There is a Treason... Turn, Turn, Turn (The Mueller Investigation Part 48)

Continued Discussion...

Who's flipping next?

A time to plant, a time to reap

A time to build up, a time to break down

A time to gain, a time to lose

A time to rend, a time to sew

A time for love, a time for hate

A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

I wish Disney, in buying Fox, had included Fox News. They could make it centrist. A replacement would arise probably (NRA TV or RT), but it'd take time. Maybe some people would wake up.

Alas, Disney won't be acquiring Fox News with its purchase of Fox.
As part of the Disney-Fox merger, 21st Century Fox will spin off Fox News, Fox Business, and the Fox broadcasting network into a new, separately traded company.

from the last thread:
Because, [R596], people are giving WAY too much power to their fear of “how many there are.” And at the end of the day, justice is not decided by “how many there are.” Either Justice will prevail — or not. But the percentage of these fucking jamokes has no correlation to Justice actually prevailing, and the fear of the assholes is actually making people feel hopeless and helpless because they are too focused on “how many there are.” See my post at [R306] for clarity.

But doesn't their prevalence matter for juries? They can pretend to be neutral more or less, and get on juries and ruin things.

by Anonymousreply 14August 25, 2018 3:24 AM

I think this post from Your Cunty Mother is worth reposting:

All you Mary’s need to STOP with the “they will turn on him when __________.” It’s not going to happen. Get it? They. Will. Not. Turn. On. Him.

We. Don’t. Need. Them. To.

Just keep screaming that he’s the most traitoring traitor who ever traitored. The rest will happen organically. Trust. What we need to keep saying is, “oh HELL no, not having some Russher guy taxing fucking money I don’t have for another fucking week, much less a fucking DAY! Fuck his lies. And fuck you for defending LIES.” Triple down on the lies, triple down on attacking his character, triple down on each law being broken, yet refuse to compare him to ANYBODY (that’s a trap and you’ll lose), but NOT because you’re trying to sell them on changing their minds — you’re just letting them know we’re going to kick anyone’s ass who supports this bullshit. REFUSE to listen to someone say “but they all do it [lying]” without flipping fucking tables over — do NOT accept that without going Donkey Kong!!! We need to stop trying to win them over, they’re 100 times worse than Nixon’s supporters, but in the end, that doesn’t even matter. Whatever percentage of them exist after this ends will simply be an amusing observation — their base wields zero power at this point in history. Do not fear them. Justice will prevail, you just need to vocalize your faith in truth and justice, everything else will happen all by itself, as I said, organically. Including his downfall.

And as others said, do not goad them either. I say this as someone who was hysterically laughing yesterday. Keep your glee to yourself and like-minded friends, share your glee only in places like the DL. Not because you don’t deserve to relish our victory, but only because it isn’t productive to rub the puppy’s nose in his/her mess. In other words, use your brain, the next few months matter in setting a productive, inspired, and even humbled tone to move our country forward fast, and good leaders will help expedite that process.

Now is NOT the time however, to stop calling your Reps BTW!!!! Or going to protests!!!! Or telling doctor offices and gyms you don’t want that Fox propaganda shit on the tv or you’re taking your business elsewhere, and you’ll tell others to take their business elsewhere too!!!!

The next few months require a delicate blend of three parts anger/patriotism and one part humility. The smart ones will be grateful for our humility. The dumb ones will mistake our humility for weakness, and that’s when you have my permission to bloody their noses.

by Anonymousreply 15August 25, 2018 3:25 AM

Why would you assume that Disney would make Fox news more centrist?

by Anonymousreply 16August 25, 2018 3:29 AM

R14, haven’t you ever been in a real brawl? Kicked someone’s ass or helped someone else getting their ass kicked? In the middle of a brawl do you say, “Ooooooo, his muscles look bigger, maybe he was on the wrestling team, and I don’t even know how to hit!” Or do you just FIGHT? Does this make any sense? Trust me, there aren’t enough of them that we should waste our valuable energy worrying about jury pools. AND that’s not something you can control anyway. Is it?

by Anonymousreply 25August 25, 2018 4:12 AM

Harvey Levin was absent from that filthy show for a few weeks. I wonder if he’s been hauled in yet.

He does the same thing as Pecker, no?

by Anonymousreply 26August 25, 2018 4:20 AM

Can’t wait to see that Active Measures docu which apparently lays out very convincingly how Trump was “turned” by the Russkies in 2013.

by Anonymousreply 27August 25, 2018 4:20 AM

We've known for a while that Pecker was involved in the illegal porn star payoff story. Just buying up stories and keeping them to yourself isn't illegal in itself.

by Anonymousreply 28August 25, 2018 4:40 AM

WRONG r28 because that isn’t “all” Pecker was up to. That prick knew 100% that this was tied to campaign funds, election tampering, and campaign finance law. A for effort toots!

by Anonymousreply 29August 25, 2018 4:52 AM

R29, How am I wrong? or WRONG? I was referencing the question about Harvey Levin above. We KNOW Pecker was up to illegal shit for political gain, and we've known (or at least strongly suspected) it for a while now, but there haven't been any rumors that the same is true for Levin. Levin probably does have juicy stories that he bought up and is sitting on, but, as long as you're not covering up a crime or something like that, it's not illegal.

So, when this is all over … how will the United States punish Russia?

by Anonymousreply 32August 25, 2018 5:28 AM

R32, even more severe sanctions, some specific to individuals. Disclosure of horrible information about them. Bolstering allies in Europe against interference and possible invasion. Free trade deal with Ukraine. Exclusion of Russia from international meetings and groups. Working with other democracies to fight online interference etc. Arms sales to their enemies. Removal of Assad, their puppet.

by Anonymousreply 33August 25, 2018 5:43 AM

Russia is a big mouse fart when it comes to its 11th place world economy.

r32, because the Republicans are so retro-Reagan we could outspend them, sanction them and then economically pound them into a recession. We could actually up the game on cyber warfare and isolate them on the internet. This is the fuckery that Putin fears. This is the retaliation that would have Russians dragging his dead body through the streets.

We were kind when the Berlin Wall came down and expected Russia to join the world economy. Instead it turned out to a nasty fuck piece of work after Yeltsin. Medvedev needs to be assassinated as well. Russia needs a a RULE OF LAW revolution that moves Russians from 12th century serfs to a 21 Century democratic nation. Putin and the Oligarchs fear the democratic rise of a true Russian middle class.

by Anonymousreply 34August 25, 2018 5:49 AM

Interesting, r33. For the group, how likely do we think these things will be and how long will it take to kick in?

There is no more benighted a country than Russia. At every turn they've made the wrong choices, and their culture and daily life is based on predation and venality. Fair play is completely foreign to them - an irrationality practiced by naive foreign peoples. TheY are so predatory that they cannibalize themselves if they cannot direct their violence and greed outward to other countries.

Truly, read about their history and culture. Read lots of sources. It's terrifying. They're terrifying. A cancer that either eats itself or the rest of the world.

And we think we're horrible. Our venality, selfishness, dishonesty, and violence is nothing compared to what they're capable of doing, and routinely do.

Romney was right on this one.

by Anonymousreply 41August 25, 2018 6:24 AM

It really disturbs me still that so many of the talking heads on cable news and other outlets are still giving the Repugs the benefit of the doubt: that the reason they don't act against Trump is they're afraid they'll lose their next election. Uh..... I don't think enough people have thought about the very real possibility that the reason they're not doing anything is because they took the same dirty money. If Mueller has the evidence to take him down, then he has the evidence to take them down too. That's the reason Nunes and the rest of them are trying to shut him down!

by Anonymousreply 44August 25, 2018 7:42 AM
So, when this is all over … how will the United States punish Russia?

Cut off their access to the Western World's internet. Sanctions against oligarchs and how much money they can spend outside Russia (so, bye-bye multi million dollar properties in NY, London, etc.).

If the illegitimate President had an illegitimate child with the housekeeper, could that be the reason why he hates Mexicans so much? Because he has to pay child support for little Alejandro?

Since Trump is rather simple, I don’t think this is too far fetched.

by Anonymousreply 51August 25, 2018 11:35 AM

None of the women Trump has been with were a 10 and that’s with extensive plastic surgery. Most of the women who have come forward claiming that Trump harassed them, weren’t a 10 either.

I hate having to use Trump’s rating system for women in my post, especially when the guy in question is a solid 0.5 in terms of looks and behavior and somehow believes that he deserves a good looking woman beside him.

Yes R42.

There are three groups of Republicans. Those the Russians funneled money to who actively encouraged it at the time (Nunes, Jordan, Chaffetz, etc.). Those the Russians financed who belatedly realized how tainted the money they got was (many NRA evangelicals). And those who largely missed the Russian funding boat (lots of Senators in this group - the Russians are strategic and relatively cheap).

The first group is desperate to kill off Mueller's inquiry because they fear going to jail. The second hope the first will “make it all go away” so that they won’t be embarrassed (and have to give back their thousands). The third group is actually willing to uphold their oaths of office and “do the right thing” but many are less than fully motivated, because doing it [italic] might [/italic] reconsign them to minority party status come election time.

by Anonymousreply 58August 25, 2018 2:38 PM

R28, I was very saucy last night, I totally apologize to you, especially for the totally tacky caps, I was trying to be funny but it sucked.

What I was trying to say is that Pecker’s activity wasn’t limited to just paying off porn stars, that his payment/interference was illegal when put in the context that he knew damn well he was interfering with the election and using funds not meant for porn stars. So he wasn’t simply paying off porn stars — he was directly involved in breaking multiple laws, which he understood perfectly at the time.

I read your post as implying that paying off porn stars isn’t against the law, and I was trying to say, “Well, actually, that depends....”

I love Maya Wiley’s frequent appearances on msnbc shows (most often The Beat with Ari Melber). She distilled complex legal arguments into manageable bites for this audience. And expresses intelligence and empathy every time she shows up on camera.

Sarah Kendzior is also a favorite contributor of mine. Someone linked to her podcast called Gaslit Nation a couple threads ago that I have listened to and learned a lot from. Kendzior has been ringing the “we’re descending I to totalitarianism” bell for quite some time now. She makes a great partner in appearances with Malcom Nance.

I saw Betsy Woodruff on the Metro the other day on my way to work and I almost fangurled her. But I just smiled when she got off at Gallery Place Chinatown. She is a tall woman.

The Graham comments are out of left field... last time Trumpy went after Mr. Magoo Graham was warning the Trumptard. I wish a reporter at the WaPo or NYT would get the gossip on what Miss Linda is up to.

I also wish/hope some day a reporter will do a story on the employment prospects for Kellyanne and Sarah BucketKFC Sanders. I'd love to see them schooled on life after this disgrace. (Recognize Kellyanne works for herself but would love Sanders to know how limited her prospects are.)

This and the rest of R41's knowledgeable post is precisely why Trump would have been so instantly attracted to doing business there. Shiny dubious new super-wealth backed up by authoritarian thuggishness - what on earth was not to like? Gangster nirvana.

Naturally Trump's stupid venal ego led him into being the easiest of marks, and set up to be the biggest ever useful idiot in history. Ironic that he called less nouveau-super-rich and murderous countries 'shitholes', when in fact he'd got into a (urine-stained) bed with the biggest shithole country of all.

No matter how much his debased base protests, Trump will not be able to survive once everything Pecker, Cohen and Weiselberg know about his filthy criminal activities comes to light. I have to believe that this is truly the beginning of the end for his disastrous presidency. if Russia interferes and the Democrats don't retake the House at least, then are we doomed?

It will take decades to undo all the damage Trump has caused. Can't help but be sad and just a little unsure. God I just want that SOB gone. He looks terrible, can't he just die already. I do believe that if everything Pecker and AW and Cohen knows about Trump starts to be revealed, Trump would rather resign than fight just to save a bit of face.

BTW, Pelosi has been effective but her blindly ego driven insistence on maintaining her leadership is not unlike other politicians. With gratitude, Pelosi needs to step aside. She's had her years in the sun.

by Anonymousreply 82August 25, 2018 5:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 83August 25, 2018 5:32 PM

Nothing is guaranteed in November with such powerful, evil forces going for a kind of last gasp death march for their own survival.

Only people who have been goaded and brainwashed to oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 87August 25, 2018 5:58 PM

r58, Only in the short term.

by Anonymousreply 89August 25, 2018 6:29 PM

R55, thanks. This stood out:
If there is a shocking upset GOP victory in November, then all bets are off: America is in worse trouble than we already think and possibly in an existential fight for survival.
But the more plausible scenario is that Trump, even if he has to be pushed kicking-and-screaming by Ivanka and the possible jailbirds Donald Jr. and Jared, gets out of Dodge. As with Nixon, his administration is most likely not to end with impeachment but with a self-pitying and self-justifying resignation in which Trump lashes out against both Republicans and Democrats, declares another ersatz “win,” and flees.

God how I fear the first scenario. The second does, however, seem more likely at the moment. I think.

If Fox News and Fox networks are spun off as a separate publicly traded company after Disney acquires the rest of 21st Century Fox, it means we can target institutional investors that invest in the new company. That could be big.

by Anonymousreply 92August 25, 2018 6:57 PM

R91 That article is from August 7th. In just the past week a whole lot has changed. I don't think this scenario is all that likely and I doubt anyone but his most irrational base would even buy it. At least, I hope not. I believe that with Manaforts trial coming up, Cohen ready to squeal, Pecker ready to open his safe and Weiselberg or whatever his name is and all that the SDNY is investigating re: Trump foundation and don't forget about the Emoluments suits in Maryland and a certain underage girl who was poised to sue Trump over allegations of sex with a minor or whatever that was dropped by the plaintiff during the election, there is so much there. Trumps fat ass is cooked.

by Anonymousreply 93August 25, 2018 6:57 PM

He's said as much already r91 (without admitting collusion - he will never do that). I don't see how some new lie makes that big of a difference.

by Anonymousreply 96August 25, 2018 7:00 PM

Schmidt is involved, so you have to take it with a grain of salt, but AP reported the same thing: Weisselberg only got immunity for his testimony against Coheh, not blanket immunity.

R97 is talking about Steve Schmidt of the garbage site RealClearPolitics. I had to Google what R97 was talking about.

by Anonymousreply 98August 25, 2018 7:10 PM

If Cohen plead guilty, why would they need Weisselberg at all?

by Anonymousreply 99August 25, 2018 7:10 PM

I mean, Weisselberg to make a case against Cohen.

by Anonymousreply 100August 25, 2018 7:10 PM

R67 neither. Lindsey is a pussy hound. At the golf outings with DJT, he received names and phone #s of the top hos in the porn, beauty contests, and modeling industries. Lindsey is quite grateful for the tips and contacts from the best.

r98 The linked article shows it's Michael Schmidt, the guy who writes exclusives as if he's gotten info from Mueller's team when it's actually just bullshit from Rudy. But the AP reported the same thing he's reporting. Many of us were hoping the immunity was for everything, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Yet.

Can anyone explain to me why Trump can set a "red line" for Robert Mueller's investigation? I don't recall this happening with Nixon or with Clinton and the special investigator. This is the question posed to Trump by Michael Schmidt and his sidekick, Maggot Haberman when Mueller first took on the investigation. Is it even legal for that dumbass to call looking at his finances a "red line". Haberman and Schmidt asked the question and seemed to take it seriously that trumps red line was his finances and I have heard this repeated by dumbass reporters on all of the news networks. A red line set by the target of an investigation is meaningless, no?

by Anonymousreply 106August 25, 2018 7:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 109August 25, 2018 8:10 PM

He couldn't even have tried to fire Ken Starr. The law Starr operated under, which required an actual impeachment by Congress, sunsetted in 1999.

It was specifically done to prevent another Saturday Night Massacre. But once it had done its job against Clinton, the GOP didn't want it any more.

If we survive this, and if there are a Democratic President and Congress in 2021, we need to pass a new version RFN.

Dotard supporters really are dumber than I could ever imagine. I just saw a Meme that a bunch of them are passing around about how dumb liberals are. It basically says something to the effect that Dumb Liberals are too stupid to realize that if they impeach Dotard, Pence becomes President, pardons Dotard, makes Dotard his VP, resigns, Dotard becomes President again and makes Pence his VP. Dumb Liberals minds are now blown.

by Anonymousreply 119August 25, 2018 9:23 PM

r119, firstly, If Pence becomes President the Speaker of the House becomes VP. There is no appointing. Trump supporters heads explode.

Which is why it is important that NOTHING happens to Trump before Pence is removed AFTER 01.03.2019.

Trumpublicans heads explode.

by Anonymousreply 120August 25, 2018 9:27 PM

Actually, under the 25th Amendment, if the President is removed from office, the Vice President becomes President and can appoint the new Vice President--but the proposed new VP needs to be confirmed by both Houses.

by Anonymousreply 121August 25, 2018 9:31 PM

They'll need to take down Trump and Pence both, which is seeming more likely all the time.

by Anonymousreply 122August 25, 2018 9:38 PM

^ Yes. He can't set any line officially. There are things he can do - like fire the AG to fire Rosenstein to end Mueller - but that carries the risk its one too many even for Republicans.

But to be honest, I am not sure of that any more. The Republicans have just abdicated all decency. The only way for them to survive even on the margins is to suck up to Trump's base. Trump destroyed that party, but didn't kill it.

by Anonymousreply 123August 25, 2018 9:46 PM

No, R120. That's not how it works. And it isn't how it works in my post at R119.

Pence would get to select a VP however that person would have to be confirmed. That's obviously not going to happen in that scenario. Those fucking Deplorables are just too fucking stupid to understand how it works and yet they're calling other people stupid. It's classic.

by Anonymousreply 124August 25, 2018 9:56 PM

ok r120, you've got me intrigued, why will Pence be removed after 01.03.2019?

by Anonymousreply 125August 25, 2018 10:01 PM

If the House changes to Democratic control the new Congress is seated on 01.03.2019.

Nancy Pelosi knows exactly the power of subpoena power and will not move to impeach Trump until Pence is removed. The VP CAN be indicted for civil and criminal activities while in office. Once Pence is removed, he will be replaced by a Trump nominee, good luck at having THAT happen. It will be interesting.

In order to fuck up the Republicans in the 2020 election, Trump will have to be removed closer to the end of 2019.

Patience.

by Anonymousreply 126August 25, 2018 10:10 PM

R125 I think that person is just using 1.3.19 as the date that Dems would hopefully control both the Senate and House.

by Anonymousreply 127August 25, 2018 10:11 PM

It is a pity the McCain is on his deathbed as he would be one of the few people Dems would support and it would scare the shit out of Trumpie knowing he would not receive a pardon.

There's a good reason he hasn't had it done, R130. You may remember this story: back in the late '80s, Ivana, his first wife, had a ton of plastic surgery. She recommended her surgeon to Trump, who got lipo and a scalp reduction procedure from him. Trump could not handle the pain following the operations; he became enraged at Ivana and attacked her. He pulled out clumps of her hair and raped her. (Later on, presumably to resolve financial issues, she said she wasn't quite raped, just "violated.").

No one wants to go through that again with him. I'm sure everyone just tells him he looks fabulous.

Something really sinister has been going on in West Virginia. I’ll get some links together but it ain’t pretty.

by Anonymousreply 139August 26, 2018 12:01 AM

The federal SDNY prosecutors flipped Allen Weisselberg solely on the hush-money payments. They used Weisselberg's immunity to convince Michael Cohen to plead guilty.

The New York state attorney general is investigating the Trump Foundation. Weisselberg was treasurer of the foundation. Evidence from the investigation could lead to state criminal charges against Trump and his children. Since Weisselberg is criminally exposed as the former treasurer, he could be flipped and forced to testify against the Trump family. Trump has no control over state legal actions. He cannot stop the investigation, prevent indictments and convictions, or pardon his family and himself. Buy industrial quantities for popcorn from Costco. This is going to be very entertaining.

So, R140: the limited scope of immunity granted to Weisselberg was clever. It gave prosecutors leverage over Cohen, who has now stated under oath that Trump committed illegal acts, and it leaves Weisselberg open to additional pressure from State and federal prosecutors.

We’re in a brief lull so I’m just throwing this in from the Trump had a bastard with his Columbia’s Housekeeper thread (or whatever it’s called):

you’re getting hotter!!!! He did INDEED say that, and if memory serves, he even said he liked to tape himself talking to the husbands of women he fucked and he would poke at them on tape, “your wife looks like she’d be an animal in bed. You think she’s an animal in bed? Your wife like to fuck a lot, John?” Of a man whose wife he had fucked. He would TAPE that. I read that in the David Cay Johnston book, correct author and title escape me. Author is chubby with a beard, has won Pulitzer’s and did a great bio on Trump, he’s researched him for 20 years and he’s the first one to receive DJT’s “tax return” — which he believes was sent directly by Donnie last year because it was from a tax year where you couldn’t spot some of the tax law loopholes he’s used. The author is an expert in tax law which is part of why he’s studied Trump for so long, he’s fascinated by his shenanigans.

The doorman is young but the story was still circulating while he was employed at Trump Tower, which also smells to me of truth. If it was made up decades ago, how is that story still in circulation? Most likely answer is that there are real players, and that keeps this gossip going...

Now here’s my juicy gossip to add that no one has mentioned (the Broidy thing is FOR SURE a John Edwards style cover-up for a Trump abortion). Here it is......he no longer even owns TRUMP TOWER!!! That’s right, his name is in big fat fucking brass ugly letters, but Russher actually “owns” that building because of King Midas’ knack for debt. Just remember, you read that right here on the DL first!!! And I DO think his loser cult will care — it REEKS of being a loser, it’s pretty hard to spin being a successful business man whose signature piece of real estate is mother fucking owned by Vlad & Co. How the fuck do you spin THAT? It will be quite challenging for them lolololololol.......

There has been a rush out the doors of the House of Representatives by Republicans who are inexplicably not running for reelection.

Has it been the same for Republican Senators? It doesn't seem like it.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 191August 26, 2018 12:41 PM

R191 Great observation. Curious indeed.

by Anonymousreply 192August 26, 2018 1:13 PM
Has it been the same for Republican Senators? It doesn't seem like it. Why?

Because of the difference in the election cycles. While all 435 members of the House of Representatives are up for election every two years, only one third of the Senate is. There are 33 seats up in November and of those only eight are held by Republicans. Two of those Repubs are retiring. So, while it may not seem like the same "run for the doors" phenomenon is happening in the Senate, percentage wise two of eight is one quarter of the Rethug Senators up for reelection is good and probably on par or better than the House. Would love it if there were more, obviously.

by Anonymousreply 215August 26, 2018 6:46 PM

Pecker buying and suppressing salacious stories involving Trump, particularly during the election year; plus running false, nasty stories on a few GOP primary candidates plus HRC, is quite disgusting. Hopefully giving him immunity will be worth it, and he discloses truth about everything: and the full content of what was in that safe was turned over to Mueller's investigators. Cohen could know if Pecker is holding back.

by Anonymousreply 219August 26, 2018 7:06 PM

Jason Chaffetz seems to be a forgotten character in this whole saga. He abruptly resigned from Congress shortly after re-election, then became a Fox News contributor. His reason for resigning was vague, and spoke about having more family time.

He was aggressively involved in investigating HRC, and was an early Trump supporter. Comey disclosed little about his conversations with Chaffetz when Comey was doing the HRC Email pronouncements.

Something was very strange about Chaffetz's actions.

Trump has said nicer things about Putin and Kim than he has about McCain after his death. Trump followed his pathetic “condolences” tweet with rants about his usual topics and then went golfing. From Axios this morning>>>

Congressional Republicans are getting ready for hell.

Axios has obtained a spreadsheet that's circulated through Republican circles on and off Capitol Hill — including at least one leadership office — that meticulously previews the investigations Democrats will likely launch if they flip the House.

Why this matters: Publicly, House Republicans are putting on a brave face about the midterms. But privately, they are scrambling to prepare for the worst. This document, which catalogs requests Democrats have already made, is part of that effort.

It has churned Republican stomachs. Here are some of the probes it predicts:

President Trump’s tax returns

Trump family businesses — and whether they comply with the Constitution's emoluments clause, including the:

Chinese trademark grant to the Trump Organization

Trump's dealings with Russia, including the president's preparation for his meeting with Vladimir Putin

The payment to Stephanie Clifford — a.k.a. Stormy Daniels

James Comey's firing

Trump's firing of U.S. attorneys

Trump's proposed transgender ban for the military

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's business dealings

White House staff's personal email use

Cabinet secretary travel, office expenses, and other misused perks

Discussion of classified information at Mar-a-Lago

Jared Kushner's ethics law compliance

Dismissal of members of the EPA board of scientific counselors

The travel ban

Family separation policy

Hurricane response in Puerto Rico

Election security and hacking attempts

White House security clearances

The spreadsheet — which I'm told originated in a senior House Republican office — catalogs more than 100 formal requests from House Democrats this Congress, spanning nearly every committee.

The spreadsheet includes requests for administration officials to be grilled by committee staff, requests for hearings to obtain sworn testimony, efforts to seize communications about controversial policies and personnel decisions, and subpoena threats.

These demands would turn the Trump White House into a 24/7 legal defense operation.

The bottom line: Thanks to their control of Congress, Republicans have blocked most of the Democrats’ investigative requests. But if the House flips, the GOP loses its power to stymie. Lawyers close to the White House tell me the Trump administration is nowhere near prepared for the investigatory onslaught that awaits them, and they consider it among the greatest threats to his presidency. [End of Axios]

=========================== DL, I would add investigations into Roherbacher, Nunez, Chafetz and Gowdy.

by Anonymousreply 248August 26, 2018 11:45 PM

The problem is going to be that, even with Dems working 24/7/365, it's going to take twelve years to investigate these fucking criminals.

by Anonymousreply 249August 26, 2018 11:50 PM

It will give the next Democratic president cover to get things done.

by Anonymousreply 250August 27, 2018 12:04 AM

And add, a major inquiry into Kellyanne's flappers.

by Anonymousreply 251August 27, 2018 12:06 AM

Of course, the Republicans could have avoided this if they'd been more loyal to their country than their party.

by Anonymousreply 259August 27, 2018 2:48 AM

R248, I hope the Dems also look into Manafort's treason and the right-wing's culpability for the Russian invasion of Crimea.

Feodosia, the Black Sea resort town in Ukraine’s Russian-dominated Crimean Peninsula, is usually a peaceful place .. For Lt. Colonel Tom Doman, Feodosia was a shitshow from the minute his detachment of 113 reserve Marines and sailors arrived there in the dark on the morning of May 27, 2006.

“We had rocks thrown at us. Rocks hit Marines. Buses were rocked back and forth. We were just trying to get to our base,” Doman, the Marines’ executive officer, told me and my colleagues last year.

The Marines had been sent in as an advance party for an upcoming NATO military exercise, part of a blossoming in relations between Ukraine and the United States. In addition to constructing facilities for the exercise, the Marines were coming prepared to do some civil affairs work for the local population. “Ukraine wanted to come into NATO. We were trying to build our relations,” Doman said. “It was a total surprise we would get that type of [reception].”

Inconveniently for Manafort, there may exist evidence that the unrest was no surprise to him.

“As I reported last year, American officials remain convinced that the attacks on Marines in Feodosia were organized by the mob-connected, Kremlin-friendly Party of Regions, which was then trying to restore its influence in the region with Paul Manafort’s help.

In short: An American citizen who helped elect a conservative president with a strong patriotic, pro-military message was on the payroll of a foreign group that the U.S. government believes directly threatened its military personnel and undermined its foreign policy. Ukrainian officials and some former U.S. diplomats I’ve spoken to are convinced that Manafort knew about, and possibly helped plan, the anti-American protests.”

The Marines eventually had to abscond under cover of darkness to escape unscathed, George W. Bush scrapped further efforts to bring Ukraine into the NATO alliance, and Yanukovych, with the help of Manafort and pro-Russian fervor fueled by the attacks in Crimea, was elected Ukraine’s President... after which Russia annexed the Ukrainian province.

Why was The Enquirer allowed to print so many vicious lies about Hillary, week after week?? Just vicious lies and everyone just accepted it. Cnn and MSNBC never came to her aid...they just allowed Trump and his supporters to libel her week after week...I blame the bastards for what happened to our country. Trump is criminal sewage and the media never reported the truth about him. Now it is just too late.

by Anonymousreply 270August 27, 2018 5:41 AM

R270 I think because supposedly no intelligent, world-read, thinking person takes anything The Enquirer writes seriously. No one protested it because they felt it they didn't need to dignify it. No credibility.... Turned out to be a big mistake! The constant headlines mapping supermarket shelves alone sunk into people's subconscious's. It could somewhat explain so many people's irrational hatred of Hillary, when there's no evidence she ever did anything so bad as to deserve it.

The big irony is this: All the stories they published about Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Ted Cruz, etc, were all completely made up and false. The very definition of fake news stories. But all the stories they uncovered about Donald Trump and buried? The "catch and kill"? Those were all true!!!! Kind of a reverse First Amendment.

by Anonymousreply 271August 27, 2018 5:55 AM

Why would Graham sell his soul to the Devil? Honestly, Graham must be, being blackmailed by someone in Russia or maybe a lousy Trump supporter.

by Anonymousreply 272August 27, 2018 6:02 AM

You know, for years after Carol Burnett sued the Enquirer and won, they stopped printing stories that were blatantly, provably false. Then they started again. Hillary has better things to do, but she could sue them and win in court.

by Anonymousreply 273August 27, 2018 6:27 AM

So the media has decided Miss Lindzey is the "go to guy" for personal, expert analysis on both Donald Trump and the late John McCain? Nobody is asking her about those golf outings with DJT and her motives for attacking federal investigators.

by Anonymousreply 274August 27, 2018 10:20 AM

Graham is being used, for sure. Either he does it willingly (promised something precious in return) or he is being blackmailed. But why would Graham let himself get blackmailed this late in life? He should just come forward and say what the blackmailers have on him and then retire. I mean how many years does he think he has left? He should look at his buddy McCain. Tick-tock.

And yeah, the GOP is greedy but also weak in other ways, too (racism, closet cases, mistresses, abortions, secret societies / statanic cults, pedophilia, etc.).

by Anonymousreply 277August 27, 2018 10:40 AM

The fact that McCain will be lying in state; and will rightly be accorded a grand funeral attended by former Presidents, and luminaries various - has of course to get under the great pretender's worthless skin.

The occasion will of course (again rightly) in all the eulogies cast its woeful light on the prevailing decadence. It cannot be otherwise. Such symbolism is in fact rather astonishing in its timing.

The only question is quite how the shameless pretender will try to pull focus. No doubt his terrified handlers will seek any means possible to distract those itchy sociopathic tweeting thumbs.

by Anonymousreply 278August 27, 2018 11:13 AM

You can bet that Trump is trying to trump (no pun intended) the funeral with some big stunt and draw the attention back to him.

by Anonymousreply 280August 27, 2018 11:23 AM

Lindsay Graham and the Big Flip. Maybe it's just the simplest reason: he's a bad person. Corrupt, venal, whatever. He was just able to put a smooth veneer over it while there was a reasonably sane person in the WH but now his true personality emerges.

by Anonymousreply 281August 27, 2018 11:30 AM

r270, it's not the press and the media's job to defend HIllary against any claims made against her; that's up to Hillary's own people and Hillary herself.

The press is supposed to be there just to ask questions; and even more importantly, follow up questions, to try to discern the truth for the American people. Ideally they are not there to take either side.

However, nothing today is very ideal, is it?

A most recent poll indicates Trump's favorability numbers remain basically unchanged.

While the Republican party numbers are shrinking, those remaining retain fervor for Trump. Beyond Kasich and a few others who are basically sidelined in terms of party power, there is no one in the party to challenge Trump head-on. (WSJ poll last week; 42% approve, 52% disapprove).

Only Democrats (not third parties, socialists groups,, independent candidates, etc.) can bring Trump down (beyond Mueller's findings). Democrats need to soberly realize the challenge ahead to prevent further encroachment of fascism. It is certainly doable, but will not be a mellow fight. Democrats need huge mid-terms gains, including a national campaign to flip the Senate which will be a very tough challenge.

Isn't his base only like 20% of the electorate? That he has a rock solid 20% behind him? And that 90% of Republicans fully support him? Can someone reconcile these numbers for me? What do they mean?

by Anonymousreply 307August 27, 2018 7:07 PM

So basically he's giving free money to farmers and totally deregulating coal - with possible subsidies for coal.

R307, I'm not sure, but it looks like 42% of the population as a whole approve.

r306, given that this is Trump I'd follow that money. I would be very suprised if that money does reach mom and pop's (soy bean) farmers.

by Anonymousreply 311August 27, 2018 7:12 PM

R311, I think it actually is reaching them - it's basically a bribe for November. If it were any other time, I'm sure it'd be pocketed by random grifters.

by Anonymousreply 312August 27, 2018 7:13 PM

Or it wouldn't be offered at all. Is this an ongoing payment while the tariffs are in plac or a one time deal?

by Anonymousreply 313August 27, 2018 7:15 PM

R313, it's like the one from July, I think.

So he causes a crisis for these farmers, and it turns into a huge money pit for us.

Traitor simply does not know the difference between being “strong”, and being petty, or fearful, or for that matter, being weak. Everything is opposite world with him. It’s truly mind boggling.

by Anonymousreply 318August 27, 2018 7:54 PM

Just saw a thread of people honoring McCain and talking about how he should be remembered as a hero despite voting with Dotard for 83% of the time. Someone cited that he should be regaled for taking a stand (along with the two others) against the repeal of Obamacare... and then someone promptly reminded everyone that the only reason he didn't vote for it was a procedural thing and that was the only reason. If they had gone about it properly he would have voted for it.

I completely forgot about that.

by Anonymousreply 319August 27, 2018 9:57 PM

McCain was pretty far right, let's not forget it. He was just from a different time when Senator's worked together.

by Anonymousreply 320August 27, 2018 10:02 PM

R319 But the whole point was if the bill to repeal Obamacare had gone through the proper Senate procedures it would have been held up in committee or get watered down. The Republicans were rushing it through to give Trump a "victory" and McCain slapped them down. I think it took courage to go against the mad herd especially when it was supposed to be his own herd.

by Anonymousreply 321August 27, 2018 10:03 PM

The death of McCain is the death of the old-school, patriotic Republican party. That is what a lot of people are mourning. Yes, many old-style Republicans were not great people, but they were not spineless sell-outs.

The whole flag fiasco today should be the final straw for many. There are no words to describe how he could fuck this up. Why It Can Happen Here

We’re very close to becoming another Poland or Hungary.

By Paul Krugman

Aug. 27, 2018

...
Many Trump critics celebrated last week’s legal developments, taking the Manafort conviction and the Cohen guilty plea as signs that the walls may finally be closing in on the lawbreaker in chief. But I felt a sense of deepened dread as I watched the Republican reaction: Faced with undeniable evidence of Trump’s thuggishness, his party closed ranks around him more tightly than ever.
A year ago it seemed possible that there might be limits to the party’s complicity, that there would come a point where at least a few representatives or senators would say, no more. Now it’s clear that there are no limits: They’ll do whatever it takes to defend Trump and consolidate power.

The End of Impunity

What Democrats can do with subpoena power.

Michelle Goldberg

Aug. 27, 2018
This culture of impunity is less a result of Trump’s political skill — he’s deeply unpopular — than of one-party rule. The majority of voters want a check on this administration, but the Republican Party doesn’t care; it’s beholden to a minority that delights in the helplessness of fellow citizens. If Democrats take the House in the November midterms — which the model of the statistics website FiveThirtyEight gives them about a 70 percent chance of doing — that helplessness ends. Contrary to Republican claims, there are no Democratic plans for imminent impeachment proceedings. But there will be subpoenas, hearings and investigations. Things that haven’t mattered for the past 19 months suddenly will.

Frustration With Racism Is Coming to the Ballot Box

A new poll shows people of color feel disrespected and fed up — and they stand to influence many of the most competitive House races.

By Derrick Johnson

Mr. Johnson is the president and chief executive of the N.A.A.C.P.

Aug. 27, 2018

... This poll, a survey conducted for the N.A.A.C.P. by the African-American Research Collaborative, Latino Decisions and Asian Decisions, analyzed the views of African-American, white, Latino, Asian-American and Native American voters in 61 of the nation’s most competitive midterm races. We found that African-Americans stand to play a key role in 21 of these races, making up from 7 to 24 percent of the voting-age population. In 31 of the key races, voters of color represent 20 to 78 percent of the voting-age population and are positioned to have a significant impact.

Based on this, we expect their perceptions of Mr. Trump’s racism and his party’s acceptance of it will motivate them to cast votes for Democratic candidates.

According to the survey, 77 percent of blacks believe Mr. Trump’s statements and policies will set race relations back. Of white voters, 51 percent feel this way, while 75 percent of Latinos, 75 percent of Asians and 64 percent of Native Americans agree.

Eighty-one percent of black respondents were angry at Mr. Trump for something he has said or done, while 61 percent of whites felt the same. Unsurprisingly, the poll also revealed that 82 percent of black voters felt disrespected by something Mr. Trump has said or done, while only half of white voters did.

Among black people, Mr. Trump’s rhetoric and policies tended more to create negative emotions, with survey respondents associating them with words like “angry,” “disrespected,” “ashamed” and “afraid.”

... Whether we look at the Justice Department’s pushing back against consent decrees to rein in police misconduct, Mr. Trump’s nearly all white and male judicial nominees, or the Education Department’s decision to pull back on investigations of civil rights cases, we see a pattern that devalues the gains that many earned through the ultimate sacrifice. It would seem that Mr. Trump’s White House is engaged in none other than a war against civil rights.

We have waged war against the foes of civil rights for over 109 years, and, as such, perseverance in this fight inspires no fear in us. But if voters of color, along with white voters who see what we’ve experienced during this presidency, take their frustration to the ballot box, we can win the next battle.

New episode, they debate Democrats talking about impeachment in advance of November's elections. Formal debate; they're assigned positions and must argue for them.

I think I concluded from this that it makes sense to talk about impeachment where one's district is clamoring for it. But it's best not to discuss that in more conservative districts (e.g., Conor Lamb's).

Michael Cohen’s lawyer has done real damage to the case against Trump

By Aaron Blake

Senior reporter

August 27 at 2:38 PM

... In a new interview with The Washington Post’s Tom Hamburger and Rosalind S. Helderman, Davis is backing off two massive claims he made in recent weeks, including that former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen has told people he witnessed President Trump being informed of Donald Trump Jr.'s 2016 Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer before it happened.

... Davis also backed off his claim that Cohen has information suggesting that Trump knew in advance about Russian hacking of Democrats’ emails in 2016.

... However this came about, though, it’s damaging to Cohen’s credibility. Davis is his lawyer and spokesman, after all, which means these claims effectively came from Cohen himself. Davis is now trying to take ownership of them and take the blame himself, but the explanations he offers are really difficult to accept, especially given the gravity of the claims.

And that has bearing on both the Russia investigation and whatever problems Trump may encounter from the Southern District of New York’s plea deal with Cohen on a campaign-finance violation (in which Cohen also implicated Trump). Cohen was supposed to be the guy flipping on Trump and telling investigators everything he knows about the skeletons in Trump’s closet. This episode has to make everyone involved wonder whether his claims are all they’re made out to be. Regardless of how you want all of this to shake out, it’s best to base a case around people who won’t undermine it. Cohen wasn’t a fantastic witness before; he’s a worse one now.

A few posters have been thinking along the same lines as I have. Really likely that the NRA is funded by Russian dark money and the Repugs that back Trump have partaken of that money to finance their campaigns.. That puts them up against the ropes in terms of allegiance to the Pres..--so the NRA does indeed connect many of the dots.

I also recall that Manafort was walking the floor at the 2016 Republican National Convention. I bet he bought off (cash) a lot of Repugs up for re-election that year.

by Anonymousreply 399August 28, 2018 8:16 AM

The veterans love the conservative Republicans, because they declare themselves to be fiscal responsible, as in granting more money to the military.

In the veterans' minds the Republicans see war and fighting as the best solution to fix problems and the Democrats see negotiation as the best way to fix problems. As veterans they would feel humiliated if they'd be no longer considered heroes but mere pawns for some war mongering profiteers. Like Deplorables they cannot admit that they've been had.

by Anonymousreply 400August 28, 2018 8:28 AM

It is quite possible that the reason Mueller doesn't want a deal with Manafort is because Mueller wants as much Russian conspiracy to hit the light of day in open court as possible, prohibiting Trumpublicans from burying it in an unreleased report.

Trump is a greedy self aggrandizing pig. Whether it's the VA or any other federal department he will enrich himself and his cronies. He will reward greed ad graft in others so a Congressman or cabinet official who is corrupt or a Paul Manafort gets praise from him. Remember the old saying "a chain is only as strong as its weakest link"? The Republicans believe that by cutting off the weakest link they, or their idea of America, gets stronger. The only problem with that is that with each new weakest link they would cut off a new one emerges until there is nothing left of the chain. And people got brainwashed to believe that it is indeed in their own best interest to cut off the weakest link and demonize and shame those representing the weakest link in (American) society. By how? Political pundits and Republican owned media. The constant media exposure and, destroying eductation, and fighting for the right to make the gun industry rich created this toxic enviroment that made POTUS Donald Trump possible.

Deadline nears for Mueller to decide whether to retry Manafort on 10 counts in Virginia case

Special counsel Robert Mueller is running out of time to decide whether to retry Paul Manafort on the handful of charges that didn't yield convictions from his bank fraud and tax crime trial.

Federal prosecutors on Mueller's team now have until Wednesday to inform Judge T.S. Ellis whether they plan to try again for guilty verdicts on those remaining counts or whether they will dismiss them from Manafort's indictment.

But legal experts say Mueller's team is unlikely to bother with a retrial.

On the 538 podcast from yesterday, they were saying that Dems hope Ward wins, since she's so wacky. She'd likely lose in November. I thought that would be very risky, because Ward could indeed win, but it seems that if McSally wins, she's going to be in the pocket of the Trump cult, including Ward, anyway.

Devin Nunes flew to the U.K. this month to gather intel on Chris Steele from MI5, MI6, & GCHQ. But the agencies—wary that he was “trying to stir up a controversy," per a source—didn't meet with him.

Nunes was investigating, among other things, Steele’s own service record and whether British authorities had known about his repeated contact with a U.S. Justice Department official named Bruce Ohr.

His trip to London at such a precarious moment for the president, and the intelligence agencies’ decision to decline him a meeting, is emblematic of the political island on which Nunes finds himself—along with a handful of other Trump allies in Congress and the media—as he continues his search for wrongdoing by the Justice Department.

By the responsible sane media the tone will be functional and neutral at absolute best. No one will come close to being able to fake respect, let alone reverence or fondness.

Said neutral tone also depends on just how much is revealed by Mueller and various lawsuits. If deep financial corruption and treason is proven, the funeral would probably have to be sequestered, accessible only by Fox News. (When Margaret Thatcher died, there were genuine fears about loud demos in London on the day of her funeral. And what ever people thought about her, she wasn't considered a traitor.)

If any Deplorables remain to mourn so worthless a life, there'll probably be a few cross-burning ceremonies, white hoods preferred as a mark of respect, the chant of 'Lock Her Up!' ringing long into the night.

What if Trump Did Actually Shoot Someone on Fifth Avenue?

Your vote in the midterms matters, because Republicans in Congress won’t restrain the president’s excesses.

Thomas L. Friedman

Aug. 28, 2018

... That’s because we all now know that Trump was right when he said he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and his supporters would stick with him. We’ve seen him get away with too much by now. No restraint on Trump will ever come from his party or his base — especially after the passing of John McCain. So save your breath. Trump will be restrained only if his party loses the House or the Senate. That’s what is at stake in the midterm elections — so vote accordingly.

And for those Republican moderates, independents and suburban white women who voted for Trump in 2016 and are considering voting against G.O.P. House and Senate candidates in November to put some limits on the president and show their disapproval at G.O.P. lawmakers’ failure to act as an independent branch of government, let me describe the stakes in another way:

America, we all know, won the Cold War. Our values and economic system proved superior to Russia’s. But what is at stake in the 2018 midterms is who is going to win the post-Cold War.

Yes, that question is back on the table. Because what we are seeing in the behavior of Trump and his toadies in the G.O.P. is the beginnings of the Russification of American politics. Vladimir Putin could still win the post-Cold War.

... “The Russification of America under Trump, it’s not just about collusion, corruption and money laundering,” said Gorbis. “It is about his behavior” — crass language, simplistic slogans reminiscent of the Soviet rhetoric, use of terms such as “enemy of the people,” and his insistence on personal loyalty over loyalty to the Constitution or institutions.

Maybe that’s why Trump and Putin understand and appreciate each other — and why so many Russians like Trump. They say, “He is just like us — no better and no worse.”

There are other parallels between Trumpism and Putinism: the glorification of oil, gas and mining over science and technology; the elevation of white, Christian, nationalist values; and the neutering of the legislative branch — today’s G.O.P.-dominated Congress behaves just like the rubber-stamp Russian Duma. Worse, this Russification of politics is also spreading — to the Philippines, Turkey, Hungary, Poland and maybe soon to Brazil.

A few more years of this Russification of America and the rot will be everywhere. Russia will have won the post-Cold War, and the fictional story at the top of this column will become nonfiction — just like that. Remember that when you vote in the midterms.

I fear that, even with voter suppression, gerrymandering, on-site intimidation and harassment, we'll have won the House, BUT because of vote manipulation by Russia and/or domestic actors, the GOP will retain it and "look into what happened."

But I guess there's nothing ordinary people can do to ensure the votes are tabulated correctly. The federal government isn't going to do anything, and most states have GOP governors and legislatures, and they're not going to do anything.

R459 It's not surprising, actually. In the 70s, the ACLU fought for Neo-Nazis to march through a Jewish neighborhood in Illinois. It's the same principled defense of free speech with the NRA - basically, that if the state targets an advocacy group that promotes a lawful activity by penalizing them financially, they're limiting their right to free speech and setting a dangerous precedent. I understand the position, but am not such a high-minded purist. The ACLU does good work, but there are other organizations that are just as deserving of my money.

Kushner Companies fined by city for falsified construction permits,

The move comes after multiple reports of the firm misrepresenting the status of rent-regulated units in several of its apartment buildings, in order to illegally perform construction work. The DOB cited 42 different violations across 17 buildings in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Multiple investigations (by the Housing Rights Initiative, among others) have found that Kushner Companies skirted New York’s rent-stabilization rules at these buildings (either by falsifying permits or not registering regulated apartments with the state), thereby making it easier to make renovations and take units out of rent regulation.

In a statement provided to Curbed, a spokesperson for the DOB said that “Protecting tenants is a key part of our mission to make construction safe for all New Yorkers, and we are determined to hold landlords accountable for the accuracy of their applications—no matter who they are.”

Kushner Companies told the Times that “paperwork errors” are to blame for the false permits, and that “[i]n no case did the company act in disregard of the safety of our tenants.”

Just yesterday, HRI unveiled its latest investigation, which found that President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, engaged in similar practices—falsifying construction permits and de-regulating rent-stabilized apartments—at three Manhattan buildings that he had previously owned.

DeSantis was endorsed by trump. Registered republicans vote blindly for Whomever trump says. That’s where 90 percent approval within the party shows. Thank goodness it’s 90% of 23%

by Anonymousreply 499August 29, 2018 1:04 AM

Yup, I agree the evangelicals and the NRA are in bed with Russia. The evangelicals are already brainwashed and the gun nuts are often violent hate mongers.

by Anonymousreply 500August 29, 2018 1:04 AM

Blech! Lizard head won his primary for the Senate.

Not crazy about Nelson, I but I won't ever vote for Lizard Head.

by Anonymousreply 501August 29, 2018 1:07 AM
Yup, I agree the evangelicals and the NRA are in bed with Russia.

I think it's likely... but they're such dimwits they aren't in collusion, they've been infiltrated.

Do you suppose the Russians' plan is to infiltrate, cause havoc, and then reveal they've been behind it all along, leaving the whole system shattered, with no one knowing who to trust? I really can't believe the success they've had with the Republican Party. I mean, I knew it wasn't filled with the smartest people, but there were some. Still, McConnell, Graham, Ryan... so many obviously compromised and selling out their party... it's amazing to me.

by Anonymousreply 502August 29, 2018 1:10 AM

It's like every evil cause is part of the cult: fossil fuels, evangelicals, gun nuts, other extractive industry, ... Nazis...

by Anonymousreply 503August 29, 2018 1:13 AM

R502, they'll never reveal that they were behind anything.

by Anonymousreply 504August 29, 2018 1:13 AM

I'm inclined to screw with any cult members I know personally. Like reveal secrets they're ashamed of etc.

by Anonymousreply 505August 29, 2018 1:15 AM

From the article posted above:

*How did McConnell know that a Republican would be elected President in 2016, causing him to block the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court in an unprecedented move that he now refuses to even publicly acknowledge happened?

*Why did Mitch block the formation of a new bipartisan committee to investigate Russian interference in our elections, despite a letter signed by senior lawmakers of both parties asking him to do so?

*Why did Mitch wait less than 24 hours after the raid on former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen’s office and home to announce that there would be no bill protecting the Mueller investigation?

by Anonymousreply 506August 29, 2018 1:16 AM

R502 the Russians took advantage of an opportunity. The Republican Party was an opening once the Tea Party and the other extremists took it over and started getting more and more "socially conservative." The Russians have been hanging around agitating and disrupting for years. They thrive on discord and chaos. THey've probably had certain eople on the payroll and sleepers for decades. But never in their wildest dreams did they ever think they could be so effective until the internet, and social media presented them with the tools to sit there in St. Petersburg and Moscow, and use technology to achieve their dreams.

by Anonymousreply 507August 29, 2018 1:16 AM

In wonder if this mess will make us stronger in the end. Like a decade out. Will we have learned from all of this and restored and reinvigorated our democracy? Will we be very vigilant?

Or will Facebook and Twitter keep dragging us to hell?

by Anonymousreply 508August 29, 2018 1:21 AM

Does Topher Dimaggio count?

by Anonymousreply 509August 29, 2018 1:22 AM

A decade out, r508? No. But maybe 25-50 years. Like post Nazi Germany, it’ll take a few generations for the worst parts of us to die off.

by Anonymousreply 510August 29, 2018 1:24 AM

Nunes is such a fucking loose cannon. He couldn't keep a secret if it was tattooed on his spleen!

by Anonymousreply 511August 29, 2018 1:24 AM

Poor Lindsay. He lost the love of his life. No more unsheathed poundings on every other thursday. Perhaps he can console himself with some Kushner cock?

by Anonymousreply 512August 29, 2018 1:25 AM

r509 that is Senatrice's Linz gay porn star lova. Allegedly.

by Anonymousreply 513August 29, 2018 1:26 AM
it’ll take a few generations for the worst parts of us to die off.

Exactly.... it's the stupid (and I mean stupid) Republican base.... that's all the Republican politicians have left so they pander to it. It is the most craven, ugly thing I have seen in politics ever.

by Anonymousreply 514August 29, 2018 1:27 AM

Was anyone around and remember or does anyone know if Nixon's supporters were this fanatical about him until the very end?

by Anonymousreply 515August 29, 2018 1:29 AM

I've shat out turds less gross than Nunes

by Anonymousreply 516August 29, 2018 1:29 AM

Damn. Rachel is connecting all the dots tonight. She is pointing out, analyzing the systematic fucking Trump is giving to Justice department officials who's jobs directly affect this investigation and other investigations. International organized crime, counter Intelligence, etc.etc.etc. Putin must have really kicked Trump's ass in Helsinki. The Right Wing Extremists in the media are piling on one lie after another on Bruce Ohr. Who is responsible for the international organized crime operation of DOJ. And yes, he is involved in the Russia investigation. There is a Russian mob element to the investigation. She confirmed that tonight, too. We have to stop this shit. I wish it was October! I know Trump and his gang will try to hang on to power as much as they can and they will not go quietly. They will fight every single step of the way and try a lot of stuff that will frighten us. That period between November voting and January 3rd 2019 is going to be harrowing.

by Anonymousreply 517August 29, 2018 1:31 AM

Ray Romano should play Nunes in the movie.

by Anonymousreply 518August 29, 2018 1:31 AM

Fucking Bernie Sanders endorsed African American man won the Dem nomination for Governor. In Florida. So now we are to believe that Florida will elect a Democrat? I hate to seem cynical, but IMO the strategy is to insure that the Democratic nominee is too far Left, or otherwise lacking in the ability to get the votes they need to win. Am I suggesting Florida is filled with racists? Yes. I am. And Any time I See that a candidate was hand picked and endorsed by Bernie I get real pissed off.

by Anonymousreply 519August 29, 2018 1:34 AM

R515, the cult-like worship of Trump, the elevation of personality over values, is unique. Nixon’s core supporters were ideological; Trump’s core supporters love only him.

by Anonymousreply 520August 29, 2018 1:36 AM

Trump's supporters are rabid fangurls.

by Anonymousreply 521August 29, 2018 1:39 AM

Yeah, Turnip is completely new. All he needs to do, is make an accusation, with no evidence, and everybody jumps. The media, the law enforcement community, etc. They should just ignore him like the military does.

I attribute this to Fox.

by Anonymousreply 522August 29, 2018 1:41 AM

Yes, Florida will elect a stump that wears blue. Floridians hate Trump.

by Anonymousreply 523August 29, 2018 1:43 AM

Why is Andrew Gillum simply a "Bernie Sanders endorsed African American"? He had prominent supporters besides Bernie Sanders, and in any case his voters were presumably making their decision based on the merits of his campaign, not just on an endorser's say-so. R519 doesn't give FL Democrats much credit.

by Anonymousreply 524August 29, 2018 1:56 AM

I voted for Levine but I am fine with Gillium but it seemed odd to see the win only two hours after the polls closed.

by Anonymousreply 525August 29, 2018 2:04 AM

R524, watch who takes credit (and I'll bet he does it before the night is even over). That's why he's being called a Bernie pick.

by Anonymousreply 526August 29, 2018 2:08 AM

Oh my god -- you Floridians better wake the fuck up! The fix is now in for DeSantis. Gillam barely registered in the polls. I myself voted for Graham as the most likely to win in the general. And to have Gillam win the primary is a catastrophe for us Democrats. Let me explain.

White trash deplorabes who never would have bothered to vote in the mid-terms are going to come out of the woodwork to vote against a black man for governor. And because of that, the Rs may capture more seats in the House and that crooked mfer Scott will win in the Senate.

In addition, Republicans who were leaning toward voting for Graham as the sentimental favorite in the general have lost that chance, so they'll vote or DeSantis.

There are not enough people of color (I checked the demographics) in Florida who will rally to Gillam to counteract the effects of the deplorables and the now-right-leaning (used to be undecided) Republicans.

Sadly, the Democrats can kiss FL goodbye for another four years.

But it does make me wonder why a man who was barely on the radar would win the FL Democratic nomination. I think Bill Nelson was on the right track.

by Anonymousreply 527August 29, 2018 2:12 AM

And his city hall is under FBI investigation. And he takes Soros PAC money which the right-wing will push non-stop. I wish Bernie would stay the fuck out of Democratic business since he's not a goddamn Democrat.

by Anonymousreply 528August 29, 2018 2:14 AM

How did they find out that Duncan Hunter broke campaign finance law? And why aren't they investigating someone else who used funds to rent a private plane to stalk the Pope and admitted it had nothing to do with his campaign?

by Anonymousreply 529August 29, 2018 2:17 AM

Ugh. Bernie screws us once again in Florida.

by Anonymousreply 530August 29, 2018 2:18 AM
I think Bill Nelson was on the right track.

About what? Not being snarky, I want to know.

by Anonymousreply 531August 29, 2018 2:20 AM

R531, that the vote is already being hacked.

by Anonymousreply 532August 29, 2018 2:22 AM

Please don't let the next Democratic president (if we're ever allowed to have one in a free and fair ejection) be "forgiving" towards the GOP and "looking to work together to rebuild the country."

Please don't let it be an Obama-type appeaser. Please don't forget the courts and getting judicial nominees through the Senate. Learn from Obama's mistakes. Emphasize how important voting in the following midterms is: hold rallies like Trump to get out the vote. Don't rely on celebrities.

No more "resets" with Russia, either, please. We know what they are more. Truly.

by Anonymousreply 533August 29, 2018 2:25 AM

We know what they are *now

by Anonymousreply 534August 29, 2018 2:27 AM

Elections are being hacked? Surely the Republicans will step in and intervene???

by Anonymousreply 535August 29, 2018 2:33 AM

I want the next Democratic president (should we ever have one) to KICK REPUBLICAN ASS!!!!

No more of this appeasing bullshit from people like Obama and Pelosi.

by Anonymousreply 536August 29, 2018 2:34 AM

I think we should confiscate all property owned by Russian nationals that is not a primary residence. Somebody tell Liz Warren. That will hit them where it hurts. And make Brooklyn and Miami affordable again, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 537August 29, 2018 2:36 AM
that the vote is already being hacked.

Dems on twitter are marveling that Gillam pulled an upset. I have not read any tweets about people being suspicious, but it is interesting.

by Anonymousreply 538August 29, 2018 2:38 AM

R536, impeachment of Dubya, or Cheney, would have been a waste of time. It would never have passed the Senate. I can’t blame Nancy for taking it off the table. They had plenty to do, and little time to do it, when they had the votes in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 539August 29, 2018 2:40 AM

R538 I'm just reading people say that he's an amazing candidate...

by Anonymousreply 540August 29, 2018 2:41 AM

You bunch of racist lowlifes should shut the fuck up. Florida is a very diverse state. The Russians are going to be gunning for our candidate and since trump will do nothing about it, republicans may be given the win. People in Florida are not spending much time paying attention to Bernie.

by Anonymousreply 541August 29, 2018 2:43 AM

Republicans are evil to the core and they always have been. They do not protect our middle class, they do not protect our environment , they do not care about the working citizens at all. They care about the super wealthy and about greedy corporations. I wish a revolution something like the French revolution would take place.

by Anonymousreply 542August 29, 2018 2:50 AM

We just need everyone to vote...

by Anonymousreply 543August 29, 2018 2:53 AM

Gillum in Florida was an early Hillary supporter in '16.

Sanders did make a late appearance to support Gillum for Governor. Other than Biden and Pelosi, there are very few Democrats that have strong recognition nationwide, presently.

by Anonymousreply 544August 29, 2018 2:56 AM

Yes, everyone vote! Get the word out!

by Anonymousreply 545August 29, 2018 2:58 AM

It's not the voting that counts, it's the counting of the votes that counts.

Did Gillum get the SJW Millennial vote? Will they bother to show up in November? In 2020? Or are they just going to set us up with candidates that aren't able to carry the Dem base and then ditch us because they're bored?

by Anonymousreply 546August 29, 2018 2:58 AM

The vote getting hacked in the Primary to make sure your opponent is someone you can beat is old school thinking with new technology. Gillum may be a very capable charismatic guy. But the Demographics a re not with him. The analysis that R527 gave ought to make everyone think. I tried to calm myself by saying, and by telling others, just vote for the Democrat in November. And I want to hold on to that. But I don't think it will work, because we really need to attract independents too. The GOP is an extremist party. they have always been a minority party but they are even moreso now. We need to give the independents a place to come to. Not saying Gillum is the wrong guy. Maybe he isn't. But right now I'm not feeling very daring. And no. I have no confidence in people doing the right thing. Don't tell me Floridians are smarter than I think, not when you have had Scott as your governor all these years. And Rubio? Sheee-it.

by Anonymousreply 547August 29, 2018 2:59 AM

No more "listening tours" and input from Republicans if we achieve a supermajority in 2020. End gerrymandering, protect voters, spend massively on cybersecurity. Protect the press. Eliminate fossil fuel subsidies. Expand trade (yes). Fuck with our foreign enemies - hard.

No more appeasement or "inclusion" of the Nazi cult. Obama tried. It failed miserably. No more.

by Anonymousreply 548August 29, 2018 2:59 AM

How many of you actually go to the polls vs mail-in ballots?

by Anonymousreply 549August 29, 2018 3:00 AM

Obama was like a moderate Carter-like appeaser. It sucked.

by Anonymousreply 550August 29, 2018 3:01 AM

Gillum was being investigated by the Feds right? Will he be able to still pull off a win like Duncan Hunter?

by Anonymousreply 551August 29, 2018 3:02 AM

R549, We vote early, even though Ohio only has one early polling station per county no matter how many people live there.

R548, You should include expanding the Supreme Court and returning the House to its intended number of representatives in your list.

No more Mr. Nice Dem 2020.

by Anonymousreply 552August 29, 2018 3:02 AM

Wait. So Florida Dems picked a guy under federal investigation as their candidate??? Face palm.

by Anonymousreply 553August 29, 2018 3:03 AM

I want the Democrats to elect a sidewinder as President. Someone like LBJ who knew how to punish his enemies. I look at Warren, Klobuchar, Harris, all idealistic, fighter, but they're honorable people. I don't want someone "honorable." I want a real rattle snake who will take it to them.

by Anonymousreply 554August 29, 2018 3:05 AM

That doesn't matter to rethuglican voters, r553.

It shouldn't matter to Dems, either.

by Anonymousreply 555August 29, 2018 3:06 AM

How about Avenatti, R554?

by Anonymousreply 556August 29, 2018 3:06 AM

Agreed, R554, as long as he/she doesn't get mired in his/her own scandals.

by Anonymousreply 557August 29, 2018 3:07 AM

I want to like Kamala Harris but there is something off about her.

by Anonymousreply 558August 29, 2018 3:13 AM

Beto needs to write a book like Harris had ready for next year.

by Anonymousreply 559August 29, 2018 3:20 AM

I don't mind Kamala I just don't like her being shoved down my throat.

by Anonymousreply 560August 29, 2018 3:21 AM

Have we heard anything from Mother Maxine of Ted Lieu?

by Anonymousreply 561August 29, 2018 3:21 AM

r558 She isn't going to get the wide appeal she needs- yet.

Warren has lost her sizzle. We need her in the Senate.

I think whoever get the Dem nomination will come from left field and be someone who isn't currently on the radar.

We need Dump and the Repugs to be crushed! I am worried about FL and the Senate race. We need to flip AZ and NV and hold everywhere else. If the Russians hack anything, it will be the Senate.

If they take the House, I can't imagine how happy and relieved I'll be. I don't know that I'll do to celebrate. If they don't... I guess this heavy dread I feel every day is going to feel much worse.

Republicans are planning to hammer Democrats on illegal immigration, claiming the party supports open borders and blanket amnesty, along with abolishing ICE and being soft on MS13.

I've said for awhile, don't let Republicans define the Democrats' stance on the issue. Dems need a strong, reasonable, collective policy. Going too far left on illegal immigration will cost votes. Hillary went to the left of Obama on immigration, but the targeted demographics on this under-showed for voting, with some voting not as anticipated.

by Anonymousreply 567August 29, 2018 3:26 AM

R565 if they don't it'll confirm to me that once again they got away with rigging.

by Anonymousreply 568August 29, 2018 3:26 AM

I can't wait until people start gaming the google search results so a ton of horrible words bring up Trump's fat face as the first result.

by Anonymousreply 569August 29, 2018 3:28 AM

If they win, I'll go to Disneyland (well, California Adventure) the following Saturday.

If they don't win back the House, I'll probably take the week off and lie in bed reading the news. I'll order lots of comfort food using Postmates or something. A lot of food. I'll have to get a massage everyday just to feel semi-normal.

by Anonymousreply 570August 29, 2018 3:31 AM

If the Dems take back the House in a huge way I will be drinking in ecstasy. If they lose the Senate, it will kill my buzz. We need the Senate almost as much as the House. We need Gov's.

If we don't I don't want to even go there. I can't go back to the feelings of 11/9.

by Anonymousreply 571August 29, 2018 3:33 AM
I can't go back to the feelings of 11/9.

Completely agree. A lot of people feel the same. I have a friend who hasn't turned on the TV since that night.

by Anonymousreply 572August 29, 2018 3:37 AM

If they take back the Senate or even just net gain seats in the Senate, I'll book a trip too a newly blue state. That if, if they win the House, too.

If they don't with the House, I might book an Ayahuasca retreat in Peru, to get reoriented to a nightmare world. I'll return home and try to volunteer to do what I can. ESL classes, maybe.

by Anonymousreply 573August 29, 2018 3:37 AM

Wait, why California Adventure and not Disneyland?

by Anonymousreply 574August 29, 2018 3:39 AM

Can we talk about what we'd do if we win both AND start impeachment?

We really should have that bar meet up.

by Anonymousreply 575August 29, 2018 3:39 AM

R572> I have several friends who refuse to watch the news or even talk about any of it. You bring up Trump, they get visibly upset, shut down and change the subject. They are Democrats btw.

by Anonymousreply 576August 29, 2018 3:40 AM

If we don’t take back the House, I could see people spontaneously taking to the streets. It would obviously be because the Russians rigged the mid-terms.

by Anonymousreply 577August 29, 2018 3:40 AM

I wonder if that would be the case R577 or if people will just have expected it.

by Anonymousreply 578August 29, 2018 3:44 AM

who the fuck would take diet or exercise advice from that bloated toad, Jones, FFS?

Good God, it would be like taking legal advice from The Ghoul.

by Anonymousreply 579August 29, 2018 3:49 AM

R574, I generally prefer the new over the old. It's still a newish park. And I want to show my support for the idea of Disney building new parks, and making those parks something other than Disneyland-style castle parks.
