And now they are shitting bricks because all the PR events have been cancelled, no trips to the US are allowed and many companies are slashing their marketing budgets left and right. And my friends have no savings. Well, tough shit.

Share how to make a sourdough starter?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 14, 2020 1:13 PM |
Making a starter is very very easy - just mix flour & water together in equal proportions on day 1 in a non reactive container at room temperature. Any flour works, and tap water has always worked better for me then bottled or filtered.
Day 2-5, remove half of the mixture, and add back in equal amounts again of flour & water. You’re looking for a yeasty, sour smell to develop, and lots of bubbles - that means it’s alive.
By day 5 or 6, it should be doubling in size and is ready to use in any recipe calling for a sourdough starter! No need to buy yeast anymore.
Am linking to a good write up, the only thing I don’t love about this is the size of the initial starter. You can use much much less flour/water to avoid waste, I am currently doing 1/4 cup flour & water and it is working great. Once it is actually a starter you can bake with the discard (pancakes, waffles, muffins, tons of options) so having extra to throw out isn’t so terrible.

New York now has 524 positive cases, an increase of 100 from yesterday, with 117 patients now in hospitals.

Using tote bags instead of plastic could help spread the coronavirus
The COVID-19 outbreak is giving new meaning to those “sustainable” shopping bags that politicians and environmentalists have been so eager to impose on the public. These reusable tote bags can sustain the COVID-19 and flu viruses — and spread the viruses throughout the store.
Researchers have been warning for years about the risks of these bags spreading deadly viral and bacterial diseases, but public officials have ignored their concerns, determined to eliminate single-use bags and other plastic products despite their obvious advantages in reducing the spread of pathogens. In New York state, a new law took effect this month banning single-use plastic bags in most retail businesses, and this week Democratic state legislators advanced a bill that would force coffee shops to accept consumers’ reusable cups — a practice that Starbucks and other chains have wisely suspended to avoid spreading the COVID-19 virus.
John Flanagan, the Republican leader of the New York state Senate, has criticized the new legislation and called for a suspension of the law banning plastic bags. “Senate Democrats’ desperate need to be green is unclean during the coronavirus outbreak,” he said Tuesday, but so far he’s been a lonely voice among public officials.
The COVID-19 virus is just one of many pathogens that shoppers can spread unless they wash the bags regularly, which few people bother to do. Viruses and bacteria can survive in the tote bags up to nine days, according to one study of coronaviruses.
The risk of spreading viruses was clearly demonstrated in a 2018 study published in the Journal of Environmental Health. The researchers, led by Ryan Sinclair of the Loma Linda University School of Public Health, sent shoppers into three California grocery stores carrying polypropylene plastic tote bags that had been sprayed with a harmless surrogate of a virus.
After the shoppers bought groceries and checked out, the researchers found sufficiently high traces of the surrogate to risk transmission on the hands of the shoppers and checkout clerks, as well as on many surfaces touched by the shoppers, including packaged food, unpackaged produce, shopping carts, checkout counters, and the touch screens used to pay for groceries. The researchers said that the results warranted the adaptation of “in-store hand hygiene” and “surface disinfection” by merchants, and they also recommended educating shoppers to wash their bags.
An earlier study of supermarkets in Arizona and California found large numbers of bacteria in almost all the reusable bags — and no contamination in any of the new single-use plastic bags. When a bag with meat juice on the interior was stored in the trunk of a car, within two hours the number of bacteria multiplied tenfold.
The researchers also found that the vast majority of shoppers never followed the advice to wash their bags. One of the researchers, Charles Gerba of the University of Arizona, said that the findings “suggest a serious threat to public health,” particularly from fecal coliform bacteria, which was found in half the bags. These bacteria and other pathogens can be transferred from raw meat in the bag and also from other sources.

Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro will be tested for coronavirus again
The test will be done early next week, to rule out any chance that the firebrand leader caught the virus during his trip last week to President Trump’s Florida resort, Mar-a-Lago, a Sao Paolo paper reported, according to Reuters.
Bolsonaro’s communications secretary Fabio Wajngarten, who was part of the large entourage that met with Trump, tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday. Two others who were at the resort last weekend also tested positive for the deadly bug, including Charge d’Affairs Nestor Forster Jr. at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington.
Bolsonaro, who has downplayed the seriousness of the pandemic, posted that he tested negative on his Facebook page with a photo of him making an obscene gesture, following reports that his test came back positive.

Think about how lucky we are right now. We have the internet so we can keep up with this in real time. We have this board where everyone can share and if scared, can get support.
This is a good time to think of ways you can help others now. There are people that are more frightened than you. Emails of comfort and reassurance can go a long way to help someone.
Just because you can't be in the physical presence of someone doesn't mean that you can't still socialize. We have the internet! Can you imagine what this would be like if it had happened 20 years ago? we would have no clue what was going on. warnings might have come too late.
For all those that think this is a joke like pretend coughing in peoples faces, etc. Be very, very careful. I have noticed that the ones that think it is a big joke seem to catch the virus like the basketball player who touched all the microphones. There were also a few others that I can't think of now.

More info on the Australian coronavirus vaccine
[quote] Australian coronavirus vaccine goes into test production
[quote] A factory in Melbourne has started producing a test dose of a potential coronavirus vaccine which scientists will begin testing on animals this week.
[quote] The test vaccine was developed in just six weeks by University of Queensland researchers using world-first molecular clamp technology invented in Australia.
[quote] Once the team's vaccine is finished, it will be tested on animals, first for safety and then for effectiveness.
[quote] If the vaccine is both safe and effective, human trials can begin.
Human trials for safety and efficacy can take months, but this first part developing vaccine candidates has apparently gone really fast.

This man has ZERO self esteem. He believes if he doesn't make things look perfect then people will think less of him. This si why he always lies. His parents destroyed him.

I'm echoing that about Costco, like I said before. We got there about 30 minutes before opening time, and the line wrapped around the parking garage and started up the ramp to the next level. They opened the doors fifteen minutes early, and the crowd got in very quickly. Even with hundreds of people at once, the store didn't feel that crowded and we managed to check out in less than an hour after we hit the door.

I just realized why Trump shook everyone's hands yesterday. He thinks if he has the virus he is taking everyone down with him, especially all those successful CEO's.
He has said more than once that if he loses the Presidency (if he has to resign of if he is removed) he is taking everyone with him

Interesting that NYC is only now reporting its first death - in a clearly highly susceptible very old woman. Gives me some hope since the 2-10 day incubation period would imply that if people did start being serious about it 2-3 days ago, the peak should happen in the next 7 days. Of course that assumes people are being diligent and adhering to guidelines - at least the most susceptible people.
Young people go have fun and keep the bars and restaurants alive in NYC. Especially the gay bars.

[quote] Decisive, draconian action is needed.
To do what, R167? It's a strong statement that you made, one sure to inflame readers. But then you left out the most important part. Why do we need this action?
The virus has already spread everywhere. That part is done. And, yes, of course it could get worse. But it's already awful. Our private healthcare system has slashed ICU beds to the bone. We in the US have far fewer of them, per capita, than any of the national health care systems maintain in Europe. So what decisive and draconian action do you want?
I only bring it up because while I'm happy to practice social distancing, I do not want to be ordered into a quarantine that is enforced 24/7 by the National Guard. So if you have something decisive and draconian that is also reasonable and effective, for fuck's sake... spit it out.
But if you are just having a hissy fit, sit down and shut up.

It’s an anaesthesiologist in the north of Italy saying that the ages of the patients in ICU is starting to skew younger. Twelve per cent of those who have been treated in intensive care are aged between 19 and 50, according to official figures released last week. Around 52 per cent are between 51 and 70 years old, with the rest all over 70. Can anyone get the article to link? [quote]It's not that we don't recognize Trumpmas a psychopath, it's just that none wants to be the first to say it. You might end up buried somewhere in the new Pentagon parking garage.
For what it's worth, I have been commenting for quite some time on DL including posts like this, the dreaded BRF and so on and so forth. I have been following Trump for some time as well never commenting too much because mostly, everything has been said. The CV crisis however, is another matter. I have been watching DJT closer than usual and the behaviour is virtually identical to the person (man) I work for. It would take too long, too much detail to go into the why's but I will try.
I can almost predict what Trump will do based on the person I am referring to (boss). I see the same lack of effect, empathy, disengagement, aggression, limited intelligence yet "cunning., There's an undeniable thirst or craving to outwit, con everyone. They are exceptionally well presented, tailored but that order hides the paradoxical extreme of a disordered mind. They love/hate you, there is no in between, there's no loyalty, they will cut you down to others behind your back, no guilt, no conscience, very, very basic childlike reasoning, cannot handle complexity, must be in control at all times, you must think like him, supreme arrogance, to name just a few.
But the most haunting aspect is their "aloneness" - they are never really 'connected' - they cannot connect intellectually, emotionally. They are not "long distance' people - in the sense of they tire of people very quickly, you are there to serve a purpose and only that purpose. People like Trump and my boss are like hollowed out people. They are like mirrors and reflect back what they think you want to see/hear. They morph into whatever you desire them to be for "that moment" then they move on to another 'victim.'
I know I"m not describing it very well but I guess the worst part of it all they cannot seem to stop it. Why can't they see the dysfunction? It almost seems like they love it. It's a big game and the game is to continue conning, outwitting. A friend of mine once asked me: Why do you think he does this? Why is he like this? Neither one of us could come up with an answer. Knowing what I know about my boss, I am always somewhat guarded, fearful when Trump does press conferences. There is nothing substantive from a personal standpoint. Trump sat in the Oval Office last week and gave the most perfunctory, robotic, disengaged speech I have ever seen from a POTUS during a time of national crisis, I was not surprised. Here he was speaking to millions of vulnerable, hurting Americans and not one ounce of sympathy, just empty, void. At that moment, I felt truly frightened and sorry for Americans.
I guess I'm calling it, r204.

In previous threads we speculated the very rich have access (though they may not use it immediately) to forms of healthcare we can not even imagine. totally stupid comment, the French eat and drink well and are much healthier than americans because they aren't fat slobs
" How can the French eat a high-fat diet, yet face lower than expected rates of heart disease? This question has puzzled scientists for decades. Some people have thought that wine is such a beneficial drink that it can undo the damage of a rich diet. But research shows that much more than wine drinking affects the health of the French.
First, consider the rates of obesity in France. While 31 percent of Americans are so severely overweight that they are technically obese, only 11 percent of the French are obese. And this number is a recent development.

St. Patrick’s Day partiers hit the town over officials’ pleas amid coronavirus outbreak.
Chicago’s annual river-dyeing and St. Patrick’s Day parades were canceled, but green beer and Irish whiskey still flowed Saturday in River North, where hundreds flocked to celebrate despite officials’ pleas for “social distancing” amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m not about to put my life on hold because this is going around,” said Kyle Thomas, a nurse from Colorado who flew in to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with his Chicago friends.
Meanwhile, at a Saturday news conference announcing 18 new cases of coronavirus that brought Illinois’ total to 64, Gov. J.B. Pritzker scolded the throngs of young people who ventured out to party.
“We need you to follow social distancing guidelines too,” Pritzker said. “You can have the unintended tragic effect of spreading COVID-19 to others who are more vulnerable.”

This WP article on Jared stepping into the mess with his usual "I'm smarter than everyone" attitude, is pretty damning:
The economy was grinding to a halt. Stocks were in free fall. Schools were closing. Public events were being canceled. New cases of the novel coronavirus were popping up across the country.
And then, on Wednesday, the day the World Health Organization designated the coronavirus a pandemic, Jared Kushner joined the tumult.
President Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser — who has zero expertise in infectious diseases and little experience marshaling the full bureaucracy behind a cause — saw the administration floundering and inserted himself at the helm, believing he could break the logjam of internal dysfunction.
Kushner rushed to help write Trump’s widely panned Oval Office address to the nation. His supermodel sister-in-law’s father, Kurt Kloss, an emergency room doctor, crowdsourced suggestions from his Facebook network to pass along to Kushner. And Kushner pressed tech executives to help build a testing website and retail executives to help create mobile testing sites — but the projects were only half-baked when Trump revealed them Friday in the White House Rose Garden.

So what happens if the US goes into lockdown mode? You can’t leave your house?
by Anonymous | reply 296 | March 14, 2020 11:37 PM |
More Jared:
Kushner entered into a crisis management process that, despite the triumphant and self-congratulatory tone of public briefings, was as haphazard and helter-skelter as the chaotic early days of Trump’s presidency — turning into something of a family-and-friends pandemic response operation.
The administration’s struggle to mitigate the coronavirus outbreak has been marked by infighting and blame-shifting, misinformation and missteps, and a slow recognition of the danger. Warring factions have wrestled for control internally and for approval from a president who has been preoccupied with the beating his image is taking.
The scramble for solutions is occurring in an overriding atmosphere of trepidation of saying something that Trump might perceive as disloyal and of fear that their fumbles could cost the president his reelection in November.
“The problem is no one is sure who is in charge,” a senior administration official said. “Unless someone comes to you and says, ‘I was with the president five minutes ago,’ and you know they’re telling the truth, getting irreversible direction is a little difficult.”
This portrait of Trump and his administration’s management of a pandemic that in a few short days has completely altered American life is based on interviews with 19 senior administration officials and other people briefed on the internal deliberations, many of whom spoke anonymously to share candid assessments. Oversold and inflated
In a bid to produce swift action, Kushner helped orchestrate a Rose Garden event Friday that he hoped would rally Wall Street at the close of a brutal week of trading, but the administration’s marquee announcements were not fully formed.
The news conference had the intended immediate effect, fueling a rise in the stock markets before they closed at 4 p.m. But things unraveled from there once it became clear the picture of progress that Trump presented to the public was, at best, considerably inflated.
by Anonymous | reply 297 | March 14, 2020 11:37 PM |
Few decisions are made in these meetings, however. Trump has only occasionally attended, usually when Pence requests his time. Neither Kushner nor his wife, Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and also a senior White House adviser, has attended — though Kushner’s focus is now on the coronavirus and he has assembled many of his allies in the government to assist.
The West Wing these past few weeks has felt like the early days — brimming with chaos, beset by backbiting, and now populated by return characters. Hope Hicks, the former communications director and Trump confidante, is back, this time as a top aide to Kushner. Hicks has been involved in the coronavirus response, as have Kushner deputy Avi Berkowitz and Adam Boehler, another Kushner ally who is chief executive of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.
Trump is between chiefs of staff — acting chief Mick Mulvaney is transitioning out while Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) prepares to replace him — and the lack of a forceful gatekeeper has led to the president conducting decision-making as he prefers: With upward of a half-dozen aides and advisers in the Oval Office, all scrambling to perform for him as they await his decisions, which sometimes depend on his mood.
“People just show up in the Oval and spout off ideas,” said a former senior administration official briefed on the coronavirus discussions. “He’ll either shoot down ideas or embrace ideas quickly. It’s an ad hoc free-for-all with different advisers just spitballing.”
by Anonymous | reply 298 | March 14, 2020 11:38 PM |
'We'll practice that'
Kushner was enlisted partly at the request of Pence’s chief of staff, Marc Short, who went to his office at the beginning of the week to ask for help wrangling the entire White House staff to prioritize the coronavirus response.
To that end, Chris Liddell — who works closely with Kushner and is the White House deputy chief of staff for policy coordination — has begun organizing various meetings and working groups. He is expected to sometimes lead a pre-meeting before the full task force meeting each afternoon, which one White House official said would hopefully help streamline the process.
And for all the problems with his Rose Garden news conference, Trump did manage to achieve one of his key goals: to halt the plunge in the stock markets. The Dow Jones industrial average shot up sharply near the end of the trading day as Trump declared a national emergency and turned his lectern over to a parade of industry chief executives to offer reassuring statements.

What is insane to me is the amount of people I read on my online neighborhood groups that want to become little Stalins.
“There are people about! Call the police! Close the bars!”
They want to force people to surrender their right to free assembly for the “greater good”. It’s not enough the government shuts down its own institutions (offices, schools), or that businesses want to close or limit themselves (work from home, cancel events). Ok, you do you.
But they want the *government* to force businesses to close and criminalize personal assembly.

All cases set for trial from Monday to April 3 will be rescheduled to a later date, the release said.
All other hearings -- including pre-trial, contested and show cause hearings -- will continue as normal, according to the release.

Some content from a column by Niall Ferguson in The vTimes. I think in among it is some good news.... certainly a plausible explanation for why Italy is in such dire shape and the States is not yet:
"This brings me to the third potential category error. Is California — or New York state — Italy? If so, then I agree that Trump is done. But are we sure? Will the impact of the coronavirus really be as devastating to one or more US states as it has been to Italy?
It is now quite widely assumed that it will be. That is why there has been panic-buying of hand-sanitising liquid and toilet paper in many of our local supermarkets. That is why a significant number of my friends are leaving California and New York for states they think will be hit less hard by the pandemic. John F Kennedy airport was thronged yesterday with people doing what, since time immemorial, they have done in times of plague: fleeing the big city (and spreading the virus).
If the whole of America goes the way of Italy then, adjusting for population, within two weeks there will 95,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases and nearly 7,000 dead. The war zone scenes in some Italian hospitals will be replayed in San Francisco or New York — and they may even be worse, as America has slightly fewer hospital beds per capita than Italy.
The puzzle is why this is not already happening. Between December 1 and February 5, roughly the same number of direct flights went from Wuhan to Rome (28) and Paris (23) as went to San Francisco and New York (23 each). Indeed, according to research by network scientists at Northeastern University in Massachusetts, America was the fifth most likely country to import Covid-19 from China, after Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. The risk for Italy was substantially less. Moreover, according to a new paper from the same team, America should have begun to see local generation of more than 50 infections per day sooner than Italy.
Yet, although the curve of confirmed US cases looks about as steep as the curve for Italy, there appears to be a lag. Some have hypothesised that America is about 11 days behind Italy, so San Francisco will be where Milan is today by March 26. But why is it behind? The obvious explanation is the disastrous slowness with which America has been able to make functioning Covid-19 tests available. Even without testing, however, we would expect to see many more people already falling ill and dying in American hospitals. It is not as if older Americans are on average healthier than their Italian contemporaries — rather the opposite, I should think.
A better explanation, which I owe to two German economists, is that Italy’s social network may differ from America’s in terms of general gregariousness and physical proximity, and, more importantly, in terms of interactions between the older and younger generations.
A fourth and final category error is to confuse a real pandemic with science fiction. Just as it was underreaction to dismiss Covid-19 as “just the flu”, it is overreaction to think we are now in the film Contagion or the novel Station Eleven. We are entering the panic phase of the pandemic. Paradoxically, that is a good thing — because just a couple more weeks of complacency really would have been an error."

What good is shutting things down for two weeks? What if you have it but don't show symptoms, but then on day 3 of being back, you do. Yeah, it may be great that your co-workers stay home from work, but what if they go out to a bar the Sunday before you go back and comes in contact with someone who's infected. Then two weeks from then they start spreading it. And why still have public gatherings with only 100 or 200 people? All it takes is one infected person.
by Anonymous | reply 357 | March 15, 2020 1:55 AM |

Because they're spreading out the infections for as long as they can, r357 -- people are going to get this, and these clusters of infections will keep happening until there's a shot we can take to help, but we can't have it all happening all at once. "Why coronavirus cases in Italy are high"
"The high number of coronavirus infection cases in Italy may be explained by the expanding air travel with China. Italy is the European nation with the highest number of air connections with China after the air connections between the two countries tripled earlier this year."
"Italy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with China in early January 2020 to expand the air links between the two countries in order to expand tourism."

I work with a company that has employees spread across four Mainland China cities. Everyone has been working from home since returning from the Chinese New Year holiday. Depending on the city, many haven't even left their apartments, except to buy food once a week, since early February. They announced today that Shanghai and Shenzhen staff will return to the office (with a very long list of precautionary measures strictly enforced), while Beijing staff will WFH for another week.
While this is hopeful news, it's also discouraging knowing that, because the West didn't take it seriously and is so far behind in containment (and even testing!), our ordeal will likely last even longer.

I'm more concerned about about our brave, courageous President. Meeting everyone, shaking hands, etc. He is NOT afraid of the virus and, for whatever reason (he's the President, he's got stuff we don't have), our President is setting a bad example.
He is counseling prayer, now. After it's all over and many have gotten sick or died, he can claim to his Right-wing Christian followers that God protected him, because he is a chosen one.

The hysteria surrounding this is shocking. Yes, this virus can cause serious illness in some. That is no laughing matter. But a 2% mortality rate means *98% of people who contract the virus RECOVER*. This is not the deadly plauge some of the media hysteria is making it out to be. It just isn't. Use common sense. Wash your hands. Avoid crowds. Stay home if you are concerned about the risk. And everyone needs to *STOP HOARDING* food and toilet paper. It is ridiculous. There are no issues in the supply chain for food and basics like toilet paper. There are inventory issues due to people hoarding. The fear and panic is getting worse than the virus itself.

R400 That biggest issue wit this virus is that due to its infectiousness, a viral outbreak can go off like a bomb in a community, overwhelm the local health system causing social chaos and other collateral damage. [quote]A man dressed in a hazmat suit entered a Walmart on Saturday night and began spraying items with an unknown substance, Las Vegas police said.
[quote]The spraying incident occurred at about 8:20 p.m. at the Walmart in the 7600 block of Arroyo Crossing Parkway, near Rainbow Boulevard and the 215 Beltway.
[quote]Metropolitan Police Department spokesman Officer Aden OcampoGomez said 13 people came into contact with the substance. He said no one was injured or has any symptoms, and the man was taken into custody.
[quote]Special units were on the scene at the Walmart, and OcampoGomez said authorities will work to identify the substance.
[quote]After the man left the Walmart, someone inside the store apparently followed the person and was able to provide police with a license plate number. Police shortly afterward located the man’s vehicle and took him into custody, OcampoGomez said, who did not detail the charges.
[quote]The situation happened at a time when people are flocking to grocery stores to stock up on items during a period of uncertainty as businesses close operations during the coronavirus outbreak. Police urged people not to buy in bulk at this time.

Troubling report from the Guardian
Guardian- German newspaper Welt am Sonntag has reported that US president Donald Trump has sought exclusive rights to a vaccine for the coronavirus which is being developed by a German-based company, CureVac.
The report, which quoted unnamed sources, said Trump had offered large sums of money to German scientists working on the vaccine, and that the Germany government was working to prevent the US procuring it on this basis.

Indeed R414. Every week they keep promising that testing will dramatically ramp up. Up to 75000 was the number they previously gave for this week then millions in the coming weeks. Yet they have only performed less than 11000 in the last official update earlier this week. 11000! Meanwhile state leaders are demanding more testing be made available, some supplies are running low, and many people who should be tested are not getting tested. Meanwhile, the administration holds a lovefest at the Whitehouse offering more excuses and promises and afterwards Trump sends signed printouts of the stock markets gains to the Senate. In a startling move the briefers said that New York will not focus on contact tracing - the process of identifying people who may have come into contact with an infected person - a strategy encouraged by the World Health Organization to combat the spreading virus.
'Interviews with confirmed cases and contact tracing is not a good use of our resources when the virus is widespread. There will be little emphasis on tracing,' briefers said at Saturday's meeting.
Contact tracing is a strategy that has helped South Korea get their coronavirus outbreak under control.

Italy has now confirmed 21,157 cases, second highest in the world after China.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University want to use a method known as “convalescent serum,” which involves harvesting virus-fighting antibodies from the blood of patients who have already beaten the illness, NBC News reported.
Dr. Arturo Casadevall, chair of the molecular microbiology and immunology department, said the treatment has not been implemented for decades in the US, though blood from survivors was used to treat the Spanish flu, polio and measles.
“I knew the history of what was done in the early 20th century with epidemics,” Casadevall told NBC. “They didn’t have vaccines then, they didn’t have any drugs then — just like the situation we face now.”
In a new paper, Casadevall and a colleague, Dr. Liise-anne Pirofski, make the case that using blood serum or plasma from recovered patients might be the best option for treatment until a better cure is developed.
The report, which was published Friday in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, noted the practice was used in China during the 2009 outbreak of H1N1 influenza and the Ebola epidemic in 2013.
“Although every viral disease and epidemic is different, these experiences provide important historical precedents that are both reassuring and useful as humanity now confronts the COVID-19 epidemic,” the researchers wrote.

WaPo: After disastrous communications during the 2001 anthrax attacks, the CDC wrote a 450-page manual for how to communicate during public health crises. Trump is breaking every rule in the playbook.
“For those of us in this field, this is profoundly and deeply distressing,” said Matthew Seeger, a risk communication expert at Wayne State University who developed the CDC guidebook alongside many top doctors, public health researchers, scientists, consultants and behavioral psychologists.
“It’s creating higher levels of anxiety, higher levels of uncertainty and higher levels of social disruption. … We spent decades training people and investing in developing this competency. We know how to do this.”
For three years, the Trump administration has often taken a hostile stance to science and its practitioners, but health crisis experts say it’s not too late and the fruits of their research — like the CDC’s 450-page manual — are waiting, untapped, to serve as a road map to help leaders navigate the growing pandemic.

Sciencenews.org - As sweeping efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic go into effect around the globe, researchers are starting to get hints of just when patients are most contagious.
People infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the disease, may test positive for the virus both before and after they have symptoms. But a new study of nine people who contracted the virus in Germany suggests that people are mainly contagious before they have symptoms and in the first week of the disease.
Infectious viruses were isolated from about 17 percent of nose and throat swabs and more than 83 percent of phlegm samples during that first week, researchers report March 8 in a study posted at medRxiv.org.
Patients produced thousands to millions of viruses in their noses and throats, about 1,000 times as much virus as produced in SARS patients, Clemens Wendtner, director of infectious disease and tropical medicine at Munich Clinic Schwabing, a teaching hospital, and his colleagues found. That heavy load of viruses may help explain why the new coronavirus is so infectious.

by Anonymous | reply 490 | March 15, 2020 4:12 PM |
Stop trying to turn Fauci into some sort of hero. He's directly pushed the Trump talking point that "we don't have the infrastructure" for large-scale testing and must do it with a combination of private and public involvement, like this is a new situation. Yet the Obama administration ran a million tests for Swine flu in the first month of the epidemic, somehow.
Totally disingenuous framing. And then his "as I've said many times before" during the press conference shows he has a quick and passive aggressive temper.
He's doing everything he can to not blame the current Administration and make it look like it's a failure that just happened to take place in Trump's watch. Remember who his boss is.

If he disagrees with Trump, it is the perfect opportunity for Trump to fire him and say he has failed in his job and needs to be replaced (I.e., it’s not my fault - again)
by Anonymous | reply 493 | March 15, 2020 4:16 PM |
R493 he can't do that because people respect the doctor and not Trump. Even Trump in his piggishness knows it would make HIM look bad.
Remember who he works for. Trump ran out most of the principled and non-toadying members of his administration in the past three years. We are left with the repugnant sycophants.

None of the experts know if the virus will go away during the warmer months, because we've never had the Coronavirus spread around the world before.
The worst case scenario is that it doesn't and we have live with the virus for the next year, or longer, until a vaccine or effective treatments are developed. If that's the case, then it will be a literal nightmare. It will be interesting to see if the virus starts to spread again in China now that they are starting to come out of quarantine. Pray that it doesn't.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | March 15, 2020 4:20 PM |
Fauci is 79. If he had any principles, now is the time to use them.
But he doesn't. He's the company man. The company mouthpiece. He voiced the company line for each president since Ronald Reagan. Anyone who was around in the 1980s and paying any attention knows about Anthony Fauci. It is NOT a good sign that he is still there and still handing out the propaganda.

CNA - Stay-home notices (MUST STAY AT HOME AT ALL TIME FOR 14 DAYS) for all travellers entering Singapore from ASEAN countries, Japan, UK, Switzerland
When asked why the Government did not put in place travel restrictions for travellers who had recently been in the US – which currently has more cases than Japan – Mr Wong said travel restrictions are "not just about the numbers".
Instead, some of the countries under travel restrictions have "abandoned any attempt" at containing the spread of the virus, he said.
Noting that the UK and Switzerland had said so "publicly", Mr Wong said: "If there is no deliberate effort to contain, then we anticipate that the numbers of infected cases in these countries will rise even more sharply in the coming days or weeks."
However, the US has "put in place quite stringent border control measures" for travellers from Europe and is also starting to "ramp up" some of their measures, including testing, the minister said.
"We are watching America and like I said, this is a dynamic situation, every few days we have more information about the status in different countries," Mr Wong said.
Singapore may add new countries to the list or adjust border controls countries already on the list, depending on how those countries deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.

This is just incredible that they aren't shutting down all schools. I heard of one school district that is sending food around by bus because they did shut down the schools. You want a meal? Go stand at your bus stop and they will deliver twice a day.
The time has come to think way outside the box. In 10 years is anyone going to even remember that schools were closed in the spring of 2020? No.
Those bastardos on the right side of the Senate aisle are all flying back and forth this weekend, then having a big lunch en masse on Tuesday.

Agree that Fauci is sadly a tool now. Social distancing is really only for those who can afford to do it. Many don’t have a choice and will lose their jobs or food if they don’t show up. There needs to be more anger directed towards local authorities for not testing. The Trumps are stalling to figure out how they can profit!

Scary article from NJ: One hospital there has 11 CV cases, 6 of whom are in the ICU. All between the ages of 28-48. And they have gone from being mildly ill to needing to be on a ventilator in the ICU very fast:
[quote] One of my employees, who is a beloved guy here, got it in the community and came in,” he said. “We had him in our ER in isolation. We were monitoring him, and the decision was: ‘He seems to be doing a little bit better. We think we’re going to discharge him home under self-isolation and monitor him from there.’ But we wanted to wait another hour or two because we were just seeing a little indication that something’s not right.
[quote]“In that two hours, he decompensated so fast. He is one of the ones in the ICU on a ventilator. He’s fighting for his life. It goes that quick.
[quote]“That’s what people aren’t seeing. The flu doesn’t do that to you. These people are going from being moderately OK to being on a vent. And the next thing that happens is they start to decompensate, and then you get into organ failure.”

Heidi Klum is waiting to hear if she's infected with the coronavirus after falling ill earlier in the week, and now her husband has developed symptoms as well.
Heidi posted this video, showing her on one side of a pane of glass and musician Tom Kaulitz on the other. She said, "Like many of you, I also have been sick all week and, unfortunately, my husband who returned from his tour a couple of days ago is also feeling ill. To be safe, we are staying apart until we get the results of our coronavirus tests."
She says they were able to get tested Saturday.
TMZ broke the story ... Heidi showed up at 'AGT' Wednesday but almost immediately left before going on stage because she was feeling sick.
Heidi now says of her husband, whom she married last year, "As much as I want to embrace him and kiss him, it is more important to do the right thing and not spread further."
She adds, "These are strange times." No kidding.

On Sunday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on President Trump to mobilize the military to help deal with the outbreak. This follows after former Vice President Joe Biden said the Department of Defense should be planning to deploy.
"The Department of Defense should be planning now, should have been planning to prepare for the potential deployment of the resources provided, medical facility capacity and logistic support that only they can do," Biden said Thursday.
Defense officials say their first priority is maintaining the health, welfare and "readiness" of the 1.36 million members of the active duty military, as well as the 800,000 members of the National Guard and Reservists in addition to some 730,000 civilian employees in the Department of Defense.
And while some National Guard units have been involved in helping with logistics and planning at the state level, the US military's capacity to provide medical support is limited.
By the numbers: There are 51 military hospitals compared to some 6,000 civilian hospitals nationwide, according to one US defense official, meaning the US military has only about 1% of the nation's hospital capacity.
Military hospitals admit some 200,000 patients annually as compared to civilian hospitals which admit about 36 million.

Here's Devin Nunes being an idiot today:
As top infectious diseases expert Dr. Anthony Fauci was making the Sunday show rounds to tell the public to temporarily avoid restaurants and bars amid the coronavirus crisis, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) was peddling a contrary and potentially dangerous message. During an appearance on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo, the California Republican said that there are a lot of economic concerns so people should support local business.
“If you’re healthy, you and your family, it’s a great time to go out and go to a local restaurant, likely you can get in easy,” Nunes stated. “Let’s not hurt the working people in this country...go to your local pub.”
Images around the country of St. Patrick’s Day revelers packing bars and pubs—despite the disease having now spread in all but one U.S. state—drew widespread criticism that many Americans were not taking the pandemic seriously. The coronavirus has already resulted in thousands of deaths worldwide and dozens within the United States. Local and state governments have begun implementing social distancing policies in order to mitigate the spread of the highly contagious disease.

Testing positive for this virus is not at all the same thing as getting sick. But it does mean that you might and there will be a waiting time to find out what your individual response is going to be.
NO WAY Trump will weaken himself politically by voluntarily entering that waiting period. He is a sociopath. He doesn't care about anyone around him. And it is unthinkable that he would take that political hit if he could avoid it. So, of course, he has announced that he was tested and that he is negative. That gives him room to maneuver, for now, and the consequences be damned. That's his M.O. for his entire life.

[quote]Travesty at Dulles: -Hundreds packed in line for hours -Passengers with corona in their own line, but no isolated area, meaning those without snaked & stood close to the infected -No sanitizing of fingerprint pads -No protocol for the ill, all free to go

So far, this new decade really sucks. The only thing that could turn it around is if Trump is voted out in November.

[quote]There is a reason that they are digging mass graves in the middle of the night.
A Trumpist informed me that those aren't mass graves, they're a means for Iran to hide its nuclear materials -- because, of course, the virus is a hoax.

LAX's international customs terminal is a zoo on a normal day. I was there in early January and couldn't believe the sea of humanity as multiple plans arrived in the early morning. Now make it a zoo with coronavirus.

Ventured out after feeling ‘off’ all week to find roads, supermarkets, parks and restaurants as busy as on any early spring sunny Sunday. Got talking in the car park and everyone was saying their shopping trips were initiated by the constant news reports of panic buying and the feeling that they should be joining in. Do we need to have one of our loved ones to be ill for this to feel real? Strange times.

R573: Fuck Cuomo also. He is waxing poetic about the numbers and the need for pop-up emergency centers because the crisis will overwhelm the system. Yet, he said, today, he will not lock down NYC...Both he and DeBlasio are talking out of both side of their mouths - until it is too late...

Most cities in the Philippines are on a 30-day lockdown. They're handling this much better than the US.

Here in Ohio we've gone from 1 to 4 to 13 to 26 to 36 in about a week. There haven't been any cases in my county yet, I expect that to change within the next few days.

Just got off of the phone with my mom who lives in the US. I live abroad. Although she's a non Trump supporter, she's swallowing everything that he and his cronies are saying hook, line and sinker. America is truly doomed.

Yeah, Trump is busy watching Fox News and tweeting about Chuck Schumer, Fake News, the FBI and pardoning Michael Flynn this morning. Everything BUT COVID-19 readiness.

My dad is 81 and is going everywhere. He is not taking this seriously because he thinks I and other family members will take care of him. I have underlying illness and likely will not be able to, plus he is making life difficult for everyone around him as it is. I guess he will have to figure it out when he gets this and there are no hospital beds, because he won't listen otherwise.

Trump and Pence can lie all they want, but the truth will not be denied....... The White House and Mar-A-Lago are crawling with The Corona, as are many already infected visitors and staff.
💀 It's only a matter of time, but it will be too late for the truth to set them free.
