Will they reopen? Will the employees come back or have a lot of them already moved to live with parents or family or found new employment? Is our money or retirement funds safe or will the whole banking system and social security collapse? Will there be hordes of homeless people on the streets who lost their homes due to unemployment or bankruptcy? Will people still have money to buy new cars, new iPhones or go on vacations in the next couple of years? Such strange times.
