Is anyone happy Joe Biden won or are they just happy Bernie lost? I see no winners.

Everyone who voted for Biden is happy.
You see no winners, cool.
I see a big loser... BURNIE.

R2 The latter. I preferred Kamala tbh
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 11, 2020 1:23 AM |
I'm happy for one reason: the people we need to vote in November to win are showing up in large numbers for Joe.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 11, 2020 1:23 AM |
I’m happy Biden seems to have such broad appeal. I would have preferred others (Pete, Warren, Kamala) but I am a NYC college educated woman so we don’t “need” people like me to win. I’m happy to see the black voter turnout and his appeal to white suburban voters in swing states. Happy to see former Repugs happy to back him. I think he gives us the best shot to win in Nov and, at this point, that’s my only priority.
I’ve always personally hated Bernie but also have always felt that he had no appeal beyond the very left, which seems to be correct.

He can at least prevent more Kavanaughs (we know Moscow Mitch will block anything he can).
Biden will build a top notch team around him. He would be handling this coronavirus really well. If he wins, that will probably help us down ballot to at least keep the House.

One of the other parts about Biden that I find appealing is that--in addition to appointing competent people--he'll also likely appoint people that don't agree with him 100% of the time, which is a GOOD thing.
Bernie only wants yes-men.

Clyburn also referenced Reps. Marcia Fudge of Ohio, Val Demings of Florida and Karen Bass of California as potential choices, as well as Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

Women were a big reason for Joe Biden’s win in Michigan Tuesday night.
Sanders edged Biden, 48% to 47% with men in Michigan, but Biden won women by almost 20 points, 57% to 39%, according to exit polls.
Biden also won white women by double-digits. Sanders won white women in Michigan in 2016.
Because Biden won them by double-digits on Super Tuesday, it was a group we identified as one that could very well decide the election in Michigan — and it appears they did.

Carville is right. It's time to end this and put together the best and brightest to lead the charge against Trump and the Republicans. But, the money, computer skills, marketing, EVERYTHING, has to be brought together to win. Let VP Biden nap (we'll bring him out when needed) and let the rest of us get the job done!

For the first time, eligible Michiganders were able to register to vote today — the same day they cast their ballots.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced that 13,000 people used the new rule to vote today, with almost half of those votes coming after 4:30 p.m. ET. That led to some long lines, Benson said, especially at county clerk offices in college towns such as Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo.
Benson spun those lines as a net positive.
“I think this reflects the significant amount of interests that young voters have had in our election today, first time voters as well,” Benson said.
Those first-time and young voters were not able to carry Sen. Bernie Sanders to victory in Michigan however, despite him winning the under-30 vote by 77% according to CNN’s exit polls.

The KING MAKER speaks!
Clyburn: DNC should 'shut' down primaries, debates if Biden sweeps states
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) said that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) should step in to end the primary process if former Vice President Joe Biden sweeps the six states holding primaries and caucuses Tuesday night.
Clyburn, the No. 3 House Democrat and a prominent Biden backer, said on NPR that the DNC should cancel the remaining contests and debates if it becomes clear that the former vice president has an insurmountable delegate lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
“I think when the night is over, Joe Biden will be the prohibitive favorite to win the Democratic nomination, and quite frankly, if the night ends the way it has begun, I think it is time for us to shut this primary down, it is time for us to cancel the rest of these debates — because you don’t do anything but get yourself in trouble if you continue in this contest when it’s obvious that the numbers will not shake out for you,” Clyburn said.

I actually think from Bernie's perspective it makes the most sense. He'll get to have a much bigger say in the rest of the campaign if he doesn't decide to do a scorched earth run until the convention.
And yes, his being willing to do that is likely predicated on Biden being a man.

I'm very happy Joe won. He has always been my personal preference. And I believe deeply his decency is what the moment demands. The torch can pass in 2024 and then who knows what can happen? But now the ship must be righted. It is listing badly. We've got to get back to something close to normal and old school Joe, unawake and indifferent to everything everyone younger than him gets distracted by (in the quest for office, not in society) I think that's what we need for just a few years.
So, yes, I'm fucking thrilled Joe won. And I'm pleased Bernie lost decisively and demonstrably. His youth revolution failed to man the barricades.

If Pete gets a role in a Biden administration, it will likely be a really visible one. Biden clearly really likes him and seems to want to help his career out.
Chief of Staff would be a good guess. I don't think he's quite experienced for one of the bigger cabinet jobs.

Pete literally saved Biden’s candidacy. If he was still in on Super Tuesday, Klobuchar would be too and they would have splintered the vote so many ways, Bernie would have won Super Tuesday and he would have won today too. The moderate vote was being split too many ways for any one candidate to win.
Biden better not give him some bullshit position. At least give him something he can use as a platform to run from. He can’t run from Indiana, it’s too red.

The VP slot is substantial for a President as old as Joe. Potentially, Pete could be VP for four years and shadow Joe. Then he’d be well prepared to run. Because it appears as a change of administration, it’s possible he’ll get a second four years, too.

I know this is never going to happen, but I think if Sanders was smart he would withdraw now. He's got to know there's no hope of winning now. Instead of another debate (which wouldn't help him anyway) he should take some of his dough and book TV time and give a very dignified and measured farewell address. He should release his delegates to Biden NOW and exit with class and dignity. He's 78 years old - why keep slogging along on a campaign he know is lost? They should let him speak at the convention in Milwaukee during prime time (instead of sitting in the gallery pouting like he did with Hillary) and he can still keep his Senate seat.
But, as I said, this is never going to happen.

My proposal for VP, for the future, is that a select group of party members choose four candidates, then send the list to the presidential nominee for him to choose one; with the option to repeat this one more time with other possibilities. I imagine they do something like this already, informally, but the VP slot is too important for one man to have the power to decide. (A convention will never vote a nominee down.)
by Anonymous | reply 185 | March 11, 2020 3:07 AM |
Klobuchar, Warren and Harris need to keep their asses in those Senate seats. They'd be wasted as VPs. I'm not all that nuts about Stacey Abrams, but she checks a lot of boxes, and apparently she's done a lot of anti voter suppression work, so that helps. We need every Senate seat we have.
by Anonymous | reply 186 | March 11, 2020 3:07 AM |
R107 and others... yes, Bernie does deserve an important role. Almost 40% of democratic voters chose to vote for him. To discount 40% of your party is crackpot, asking to lose. Again, did we not learn anything from 2016?? Magnanimity, unity, caring for each other in this struggle against the kind of plutarchy and criminal state that Trump has given us.
Great speech by Biden - gentle and respectful to Bernie - pivoting to general election. And for fuck's sake, quoting the Irish poet Seamus Heaney. Oh to have a President who reads, values, and gives us a bit of poetry.

Delegates are handed out proportionately, so Bernie could technically win if you bent over backwards and imagined some scenario in which he miraculously tripled his support with black voters and waved a wand to make Biden supporters disappear. If anyone thinks Bernie has a chance, they can't be looking at FL numbers, which are horrendous for that Castro loving lunatic. And wasn't he supposed to switch over to the Democratic party the last time he ran and he swore that he would?

Bernie only uses the Democratic party to run for president; otherwise he has no use for it.
He'll go back to being an independent shortly after he drops out of the race.

We have no polling places in Washington. Ballots are sent to All voters in the mail for every election, even the most minor off-season referendum. We can either deposit are completed ballot in a u.s. mailbox with the state paying the return postage, or drop them in one of the ballot boxes provided by each county (not always so convenient). They feel the ballot drop off boxes on Election night at 8 p.m., but ballots sent in the mail must be postmarked election day, and can be received up to a week later. It is common enough for folks to wait until election day to mail their ballots, which won't be counted for another day or two.

by Anonymous | reply 375 | March 11, 2020 8:00 AM |
R365, I’m not R265, but I’ll answer you anyway. Caucuses skew very much towards younger voters.
In 2016, Bernie was promoting the idea that all primaries should be caucuses. He also pushed the idea that primaries should be open, that is, that republicans and Independents should be allowed to vote in Democratic primaries. That was to benefit himself, but it harms the Democratic Party because naturally Republicans vote for the weakest, most unelectable candidate. Luckily, some of those states changed back after 2016, but there are still a few. Trump even mentioned that Republicans should go to those open states and vote for an unelectable candidate in the Democratic primary.
Caucuses are very difficult for older voters. They can drag on for hours, people have to pick up their kids from daycare, go home and cook dinner, and tend to their households. It’s very difficult for people to get open ended childcare for an unknown number of hours so they can vote. And the babysitters have to be gone at the same time to vote as well.
And for the elderly it’s worse. They can’t stand for hours. Many don’t even show up because they know they physically can’t do it. Same with disabled people. It’s a barrier the old and infirm can’t get over. It’s essentially a form of “poll tax.” Make such a physical barrier to voting, many people don’t even try to vote, knowing they can’t possibly physically endure the process.
Bernie knows this. He just doesn’t give a shit and thinks that if the most reliable, older voters are eliminated, only young unattached voters, his most devoted supporters, will be allowed to vote by process of elimination. He doesn’t care about stripping people of their right to vote to benefit himself. That’s a feature, not a bug.
Caucuses proved to be such a barrier to voters, that many states have eliminated them since 2016. I can only imagine the ADA must have sued in at least some places. Only a few caucus states are left, which is why Bernie did much worse in some states. When everyone can vote, older people turn out in greater numbers and they don’t support him. Also, historically he did not do well in the South in 2016. So the next states coming up are not good for him.

Poll: Bernie Sanders does well with Latinos — but not in Florida
A new poll shows Latino voters are backing Joe Biden over Sanders in Florida.
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the favorite to win the Latino vote in the Arizona primary next week, as he has in several states so far.
But things are different in Florida, where former Vice President Joe Biden is currently besting Sanders among Latino voters by an 11-point margin, according to a Telemundo poll released Wednesday.
The state polls, which were conducted in early March and sampled hundreds of likely voters, show Sanders is preferred by 47 percent of Latino registered voters in Arizona, a state that Democrats are hoping to turn blue in 2020. Biden, meanwhile, has 40 percent of their support. And in a direct matchup with President Donald Trump, a majority said they would support either Sanders or Biden at rates of 68 percent and 72 percent, respectively.
But in Florida, Biden is preferred by 48 percent of Latino voters in the state, compared to 37 percent who support Sanders. And the poll shows Sanders in a tie with Trump in a direct matchup in a general election. Biden, however, would win in a landslide with Latino voters there, with 58 percent support among Latino voters compared to 38 percent who would back Trump.
It’s not surprising that Sanders is performing poorly among Latino voters in Florida, a swing state, despite successfully capturing the Latino vote in the Nevada, California, and Texas primary contests. Whereas Mexican Americans made up the vast majority of Latino voters in those previous contests, Florida’s Latinos are primarily Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Venezuelan, and they have different political preferences.
Cubans in particular tend to lean more conservative and backed Trump in 2016. Both Cubans and Venezuelans are also wary of socialism, so it follows that Sanders, a self-identified democratic socialist and progressive, isn’t getting their support.
According to the poll, Sanders is performing particularly badly in southeastern Florida, where there is a large Cuban community. Only 19 percent of Cubans — compared to 65 percent of Puerto Ricans — would vote for him in a contest against Trump. And 70 percent of Latino voters in the state said they wouldn’t vote for a candidate who described himself as a socialist.
Cubans are also more satisfied with their health care options than other Latino groups in Florida, a plurality of whom cited health care as their top priority in the poll. That means that Sanders’s signature issue of Medicare-for-all might not resonate with Cubans.
In Arizona, voter preferences play much more in Sanders’s favor. Roughly half of Latino voters say their communities are being “widely persecuted or discriminated against” under Trump and want to “change the direction [he] is leading the nation.”
Sanders has been trying to appeal to Latino voters with a progressive policy platform on immigration, but that isn’t the only issue that motivates them. He has also been speaking to their core interests, including health care and jobs. Starting last summer, he has poured resources into spreading his message, in both Spanish and English, to Latino communities. And he’s hired Latino staff from the grassroots advocacy community and integrated them into every facet of his campaign.

I'll paraphrase this but I'll try to be as complete as possible. I'm in my office and a work colleague (he has to talk to somebody about this--so far, it's the air) is going on about Biden.
-He thinks that Biden has dementia and that the MSM is covering for him. He has gone on and on about Biden's gaffes and not knowing who his wife is versus his sister. He mentions Joe's cursing and calling a woman some name and says that this is a sure sign of dementia. Had Trump done this the MSM would run headlines for weeks.
-Joe's campaign is only allowing him 7 minute speeches because they know that is all that he can handle. The debate is sit down because Biden can't stand long. He believes that Biden will drop out because of mental illness. It's very obvious that he has dementia.
-Trump was right about coronavirus. Other countries now wish that they would have closed their borders too. The United States isn't suffering as badly because of what Trump has done.
There's more. But, I have now tuned him out.

Sure! It's been a some years but look at video tapes of when Biden debated Paul Ryan in this format (made mince meat out him) and there is no need to mention Caribou Barbie--who actually held her own when she went toe to toe with him. Biden had a fabulous day yesterday- beat Bernie handily, brought in strong numbers from demos we need that HRC couldn't get in 2016 and gave a brilliant speech that is perfect for this time and against the raving moron currently in the White House. Seemed humble, extended olive branch to perennial sore loser Burnout and his cult. Perfect time for Bernie to do the simple math and step aside but, of course, he won't. He's as disgusting and delusional as his followers.
Coronavirus really has me down and scared, but at least sane Dems came together to put up a candidate who could actually win in Nov. Bernie would have been George McGovern all over again, losing in embarassing fashion and costing us up and down the ticket. Jim Clyburn is a national hero.

R423 That person is deep into the Trump psychosis, and would never in a million years vote for a Democratic challenger.
Joe's speech last night was one of the best in this election cycle. He's getting better of sticking to what's on the teleprompter and making it seem authentic, like it's coming from his heart. His essential likability is unassailable , despite his slips, which do seem more than just an old stutterer with a lifelong inclination to gaffes.
Main point - he's not got the native distrust and annoyance that many felt about Hillary. Oh, there'll be versions of "Joe sells children out of pizza parlors! He's washed his email server in acid!! Wikileaks says he... says he... um, wait a minute...." The Ukraine stuff about his son is weak, and will just point out the monetary gain the Trump children are gaining.
Joe is Teflon, unlike Hillary. Anything can happen still, but Trump is, and should be, very, very nervous.

I was in high school and college during the 90s and did not have a care in the world. Also remember the huge surplus when Clinton left office in 2001. I strongly believe Hillary could get the country back on track, restore US reputation in the world and unite the country with strong leadership after 4 years of Trump. She would probably easily achieve the same Bill Clinton did in the 90s - unite the country in a time of crisis and prepare the country and economy for a uncertain future of climate change, international crises and shifting economy challenges.

There’s a certain percentage of BernieBros that have never been Democrats, and they think if Bernie can’t win, they would like the country to be destroyed by Trump out of revenge.
This idea has some historical precedence. When Hitler knew he was going to lose WWII, he gave the order to destroy large swaths of Germany, destroying food, roads and anything else the invaders could use to support themselves. He didn’t care about the resulting suffering by the German populace, who would have starved to death. He actually said if Germany lost, that proved they were inferior and deserved to be destroyed. (Luckily, his generals didn’t carry out those orders).
The interesting thing about this situation is that I don’t think Bernie himself wants the country to be destroyed by Trump, it’s his cultist followers. They worship Bernie and think, as Hitler did, that if the U.S. doesn’t elect Bernie, the U. S. deserves to be destroyed because it has proven itself to be inferior and should be destroyed. They don’t care about the resulting suffering to innocent people either.
The irony is that they say their movement is to “save” people, but if they can’t win, they want those same people to have their lives ruined or outright endangered.
We were never going to get those votes no matter who the nominee is. We need to quit pretending those people are Democrats. They aren’t. They’re a third party that has infiltrated the Democratic Party at the invitation of Tom Perez, who invited them in. That level of fixed, extreme belief, with an inability to adapt to new circumstances, or compromise in any way, suggests a form of mental illness that’s unrelated to politics.
by Anonymous | reply 450 | March 11, 2020 2:56 PM |
Rep Clyburn said the debates should be cancelled and to "shut down" the primary and get behind Biden. This is not a way to get voters behind Biden. Millions of people have still not voted and they want their voices heard. Once again we have a coronation of the nominee. The dem establishment wasn't for Biden, but they were afraid Sanders would win the primary and that is the reason they got behind Biden.
by Anonymous | reply 451 | March 11, 2020 3:04 PM |
R451 Biden was very careful last night to "be humble" and not declare it was over prematurely. If Bernie on his own decides to stop, with some "unity agreement" with Biden, that'd be good. Otherwise let it play out. How they handle the inclusion of the Bernie movement into the general election will be telling about the Biden campaign's strategic wisdom and skills.

r4567 Exactly the kind of short-sighted miscalculation that will deliver the election to Trump. 200k Sanders voters in PA, MI and WI voted for Trump in the general election. It’s Over
For Bernie Sanders, for the second consecutive election, “there is just no path to victory.”
RONALD BROWNSTEIN 9:06 AM ET
After two insurgent campaigns that rattled American politics, Bernie Sanders’s dream of becoming the Democratic presidential nominee is effectively over.
Tapping an enormous wave of grassroots energy in both bids for the White House, Sanders galvanized young people, transformed online fundraising, and changed the terms of debate in the Democratic Party on issues ranging from health care to college affordability. But as his defeats last night made clear yet again, his unflinching call for a “political revolution” could not build a coalition broad enough to capture the ultimate prize.
Former Vice President Joe Biden remains well short of the 1,991 delegates needed for a nomination on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention in July. But his resounding victories last night, and his widening delegate lead, prompted even some of Sanders’s ideological allies to question whether the senator from Vermont should continue his campaign.
“Sanders should start thinking through what outlet he has to draw concessions from Biden, and it’s not clear to me that continuing a presidential campaign that does not have a path to victory is one of those options,” says Sean McElwee, a co-founder and the executive director of the liberal research and advocacy group Data for Progress, which has been polling extensively in the primary states. “I think he should … think soberly about the reality. I don’t think there are any states right now he is favored to win.”
Others on the left did not go so far. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which had endorsed Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts before she withdrew, issued a statement urging Sanders to remain in the race at least through this Sunday’s scheduled CNN debate in Phoenix. Robert Reich, a leading liberal economist and a former labor secretary under Bill Clinton, likewise told me Sanders should push forward through the debate.
“People are going to be asking themselves as they watch that debate who is going to be better able to take on Trump one-on-one,” Reich said. “The stampede toward Biden was remarkably fast. That shows that his support is not absolutely steadfast, so it’s at least possible that if his debate performance is very bad on Sunday, Bernie Sanders could have a renaissance.”
But across much of the party, Biden’s triumphs in Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, and Idaho confirmed the message sent by his victories on Super Tuesday: that the question is no longer whether, but when, the former vice president becomes the party’s nominee against Donald Trump.

If Biden can’t keep moderates, he will lose. Biden does not need to be Bernie 2.0. Bernie 1.0 lost being Bernie.
Biden is trying to bring in moderate Republicans who hate Trump. That way, he not only gets votes, he takes them away from Trump.
You may not approve, but taking disenchanted Trump voters away from Trump is how to win. A lot of those people are now registered Independents and Democrats. Swinging the party wildly to the left will drive them out. Along with most of the Biden voters.
Bernie himself is pushing the party to the center by being so uncompromising and extremist. Many Democrats don’t want to vote for Socialism. Socialists need to form their own party.

[quote]It would push him further to the left and win more support.
He doesn't need to do that, and it would hurt him with white suburban women, who don't like Sanders, Warren and AOC.
The things that Biden needs to do now is pick a female running mate and increase his outreach to Latino voters. If he does that, then he will be in good shape going into November. White suburban women were the ones who gave Democrats a resounding victory in 2018 and they will be the deciders in 2020 as well. Harris and Klobuchar are the potential VPs who appeal to this demographic. Stacey Abrams is not appealing to them, and she doesn't have the experience to become president should something happen.

As in last week’s contests, Biden last night dominated among African Americans; led among college-educated white voters; and even topped Sanders, albeit more narrowly, among blue-collar white voters, who had preferred the senator in each of the year’s first four contests. Compounding Sanders’s problem across the country, the young voters who generally preferred him by large margins over Biden consistently represented a smaller share of the total vote than they did four years ago, according to exit polls conducted by Edison Research for a consortium of media organizations.
“If he’s not going to win working-class [white voters], and he’s going to lose [black voters] massively, and the turnout is all with his opponent’s people and not his … there is just no path to victory,” says Tad Devine, who served as a senior strategist for Sanders in 2016 but is unaffiliated with any campaign this year. “It’s just that simple.”
Biden tried to project confidence in his victory speech last night, delivering conspicuously calm and measured remarks focused on the general election. And he offered the kind of conciliatory praise for Sanders that usually comes at the end of a primary race. “We share a common goal, and together we will defeat Donald Trump,” Biden said. “We will defeat him together.” Sanders, meanwhile, spoke volumes about his precarious situation by choosing not to speak at all last night.
While Democratic leaders more or less tolerated Sanders’s continuing his 2016 campaign against Hillary Clinton until June of that year, the party’s desire to beat Trump will likely make it much less forgiving of another extended crusade, Devine told me. “Biden needs the spring and the summer without Bernie,” he said. “I think Bernie is smart enough and reasonable enough to recognize that [it’s irrational] to keep this thing going for the sake of—what?”
Another option for Sanders could be to remain in the race in order to keep attention on the policy issues he cares about, but to mute his criticism of Biden. Jesse Jackson, who endorsed Sanders last weekend, followed that model in the latter stages of the 1988 Democratic primary, which Michael Dukakis ultimately won. Several Democratic operatives, though, say one major difference between 2020 and 1988 could complicate this approach: Sanders’s aggressive network of supporters is unlikely to muffle its criticism of Biden even if the candidate himself does. That could translate into escalating demands for Sanders to quit.
Beyond Democrats’ concerns about Trump, McElwee believes that Sanders will likely face more pressure to cede the field because of the coronavirus outbreak and the new constraints on campaigning. Such concerns prompted both Biden and Sanders to cancel events yesterday.
“Two things that are different about this year than 2016: One is … there are not going to be any races that he has any plausible shot at winning where he is going to be able to rebound,” McElwee told me. “And I think you had a little bit more mood among the electorate and establishment at large [in 2016] that said, ‘Let’s have a guy out there making a moral case.’ At this point … I think the Democratic base is much more terrified of Trump this cycle than last cycle and [is] going to respond less well to a long, drawn-out primary, particularly in the midst of a pandemic.”
The calendar doesn’t offer Sanders any reprieve. Next Tuesday, he must compete in Florida, where polls show him facing a cavernous deficit following his recent comments praising aspects of Fidel Castro’s rule in Cuba; Ohio, where he lost badly in 2016; and Illinois, where the state Democratic leadership has rallied around Biden and polls show the former vice president holding a hefty lead. Only Arizona, with its large Latino population, seems like it could be hospitable to Sanders, but even there the most recent survey found Biden comfortably ahead. Georgia, whose large black population establishes Biden as the clear favorite, follows a week later.

For Sanders, the losses last night were especially stinging because they came mostly in states where he ran well against Clinton four years ago. In that race, Sanders narrowly won the primary in Michigan; captured about two-thirds of the vote or more in Idaho, North Dakota, and Washington (where the elections were held as caucuses last time); and finished only 0.2 percentage points behind Clinton in Missouri. Only in Mississippi was he routed.
This time, though, Sanders continued to struggle to expand his support beyond the enthusiastic base that has filled his arena-size rallies and swelled his fundraising totals. Even at the outset of voting this year—when Sanders finished in a virtual tie for first place in Iowa and then won the subsequent contests in New Hampshire and Nevada—he attracted only between one-fourth and one-third of the total vote.
The big question for Sanders at that point was whether he could add to his coalition once the race consolidated, which it did with stunning speed when both former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota ended their candidacies and endorsed Biden just before Super Tuesday. Warren followed them off the field that Wednesday, after failing to win a single state the night before.
So far, Sanders, in key states, has failed to add to his base. On Super Tuesday, he exceeded 37 percent of the vote only in his home state of Vermont. In a two-person race last night, he drew only about 37 percent in Michigan, 35 percent in Missouri, about 33 percent in Washington, and an anemic 15 percent in Mississippi. Only in the smaller contests of Idaho (which he lost) and North Dakota (which he won) did Sanders cross 40 percent of the vote.
Demographic patterns largely followed the grooves cut on Super Tuesday. Biden ran up significant margins among college-educated white voters in Missouri and Mississippi, and carried them more narrowly in Michigan, a state where Sanders posted a double-digit advantage among them in 2016. Preliminary exit results also showed Biden winning those voters in Washington. Starting on Super Tuesday, Biden has won white-collar white voters in 13 of the 16 states in which exit polls have been conducted.
Biden last night also maintained his substantial advantage among African American voters. He won the support of nearly nine in 10 of them in Mississippi. As in 2016, Sanders has run more competitively among black voters outside the South. But even so, the exit polls last night found Biden winning about two-thirds of them in Missouri and Michigan, almost exactly matching Clinton’s performance last time. Biden has carried African Americans in every state with enough of these voters to measure in an exit poll.
Perhaps most disappointing for Sanders, the exit polls in Missouri and Michigan found Biden also narrowly winning the support of white voters without a college degree. (Not enough of them voted in Mississippi for the exit poll to record their preferences.) The preliminary exit results also showed Biden winning them by a slim margin in Washington.
Sanders carried non-college-educated white voters in Missouri and Michigan last time (no 2016 exit poll was conducted in Washington), and he targeted them this year by lashing Biden over his support for free-trade agreements and his earlier openness to cutting Social Security as part of a “grand bargain” with Republicans to reduce the deficit. Since Super Tuesday, Biden has carried blue-collar white voters in 12 of the 16 states in which exit polls were conducted (assuming his lead in Washington survives the final exit-poll revisions).
The sweep of Biden’s victory last night was best captured in the Detroit metro area. He beat Sanders by about 20 percentage points both in Wayne County, which includes heavily African American Detroit, and Oakland County, a white-collar suburb that has moved toward the Democrats in recent years. He also beat Sanders by about 17 points in Macomb County, the home of white, blue-collar “Reagan Democrats” who have drifted toward the GOP.

One final headwind battered Sanders. In a repeat of Super Tuesday, Biden dominated among voters who self-identified as Democrats in Missouri, Michigan, and Mississippi alike, and he carried them more narrowly in Washington.
After losing partisan Democrats badly in his 2016 run, Sanders had performed more competitively among them in the first contests this year. But at his moment of greatest triumph this cycle, after winning New Hampshire and Nevada, he sent a series of belligerent signals to the party. Among them: insisting he is running against “the Democratic establishment,” renouncing any general-election help from the billionaire Michael Bloomberg, and declaring that he would only pick a vice president who supports Medicare for All.
These factors likely contributed to Biden’s winning streak: He’s now won self-identified Democrats in every state with an exit poll since Super Tuesday, save for Vermont, California, and Colorado.
“The other flawed theory of this [Sanders] campaign is that you can win the nomination of a major political party by running against that political party,” Adrian Hemond, a Democratic consultant in Michigan, told me. “Democratic activists have invested the last 25, 30, 40 years of their lives in the party, and he was saying this was all bullshit. How’s that supposed to work?’”
On Tuesday, at least, the answer was that it didn’t work. Now, at 78, with his second campaign facing a lower ceiling of support than his first, Sanders and his leagues of ardent supporters are confronting the near-certainty that after years of organizing and struggle, he will never conquer the Democratic Party as its presidential nominee.

R474 White suburban college-educated voters formed the core of Warren's base. Polling as of Jan 2020 show that 56% of Americans support Medicare for All... higher numbers for a public option. Many of the anti-Bernie posters here on DL are to the right of where most Americans are. Again, the skill with which Biden is able to bring the party together is important. If he's able to bring the party together, it will be a huge asset in establishing his principal message in the fall... he can "heal" and unite the country. Even on a small scale of a backwater bulletin board like DL, we should support that effort.
Also, over 30% of Dems have voted for Bernie. They need to be respected and invited in, not told to shut up and take it.

R479 Lots of revisionist history and partisan filters in that analysis. For example, there's not way to understand Trump other than he did run against the Republican party... successfully. Bernie and Trump had a lot in common... only the Democratic party was more strategic in its response. Does that mean success in Nov? We'll see.

Also, the person posting the M4A poll didn't say that support for M4A is unchanged in the last year yet opposition to it has grown slightly. The other thing to note is that in this year's poll, Kaiser left out the questions that showed that support for M4A drops when people are told that taxes will increase, loss of private insurance etc. Instead they asked the questions more vaguely like 'do you expect taxes to increase' and do not show if people think that is good or bad. So if 80% think taxes will increase under M4A there is no way to gauge how much of that 80% favors a tax increase.

R480, democracy means the majority wins and the non-majority does have to shut up and take it.
What Bernie supporters want is not democracy. They want the losers to win and the majority to shut up and take it. We’ve had enough of that from Trump and don’t need it from Socialists who don’t identify as Democrats, like the Democratic party or anything it stands for, or have any respect for the Democrats in the Democratic Party who have spent their lives voting for Democratic ideals in the Democratic Party.
Socialism is a completely different and separate form of government and the Bernie-centric version has nothing in common with the Democratic Party. Bernie just wants to use the Democratic Party to undermine the Democratic Party, insult its members and attack the Democratic candidates and eventual nominee.
Bernie wants to have a debate with Biden, knowing he (Bernie) will lose the nomination, so he can insult Biden and alienate voters on the fence, and help Trump. He wants to perform for Trump campaign ads. That’s disgusting. He might as well endorse Trump. He wants to act as a spoiler because he can’t win.
Form a Socialist party and have any rules you want and run anybody you want. Socialists do not agree with the Democratic Party platform anyway, many will never vote for Biden or any Democratic nominee. Run your own candidate.

Bernie haters here need to give it a rest. You are sounding like Trump deplorables - mean and cranky old farts. (I am a 69 year old white guy who did not vote for Bernie).
Sander's speech was masterful politics. Many of his supporters (over 30% of Democratic voters in primaries) are angry and disappointed. In 2016, 200k Sanders voters in PA, MI and WI voted for Trump, essentially giving him the election. That absolutely can't happen in 2020. He graciously pitched a high slow ball right over the plate for Joe... tell us the answer to these questions on Sunday. Essentially given him an open book final, eh? It's up to Biden and his campaign to craft a message now... this is the smartest was to build a coalition. Bernie saying today "ok, I lose, you win" and walking would only further distanced his supporters WHO ARE 30% OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
Time for Joe to show us how smart he really is.

If you look at the results at R515, there’s a lot of votes for candidates that dropped out. Must be early voting.
That just shows, moderate candidates dropping out and endorsing Biden turned the tide. That primary moderate vote was split among Biden, Buttigieg, Bloomberg, Klobuchar. If it was held with live-only votes today, Biden would be beating Bernie like a drum. And even with hundreds of thousands of moderate votes split away, he’s still neck and neck with Bernie.

The only reason why the Sanders voters who went third party or Trump in 2016 matter is because many more moderates and POC just stayed home. That's not going to happen this time.
And this time around the 70% is pretty sick of the shit being pulled by the 30%.

Democrats have to have somewhere to go between fascism (Trump) and Socialism (Bernie).

R521, No, you’re assuming Bernie will be gentlemanly and have a civil discussion with Biden at the debate. No he won’t. He could have a CNN Town Hall with Biden if he wanted to do that, at any time along the campaign trail.
Bernie doesn’t need to go to a debate stage and bash Biden and claim Democrats are Republicans and Democrats are against the working man, and Biden hates the poor, or never heard of them his entire life and needs Bernie to inform him that the poor need help, because Biden is some entitled billionaire living in an ivory tower. That’s bullshit.
Every time Bernie goes on television he says the same thing: that if he wasn’t around, Democrats would be the enemy of the poor and downtrodden. That is ridiculous.
Democrats fought for the minimum wage, unions, Medicare, Social Security, welfare, unemployment insurance, Medicaid, OSHA, and every bit of social safety net there is while Republicans fought it tooth and nail and still fight it. And every thing the Democrats ever achieved was over the prostrate dead bodies of Republicans.
So Bernie claiming Biden wouldn’t do one damn thing to help the underprivileged if Bernie wasn’t there to make him, is insulting as hell. It’s the Democratic Party, not the Republican Party. Why doesn’t Bernie attack Republicans if he wants to help the poor? They’re the enemy of the poor, not Democrats. Stop attacking Democrats and claiming they don’t care about the poor. History does not back that up. If he really wanted to help instead of just stirring up shit, he’d attack Trump.
Bernie needs to quit using up all the oxygen in the room talking about himself so we can hear about foreign policy and Corona virus. Neither are being discussed enough considering what a big deal they are. Domestic economic policy isn’t the only thing that exists.

I heard a commentator last night on CNN say the primary debates matter more than the presidential debates because by the time the presidential debates are held, the mind is made up. The presidential debates are confirmatory, for the most part, unless someone does something self destructive. I wonder if that isn't the situation with this last, final primary debate? Seems to me the matter is settled. I think Bernie knows it. He's trying to salvage some element of his platform but his remarks suggest he knows what he's offering is not what a majority wants. However, fairly, he points to a minority with whom he is resonant and I don't think he's wrong to try to preserve some of his platform reflecting their concerns.

[quote]Joe needs to stay calm and quiet on Sunday.
He must be presidential. He must look and come across as he did last evening. He must lead the conversation/discussion and always lead it back to Trump and respectfully ignore and be condescending towards Sanders.
Who is running this debate and who are the moderators?

I think the lack of an audience will probably help with either of them getting shouty.

[quote]Biden is trying to bring in moderate Republicans who hate Trump.
[quote]Bernie himself is pushing the party to the center by being so uncompromising and extremist. Many Democrats don’t want to vote for Socialism. Socialists need to form their own party.
Like it or not, many in the democratic party want it moved to the left. Not as much as the Sanders fringe, but many want REAL change. And they want the appeasement of Republicans to stop.
You can keep demonizing it as "socialism" all you want, but it's not going to stop the number of people who are disenchanted with the way the government bends over for the rich at the expense of the poor from growing.
We've played "to win" before. We've bent over backwards trying to appease those moderate Republicans. And we know where this road leads. The Republicans get absolved of all their dirty behavior time and time again in the interest of wanting to be "bipartisian".
The democrats keep shitting on members of their own party at the expense of a party that doesn't give two craps about them and certainly wouldn't do the same in return.

Timing is everything R533
While there are plenty of people who have gotten left behind in the new knowledge economy and the top 15%-20% seems to have put up a moat around affluence, the fact remains that after four years of Trump what more people want is four years of calm. If that means seemingly setting the clock back to 2016, so be it. They just don't want another angry New Yorker creating drama every single day.
Bernie did accomplish a lot. Many ideas, like M4A, that were once considered the domain of crackpots are now mainstream. That's a huge achievement.

[quote]what more people want is four years of calm. If that means seemingly setting the clock back to 2016, so be it.
To where the Republicans were obstructing Obama at every turn? They vowed to make him a one term President the day he was elected . They denied him a pick for the Supreme Court. They went so far as to say he wasn't even a citizen of this country.
As much as I loathe the Sanders "My high or the highway" crap, I equally loathe the "I just want peace or normalcy" bullshit. This era of where Republicans and Democrats worked happily hand in hand without any controversy has not existed for a long, long time. It's a fantasy, and there's too much to deal with right now to waste time projecting tall tales.
by Anonymous | reply 535 | March 11, 2020 10:52 PM |
Yes R535
The nonsense that was going on in 2016 looks like an era of calm and normality after four years of Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 536 | March 11, 2020 10:58 PM |
DL is always Fantasy Island when it comes to politics though.
Bernie Bros can't see why people don't want revolution after four years of insanity,
Hillary Stans can't accept that, right or wrong, lots of people who otherwise voted for Democrats hated her. Period. It doesn't matter why they hated her and if any of those reasons were valid or if all of them were grossly injust and unfair. They did and they decided that a failed reality TV show host was a better choice for president as a result.

The Week Bernie Sanders Realized He Was Losing
Interviews with nearly two dozen aides, allies, and progressive operatives reveal a campaign struggling to reconcile reality with the emotions of a movement that simply fell short.
BURLINGTON, Vermont — The hard reality of Tuesday night wasn’t losing.
And he did lose. He lost Idaho. He lost Missouri. He lost Mississippi so badly that he may only barely pick up delegates. And he lost Michigan, the state that revived his first presidential campaign four years ago. The hard reality, evident days earlier, was much tougher to accept.
You could see it last week, when his motorcade arrived for a rally at the fairgrounds in Salt Lake City, and all they could do was watch as a seven-person field rapidly shrunk to a two-man race, with candidates flying in secret to line up behind Joe Biden in Dallas. As the news broke, a senior aide stood in the fairgrounds parking lot near a line of SUVs, visibly shaking with nerves.
You saw it back in his Washington headquarters, where staffers reassured themselves by digging back in, as if by muscle memory, to an old trench: “Did we really think they were going to let us have it?” they told one another. You saw it after Super Tuesday, a loss across 10 states, when some senior aides began to worry that Biden wouldn’t even show up to the next debate simply because he wouldn’t have to. And even as the campaign made a hard last play for Michigan, some aides said they could see “the writing on the wall” — and wondered if the boss did too.
Bernie Sanders promised a singular and unprecedented ability to bring young and working-class people into the political process, an antidote to the “same old, same old status quo,” a campaign of “energy and excitement.” But it was Joe Biden, not Bernie Sanders, who was expanding the electorate. It was Joe Biden who was turning nonvoters into new voters. Everyone knew who Bernie Sanders was. The other guy was just getting more votes — and how could he explain that?
A few days ago, when reporters asked in Phoenix, he couldn’t.

If so many people wanted such a big change in the Democratic party, why the fuck aren't they turning out to vote or getting involved at the local level?
Are these the same people who bitch that they've been working somewhere for a whole year and can't understand why they aren't the CEO yet?
Stop whining, bernvictims! Stop whing on the internet and GTFO and WORK! Shit posting on social media is NOT fucking work!
Find a local candidate who has your values and get involved in the campaign. Hand out flyers, organize meetings for like minded people and come up with a plan to elect AT A LOCAL LEVEL the people you want.
This means hosting fund raisers, knocking on doors, calling people, participating in debates, Town Halls and getting out of your fucking basement!
Right now, the MAJORITY of the Democratic party isn't buying what shoutyspitty is selling. Part of that is him. Part of that is the endless whining and entitlement of bernvictims.
Change only comes about through blood, sweat and tears. Not stomping your feet and pouting. Ask John Lewis about that sometime, why don't you?

[quote]Warren would have made a much better choice than either of these fossils.
No, she wouldn't have--and, I like Elizabeth too. Warren's proposals were too drastic of a shift. But, that's one of the things I liked about her. I loved her quote (paraphrase); "I don't understand why people run for president if they're unwilling to go big." Well, she went big and it did not work for her. However, I believe that many of her ideas could be massaged and/or scaled to such a point that they could pass. I also LOVED Warren's energy! Of all of the candidates she came across to me as the one who loved meeting all of the people and was genuinely having fun!
But, this is another mystery; Warren basically wants the same thing as Bernie. Yet, she was crucified and Bernie is still around being a pain in the ass.

This is an interesting bit from the BuzzFeed piece at R559 and hope that Bernie may campaign for Biden for real
[quote] Meanwhile, a small group of senior aides had been pushing Sanders for months to go harder on Biden. The problem: Sanders actually liked him. Personally, they got along better than he ever did with Hillary Clinton, aides have said. (The former vice president falls into an exclusive category for the Vermont senator: the people who were nice to Sanders before he mattered, as two aides put it recently.) Back in January, it was the candidate’s decision to personally apologize to Biden after one of his surrogates, Zephyr Teachout, wrote an op-ed about Biden’s “corruption problem.”

Going by fivethirtyeight projections for March 17, when AZ, FL,IL and OH have their primaries, those under-30 urban Bernie supporters better start sucking up to African Americans and union people, maybe elbow-bumping and handing out (using gloves) stickers and flyers in person instead of coming here to DL and railing in all-caps. The AZ folk can sub in as assisted-living care employees and fill in the ballots while their charges aren't paying attention.

The Biden campaign didn't plan on @realDonaldTrump speaking on eve of @JoeBiden's coronavirus speech tomorrow when they scheduled it. But it ends up playing into what they had set up as a "presidential moment" and clear contrast
