I'm much calmer now than I have been in a month.

Yes, it's boring being trapped at home but this means the virus will be controlled. The danger was always that too many people would get sick at once and normal life wouldn't be able to continue.

Now we just wait, and I'm reassured that all will be well.

CNN-Health care, consumer industry groups raise concerns about potential supply shortages

Over the past several days and weeks, health care and consumer industry groups and even federal agencies have sounded the alarm that the US may face major problems in keeping basic medical, food and retail supplies available during the coronavirus pandemic.

On Sunday, the group representing food and retail companies like Clorox, Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo told the State Department and the US Trade Representative they fear other countries cutting off exports to the US, which could exacerbate the public health emergency.

The group is particularly concerned about countries restricting chemicals, ingredients and products they manufacture from getting to the US.

For instance, India, a major drug ingredient supplier, has already limited exports of medications like acetaminophen, a common painkiller used for flu-like symptoms, and Germany has banned the export of protective equipment like masks, gloves and suits used by health care professionals.

President Trump also planned to speak to grocery, food and beverage corporate leaders on Sunday about supply chain concerns, including the Consumer Brand Association's head and major grocery chain CEOs.

Why haven't they shut down airline flights completely? If you are an American and decided to just now come back to America, too fucking bad. You're a fucking moron who we are better off without anyway. They should shut down all flights all over the world. They should have done that a month ago and we wouldn't be in this situation.

The numbers in Italy, France, and Spain, while alarming, are clearly in the highest upswing portion of the curve. The most vulnerable people are dying in droves. They are where China was a month ago. It will slow over the next two weeks. One of the reasons it is showing up in younger people at higher numbers now is simply that all the old people have already been diagnosed or died, so the age curve is going down concerning new infection rates.

When the numbers in Italy, France, Spain, etc. start to level out is when our numbers in America will be skyrocketing (if the stupid fucks can figure out how to test people). Everything that is shut down until April 1st right now will be ordered shut down until May 1st by that time.

We'd be better off right now if we just shot on sight every single person going out partying for St. Patrick's day. Not only would it help contain the virus but it would kill off the stupidest among us. Win win.

Watching W5 profile of Dr. Bruce Aylward, Canadian physician and epidemiologist by training and coordinator at WHO in Geneva. Interview Highlights:

- The vast majority of people in the world will become infected

- We've had weeks to prepare for this and there's still gaps in the response

- There are 30 year olds, 40 year olds, 50 year olds who will die, big gap in our knowledge

- No vaccine for this wave

- The Wayne Gretzy of viruses, not the fastest - virus finds the susceptibles

- Panicking not going to help

- Be concerned, be preprared, there's so much you can do to be prepared

- If you delay (shutdown of public events, taking economic hit, etc), you're going to end up with thousands of cases, and they're going to be sick for days, weeks

- I just hope they take action and avoid what damage this virus is capable of

- Talking about Wuhan - the world needs to learn from China - reversing course of outbreak by building Covid hospital

- Make sure people are educated, shut down events that are amplifying this

- Learn from SARS

- Canada has been preparing for this for decades

- Better track record than a lot of other countries

- Travel bans, virus is going to move anyway. Travel bans give you very false sense of security, will not prevent spread

- This is a respiratory illness - it moves very fast

- There's no such thing as zero risk, but you can reduce risk

- Going to see waves of this, seasons, comes back under control until there s more immunity in the world

- Another scenario, clusters

- It is a controllable disease, it can be contained but need to take action early

- We've changed our relationship to nature, jumped from animal to human, happening more and more frequently, climate change, all these things are adding up

- This virus is teaching us you never know everything

Officials with the Diocese of Brooklyn — which also covers Queens — said the worshiper at Incarnation Roman Catholic Church in Queens Village confirmed to have the deadly bug attended Mass their last Sunday, prompting “a deep cleaning and sanitization” at the church this weekend.

The diocese announced it was halting services at its 186 parishes as a result.

That decision came a day after the Archdiocese of New York covering Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island and some northern counties canceled Sunday Mass — including at the iconic St. Patrick’s Cathedral — over coronavirus concerns.

A Colorado nurse says her bout of coronavirus started with the “sniffles” — but soon involved nightmarish symptoms that were “nothing” like what she expected, according to a report.

Lisa Merck of Crested Butte said she tested positive for the virus after a vacation to Hawaii, where she attended a medical conference, news station KDVR reported.

“We went to a medical conference over there and on the day we were going to leave, I had little sniffles. That’s it,” Merck said.

On the plane ride, Merck began to experience aches on the left side of her body, and then her health worsened once she got home, the outlet reported.

“We got back and my muscles ached, my bones ached and my joints ached really bad,” Merck said. “It felt like someone was stabbing me with an ice pick and I was like, ‘I wonder if I have the flu.'”

Her health eventually deteriorated to the point where she headed to the emergency room.

“I felt really short of breath, I felt very fatigued,” she told the outlet. “Finally, on Sunday night, I told my husband, ‘I need you take me to the ER. I don’t feel well whenever I stand, I feel like I’m going to faint.’”

She was ultimately was tested for the virus and the results came back positive last week.

She told the outlet she has lost five pounds due to nausea, and has suffered muscle aches.

Though she’s in the medical field, Merck said she never anticipated the serious symptoms that she experienced throughout the ordeal.

“It’s nothing like I expected,” Merck told KDVR.

Merck said she’s “definitely getting healthier” but won’t return to public life until she’s cleared on two tests 24 hours apart.

The US has reported coronavirus cases in every state except West Virginia as more than 3,100 people have been infected with the virus.

“LVMH will use the production lines of its perfume and cosmetic brands … to produce large quantities of hydroalcoholic gels from Monday,” LVMH said in a statement.

“These gels will be delivered free of charge to the health authorities,” LVMH added.

Even Deplorables have to be offended by the focus on the stock market rather than people’s health. It’s like he was in an alternative reality - only focused on the market not on people dying. An hourly worker who isn’t getting paid doesn’t give a damn about the Fed rate - and shouldn’t.

by Anonymousreply 124March 15, 2020 9:32 PM

Yes, R118, that's exactly what it means, although you have to be a bank to get that rate. The rest of us will get whatever rate those banks choose to charge.

by Anonymousreply 126March 15, 2020 9:33 PM

Remember Trump has routinely publicly bashed the Fed Reserve chair when the numbers start to look bad. He probably just caved into Trump demanding he slash the interest rates

the problem is they're already so low this won't really help and as others said they'll have nothing left in the toolkit as the economy and stock market continue to decline

it's pathetic how wimpy the enablers around Trump are from the Fed Chair to the Surgeon _General

If the virus continues for the rest of the year, we are going to experience the Great Depression that our grandparents talked about.

The fed has no cushion left and the virus effect on this economy hasn't reached anywhere near the apex yet, and won't for several more months. The truly amazing thing is, this fool brow beat the fed and the fed caved. Rather than let the "taskforce" speak about the issue at hand, the orange wretch comes out and brags about how happy he is that the fed cut the rate to near zero. Over 3,500 now test positive for this virus and more than 60 are dead. People are dying and this fool tells us it's under control, but don't worry, the market will be fine.

Trump has ballooned the deficit, is pushing the Fed to use negative interest rates (so banks get paid by the government to borrow money), and has destroyed future income by slashing taxes to the wealthy and huge businesses. And has been talking about cutting entitlements as a way to reduce federal spending. The only reason the country hasn't been in a recession yet is because the tax cuts kept it artificially booming, at the cost of future growth. It's all short-sighted maneuvers used by Republicans and a Democrat will, as usual, have to fix it.

The fact that mortgage rates went up last week after rates went down is a good indication of how useless the Fed move is likely to be. The old easy tricks won’t work to fix this. [quote]Yes, Italy is awash with it and the death rate is daunting. But is it? Or as a percentage of the total infected, is it within the accepted range?

The problem is the sudden influx of sick and dying people is overwhelming their health care system and the same thing is likely to happen when it hits here. Our for-profit health care system slashes surplus hospital beds because there’s no money to be made from empty beds. China was forced to build mobile hospitals in literally days to accommodate all its COVID-19 patients. There’s no move to gear up like that here and that’s the scary thing.

Also if you extrapolate Italy’s infection and death rates to our population the numbers are HUGE.

That’s what I was told when I called about refinancing my mortgage last week. Even though 10-year bond rates are down a whole percentage point below my mortgage rate, banks are charging whatever they want. The spread between 10-year bond rates and mortgage interest rates is widening (they’re supposed to be tied to 10-year bond rates) but that doesn’t matter, apparently. Much of my family are teachers. They have not isolated this weekend. I think they have been in denial because they have been stuck in school in the worst possible transmission environment and couldn’t escape. Now with school cancelled they went out and did social things - I think partially in celebration and partially because they figure they already have been exposed. I’m in deep self isolation - in part to avoid them.

by Anonymousreply 282March 16, 2020 12:50 AM

R262, I went to the gas station at about 6:30 am on Saturday and there were already people there. Same at Costco at 6:45. People were there before they opened.

You have to figure that people need gas when they’re going from place to place looking for toilet paper or whatever. So they’re going to be using more gas than usual.

I can’t imagine being one of those people, looking for t.p. after they had a month or more warning, to stock up. Reddit is full of stories of people begging their elderly, sick, frail parents with one foot in the grave to stock up weeks ago. Lots of them refused. One guy said he would buy extra stuff for his dad every hurricane season and every time his dad would scoff. He said he’s on his own this time, because he’s spent weeks ridiculing his son for stocking up. Apparently lots of old people like to go to the market every week and don’t buy any extra.

The UK had 319 cases last Monday and ten deaths. It did nothing to contain the disease and people spent the week going to race meetings (1m at Cheltenham Races), premiership football matches and rugby matches. All unis and schools still open. Planes from Italy still landing and passengers not being vetted.

Now we're on Sunday, six days later, and we have 1330 cases and 35 deaths. This is what happens when the spazzy Brits apply Blitz Spirit to a pandemic. As yet, the government still haven't cancelled a single event.

I feel like I owe the DL, yes the DL and this very thread, a tremendous amount of gratitude. I am 39, about to be 40 this month, and never eat at home. I kept reading these threads with fascination along with the news. 3 weeks ago, per the DL, I silently stocked a few weeks of goods, TP, water, canned foods etc. By reading these threads, I felt like I was mentally prepared for this week, where as a lot of my friends are now just coming to grips with it now and they are panicking.

Everything in LA is cleaned out since mid week. I wish I had done a bigger regular grocery shop my last time at TJ's. I think that was the one thing I didn't expect was for everything to change overnight so suddenly. The minute the WHO announced the pandemic, that was when shit got real here. I actually have a few N95 masks and got boxes of these black latex gloves that will hopefully be donated to a fisting party after this all over. Work is on hold now, so maybe there will be a way to volunteer to deliver things or do runs for elderly/disabled here to get out of the house.

One thing I have learned with the panic buying that I can share is that if you are in a place where there is a scarcity on TP/paper towels/basic cleaning supplies, go to those ghetto liquor stores. While you will pay a premium, you can also go into an empty store and they have some of the things that people are flighting about at the grocery store. My friend went to the grocery store in BH/WeHo this morning at 7am when they open. The line was around the block and they delayed opening until 8am to restock. I really am grateful to the DL preppers. Stocking up 3 weeks ago gave me piece of mind. There are very smart people on DL (Elderlez and some of the others) and the info gets distilled faster than the news. Thank you DL. Stay healthy my friends.

by Anonymousreply 294March 16, 2020 2:04 AM

That’s elation about being ahead of the curve, like buying Apple stock in 2001, because you knew it would be good.

This is the opposite of that, but it feels the same.

Shutting down for 2 weeks would reduce income by around 4% for people unable to work from home. If they go back and STILL get infected, it’s an even more problematic economic hit, because they lose additional wages.

Flattening the curve is all we can do, and that means extreme measures.

I followed the first thread, and still thought it was possible enough to keep an eye on, and BOOM! it’s here and causing panic and confusion. The stages of grief are applicable.

Acceptance is a bitch.

How long do you think it will take to get back to some kind of normal, or the new normal that lets people circulate somewhat more freely and work normally etc.

I think the big thing is an effective treatment. I can't believe they won't have something by the end of August. Just a guess but I know they're working from existing drugs, not trying to invent a new one.

by Anonymousreply 296March 16, 2020 2:09 AM

At least a couple of months, and that is the best case scenario. The worst case is several months, and then it could come back again in the fall. A vaccine takes at telecast a year, assuming they can develop one. We don't have a vaccine for cold and flu, so it's not even clear they can develop one for Covid-19. I worry about looting, burglaries and muggings.

by Anonymousreply 297March 16, 2020 2:24 AM

Sorry, meant at least a year for a vaccine

by Anonymousreply 298March 16, 2020 2:28 AM

The peak of the current infection in the US is going to be in the next 3 weeks or so, and will likely start to taper off within 3 months or so, but will linger through the summer. If there's no vaccine by the fall and it's cyclical, it may be a year or more.

I know it sounds crazy but this shit is everywhere, I gather, and I am god damned determined I'm not going down without a fight.

by Anonymousreply 310March 16, 2020 3:44 AM

R309, I don't fear economic collapse. It's gonna be bad, for sure, but necessity breeds invention. One of the UK banks, for example, already said to customers: If you're fucked up because of Corona we can arrange a 3 month holiday on mortgages and personal loans. For once, the lot of us, are really all in this together. That's a bank. Government hasn't really started thinking about what to do (Nancy's bill was a start.) It is in no one's interest to let everything collapse. Everyone knows this is for now, not forever.

My coronavirus rule of thumb is that at any point, if you look back on life three days earlier, it is unrecognizable. That has been true in Italy for about three weeks. It’s terrifying to project it forward.

Social distancing in Italy means

* your city is legitimately spooky

* NOBODY is outside

* people can’t even go to funerals of their loved ones

* people don’t visit their elderly parents

* their kids stay inside and see nobody

* they fear everybody else might be a carrier

and that is today. I don’t know what it will look like next week, or next month.

Spain’s coronavirus death toll doubles overnight as country goes into lockdown

Spain’s death toll from coronavirus doubled to 288 on Sunday after the country dramatically restricted its 47 million residents’ movement, according to a report.

The climbing number of infections come after Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a partial lockdown Saturday as part of a 15-day state of emergency.

All citizens must stay home except to buy food, go to the pharmacy, to the hospital, to work or for emergencies.

“We will (eventually) return to the routine of our jobs and again visit our friends and loved ones,” Sanchez said in a nationally televised address.

He continued, “Until that time comes, let’s not waste energies that are essential now. Let’s not lose our way.”

I'm in Santa Clara County, where we just jumped up to 113 cases. even though Stanford announced it was going online a couple of weeks ago, they only announced school closures on Friday.

Basically, there's always this lag time. Two weeks ago, we went out to dinner at a crowded restaurant. Came back and found one of the two cases in the county was in-town. Started using precautions the next day--avoiding crowds, using hand sanitizers going in and out of places, not touching my face when out. Thanks to DL, I'd already been jumpy enough to stockpile some basics beginning in January, though that was mostly because of the supply disruptions I was expecting because of China.

A week ago, we ate out again, but used Purell in and out and didn't sit near anyone. Now we only go out to grocery stores and take walks. This coming week, we're going to cut down on visits to the grocery store. I've read going outdoors is fine as long as you keep your distance. Some experts advise changing clothes and shoes. I haven't done the clothes yet, but I now have outdoor shoes that stay outside. First thing I do coming in is go and wash my hands. No guests.

It is fucking dreary, frankly, but I figure I've got a shot since I started this two weeks ago.

Are they still tracking regular flu deaths in the elderly or are they just folding all the numbers into the death totals coming out of all these countries? I really doubt they are differentiating the two statistically.

Italy, for example:

[quote]In recent years, Italy has been registering peaks in death rates, particularly among the elderly during the winter season. Influenza epidemics have been indicated as one of the potential determinants of such an excess. The objective of our study was to estimate the influenza-attributable contribution to excess mortality during the influenza seasons from 2013/14 to 2016/17 in Italy.

Their numbers during those peaks reached over 20,000 excess deaths during some of those years. Italy is just filled to the brim with really old people all living on top of each other and touching each other all the time.

The US:

[quote]Influenza killed about 80,000 people in the 2017-2018 season, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The previous high for a regular flu season, based on analyses dating back more than three decades, was 56,000 deaths.

We need to stop panicking. This is what happens in a social media world with 24/7 for-profit news coverage.

by Anonymousreply 348March 16, 2020 7:53 AM

And, R347, those things are nothing like this at all. People need to study history and science a little more. Throw in some statistics, too.

by Anonymousreply 349March 16, 2020 7:55 AM

While I agree with your point {R348], it is also what happens in a world run by lying populist scumbags who refuse to engage with the issue in a sensible manner. People no longer trust what they are told or have faith that their leaders care and they panic.

by Anonymousreply 350March 16, 2020 7:56 AM

R348, Again, we have a vaccine for the regular flu, but we don't have one for the Coronavirus. This thing also has a higher mortality rate. If it spreads to the extent of the regular flu, then we could see a lot more deaths.

by Anonymousreply 351March 16, 2020 7:56 AM

In China and Italy, they're using the HIV medication Kaletra to treat coronavirus. The Prep queens here might already have immunity!

by Anonymousreply 352March 16, 2020 7:59 AM

3330 cases in the UK with 35 deaths is a death rate of 2.7%. All have been in their 80s, except for one man in his 50s.

by Anonymousreply 353March 16, 2020 8:04 AM

R351, we do not know the mortality rate because we don't know the infection rate. If, as I suspect, regular flu deaths are being folded into these numbers, then that is adding to the supposed mortality rate. There is no way they are testing all the deal old people to see what actually killed them. There will be some that were positively tested and then died but, at this point, in places like Italy, that would be the exception. If they are old and seemed to have the flu when they died, they are adding them to the list of Coronavirus deaths.

We will also develop immunity to this, starting now. We will also have a vaccine for this next year, too, but the flu vaccine we do have each year is always hit or miss as it is.

After this is all sorted out, we'll see a much lower mortality rate than even the lower estimates now. I'm only hoping that this doesn't end up being a 'boy who cried wolf' scenario. If this ends up with a very low mortality rate and everything goes back to normal by the end of the summer or even just by the end of the year, when something with a 10% mortality rate comes along, people aren't going to believe it.

by Anonymousreply 354March 16, 2020 8:05 AM

[quote] 3330 cases in the UK with 35 deaths is a death rate of 2.7%. All have been in their 80s, except for one man in his 50s.

Sweetheart, who taught you math? It's a smidge over 1%.

by Anonymousreply 355March 16, 2020 8:07 AM

[quote]3330 cases in the UK with 35 deaths is a death rate of 2.7%.

To follow R355's response, you should probably go ahead and add a zero to the end of that first number because the real number of infected is probably closer to 33,300 with most of them showing no or mild symptoms and not even being tested. So, we can drop the mortality rate down to .1% which is pretty close to average annual flu mortality rate.

So, again, stop panicking and sign up for some online math, science, and history classes during your time off.

by Anonymousreply 356March 16, 2020 8:13 AM

A good article about how the threat of the virus is very real.

I know we have at least one guy on here who says Italy is "just letting old people die" but according to this article, Italy is still not out of beds in hospitals just yet. They're approaching max capacity but not yet at that point.

Now they're saying everyone with a common cold should self quarantine. I have accepted everything so far and I will gladly stay at home if I get infected or if there's even a slight chance I already am infected without knowing. But a fucking cold?! WTF?! I've had a cold for weeks. I have a runny nose and a slight sore throat. I don't have a fever, I don't have a cough and I don't have difficulty breathing. It's a COLD. This is the first time I disagree with advice from the Norwegian health institute.

by Anonymousreply 358March 16, 2020 8:45 AM

[quote]If, as I suspect, regular flu deaths are being folded into these numbers, then that is adding to the supposed mortality rate.

There's no reason to suspect this.

What you mean is you ASSUME this is happening, but you're assuming this because your personal opinion is that the Covid-19 virus is not a real threat, and that you know this because your "math, science, and history" knowledge is superior to everyone else's.

If that were true, you wouldn't be making assumptions, passing them off as fact, and telling everyone else they were stupid for not believing you. You wouldn't be saying "we will also develop immunity to this" when there have been initial studies indicating that some people don't develop immunity, and that immunity to the L strain doesn't necessarily mean immunity to the S strain, and vice versa. We simply don't know yet whether it's poor testing or something else.

Again, I urge everyone to go to reputable sources for their information, and question what you read, especially if it comes anonymously and packaged with insults.

A 103-year-old woman has become the oldest person to beat coronavirus and return home.

Zhang Guangfen recovered from the disease after receiving treatment for just six days at a hospital in Wuhan – the Chinese city at the centre of the outbreak.

The centenarian’s quick recovery was down to her having no underlying health conditions apart from mild chronic bronchitis, her doctor Dr Zeng Yulan told reporters.

She was diagnosed at Liyuan Hospital, Tongji Medical College, in Wuhan on 1 March, Chutian Metropolis Daily reports.

The newspaper published a video showing the woman being escorted out of the hospital to a waiting ambulance by a group of medical workers as she was discharged on Tuesday.

Older people and those with pre-existing medical conditions are more at risk of developing severe coronavirus symptoms.

The grandmother has become the oldest person to recover from the deadly disease so far – days after a 101-year-old man also beat the virus in Wuhan.

A 100-year-old man with Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension and heart failure also recovered from the virus in Wuhan this week after being treated by military doctors.

Wuhan’s 11 million residents have been in lockdown since late January.

The disease has infected more than 80,700 people in China and killed more than 3,000.

by Anonymousreply 363March 16, 2020 8:59 AM

Though less deadly, this virus is worse than Ebola because it is more easily spread. A category 1 storm spread across a large area (like the entire world!), will cause more destruction than a category 5 storm in a limited area. On top of that, THIS storm is lingering for weeks and months. Aside from the physical damage to our health, emotional well being and our normal way of life, there is also the enormous financial which will be multiple times worse than the 2008 financial crisis, Katrina and 9/11 combined when all is said and done. Right now the world is using trillions of dollars to fight this fire, but it continues to burn and simmer. There is no stopping it anytime soon. Yeah boo, this is bad. Like really, really bad.

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s micromanaging of the city’s coronavirus response is preventing city health officials from getting the latest guidance about how to contain its spread to the public, five sources told The Post.

“He needs to step back and let the health commissioner make the decision. There’s just too many missteps,” one local elected official told The Post.

City Health Department officials are “wildly frustrated with Mayor de Blasio,” according to an agency source.

“Mayor de Blasio has instructed everyone that he will personally approve, edit and rewrite all coronavirus communications,” according to the agency source.

“He’s wrong on a lot of things and he’s making a lot of mistakes,” the source said, referencing the mayor misinforming a traveler who had returned from Italy last week that she didn’t need to self-isolate unless she had symptoms.

On Sunday morning, de Blasio said on WBLS that the disease cannot be spread by people who do not show symptoms — though the CDC has said that is unknown.

he agency source said the health officials have sent de Blasio updated guidance, but it’s “sitting on the mayor’s desk and not moving.”

The source added that the mayor’s relationship with his Health Commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot, is “toxic right now” because of the logjam. Her No. 2, Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control Demetre Daskalakis, stopped attending the mayor’s briefings last week after disagreements with the mayor.

“Every word of this is true,” said a City Hall source

Two additional sources confirmed the communications breakdown.

Freddi Goldstein, the mayor’s press secretary, confirmed that he reviews new guidance but said he’s not line-editing and causing a logjam.

If you're dealing with a cold that you've had for weeks and weeks you need to get to a doctor. With luck it's now a bacterial sinus infection secondary to the viral infection you had weeks ago, and you can get antibiotics and be healthier for when COVID-19 finally comes your way.

[quote]they don't have enough ventilators as we speak.

I am not criticizing anyone directly by using this example and I understand we're all nervous... I am too... but...

It's exactly the kind of wild assertion that needs a fact check and if you can't fact check, you need to give facts the benefit of the doubt.

The statement assumes the need for ventilators will inevitably outstrip demand or that everyone needing one will need it at the same time. That isn't necessarily so. Until it is, stop scaring yourself and everybody else. Not just in this instance, in all instances.

Recall in 80% of cases these symptoms are mild. Mild illness does not require a ventilator. And I know you can do the math and it can make you poop your pants and write you wills but nowhere in the history of how not to worry has anybody ever advised you to spend a lot of time believing that what might happen will happen.

It is not guaranteed we will become Italy. Social distancing is now happening, we do not live in anywhere near the dense, social, demonstrative conditions that reflect Italian life and culture.

Symptoms, on average, manifest in five days. If social distancing starts to work, which it should, the next week will be indicative, and so will the week after that. And so on.

Maybe we need a Worst Fears thread where we can unload our neuroses and anxieties, which are understandable and justified, but not helpful or calming, to you as an individual or to anybody else.

We will come through this. It can be managed. It will be hard and at times frightening. But we will get through it and life will become very much like we always knew it. And when it is: keep washing your fucking hands! xo

Runny nose and congestion are not CV symptoms. I’ve been monitoring myself for any hint since I left NyC on Thursday. Only stuffy nose - which I think is allergies.

The respirator issue is real. The only thing I’m concerned about. They can set up beds in tents or auditoriums for hospital beds. But respirators are the key choke point (no pun intended). According to the DHS secretary, the number of respirators available is a “national security” secret - aka, it’s a major issue that they don’t want people to know for fear of justified panic. Ignore it if you want for your own sake - but it’s the point I make to anyone who is being flippant about this.

by Anonymousreply 434March 16, 2020 3:54 PM

I’ve been making the point - one of the most important things that should be happening now is the manufacture of respirators - similar to WW2 production. There is also a more intensive “oxygenation chamber” (medically incorrect) which was a choke point for China that should also be manufactured. It’s probably all made in China now though.

This whole process is pseudo - socialism which is why the right is freaking out. Requires communal decision making and government enforcement. The economic impact will likely also require some element of socialism - via unemployment support and other “welfare”. The Bernie model is more useful now than the Tea Party model. Not that Fox News watchers will ever see, be told or understand that.

“As you know this is a virus that’s transmitted through droplets, so these are little pieces of liquid,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, told reporters during a virtual press conference on Monday. “When you do an aerosol-generating procedure like in a medical care facility, you have the possibility to what we call aerosolize these particles, which means they can stay in the air a little bit longer.”

“That’s not even in the realm of things we’re asking governors for,” said Katie Miller, a spokeswoman for Vice President Mike Pence, who is leading the Trump administration’s response to COVID-19.

“There are a lot of rumors,” Miller said. “I promise you, I’m sitting in every single meeting… so I can give you guys a yes or no.”

Jim Scuitto of CNN tweeted Monday morning: “There are active discussions within the Trump administration to encourage a possible ‘curfew’ across the nation in which non-essential businesses would have to close by a certain time each night.”

Miller swiftly denied the report by Scuitto, a former Obama administration political appointee. “This is not correct,” she wrote on Twitter, before briefing a group of journalists in West Wing workspaces.

Rumors of a national quarantine swirled last week, contributing to a countrywide ransacking of grocery stores by people afraid of what’s ahead. White House coronavirus task force member Anthony Fauci said during media appearances Sunday that he’d rule out nothing to stop the virus.

But Pence appeared to pour cold water on the idea, saying at a Sunday briefing that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would issue new guidelines Monday but that “we’ll also respect and defer to decisions that are made by governors, by state health departments about what’s best for that community.”

Coronavirus case linked to Winter Party Festival in Miami Beach, LGBTQ group says. (can't post...DL keeps rejecting Miami Herald... may be is loaded with HTML....)

BY MARTIN VASSOLO

MARCH 16, 2020 06:30 AM

Even when some of Miami’s biggest shows went down like flies because of coronavirus fears, one party in Miami Beach went on: the Winter Party Festival, which has been a Beach fixture since 1994.

During the welcome reception for the Winter Party Festival on March 4, a festival representative and Mayor Dan Gelber demonstrated a hands-free handshake that attendees should use. It involved jazz hands. Organizers rolled out a hygiene policy and said they gave out 10,000 bottles of hand sanitizer.

Now, after the week-long festival was held as scheduled, one of its attendees has tested positive for COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.

The positive case was announced late Sunday by Rea Carey, the executive director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, which organized the festival.

In a statement on the Winter Party Festival’s official Instagram account, Carey said the attendee did not experience symptoms during Winter Party Festival and that it is unclear if the person contracted the virus at the festival.

“I am writing to let you know that on Saturday night (the 14th), I was informed that one of our Winter Party Festival (WPF) guests has tested positive for COVID-19 this last week,” Carey wrote.

“We are grateful to them for alerting us, particularly given that they were not experiencing symptoms during WPF. While we know there are many places people could have been exposed before and after Winter Party as this virus has developed, we wanted to make sure you have this information as soon as possible. The health and safety of anyone who participates in any Task Force event is of great importance to us.”
The festival was held at venues across the city, including Exchange Miami, Treehouse, and at an event installation on the sands of South Beach. Events also took place in Wynwood and Wilton Manors in Broward County.

Organizers had put out fliers encouraging attendees to wash their hands — especially after coming into contact with others. “Don’t go back to the dance floor all nasty. Who wants to ruin their vibe by getting sick,” reads a flier for the festival. “Regular handwashing, particularly before and after certain activities (don’t make us list them here), is one of the best ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick and prevent the spread of germs to others.”

visitors that the city remained “open for business” despite the cancellation of Ultra Music Festival, Calle Ocho Festival, and HistoryMiami Museum’s Map Fair in Miami.

“Until further notice, we’re taking all precautions but we’re open for business,” Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales said on March 5. “I know we’re already getting inquiries in light of Ultra.”

The succession of cancellations jolted South Florida at a time when the total death toll due to COVID-19 was 16 and Florida’s Department of Health announced the discovery of the first two cases in South Florida. The number of cases in Broward County alone, now considered a coronavirus cluster, had ballooned to 36 as of Sunday evening.

On Sunday alone, Miami-Dade County announced a rule that will force bars, restaurants and nightclubs to close at 11 p.m. starting Monday and halve capacity at those businesses and at theaters. The county-wide order followed announcements earlier in the day from Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale to close stretches of public beach to crack down on large spring break gatherings.

“Given what we knew at the time about the virus prior to WPF and working with local Miami Beach officials, we took steps to ensure the safety of attendees,” Carey’s statement reads. “The educational posters throughout WPF venues and 10,000 hand sanitizers we distributed over the weekend were both appreciated and utilized by attendees.”

Carey advised attendees to continue monitoring their health and if they were to test positive, that they could email organizers.

“Information and circumstances have changed rapidly since WPF,” the statement reads. “We continue to encourage all WPF guests to monitor their health, practice social distancing, wash hands with soap, use hand sanitizer and contact their doctor if they think they are exhibiting symptoms. If you test positive for COVID-19, please contact those you were in direct contact with so they can take steps to monitor their health and speak with their doctors.”

R520 because of right wing media. Fox has been going on for the last 2 weeks now that Democrats are politicizing the situation and "Pelosi is in the way" when it comes to providing aid/relief to the public. They also constantly show clips of mainstream media saying "they're whipping up hysteria for no reason other than to hurt Trump"

deplorables see this and buckle down harder in their support.

They don't realize that Fox/right wing media knows it's a reliable play to keep the narrative of how Trump is an honest, intelligent, benevolent saint of a leader who's the victim of left-wing smears

R520. Hang in there. There is still hope especially for the undecided. Soon, more state leaders will begin to vent their frustration at Trump once the hospitals reach capacity and deaths start to stack up. They have been fairly silent so far but this is going to change. The last thing that Trump wants is another Katrina where one vocal leader in New Orleans helped to bring down the presidency. This will be even worse for Trump because he is going to get attacked from multiple fronts. Everyone will be looking to put a knife in him just like they did with Cesar. However, unlike Cesar, Trump will survive and will bear witness to his own political demise and we will all live happily ever after. Amen and all that.

Looks like he's learned his lesson--shutting the fuck up about the economy and stock market. Every time he opens his hole about them, the market drops.

As if ...... Retirees are the high risk population, and they want them to return to germ central?

Book a room and catch a flight

I say, "Barbados isn't bad."

She says, "I'd love to see Bermuda."

And I say, "Woman, are you mad!"

Corona Triangle makes people disappear

Corona Triangle don't go too near

But Trump doesn't see my angle

And he thinks I'm being dumb

So Corona Triangle

Boris is an outlier still in the UK. My friend went to a Lewis Fataldi concert last night. Around 10k there.

Reporter: How would you rate your response to this crisis?

Trump: I'd rate it a 10.

There were half the number of cars on the streets that I normally see on a typical Monday. It felt like an early Sunday morning.

Imagine if Trump spoke like Macron and said "Stay home and read. Hard times make you realize how important culture is". The repugs would invoke the 25th amendment.

Trump: 10

by Anonymousreply 567March 16, 2020 8:05 PM

Trump just rated his response & handling of The Corona a "ten" !

This coming from a guy who claimed it a Democratic Hoax that would be over in a week or two?

He's also trashing Cuomo, saying that he should be doing more for his State.

I loathe this eviman.

When i started my new job i took the personal finance advice of many to build a 6-9 month reserve. This meant staying in an apartment with roommates, though I feel I'm getting too old for that game, and religiously funding my savings as soon as I get a paycheck. It was hard sitting on that cash while the stock market went up and up, but I didn't believe in Trump and I knew that a job can end tomorrow. While I remain employed, for now, I am so happy that I sacrificed gave myself the necessary cushion to weather this storm through the remainder of the year.

For those that can save, please be smart with your money and always prepare for the worst. People will tell you a million and one things to spend your cash on, but when faced with these bleak economic realities, it's better to have cash on hand. I feel for those living paycheck to paycheck. That was me for some time, so I get the struggle and hope the government does the right thing and send hard cold cash to all Americans.

Dow & S&P worst since 1987 eldergays, what happened in 1987 that made stocks drop? I thought repubs always say the 80s were "our best economic years"?

Based on the latest dribble coming from the Whitehouse, this situation must already be very bad in the US. Reading between the lines, the sudden about face and recommendations about social distancing, the possibility of a recession and the talk of a cure in a year leads me to believe that the current situation is far worse than I thought. They seem to be preparing the public for some really bad news that is about to drop such as tens of thousands of Americans are already infected based on the testing results that they already have and have not yet released.

by Anonymousreply 581March 16, 2020 8:14 PM

Did anyone hear that if banks go under it might be hard for the FDIC to insure people will get their money? I saw it this morning, but was getting ready to leave the house and didn't hear the whole story.

by Anonymousreply 582March 16, 2020 8:16 PM

[quote]They seem to be preparing the public for some really bad news that is about to drop such as tens of thousands of Americans are already infected based on the testing results that they already have and have not yet released.

The Ohio Health Department estimated last week that 100,000+ residents were already infected, so you can assume tens of millions.

by Anonymousreply 583March 16, 2020 8:17 PM

This must be very bad if Drumpf is giving all these press conferences. Granted he loves the sound of his own voice more than anyone but he's also a lazy mother fucker. He must be exhausted. I'm guessing he's upping his Sudafed sniffing.

Highlights of Trump Press Conference:

- You don't have to buy so much, take it easy, relax

- When this passes, you're going to see numbers, pent up demand

- Stores are stocking up at a level that is beyond Christmas time

- Using full power of federal government to fight the virus

- Phenomenal people, working around the clock and they're doing an incredible job

- It's a very contagious virus, it's incredible, but [bold]we have tremendous control over[bold]

- Federal Reserve, it's a tremendous thing that just happened right now

- Thank you very much

Meanwhile the numbers in France continue to rise

Guardian- France’s Public Health Authority has reported 21 new deaths from coronavirus taking the total to 148, an increase of around 16%. It says on its website that the number of cases had risen to 6,633, up from 5,423 on Sunday, which is a rise of more than 20% in 24 hours.

1). A lot of the people who will die were going to die anyway. It sounds cruel, but it's true.

2). The entire world should be demanding compensation from China. They hid & lied about this, they allowed flights from Wuhan to Milan (where there are ghettos of Chinese garment workers). We should cancel some of our debt that they hold. #F_China.

by Anonymousreply 587March 16, 2020 8:26 PM

R585. Thank you for the summary. I can not watch that bullshit anymore. Makes me want to scratch out my eyes and peel off my ears.

by Anonymousreply 588March 16, 2020 8:27 PM

Trump can't give rallies right now so he's trying to fill the void with press conferences.

Everybody's going to die anyway, so I guess we can do away with all medical care.

Of that number 65 patients are hospitalised with nine in intensive care, professor Sotiris Tsiodras, an expert in infectious diseases told reporters.
