Couldn't you just have bumped the Tiffany thread from just from a few weeks ago?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 30, 2019 5:59 PM |
But since there's this thread, Tiffany was by far at her most entertaining in this episode as purse twirling street hooker who tough talks the abusive pimp. Too funny.
Poor Jaclyn has a massive camel toe in those tight pants. That couldn't have been comfortable.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 30, 2019 6:04 PM |
I think DL talks about Shelley Hack more than any other cast member from CA. We are obsessed.

R18 TV actors rarely have any say in anything. Only if they're producers as well. It's mostly up to the network.

She was the prettiest angel so long as she got to wear her Northeast clothes and hair. That she didn't get to do on Charlie's Angels. They just put her in the same shit style the other girls had and it looked horrible on her. She was her prettiest in the casual preppy look.
I wonder what would have happened if the show went another season without Smith. Poor Cheryl Ladd.
I posted this before in another CA thread but I think a sixth season could've been interesting. Jaclyn would've left, Cheryl would've moved up to top billing followed by Tanya and I think a black actress joining the cast (which had been talked about for years) could've brought fresh attention to the show, though at that point such casting would've viewed as too gimmicky and perhaps backfired, so who knows.

Vapid is the word... and unnatural.
She seemed uncomfortable in her own skin.

R26, I'll never forget that clip that someone posted one time of Tiffany holding a gun. He entitled it..... Do you think Shelly Hack had ever held a gun before?
It was hysterical. I still laugh about it.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 10, 2019 5:18 AM |
Aaron Spelling said even before Season 5 started production, that it would probably be the last. He knew at that point Jaclyn was leaving and that the ratings were dropping quickly. They needed another Season to break the 100 episode mark to get a good syndication deal.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 10, 2019 5:23 AM |
Did Shelly Hack REALLY do her hair and make-up herself the 2nd half of the season? She look SOO much better, she started on the show with an over teased frizzy mop. Poor thing never had a chance. I honestly can't believe the other girls didn't have any say when they decide to hire her.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 10, 2019 5:30 AM |
I think they wanted Hack to flop, I mean releasing such an unflattering photo like this to the press wasn't going to get people enthused about her.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 10, 2019 5:42 AM |
Lord, the fucking wrinkles around her eyes and that limp hair..
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 10, 2019 5:53 AM |
Nolan Miller is in that clip a bit. But in his Television Academy Foundation interview, he talked at length about how when Shelley Hack started, he LOVED her. He loving having such a beautiful woman to dress, and that she made all his creations look good. And for the first couple of weeks she was humble.
He said suddenly, she became very difficult and demanding. He laughed at how quickly it happened, and how different she suddenly became.
I think she does quite a great job in King of Comedy as Fred DeCordova's associate producer. She really captures that personality type- coldly professional. The way she blows off Rupert is perfectly done.

R49 Plus that veiny hand and she's barefoot. She has big, unattractive feet (with a weird scar on one) and has a bandage around her toes. So many unsightly things in that photo.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 10, 2019 4:37 PM |
yes she did do her own hair and makeup later in her season. What that means though is she brought her own person in who knew her look and she had input in how they were doing it. She was a model since she was 14 and made a fortune doing it. She knew how to make herself look good. What she did with a lot of her modeling money was to pay for travel while she was still a teen and then pay for her over the top education. I've forgotten the wheres of her education but it's impressive. The travel that she did as a teen on her own is what impressed me the most. That was probably a big reason to why she didn't fit in. She probably didn't know how to chit chat about Bootsie Gumdrops in the cafeteria. I'm a Shelley Hack troll and love posting in her threads. Her look not fitting in was simply the biggest reason it didn't work out.

R75 Shelley/Tiffany has seemed to picked up fans over the years, and although a smallish group, seem to be very vocal online. See the various CA sites/forums and youtube. She was not very popular when the she was airing at the time. People Magazine noted she came in dead last on their annual poll for TV stars at the time.

by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 13, 2019 1:35 AM |
Season 4 was weak because it was mostly solo Angel episodes, but that wasn’t Shelley’s fault.
One of the all time best episodes was “Angel Hunt” which had all 3 Angels stranded on an island and hunted by a man who has a beef with Charlie (a plot that the first Drew Barrymore film stole from!) And Shelley had an action scene that this gayling re-enacted in the privacy of my room on several occasions!

R90, great clip.
Shelley contradicts almost everything the interviewer says.
Throw her a bone, Tiffany. Geez!
(And the interviewer needs to give Shelley some breathing room. Boy, those chairs were close together.)
by Anonymous | reply 96 | March 13, 2019 2:18 AM |
R91, I agree that that was a very good episode but always felt that scene you posted where the guy knocks out Tiffany and she disappears was just another gimmick cooked up by the writers (on orders from the producers) to cut down on Shelley Hack's screen time and focus most of the episode on Cheryl and Jaclyn.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | March 13, 2019 2:21 AM |
Apparently the first time Jaclyn Smith met Shelley Hack on the set of Angels she turned to Cheryl Ladd within earshot of Shelley and said, 'Didn't we just do a TRANSVESTITE episode?'
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 13, 2019 1:05 PM |
Shelley spoke about that interview at R90 much later and spoke about how after the camera stopped rolling the woman--whose breadth reeked of gin--asked her if she'd ever experimented with a woman and then proceeded to mime scissors on each hand using her index and middle fingers and then grind them against each other.

R97 I wonder if she took acting lessons like Aaron Spelling asked her to do? Boy, that had to be embarrassing for her. She did improve a little later on in the season when they gave her a little more to do. Less stiff in general.
Studying acting with some good acting teachers is never a bad idea. Farrah Fawcett went to NY and studied at HB Studio in the early 80s and managed to turn her career around and be taken seriously as an actress. Of course she had more "name value" going for her that Shelley did to get a big showy roles to prove herself.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 13, 2019 1:48 PM |
R95 Funny you should mention The Stepfather! I just watched it for the first time this past weekend. A bit off topic, and I realize the 80s were a different time, but I was FLOORED when they showed the 15 year old daughter taking a shower with full on ass and tits shots!! Completely gratuitous and unnecessary, it lent nothing to the scene. Shelley was good in it though. Terry O'Quinn was positively terrifying.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 13, 2019 3:41 PM |
The episode in the old fashioned dance club was so embarrassing for poor Tiffany. One scene they say she is in the bathroom. It has no payoff. There is no scene of her speaking with someone there or picking up on a clue on her way back. They just talk without her. No reason she could not be in the scene.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 13, 2019 5:49 PM |

Nowadays they would make it a season-long story arch when an angel leaves. In episode one, she mysteriously disappears. It turns out she has been investigating a cold case. Her brutally tortured body would be found no sooner than episode six or even ten.

I still watch the CA reruns. On MeTV they're currently showing the Tiffany Wells season. OMG! That episode where Tiffany and Kelly had to go undercover as hookers was hysterical. Shelley was so damn campy, strutting down that sidewalk, swinging that purse, and chewing gum like a cow. The editor for that episode must've been drunk or on coke because there were jump cuts all over the place. One sudden close up in particular showed Shelley with this campy shit eating grin. I was DONE! LOL!!!

R114 They also never even try to find her body. To me the funny part of this episode is that at the end, once he finds out they are all alive, Charlie turns his boat around and leaves them on the island with the big cats. It was more important they didn't see his face then their safety.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | March 14, 2019 11:40 AM |

R133 Probably in a vault somewhere. They've never been shown anywhere. I think she filmed two episodes, tops. Hack said they changed her character's personality between episodes and she didn't like the change at all. Obviously the producers didn't like her take on the new version of role, so she left and they recast.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 14, 2019 3:44 PM |
I think the Angels Go Truckin' episode is particularly bad. This was before the producers realized that Tiff was not cutting it with viewers, so she has some things to do in the episode. It's clear they wanted her in the Sabrina Duncan mode (someone who can play campy undercover characters).

As far as I'm concerned Tiffany Welles was a big improvement over Sabrina Duncan who was too manish for my tastes.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | March 15, 2019 10:16 AM |
I remember not really caring for her much in the original episodes. Maybe it was just about me being a moody teen. I lover her now in the MeTV reruns. I lover her look and I think she did a good job. I have a soft spot in my heart for most of the actors that come in as replacements, it's just a tough position to be in.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | March 15, 2019 12:36 PM |
I do love Tiffany but I can admit Shelly Hack can't act and is very stiff, which I find endearing. But didn't they screen test her. They had to have seen it. Watching these episodes again, I think Cheryl Ladd was the best actress of the bunch, given the material. I also think Farrah is better in the episodes she was forced to come back to do then in her season.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | March 15, 2019 1:16 PM |
r150, I do think Kate Jackson was the best in terms of acting but Cheryl Ladd was very good. One of the reasons I took to Cheryl so fast coming in behind Farrah leaving and all the tea spilt from that was her acting ability. Looking at the reruns, I'm reminded of how natural she was. I do agree that Farrah did seem better in the episodes she was forced to do and as we saw, she became an even better actress after that. I mean The Burning Bed. Wow! Jaclyn Smith has always been my favorite angel. Acting wise, she wasn't consistent but she could pull it out sometimes. I really thought her forced heroin addiction episode was her best work.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | March 15, 2019 1:49 PM |
Kate was good but overall I think Cheryl really captured the spirit of the show and made it work. Cheryl's at the Chiller Theatre autograph show in NJ in April. Can't wait.

I believe that Dierdre Hall served as Jaclyn's acting coach for quite some time and vice-versa. They would do scenes together from Shakespeare, Ibsen and Chekov and then afterward give each other notes.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | March 15, 2019 3:22 PM |
Cheryl was the best because she was enjoying what she was doing and the check she was getting out of it. She landed in a pot of jam and she knew it. It came through.

Have there been any updates on crazy cat lady Kate? She really hasn't been working or in the public eye at all in several years. It's wild when you think of what a big star she was and that she was a veteran of 3 major series (Rookies, Angels, Scarecrow) plus plenty of other high profile work.

Kate is still studying her script for Kramer vs. Kramer. Kate's big problem is she was one of those who could never enjoy her success. Not even when she was "best friends" with Olivia Newton John.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | March 16, 2019 4:11 PM |
In addition to her debut episode of CA, Shelley was an actual guest star on “The Love Boat”. She was actually quite funny, playing a scientist who pretends to be an airhead in order to get men interested in her.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | March 16, 2019 4:18 PM |
R167 She was snapped by paparazzi as recently as 2 years ago looking thin and drawn. Tabloids claimed she has/had a pain pill addiction and is a hoarder. She had to sell her nice house and move into smaller place due to money problems.
As much as she worked from the 70s through the 90s, she should be getting a nice pension from SAG. Even if she blew all the money she made of the years, that pension would keep a roof over her head and fed at least.

The original and the Tiffany version openings were the least clunky. Once they got into two went to LA, one in SF, I was like why wasn't Kris in LA, too? Having them spread out made the most sense, but the third version! Yikes! "The other to a top school for modeling...and the each reaped the blah blah...."
I do think that shot of Jaclyn Smith turning her head around in the opening is such a classic shot; what a beauty!
My favorite angel was Sabrina. Kate was really the only one who could act.

r179, that shot is ICONIC! I was a fan of CA during it's 5 year run and watch the MeTV reruns on an almost daily basis. That shot never fails to give me life. Also, watching it in the context of the episode is even better. Kelly gives a sharp elbow to the ribs of a deadly masseuse who tried to sneak up on her, does the iconic hair flip in that classic closeup, then says "I hope you liked your massage Inga." Season 1, Episode 6 - The Killing Kind. One of my favorites.

R188 Most TV stars didn't get paid much back then. Especially on a new series. So, not far fetched. It makes sense Kate made more because she was only one who was really known at that time. Farrah was only known as Lee Majors wife and unproven and Jaclyn was a total unknown.
Tanya Roberts supposedly made $12,000 an episode during the last seasons. I'm sure Jaclyn and Cheryl were making considerable more than she was,

while I didn't buy poor Jaclyn in the 'thugs hook Kelly on cocaine' episode, and I thought Kate was the only one who could pull off playing an undercover character -- 'I want that baby, John - see that I get it' or the naïve fake Janet LeMarr (sp?) in the pilot -- I did think Jaclyn had occasional really solid moments like cracking to the lesbian matron in Angels in Chains 'how long has it been since you've been sprayed?'
I think Spelling said he'd give each of the first four angels a million each if three of them would agree to a reunion movie. I wish that had happened.

R193 Kate and Farrah never wanted to do it. Jaclyn was game and I'm sure Cheryl would've too (and she was very popular with most of the fans of the show, it's too bad they discounted her). They didn't even seem to consider Shelley or Tanya at all. I think Tanya would've done it for sure. But they weren't interested in any other combo.

Compare them to Sharon Stone in [italic]Casino,[/italic] who somehow, even though she was discovered as a de rigueur blonde model bimbo, tore it up as Ginger. It really is a remarkable performance, made up of many varied scenes and moods.

I remember hating that haunted house episode, r213, because of the ending.
At the end of the episode, the team is back at the agency recapping all of the events that occurred at the haunted house. Bosley, typical as ever, offers his skepticism that the house was actually haunted. Suddenly his desk starts rollicking violently to suggest the ghost is not happy at his comments! Does anyone freak out? No, the Angels start laughing at Bosley! Freeze frame to end credits.
Even the ten year old me did a major eye roll at that.

Watching the episodes on MeTv, I was wondering about the Tiffany segment of the opening. Does anyone know if that was the original one for her ? It contains scenes from "Angel Hunt" and "Angels on Campus" that were from the middle of the season. I didn't think they shot that many in advance to have those scenes ready for the premiere.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | March 18, 2019 12:03 PM |
To say nothing of the scene with all the dancing "ghosts" that Tiffany sees, R221. All this highly trained private eye had to do was touch one to tell that they were flesh and blood and the jig would be up. But does this walking rugburn do it? NOPE.

Cheryl and Jaclyn didn't have that much power.
She wasn't very well liked by viewers (especially at the time) had pissed people off behind the scenes and the ratings were dropping fast. Honestly she wasn't the only reason for the drop, but she got most of the blame.
I think they underestimated how important Kate was to the show. She brought some seriousness and legitimacy that kept the show balanced. But I think Season 3 was really when the show started it's decline. There were some bad episodes that Season.

by Anonymous | reply 248 | March 19, 2019 11:51 AM |
One problem with Tiffany is that she was more of a Kelly than a Sabrina. The show needed a Sabrina.
Today starts poor Tiff's last episode (2 parter) where she has the indignity of being in an episode where a guy falls in love with 2 angels and she's not one of them. And then at the end, Kelly and Kris both quit but it's poor Tiffany who doesn't come back. I remember as a kid knowing she wasn't coming back when the episode aired. I thought they were going to kill her off when that bulldozer was going to drop the bricks on her.

Smith got pregnant almost immediately after ANGELS was over. She was 35 when the series finished, which is very different from 35 now. She maintained a bikini body right up to the end of the series, with those S5 eps shot in Hawaii, but she does tend to be much more covered up in her "everyday" costumes from later seasons: full sleeves, blouses up to the neck. And you have to love Kelly's habit of dispensing random beatdowns in S5.
The last episode aired in June 1981 and Smith had her first child in 1982 at age 36--which was late to be having a first child, back then--and another in 1985 at 40.
One big problem according to Leonard Goldberg is that the show was doing the same thing in S5 as it was doing in S1, it didn't really change, and they simply ran out of logical, creative milieus to put the angels into. The Hawaii location shift only helped for a while (HAWAII FIVE-O had been canceled and they wanted to use that location facility but ended up using it for only 7 eps), but then they were back at the office for the end of the season. Also, the timeslot kept changing in S5.
The hours on the series were really long, and several actors who guested on the show have commented that they would shoot really fast, and on film, which was costly. They'd even shoot rehearsal sometimes just to get it done. Whether that was a case of no time or not caring, who knows?
It is remarkable when you watch the series today how much of the exteriors are on location, and not just outside on the backlot. The interiors are studio sets almost always, but the workweek had to be grueling with the location travel, the occasional learning of special skills, plus all the PR and career maintenance. The angels were everywhere back then.
Also there's a real decline in script quality, even by CA standards, in S4 and a feeling of repetitiveness sets in. So many episodes similar to previous ones. So many friends of the angels engaged or married to bad men.
by Anonymous | reply 258 | March 19, 2019 1:17 PM |
R257 It was one of the better episodes that Season. Strange they didn't air until after the November sweeps. They should've bumped Angels on Skates in favor for Angel Hunt.
R258 They should've stayed in Hawaii permanently for Season 5. It freshened up the show some and the Hawaiian episodes were fun. Most of the episodes after returning to the office were lackluster or total duds.

by Anonymous | reply 261 | March 19, 2019 2:19 PM |
I've told this story before but I had a friend who worked in the proximity of the CA world back in the day, and the original plan was to replace Kate Jackson, with Sada Thompson of Family. Sada had a bit of celebrity at that time because of the tv show family, so they shot a series of scenes with just her as Angel Lorraine...I forget whether she was supposed to be Sabrina's mother or not. Anyway, in the end the powers that be, nixed the idea, primarily because Thompson didn't like the wardrobe she was stuck with: twin sets, jeans and pumps, nor did she like all the running she had to do (in pumps, no less!). Also, there was a lot of unexpected sexual tension between Angel Lorraine and Bosley which they thought would throw off the dynamic of the show so they took the safer route and hired Shelley Hack.

That said, I liked Shelley Hack. They were afraid to give her a chance and by the time they did it was over.

A piece of cardboard has more warmth than Shelley Hack. I don't know what the fuck the producers were thinking. They nailed it with Ladd and then colossally bungled it with Hack and Roberts.
by Anonymous | reply 269 | March 19, 2019 3:53 PM |
Shelley was a beautiful woman in that WASP sort of way...but a terrible, terrible actress. But it wasn’t as if Jaclyn and Cheryl were Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Especially Jaclyn. How she got hired for all of those TV movies and miniseries is jaw dropping. And Cheryl Ladd as Grace Kelly? 🙄🙄🙄🙄
by Anonymous | reply 270 | March 19, 2019 3:54 PM |
R269 To be honest, it's very hard to replace a popular actor with someone new and it flops more often than succeeding. They got very lucky with Cheryl. She was a great fit for the show and fans accepted her immediately.
R270 Jaclyn was very popular among a diverse group of people. Back in the 80s, she had one of the highest "Q Scores" on television. That's why she kept getting so much TV work. I'd guess Cheryl's was fairly good also. In a People Magazine 1988 Charlie's Angels retrospective, they quoted an anonymous Hollywood executive that said Cheryl would be his first pick out of all the others that he would've hired for a project.
by Anonymous | reply 271 | March 19, 2019 4:14 PM |
Correct, R270; I don't get it when people slam Shelley's acting and yet Jaclyn and Cheryl had long careers, still working now, I think.
They nailed it with Ladd and then colossally bungled it with Hack and Roberts.
I think it just shows how difficult it was to replace Kate Jackson. She may not have been the lead, technically, but she was the most believable as a detective and she pretty much always played the alpha of the trio. As someone else pointed out, Hack was too much like Jaclyn Smith’s character and it wouldn’t have been logical for her to come in and assume that leader role anyway. Why the writers didn’t recognize that and attempt to move Ladd or Smith in that direction probably reflects how little they thought about the characters. There’s a quote from one of the writers in the Charlie’s Angels Casebook where he had to ask his wife the name of Smith’s character when he was working on a script. And that happened in either the 4th or 5th season. To them the women were interchangeable.
Speaking of opening credits, does anyone know what episode that first shot of Cheryl running down the hill is from ? I can't remember ever seeing it in an episode.
It was the Sammi Davis Jr episode. She was pretending to be a passing jogger but was actually doing security detail at Sammi’s estate as he’d been recently kidnapped. They hired a lookalike to make the kidnappers believe they had the wrong guy.

It's said that for most of season 3, Cheryl and Kate barely had scenes together - sad since they were the two best actresses on the show.
David Doyle always said he thought Cheryl was the best actress.
Cheryl's eyes turned into slits very shortly after Angels ended. I don't know if it was a bad facelift or what, but she never looked the same again.

You had to be a kid/young adult in the mid 70s.
The show was an absolute phenomenon.
Keep in mind, there was no internet, no cell phones, no movies to rent, no video games.
When my nieces and nephews were young I got a kick out of telling them....
Look, when we were kids, we had exactly once chance a year to watch Wizard of Oz, or Rudolph, or the Grinch who Stole Christmas.
If you missed it, you missed it.
Better luck next year.

“And you have to love Kelly's habit of dispensing random beatdowns in S5.”
r258, I lived for those beat downs when I see the S5 reruns. There was the one where Kelly whipped the Asian guy’s ass in his own shop. He blocked all his punches and hauled off and bopped the crap out of him. If that wasn’t enough, she walked up on him like she dared him to take another shot. Dumb ass did and she karate flipped him into the bookshelves. LOL!!!
Then there was that moment when the crook was trying to escape by running around the pool. Kelly met him on the other side and punched him in the stomach like a street thug from The Wire. I love me some Kelly Garrett.
Both episodes are from the ones set in Hawaii. Those Hawaii episodes were pretty good. I loved those Kelly kick ass scenes because it was almost like a throwback to the first season where she was mainly known as the cool collected ass kicking one in the group.

In an apartment building where many of the tenants are prostitutes, someone is killing them, so the owner calls Charlie. Kris and Kelly move in and they have their eye on the creepy guy who works at the nearby restaurant who delivers the food there.

I once read an article by a doctor about unrealistic violence in movies. One thing he pointed out was (aside from people not dying immediately after being shot) that if you knock someone unconscious, you may well have given them brain damage.
But people in dramas are always getting hit on the head, then coming to with a slight headache.

Julie got off to a good start, but then they made character very inconsistent. They should've had the character kept the tough edge she had at first. Tanya Roberts was willing to be physical and did most of own stunts on the show (like Kate Jackson).
by Anonymous | reply 322 | March 20, 2019 10:33 PM |
I found Julie to be an odd choice - she was a sexpot with more T&A to get male viewers, but she came off as dumb. The reason Cheryl Ladd was so successful is that men AND women liked her and she seemed smart (actually a lot smarter than Jill) enough to solve mysteries.
Smart is never a word that I would use to describe Julie.

I just think Shelley was their idea of a perfect girlfriend. Pretty, sophisticated, and highly intelligent. She would love them for who they were because she was so intelligent. Fine. That didn't necessarily equal a great actress. I think they all just thought they would be her Svengali and bring out that one perfect performance they all though she had. Shelley was fine when she was playing Shelley: King of Comedy.

R358 They sure made Jaclyn and Cheryl look matronly at times towards the end. It didn't help Tanya looked noticeable younger than both. Funny thing is that Tanya is actually two years older than Cheryl. Tanya shaved several years off her age. She could pull it off because she looked younger than her age. One newspaper writer joked about how she was 26 in 1980 and still managed to stay the same age two years later when she was doing Beastmaster press.
by Anonymous | reply 365 | March 22, 2019 4:56 AM |
You could make the case that Jaclyn Smith was technically the most beautiful of the angels, but 1 deadbeat actress was all that show could carry. She was incredibly placid. Kate, Farrah and Cheryl had a certain spark that livened up the paper thin material.
Subtler (cough cough) ones like Shelley and Tanya just didn't bring enough to the party, no matter how attractive.
by Anonymous | reply 366 | March 22, 2019 5:15 AM |

You're better off buying the complete series for under $30. I remember there was a long delay before season 4 was finally released on DVD. Someone claimed Shelley Hack was holding up the release but I think it's more likely Sony didn't trust there would be much consumer interest in the lackluster final 2 seasons. Season 5 is only available online as a made-on-demand burned DVD-R collection but you get legit pressed discs for all 5 seasons if you buy the complete series.

R383 I always heard that's why they didn't release it, because Season 4 and 5 are seen as disappointments by many CA fans. Supposedly they rushed it when they did to capitalize on Farrah Fawcett's death. If not it, probably would've been released much later, maybe along with Season 5.

Kate wasn't afraid to speak up and tell them what she need to be improved to make the show better. Mainly the scripts. She'd even go off if press was on set - she didn't care. People Magazine recounted a fit Kate threw when they were on set early during season two to do a story on Cheryl Ladd joining the show. I linked it below.
Kate: “Why do I have to say this garbage? This is shit, shit, shit.”
She got even worse during season three, when they would let have time off to do the movie Kramer vs Kramer. She threw a huge tantrum during the episode Marathon Angels, which had a thin script even for the shows standards and was basically an excuse to show a bunch of women running in tight shirts and shorts bouncing around. That might have been the straw the broke the camels back.

Liz Smith certainly had a hard-on for Barbara Bach in that article. I wonder how/if she followed up once Hack was announced instead.

The reported final 5 finalists for Season 5 new Angel. Mostly relative unknowns.
Tanya Robert's (who we know ultimately got the part)
Jayne Kennedy (probably the best known one at the time, was considered as Farrah's replacement also)
Cornelia Sharpe (a Faye Dunaway look-a-like)
Irena Ferris (was mostly known a model at the time, kinda looked like a blonde version of Tanya back then)
Susie Coelho (british actress, best known as Sonny Bono's girlfriend)
by Anonymous | reply 402 | March 24, 2019 4:04 AM |
R401 Not that I can find. She seemed pretty sure about Barbara having the role, someone high up must've told her that. I seen an article where Leonard Goldberg confirmed Barbara was indeed one of the ones considered, out of the 75 they screen tested. He said no decision had been made yet (which was correct).
Claudia Jennings was rumored to have been a front runner as well for Aaron Spelling anyway, but ABC didn't want her since she was a Playboy Playmate.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | March 24, 2019 4:10 AM |
I love Jennings but I don't know if she would have been a good fit either. Too similar in looks/stature to Cheryl Ladd and with even more of the softcore (?) porn quality that made Tanya seem out of place.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | March 24, 2019 4:41 AM |
Boy, the press was off on their bets for Season 5 as well. They believed Susie Coelho would land the gig. I bet Sonny Bono resented Tanya when he filmed his Season 5 guest spot, for snagging the role of Julie over his girlfriend Susie.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | March 24, 2019 4:53 AM |
at the end of the day, Kate was irreplaceable; Farrah was not as we learned with Cheryl.
Kate brought intelligence, acting ability and gravity to the whole 'beautiful women as private eyes' thing.
Once Kate left, the show was doomed to fail; season 4 was glamorous. I liked Shelley. I guess I'm one of the few. But Tanya? She would have been the most believable after Kate as a cop. But they made her a model.
by Anonymous | reply 406 | March 24, 2019 5:05 AM |
Yes, they needed at least one person to believable as a cop/private detective. Kate was that.
I read in another newspaper article they told Jayne Kennedy that she was too tall, especially next to Cheryl and that's why they didn't ultimately pick her.
Apparently Priscilla Barnes made it pretty far too, according to the same article. I think she might have been a good choice. She was a bit sophisticated, but could be tough also and good enough actress that she could handle the material without any problems.
The guy who wrote this article manages to take a shot somehow at every person he mentions! What a bitch (although he's often right)!

It wasn’t lack of Kate, it was the lousy scripts.
I read somewhere that Joanna Cassidy auditioned too. She might have been interesting. She played a villain in Season 5 in one of the Hawaii episodes.

Liz Smith was full of shit.
Jaclyn signed a five year contract and stayed the whole time. She got raises but didn’t resign.
She did her five and then was out. If the show continued it would have without her.

Jaclyn was such a boring person. I mean, there’s absolutely nothing notable about her besides her looks ... and that low, mellow voice that’s like a liquid sleeping pill.

Irena Ferris married Mike Medavoy and she's a true Hollywood wife.
She and her hubby were Obama supporters and spent a weekend at the White House where they had to reveal actual birthdates and I think it was discovered Irena had shaved about 9 years off her actual age.

Is it true they were bringing back a 'reformed' Margo after Shelley Hack's departure? I seem to recall there was quite a bit of buzz about this at the time, something along the lines that Margo would have done her time and then come back and helped out the Angels as part of her parole agreement. I think that would have been good.

They really did Julie a disservice by giving her that ridiculous opening. The first part was to show the Angels learning their skills, shooting, self defense, defensive driving. Julie gets walking with a book on her head. They present her as a joke from the start.
by Anonymous | reply 447 | March 29, 2019 5:14 PM |
They should've just brought Tanya on as tough cop from NY. She played a cop with Michelle Phillips in an episode of Vega$, which was apparently considered a potential new show for the network but never got off the ground. Aaron Spelling remembered her from that episode, which probably tipped the scale with her getting cast on the show.
They decided to mostly just having her be TNA though. The times when they let Julie be tough and physical, she showed real potential.

I love how in that episode, they are suppose to be finding a kidnapped guy, other girls are getting taken, and the Angels are back at the office in their swimsuits. I've noticed rewatching the Julie episodes that she got way more to do then poor Tiffany. Even when Julie was taken, they tried to save her, not let her float down the river.

The fight choreographer for CA was brilliant! The fight at R452 is almost as realistic as the one with Margo and Kelly wherein Kelly hits Margo, who reacts about 10 seconds later proceeds to shamble over to the mud puddle, pause for another ten seconds and then proceeds to slowly 'fall'/sit down before finally lying down in the mud puddle and begin groaning.

I remember how disappointed I was with all of Farrah’s guest appearances in Seasons 3 and 4. The storylines were boring and there wasn’t enough interaction between her and the other actresses.
And the hair! I hated the hair! Farrah never looked good in any other hairstyle other than her trademark ‘do. On the other hand, I’ve never seen any other actress pull off the Farrah ‘do well.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | March 31, 2019 5:04 PM |

While "Angels in Chains" is iconic, the season 4 prison episode "Caged Angels" is great too. Kris goes undercover for this one and is harassed by predatory, obese lesbian Big Aggie (Shirley Stoler). DL icon Sally Kirkland also stars as tall, clumsy lesbian Lonnie.

"Start shucking, down to the pink. Just pretend I'm your mama."

A friend of mine did hair and makeup in the 70s, and the talk amongst professionals back in the day was that Jaclyn Smith had the ideal face.

R486 That one isn't a bad episode either. Probably the best episode after they returned to LA after "Angels on the Line" and "Attack Angels". Julie has a good scene where she tells the guy with the pipe "Drop it, or you'll go down with it!" and she means it.

Farrah looks like she doesn't want to be there, and a bit drugged, in the return episodes.

As has been pointed out many times though when you put Shelley in a proper style for her she clearly is the standout. So long as it is still photography. Sabrina is the only character who was strong from the beginning to the end of her run.
Jill was great S1 but all of her subsequent guest appearances sucked. Kelly was the tough brunette with a mysterious background in S1 but became full time PTA mom by S4. Kris was cute during her first 1 &1/2 seasons but was indistinguishable from Kelly by S4. They also stylized her in a way that aged her about ten years. Tiffany and Julie were consistent but weak because of poor utilization and bad storylines.

My mother with dementia saw her and said "Is she a man?" LOL

I'm still reeling from the Beamish episode.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | April 4, 2019 9:45 PM |
Damn writers strike shortened the final season.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | April 4, 2019 9:46 PM |
R540 your mother is a better detective than Ms. Kelly 'how did you get this number?' Garrett.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | April 4, 2019 9:49 PM |
Factor, Paul Factor. Very strange
by Anonymous | reply 546 | April 4, 2019 9:49 PM |
Paul Factor is preoccupied with the word pretty.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | April 4, 2019 9:50 PM |
R545, i know, right? LOL

by Anonymous | reply 556 | April 4, 2019 10:27 PM |
Will somebody do a part 2? Tiffany and Company?
by Anonymous | reply 557 | April 4, 2019 10:31 PM |
I sure hope so!
by Anonymous | reply 558 | April 4, 2019 10:32 PM |
When Charlie died he left the agency to Tiffany. She's going to reunite all the angels. They'll be Charlie's Golden Angels.
by Anonymous | reply 559 | April 4, 2019 10:34 PM |
Sabrina was not invited. Too butch.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | April 4, 2019 10:46 PM |
Lee is gay - surprised more people aren't aware of that. She needed a career boost - he needed a beard.
by Anonymous | reply 562 | April 5, 2019 12:45 AM |
I knew, I knew!
by Anonymous | reply 563 | April 5, 2019 12:47 AM |
Please. No homosexual husbands on a Tiffany Welles thread.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | April 5, 2019 12:51 AM |
Lee wasn't gay. He worshiped Barbara Stanwyck!
by Anonymous | reply 565 | April 5, 2019 1:05 AM |
Please, Robert. No pass around bottoms on a Tiffany Welles thread either.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | April 5, 2019 11:01 AM |
No, that’s belongs in the Julie Rogers thread.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | April 5, 2019 11:03 AM |
Favorite recipes for spam belong in the Julie Rogers thread too.

With everything Kelly has been through, why was she so upset about phone calls. She's been shot, hunted on an island, kidnapped multiple times, almost drowned, had her car explode multiple times, Beamish. But a voice on the phone sends her over the edge.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | April 5, 2019 12:27 PM |
Well a girl can only take so much
by Anonymous | reply 570 | April 5, 2019 12:31 PM |
r569 those were my thoughts too. It's like bitch, this isn't squat.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | April 5, 2019 12:42 PM |
I liked her better when she was selling Charlie perfume.
by Anonymous | reply 572 | April 5, 2019 1:52 PM |
Sad to hear Margo committed suicide in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 573 | April 5, 2019 6:36 PM |
Is Lee Majors really gay?? I googled it and it seems inconclusive. Holy shit I feel like my childhood was a lie!
by Anonymous | reply 574 | April 5, 2019 6:53 PM |
Who was Margo - Paul Factor?
by Anonymous | reply 575 | April 5, 2019 8:59 PM |
Fucking Chorus Line Angels is today’s episode! 🤢
by Anonymous | reply 576 | April 5, 2019 9:04 PM |
There's someone here that doesn't know Lee Majors is gay and for a short period sold his ass?
by Anonymous | reply 577 | April 6, 2019 12:05 AM |
Why did they show that shitty dance routine twice at the end?
by Anonymous | reply 578 | April 6, 2019 12:08 AM |
check
by Anonymous | reply 579 | April 6, 2019 12:11 AM |
David Doyle told them to. Pals fuckers and friends to the end. And stupid Nancy Fox was in this episode!
by Anonymous | reply 580 | April 6, 2019 12:12 AM |
r574 - Rock Hudson himself befriended and dated Lee when he was in college and then brought him out to Hollywood. Although Lee seemed to have that cleansed from his official A&E Biography
by Anonymous | reply 581 | April 6, 2019 12:14 AM |
I like this picture. You knew dad knew what was going on. Lee was EXACTLY Rock's type. A lot of other players on the football team got pimped too.
by Anonymous | reply 582 | April 6, 2019 12:16 AM |
Yes , was this Nancy’s third appearance?
Who did she have the dirt on to keep showing up?
by Anonymous | reply 583 | April 6, 2019 12:17 AM |
Was Lee adopted, cause he sure looks better than his parents.
by Anonymous | reply 584 | April 6, 2019 12:19 AM |
R583 Nancy Fox was a long-time friend of Jaclyn Smith's, so that's why she showed up so much on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 585 | April 6, 2019 12:26 AM |
I wish Nancy Fox and Jaclyn Smith had never even known each other!
by Anonymous | reply 586 | April 6, 2019 12:31 AM |

I wonder if that whore, Julie's thread is about to close with 600 posts. Funny. Our Tiff is the only Angel that can close out a thread.
by Anonymous | reply 589 | April 6, 2019 2:37 AM |
r525, Jaclyn's trying to hide her massive camel-toe.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | April 6, 2019 3:24 AM |
At least Sabrina had something else to fall back on if the detective thing didn't work out.
by Anonymous | reply 592 | April 6, 2019 3:45 AM |
Did they ever explain how Kelly's car exploded so many times and then reappeared in front of the office by the end of the episode? Did Charlie purchase in bulks and kept replacements in storage?
by Anonymous | reply 594 | April 6, 2019 4:04 AM |
Unaired footage from the Season 4 episode where Kelly is injected with heroin.
by Anonymous | reply 595 | April 6, 2019 4:07 AM |
The was the first time in a long time I've seen the Margo episode. 3 things that stand out for me.
1. That crazy bitch Margo fell into that mud puddle HARD! I cracked up! LOL!!!
2. Damn Kris. She was a true pioneer in the art of snatching wigs. She actually, well, snatched wigs. She just walked up and snatched Margo's wig off so nonchalantly. Hilarious!
3. Kelly Garrett. GURL! She's always been my favorite angel but as others have pointed out, she's been through much worse. That little collapse she did in Bosley's arms was just doing too much.
