Great title op!
the previous thread mentioned an internment camp for all the scumbags involved. That would be a wonderful punishment. They should keep a camera on them 24 hours a day for extra humiliation.

Big cracks are starting to show in Trump’s support base. Ann Coulter excoriating him, others on Twitter agreeing with him. Rush Limbaugh, too.
And that’s just because of the wall.
Once his legal and congressional problems get really out of control, he’s going to be branded a disaster and his approval ratings will nosedive. Once he gets down to 25% support, will the Senate *still* not vote to convict?

Like I mentioned in another thread, Democrats only need one talking point about wall: He said Mexico would pay for it.

not sure if it's been posted but there is a go fund me for the fucking wall! it has 2million in 3 days!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 20, 2018 5:13 AM |
A supporter of President Trump’s border wall proposal has started a GoFundMe to help pay for the project — and the fund skyrocketed to nearly $2 million on Wednesday night after being live for just three days.
Kolfage’s wrote on his fundraising page that if every Trump voter donates $80 to his wall-building campaign, they will raise $5 billion needed to build the border wall.
“Even if we get half, that’s half the wall. We can do this,” Kolfage wrote on the GoFundMe page.
As of Wednesday night, the campaign had raised nearly $2 million, with large and small donations pouring in nearly every minute.
Kolfage assured donors that he has contacted the Trump administration and every penny of their donations would go to funding the “Trump wall.” –– ADVERTISEMENT ––
“We have many very high level contacts already helping,” he wrote.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 20, 2018 5:25 AM |
R32 is correct. The GOP will throw blame to the Democrats--majority in the House and enough numbers in the Senate to prevent the GOP from having a supermajority. The "both sides" media will bend over backwards to not call the GOP on their shit, and the narrative will flourish. "Dems not reaching across the aisle." "Dems overreaching on going after Trump and not focusing on the economy." "Dems in disarray." "Dems don't have a plan for 2020." And so on.

Someone should suggest to Trump that he can fully fund his wall by auctioning off the right to slap his fucking face.

Much of "the wall" would have to be built within private property.
So if SOMEHOW all the money for "the wall" comes from private donations, and the Trump administration tries to assert eminent domain, GOOD LUCK, ASSHOLES.
God when will this nightmare be over — it's worse than I feared on Election Night.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 20, 2018 5:52 AM |
Cards Against Humanity bought a huge piece of land that would be needed for any wall and contracted with lawyers who specialize in eminent domain laws to tie Trump up in court for years if it ever gets that far.

I'm beginning to think Michael Moore was correct all along. He said Dump will not leave the White House. I also think I blame all of this on the Republican Party. None of this would've happened if they'd stuck to regular order. Dump should have been impeached long ago and the past two years have been nothing but a power grab for Repugs.
We seriously need to focus on a 'clawback' of any and all things that has happened under this unlawful regime. We're gonna have to see many R's in jail over the years as this matter unwinds itself--yes, it will take years! I'm not sure the Dems have it in them....

by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 20, 2018 7:40 AM |
the best part about the wall nonsense is that there also are Trump voters who live right on the border and they're concerned the government will take some of their land to build it lol
by Anonymous | reply 52 | December 20, 2018 9:11 AM |
to the poster who said any drop in the economy will be blamed on the Dems, you're right. For whatever reason, a lot of the public doesn't seem to understand that economies do not rise or fall overnight. The stock market of course can but that is not the economy. Just like repub voters and some independents blamed a slow economy on Obama (who inherited a Bush recession), they credit Trump for the last 2 years and will blame a change in the House majority if things go badly
Morons like Chuck Todd don't help either and I don't even need to discuss the propaganda on Fox
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 20, 2018 9:13 AM |
What I’d like to know is, why did Ann Coulter turn on Trump? Her livelihood depends on Deplorables. Democrats are not buying her books and supporting her.
As obnoxious as she is, most of what she says is designed to get controversy and attention so she can get gigs on Republican venues. Most of the stuff she says is propaganda that appeals to the Trump voter. No way would criticizing Trump help her there. And no legitimate news organization would hire her no matter how much she criticized Trump.
So why attack Trump now? I can imagine Deplorables would say, she’s kicking him while he’s down. But it in spite of her public persona, I bet she’s well connected. Bill Maher claims she’s not as much as a loose cannon as she pretends to be, she’s just cynically exploiting Deplorables for money. So why shoot herself in the foot like this?
Megan Kelly asked Trump one question and it was curtains for her in the Deplorable arena, after being their poster girl for years. Coulter can’t jump sides like Kelly did. She’s too loathed.
My bet is she knows Trump will soon be gone and wants to be on the right side. But the problem is, once the GOP are no longer catering to Deplorables, and try to consolidate members of the old GOP back into the fold, to try to get some power back from Democrats, those people aren’t really her fan club either.
My bet is Coulter knows something we don’t. She’s the thermometer that takes the temperature of the GOP.

"My bet is she knows Trump will soon be gone and wants to be on the right side."
Totally agree, R54. And we are going to be seeing a lot of this in the coming weeks and months, as the rats begin leaving the sinking ship.
Another group to keep an eye on are people like Pat Toomey, R from PA. He's kept a very low profile re: Trump, careful never to make a negative comment on him, so when the shit finally hits the fan he can say he never really was a supporter of the President. Complete and total bullshit, as Toomey has supported Trump and his policies every step of the way.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 20, 2018 11:23 AM |
Coulter has criticized Trump before. I forget what she said, but there were lots of oohs and aahs that she had turned on Trump. Then she went back to praising him again. Not a big deal.

by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 20, 2018 12:07 PM |
Well, based on what R39 posted they only need another 9,000 days of fundraising at $2 million per day to finally hit the $18, 000,000,000 wall cost estimate.
And if it’s true the wall would actually cost $40,000,000,000 then that GoFuckMe Fund needs another 20,000 days of donations.
Good luck with that!

Ann Coulter just doesn't want to compromise her own brand. Her brand is hard right; she's against "immigration" (i.e. of Latinos) and exploits the "Wall" to this end, so any wishy-washiness on that will meet her adamant dissent. Likewise the retreat from Syria doesn't meet her approval.
But this dissent of hers is only the latest. She's been going back and forth on Trump, because of his immigration policy, for the last two years.

The House Dems can hold hearings to uncover whatever he tries to suppress. In many ways it would be better for him to leave Mueller alone--Mueller does his job responsibly and without leaks. Politicians don't work the same way.

by Anonymous | reply 87 | December 20, 2018 5:24 PM |
If worse comes to worse, can the House hire or appoint Mueller to do the same job with a different title? Or can they only question him about what he’s already seen and done?

Trump refusing to sign bill to keep gov't. open
by Anonymous | reply 89 | December 20, 2018 6:11 PM |
There are serious problems here. The attorney general can prevent the release of Mueller's report. In that case, Mueller would not have the authority to give the report to House. In addition, if the House hires Mueller, he would not have the power and authority he has as special prosecutor. Of course, this is the reason that Mueller is essentially releasing his report piece by piece in his court filings.

I kind of feel like the Trump family of criminals will try to get away with a lot of shit during the holidays when they think no one will notice.
I mean, just this week, he's doing Putin's bidding and no one is doing anything about it.

Trump will try to brainwash his followers into thinking it’s great that he’s playing with families’ paychecks at Christmastime. Something about they’re all losers and don’t deserve to be paid, probably.

R90 that's a huge concern. All the "don't worry about Whitaker" people are too optimistic. I'm hoping he's forced to play nicely as he's also under investigation for that fraud scandal in Florida...not sure if the House Dems can do something about that too.
and Barr will be a concern too
by Anonymous | reply 94 | December 20, 2018 6:20 PM |
Adam Schiff will subpoena people to appear and it will be great. Maxine Waters will show us Donald's tax returns. Get your popcorn.
In the real world congress investigates and these investigations are televised. The Republicans refused to investigate and when they did question people it was behind closed doors.
Mueller's investigation and Mueller himself was a compromise because the Republicans would not do their job.
Trump cannot shut down the house, no matter how hard Whittaker huffs and puffs.

Thank you, R95. Today Joyce Vance tweeted a reminder to remember the names of every person who has tried to obstruct Justice in this mess. Beyond justice for criminals, I want accountability. Democrats are going to have to get real.
Somewhere today I read that if Conservatives cannot remain in power democratically, then they will dismantle democracy rather than evolve.
by Anonymous | reply 96 | December 20, 2018 6:59 PM |
I'd rather have Mueller release everything than wait for Congress to have hearings. I think too many members of the GOP will either refuse to cooperate or say they don't recall anything they're being questioned about while they're on the stand.

I think the Mueller investigation is safe. So much is now known. There must be some Republican senators with enough foresight to know they’re going to have to save themselves in 2020 and will want to separate themselves from the hardcore Trump cult.

There are serious problems here. The attorney general can prevent the release of Mueller's report. In that case, Mueller would not have the authority to give the report to House.
While I'm not denying this is a problem, let's also remember Mueller was the only prosecutor able to put John Gotti in prison. He's got a serious skill set.
One thing he could do is essentially put his whole report in charges or sentencing recommendations.

John Brennan on Twitter: Okay, Republicans. How much longer are you going to let this farcical “presidency” continue? At a time of such political, economic, and geo-strategic turbulence—both nationally and globally—are you waiting for a catastrophe to happen before acting? Disaster looms!
Chris Leighton on Twitter: @NancyPelosi @SenMajLdr This will cause a huge market reaction tomorrow....this should be considered. Perhaps not opening it is a good option. Mattis has basically stated Trump has aligned himself with Russia and abandoned his allies. It is time for #impeachment.

Bob Corker could only laugh at Republicans’ predicament as President Donald Trump vowed not to sign the Senate's stopgap spending bill. He laughed harder still when Ted Cruz walked by and insisted the party must fund the border wall.
The retiring GOP senator seemed almost punch-drunk on the chaos of the last few days as Trump again threatens a shutdown over border wall funding that Democrats simply won't give him. But Corker said there was little to do other than sit back, watch the shutdown circus and keep a good sense of humor.
“Well, why not?” Corker responded when asked about his laughter. “You can’t make this stuff up. Y’all have fun.” ...
In their view, they’ve done their job and now it’s up to the House and the president to work something out. In theory, the Senate could come back Friday to vote on a bill providing Trump with his $5 billion for the border wall; it would almost certainly either be defeated or the wall funding would be stripped out. But the Senate GOP seems unworried about the day ahead and the potential for a partial shutdown in 24 hours.
More than half of the 51-member conference has skipped town and they were all caught flat-footed by the president’s news.

Trump is frantically trying to appear to fulfill the promises that he made to his base and to Putin before the Republican majority in the House evaporates. Therefore he's scrambling to do something about the Wall, and ordering the withdrawal of troops from Syria and Afghanistan. He's like someone trying to finish a term paper at the last minute.

One of the problems, as I understand it, is that Trump can't even do a government shutdown right. Most federal agencies and programs have funding to go through February of next year at least; only about one-fourth of the federal government will actually shut. Obviously, many people will still be affected, but it's not threatening enough to force Congress to pass a veto-proof spending bill.

That way Trump, McConnell and Ryan can say see? we wanted the bill but the House Democrats blocked us! Even though Trump was caught on camera saying he'd own the shutdown they will obviously blame Democrats. It's a last minute pathetic "strategy". We all knew this was going to be ugly. This is our just desserts for not being proactive, voting, being complacent, blahblahblah. AND I realize many of you don’t fit that profile — for you, this is just not fair, it’s just the hand you were dealt. Much of life is not fair, much of what happens is the whim of the Gods.
At this point, it’s like we are on a jetliner going down. It’s going to feel really scary. Maybe really really scary. But the plane is *not* going to crash. Just close your eyes, hold my hand, we will get through it. Hopefully it won’t go on for too long, but realistically, it will be a few more weeks/months of this chaos.
If strong rumors are true, Mueller is prepped to release findings in early February. That is not based on leaks from SC, it’s apparently based on preliminary communications that are necessary between SC and USAG’s office. I can’t confirm this, but sources like Ken Dilanean reported this tonight. Hang on you whores!!!! That mother fucker is like the nastiest, pussiest, most infected zit you’ve ever had. Mueller is a picker, and he’s about to pop this zit.

Amazing, Pt. II.
"But a faction of QAnon supporters has become convinced of an idea that stands out for being ridiculous, even by the standards of QAnon-world. A number of QAnon believers have become convinced that John F. Kennedy Jr. faked his death in 1999, and now shows up at Trump rallies in disguise.
Now someone is taking advantage of that ludicrous belief. For months, a Twitter account called “TheRealRAnon” has been posing as a man some QAnon believers think is actually Kennedy.
In fact, the Twitter account appears to be run by a former Green Party congressional candidate in Arizona who makes money off QAnon supporters through Amazon affiliate links."

R268, I concur. It’s going to be bloodier and more violent that we dared to dream. But they deserve a fucking ass kicking. The millions of people who love this country, including people I don’t even agree with (Steve Schmidt?), are NOT going to just hand over the keys and waltz away. It’s not happening. The reckoning is finally here. Everyone stay strong, stick together, know that we are part of the good fight.
Most Americans (by far) agree with us, we outnumber them. Remember that we are the majority when we’re on here debating ideas that we see differently — of course it’s hard to know who is a troll and who isn’t. But try not to let your paranoia overpower you all the time, try not to let the paranoia make you forget that most on this site are not trolls and agree with you in the grand scheme. We all believe in freedom, justice, and liberty for all people regardless of race, gender, orientation, religion, creed, or even political party (that last one is tough for me). We believe in a government that is built by the people, for the people. That is what we all believe in, anything that interferes with those values needs to be called out.

not a question of paranoia r273. not feeling paranoia at all. I think we are on the verge of a better world. I have faith in this incoming Congress, as long as we all keep our eye on the ball. Can I just say how much I hate these traitorous bastards who flip and give evidence to get a lighter sentence - and then afterwards try and weasel out of it and will not acknowledge they’ve even broken laws - let alone behaved in a treasonous manner. All for money. And they want fucking sympathy! I’m looking at you General Flynn!
But the one who chaos my ass right now is fucking coffee-boy Pappodopolous (? Spelling? Who cares!) - is there any chance that he might later get rounded up again and have to answer to other charges? Really - he had two freaking weeks! I really want him to rot in prison along with the others. His hypocrisy and then pretending to be a good boy really - nothing was his fault and he’s been ill-used - to his arrogance and open contempt for the law and how unrepentant he is - he makes my blood boil.
I just hope they have more dirt on him and can add some more charges later on - and no need to get anything from him in return for a plea deal. Just prison. Lots and lots of prison.

The 2013 Cruz shutdown cost the economy 27 billion dollars in lost output, a loss of .06% of GDP
With the market tanking,
with the Fed raising rates again,
with the explosion in the national debt,
Trump cannot afford a .6% hit of the GDP.
If a Bear Market arises and there is an uptick in unemployment...GOODBYE TRUMP.
Also, if Mueller is set to release his report the middle of February, one way to make sure that it becomes public is for Mueller to UNSEAL the sealed indictments.
The shit will hit the fan at the speed of light.

But, in a tiny recess in the back of my mind, I'm hoping we display good judgement so that when we have a Democratic President in 2020, she/he will have all the power possible to get rid of these treasonous Republicans and the Republican Party for good.

I gotta say that events of the last 24 hours or so have left me kinda stunned. Sooooo much going on! But there’s one little thing that really gets to me when I think about it:
We know she’s an idiot and love to make fun of her here - but Anne fucking Coulter turns out to be one of the most powerful people in the country just now. And she’s not wielding her powers for good!
I mean - just think about the mischief she’s wrought with her comments on Fox the other night...now the government will quite probably shut down. Great going horseface!
So yeah - I wonder if she’s realised now just how powerful she at this moment in time? And if she has - will she try and flex her influence- muscles some more?
And finally - do you think she really believes the shit she spouts? Is it all driven by a fierce ideology? Or is it all just a schtick deigned to appeal to a group of people, which she’s learnt to monterize. I do hope someone behind the scenes is examining her back accounts and tax records and is keeping tabs on who she’s communicating with! Think that could be really interesting...

It's ANN Coulter, R301—no final E for her! And maybe we could start calling her "vote-fraud criminal Ann Coulter." It could get as much traction as Cockgobbler Aaron Cock and bring national attention to the sadly neglected area of right-wing voter fraud.
by Anonymous | reply 303 | December 21, 2018 11:13 AM |
Coulter is a fringe player. She matters until she doesn't. MAGAs like her until she disagrees with them, then they laugh her off. "She's nuts but she's family."
What is most concerning right now, is the fact that our Secretary of Defense is going. We have no Attorney General, no Chief of Staff in the White House and our Homeland Security is in complete disarray. Putin is definitely calling the shots. Definitely encouraging Trump to shut down the government , being "sympathetic" and supportive, giving "advice" to his friend, Donald.
The moment this new Attorney General is confirmed, he is going to shut down Mueller, or severely limit his inquiry. Trump will/is probably pressuring Whitaker to do the dirty work, so that the new AG comes in clean. If they can get Whitaker to do it, they can dump him and hang this around his neck. He may be stupid enough to think if he does shut Mueller down, Trump will reward him, but the outcry and the taint will be so strong Whitaker will be damaged goods and he'll get buried.
It is my fear that we were the subjects of a "soft takeover" and now the noose is tightening and things will get hard. Trump is going wild. There a re no brakes on this high speed run away train. My hope is that Mueller indicts McConnell, or that some how measures a re taken for McConnell to reverse course or for him to get removed from his post. He is blocking anything resembling pushback against Trump/Putin.

Yes, absolutely. Happens all the time, often in large-scale drug conspiracies and RICO cases. But, it will even happen in smaller cases, such as where defendants A and B go on a crime spree and start robbing convenience stores.

In fact he probably will go to Florida AND shut down the government because.... he doesn't give a fuck. The news media and a lot of other people keep judging his behavior and his antics in the context of a "president." He doesn't know what that is. He neither understands or likes anything about government, about the Law or about Congress. He will never get it. He will never change. He will never care. If you told him that our country would be destroyed on December 23rd if he doesn't sign the legislation, he would not care. His first reaction would be, "Who can I blame?" R295 we won’t even enjoy this holiday season. I posted this on another thread.... I truly believe that America will break mentally this holiday. Dump should have taken a break until after The holiday to let heads cool re the budget. Inead, he’s going to ruin everyone’s Christmas by playing this out. He so afraid of being called a chicken by the likes of Ann Coulter that he won’t yield. The holiday, already stressful, will be stressed by multiples. Americans don’t like people messing with their Christmas. This is a big tactical error by Dump (has he gotten anything right).

He listens to and follows fox news marching orders for Christ sake. Who but a stupid hateful idiot does that?
Now we're all up in arms about Syria and shut downs, along with other dangerous crap. They're getting ready to drill for oil in the Arctic. The evil does not stop while we're appalled by the most recent shiny objects.
trump is an ugly twisted monster who truly does not care about this country, it's natural environments, or the people who reside within. Why should he? He belongs to an almost untouchable criminal class wealthy beyond belief, using their wealth to marginalize everyone while they party likes it's 1785.
I am distraught over this. I swear more than I ever did, I feel more disgust than I ever did. I can't believe everyone who comes into trump's line of vision doesn't shout "Liar! Liar! Lying criminal!!" at him. His supporters are stupid, hateful, and greedy. When did this country get so depraved?

"The former U.N. diplomat accused of helping steal and distribute Republican fundraiser Elliot Broidy's emails is entitled to diplomatic immunity, the U.S. government tells NBC News.
It's the latest blow to Broidy's legal campaign against Qatar and the individuals he says hacked him on its behalf. Several other defendants in lawsuits filed by Broidy including Qatar itself have already convinced the court to dismiss them from the case, which criss-crosses the murky worlds of cybercrime, the Persian Gulf diplomatic crisis and pay-to-play politics in Trump era.
Broidy, the Republican National Committee's former deputy finance chair, is suing Jamal Benomar, a British citizen born in Morocco. Broidy accuses Benomar of being a "key player" in a Qatari scheme to hack Broidy's emails and distribute them to U.S. journalists. The stolen emails exposed how Broidy tried to parlay his access to President Donald Trump into lucrative contracts for his private security company with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Qatar's chief rivals. Qatar denies involvement in the hacking."

I think the press conflates certain things about Trump. Yes he is NOT an intellectual and is NOT intelligent beyond his ability to scam people and score cheap publicity by appealing to the lowest of his bases' wants and impulses.
I disagree though when they say "he doesn't understand that he's not a dictator/king". I think he understands that perfectly well but he just doesn't give a shit and will push as many boundaries and norms as he can until someone stops him.
and when tv hosts ask why he's making a certain decision...they sound dumb. He's not trying to do the right thing! He only cares about pleasing his master Putin and enriching/protecting himself and his family. I wish they'd stop wondering about his motives beyond those 2 points.

R387 speaking of how the GOP attracts sociopaths and authoritarians, read Greg Sargent's recent twitter posts about polling within the GOP surrounding the Government shutdown earlier this year.
Paraphrasing: Democrats fear negative headlines, because they know that most legitimate media caters to both sides of the aisle, and they don't want to risk alienating conservative-leaning voters.
Republicans do not fear negative headlines as it makes them believe that they're "tearing things down," which is appealing. In other words, the negative press confirms their bias.
I guarantee they're trying to pressure Schumer into thinking about how things will look worse for Dems if they drag this out.

They’ll tell him he’ll be a “Hero,” because he’ll open the government, tout his goody and Trump will only get part of his Wall.

President Donald Trump's sudden decision to yank U.S. forces out of Syria came after a private call with the hard-line president of Turkey where the president ditched a script crafted by his aides and was told allies fighting alongside the U.S. were terrorists.
The fateful call occurred Friday, according to multiple press accounts, just as Turkey's President Recep Erdogan publicly saber-rattling about a campaign to wipe out U.S.-allied Turkish forces in northeastern Syria.
The U.S. has relied on Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria to take out ISIS elements in a multi-year military campaign that Trump cheered on Twitter Friday.
Trump's national security aides prepared a script for the call, which the president abandoned during his chat. Rather than pushing Erdogan, a NATO ally, to hold off on military action, the Turkish leader seized control of the phone call and declared the U.S. Syria mission virtually completed, even as he went after the United States' kurdish allies.
He told Trump 'that the U.S. must stop aiding terrorists in the region and do this as soon as possible,' reported the pro-government Turkish paper Daily Sabah.
According to Turkey's communications directorate, Erdogan was threatening to move military 'at any moment.'
'We talked to Trump. These terrorists have to leave areas east of the Euphrates. If they do not leave, we will dispatch them. Because they are disturbing us,' he said.
On the call, Erdogan was able to seize control of the conversation by pointing to U.S. military success, saying the U.S. had already defeated 99 per cent of ISIS.
When he asked Trump 'Why are you still there?', it prompted Trump to pass on the query to his own security advisor, John Bolton, who was monitoring the call.
Sources on the call said Trump 'quickly capitulated' and yielded to Erdogan's withdrawal demand, the Associated Press reported.
Critical to the U.S.-led anti-ISIS campaign have been Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF, consisting of arabs and kurds in Syria. The U.S. also backs People's Protection Units, or YPG, which consists mostly of Kurds but who Turkey considers to close to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, as Military Times reported.

Dems actually care about workers, Republicans never really care about the American people.

Adding further intrigue to how the decision came about is the State Department's approval, announced Tuesday, of Turkey's decision to spend $3.5 billion purchasing U.S.-made Patriot missile defense systems.
It came amid U.S. concerns Turkey might go with the Russian-made S-400 system, which in turn could allow the Russians to spy on NATO activities.
Trump's decision to withdraw American troops from Syria was made hastily, without consulting his national security team or allies, and over strong objections from virtually everyone involved in the fight against the Islamic State group, according to U.S. and Turkish officials.
The Washington Post reported Thursday that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Joseph Dunford, wasn't present at a Tuesday White House meeting where the final decision ultimately got made.
'We've been thinking that as the walls close in around Trump, we would have a 'Wag the Dog' scenario where he starts to lash out,' Obama administration Pentagon official Derek Chollet told the New York Times. 'But it won't be getting us into wars — it will be the opposite.'
Adding to the intrigue, Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted that he has spoken to Trump Monday and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Tuesday and had been told of the U.S. plan – indicating that two foreign leaders may have been in the know before senior military and civilian officials did.
"In no uncertain terms, reporting throughout this story is not true,' National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis told DailyMail.com, responding to questions about the call and accounts that emerged in AP reporting and Turkish media sources.
'In no uncertain terms, reporting throughout this story is not true. It is clear from the context that this false version of events is from sources who lack authority on the subject, possibly from unnamed sources in Turkey,' he added.

you make a huge mistake if you think Trump is dumb. He isn't. He is not smart in the sense that he understands how government works and yes, he has serious personality disorders that inform his behavior, but he possesses a low cunning and was smart enough to be effective in his own world. But when he decided to overreach, and aim too high, to step out into the international political arena he fucked himself up. He has a dirty, corrupt, underhanded criminal mind, and he has to be confronted and cornered. He's also a coward so he will fold when he is finally cornered. But as long as he believes Putin has his back he'll continue to hang on. I really don't think t his is going to end well for him. By that I mean I don't think he'll negotiate an exit. He's fucked.

What r524 post says because eff Facebook: This morning I phoned my friend, the former Republican member of Congress.
ME: So, what are you hearing?
HE: Trump is in deep sh*t.
ME: Tell me more.
HE: When it looked like he was backing down on the wall, Rush and the crazies on Fox went ballistic. So he has to do the shutdown to keep the base happy. They’re his insurance policy. They stand between him and impeachment.
ME: Impeachment? No chance. Senate Republicans would never go along.
HE (laughing): Don’t be so sure. Corporate and Wall Street are up in arms. Trade war was bad enough. Now, you’ve got Mattis resigning in protest. Trump pulling out of Syria, giving Putin a huge win. This dumbass shutdown. The stock market in free-fall. The economy heading for recession.
ME: But the base loves him.
HE: Yeah, but the base doesn’t pay the bills.
ME: You mean …
HE: Follow the money, friend.
ME: The GOP’s backers have had enough?
HE: They wanted Pence all along.
ME: So …
HE: So they’ll wait until Mueller’s report, which will skewer Trump. Pelosi will wait, too. Then after the Mueller bombshell, she’ll get 20, 30, maybe even 40 Republicans to join in an impeachment resolution.
ME: And then?
HE: Senate Republicans hope that’ll be enough -- that Trump will pull a Nixon.
ME: So you think he’ll resign?
HE (laughing): No chance. He’s fu*king out of his mind. He’ll rile up his base into a fever. Rallies around the country. Tweet storms. Hannity. Oh, it’s gonna be ugly. He’ll convince himself he’ll survive.
ME: And then?
HE: That’s when Senate Republicans pull the trigger.
ME: Really? Two-thirds of the Senate?
HE: Do the math. 47 Dems will be on board, so you need 19 Republicans. I can name almost that many who are already there. Won’t be hard to find the votes.
ME: But it will take months. And the country will be put through a wringer.
HE: I know. That’s the worst part.
ME: I mean, we could have civil war.
HE: Hell, no. That’s what he wants, but no chance. His approvals will be in the cellar. America will be glad to get rid of him.
ME: I hope you're right.
HE: He’s a dangerous menace. He’ll be gone. And then he'll be indicted, and Pence will pardon him. But the state investigations may put him in the clinker. Good riddance.

I can imagine him getting convicted by the Senate, and then needing to be dragged from the Oval Office by the Secret Service, while his tiny fingers claw desperately at the Resolute desk.

I can think of a couple that are probably already there. Toomey, Tillis, Corbyn, Shelby, probably Lee. Add in Romney as well.
But I can't get anywhere near 19.

And Collins, obviously, depending on how her concerns are feeling that day.

R531 Burr is definite!! You know he will vote to convict. He already knows a lot.
But you know, McConnell is tied to big money people and they need to be clear with him if they really want this to happen. I'm not convinced. I doubt they always wanted Pence. But he'll do. I don't think they care about what's left of the base, but I do believe they care about their donors. Something is missing from the scenario as outlined.....

6) Collins
7) Shelby
8) Kennedy
9) Gaines
10) Corbyn

The problem with the Robert Reich thing is 1) There is no way there should ever be a President Pence. He was head of the transition and there's no way his hands are clean and it seems like things are pointing to him being implicated in it too. 2) If it gets as bad as Reich's "source" says, there's no way that Pence would be able to Pardon Dotard as it would only further make him look like an accessory when viewed with his involvement.
Also, I don't like Reich and I don't trust him. Not since the bullshit he pulled during the primaries.

I have been wondering if Rachel Maddow's Bag Man podcast, about the race to get Spiro Agnew out of office before Nixon resigned or got impeached and he would become untouchable, is her saying that the press knows something they're not yet able to report.

They were all in Russia on July 4 2018. I don't think any of these assholes will be voting to impeach.

It's not really a question of "allows" is it? If the House votes to impeach, isn't the Senate constitutionally obligated to hold a trial?
I wonder who the House would appoint as a prosecutor. Assuming it doesn't have to be a member, should we assume Mueller?

If the House votes to impeach they have to deliver the articles of Impeachment to the Senate. I think the Senate has to review them in committee. If the Committee agrees with the findings they will deliver them to the Floor for a vote, but I think it all goes through the Majority Leader. Not sure I guess I'll have to research the process, because we need to know what the procedure is.
by Anonymous | reply 576 | December 22, 2018 7:19 PM |
I thought once the Senate has their floor vote, then they gear up for a trial with the Chief Justice presiding. I'd love to see this go through the entire process. A televised trial with Trump forced to sit there and listen to all the charges, and the evidence and the vote to convict!!!!!!! I have a dream!!!! I'm going to go research the procedures.

by Anonymous | reply 580 | December 22, 2018 7:27 PM |
There's nothing I found in Constitution that says the there is any vote prior to the trial. The only specifics are that conviction requires a 2/3rds majority, and the Chief Justice must preside over the impeachment of a president.

by Anonymous | reply 582 | December 22, 2018 7:29 PM |
I don't think Roberts would be anything other than a fair jurist. Whatever I feel about some some of his decisions, I have always thought he has attempted to stick to his interpretations of the law only, and remain apolitical. He seems to want to make sure he has a legacy.
Although, yes, he clearly loathes Trump.
Looks like we're shut down until at least Thursday. Senate's recessed with no deal.
by Anonymous | reply 583 | December 22, 2018 7:32 PM |
R576 is R577 C'est moi!!!!!! I'm just not sure if once the House votes to Impeach, that the trial in the Senate is automatic. I had the impression it had to be reviewed in committee and the Senate had to agree on the findings presented in the articles. Then it goes to trial. But OTOH, maybe it is automatic. The thing is, if it is automatic, Trump will be in a world of shit. He will not be able to stop it, and he will try. He will try anything. That's why he will need an Alexander Haig type in the WH as chief of staff. No telling what Trump will try.

You are misremembering. He was even impeached during the lame duck session of the 105th Congress and it was taken up by the following one.
As a result, Chuck Schumer voted against the Articles of Impeachment in the House, and against to acquit as a freshman Senator.
