Part 10: Dangling Tendrils, Ill-Fitting Gowns, Is It Time for a Style Intervention for New Royal Duchess Meghan?

A lot of Diana’s jewels were wedding gifts. I think it was some Saudi Prince who gifted her that giant pearl and sapphire choker that she wore with her ‘revenge dress’. Also being the wife of the heir to the throne, the Queen gifted her jewels also, which were probably given back to the crown after her death. It was a different time when fabulous jewels were expected, not frowned upon. I wish Kate would wow us once in a while with some great jewelry. We all know the Queen has an amazing inherited collection, it wouldn’t kill her to borrow a piece or two.

Looking at pictures of Pippas bridesmaid dress, I was struck at how beautiful the fabric was. The is a richness you can almost feel, which makes the dresses for Megan’s weddding look all the more cheap.

I think Meghan didn't think too hard about the royal family when she worked her way in. She certainly didn't think about rank. Nobody marrying the sixth in line should be entertaining Princess Diana fantasies, and nobody who is not bringing her own wealth into the relationship should be fantasizing about couture everything while married to the sixth in line (no duchy for him). Not to mention nobody lacking their own longstanding family or social network in the U.K. should be marrying into the royal family while fantasizing about becoming a star. It was quite awkward seeing Meghan and Harry join up in the churchyard at the Straubenzee wedding, seeing Harry greeted with hugs and air kisses while Meghan was clearly invisible to everyone. I think it's interesting that the aristos have no problem ghosting her when she's standing right there.

Someone posted that Jessica Mulroney fantasizes about one of her own kids marrying into the royal family eventually. Well, that ain't gonna happen because Meghan is an outsider in that family and won't be able to hook up any mini Mulroneys. Jessica Mulroney is clearly in this for the attention, but her turn as a bridesmaids mom was the peak so far, and her wannabe Pippa moment was hijacked by Charlotte waving on the steps above her. Also the cameras followed Kate, not Jessica, so the rear view was lost. But they are Meghan's linchpin. Her affiliation with the family of a former prime minister, and her intermittent socializing via that family with the current Canadian First Lady gave her cred in Harry's eyes. I don't think he saw the perfect storm that put her in position - it wasn't real status, real accomplishment, real social security. Meghan has no safety net. She was on a nothing show that filmed in Toronto. The Toronto locale shrunk her social competition and increased the status of having a job on basic cable, and even then she needed her chef boyfriend to open doors. I guess Harry has been around real aristocrats who kind of take their privilege casually that he never perceived Meghan hanging onto hers tooth and claw for fear of falling back into being a nobody.

Meg and Harry are appearing at a child wellness awareness awards on 9/4 for Heads Together (Will and Kate are patrons so imagine if all four show up). The on the 6th trey have some WWI Centenerry event. At any rate, Megs is going to show us some possibly horrible outfits to deal with youth mental heath and aging and mostly dead soldiers in a late tribute.

Meghan and Denmark's Princess Mary are going to have a fashion showdown in Australia at the Oct. Inviictus Games. . She's a native and wants to be there for it. Mary lived in Denmark for four yeas before marrying Crown Prince Frederik before their wedding as she worked normal jobs there and learned the language. She's beloved.

MM is an American older divorcee interloper with a bad taste in fashion and staring down 40 as a failing actress. Mary was a successfull real estate before doing four years of work to be accepted into the Danish Royal family and they have four kids. Megs is a c-list aging actress with no future ahead and glommed on to dimwit Harry. Can't wait for Mary to outshine MeAgain at the Invictus Games.

I simply fail to understand the attraction to black, as it's not as if it flatters her colouring as no other colour can do. It's a cheap route to dressing up, in my opinion, and by cheap I don't mean inexpensive, but easy - very much the way an office worker heading to the theatre after work dresses, which is how the tuxedo dress struck me.

I once saw footage of Roy Rogers, who spent ten months out of the year doing tireless charity work for children, visiting a children's ward in an urban area. The kids were all sitting up in bed expectantly, you could see how excited they were. Suddenly, the ward doors opened, and he came in ON TRIGGER, who reared up as they came in. The kids were not expecting the horse, and the screams of joy that erupted from the beds was just moving beyond belief. Whatever you think of his religious views, at last Rogers' money was where his mouth was - I've never forgotten the scene and what it meant to those kids that he came in full cowboy gear WITH the bloody horse.

That's how you visit sick kids who are told a fucking royal Duchess is coming to celebrate with them, not in a desk to dinner outfit that looks like you went hastily through your closet and said, OK, I'll throw on a shiny cami and add high heels and this'll do.

R91 - Wow, I can't believe you found that image of Rogers at the hospital. Thank you! I read that Roy and Dale Rogers were the first people to keep a mentally handicapped child and treat her as one of the family, instead of putting her away in an institution and forgetting she'd ever been born, and Dale wrote a book about her called "Angel Unaware". The child died at three or so, but the Rogers' refusal to hide her away, instead treating her as they would any other child in the family, helped spearhead a change in people's attitudes to such children.

Maybe someone should forward some photos to Harry and Meghan so they can see how Diana and Roy Rogers dressed to meet sick kids.

In the DM article it showed all of the other celebrity guests at the step and repeat photo wall (all UK stars) and EVERYONE was in a bright cheery color. Lots of pinks on the ladies. Nothing super formal, just colorful light cocktail dresses or sheaths that were right for the occasion. What Megan wore was what she should have worn to the Hamilton performance, a theater evening event. . A black, funereal evening menswear pantsuit it not what you wear around sick and dying kids at an event celebrating them. She just doesn't get it AT ALL when it comes to what to wear for occasions.

Princess Mary in a pale blue floral patterned dress and matching sweater - comforting, calming and tranquil colours to meet children.

My aunt was mentally disabled and institutionalized (it was the 50s). Roy Rogers and Dale Evans visited her 'home' when she was probably 12 or 13. She remembered that day for the rest of her life. My grandparents said they were truly kind people who wanted to make sure the kids had a great time.

What some people refuse to believe but you can see from space is that the difference between Princess Mary and Meghan Markle is Princess Mary has a budget for her clothing, and a tailor, and Markle DOES NOT. Maybe Megs was just being thoughtful and prepping the dying kids and their parents for the children's inevitable funerals. Happiness and bright colors be damned, she's all about reality!

In all seriousness, she seemed really uncomfortable with the kids. Fake smiles for the photos, etc. Harry on the other hand was in so many other photos acting natural with the kids goofing off, playing with them and being natural. MeAgain was only shown in photos with Harry while he was doing it. Kate on her own has always seemed comfortable and at home attending events with children without William. She engages with them so naturally and the kids are drawn to her.

Meghan in her few outings with Harry around kids has seemed uncomfortable around rug rats unless he's there to help her. Will never forget during their engagement tour when they visited with some kids and Harry had one side of the table with the children totally engaged with him while Meghan tried to interact with kids on the other side of the table and they wanted nothing to do with her. She handed them a toy firetruck and rather than get into a cute situation with it, the kids turned away from her and played with it among themselves. Kids and animals are the best judges of people. Meghan got pissy after the kids didn't shower her with attention and put her elbows on the table looking frustrated and kept looking at Harry wondering when it was going to all be over. She's not a natural with children. Narcissists never are. It's all about themselves.

I know I would not be at ease with ill children, so I don't blame her. You can love children and not knowing what to do with sick children.

Harry is a natural with children, certainly because he's 5 years old in his head. So it's one of his real quality.

Her all black outfit was super dull. But it was not a mistake in her head. Meghan and Jessica have this strategy about always being different. Be the girl in sophisticated black among colors and you will shine.

Well, the hybrid Brit-Yank weighing in here: Americans and Brits are both friendly, the difference is that Brits are far more reticent about telling nearly complete strangers their life story, including how they sorted it all during their years in analysis. Brits are perfectly nice - although I will say Londonders used to be much more mellow than they are now, I think it's down to the simple extraordinary congestion in the center of the capital, but as a rule they don't spill their guts to people they don't know well. The humour in Britain is quite different, though.

But on a day to day basis, both populations are friendly - and helpful to strangers. I love New Yorkers and lived there for years, and also have friends in Boston and environs. Frankly, in my stint teaching in New Mexico, I found the local population, outside of centers like Santa Fe, more like Brits than east coast Americans: sociable but emotionally reticent.

I have had far less experience with the West Coast and the South in America.

I don't think MM is uncomfortable around children or hates them or any such thing - but she seems to have functioned pretty much as an only child (those of us who had younger siblings come along have a different experience). MM looks like she is really out of her element. She probably thought that this would be easy. It isn't. Diana had a natural caring way much like Harry. MM smiles a lot, but she isn't really that warm of a human being.

MM looked nice. Her clothes always look borrowed. She just doesn't have an "off the rack" body. Nothing wrong with that as most women don't. Kate's height and body size/type are probably the "fit model" standard. This is why Kate often looks so much better put together.

I've had a look on yougov the only thing recent I can find is positive ratings. Which members can vote on at any time. Her positivity score in April was +36, and in August was +15. I don't think an actual poll has been done since before the wedding. She's managed to double her don't like's and really don't likes. Seems the more the yougov members see of her the less they like.

I suspect this happened with a somewhat desperate Harry. As I've opined before, he found himself over 30, at a crossroads, many friends and his brother marrying and founding families, and Harry felt that he either gave up the ghost of pursuing any other kind of life, which would have meant resigning his place in the line of succession, or found a wife to make it bearable. The former option presented some economic diminishment (although not as much as people think, as I'm sure his father would have awarded him a handsome settlement beyond the income from Diana's trust, and also provided for him in his will, and perhaps even gifted him with a fine home). That option also presented some social diminishment - whilst still an HRH, giving up his place in the line of succession would have dulled some of that tinsely glitter from Harry's standing.

Harry probably just didn't have the guts to for a life of more freedom, and I suspect he hates the work of an active senior royal, so he set out to find the woman who would make it more bearable. Meghan Markle was the right woman in the right place at the right time, and was skilled enough to make the most of her opportunity.

Not an unfamiliar story, really, except for the social status and public lifestyle of the parties involved.

Poster went on to say that it probably wasn't Meghan's fault, how would she know, but someone on staff SHOULD have known and told her. The poster says that this is why pediatricians so often wear blue Oxford shirts, and nurses and peds wear bright colored scrub tops with clown faces on them . . . it was quite interesting (comment #51 if anyone is interested).

In short, Meghan couldn't have selected a worse outfit for this event if she'd been trying. It would be interesting to know if after the fact, some of the charity workers sent a polite note telling her why she shouldn't have and not to do it again.

The Wu dress is a beautiful colour which does look good on her, and as is so often the case with MM, the dress in and of itself is pretty. But it looks terrible from the side - she looks either fat or pregnant from the side, and if she is pregnant, that's not what is making her boobs look twice as big, because that doesn't set in until around the sixth month, and there's no way she's six months along. So it's the pleats - yet again, the design is completely wrong for her figure. The length is nice, the shoes nice, but she looks FAT.

I've been on SSRI's for over 20 years, not more than 20 mg a day, but still, prozac, then paxil, then lexapro, and now viibryd. Never all of these prescriptions at once, just 20 mg a day of whatever my prescription is. I know this is not uncommon. I've never noticed my pupils or the pupils of others who are on stronger prescriptions (more mgs) being dilated.

The dress already had some “interest” and didn’t look as formal as the shoes. What is it, DL makeup, hair and plastic surgery experts, that makes her look so bad now when she was so fresh looking just months ago?

Skin eruptions from stress

bronzer

not doing whatever she used to do w/ her hair (Brazilian blowouts, weaves, whatever)

Cheek fillers

Moving back toward unflattering arched eyebrows

Meghan might not have any judgment of her own. Right now she's traipsing around looking like Jessica Mulroney's mini me, and Jessica Mulroney's idea of "being Kate" (at times, such as when HM is present) and JM's idea of being a duchess, which is a trash TV version of all of it. When she was on Suits (pre-Mulroney's influence), she parroted back everything the hair and wardrobe team told her. Mulroney has destroyed her face with injections of all kinds. When I looked up Meghan Markle (I only heard of her after Harry's statement) I thought she was cute, and more than cute on Suits. When I saw how she looked at her engagement, I thought, well, she's an actress, so it wasn't quite polished, but I figured it would get there instead of get worse. FF a bunch of months and she looks like that freaking "Madame" puppet - the old lady puppet with all the plastic surgery. And there's a porn star aesthetic with the make-up - the pneumatic nude lips, the heavy contour, the bulging cheekbones. She has nice bone structure so I don't know if she's injected her cheeks, but sometimes they project weirdly, that, with the lips, makes it look like she's done a lot of stuff.

The blue dress was again the wrong size and too much fabric swamping her frame. The black suit was ok but the shiny, slinky fabrics were wrong for the occasion. Harry sure knows how to pick em!

She may be more verbal but I am starting to thing she's about as dim as Harry. Hasn't got an observant, analytical or strategic cell in her brain. She may be able to swim in the shallow pool of the SoNoHopers House set.

Watching video of her at events like those weddings, I am wondering what she has to talk about to those people? Does she have any frame of reference to them? Do they have any frame of reference to her? And given that she leaks stories, who would trust her?

That early leaked story about Kate supposedly not offering her a ride sounded petty and nasty. Even if the events (or some form of the events) happened, did Sparkle think she was the first of Harry's girlfriends and that Kate would automatically get cozy with them? But by leaking that story, Sparkle damaged her own reputation among people who she later might be introduced to. Such a very boneheaded move.

I suspect she really had no idea of what being in the RF, even with Harry only 6th in line, really meant.

Given the bizarre family structure and dynamics of the Royal Family, it must have been something of a shock for William to encounter and get to know Kate's family. I think this is the kind of family structure he wanted not just for himself, but for his children as well.

I remember reading a story about Liza Minnelli once. She had gotten to know a woman (not an actress, perhaps someone who was in the business, but not in front of the audience.) At one point, while Liza was with her, the woman was calling home to talk to her mother for some reason. Liza asked if she could listen in. It wasn't anything secret about the call, so the woman agreed. Liza told her that she wanted to hear how a normal mother and daughter talked to each other.

I always thought that spoke volumes about how Liza had grown up.

I would not be surprised if there was something of that in the initial reaction of William meeting Kate's family.

Years ago, someone told me that when an apparently top level catch marries out of his "class" or peer group, that means that he has been rejected by the women in his peer group, and, that there is something wrong with the guy. I've seen it in real life (good looking Wharton grad is rejected by US appropriate counterparts cuz he's nuts and marries Brazilian girl). That's what may be happening here. Similarly, every child in an unhappy family copes with his situation in his own way. Some are more resilient, some less so, and birth order and other circumstances beyond their control shape children's response to unhappy environments.

Most kids in unhappy families and witnessing devastating adversarial parental relationships, exhibit one of two psychological responses: the determination to do the opposite, and the craving to recreate the family environment but this time do it "right" so that they get what they always wanted out of that same family environment.

I suspect William's response was the former, and in this he was helped because the pressures of his future position forced him to consider spouses more rationally.

Harry, ironically, with more latitude to choose, followed the latter impulse: looking for a narcissistic, emotionally demanding "star" who longed for a larger stage to play on - a stage that only he could give her along with the "family she never had". As his father fulfilled Diana's deepest wishes, Harry fulfilled Meghan's: to be a global A-Lister and show 'em all, once and for all.

Usually, relationships set up along these lines crash and burn; remains to be seen if Harry's and Meghan's follow suit.

I would place serious money without question against the Hazbeans lasting the long haul. There have been sooooooooo many red flags from the beginning, and the flags just become more bizarre and exponential as time goes on. R470 - Yes, the autumnal green suit with leather gloves to a royal christening in a heat wave in early July was a fairly strange statement; so was the Black Widow Afternoon Assignation dress and hat at the RA F's 100th celebration. She's either malicious or obtuse or both. But perhaps she's also acting out for Harry - he may have picked her for just that reason: she can put two fingers up to the BRF in a way he doesn't dare.

It isn't uncommon for one partner to hide behind the other, who takes all the flak for acting out the other's unspoken hostility.

The question is, why in God's name did the BRF allow it? Did she really fool them that expertly? MM is like a toddler, and will take any attention, positive or negative. She wants all eyes to be on her (thus small talk skills are unneeded in her mind) and everyone to talk about her. Good points, R479. I do not think Harry fully realizes how different his life will be with a woman who does not fit in his social group (and seemingly does not care to try to do so). That couple is lovely and likely were quite the scandal when she was 21 and he was 16, lol. They are up there with the friends of Harry and William who rode off on the bicycle rickshaw in seeming young and joyful.

I did not watch the MM wedding, but read that during the ceremony, there was a bit about faithfulness and people in the church actually laughed out loud. To those who watched, did that happen? If so, pretty shocking and sad.

MM has seemingly burned many bridges. She has few family relationships and few friends. She treated her first 2 husbands poorly, that and being on a 3rd marriage in her 30s are not good signs.

I have three kids with hundreds and hundreds of children’s books (we are very fortunate), and can speak with some authority on what my kids and their friends like.
