CNN-Hong Kong reports largest increase in cases after period of slowdown, raising fears of a second wave

Hong Kong reported its largest increase in new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, after a period of apparent slowdown in infections.

For most of March, few, if any, cases were reported every day. Today, there were 14 new cases -- all of which except one had recent international travel history.

This brings the city's total to 182 cases.

Wong Ka-hing, of Hong Kong’s Center for Health Protection, warned today that a huge volume of travelers is expected to arrive in Hong Kong in the coming days, especially as students abroad arrive home after university closures.

This has raised alarm that there may be a second wave of infections, with travelers abroad potentially bringing back many new infections and forming new clusters.

Starting Thursday, all international arrivals will be required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

One of the things I find kind of darkly amusing is that despite Trump and his band of sycophants changing their tune, they've seemingly lost control of the rest of the cult, who still seem to be fixated on owning the libs.

The only reason this "cult" ever supported Trump is because he fed this fixation. "Owning" libs is truly their only reason for anything in life.

R33 The good news is by then we will most likely have a vaccine. They just started vaccine trials and it usually takes about a year from trials to it's avilable for the public.

by Anonymousreply 38March 18, 2020 1:31 PM

Yeah, does that 18 month scenario factor in effective treatment or a vaccine? Vaccine I don't count on, for speed, but I do believe it is reasonable and likely an effective treatment can be identified. Less starting from scratch on that front. Yesterday I linked to an article on this site (from the Daily Mail but quoting a credible and acknowledged cancer treatment specialist) who say there were almost 70 drugs and combinations of drugs in review as treatment right now. That is encouraging news by any measure.

by Anonymousreply 39March 18, 2020 1:43 PM

I agree R39 it is just a matter of producing those drugs...they also don't know how much of a dosage to administer. Some dosage levels could have bad side effects.

Idris Elba believes he got coronavirus on the day he hugged Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s infected wife.

“I know I’ve been exposed to it from March 4,” the 47-year-old “Luther” star said — the same date he was photographed with Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, 44, at a packed charity event in London, alongside F1 star Lewis Hamilton.

“That’s when the person that came up positive, that was the time I got in contact with that person,” he said in a video update, again stressing that his “known exposure was March 4.”

Without naming the person, he revealed that he got tested after hearing about someone “also in the public eye” being infected.

He said he found out about it Friday — the morning he would have woken up to hear that Canada’s first lady had tested positive.

“On Friday last week I was told that someone that I had been in contact with had tested positive,” he said.

“And I’m on location, about to start a film and the news breaks that this person, who is also in the public eye, had tested positive.

“My job made me test immediately. I had to test because it meant putting a lot of people at risk — if I had been exposed then the people I was working with would also have been exposed,” he said, saying he immediately quarantined himself at home.

“I wasn’t showing any symptoms but I am very glad I made that decision [to get tested] because I have been out of contact with everyone since.”

“The early testing is the way we need to approach this,” he said, highlighting the problems of the procedure proving difficult for many to get it.

Elba said he was “feeling fine” if a little tired — but admitted he feared his asthma put him in the “high category of most at risk.”

“Of course I’m worried,” the star added. “Catching corona was definitely not on my bucket list at all.”

The actor laughed when a fan pointed out his wife, Sabrina Dhowre, 30, coughing in the background of his live video.

Gov. Guomo said he spoke to Orange turd and he's sending NY a floating hospital called "comfort"

by Anonymousreply 53March 18, 2020 3:34 PM

I have had just about as much as I can handle at the moment. Aye Papi on CNN this morning is driving me crazy. I need to self isolate and decompress. I’m going to go into my bedroom, lock the door, pull the shades, and pull out my phone and find me some classic Sean Cody with Stu (wasn’t he just the best) or Calvin or Curtis. Then I am going to forget about the rest of the world and just concentrate on rubbing one out and having one enormous jizz fest. Talk to y’all later.

NY Cuomo- 1339 cases in NYC. 6,194 tested in NYC.

Cuomo really sticking it to Trump and showing he's in charge and leading. Facts, transparency and not trying to overreact. He showed and explained a ventilator right now.

Should have run for president.

by Anonymousreply 58March 18, 2020 3:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 75March 18, 2020 4:20 PM

I wish he wouldn't call it the 'Chinese' virus. It's childish and petty. The so-called Spanish flu which took out millions in 1918 is actually believed to have originated in an army camp in Kansas. Should we rechristen it the American virus? Of course not. He needs to stop with the idiocy and self congratulatory nonsense and show some genuine leadership. He won't though, as he's incapable of that, as it becoming more obvious every day.

by Anonymousreply 87March 18, 2020 4:39 PM

R80. As his first two options (denial, blame Obama) didn't work, he's moving to option 3: Blame China. Just days ago, he was complimenting China about the wonderful job they have done to contain the virus etc., etc., and now he is dragging them through the mud. He is so utterly predictable and desperate to save his ass. He is the ULTIMATE master of BULLSHIT. Maybe the best ever. Unfortunately millions of Americans are too dim to see through this or choose to look the other way out of their own personal interests.

CNN-Italian official warns "soon" they won't be able to assist those who get sick

Gov. Attilio Fontana of Lombardy, Italy, made another appeal to the people: "You must not go out, you have to stay at home."

"Unfortunately the numbers of the contagion are not decreasing, they continue to be high. Soon we will not be able to give an answer to those who get sick," the governor said.

Fontana then made a plea to Lombardy citizens.

"We are asking you to make a sacrifice in order to save lives. Every time you leave home it's s a risk for you and others," said Fontana, adding that if people continue not to comply with the restriction he will ask the government to implement "even stricter measures," the governor said.

by Anonymousreply 94March 18, 2020 4:44 PM

Japanese don't hug and kiss each other in greeting. They don't even touch. As a society, they are also much more inclined to follow instructions for the public good. This is particularly true for health care. Their seniors are also in better health than many other countries.

by Anonymousreply 95March 18, 2020 4:48 PM

Found out today that a friend of a friend has had Covid-19. He went on holiday to Northern Italy and came back with it (UK). He has recovered now but said it was an incredibly tough two weeks. It started with a fever and cough so violent he couldn't sleep and got a banging headache. There were peaks and troughs, i.e. days where he thought he was over it and then it would come back just as bad. Most alarmingly, he said there were times when he felt like he was drowning - I guess that's the shortness of breath. It sounds horrible - however, I must stress he is now recovered, didn't need to go to hospital AND, hopefully now has some immunity - fingers crossed.

Why are people clutching their pearls over blaming China? This entire situation is their fault. Their disgusting laws allow their people to kill wild animals in public and eat them in unsanitary ways. They hid the virus from the world for months even going as far as destroying the virus in labs. Finally a whistleblower came out to let us know how bad it was and they were immediately killed. More on China’s attempted coverup in the early days of the pandemic (from the UK Times, the rest of the article is behind a paywall)

[quote]Chinese laboratories identified a mystery virus as a highly infectious new pathogen by late December last year, but they were ordered to stop tests, destroy samples and suppress the news, a Chinese media outlet has revealed.

[quote]A regional health official in Wuhan, centre of the outbreak, demanded the destruction of the lab samples that established the cause of unexplained viral pneumonia on January 1. China did not acknowledge there was human-to-human transmission until more than three weeks later.

[quote]The detailed revelations by Caixin Global, a respected independent publication, provide the clearest evidence yet of the scale of the cover-up in the crucial early weeks when the opportunity was lost to control the outbreak.

Same for the situation here in Belgium, people are still being encouraged to take walks, ride bikes, etc., even under the "lockdown". I have a question which I hope the DL collective wisdom can address. I have Crohn's disease and receive Remicade infusions every 8 weeks. I am due for one next Wednesday. I get infused in a quasi-hospital setting, where, I'm sure, a viral spiral swirls around the waiting areas, etc. Since Remicade is an immuno-suppressor and renders me more vulnerable to contracting Covid-19 and to dying from it, I'm wondering if I should just go off Remicade for now and take my chances with Crohn's. I was off Remicade for three years back when I was a mere ingenue of fifty but now I'm a dowager of sixty-two and wondering how I will fare. Naturally, my gastroenterologist is encouraging me to stay on the program but I'm really afraid of the actual infusion process right now. To make matters worse, my nurses's husband does business in China! Anyway, are there any other DL peeps suffering from infusion confusion? Help!

by Anonymousreply 151March 18, 2020 6:13 PM

[quote]How is Italy experiencing new infections when everybody is quarantined?

It can take up to 14 days to develop symptoms and of course family members can all give it to each other one by one, so there is some lag in he way the disease spreads. Add to that the fact that the worst cases can take many weeks to become critical.

I'm guessing that it might be another month before Italy really gets the benefits of the lockdown.

by Anonymousreply 152March 18, 2020 6:15 PM

R151,

Can’t you ask your gastroenterologist to prescribe oral steroids if you’re afraid of going for the infusion? It’s probably more immunosuppressive (and you don’t want to be on steroids long term), but at least you can limit your exposure to COVID-19.

Patron leaves $9,400 tip to pay restaurant staff during coronavirus closure

Even tips are bigger in Texas.

An anonymous Texas diner demonstrated a heart of gold after leaving a $9,400 tip to aid their local eatery amid the coronavirus-caused restaurant closures.

The couple had reportedly arrived at Irma’s Southwest in Houston Monday to catch an early dinner before the county’s restaurants reverted to takeout-only service due to the coronavirus pandemic, CNN reports.

The timing was fortuitous, as “we had to let our staff know that we may be off work for 15 to 30 days,” Irma’s owner, Louis Galvan, tells ABC13.

To help keep them afloat during the shutdown, the unnamed patron decided to leave a whopping $1,900 in cash along with a $7,500 credit card gratuity on a $90.12 bill. They also scrawled a note on the receipt: “Hold tip to pay your guys over the next few weeks.”

Needless to say, the restaurant staff was floored by the tipster’s gracious gesture.

“I don’t even have words for it,” Irma’s assistant manager Janet Montez tells her local ABC outlet, admitting she wasn’t totally surprised because the customers — who are regulars at the joint despite their anonymity — have always been generous people.

“The gift we got today should help soften the blow,” says Galvan, who plans to divide the money among his 30 employees, giving them $300 each.

Despite the impromptu financial aid, the harried owner admits it may be a while before he can pay the staff’s regular wages.

Meanwhile in France

2m ago 18:40

Kim Willsher Kim Willsher The virus is spreading rapidly in France, Prof Jérôme Salomon, director of the French health authority, has said.

Guardian-There are 9,134 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in France, and there have been 264 deaths – an increase of 89 in the last 24 hours. Of those infected, 2,626 are in hospital; 931 of them in intensive care, half of whom are under 60 years old.

by Anonymousreply 165March 18, 2020 6:44 PM

R 151- I have heard varying theories about individuals like yourself who are immuno-compromised and therefore find themselves ( or believe themselves to be at greater risk for CV. One contrarian theory I have heard is that you may actually fare * better* than others, since complicated cases of the virus involve the dreaded Cytokine storm where the body's immune system goes into over-drive and reacts with a heightened inflammatory response, which you on the medications you already take, would not be able to do. That being said, the LAST PLACE you should be coming to for Medical advice is DL and I am no Doctor.

I renovated a house the summer of 2018 and knew the economy must have been booming when the majority of the contractors and sub-contractors I contacted couldn't be bothered to respond. The few who did eventually left me hanging once they found out jobs weren't that big (mostly under $5,000). Two of those companies have contacted me in the last week asking "are you still looking for a contractor" etc. The renovation is long since done and the house sold but, even if it weren't, I wouldn't hire these companies anyway.

Yesterday, St Patrick's Day, was a national holiday here in Ireland. The Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Leo Varadkar, made an emergency broadcast to discuss the crisis and the government's response. Some of his ideas sound interesting, such as the fact that in a few weeks the government will ask elderly and immuno-compromised people to 'cocoon', meaning to stay at home all the time, while the government puts in place a system to make sure they have food and essential supplies. He said that Ireland had the capacity to borrow billions if need be, but it will take years to pay off.

In the same speech Varadkar predicted that there could be 15,000 cases in Ireland by the end of this month. As of today the official figure is 354 for the whole island of Ireland. I appreciate those are confirmed cases, not true cases, and so an undercount, but still the prospect of a jump up to 15,000 in 2 weeks gave me a jolt.

Interesting postscript: Varadkar (also Ireland's first gay Taoiseach) is a former medical doctor himself, his partner is a practicing medical doctor and both of his sisters are practicing health care workers.

by Anonymousreply 179March 18, 2020 7:27 PM

R179 the outgoing Fine Gael government is still there as acting government.

You do raise an interesting point which is that this acting government basically has to co-ordinate this crisis and perhaps borrow those millions, making decisions of huge consequence, without a mandate attained at the recent general election. That might be an argument for a government of national unity, if the two centre-right Civil War parties would only stop insisting on treating Sinn Féin as lepers.

Spain was a neutral country during the war, and had a relatively free press, so the first press reports of the spreading disease were from Spain

Russia still up to its crap to turn the rest of the world into Russia:

The EU says Russian media has deployed a “significant disinformation campaign” against nations in the West in order to compound the impact of the coronavirus. The goal seems to be “to make it harder for the EU to communicate its response to the pandemic,” Reuters reports today, after reviewing the nine-page document.

“A specialist EU database has recorded almost 80 cases of disinformation about coronavirus since Jan. 22,” Reuters writes. Perhaps most notably at this stage of the pandemic, “Russian media in Europe have not been successful in reaching the broader public,” but all of its disinformation efforts “provide a platform for anti-EU populists and polarise debate.”

Russian authorities, of course, deny the allegations.

It's much worse than the government is telling us. It's fucking grim, folks.

The two reports, one from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the other from Imperial College London, were generated separately, but both of them reach similar conclusions: We’ve already waited too long to “flatten the curve” with the kind of actions that have been taken to date. Instead, this is going to be a long, hard fight, requiring some genuinely dire steps. And there may be no end to the threat until a vaccine is widely available—more than a year from now.

CNN - Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said more than 1,000 coronavirus tests are still waiting to be processed because of the state’s backlog.

“We’ve had to freeze 1,700 samples,” Walz said at a news conference Wednesday. “We can’t test them.” The governor said they have put in three requests for additional testing supplies in the past 10 days that have not been fulfilled. Walz said the backlog is hurting their ability to respond to the pandemic.

"It's the data from testing that allows us to model where this is going to go, and then the response is based on that modeling,” Walz said.

Over 99% of coronavirus patients in Italy who died had other health problems

More than 99% of coronavirus patients who died in Italy suffered from other, pre-existing health issues, according to a study by the country’s health officials.

The new research from the National Institutes of Health released Tuesday evaluated 355 of the country’s fatalities and found that only three patients had no prior medical conditions.

Nearly half the COVID-19 victims suffered from at least one of the following conditions: high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease.

More than 75% reported high blood pressure, while 35% had diabetes and 33% had heart disease, according to the study.

The average age of the victims was 79.5, and the number of deaths in the country surpassed 2,500 this week.

Coronavirus cluster in NYC Hasidic community confirmed

A cluster of positive coronavirus cases was confirmed among the Hasidic community in Borough Park on Wednesday as their Satmar Rebbe issued an edict to close all religious buildings, The Post has learned.

A rep for Asisa Urgent Care, which caters predominantly to the Hasidic community, told The Post Wednesday they had “over 150” positive COVID-19 tests come back and the majority of people tested “were from the community.

“More are coming in as we speak,” the rep said.

As of Wednesday at 3 p.m. there were a total of 1,339 cases in the Big Apple, meaning the 150-plus cases in Borough Park account for more than 10% of the positive test results.

The news comes as two videos emerged late Tuesday showing members of the Orthodox Jewish community and the Hasidic community openly defying social distancing orders by hosting crowded, raucous weddings.

New York State Commissioner of Health Howard Zucker said they are “looking into” the possible cluster in Borough Park but staff for Governor Andrew Cuomo declined to say anything further, citing an ongoing investigation.

However, Mayor Bill de Blasio and the city health department denied there was a cluster Wednesday, saying there’s a growing number of cases citywide, not just in Borough Park.

Late Tuesday, the head of the ultra-conservative Satmar Hasidic sect in Williamsburg issued a directive ordering all synagogues and other religious buildings to be closed, according to a copy of the edict posted to Twitter.

The edict said the Jewish community should obey the law and for the next 15 days, all Satmar synagogues, yeshivas and schools will be closed.

New York City’s rapidly rising coronavirus toll more than doubled to 1,871 confirmed cases and an eleventh person has died from the respiratory illness, Mayor de Blasio said Wednesday.

The update came as the mayor and Gov. Cuomo locked horns on a possible shelter-in-place order for the Big Apple. The mayor has voiced support for a measure along the lines of San Francisco’s rule requiring residents to stay at home except for food and emergencies, a move Cuomo has opposed.

There was nothing wrong with the WHO coronavirus tests. The WHO tests were used in South Korea and Hong Kong to great effect and they were able to control the outbreak better than any other countries.

The medical advisor for MSNBC, Dr. Joseph Fair, said the WHO tests worked perfectly and that Trump is lying about them to cover his ass for not buying them when offered. Well, maybe in Catholic US families, but judging from those southern-looking kids, I'd bet that's probably not their situation. That's at least one advantage the US has over Italy.

The unlucky ones are more likely to be their parents, the service people they come in contact with, Uber/Lyft drivers, unlucky people who touch the same surfaces their grubby hands were all over a half hour before, etc.

The family referenced at r401 is an example of why some researchers think there may be a genetic component to the really serious cases, the ones resulting in intubation or death. Doctors in Seattle have also reported "family clusters" of serious cases in ICU there.

Scary, but if they can determine what factors put some people at much higher risk of serious infection, they can inform those people and isolate or treat them more quickly.

by Anonymousreply 407March 19, 2020 4:52 AM

Iran, China, and Italy have close economic ties. China ships workers to those places for infrastructure and garment industry work. China has also pretty much colonized Africa over the last two decades. Even the cities in America that are hardest hit have the closest direct ties with China through the residents of their large China towns who travel back and forth to China on a regular basis.

This one just happened to be of the every 100-year variety.

Daily death tolls in Iran have started increasing by more than 100 since Tuesday, and continue to grow by larger increments every day.

New study says 'high temperature and high relative humidity significantly reduce' spread of COVID-19.

A team of researchers unveiled the results of a new study last week that looked at how temperature and humidity may affect the transmission of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

According to the researchers' findings, "High temperature and high relative humidity significantly reduce the transmission of COVID-19." An increase of just one degree Celsius and 1% relative humidity increase substantially lower the virus's transmission, according to the data analyzed by the researchers.

Really CDC? This is the best that you can do? Scarves and bandanas? We are fucked!

CNN- The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has loosened its guidelines to allow health care workers who have been exposed to COVID-19 to continue working as long as they wear a mask, according to CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

"This is a huge concern, John, because this is how you potentially increase the spread, at least not slow down the spread," Gupta said to CNN's John Berman this morning. Within the guidelines, the CDC says bandanas and scarves could be used in place of a mask, Gupta said. The reason for these guidelines is due to a lack of personal protective equipment and not enough health care workers, Gupta said.

by Anonymousreply 494March 19, 2020 2:18 PM

I think the more we learn, which is very little right now, the more we are understanding there are clear susceptibilities which make some more vulnerable.

First, we thought it was lung issues - now it seems it’s heart issues. The fact that it enters via AcE-2 receptors - creating the potential risk for those with heart disease on ACE inhibitors seems like it should be explored more (no definitive, reliable evidence yet).

The number of stories about people with no health conditions who are being killed by it - while others just have a 24 hour bug - also seems to hint at something else going on. If we actually had testing in the US, we could be doing some really important analytics of who is most at risk.

CNN-US State Department is preparing to raise travel advisory to highest level: DO NOT TRAVEL

The State Department is preparing to raise its travel advisory worldwide to Level 4: Do Not Travel – the highest level — in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Four sources told CNN that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had approved a Level 4 advisory.

Late last Wednesday, the advisory was raised globally to Level 3: Reconsider Travel “due to the global impact of COVID-19.”

Politico was the first to report the heightened advisory level. CNN has reached out to the State Department for comment.

Another source told CNN that the move would be aimed at curtailing Americans’ travel abroad and to get those who are traveling to come home.

Old malaria drug hydroxychloroquine may help cure coronavirus: study

A drug developed over half a century ago to treat malaria is showing signs that it may also help cure COVID-19 — especially when combined with an antibiotic, a promising new study reveals.

Hydroxychloroquine, sold under the brand name Plaquenil — and also used to treat arthritis and other ailments — was determined to be effective in killing the deadly bug in laboratory experiments, Forbes reported, citing findings published March 9 in the Clinical Infectious Diseases journal.

“(W)e predict that the drug has a good potential to combat the disease,” the study’s authors, most from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan, wrote in a letter published in Cell Discovery on Wednesday, according to the report.

Now, French physician-researchers have completed a largely successful clinical trial using the drug — approved for use in the US in 1955 — to treat confirmed COVID-19 patients, according to a study published Wednesday.

A total of 36 patients — including 20 treated individuals and 16 infected controls — were enrolled in the study, led by Didier Raoult, an infectious disease expert from l’Institut Hospitalo-Universitaire in Marseille.

The treated group was given 600 mg of Plaquenil each day.

The researchers found that 50 percent of the treated group turned from positive to negative for the virus by the third day — and by day six, that figure was up to 70 percent.

Of the 20 test patients, six who were treated with both Plaquenil and the antibiotic azithromycin showed impressive results — with five testing negative at day three. All six of them tested negative at day six.

“Despite its small sample size our survey shows that hydroxychloroquine treatment is significantly associated with viral load reduction/disappearance in COVID-19 patients and its effect is reinforced by azithromycin,” the study concluded.

Meanwhile, researchers found that a pill containing two HIV drugs touted as a potential treatment for COVID-19 was not effective.

Reminds me of my landlord R540. We had rain and the roof leaked which caused the ceiling to leak. He said he was really upset and I asked why. He said because of the roof leaking, not about the fact I had to deal with a fucking pan under the dripping ceiling.

That pretty much goes with what I heard a Dr say yesterday R542, in that they will probably find something to treat the coronavirus before they will have a vaccine.

There have already been some promising studies about drugs that can reduce length of symptoms and how contagious one is from it. One of the biggest issues is those that need ventilators need them for a long time, not just a day or two. If we can cut that down the hospitals may have a chance.

20-year-old coronavirus victim was told ‘no need to worry’ by doctors

The tragic 20-year-old soccer coach who is one of the youngest known coronavirus victims had been sent home twice while seeking help — told by his doctor that there was “no need to worry,” according to his family.

Spanish youth coach Francisco Garcia — who would have turned 21 in October — initially thought he had a common cold when he fell ill on March 6, his stepfather, Juan Fernandez, told The Sun.

“He had a sore throat but he didn’t have a temperature,” Fernandez said, with his stepson seeing his doctor in Malaga three days later.

“His doctor told him to take paracetamol and sent him home and said there was no need to worry.”

They took him to a different health center the following day — just for him to be sent home again, this time with antibiotics, the grieving relative told the UK paper.

“By the next day he couldn’t stand up properly and he had a fever,” Fernandez said, saying they drove Francisco to Carlos Haya Hospital where he was immediately admitted and put on a ventilator.

“That was the last time Irene and I saw him,” the stepdad said, referring to Francisco’s mother, Irene Gomez, 42, who The Sun says was too devastated to talk.

“We knew coronavirus was killing people – but we never thought it would kill Francis,” he told the paper.

Garcia, a youth team coach at Malaga club Atletico Portada Alta, was initially diagnosed with pneumonia before testing positive for coronavirus.

A day later, blood work showed he also had leukemia, his family said. He finally died Sunday, less than a week after he first sought help. COVID-19 meant his loved ones were unable to see him to pay their last respects — and he was even “taken to the cemetery without us being able to say goodbye to him,” the stepdad said.

“I’m sure it was the coronavirus that took him so quickly,” he told The Sun.

“We’re proof that this virus needs to be taken deadly seriously.”

He said the family was “devastated and still in a state of shock.”

“A fortnight ago we were a normal family,” Fernandez said. “Now I’m stuck indoors with my wife and my mother-in-law, grieving and worrying if we’ve all got coronavirus too.”

Queens man dies from coronavirus after doctors sent him home A 76-year-old Queens man infected with COVID-19 died after being sent home from a hospital to self-quarantine, The Post has learned.

Teodosio Torres had been rehabbing his broken hip at Regal Heights Rehabilitation for two months and had underlying health conditions of diabetes and high blood pressure, police sources said.

On Friday, he was taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens after showing potential symptoms of coronavirus— but was sent home the same day and told to isolate himself as doctors waited for his test results, which eventually came back positive for the deadly bug, the sources said.

His wife called the hospital Sunday when his health began to deteriorate, the sources said.
