Pres Bone Spurs is amping up the racism. This is going to get uglier (we all knew it would) but this thing doesn't have a bottom. Who knows where he will go if he is losing, and losing badly, in Oct 2020.

by Anonymousreply 5July 28, 2019 6:26 PM

Jerry Nadler on Trump's attacks on Elijah Cummings: "The president is as he usually is or often is, disgusting and racist. He makes these charges with no base at all. And they are designed to distract attention from the very serious allegations about his conduct."

by Anonymousreply 7July 28, 2019 6:33 PM

R5 Exactly - that's what I worry about. I'd rather force him out late this year than have him down 20 points nationally next fall and see him try and do something drastic. We already know he's a whackjob who thinks we should be able to use nuclear weapons.

by Anonymousreply 8July 28, 2019 6:36 PM

FCI, I am gonna attempt to utilize your participation for as long as this thread stays accessible.

John Heilemann did a segment on MSNBC on Friday where he discussed how much damage Trump can do in 2020, even if he loses the election by a landslide. He used an example of how the Democratic candidate could comfortably win Vermont, yet Trump would tweet how he "won in a landslide", his supporters across the country would believe it, and it would lead to mass hysteria and possibly violence. Trump wins no matter what. Did you or anybody else catch that segment?

by Anonymousreply 9July 28, 2019 6:37 PM

While I trust Nancy and I think there are things she knows we don't but I think the only way to react to his flagrant lying and crimes is at least open an impeachment inquiry so we can get as much as possible.

I'm pissed a Mueller over his testimony. He acted a bit petulant and he looked fucking feeble but he clearly reiterated Pres Bone Spurs would/could be charged with Obstruction after his term ends. He colluded (I know they couldn't prove intent but he colluded) and he stated clearly he lied under oath.

My friends said this is the craziest time they can ever remember in DC.

by Anonymousreply 10July 28, 2019 6:37 PM

r9 I did not because I was disappointed Nicolle wasn't on and even though I adore John H, I have so much going on I didn't watch. Nicolle's shows have been chilling and mimic the general feeling I get from my friends in DC. They are freaking out. They feel democracy slipping away while the GOP fiddles. I know it is easy and easily a Russian thing to want everyone to bash the Dems for not "doing enough" whatever that means but the pressure needs to be squarely on the necks of the GOP.

by Anonymousreply 11July 28, 2019 6:40 PM

r10 what is the point? He's ignoring subpoenas. His Justice Department with Barr isn't going to do anything against him. The Senate will never even hold an impeachment vote with McConnell at the helm. He might be impeached, but he won't be removed from office, which only the Senate can do. It doesn't seem to matter what horrible things he's done because the 30% of the electorate that will vote for him no matter what are also like him and assume everyone else is, too. Could any new information be brought out that would be scandalous to force him to resign? I can't think of anything. He's weathered huge controversies that would have taken down any normal presidency.

by Anonymousreply 12July 28, 2019 6:42 PM

Okay, Muriel (or whomever runs DL): Please don't take this thread subscription only, because we have insiders that aren't subscribers that give us really, really good information. But if this thread is going to go subscription only, then let people boost others to subscriber status - you know, like giving gold status over on Reddit. (I haven't been on reddit for years; I left because of the racists. But I used to buy gold all the time and gift people who were particularly helpful/insightful).

by Anonymousreply 13July 28, 2019 6:44 PM

[quote]The Senate will never even hold an impeachment vote with McConnell at the helm.

McConnell can do everything to ensure that Trump isn't convicted, but holding the trial is a constitutional mandate.

This is the craziest thing we've seen in DC since Teapot Dome.

Trump is Teapot and Watergate rolled together, with all of the 1930s conspiracies rolled into one. The only thing we're missing is the analog for the Pumpkin Papers to prove he's an owned and operated asset of Russia.

Frustrating that people don't understand that part, R14

And in the meantime, we need to keep pointing out just how corrupt McConnell is.

by Anonymousreply 18July 28, 2019 6:50 PM

r14 the point is that there's no way in hell a super majority would vote to convict him in the Senate. They have abrogated their duties in naked pursuit of power.

r15 is perfectly correct to be concerned without being a concern troll. I wonder ho long this thread will remain open before paywalled.

Anyhoo, Nixon was never impeached. The investigation was MORE than enough.

Same with Trumpkin.

That is why Nancy, Jerry and Adam are being so ginger about it.

by Anonymousreply 22July 28, 2019 6:56 PM

I agree, R22. It was the televised Watergate hearings that changed public perception, which in turn forced a Republican delegation to pay a visit to Nixon and let him know he no longer had their support. He resigned the next day.

Here is a link to a short L.A. Times Opinion piece, published yesterday, in which a couple of Letters to the Editor from the Watergate era are presented. The only notable difference between then and now, really, is the level of literacy.

Trump wins no matter what. Did you or anybody else catch that segment?

Unless you're talking about a different segment, I thought they said something more along the lines of "What happens if, suddenly, with Russian interference, Trump "wins" Vermont and Vermont, realizing that something illegal happened, refuses to certify the vote? What if that happens in multiple states?"

I wonder if the paywall kicks in when a thread reaches a certain post threshold/hour or something. So, the more popular threads will get paywalled. Maybe we should pace ourselves or something.

Can't a state like California create a mandate that a candidate must turn over their taxes in order to appear on the ballot and/or receive their electoral votes?

R25 There's a fine line here. Requiring federal taxes may get this rejected by the Supreme Court - it's out of scope for any State Secretary of State to establish.

But, I think each State can establish a requirement for a morals and ethics clause, like the federal government's FICO (Foreign Influence and Corruption) standard. Each candidate filing application for ballot access would have to demonstrate there are no ethical concerns regarding their reputation and finances to foreign influence and control. History of bankruptcy, foreign investments in countries hostile to the US could legitimately be defended for rejecting a ballot access request.

by Anonymousreply 27July 28, 2019 7:38 PM

r24 That is what my friends fear. They said I would love and hate being in DC at this time. They say there is never a dull moment and rumors flying around left and right. They say it is very scary but the activity level of those trying to figure this out is unprecedented.

I'd suggest Muriel disable the thread and post indexing on the internet. That would reduce the trolling.

by Anonymousreply 34July 28, 2019 8:02 PM

Paying $1.50 will not stop trolls. They pay it once and have open season on us. They can overrun the site during peak times and on subscription only threads. The last Mueller thread died when it became subscription only. Look how many have already posted here since this one isn't. I say when this one becomes subscription only, start another Mueller thread then.

by Anonymousreply 35July 28, 2019 8:09 PM

[quote]I say when this one becomes subscription only, start another Mueller thread then.

Which is against the rules, so then Muriel might just redline posters who start new threads or she might delete them all immediately, like the Richard Madden threads.

The Richard Madden threads became pay threads, so the guys there did several different attempts to slide past Muriel, but she caught them and then banned all of the threads about RM.

Go ahead. Try!

Congressman John Ratcliffe's attack dog tactics at the Mueller hearing worked -- Trump today named him director of national intelligence to replace Dan Coats.

Odd, since median income in Ratcliffe’s district is lower than Elijah Cummings’ district – you'd think Trump would want him to clean up his home district before moving to another job.

Baltimore Sun responds to TRump in an editorial:

Finally, while we would not sink to name-calling in the Trumpian manner — or ruefully point out that he failed to spell the congressman’s name correctly (it’s Cummings, not Cumming) — we would tell the most dishonest man to ever occupy the Oval Office, the mocker of war heroes, the gleeful grabber of women’s private parts, the serial bankrupter of businesses, the useful idiot of Vladimir Putin and the guy who insisted there are “good people” among murderous neo-Nazis that he’s still not fooling most Americans into believing he’s even slightly competent in his current post. Or that he possesses a scintilla of integrity. Better to have some vermin living in your neighborhood than to be one.

by Anonymousreply 45July 28, 2019 9:48 PM

I bet there are rats behind his Trump International Hotel in Wash DC. The alleys behind restaurants in DC are full of them. It's why some of the good restaurants move to the suburbs.

by Anonymousreply 46July 28, 2019 9:54 PM

how much power does the DNI have? I mean Ratcliffe is a horrific choice but how much could he interfere with the FBI, NSA and CIA? We'll just have to rely on those agencies and the DNI is considered lost now

by Anonymousreply 47July 28, 2019 10:47 PM

From listening to Wray during his testimony last week, the FBI might be lost, too. Wonder when he's going to get back to Congress on that counterintelligence investigation against Trump that he seemed not to know any details about. I'm sure he's working as quickly as he can to let Congress know if Trump is a treasonous traitor.

by Anonymousreply 48July 28, 2019 11:17 PM

R46 Look at a map. The Trump Hotel is also the building for DC's Old Post Office Pavillion. It's bounded by Constitution Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue on the South and North, 12th and 10th street on the west and east. There's a single service road.

Yes, there are rats in DC and not just the elected kind. It's a flood plain region which makes waste management a serious issue. What you don't see, though, are overflowing dumpsters for that reason. And unlike your 1980s view of DC, we have had a net increase of 40% in new restaurants since 2010. That's with a population increase of 7.5% during the same period and 23% since 2000.

by Anonymousreply 49July 28, 2019 11:21 PM

It's a coup d'etat in slow motion. Every intention is to cheat again for the 2020 election. The Republicans are not even denying the welcoming of Putin's help. If Trump still loses, he will claim results are tainted and fake, and will refuse to leave office. Barr, McConnell, Graham, etc., all back him up. He will declare courts opposing his moves as null and void. He'll control the Federal Marshal Service. There's your kleptocracy with DJT fully in charge and further beholden to Putin.

The masses can't leave texting on their cell phones long enough to pay attention, let alone hit the streets in protest. Corporate marketing dictates what they do.

by Anonymousreply 50July 28, 2019 11:52 PM

Rethuglicans don't GAF about election meddling by the fucking Russians. Why would they when they benefit?

Since it's obviously ok to do now, someone needs to ask the Chinese to help out the Democrats.

See how that works, Moscow Mitch? Once you get your shriveled dick handed to you, election security will suddenly become a priority.

That hateful fossil needs to be buried in a landfill.

by Anonymousreply 51July 29, 2019 12:26 AM

I just hope the #MoscowMitch label persists. It was heavily featured on Friday/Saturday but today not so much as Trump's racist attack on Cummings & Baltimore has taken over coverage. The Democratic debate this week will likely push it further out of the way.

I hope someone at CNN asks the candidates about McConnell. I did like how the MSNBC people brought him up once during the first debate

by Anonymousreply 52July 29, 2019 12:39 AM

There was a serviceable french pub, Au Pied du Cochon, in Georgetown that closed then opened the absolutely awful Yves Bistro inside a shopping center. It was possibly the most fun I've had writing a bad restaurant review.

It was much less fun being sick for the next few days.

L'Auberge Chez Francois has indeed been in Great Falls for more than 40 years and La Chaumiere is right where it's been in Georgetown, across the street from the Four Seasons since Watergate.

How is McConnell going to hold his seat with a 30% approval rating in his state?

by Anonymousreply 60July 29, 2019 3:35 AM

R60 Russian voting machine hacking.

by Anonymousreply 61July 29, 2019 3:40 AM

R60. It’s Kentucky. You got that party, right? He could fuck a goat in the middle of downtown Louisville and they’d cheer him for sticking it to Nancy Pelosi.

They’re just stupid. It’s why I don’t visit relatives there, ever. They’re the twisted combination of stupid, evil and venal. They always had horrible things to say about my mother for “not being a good Christian woman”. She was Catholic. They abhorred our living in such sin and abomination. We lived in suburban St Louis in the 1960s which was about as white as a tube of Pepsodent. They’d try to get each of us to go their snake handler church and then ask if we had any money they could “give to the church”

Picture a state filled with Mr. Haney clones from “Green Acres”. That’s Kentucky.

I understand that Kentucky is full of ignorant idiots. But, why is his approval rating only 30% right now with those exact same idiots? And, why would they vote for him if they disapprove of him to the tune of 70%? He's giving Trump everything he wants right now and only 30% support him. What makes them turn around on election day and say, "Hate him. He sucks. I disapprove. Here's my vote!" It makes no sense at all, even for Kentucky.

by Anonymousreply 65July 29, 2019 6:08 AM

R65 because McConnell and other repubs convince their constituents that they can't get anything done due to those partisan Democrats! and the dumbasses believe it. Damage him before he can get in there and damage us. And the same with Nunes. He's a slimy shift POS and he needs to get wrecked so he won't get near the CIA.

I have to believe that our Intel people are protecting us and themselves in spite of the filth that is being tracked into the government by Trump and his followers. And another thing. I have said this before. Trump is a Puppet. A Clown He stands in the spotlight acting out, but someone is whispering in his ear, someone is pulling the strings.

There is a lot going on that the media is not covering. They keep chasing Shiny objects that Trump waves in their faces. Yes, cover his nasty remarks about Baltimore, racism, etc. But don't milk it repeatedly. WTF is there no attention given to McConnell?

Since Trump keeps bypassing public hearings and Senate confirmation of his appointees by making they all "acting" then the Media needs to vet them. The media needs to pretend they're covering Benghazi! or Emails! and go after these motherfuckers.

by Anonymousreply 89July 29, 2019 4:13 PM

R89 I thought about that. Maybe it depends on what kind of deals they can cut with Biden. After all. Biden is definitely a known entity to world leaders. He made Foreign Policy his specialty over the years and he really wanted to be Secretary of State in an Obama administration.

In fact Rumor has it that when his name first came up, he thought it was for that job. He'd lobbied hard for it even though his close friend John Kerry expected to get it. As much as his speaking style gets on my nerves, Kerry is a classy guy who not only stepped aside for Hillary, but helped her all he could once she became SoS.

Biden, OTOH always felt threatened by her in that job. He felt she overshadowed him, until finally Obama, early in his Presidency told Joe his portfolio would be helping to sell the domestic agenda, and to advise. Then of course, they created an image, of "celebrity" around Uncle Joe, really to help sell the Obama agenda, but it also pacified him.

I have close friends who are political consultants. Very high up, veterans of various political campaigns. etc. Lots of good gossip once in a while. No. Nothing so far, except Biden's internal campaign is in disarray and the woman he hired from Bernie's campaign is a huge fuck up who offends a lot of people.

Warren is still hiring. She can't afford some of the top tier people but she has a great staff, they're a happy gang, and they work hard. Some of my friends are working for her and for HArris and have only great things to say. My friends want revenge for Hillary. Many of them don't like Biden. He was not very helpful in 2016.

by Anonymousreply 90July 29, 2019 4:24 PM

The racist shit is spot on what everyone racist or racist adjacent want to hear. I don't know who is advising him on what exactly to say (he isn't smart enough to come up with a lot of this) but this is not someone just popping off at the mouth. This is intentional and designed to elicit a response from his deplorables and beyond (probably those who don't vote). He is betting on the latter group to be energized to vote.

Expect more and worse of this sick shit. I believe it won't work and will backfire. He hasn't learned (due to his malignant narcissism) he is overexposing himself. In entertainment, which is all he knows, that is not smart.

by Anonymousreply 92July 29, 2019 5:08 PM

R89 that's not a crazy idea to ponder. After 2016, I think a few of us thought the same thing. If Put Put would then swing it the other way for 2020, perhaps elevating a Democratic candidate that would cause controversy, and have them win...

Because ultimately what he wants is chaos and distrust in our voting and Democratic principles in general.

Hunt him down and roast his ass for Thanksgiving, Nancy. This turkey shoot should be easy. We've got every asshole in the country in one place now, we know their names. Vote them out, shun them, shame them, make them understand that this is not acceptable. Yeah, we're haters and we hate you, but we're not going to deport you or threaten to deport you. If we see a drop in the polls for his numbers, this may be way. Anyone who has ever worked in research knows that people lie in surveys and polls all the time.

by Anonymousreply 105July 29, 2019 7:34 PM

It gets scarier each day as trump replaces departing people with even more heinous and corrupt individuals. This is happening in all departments. Good people are leaving and are replaced by loyalists who are destroying our government from within.

I can't imagine what this country will look like if they succeed in their mission to destroy the progressive agenda. It's not what the majority wants to happen, the 2020 elections are crucial. To think that the trump gang cheat to win makes this a particularly dangerous time.

It's ironic that liberals anguish when corrupt conservatives are in power who are fomenting racism and hate while enriching themselves at the expense of democracy.

It confounds me that conservatives anguish when liberals are in power working to ensure equality, education, peace, environmental and consumer protections, and essential human rights, like health care.

WTF is wrong with conservatives? For people who claim to be religious they're on the side of Satan and not and God I recognize.

The real problem is the right wing media selling the narrative that Trump won legitimately and that it was all the fault of Hillary and the Democratic Party. It's pretty much official that Russia fucked with the 2016 election and the GOP refuses to do anything about it to prevent it from happening again, because they benefit from that outside act of terror. And everyone, including the Democratic Party, is pussyfooting around the issue, because nobody wants to rock the boat.

The fact is that Trump is illegitimate. The Senate is illegitimate because of Russian intrusion that benefitted Trump and the GOP/Senate in the first place. As a result every single judge appointment is illegitimate.

[quote] R89: Wouldnt it be karmic if Putin, already having benefited from Trump, abandons him in 2020 and throws him to the wolves.

I think it is quite possible that Putin will do exactly this. He might have a cache of emails from the Trump Organisation and the Republican National Committee, and he might just release them at some point. His goal is to keep his toady on a short leash, for the purposes of screwing with us. He just might decide the best way to cause divisiveness here is to reveal what he’s done. It might be as simple as a release of a recording of their private conversations. Trump thinks they’re friends and is too stupid to think he was taped, which of course he was.

by Anonymousreply 132July 30, 2019 3:03 AM

R132. I agree. Chaos is what serves Putin. But a useful idiot is handy, unless it looks like he might not survive impeachment and create a whole institution hostile to Russia.

That’s when he tilts the table and dumps Trumps.

by Anonymousreply 133July 30, 2019 4:31 AM

R132, R133... I agree with you both but only to a point... Putin truly is an evil genius, and is in it for the long game. It's to his advantage to keep Trump in to 2024, and then some... We know Trump's joke fantasy of serving more than two terms isn't a joke at all, and as long as Putin can keep him there he's useful. At some point Trump will no longer be useful and Putin will turn on him. But I think we've got a long way to go.... (which is why this needs to be stopped ASAP - like tomorrow!).

by Anonymousreply 134July 30, 2019 6:01 AM

I believe at this point, Trump has to be impeached! Even if he doesn't "win" 2020, he has no intention of leaving the right house. He will cause his minions to riot. So he has to be sent out before this can happen.

by Anonymousreply 135July 30, 2019 6:02 AM

^^the White House. I'm so tired. sorry guys.

by Anonymousreply 136July 30, 2019 6:03 AM

Putin's got a few problems to deal with right now because the demonstrators and dissidents are not going to stop and you can't poison everyone. OTOH, Amerixa isn't the only country feeling Putin's treachery. And he & his oligarchs have enough money to buy off the right guys in every country to make sure he is in control. So anyone who thinks a foreign country will interfere in our elections on behalf of the Democrats is mistaken. Maybe Biden might be the only one, because he isn't that bright and he is always willing to compromise. But he is brighter than Trump by a mile.

by Anonymousreply 137July 30, 2019 10:11 AM

I think we have finally drawn blood. McConnell is rattled. WE cannot let up. We need to keep the pressure on him. We have to. I'd bet that right now he is convincing the White House and his RUssian handlers that they have to pass some kind of legislation and he will do all he can to weaken it but it has to happen. Then it will not be enforced. That's how they will deal with it. Pass a weakened version, then don't enforce it. Because once the legislation is passed, a separate bill has to "enable it" which means fund it, which Pelosi will definitely do. But once it is assigned to a department....like Homeland Security, etc. it will sit there and not happen. They've done that a lot. Some of it is malice and some of it is incompetence. So forcing him to pass it is one thing. We aren't there yet. But then getting them to implement it in good faith is an entirely different matter. The main thing is we cannot let up. We have to keep pushing back.

by Anonymousreply 138July 30, 2019 10:35 AM

I’m in D.C. and have lately been running into a lot of Deplorables/Trump supporters on the Metro. Yesterday, there was a couple (attractive and well-to-do looking) that gone on at Navy Yard with their teenage son who was wearing a MAGA hat (not he baseball kind but sort of like what Corey Haim is wearing in “Lucas” - sorry that is a very random reference. I had just never seen one in that style before). Anyway, several people around them started whispering and staring at them. And, believe me, they knew why they were being stared at. Another tourist family got on the train at Gallery Place/Chinatown and the teenage daughter whispered to each of her parents, separately, about the boy’s hat.

It had a very OMG-look-at those-freaks-over-there feel to it that the Deplorable family felt very viscerally. It felt good to watch them attempt to act normal while they were being shamed in the most quiet and dignified ways. Resistance is alive in D.C.

I wanted to say something nasty to them, but I felt like they could feel the disapproval of those around them and that it wasn’t necessary in that moment. Not every act of resistance has to be some frothing at the mouth jeremiad.

And I don’t think they were “getting off on the attention.” They were not poor, fat slobs at a Trump rally. They were clearly well-off, well-dressed, attractive people. The woman was the classic upper middle class Trump supporter with blonde hair.

It's almost like they're proud people think of them as stupid bigots and want the challenge of someone saying something about it.

A conservative lawyer and writer who argues for selling off the nation’s public lands is now in charge of a nearly quarter-billion acres in federally held rangeland and other wilderness.

Interior Secretary David Bernhardt on Monday signed an order making Wyoming native William Perry Pendley acting head of the Bureau of Land Management. Pendley argued in a 2016 National Review article that the "Founding Fathers intended all lands owned by the federal government to be sold."

Every Dem and Anti- T'er ally needs to keep up the #MoscowMitch incessantly. He is rattled and it is by his own hand. He is just too blatant about it now.

Btw- what happened to Steve Schmidt? He was everywhere attacking, then he hooked up with a 3rd party candidate and he disappeared.

Imagine, just imagine, if Obama had lambasted "rural, small town hell holes full of meth and opiates" the outrage and couch fainting from the right would be deafening. See, that is the problem with the so-called liberal media- there isn't one. MSNBC doesn't have the type of viewers who get lathered up over something like this. The rest are led around by their noses with any of all distraction from Pres Bone Spurs.

by Anonymousreply 157July 30, 2019 3:27 PM

I agree that MAGA hat people usually luxuriate in being confronted and proudly wear their Trump accouterments in public, daring people to say something to them. That was not the case here. In this particular instance, it was only the teenage son who was wearing the hat and the family, as a whole unit, seemed uncomfortable and could tell that the rest of the train disapproved of them. This is called anecdotal evidence.

It’s almost like you guys hear of someone’s specific experience and decide to discount anything about it that falls outside of your pre-established, monolithic narrative about Deplorables/Trump voters. What you’re describing about these people and the emotions/descriptors you’re assigning to them did not happen.

It's doing funky things -- my post at R172 got a paragraph from someone else inserted into it.

by Anonymousreply 175July 30, 2019 6:15 PM

From the Examiner:

President Trump declared that the Washington Post is more of a "Russian asset" than Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell while speaking to reporters on Tuesday.

Trump's comments come after McConnell faced backlash for stopping two Democratic election reform bills last week. In response, Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank argued that McConnell "is a Russian asset.”

The president was later asked about that label and said, "I think the Washington Post is a Russian asset, by comparison. Mitch McConnell loves our country. He’s done a great job."

"Mitch McConnell has got more judges than probably any — in all fairness, with my help, but as a combination, we are going to be a very soon to 179 federal judges. Nobody has ever seen anything like that. And other than George Washington, we will end up having the highest percentage of judges put on the court, and it’s going to be a legacy. Mitch McConnell is a man that knows less about Russia and Russian influence than even Donald Trump," the president continued.

He went on to say that "they ought to be ashamed of themselves," adding that the Post should "apologize."

McConnell defended himself from the accusations during a speech on the Senate floor Monday, in which he accused them of "modern-day McCarthyism."

by Anonymousreply 176July 30, 2019 6:18 PM

To be fair, a republican would know a great deal about McCarthyism.

by Anonymousreply 177July 30, 2019 6:20 PM

It's the same republican tactic that they have used forever. If they are attacked, they call you McCarthy. Same with the Bush years. If you criticized the president, you were label unpatriotic. You couldn't be patriotic if you didn't adhere to the Bush dogma.

Established business professionals ride the Metro here in D.C. People of all incomes and stripes. You have clearly never been stuck in traffic on the Beltway. The Metro is a great way to avoid some of the most horrible congestion in the country. I know your post was satirical.

R191, based on nothing more than your desire for it to be true. I’m just going to move on from trying -yet again - to describe this to you. Both he and his parents seemed genuinely embarrassed when he saw the reaction to it.

R193, what is a “scary” minority? This is D.C.; most trains have several black people on them. There were a couple Hispanic people sitting across from the MAGAs speaking Spanish but the MAGAs didn’t appear perturbed by them.

As of August 1, 2019, the United States Senate has confirmed 146 Article III judges nominated by President Trump, including

2 Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States,

43 judges for the United States Courts of Appeals,

99 judges for the United States District Courts, and

2 judges for the United States Court of International Trade.

There are currently 35 nominations to Article III courts awaiting Senate action, including 1 for the Courts of Appeals and 34 for the District Courts.[3] There are currently 4 vacancies on the U.S. Courts of Appeals, 97 vacancies on the U.S. District Courts, 2 vacancies on the U.S. Court of International Trade, and 9 announced federal judicial vacancies that will occur before the end of Trump's first term (1 for the Courts of Appeals and 8 for District Courts). Trump has not made any recess appointments to the federal courts.

A majority of House Dems now support impeachment. Again, politically, this is risky. Morally, we all know the answer. My friends think there is a very good chance now there will be an impeachment inquiry.

The judge situation is a catastrophe and why I hate any left leaning person or even a moderate, who says if they don't get their preferred candidate or the Dems aren't 99.9% supporting what they want, they will not vote. Judges, esp the SC where 2 liberals are very old, should be the #1 (BY FAR) issue for any center-left person.

And the Dems need to stop attacking Obama's record. You want to be president, fine, but stop attacking the last one who is of your party and who did a lot but was obstructed at historic levels.

by Anonymousreply 310August 2, 2019 6:39 PM

I still think it's risky not to impeach Trump.

Here's the thing-Trump, repubs, Fox "News" ans his cult followers will spin it either way for him as a win. If House Democrats do impeach and the repub Senate does not vote to remove him, then yes Trump will say the Democrats "failed at their coup because there was nothing there." If House Democrats do not impeach him, Trump will say during the election next year that "Democrats wanted to impeach me but they couldn't because there was nothing there." So it really shouldn't be based on how he and his people spin it

I agree with Warren and Castro who say repubs should be forced to vote on record that they're OK with a criminal, bigot, liar, propagandist and thief as President. Let that stand on their record and in history their descendants will be ashamed.

by Anonymousreply 311August 2, 2019 7:07 PM

Next on the list is going to be Nunes. I hope this brown nose will last only 24 hours.

by Anonymousreply 312August 2, 2019 7:24 PM

Nunes would be just as bad as Ratcliffe...actually maybe worse

by Anonymousreply 313August 2, 2019 7:33 PM

R311 we already know they're OK with Trump being a criminal and Barr, along with the Republicans in Congress have all done nothing but lie, cover up, suppress the findings, and spin and mislead the public. I believe Castro means well but he is naive.

I'd like to see Trump removed from office and available for prosecution. That ought to be the goal. I support the investigation and hearings to gather evidence, but I know too, that the President and this gang of thugs will throw up every legal obstacle, withhold evidence, or force Congress to go to court for every crumb, intimidate witnesses, and block testimony to delay and derail the process.

We can start formal hearings in September, but we will still be messing with Impeachment hearings in January. Trump and his people don't care about the Law, or the rules in Congress, or tradition or procedure. Right now he has ignored a Judge's order and has continued to separate more than 900 children from their parents. They don't play by the rules.

IMO we need to focus on making sure the state elections are as clean as possible, and that we win the Senate as well as the Presidency. If he gets re election we can impeach him, try him and convict him,... if we have the Senate. He'd be gone for sure by April, 2021.

Republicans in Congress have already demonstrated how corrupt they are. We can make a case to the voters now. We need better messaging. It is to the Republicans' advantage to have us impeach now. The majority of Americans are not ready for it. We ought to not do it. Because if we fail to remove him, we will not be able to have a "do over" in 2021.

And if he wins re-election he will piss all over the Constitution. What we have seen so far is a preview to what he is capable of. Ask yourself how a"symbolic" impeachment vote right now, advances the goal of removing him?It doesn't.

by Anonymousreply 314August 2, 2019 7:43 PM

if they don't impeach him now, it wouldn't make sense to try impeaching him based on the same information if he wins a second term.

[quote]117 Democrats for impeachment in the House! WOO HOO! Take that Nancy Pelosi.

You're a fucking idiot. Who do you think is guiding the slow trickle toward impeachment? This was always the plan. If they'd just gone for it right away, it would have been political instead of a slow, deliberate, moral march toward justice. Pelosi's role was to play the counterbalance. She can now say that she was pushed to impeach this fucker by the overwhelming voices growing in her caucus even while she, herself, made sure that the process was honest and apolitical. It also has given the Repugs time to continue burying themselves in their own shit. If they had impeached right away, it would already be over. The Senate would have found him not guilty and it would be through. Now, when they impeach, it will run into the Spring/Summer of 2020. I expect the actual impeachment vote sometime before Christmas with the Senate trial starting in February or March after the holiday break.

R318 R328 Wasn't Steele's information on the pee pee tapes were from a 'Russher'-connected informant who later disappeared from the scene? Evidence places DJT at the Moscow location, with the date, place, and time fitting. If Putty's Intel made tapes of the surveillance, and it is useful blackmail, he would not allow copies being made that are out of his direct control. Possibly a lower level agent did make a copy at the time, but that organization would not function so loose. Perhaps Putty did allow a leak just to remind DJT to fully tow the line. Putty's troll farm operatives could easily drop the rumor into U.S. social media. If the audio story is false, with Trump knowing that, then the story has no power in generating further fear from Trump. Thus, if it is not a 'Russher' origin rumor, then it is a domestic political rumor to further portray DJT as racist in his detest of Obama. Since Steele did not mention audio content, then there would need to be another confirmed source. That is missing in reputable media so rendering credence to it as added details to the pee pee saga, falls empty. That's not proof the act, or something similar, didn't happen.

by Anonymousreply 339August 3, 2019 1:47 PM

R334 There is the Federal Southern District of New York led by a U.S. Attorney who answers to the Justice Department and William Barr. Now the FBI field agents who run that office, the SDNY, are not answerable to Barr, because they are civil servants, but they are answerable to Wray. But the U.S. Attorney is appointed by the President. There is also a state investigation and I think it is run by the State's Attorney General who is an elected official, and run through the county prosecutor, which is usually an elective office. So Cyrus Vance is not "Federal NY Appointed AG." Cyrus Vance, Jr. is strictly state not federal. There is no doubt that Trump's web of corruption is spread all over the place. What infuriates me is that the NEws Media and the New York state officials all knew for years what a corrupt piece of shit Trump was. They could have got him for tax evasion, bank fraud, money laundering and a dozen other things including human trafficking.

by Anonymousreply 340August 3, 2019 2:00 PM

I have always believed the pee tape is real. Trump’s “I’m a germaphobe” defense was also a dead giveaway that it was as well. Anyone who has been watching this person for the past two and half years knows how much he loathes Obama and Obama’s legacy. This is just the kind of sick, twisted stunt he would cook up to get off on that hatred and, let’s be honest, intense jealousy.

You know for once I agree with something Mark Sanford (D-SC) said. Hopefully more and more Republicans start to point this type of shit out. Actually, no - let them remain ignorant and lose a couple of generations of people from being a Republican:

Former Rep. Mark Sanford said that Trump’s rhetoric is turning the Republican Party into the party of white men and making it impossible for the GOP to grow.

Sanford said on MSNBC, “It needs to branch out. To state the obvious, some of the president’s rhetoric is destructive. It’s harmful not only in selling a message but building a party. If we dwindle to being a party of white men we have a real problem given the trendlines within our country.”

R342, except WTF is their message. People are getting smarter. The policies and the Message of the Republican PArty does not resonate with real people. And they resort to lying, to inspiring fear, to exploiting division, to suppressing the vote, to committing fraud, to get elected. Because THEY HAVE NO MESSAGE. There is not one single thing they have proposed that was an honest effort to help people. For them it is Donors and profits first. Fuck people. They talk about less government but their form of government gets in the way and makes life ten times a harder for average Americans to survive. So Mark Sanford is right and he's wrong. It will take more than "messaging" and language to grow their party. It will take proposing real honest proposals to fix all the shit they have fucked up.

This shooting in El Paso is directly traceable to Trump and the GOP inciting race hatred and violence. It is shameful and it is a level of lawlessness from out leaders that is frightening, and reprehensible. We need to get rid of these people NOW. Starting with Trump, and we have to pressure GOP members of Congress to get on the damned impeachment bus and get this thing moving. Enough is enough. Trump will go as far as we allow him to go. We need to start massive pressure campaigns. This was a flagrant abuse of power and there is no need for aMueller report. Their strategy is to incite racial violence. That is a violation of the law.

CNN with Jake Tapper, had on Rick Santorum defending the NRA and opposing any new legislation aimed to curtail assault weapons violence.

This is why I get annoyed with CNN and change the channel. There is no equivalent "both sides" arguments on mass murder incidents.

by Anonymousreply 374August 4, 2019 2:27 PM

So CNN is republican, right?

All Trump’s bluster about CNN being fake news was reverse psychology, right?

by Anonymousreply 375August 4, 2019 3:06 PM

r375 No, but they love playing both sides and blaming both sides. Watch conservatives on any CNN show and it is wall to wall talking points in rapid succession. They are all robots. None can come up with an original thought.

by Anonymousreply 376August 4, 2019 3:32 PM

Jake Tapper said they asked a bunch of politicians to come on his show to discuss the shootings, but the politicians declined. Santorum may have been the best they could get on the Republican side. Kasich is coming on the show later. He condemned Trump's racism before, so he's not afraid of Trump.

Beto O' Rourke called Trump a white nationalist.

by Anonymousreply 377August 4, 2019 3:47 PM

CNN, to me, is best when they do International news. Throughout the day, that has not been their focus in a long time. In the wee morning hours before 4am, one can catch more international news.

As to Santorum, he was once my Senator. What he largely says is predictable. I am all for having Republican politicians interviewed. But get in-office Senators, House members, Governors, state legislators, mayors, DAs, police chiefs, cablnet officials, etc., and anchors/reporters press them with "what are your policies and plans about this, and how will you help bring a resolution to the problem?". If they refuse to show, name them. Democratic politicians should expect the same. On MSNBC for example, interview Pete Buttigieg or his campaign manager/staff. I don't want to hear Karine Jean-Pierre's dismissiveness of him throughout the day. That's manipulation, not news. Murdoch's NewsCorp/Fox is the worst. It is nothing but Trump-cult propaganda. Shep Smith is OK, and Chris Wallace and Judge Napolitano can give some notable/professional perspectives. Otherwise, mostly trash TV.

by Anonymousreply 378August 4, 2019 4:34 PM

I still don't understand what happened to Judge Nap. When Chris Christie was thrown off the transition team, Judge Nap went on Fox parroting points that could only have come from Jared Kushner. Now there's video of Judge Nap explaining how Trump committed obstruction of justice. It's a total turnaround, and I can't imagine what made him see the light.

[QUOTE] On MSNBC for example, interview Pete Buttigieg or his campaign manager/staff. I don't want to hear Karine Jean-Pierre's dismissiveness of him throughout the day.

She’s certainly no match for the very full of himself Jason Johnson (from “The Root”) who basically portrays Mayor Pete as a white devil who no black person would ever think of supporting. He’s been doing that for months in his msnbc appearances. It was so bad once that Nicolle Wallace chided him for speaking of a war veteran so shamefully on her show.

by Anonymousreply 382August 4, 2019 6:16 PM

R380 indeed.

These anri-Pete black, and yes I will say it, lesbian, commentators are so hlatant in trying to derail Pete's campaign. Some of the comments are bordering on viciousness. These mischaracterizations hampers Pete's efforts in making inroads with the black community. Pete has vigorously worked to connect with black voters. He certainly worked hard to deal with the police shooting incident in South Bend. He has not glossed over it. And the fired former police chief was trying to implement illegal surveillance on the city's police personnel. If the Mayor allowed such, he could have been cited for breaking the law.

Pete polls very well with highly educated Democrats.

After pair of mass shootings, Trump remains out of sight

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 392August 4, 2019 8:30 PM

Trump remains out of sight. Coward. The fact is I believe this racist rhetoric is designed to incite and it is part of a larger strategy. He wants to provoke as much violence as he can so he is able to declare an emergency, suspend the Constitution, Declare Martial Law, and IF we have an election he will make sure it's supervised. He is watching what his buddy Putin is doing in Russia arresting and imprisoning people, poisoning and assassinating dissidents, and do not forget they have been chatting a lot. For every time we learn they spoke there may be two or three times the have communicated through surrogates or personally that we know nothing about. Trump goes to Putin for advice. And Putin plays him. He can be cold and critical and derisive. He can bee aloof and withholding, and then he can be chummy. Trump laps it all up.

by Anonymousreply 393August 4, 2019 8:38 PM

Agree with everything you’re saying except that ol’ Putitin is slowly losing control of his shithole. Huge protests, a viable opposition candidate (who he failed to kill off again), and the rest of the world turning on him. Dictators always fail, Puterin just needs a little push.

Come on, rogue CIA agents, work your magic.

McConnell campaign criticized for tombstone with challenger's name

His campaign tweeted a photo of the tombstones at a campaign event in Fancy Farm, Kentucky, and called McConnell the "Grim Reaper of Socialism." McConnell has embraced Democratic criticism of him, saying he was happy to be the grim reaper of liberal proposals.

Among the five "tombstones" displayed by McConnell's campaign is one reading "R.I.P. Amy McGrath November 3, 2020."

Two more are dedicated to socialism and the Green New Deal, the progressive climate change plan championed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

The campaign also displayed a tombstone in honor of Merrick Garland, former President Obama's final nominee to the Supreme Court, who was blocked by McConnell until Obama's term ended leaving the spot open for President Trump to nominate a conservative justice.

McConnell's challenger said the death imagery is troubling - especially in wake of the recent mass shootings.

"Hours after the El Paso shooting, Mitch McConnell proudly tweeted this photo. I find it so troubling that our politics have become so nasty and personal that the Senate Majority Leader thinks it's appropriate to use imagery of the death of a political opponent (me) as messaging," McGrath tweeted, with a copy of the photo.

[quote]about 5 minutes after Tim Ryan's honest, heartfelt words, MSNBC had to issue an 'apology' for his 'profanity'; apparently they got angry messages! So, killing babies (Sandy Hook), gay people (Pulse) and churchgoers is okey dokey, but don't use bad language????

Thinking about both Ryan and Beto this weekend (and even Corey Booker saying "shithole countries" in last week's debate), I think it's obvious that because of Trump, the bar has been lowered so much that other politicians now feel more free to use profanity. But the question is, what do you think of it? Is it in effect the ONE thing we can thank the orange beast for because it brings out a certain realness in otherwise drab politicians or is it something to condemn because it causes politicians to throw their dignity down a shithole?

Trump now has his "both sides" out excuse...the Fox assholes are saying that since the shooter in Dayton was apparently a Warren fan, it's not fair to blame Trump for El Paso. Even though of course Warren doesn't preach violence and hatred while Trump does. They've already turned this into a shaming of mainstream media because of course there's just no way that Trump and their own rhetoric could have contributed to the situation

When Congress goes on recess, especially in the Summer, they go home to shore up their base. There are picnics and parades and losts of public events. We need to make sure we let the GOP members of Congress, especially the Senate, especially guys who a re up for re election know how we feel about them enabling Trump and supporting McConnell. These people do not deserve a moment's peace. If they go to any public event, if you spot them in a restaurant, etc. Speak out! Demonstrate. When Trump goes to Dayton & El Paso tomorrow, it will be MAGA hat fans and some Republican politicians, such as the Governors of Ohio and Texas, that would be comfortable in welcoming him. I would not expect many family members of victims would be receptive to engage him amiably. There will be protests, particularly in El Paso. The media will be out in force covering the entire visits.

by Anonymousreply 509August 6, 2019 5:02 PM

Moscow Mitch is showing cowardice. Rather than calls to Wayne LaPierre and the NRA, and Leningrad Lindsey and other Trump sycophants, he needs to face the aftermath of these shootings directly. Call back the Senate early, debate, and put proposed legislation on the agenda, and have recorded votes. Moscow Mitch won't do that. He is a master of obstruction for anything he doesn't support. Yet, he's eager to railroad through pro-corporate/right wing judges, many with questionable qualifications.

Moscow Mitch is quite corrupt when it comes to wealth and power. He doesn't like sunshine on his devilish deeds.

Follow up question for FCI: Previously you responded to your belief, (and many in DC). that in 2016, voting tallies in many states were absolutely hacked by Russia and Trump absolutely "won" because of it, that he,indeed, is an illegitimate president. But would Putin have gone to such lengths for, say, Ted Cruz or Jeb Bush? if they had gotten the GOP nomination? My contention is, I believe in some form, the GOP primaries were hacked/rigged as well and Trump did not win those legitimately either. It's too long a trail to post right now, but there seems to have been many signs of malfeasance along the way. I recall MSNBC doing a segment about how quickly early favorite Jeb Bush's campaign derailed because of certain events, and how implausible much of it seemed when looking back.

So what's your view? Do you (and others) believe the GOP was fixed months in advance so Trump could be the victor? Thanks.

[quote]The NRA did another quick analysis and definitively blames mental illness and video games.

Not FCI here, but there were indicators Putin's operatives were at work during the GOP primaries. Manafort was brought in ahead of Trump securing the nomination. Those indicted Russians were already in the U.S. at the time. I also believe David Pecker and the NE was not operating in a vaccuum.

r522 Yes, I'm not alone, by a mile, to believe that. The Russians have been active since at least 2014. They had their tentacles in many places and orgs including the NRA and FOX Non-News. I do believe they set up the primary for him. He was going to win, no matter what. I do think HE thought he would lose. He doubted they could pull it off. I think the closeness was by design. I truly believe she won by a healthy margin in all those states without interference.

R526 The FBI/Mueller team investigated Pecker as part of the investigation. It was reported they examined/confiscated the content of the vault. The feds may have retained relevant material pertinent to the investigation and returned the rest. A deal had been made not too prosecute Pecker in exchange for his testimony. Much of it related to the campaign finance inquiry and was related to the Stormy Daniels payoff. I believe the case became part of the SDNY endeavor. Whatever was remaining, Bill Barr has upended the investigation.
