One more word about Charlene of Monaco - she has worn some extremely elegant clothes but doesn't always get it right. The Mirror this morning has been the only paper so far to headline its coverage of the Cenotaph ceremony with "Camillla and Kate Join Queen on Balcony - But Not Meghan". The rest have simply stated it below the headline.

Sparkle has had a really bad PR week and if she misses the messages here, she's a fool. It is undoubtedly the Yorks (and possibly the staff she quickly made enemies among) who leaked Tiara Gate and well and truly paid her back for the maternity coat stunt at Yuge's wedding. She thinks she's playing petty games with the Kardashians - she isn't. She's playing with immensely wealthy people whose entrenched social standing and influence is galaxies larger than hers.

If she has the sense of an ant, she'll lick those burnt fingers, stop mugging for the camera, start wearing British fashion, and settle into her second-string status, one that will become increasingly minor over the next couple of decades, and thank her lucky stars for getting this far.

Kaiser on Celebitchy is, of course, insisting that these stories "don't make sense" and that this is all about the British press always having had a bead on Meghan.

Kaiser is party right: what she has left out of that statement is that they have a bead on her because she threatened them and got Harry to threaten them before they were engaged, in order to entrench herself further as Harry's future wife. It isn't because she American or biracial or divorced or an actress: she did with the British press just what she did with the Yorks: overreach and assume she had a stronger hand than she really had.

It's rather like Henry James's old themes of the innocent Americans abroad who whilst rich have no clue the way things work in European social circles.

R17 - I think the Afro hair matter has been discussed here including the internalisation of conflict about it on women of colour. But in choosing to try to look as non-African as possible, Meghan has left herself open to criticism. She's not Rachel Zany any longer, her marriage has brought her exactly the global exposure she's always craved. But with that, it has also brought her intense global scrutiny. She has stated herself that she thinks African hair is beautiful but she "feels sexier with straight her" which in and of itself is a rather trashy statement.

She has the right to wear her hair any way she prefers. She doesn't have the right to object when it comes under criticism. God knows, Kate's "sausage curls" have been the object of jeers from the Celebitchy set for years. No one objected to Kate's hair being jeered at.

I think the real issue here is not so much Meghan's hair, as her general aura of lack of authenticity, of seizing a role she wanted badly, but without any understanding or respect for the institution she so nakedly aspired to join.

The fact is, she's phonier than, as Americans say, a $3 bill. And the hair has become symbolic of her phony facade.

But it also means she should find better ways of working with it - God knows she has the money to, now. The tendrils were getting incredibly silly - I notice she has started to wear them less. Those Brazilian blow-outs have to be done twice monthly and they are devastating to hair strength. She doesn't seem to have it trimmed up often enough to save the hair.

And come to it, both she and Kate are over 35 and should be thinking about shorter hair, anyway. I note that Kate has trimmed hers up and is now wearing it several inches shorter; she looks more adult and more sophisticated, rather than like a 36 year old trying to look like an 18 year old, which she sometimes struck me as.

It is actually rather sad. She had a lot of promise, and perhaps she still does. When she dressed herself, or wore her Suits era clothes, she looked attractive, American, and alive. Harry will always be more interesting than Wills, if he and Meghan really did some work raising awareness of need in the Commonwealth and working to make positive change where it is really needed (not luxury touring Oceania) they could be quite interesting and perhaps more glamorous than the Cambridges. I read on one of the anti-Meg Insta pages that she and Harry were sat down after the Australia tour and dressed down for their behavior. She alleged turned on the waterworks and tried to claim her bad work was because she was pregnant and Harry was over her fake tears. Then the tiara story leaked and she blamed "fucking Mel" for bering a spy (her assistant) and it got back to Melissa who had enough and told Harry she was quitting. Harry begged her to stay but on her way out the door Melissa told him that Meg was a "monster" who was ruining the monarchy and all of the history that comes with it.

The only reason they would have used a surrogate is if they knew Meghan had a fertility problem. I feel awful for Doria. She is in a shitty position thanks to her daughter and son in law. From much of what I've read, Christmas at Sandringham is something of a chore, even at the best of times. But if she doesn't go, then everyone sort of looks bad.
