I'll Be Your Girl For All Treasons (The Mueller Investigation Part 81)

I'll be yours in springtime when the flowers are in bloom. We'll wander through the meadows in all their sweet perfume. And every night I'll hold you tight between that April Moon...

I'll be yours in summer, when we're playing in the sand... we'll spend the day together makin' love and getting tan...

I'll be your girl for all treasons, all the year through... Your girl for all treasons, 'cause I love, yes I love to be everything to you... just you.

by Anonymousreply 27February 4, 2019 10:42 PM

The OP pic of Aunt Pitty Pat is quite adorable.

by Anonymousreply 28February 4, 2019 10:47 PM

What I wouldn't give for this to happen: Drumpftard is giving his SOTU and while he's making a particularly important point, ALL the Democrats stand up in UNISON and yell "YOU LIE!!!!!!" at the top of their lungs.

But they never would, so WTFever.

by Anonymousreply 29February 4, 2019 11:39 PM

Wonder if John Bolton was in the room when he said it, r24? Being very, very quiet. He knows exactly how much the intelligence community was pressured to tell lies to make Bush and Cheney's war happen.

by Anonymousreply 35February 5, 2019 12:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 36February 5, 2019 12:35 AM

by Anonymousreply 52February 5, 2019 1:46 AM

I forget where I read it, but Gates (Manafort's protรฉgรฉ) might have stolen funds from the inaugural fund. And then Melania channeled a ton of money to a good friend for planning inaugural events. And I think there was suspicion that the Russians were using the fund to channel money to Trump and all of the inauguration funds could not be accounted for.

by Anonymousreply 53February 5, 2019 1:51 AM

I'm reading Michelle Obama's autobiography. It almost makes me cry, she and Barrack are so damned honest, decent, and brilliant. How is it that America replaced them with one of the most dishonest, repulsive men in human history? It makes me sick.

by Anonymousreply 66February 5, 2019 3:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 67February 5, 2019 3:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 68February 5, 2019 3:22 AM

Prosecutors are investigating crimes related to conspiracy to defraud the US, bank fraud, wire fraud, and lying to investigators, re: inaugural fund. This is reported by WaPo, who have seen the documents from the SDNY. Apparently it grew out of the Cohen raid.

by Anonymousreply 69February 5, 2019 3:24 AM

I hope Stacy Abrams hits it out of the park. She knows how hazardous the rebuttal speech can be for younger party stars.

I think the big thing that's going to happen is her ascension into the top tier of Dem stars.

by Anonymousreply 75February 5, 2019 6:11 AM

Nancy Pelosi should do little noises with her mouth behind his shoulder to totally throw hiim his skit off and derail the event: yum, pops, smack, woooh, zing, barf, ho, tsk, haaaa and so on. That would bring his attention span from that of a gnat to thhat of a drosophila.

Dotard really deserves to be booed and heckled. I do hope to here some sort of response to the outrageous lies that he continually farts out of that pie hole of his. Last summer it was estimated that fat Donnie told an average of 15 lies a day. That figure has, without a doubt, increased and the Mueller probe moves closer and closer to the him. His lies, and the lies of his sycophants, should be called out on a continual basis. Whenever anyone in the tRump crime family (including their 'soldiers' McConnell, Graham, Stone, etc.) is in a public place, they should be jeered and shamed.

Well, one thing we know for sure, you can count on it: He will talk about how important his wall is, and he will threaten to shut down the government in spite of the fact that I'd bet people who still talk to him might urge him not to. So I want to see how many hypocrites on the Republican side applaud and cheer when he says that.

So this is what Trump will walk in to the SOTU knowing. He's arming Al Qaeda and giving them new life. He and his filthy son-in-law and their Saudi buddies. So he will use his speech tonight as he would a political rally. He will play to his TV audience MAGAs. Attack the Lying Press, build the Wall, Shut everything down if I don't get my way, and incidently I'm declaring an emergency if things don't get settled by February 15th. That's it. That's the speech. He'll use threats of a shutdown and the declaration of Emergency as a distraction from today's headlines.

Trump names yet another environmental destructionist for Interior Secretary. He names an oil industry lobbyist, David Bernhard.

More destroying of wildlife habitats, the destroying of old growth trees, sell-off of federal lands at bargain rates, more asphalt, more ground contamination, dirtier air, filthier water, more health issues, more drilling and fracking, and richer developers, timber barons, invested CEOs, and bankers.

Koch Bros rejoicing.

Here's something Trump won't be talking about in his SOTU, to the detriment of us all:

Scientists have discovered an enormous void under an Antarctic glacier, sparking concern that the ice sheet is melting faster than anyone had realized โ€” and spotlighting the dire threat posed by rising seas to coastal cities around the world, including New York City and Miami.

The cavity under Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica is about six miles long and 1,000 feet deep โ€” representing the loss of 14 billion tons of ice.

If the loss of ice becomes so severe that the glacier collapses โ€” something computer models predict could happen in 50 to 100 years โ€” sea levels would rise by two feet. Thatโ€™s enough to inundate coastal cities across the globe.

by Anonymousreply 123February 5, 2019 5:15 PM

Uhoh. Buzzfeed published a "cache of internal Trump Organization documents" today, that back up what everyone now knows - that Trump and family were actively pursuing business deals in Rusher during the campaign, including soliciting Putin support for Trump for President.

[quote]As Trump went from rally to rally, vociferously denying any dealings in Russia, his representatives, Michael Cohen and his associate Felix Sater, worked with Trump Organization lawyers and even Ivanka Trump to push forward negotiations to build a 100-story edifice just miles from the Kremlin. The fixers believed they needed Putinโ€™s support to pull off the lucrative deal, and they planned to use Trumpโ€™s public praise for him to help secure it. At the same time, they plotted to persuade Putin to openly declare his support for Trumpโ€™s candidacy. โ€œIf he says it we own this election,โ€ Sater wrote to Cohen.

[quote]โ€œAll we need is Putin on board and we are golden, meeting with Putin and top deputy is tentatively set for the 14th,โ€ Sater emailed Cohen on Oct. 12, 2015. โ€œSee buddy I can not only get Ivanka to spin in Putins Kremlin office chair on 30 minutes notice, I can also get a full meeting.โ€ Trump tweeted out a Washington Examiner story with the headline, โ€˜Putin loves Donald Trump,โ€™ on Oct. 17, 2015, just days after receiving a signed letter of intent from a Moscow developer.

I get a kick out of the tweeters at R98 insisting they voted for him once but WON'T VOTE FOR HIM IN 2020!

As if Sing Sing is anywhere near a campaign trail.

by Anonymousreply 125February 5, 2019 5:27 PM

Well hunny, if he was actively soliciting Putin's help and it can be proved, then he is toast. That is totally illegal. It's one thing to have buffers like Putin's "close friends" among the oligarchs talking to Trump about running, and giving him money, and blowing smoke up his ass and quite another for Vlad to get personally involved...as he did... at Trump's request. Because those GRU agents Mueller indicted, and that troll farm and the hackers in St. Petersburg, didn't get set up by oligarchs. That was a direct result of Putin. No one tells GRU agents what to do except Putin. Good for Buzzfeed. We have no need to "wait for Mueller." Trump has already destabilized this country to Putin's benefit as President, to start impeachment proceedings. And you gotta know that a lot or people in the Intel community, and very likely the Supreme Court, know shit we don't know. I think Roberts believes Trump and anyone in his orbit, is scum.

[quote]this is huge. Why isn't it being covered on MSNBC, etc.?

Probably because MSNBC, etc. feel they got burned by jumping on BuzzFeed's report that Trump directed Cohen to lie to Congress. That story may indeed by accurate, but no other media org. has been able to corroborate it. That makes them gun-shy about this newest BuzzFeed exclusive.

by Anonymousreply 130February 5, 2019 5:32 PM

This is the third (?) major thing in this entire saga that has been broken by... Buzzfeed.

I was thinking about these Treason threads and I laugh. Do you realize how many peoplw in the US are clueless about any of this ? Yes, there are A LOT that are trying to stay informed, but as to the larger story and the list of characters, they too are ill informed. We are on part 81 of this thread and it has been going on for well over a year...and for months before that there were multiple Russia threads. The indictment for Flynn started this thread. It is a day to day accounting of various news reporting and a collective discussion of the people, places and events...It really is a historical document. A living historical document. Who in a million years would have thought that ?

by Anonymousreply 163February 5, 2019 8:10 PM

r161....thats EXACTLY why you NEED to watch. In among his lies, he admits things and tips his hat to what he has up his sleeve and possible policy. You also need to see him lie when you know the truth so you can counter someone who believes him or the lie. Always keep abreast of your enemy.

by Anonymousreply 171February 5, 2019 9:09 PM

I've been reading Fear, by Bob Woodward. My big problem with the book is that he seems to make Trump appear knowledgeable about certain issues like trade, etc. Now, he says Trump is uninformed and ridiculous in his demands, and he is, and his staff at that time like Porter and a few others try to stop him from doing terrible things or explain why he can't do what he wants, but at the same time, I asked myself, how would Trump even know to ask? And it's pretty clear he is talking to other people not on the page. People his staff seems to not be aware of. So IMO Putin has been coaching him, and making demands and suggesting things through a variety of methods, including his oligarch buddies and others.

by Anonymousreply 172February 5, 2019 9:41 PM

R170, the Trump Org is a US-based company and is bound by US law. Iโ€™m sure Trump has relished having foreign businesses like a pig in shit, but he canโ€™t hide forever.

I didn't watch the State of the Union last night. This morning, from the coverage I'm seeing, it seems like it was no big deal.

by Anonymousreply 228February 6, 2019 10:52 AM

R228 the reports this morning were that he got a 58% approval rating for his speech....but the audience who watched it skewed Republican, and Trump supporters were higher than anything they've seen for a SOTU. So a lot of people didn't watch it.

by Anonymousreply 229February 6, 2019 11:44 AM

I didn't watch it either r228, but I want to ask a question from those who did, how many Democrats applauded Hair Furor when he entered the room? And how many Democratic whores asked for his autograph or a picture with him?

by Anonymousreply 230February 6, 2019 11:50 AM

R230, none. I watched the entrances very closely and there was a lot of hostility in that room. Coldness. Watching who was interacting with whom was interesting. Republicans were not talking to Democrats at any level, and applause for Trump's entrance was muted, and very "polite." Nancy respects the office not the man. AS he came in and greeted the four SUpremes, even Kavanaugh seemed like he smelled something bad in his limp greeting of the President. IMO the most partisan piece of shit was Gorsuch.

The Lindsey Graham defender(s), troll(s) or not, increasingly posting on DL, fail to note that Graham craves the cameras and sometimes multiple bookings a day on TV, most frequently on Fox News. It doesn't stop there; anchors on CNN and MSNBC reference him daily, moreso than any other Senator. Graham chose to flip and be a sychophant, surrogate, and enabler for DJT, much of it directly related to the investigation. His PAC chose to accept foreign oligarch money, and he accepted NRA money, also tainted with foreign oligarch money. Expecting him not to receive negative responses, is rather absurd.

As to the amusing 'Miss L' characterizations, that has been around for decades, notable in South Carolina before he became a US Senator. He was a Congressman before that, including a House leader to vote to impeach Bill Clinton

Graham's anti-gay voting record, and some past, disturbing anti-gay rights rhetoric, certainly got the attention of DL, publications, and other social media that were not even gay-related. What is seen as hypocrisy, measuredly authentic or not, will get reactions from those who have been victims of his, and others, discrimination.

If Graham doesn't want certain responses of people not pleased with him, perhaps he needs to stop running to Sean Hannity to be featured.

R244, it was also weird that she and Jared went for the weekend only, halfway across the world, when she was breastfeeding, without the baby, presumably in a private plane. They tried to pass it off as a fun weekend vacation, when it was obvious it wasnโ€™t.

At the time, Wendy Deng was rumored to be dating Putin. It seems unlikely that she was, it only lasted a short time. People have speculated that Deng was acting as a bagnan for Putin, giving money to Ivanka, who could get it past customs by using a private plane. That means Ivanka carried illegal funds over international lines for Trump. At the time there was a rumor that Trump needed money for the campaign, I think people were going unpaid. Although Trump never pays anyone anyway.

Ivanka made a big deal about what great friends she was with Deng at the time on Twitter. This just brought the whole thing to peopleโ€™s attention. I donโ€™t know if it was stupidity or she was sending a signal to somebody, maybe Trump, that she got the money.

by Anonymousreply 248February 6, 2019 4:08 PM

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff announced Wednesday a broad investigation his committee would undertake "beyond Russia" into whether President Donald Trump's financial interests are driving his actions.

Schiff said the investigation would "allow us to investigate any credible allegation that financial interests or other interests are driving decision-making of the President or anyone in the administration."

"That pertains to any credible allegations of leverage by the Russians or the Saudis or anyone else," Schiff told reporters after the House Intelligence Committee's first meeting in the new Congress.

by Anonymousreply 264February 6, 2019 7:27 PM

R255, I wondered about that, but maybe they were able to bribe their way through. If they were carrying money from Putin, he probably had somebody on the payroll that could help them. I always got the impression they were in that exact place because it couldnโ€™t be done in another location.

I wouldnโ€™t put it past Putin to have Customs officials on the payroll. You know heโ€™s doing all kinds of shady things for himself too. He probably smuggles money out for himself and puts it in a Swiss bank or somewhere.

My guess is Ivanka would be carrying a very large sum. Maybe she got it out in a diplomatic pouch, no one can open that.

by Anonymousreply 265February 6, 2019 7:35 PM

R265 she wasnโ€™t a diplomat at the timeโ€”Dump was still a candidate. My feeling is they may have made a pit stop somewhere not in the US and deposited the money there.

by Anonymousreply 268February 6, 2019 9:40 PM

See? This is what I'm talking about!!!!! When we're on our game, we can do anything. This whole Wendi Deng/Ivanka thing is gold. This is like our Butch Sous Chef investigation. We're THAT GOOD.

I think the simplest explanation is usually the right one, so the notion of Wendi being Putin's bagman seems like a very plausible scenario. The possibility of them stopping off somewhere to deposit the money before returning home makes sense too, although bribing customs is also plausible.

Think about it. Trump had his Russian Oligarch buddies following him to weird campaign stops. Very probably delivering money. And even before that the whole billionaires-on-private-planes paying off customs people may have been going on for a long time, pre -dating any campaign.

In fact, if I were the SDNY FBI I'd certainly look into it. IMO it would be money laundering 101 to do that. And Ivanka and Trump, INC had product coming in from all over the world, China, etc. Trump's a cheap bastard when it comes to paying bills.

Anyone know how it works to pay duty on products like 20,000 cheap purses and 600 tons of rags she calls designer coats? This entire family has been crooked for years. Trump is one of those guys who thinks he is special and he is allowed to "cut a few corners. "

OTOH, it's possible Trump was using Deng and Ivanka as couriers related to the Trump Moscow deal too. So I'm thinking two solid leads here.Either money for his campaign, or Trump Moscow. Absent any new developments let's keep a focus on this. We may break another case. Mueller will love us!

I think the delay in Cohen's testifying is good. It means something is going down. Big time. They don't want Congress fucking up something and it may break very soon. Jared, Donnie, Jr., Steve Bannon and Brad Parscale are all on my list of hopefuls.

I've said from the very beginning that the Dubrovnik meeting was a major smoking gun. It didn't make any sense at the time. Trump had just won the nomination and the campaign was in full swing. That's not when two of your major advisors decided to go on vacation - especially since Ivanka had just given birth a week or so earlier. I think we'll find that there was money being delivered to Trump. I think we'll also find that Cohen was also in Prague - even though he has said that he was not there. Ivanka and Jared also had a couple of "vacations" to Aspen that seemed suspect at the time. Aspen has lots of private jets and the airport is small so would be easy to bribe any airport official.

[quote]Just saw the following on FB in a response to an article about Trump having a rally in Texas.

R326, you need to cite your sources, even if it's a FB post from a random person. Remember that's how the Ruskie trolls operate, they used to just leave comments like that without linking to posts so that people could investigate if say comments were done by real people or just trolls.

I sure wish I had a dollar for every time someone has said "Junior will be indicted this Friday or Saturday".

I bet I could purchase a super-sized happy meal. Or two.

by Anonymousreply 331February 7, 2019 4:17 PM

[quote]I sure wish I had a dollar for every time someone has said "Junior will be indicted this Friday or Saturday".

So... you'd have $1?

Because nobody really ever says he's going to be indicted on a certain day. All anyone has ever done is state that's what they hope for.

by Anonymousreply 332February 7, 2019 4:20 PM

Now Trump is crying, "The republicans never did this to Obama!" Wasn't it HE who had an investigation going in Hawaii that was finding "big" things re: Obama's birth certificate? Didn't that non productive investigation last over two years?

by Anonymousreply 333February 7, 2019 4:29 PM

It's one thing to lie, it's another thing to be a bad liar. (Has Donald said anything about his SOTU ratings, or can he not even enjoy that?)

by Anonymousreply 334February 7, 2019 4:56 PM

Trump's outrageous lies on the regular, daily multiple times a day, spring from the well of contempt he holds for both the Media, and for government/politicians/ and the Law. He has successfully worked that triumvirate of venaliity with ease for decades. He doesn't give a fuck. He has no esteem for the suckers who support him either. He doesn't care about them.

by Anonymousreply 335February 7, 2019 5:07 PM

Whittaker won't testify if subpoenaed. He's scared.

by Anonymousreply 336February 7, 2019 5:14 PM

Mueller has been quite careful in not having leaks as to when action is taken. The media keeps tabs on characters under investigation, including keeping watch near their residences, such as CNN having a cameraman nearby when Stone was arrested. Other clues come from court filings that are part of the public record, except when certain documents are sealed. Also, grand jury deliberations are not disclosed when in process. Still, a leak or two may be allowed by investigators, at certain timing, for varying motives.

Mueller may indict Junior, Jared, etc., close to the end of the investigation, or in way.to pre-empt pardons issued by DJT.

It's going to be nasty, dramatic, and groundbreaking.

by Anonymousreply 337February 7, 2019 5:14 PM

Whitaker doesn't really have a choice, does he?

I love how much Rachel Maddow was making fun of him and his "flopsweat" the other day. It was hysterical.

by Anonymousreply 338February 7, 2019 5:15 PM

Whitaker was there to report to Trump what evidence Mueller has, and where the investigation is heading.

Barr will be more professional, but may still act to minimize damage for Trump and other major Republicans who could be cited.

He has contempt for literally everyone except (some of) his family, Vladimir Putin, and the billionaires who call the shots. Tiger Woods sometimes for photo op fun.

One day a clever dramatist will create (or draw from) a situation in which Trump has to choose between Ivanka and Putin. It should be obvious, but of course isn't. Because look at with whom we are dealing.

Do the Pences even realize how much of a laughingstock they are? I know that Trump and his disgusting crotch-fruit don't seem to care (at least Trump doesn't), but I don't think the Pences have the same psychological makeup.

They do realize that they'll have to live on this Earth after this is all over, right? It's so funny watching them try to tiptoe around the horrors of the administration, like at any minute they'll need to try and distance themselves from the whole grotesquerie of it (which is impossible, of course).

I keep imagining all the people left in the White House (Trump, Pence, Ivanka, Jared, etc.) in a game of musical chairs where they're slowly walking in a circle around the last remaining seats while the music plays (I am imagining the theme song from "Benny Hill"), their asses hovering around each of them, trying to leave room to snatch one up when the music (AKA Mueller) stops.

I had interactions with two deplorables this week. Unusual as I live in a very blue county in a blue state. I don't run across them too often although their unschooled letters show up regularly in the Letters to the Editor of our local paper.

The first was a couple. I work in a store and the woman part of the couple does, too, but she came in to pay her rent (it's a collective, we all take turns working). First, the male starts joking about Fake News and the word "trump" starts dribbling from his lips. Unable to stop myself, my face became a mask of revulsion.

Then the woman chimes in, "I love Trump, he's done wonderful things for our country." "No he hasn't," I said.

"I'm a Christian and against abortion. He's a good Christian, too." "No, he isn't," I said.

"He's changed, people can change. I was once the Whore of Babylon, I changed," she said.

At that I was silent because, first, she's married (I think separated) and was there with her lover who was actually writing the check for her rent, as he always does. Thus, still a whore. Then another woman who works there came over, giving me the opportunity to escape. The encounter upset me.

Stupid trump is backed by idiots, clear and simple. Our country is in the power of the mean and stupid. Makes me sick.

by Anonymousreply 410February 8, 2019 3:53 AM

I'm going to put my tin hat on here for a minute.

I firmly believe that all of this shit going down regarding Northam, et al, is a planned attack to put a rethug in charge in Virginia so that manafort can be completely pardoned.

That's what fat Donnie is waiting on in order to pardon manafort. Those are state charges that fat boy can't get Paulie out of.

That's why manafort has continued doing his dirt - he knows he will skate. He knows what's going on to free him so he can flee to Russia.

I say we fry the fucker. It's the only way to be sure. And it would put the fear of Cher into these traitors.

by Anonymousreply 411February 8, 2019 5:13 AM

What would the governor of Virginia have to do with pardoning Manafort for federal crimes?

by Anonymousreply 412February 8, 2019 5:19 AM

R412, clearly R411 means that he/she believes Drumpf is trying to get someone in VA who will pardon Manafort for State Crimes so that when he pardons for Federal crimes, Manafort will be completely pardoned.

by Anonymousreply 413February 8, 2019 5:27 AM

I agree that there is something sinister behind all this but not necessarily for that reason.

They have wanted that state so bad with a blood thirst. When those images were presented to the repugs, they seized the opportunity. They believe that if they can control the gov seat, they can win it back in 2020 with their usual shenanigans.

But man have they wanted that state back in bad way. They want a red coast. Theyโ€™re getting close.

by Anonymousreply 414February 8, 2019 5:30 AM

They are getting further and further from a "red coast" every election cycle, even with all the cheating. They're not getting close to anything.

Manafort's crimes are not in Virginia state court. They are in federal court in Virginia. His crimes are federal. A governor can't pardon federal crimes. And, Manafort needs to worry about New York, not Virginia, trying his ass for a million other crimes.

R406 - ten to one AMI didnโ€™t hack him. Iโ€™ll bet the new girlfriend handed the texts and pics over. Who knows what her motivation was? Money probably - or theyโ€™re holding something else over her. But whatever the reason - smells like a honey trap.

And havenโ€™t others pointed out that the woman has family connections to stone and/or his minions? (Dunno how accurate that is?) -

So yeah. Look at each spineless tethug congressman and senator and ask yourself - what have they got on them?

by Anonymousreply 417February 8, 2019 10:20 AM

So, it is Pecker & AMI that holds much of the blackmail stuff on politicians that could be used in behalf of DJT?

That could explain why, certain Senators and House members, are such extreme sychophant for DJT. They were told the dirt, with pics, what the Nat'l Enquirer had on them.

Spurs, Pecker, MBS, etc., fucking with Bezos and the WP is biting off more than than they can chew.

by Anonymousreply 418February 8, 2019 11:03 AM

R417 it is certainly is suspicious. Iโ€™ve read that Bezos hasnโ€™t seen her in a few weeks, so maybe heโ€™s blaming her, whether or not she was hacked or willfully handed the stuff over. And r411, no tin hat, you make sense re the GOP attacks in Virginia. I donโ€™t know if theyโ€™re necessarily about Manafort but I do believe the GOP is behind them and itโ€™s to try and turn Virginia red. All of the stuff we are seeing re Democrats like Amy Klobuchar are all the doing of the GOP. Theyโ€™re slimes, and they canโ€™t go low enough to get what they want. I mean, all of this stuff is from years and years ago. The question is, do we want to go just as low?

Senator Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) told CBS News yesterday that the Senate inquiry into Russian intelligence activities is broader, and perhaps more consequential, than it has long been thought to be.

"I'm not going to tell you that what we set out to do โ€” which was to understand what happened in '16 โ€” is what's extended the life of the investigation," Burr said. "I think it's a better understanding of what happened and how coordinated and organized the effort was."

He made clear that the investigation is not compiling the story of one pivotal election, but of something larger, more complicated and, from a counterintelligence perspective, more nefarious. The final report may be so highly classified, he said, that a meaningful portion may not be made public at all.

"Many of the connections that we've made are the direct result of intelligence products," he said. "I think it's safe to say we've interviewed people that I don't even know if the special counsel knows about them โ€” but you've got to remember that we're on a totally separate path than what they are."

"My only advice to you is, be careful. There are a lot of false narratives out there,."

Bill Shine. All these people, Pecker at AMI, Trump, etc. all have that gangster mentality. Like they're big mafiosi.. What a low point for our country. Ronan is very brave.

Hey they can enlist the Saudis, of course, but at the end of the day it's the no long so invisible hand of Putin. As we watch this unfold we will get a real good picture of how determined these rotten bastards are to hold on to their gains and keep Trump and that Extreme Right cabal in power. We are in for a real ugly, dangerous period, and the people running for PResident against Trump and investigative journalists are literally taking their lives into their own hands. And think about it. Bezos is a wealthy, powerful man. And they're going after him. Now personally I think they have overreached, but you have to know Trump & Putin are real pissed off at the Washington Post and that's what it comes down to.

by Anonymousreply 431February 8, 2019 12:33 PM

Putin has gone after wealthy powerful men in Russia and he has prevailed, so it's not surprising he might try it here. And using the Saudis as a front is something the Russians would do. They have often used surrogates in the Middle East for their dirty work at all levels.

The deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, privately complained that he was ordered by president Donald Trump to write the notorious memo justifying the firing of the FBI director James Comey, according to Comeyโ€™s former deputy.

Andrew McCabe writes in a new book that Rosenstein, who has publicly defended the memo, lamented that the president had directed him to rationalise Comeyโ€™s dismissal, which is now the subject of inquiries into whether Trump obstructed justice.

McCabe, a 22-year FBI veteran, who was fired after internal investigators said he had been dishonest, is scathing about a president he views as posing a threat to the country. In his sharpest criticism, McCabe writes that after firing Comey, Trump and the White House counsel, Don McGahn, acted like mobsters by in effect offering McCabe protection in return for loyalty.

โ€œThe president and his men were trying to work me the way a criminal brigade would operate,โ€ McCabe writes.

McCabe portrays Trump and his senior aides as frequently distracted by TV news and suspicions of leakers in the White House. He is also sharply critical of Jeff Sessions, Trumpโ€™s first attorney general, saying he had trouble focusing, frequently flew into red-faced rages and confused classified intelligence with things he had read in the media.

R446 I hope so. The breadth of their arrogance is simply staggering. I've rarely seen such open hostility on the part of cabinet officials to the legislative body that they depend on for their budget and other support as well as the occasional favor. These Neo Nazis are too damned sure of themselves and their words and behavior is downright disrespectful. They don't acknowledge the legitimacy or the authority of Congress. Whitaker is stupid and obvious. But that's a good thing, because if he were smarter and more underhanded and smoother, he might fool more people. Fortunately as the Watergate Deep Throat guy said in the movie: These guys aren't very bright, and things got out of hand." I have been reading Bob Woodward's book, Fear, and while it has some flaws and things I take exception to, his portrayal of Don McGahn gave me goosebumps. McGahn is an evil bastard and a maniac. by Anonymousreply 474February 8, 2019 4:59 PM

One of the things I learned from reading Fear is how closely Trump monitors Twitter. I mean he monitors it. Anything coming from his administration. So he has to know that Whitaker is a total joke and Trump hates that. He smells weakness and looking at Whitaker all sweaty, lacking in poise, etc. Trump hates a sloppy presentation. He hates a Fail. So Whitaker's stock went down with Trump today. And you know Whitaker was coached. So if he does that bad with coaching can you imagine?

New Evidence Emerges of Possible Wrongdoing by Trump Inaugural Committee.

Federal prosecutors in New York are circling Donald Trumpโ€™s inaugural committee as part of a wide-ranging investigation into possible money laundering, illegal contributions and cash-for-access schemes. Now, WNYC and ProPublica have identified evidence of potential tax law violations by the committee.

A spokesman confirmed that the nonprofit 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee paid the Trump International Hotel a rate of $175,000 per day for event space โ€” in spite of internal objections at the time that the rate was far too high. If the committee is deemed by auditors or prosecutors to have paid an above-market rate, that could violate tax laws prohibiting self-dealing, according to experts.

Tax law prohibits nonprofits from paying inflated prices to entities that are owned by people who also control or influence the nonprofitโ€™s activities.

Just looking at Trump, he has gained considerable weight, shows no evidence of regular exercise, looks and acts fatigued and stressed, and by his tweets and verbal messaging, doesn't come across as mentally grounded.

r513, I mentioned this on another thread, but as soon as Trump became President, "human trafficking" was put front and center at Homeland Security. There were suddenly scare-inducing ad campaigns and posters at airports implying your kids were going to be stolen any day now and put to work as sex slaves. Part of it just fits with Trump's "hate everyone who is not White American"/scary foreigners scare tactics. Human Trafficking is a problem worldwide. But I also agree that it was projecting. If Homeland Security is trying to stop this, how on earth could Donald and his criminal cronies have been part of it? people may ask themselves. He's also the former Secretary of State in charge of voter fraud. Rotten piece of shit, ultra Conservative. And today he was supporting the expansion of Medicaid. Yes. I'm hearing that all over the country GOP governors and legislators are "softening" on certain healthcare issues. IMO they know healthcare beat the shit out of them and maybe they're trying to appear to care about it. So keep an eye on that, too.

Well, the numbers say that our wealthy distribution is so skewed towards the Rich we haven't seen things this bad since the 1920's. And Social Security Administration is saying 70% of american wage earners are earning less than $50,000 a year. Anecdotally all you have to do is look at how desperate things got for all those government workers who missed just one or two paychecks. They were against the wall. It's disgusting to me that the Republicans oppose decent healthcare, decent wages, living wage, minimum wage increase, what ever you call it.

And pardons compel people to answer truthfully as they admit to whatever they are being pardoned for.

by Anonymousreply 557February 9, 2019 6:18 AM

Yes, R557, to accept a pardon an admission of guilt is required. Once you have done that you can't seek any other protections for the crime for which you've been pardoned. You have to respond to subpoenas, you cannot plead the 5th, and you can be held in contempt and charged for other crimes.

by Anonymousreply 558February 9, 2019 11:58 AM

[quote]Yes, [R557], to accept a pardon an admission of guilt is required.

No, you do not. This is completely not true. You do not have to admit guilt in order to accept a pardon. People need to stop repeating this.

R559,,, I think you're right. I should have said that it is implicit. the very acceptance of a pardon is an admission of guilt. It is not "required that you admit guilt. " I was wrong about that.

r562....If anyone EVER laid a hand on ANY person around Trump, the police would have been called and every media outlet notified and they would be reporting on every aspect of it for days.

One could not write a novel as sordid as all this mess. If a movie is made ten years later, that touches on all this stuff it would be 6 or 8, or 10 hours long?

26 min. into this vid. from an allegedly anonymous male prostitute in a article section posted somewhere earlier. It could be all bogus. Maybe it isn't? Sounds so bizzare.

R559, interpretations of the Burdick decision say otherwise.

[quote]This brings us to the differences between legislative immunity and a pardon. They are substantial. The latter carries an imputation of guilt; acceptance a confession of it. The former has no such imputation or confession. It is tantamount to the silence of the witness. It is noncommittal. It is the unobtrusive act of the law given protection against a sinister use of his testimony, not like a pardon, requiring him to confess his guilt in order to avoid a conviction of it.

R580, that article is one legal interpretation. Other legal scholars disagree. It is not as clear cut as people are implying.

by Anonymousreply 581February 9, 2019 5:17 PM

[quote]Confusing โ€œimputation of guiltโ€ with being an actual legal component to the process. Public assumption, accusations, implications donโ€™t hold water in terms of legal proceedings. The legal right to reject a pardon based on the fact that a person (Burdick, Wilson or otherwise) feels it would appear as though thereโ€™s a pretense, imputation, liability, religious/moral cost, or otherwise, does not mean that by accepting the pardon they are legally admitting guilt.

[quote]From Burdick v. US. This brings us to the differences between legislative immunity and a pardon.

[quote]It is of little service to assert or deny an analogy between amnesty and pardon. Mr. Justice Field, in Knote v. United States, 95 U.S. 149, 153 , 24 S. L. ed. 442, 443, said that โ€˜the distinction between them is one rather of philological interest than of legal importance.โ€™ This is so as to their ultimate effect, but there are incidental differences of importance. They [236 U.S. 79, 95] are of different character and have different purposes. The one overlooks offense; the other remits punishment.

[quote]2. Confusing dicta with holdings. Basically within the decisions of Burdick and Wilsonโ€ฆ thereโ€™s quite a bit of discussion. Some of it is of questionable importance and coherence, but letโ€™s take this completely out of context, ignore the paragraph that follows the one below, and derive meaning from these three sentences aloneโ€ฆ

[quote]This brings us to the differences between legislative immunity and a pardon. They are substantial. The latter carries an imputation of guilt; acceptance a confession of it.

[quote]Okayโ€ฆ this is an excellent example of why the dicta, derived from the latin obiter dictum, or โ€œby the wayโ€, is both an explanation and justification for the courtโ€™s holdings but are not binding decisions, rulings, findings or holdings of the court. Now granted, these decisions were written a long time ago, and thereโ€™s some blurry language, but there is simply no holding that identifies a legal component to the acceptance of a pardon.

R582, just posting the wording of the previous link doesn't make it definitive.

by Anonymousreply 584February 9, 2019 5:29 PM

[quote]Those who refer to the case Burdick v US, from 1915, as deciding that a pardon does imply an admission of guilt have simply not read the decision or do not recognize dicta as being dicta, that is, as not being the holding or a question decided in the case. In Burdick, the man had been tendered a blanket pardon for all crimes arising from the subject inquiries about which his grand jury testimony was sought. Burdick refused to accept the pardon, and, eventually the US Supreme Court reversed his conviction for contempt and ordered his release. Because Burdick refused the offered pardon, the question of the effects of an accepted pardon was never required as part of the decision. Dicta, or statements extraneous to the matters actually decided in a case, are not holdings, the parts of a case which are actually decided by the court. Dicta, essentially, do not count for anything in law.

MYTH NO. 4 Pardons are only for guilty people; accepting one is an admission of guilt.

In 1915, the Supreme Court wrote in Burdick v. United States that a pardon โ€œcarries an imputation of guilt; acceptance a confession of it.โ€ Over the years, many have come to see a necessary relationship between a pardon and guilt. Ford carried the Burdick quote in his wallet, defending the Nixon pardon by noting that it established Nixonโ€™s guilt. More recently, MSNBC host Ari Melber taunted Arpaio by saying he had admitted he was guilty when he accepted Trumpโ€™s pardon.

But Burdick was about a different issue: the ability to turn down a pardon. The language about imputing and confessing guilt was just an aside โ€” what lawyers call dicta. The court meant that, as a practical matter, because pardons make people look guilty, a recipient might not want to accept one. But pardons have no formal, legal effect of declaring guilt.

Indeed, in rare cases pardons are used to exonerate people. This was Trumpโ€™s rationale for posthumously pardoning boxer Jack Johnson, the victim of a racially based railroading in 1913. Ford pardoned Iva Toguri dโ€™Aquino (World War IIโ€™s โ€œTokyo Roseโ€) after โ€œ60 Minutesโ€ revealed that she was an innocent victim of prosecutors who suborned perjured testimony in her treason case. President George H.W. Bush pardoned Caspar Weinberger because he thought the former defense secretary, indicted in the Iran-contra affair, was a victim of โ€œthe criminalization of policy differences.โ€ If the president pardons you because he thinks you are innocent, what guilt could accepting that pardon possibly admit?
