I thinks Billy was correct and just speaking his mind in the usual attitude he has. I don’t think he was trying to offend anyone at the table, and I honestly don’t think Richard took his statements personally. Richard has to know that the sentiment of what he was saying is absolutely correct - Hollywood has an issue with out gay actors and actresses and that’s a fact. I’m sure Brandon has voiced his frustrations about this to Richard privately as well.

I didn’t like how Billy reacted when Richard won for golden globe (and I’m sure it was also because the win really came the fuck out of nowhere honestly) but I doubt he actually has a legit problem with him behind the scenes.

Now with the whole drama, let's put things in perspective. Just a couple of months ago most people assumed Richard was straight and here we are, 26 threads later with plenty of reasons to believe he's in a relationship with another man and not denying it. They seem happy together, their careers are doing really well and, so far not hurting because of the relationship and we're happy just following along (read: stalking) lol

I watched Pose and Billy Porter was good, but... personally I do not really prefer that style of acting. Yes yes, the character was flamboyant and he suited that role very well, but I liked Evan Peters and MJ much more than Billy. And I enjoyed watching Hugh Grant and Richard a LOT more than Billy in Pose, so...

Ideally everyone, regardless of their sexuality, should be able to play any sort of role, based purely on their abilities. In reality of course, gay actors get passed over for plum roles, both straight and gay characters. I fully understand Billy Porter's frustration, esp taking into account the fact that he's black and even more disadvantaged. Having said that, Hugh Grant was perfect in A Very English Scandal.

Richard is getting dragged on twitter a bit and Billy is being congratulated for putting straight cis Richard in his place 🙄. It’s the first time I’ve seen shade on twitter for Richard so I suppose he’s lucky in that way.

Would agree r32. Something about this guy. TV on in the background in the office here in UK - Lorraine show celeb news and there's Richard's big mug on screen. Jumped over to turn it up and it's just the story about how he has spoken this week, yet again, about how embarrassing it is to watch his filmed sex scenes in the company of his mum. We can't get enough about this man which is leading us all (including professional news media) to revisit and review the old news. How will it all blow up when there really is something to report?

I feel a bit bad for poor Richard. Being on this roundtable is a big deal for him, but absolutely NOBODY is talking about him being on it for him or about anything he said… just about what Billy Porter was saying and the cutaway to his face.

I’ll tell you one thing though, this proves all over again that those people insisting that the situation with Brandon was just PR to protect him from this very thing- getting dragged for being straight playing a gay role- was absolutely HOGWASH all along. I could definitely see Brandon comparing this relationship to the one with Sam in terms of him probably thinking about the differences in being public with a man versus being more lowkey like he is now. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing, and if anything both type of situations are probably helping him with his growth. I do think Richard will try his best to find a happy medium for them because he knows Brandon isn’t going back into the closet.

No, you're definitely not the only one. But it's not like the interview was an obvious coming out for people. Most people actually took that article as a confirmation that he was straight and that they weren't together. Only we on DL and some superstans know about everything else and how he previously talked about his relationships so that we come to the conclusion that it's basically a confirmation of the relationship. But for everyone else it's business as usual and Richard hasn't confirmed or hinted at a relationship with Brandon in that article.

Okay I have to laugh at the idea his answer in the NYT was somehow a way to deflect the kind of “straight men taking gay roles”’criticism he is now somewhat in the middle of bc of that round table or if it was even just a way to appear more “gay friendly”....

He was asked specifically if he was dating Brandon - if it was not true there would be no reason in my mind why he would not just say “Oh no, we’re just really good friends. He’s a great person.” That would in no way be a gay panicky response and he would probably earn brownie points for being “secure” enough to be close friends with a gay guy.

But he did not answer that way at all - he obviously chose his words carefully (he was “not in a hurry” to answer according to the Interviewer) and did not deny he was with Brandon. Rather, he heavily implied they’re in a relationship - he’s just not going to talk about it like he never has about any of his relationships.

He knows he can't openly deny it because they're in a real relationship. And if he denied it and they were caught by someone kissing or even only holding hands it would be a very bad look for him of course. I think my issue with the Billy Porter clip and how it’s being framed all over the place as he “shaded” or “shamed” the other actors at that table was not that he doesn’t have a point, but that it’s not really ABOUT the other actors. Most actors have to take what opportunities they can get. Maybe Hugh Grant is different, he’s much more long-established than most at that table, but the others? Say Richard WAS straight, and he had a crisis of conscience over taking on the Rocketman role, and said to them “you know, this really should go to someone who is gay themselves”. You think they’d fall all over themselves going “you’re right, we need to go back to the drawing board on this one”? Nope, they’d have a bunch of other names in mind already, they’d be like “fine, there’s the door, goodbye” and then they’d offer it to the next guy in line. And there would be absolutely NO guarantee that he, or the next 10 possibilities after him, would be gay. That’s how Hollywood works, there’s always a whole line of other people just waiting to take your spot. And sure, you can say, ok, ALL those guys should club together and say “we won’t these roles”. But that’s never going to happen. It’s too cutthroat an industry and people just have to take the offers and opportunities, otherwise they never GET to the place where they might end up having some say. The issue is with directors and producers and casting people- not the actors.

R80 I really don’t think most people who actually read the NYT article came away thinking it was a denial and that he’s totally straight. Sure, SOME people did, the celebitchy comments show that (and honestly, I kind of marvel at their reading of it, because it just doesn’t read that way to me?) but really, I don’t see most people saying that. I don’t even see some of his hardcore fans who really don’t WANT him to be gay saying that he denied it. They’re just clinging REAL hard to “nothing is confirmed”. I think most people that did read it had the sense to see what he was saying- and not saying.

I think it’s more that a lot of these people just didn’t SEE the article and really don’t know about Richard and Brandon. They think Richard is straight because for most of his career, EVERYONE thought he was 100% straight, and they’ve just not seen the most recent developments. I must admit, I am kind of surprised by that, given how much talk there has been about them on social media and just how many articles there have been about them and were written about that one NYT quote- it seemed to me like it was EVERYWHERE, in fact I must admit I did worry about just how everywhere it seemed to be and what the impact might be on their relationship. But at the end of the day, Richard isn’t Brad Pitt or someone like that. Even as his star is rising and the Daily Mail love to post more and more pictures of him, he’s still not that big, not yet, to people not paying some attention. In a way it’s probably a good thing. As much as I hate seeing him dragged all over twitter for something that isn’t even true about him, the less pressure on this relationship from the outside world, and the more Richard can go at the pace he’s ok with about being out, the better the chances for it to actually not implode.

Yeah, most people aren't even aware of Brandon and Richard or anything about Richard's private life. It's not like there are photos of them making out anywhere. If people have seen anything about Brandon and Richard it's perhaps one photo of them walking next to each other and that's it. I think people here think that the speculation about Richard's sexuality is very widespread because DL talks about them and on DL it seems like a big thing. I'll be honest; I want Richard to actually explicitly say he's gay/bi/pan whatever he actually is and not just imply and hint and confirm by omission. I'm not saying he owes anyone anything, because he doesn't. But I would still like him to say it because I think it still means something, and every high profile person who comes out is important. The presumption is that anyone who hasn't outed themselves explicitly is straight by default. Billy should know better than most that the closet still exists. Let's be real - at least some actors who take gay roles are comfortable doing so because they're gay or bi themselves and not out to to the world. The closet still exists for many reasons - Hollywood greed, internalized homophobia, fear of public and professional backlash which are still things that happen. That's an important nuance in this kind of conversation and he didn't speak to that at all. It's not like actors are the ones with most of the power in this situation.

Yes, some of them do the cost benefit analysis to still make the decision to come out, like Brandon specifically, but how many true mega stars are openly gay/bi? Things are getting better but there's a long way to go. Just look at Timothee Chalamet's Vulture article. This is a young guy who's not campy in the least, but just because he did a gay movie, hasnt had a public gf in some time and is sweet/giggly in interviews, Hollywood execs were calling him fey and comparing him to Anthony Perkins. I dont blame Richard much for not giving a straight answer, not when his career;s just starting. Billy probably knows better than to presume everyone is straight but his point was that, unless an actor is OUT as gay/bi/pan and/or flamboyant, they don't have to face the same difficulty in getting roles as the actors who are out.

Casting directors will often not choose an openly out gay man for the role of a straight man because they think it "ruins the illusion". At the same time - they will often also pass on out gay actors for gay roles because there are "bigger" straight stars jumping at the opportunity to play the gay role so they can get awarded for immersing themselves in the role of a gay man etc...

R145 I agree. There's also the matter that we just don't know what's going on with someone's personal life or what they're going through and why they're not ready to come out yet. It's a lot of public pressure and not everyone who finds themselves in that position can handle the intense public scrutiny. I feel like Richard is going at his own pace He's out openly traveling with his boyfriend and calling it a relationship in the New York Times. I hope he actually says out loud that he's not straight, but I also don't think it's quite accurate to say he's closeted.

Cheeky chappy Taron Egerton (self declared straight) can play an action part one minute and a big queen like Elton the next. THAT is the central inequality referenced by Porter. And spare me any discussion about talent. Taron was not the only actor who could play Elton. And if he was the only actor that would allow the production to get funding - THAT further speaks to Porter's point.

"Straight-identified" or "not out" works without erasing anyone's actual identities while making the point that Hollywood still heavily rewards both straight actors and lgbt actors who don't out themselves.

That's not true. If you don't make a huge interview specifically about this topic but just mention it shortly when asked about noone would drag an actor for that. Noone would ever call you an attention whore if you don't make a whole campaign out of that topic. Others are still there further down and say four hours ago even though thats a few hours off. Sometimes it doesn’t show at all....does it post the time based on the last like in your spurt of activity maybe? Or the first like in a group?

So if he liked something four hours ago IG will sometimes lump it together if he liked something 3 minutes ago, and that can look like he liked all of those posts at the same time. Other times it leaves them separate. He was on a few times in the middle of the night so that's probably the time discrepancy. Sometimes things disappear all together for some reason I don't know.

Honestly IG's list of the likes of your followed accounts is really hit or miss. i have seen some likes from people i follow disappear entirely from that list just an hour or two later and then when i went back to look at that post, the like was still there, it just wasn't showing on my list anymore for whatever reason. Yeah, I think distance will play a major factor and also reassurance for Brandon. I know Brandon must have learned LOADS from his previous super public relationship but I somehow feel like I can see him pulling away from Richard if he gets tired or restless regarding how private they are. I don’t think he’s an attention whore by any means but I can see him being easily swayed by friends or family members that may think he could do better in terms of being with someone more willing to shout it from the roof tops from time to time. Not really “broken”, but in an interview he says it’s a really emotional process for him and everyone included and that they’re really putting their bodies and minds through their performances. He just seems passionate in general but I’ve never heard him say the experience made him feel broken, but more just draining. I also think he has a really great support system so he probably bounces back more than some actors.

Not sure where this idea that Richard never spoke about his relationships comes from. He was the one to confirm in an interview that he was dating Jenna, would talk about visiting her on the Doctor Who set and how excited he was that she was the companion, spoke about how they met and even called her his first love.

I bring that up to say that what goes for one relationship, like being more public, isn't necessarily what works for another. Just because Richard and Jenna and Brandon and Sam were more open doesn't mean Brandon needs Richard to yell about him from the rooftops. And of course both those relationships ended so maybe privacy is the way to go.
