Was Gillum's win in Florida another case of the sexism of the electorate in shitting on the female candidate? Kornacki was showing where Gillum overperformed and it was in the heavily Latino parts of the state. Machismo overcoming racism?
We're going to lose Florida now.

Go to hell, R20. If you haven't noticed, women have been winning everywhere this year. Now, suddenly in Florida, we get the gubernatorial candidate least likely to win in what is shaping up to be the year of the woman? And, sorry, but machismo is alive and well in Latino culture, especially in the Cuban parts of south Florida. So, fuck you, you ignorant piece of crap. Do you think I'm the only person saying that this just made it more difficult for us to win in Florida? You know nothing.

The Gillum win is just so strange--he wasn't polling above 16 percent in any of the polls listed at realclearpolitics, but then he jumps by nearly 20 points? I wish him well, but we already know Bill Nelson has said the Russians were trying to interfere in the Florida midterms and Florida's election security leaves a lot to be desired.
What better way to ensure a Republican victory than by pushing in a candidate who is A) African-American in a southern state, B)has the FBI sniffing around already and C) skews left and is demanding impeachment in a state where Trump, himself, is very popular on the right?
I hope to hell Gillum just had great outreach in Latino communities and brought out young voters--that could mean something in November. Otherwise, I'm nervous--particularly for Bill Nelson's senate seat.

by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 29, 2018 7:55 AM |
Exactly, R17 and that is my concern. There are two kinds of people. There are those naive, genuinely misguided yahoos who think this is a great time to "redefine" the Democratic Party and "rebuild" it pushing it farther to the Left. Bernie refused the Democratic Party nomination in his home state this year because he wants to remain " pure." But he is leading the charge to "reform" the Democratic Party and he is supporting and pushing for candidates who are further Left and also want to see "reforms" in many cases.
One thing is sure. The BernieBots have "joined" the Democratic Party in their various states to push for "reforms." I'm not saying they don't need to reform, but I am saying this is a very high risk game they're playing at a very bad time. We need to win the general election. Period. That is the only question to ask. Who c an win in the general?
The second group of people are not misguided fools and yahoos. They are the Evil People who are determined to win ugly if the must and so they try to choose their opponent. They will cross over and vote for the person least likely to win a general election if they can, and they will do what ever it takes to make sure their opponent is not electable. This is not some new tactic. There are no "new" tactics. But the fusion between the misguided and the Evil may very well result in the Democrats losing the general election.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 29, 2018 11:42 AM |
Interesting that I see no move on the part of more moderate Republicans to "reform" their party and push it closer to the mainstream.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 29, 2018 11:43 AM |
To the litany in R533 in the last thread about things we don't want the next Democrat president to do let me add: ignore the local party and the grass roots. We need to grow the base and cultivate new people from communities. No more of the Clintons', Obama's, and other Democrats' focus on national races and drawing candidates from the ranks of the establishments! For every Chelsea Clinton testing out a candidacy I want to see ten former city council members from small rust belt cities and whatever who worked their way up the ranks by getting potholes filled and championing legislation that helped people in palpable ways. More Howard Deans, fewer Rahm Emanuels. Let the Democratic party grow organically, not from the top down.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | August 29, 2018 12:13 PM |
I'm not "slagging off" the Clintons, R34 (never heard that expression before, btw), I'm specifically criticizing their and other Democrats' emphasizing national elections at the expense of local and state. It's how we got to a point where the majority of the voters is on the Democrats' side but the state legislatures and governors, as well as city councils and school boards, are a sea of red. A huge disaster that led to gerrymandering, voter suppression, and worse. Fuck off with your ad hominems.

R26, since when do Republicans care about candidates being investigated by the FBI? Did I miss something?
Deplorables aren’t going to vote for a Democrat anyway and reasonable people won’t be scared because of a rumored FBI investigation, especially since Trump, a known traitor and criminal, is under multiple investigations.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 29, 2018 12:24 PM |
Howard Dean was friends with the Clintons. He didn't get along with Rahm but who did? I too am tired of the shit within the Democratic Party. Hillary won.. There was nothing wrong with her message. Nothing wrong with her policies. There is no need to move farther to the Right . And moving further to the Left at this time is suicidal.
All change is incremental. Sweeping changes that scare people are jarring, and labeling is what defeats a movement. Go back and read your history. Go look at the evolution of the McGovern campaign. And look at how Nixon profited from it. Nixon considered Muskie his toughest foe in 1972. So his campaign strategy was to destroy Muskie in the primaries. He wanted to run against McGovern. McGovern got the nomination.
The only person who could have pushed the Democratic Party further Left and made it work was Robert Kennedy. Oops. We don't have a charismatic leader like that. And there is a myth about Socialism vs. Capitalism. All economies are mixed economies. There is no such thing as a pure socialist or a pure capitalist economy. We are already a mixture.
The GOP creates this whole anti tax movement which is their way of getting you to act against your interests and starve our government out of existence. We ought to pay taxes. especially the wealthiest of us. Eisenhower agreed with that premise. But the iteration of the Republican Party since Reagan and Goldwater is Anti Tax and "smaller government" (Both government employees and deficits blew up under 12 years of Reagan/Bush. ) The reality is that the Republican Party stands for huge deficits and corporate welfare. That's not a smear, it's a reality. That's what Trump and the rest are achieving. Starving certain government programs while at the same time, blowing up deficits and borrowing too much from foreign banking interests. It's a huge national security risk.

I have to say there's something slightly racist about assuming that Gillum didn't win this nomination on his own and he "must have had help from the Russkies" because no way would that many white Floridians ever vote for a black man for Governor.
He beat all his white opponents, so clearly he had to have had "help."

R41 I don't know much about the FL race, however, is it Racism? Are people expressing that as a Black man he shouldn't have been the nominee or that they're surprised because he's Black? The only thing I've read is that people are surprised because he wasn't even polling and somehow pulled off a major upset?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 29, 2018 1:39 PM |
Yes, Graham probably would have been a stronger candidate in the general election against the Rethug. And the Dem got a plurality of the votes, not a majority. He is likely going to have a tough time of it come November.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 29, 2018 1:51 PM |
There are a couple of factors in Florida that are weighing heavily in Gillum's win. First of all he got the black vote out massively AND he got the millennial vote out s well, because of the Parkland kids. Gillum has been endorsed by the Black Caucus and a few other groups as well. There is also a chance he could nominate Graham for his Lt Gov and shore up the centrist vote as well. Bernie was late to the party on this one, but the media is painting him as a Bernie Bro. He actually campaigned HEAVILY for Clinton in 2016.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | August 29, 2018 1:51 PM |
The Fl primary was for registered Dem voters only! Indep didn't factor in as they will in Nov. Gillum won because his message was opposed to the centrist Pap from the other three candidates. As a result The centrist message/vote got diluted/divided among three candidates . Will those who voted centrist and those indep voters come out to support the Dem party OR will they stay home and let a Trump supporting candidate win?
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 29, 2018 1:55 PM |
r19, r21, why do you assume that Graham only lost because she's a woman, and Gillum only won because of "machismo males" in South Florida? Huh? Isn't that just as SEXIST a thing to say as you are claiming the Gillum voters are?
So what if it's supposedly "The Year of the Woman"? that doesn't mean that woman are going to win the nominations everywhere or that they are going to automatically win everywhere either, better get used to that idea now.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 29, 2018 1:56 PM |

We’ve had a number of “year of the women” for the last 30 years. I’m skeptical of the descriptor.
I’m almost 60, and I’ve had female bosses frequently since 1992. It really isn’t odd to me to have a female in an authority position. I know there are dinosaurs out there, though, who can’t accept such a thing. Are they still numerous and influential?

I'm sure this has probably been discussed but I had a thought re: the Senatrice and why she's been sucking Traitor's tit.
We all know that he's probably scared of what could be dumped out about him but what if he's not being blackmailed?
What if instead he's trying to get out in front of everything (and prevent himself from being blackmailed) by working over time to get on Traitor's good side, get Sessions fired, take over as Attorney General and therefore putting himself in position to hide / cover up / bury the scoop about his indiscretions?

R21, Graham has supported the NRA.
She also built a shopping mall on the edge of the Everglades.
She’s not qualified to be she democratic candidate for FL gov. Maybe republican but not dem.
I mean, if Sarah palin ran for anything, I would not vote for her because she’s a woman. That’s the value of education, research & critical thinking...everything that Trump & Putin want out of reach to the masses

It wasn't racism that motivated me it was the fact that he seemed to come out of no where. I stand corrected by what R51 has explained. I've worked in a lot of statewide races, though never in Florida, and I always worry about the Republicans ability to fuck with people. They always have. They were doing it long before the Russians joined the party. Years ago the Russians were ideologically drawn to messing with the Democrats. But they couldn't get any traction. Obviously the Republican Party has an affinity with the Russians. From a strategy perspective it's Political Science 101 to try to pick your weakest opponent.

The ads have al ready started weeks ago, showing a person's feet, tap dancing while they smear Abrams. They also tried to close voting precincts in Black areas, etc. it's going to get a lot uglier too. These mad dogs will not be put down without a vicious fight.
Immigration is the bait. If they can get the Dems engaged in that discussion they can run their game. Dems need to keep talking about jobs and healthcare and if Immigration comes up show a photo of the little kids in cages.

Lindsey is too out front if she is trying to force Sessions out so she can grab the job for herself. It looks terribly self-serving, if true. Also, Lindsey will not escape scrutiny by the media as she always has done if she is nominated for AG. Lindsey probably could get the votes in the Senate, even from a few Dems after much debate, to get confirmed. But if she takes the job to destroy the Mueller investigation as Trump seeks, Lindsey will end up in American history as an even bigger enabler of the criminal enterprise of DJT-Russher.

McGahn’s departure is a clear signal that Trump is going to fire Sessions. McGahn stopped Trump from firing Sessions earlier, by threatening to resign in protest. McGahn also may have leaked info about a conversation with Trump in which Trump attempted to “correct” information McGahn had already supplied to Mueller.
I assume that McGahn has already cooperated fully with Mueller.

Another Strong Night for Democrats
Primary season is almost over. It’s been a good one for people who want to hold Trump accountable.
By David Leonhardt
... All told, the primary season has been quite good for Democrats. They have largely avoided nominating weak candidates in winnable districts. They have kept their focus on economic issues, where the public tends to support Democratic positions (as opposed to social issues or impeachment, on which voters are more evenly split). Meanwhile, President Trump continued acting in ways that have kept his approval ratings in the low 40s.
Last night’s results continued the trend. Combined, Arizona and Florida have nine House districts that Democrats have a legitimate chance to flip, according to the Cook Political Report. Solid Democratic candidates won the primaries in all nine.
... None of this guarantees that Democrats will retake the House in November. The party will need to continue running a strong campaign and, in all likelihood, an unusually strong turnout for a midterm. But as primary season comes to a close, it has mostly helped the Democrats’ chances.
Arguably, the most complicated result for Democrats last night was the one that received the most attention. In the Florida governor's primary, Andrew Gillum — the mayor of Tallahassee, endorsed by Bernie Sanders — won a victory many progressives are celebrating. Yet some political analysts think a losing candidate — Gwen Graham, a former congresswoman — had a better chance of winning the general election this fall. Even if those analysts are right, though, I think the congressional races are more important than any governor’s race.
....

Inspiring challengers deserve voters’ support as they face business-as-usual lawmakers in the Sept. 13 primary.
By The Editorial Board
Beyond the chance to shake things up in Washington, this fall’s elections present voters with an opportunity to support reformers around the country who are out to change the political climate from the ground up.
In New York’s Democratic primary on Thursday, Sept. 13, strong, new candidates, unafraid to challenge the old guard, are tapping into voters’ anger at rogue Democrats who let Republicans keep control of the State Senate.
Over seven years, eight senators elected as Democrats gave their support to Republican leadership in return for committee assignments or other perks. They called themselves the Independent Democratic Conference, or I.D.C. Their self-serving acquiescence to Republican control of the Senate ensured inaction on election and criminal justice reforms, an overhaul of rent laws and a funding stream for the New York City subways.
Many of the challengers have said Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who for years did little to bring the wayward Democrats into the fold, has been an obstacle to genuine progress. Electing them, particularly if Democrats can win full control of both houses of the Legislature in November, would help focus the next governor — whoever that is — on the kind of actions New York needs.
It will not be easy to dislodge these incumbents, all of whom have scurried back to the Democratic Party, given their backing from reliable union and corporate supporters. That the primary elections are on a Thursday, not a Tuesday, will probably also benefit incumbents by keeping turnout low.
But the challengers in these State Senate races make a particularly strong case for ousting the powers that be on Sept. 13:
District 34, Bronx and Westchester County: The most important of the primary challenges is also one of the toughest. Undeterred, Alessandra Biaggi, a young lawyer and activist for women’s rights, has been working to take this district from Senator Jeffrey Klein, the leader of the I.D.C. and one of Albany’s craftiest politicians.
Mr. Klein and his group have plenty of money from the real estate industry and corporations. Ms. Biaggi, who has raised more than $260,000 in smaller donations, is working voter by voter to promote affordable housing and voting and ethics reforms. A campaign official for Hillary Clinton in 2016, she worked in Mr. Cuomo’s office until this year, most recently trying (and failing, in part, because of the perverse power-sharing arrangement in the State Senate) to get the Legislature to affirm the protections of Roe v. Wade in state law.
Alessandra Biaggi, who describes herself pointedly as “a real Democrat,” is the kind of smart, dedicated reformer so desperately needed in Albany. s the kind of smart, dedicated reformer so desperately needed in Albany.
District 13, Queens: Mayor Bill de Blasio endorsed Jessica Ramos, his former chief Latina spokeswoman, as “a tireless advocate for her community and a progressive champion for working families.” We agree.
As a skilled organizer, especially helping those with housing or immigration issues, Ms. Ramos easily outshines her opponent, Senator Jose Peralta. Mr. Peralta has been in the Legislature for nearly 16 years and was a member of Mr. Klein’s breakaway cabal. He has said he joined the Republican caucus to get more money for immigrants and schools in the district. Ms. Ramos will fight directly for Democratic causes like women’s rights and affordable housing in the city, not beg for leftovers from Republicans.

District 20, Brooklyn:
Zellnor Myrie, who is challenging Senator Jesse Hamilton, grew up in this district, encouraged by a hard-working single mother from Costa Rica. After graduating from Fordham University and Cornell Law School, Mr. Myrie helped New York’s City Council write a tenants’ bill of rights, then earned a place at one of the country’s top law firms, where he clocked 600 pro bono hours in a year. Mr. Myrie, often called “Z,” wants criminal justice reform, more money for schools in the district and better protections for immigrants. But his top priority is housing — affordable housing and more security to tenants on the edge of losing their homes. Mr. Hamilton, who joined the I.D.C. in 2016, has argued that he got more money for the district, and we have endorsed him in the past. But Mr. Myrie is the far more dynamic and passionate Democrat and the one this district needs.
This is a year to support those who can demonstrate their independence from Senate Republicans and demand more from the governor.

I just finished writing postcards for the NY state primary. Myrie and May were the candidates I wrote for. I'd vote for both of them if I lived in NY.
New York voters, you need to turn your legislatures true blue so there is a safe oasis to flee to if necessary. Those of us stuck in red state hell feel safer if we know there is a true blue state we can refugee to if it comes to that.
Yes, we are working to get our sixth level of hell to only the second level of hell but it's an uphill battle. We're looking up to you.

I don't get to choose who to write for, r86, or I would. I like teachout and I think she will rain hell upon the scumbags which is what the country needs.
I'm just infantry in this battle, writing when I'm called upon and when I can. Usually postcards doesn't endorse one democrat over another - we usually just write to GOTV for the democrat in a special or general election.
But the situation in NY state has become so messed up that we started writing for true blue democrats in the September primary. This is unusual.
If you'd like to join the postcard writing campaign, you can go here:

Ruh Roh, Chris Christie in trouble:
[quote]The U.S. is investigating whether a fugitive Malaysian financier laundered tens of millions of dollars and used the money to pay a legal team that included former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and a lawyer who represents President Trump, The Wall Street Journal reports. Court filings say businessman Jho Low is alleged to have played a key role in the alleged embezzlement of $4.5 billion from a Malaysian fund known as 1Malaysia Development Bhd. The team of lawyers and consultants working for Low included Christie, lobbyist Ed Rogers, Trump’s longtime lawyer Marc Kasowitz, Trump Organization lawyer Bobby Burchfield, and vice chairman of the Trump campaign’s joint fund with the Republican Party Elliott Broidy. There is reportedly no indication that people who received payments from Low were aware the funds could have originated from laundered money; actor Leonardo DiCaprio was previously roped into the sprawling scandal, and forced to return funds tied to the scam. The Justice Department is investigating Low’s potential use of two intermediaries to facilitate the payments through the international financial system. Low has previously denied wrongdoing.

He's the one who is protecting Kavanaugh's papers. I'm still looking for where I read this earlier this morning, but supposedly McGahn is going to join Trump's re-election committee. That's where they send everyone Trump fires so they can collect their $15,000 per month hush money.

People also seem to overlook the fact that as a former President, Bill Clinton and Hillary don't have the same kind of IT set up you or I might have in our homes. Bill still gets National Security briefings, and his home server and the IT capabilities are a lot more up to date, state of the art servers, etc.

As I think about it, and sit here completely appalled by the lack of concern and the cowardice, and convinced of the depth of the corruption running through the Republican Party, a few things come to mind. First I don't believe for a minute that is simple fear of the Trump base that paralyzes the GOP. I believe that the corruption is even deeper than we can imagine. Blackmail, pay offs, etc. I also believe that at least several are long time assets of the Russians.
But the political analysts, the number crunchers and forecasters, they had to know that the Republican Party, if it continued down the path it set for itself years ago, with Reagan, was going to shrink itself into a corner and not have wide appeal. They had to know that their ever shrinking base could never win a national election without suppression, gerrymandering, and fraud. My point is, they have been doing it anyway. So they don't give a fuck. I believe that the entire party is a criminal enterprise that has set out to deliberately defraud the American People in national elections for years.

R134 Dotard must be confused, but then again he never really cares much for reality. As I recall, the GOP partisans were upset Hillary deleted personal emails off her own server, so they concocted a conspiracy theory/fantasy that Hillary must have deleted incriminating emails to hide her nefarious plans. Didn't Dotard himself encourage the Russians to go "find" those deleted emails?

According to the WaPo Trump is completely unprepared for the anticipated Democratic take over of the House. He keeps insisting they will not take the House. Now that's either magical thinking, denying reality, or that's because he knows the fix is in. But his staffers and all the internal analysts believe a Democratic take over is inevitable. They are watching the numbers.
The main point of the article is that Trump is totally unprepared for them. He has no staff to address any of the legal issues his office will face and his personal legal team is completely inadequate to deal with his personal liability. They believe that before they ever get to impeachment, it's going to be one investigation after another for all the crap the Trumpanistas have been doing. There will be committees of Congress investigating every hair on their asses. FINALLY.
McGahn's departure, and the loss of his core staffers who have been jumping ship for months, is a real blow. They said if Trump doesn't find someone good to take the reigns of the Special Counsel's office he is fucked. He sits there complaining because everyone, Jared, and others, everyone has better tougher smarter lawyers with more experience, than his team. He doesn't understand why. maybe because he doesn't listen to legal advance, tweets too much, and is an impossible client...who doesn't pay his bills?

The saddest thing of all is that there seems to be not one patriot among the GOP members of Congress. Yes, McCain openly opposed Trump, but he mostly voted with his Republican colleagues when it counted. Yet, McCain is the only one who challenged Trump and who tried to get McConnell to do the right thing. I believe if McCain had been well and strong he would have tried to build an insurgency but they would have isolated him. Yes, we have widespread "retirements" and not only because they couldn't win in their districts. A lot of them can't stomach what's happening, but they refuse to speak out or and here's the difficult part, they refuse to oppose them. Corker and Flake are perfect examples. There are a few others. Criticize the way Ryan and McConnell run the show, criticize Trump who they can hardly hide their disgust with him, and yet, every time they have to vote, even though they're leaving, they vote with the bastards. it's mystifying.

r136 All of this is why if Democrats ever get control of both houses and the White House again we need to abolish the Electoral College. It's the only way Republicans keep getting control of everything. They lose the popular vote in the Presidential race, Democrats get more votes over-all for Congress....and we still remain a minority because of the EC and gerrymandering.

Of course he did, Trump is pushing through standard-issue Republican policies aimed at enabling the 1% to loot government coffers, subjugate workers, marginalize the disadvantaged and destroy the environment. by Anonymous | reply 146 | August 30, 2018 1:20 PM |
R144, the Democrats need more than Congress to abolish the Electoral College (and the White House isn't relevant). It would take a constitutional amendment, so they need both houses of Congress and a three-quarters majority of state legislatures. They'll need many cycles to get the latter, thanks to the Democrats' relative neglect of local and state races in favor of higher-profile national ones. There are plenty of blue-leaning people in the medium and large-sized towns in red country (as many pointed out after the 2016 election, looking at electoral maps district by district); with more local funding we could turn a lot of those areas purple or even blue, but it'll take time and money.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | August 30, 2018 1:35 PM |

R147 is right, and I'm no conspiracy theorist, but we really need to smarten up and get very active in ur states. Republican control of state legislatures and governors is around 30 states. They only need 8 more to control the Constitutional amendment process and they have a shopping list of things they want to change. It is very scary. Some of them, supported by the Kochs, want a Constitutional Convention to "up date and revise" our "out of date" Constitution. When these Fascists start fucking with the Constitution we are fucked. So make sure you get local when you are out here. We need every Democratic candidate we can find, and we need to vote the GOP out. The party has been taken over by extremists and the real money power behind those extremists is determined to set up their corporate police state. This is no joke.

No. it would be, "Pocahontas, Pocahontas" all day long. Trump would continually, endlessly accuse her of being a liar and grifter and the networks would give his claims endless, breathless coverage, as if someone sane with credibility was saying it.
I hope she doesn't. This next election is a white man's election. No woman has a chance in hell, too many misogynists out there would love to attack her as a distraction to Trump's problems.

by Anonymous | reply 171 | August 30, 2018 8:50 PM |
Personally I doubt that it would be an issue if the Democratic candidate is a woman or a member of a minority group.
- Anyone's better than Trump
- the general public would turn on the media outlet the moment they reveal themselves to be biased against the Democratic candidate
- the general public is not going to go for the GOP's usual, high almighty rethoric, because their recent actions (siding with Trump) is not making them very popular these days. And I doubt that is forgotten when the presidential election is taking place and Trump's mess is still in everybodies' minds.
- Millennials, more social media savy, will not fall for Russian bots and alt-right, and ignore the Bernie bots to vote more strategically (as in for the Democratic Party).

A conversation with a person who went from a Repug to Democrat:
A friend of mine called me to say he had dinner with his friend who had turned from a rabid Repug to a Democrat. This friend had turned a few years ago. He called to tell me why. He hadn't spoken to this friend in quite awhile. What he said was this- he used to be a true blue capitalist. He was raised to hate any interference into the free market even when the free market fucked something up. He said he came to realize the Dems had figured out the right formula for the economy. That formula was a mix of capitalism/socialism such as SS and Medicare. He knew the Dems were far superior to conservatives on the economy because they were not tied to dogma. They did what was necessary to achieve strong growth with a safety net and regulations. He thought this was unfair and clung to his dogma. He said he always thought they had to beat the Dems in other ways and cheat, lie and steal if need be because, darn it, the Dems just had no principles. They would fix any flaw in the capitalist system. How could conservatives compete with that? He said once he let go of the conservative dogma, he had this crazy awakening and said it was like a huge mountain was lifted from his shoulders. He said it was the 2007-08 crisis that started his awakening. He said it is so obvious liberal economic philosophy works and conservative economic philosophy doesn't and never has.

Brilliant advisors, policy wonks, cabinet secretaries and etc. have the attributes you list but many of them don't wear well on television every day for years on end. Among other things, President of the United States is a six to ten year contract as an international tv star. Charisma is a necessary component of modern politics and not just modern, it's always been that way (see Julius Caesar).
Happily, it's not an either/or proposition, look at President Obama.

Her father. For one thing, if the situation was put on her husband---choose dad or wife--Jared would choose his dad in a heart beat. I'm sure Ivanka knows this. I think the only way Ivanka would sell out her dad is if she truly believed his ship was sinking with no hope. donald has circumvented the law and bounced back so many times since she was a kid it would take more than what is going on now for her to lose faith in him. That's how I see it anyway.

There are two problems with Warren. One of them is never discussed, which is she was a REPUBLICAN until fairly recently. Her personal interest was in the Republicans passing laws to allow risky or preferential banking practices, which she was against. Great. But finance is her personal interest and that’s why that particular issue concerned her. That doesn’t make her liberal on every issue. In reality she’s more of a centrist Republican who has interests in common with Democrats on some issues.
Secondly, she reminds straight men of their nagging bitch of a wife or mother who complains in her nagging, whiny, bitchy voice when they want to sit on the couch all day in a dirty undershirt watching football. When she bitches about it, they scratch their balls in front of her just to piss her off, while she huffs impotently. That’s Warren’s high pitched, whiny voice and spinster aunt demeanor to straight men in a nutshell.
Are they voting for somebody like that? Hell no. Rush Limbaugh invented the word “Feminazi” to describe women like Warren. Put a sexy, empty headed slut like Sarah Palin up there and she might have a chance. Not schoolmarm Warren.

R219, I didn't find Obama overly charismatic. He was professorial and kind of a nerd, in the best sense. He was polite, kind, professional, and had a great smile. And, he was all of the things I listed above while I was "virtue signaling".
And, I'm so sick of people using the term 'virtue signaling' all over the place. Stop just going with the group think on everything, including the latest term that everyone has jumped on. It makes you sound stupid. Just because television wants to sell us 'charisma' because it makes their ratings higher doesn't mean we should all just go along with it. Or, at least go along with their definition of charisma which, if you haven't noticed, currently happens to be Trumps and Kardashians.

Additionally, if you were unable to see President Obama's obvious and blinding charisma, then perhaps you simply don't see much charisma in men at all. Are you a lesbian? Before you start whining again, yes, some lesbians see tons of charisma in President Obama.
by Anonymous | reply 226 | August 31, 2018 4:12 AM |
Trump does have one superpower, and he used it to great advantage in the last election. That is the power to belittle, demean, lie about ridicule and humiliate someone until they become irrelevant. That’s how he got through a very large field of much more qualified candidates and won the election.
From “Little Marco” to “Lyin’ Ted” and “Low Energy Jeb” Bush, he knocked down one candidate after another. Hillary Clinton will be known as “Crooked Hillary” for the rest of her life in some quarters and I am sure some Trumpsters will repeat it on the day of her funeral.
Trump has one talent: destroying other people. That’s why I think somebody like Michael Avenatti night actually have a snowball’s chance in hell.
Rank and file Democrats are sick and tired of being the nice nerds that get sand kicked in their face by the bully. If the party won’t furnish us with a fighting candidate, people may vote with their checkbook for someone who’s a fighter.
Who can hold their own in a Presidential debate when Trump dodges every serious question and name calls his opponent? Who will fight back and slam Trump right back? Who’s not afraid to use Trump’s own dirt against him? That’s who the nominee should be. Not a scaredy cat or a “when they go low, we go high” type.

About Warren, it’s well known she was a registered Republican at one time. Google is your friend. This is dated 2011:
Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of the left, admitted that she was once a Republican.
In an interview with The Daily Beast released on Tuesday, Warren, 62, who recently began a bid to unseat Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) admitted that up into her early 40s she was a Republican.
"I was a Republican because I thought that those were the people who best supported markets. I think that is not true anymore," Warren said. "I was a Republican at a time when I felt like there was a problem that the markets were under a lot more strain. It worried me whether or not the government played too activist a role."

I have no problem with people who change parties. For some it means they thought deeply and admitted they had changed their minds.

Ivanka would most certainly throw her father under the bus and then claim it's all to save her little kids from growing up without her mother (because for any woman it's undignified to do something out of self interest - that's only ok and understandable for men). I think she would have dumped Jared by now after finding out that he isn't as wealthy as he made everybody else believe he would be and in some serious debt (because of that 666 building).

So Donnie Jr. is proposing that some Conservative billionaire in Silicon Valley invent a Conservative version of Facebook and Twitter to "take on" the existing social networks. The Response from Dorsey (Twitter) and Zuckerberg ( Facebook) was pure delight. They said PLEASE do it. They'd love it if all the jerks had their own playpen.
Anyway, some analysis indicates that even if they tried that they could never make it work, because there are not enough supporters to sustain it! That IMO was the key. NOT ENOUGH SUPPORTERS!!!!! The article went on to mention that on any given night, Sean Hannity, the most successful Op/Ed guy on Fox, only attracts 3 million viewers. And I saw data somewhere else that Maddow beats Hannity on a regular basis. It just made me feel hopeful so I wanted to share.

The problem is that the media needs some sort of justification that they spend so much time covering "the other side" even when it's just a fringe group. That's why you get these shifty polls of how much Deplorables there are and how much support Donald Trump still has amongst Republicans. Otherwise the public would go: Why does the media waste so much time on these losers? Is that supposed to be news? The media misleads in order to keep having an audience they can mislead / manipulate further.

Sorry about the post above, the thread hadn’t loaded and I was just offering commentary to keep it alive. I don’t mean to change the topic back to millennial voters, Bernie, or bots, especially when there could be some Mueller action today. Friday is the most common day. Sorry, but to me the whole "us vs. stupid Millennials" is just a typical "Divide & Conquer" ploy from the GOP / alt-right / Russian Bots making it look like "Liberals" are dismissing Millenals and therefore Millennials either should sit elections out or join the Deplorables (out of spite).

[quote] [R144], the Democrats need more than Congress to abolish the Electoral College (and the White House isn't relevant). It would take a constitutional amendment
If it hasn’t already been mentioned, there is a remedy short of a constitutional amendment. Individual states can pass laws stating that their delegates to the electoral college must vote for whomever wins the national plurality of the votes. So, in the last election, a solid red state like Wyoming would have gone for Hillary. Actually, all states would have gone for Hillary.
This law has actually been passed in a number of states. It includes a tripwire stating that it only comes into effect after some number of states representing X number of electors all pass the same law.
If this ever takes effect, I hope the states will then follow through with a constitutional amendment to tidy-up. In the meantime, they should pass an amendment limiting corporate donations to campaigns, and personhood. That really needs to change. I don’t hear the Dems, or anyone, really, working on this.

It is BS. Presumably none of the people he may indict -- Stone, Junior Mint, etc. are running for any office.
Moreover, the prohibition is against timing an indictment or an announcement to influence the outcome of an election. If Rudy and tRump want the investigation "wrapped up" as soon as possible, then Mueller (with the approval of Rosenstein) can't possibly wait until November if they are ready to indict now.

THE ART OF THE DEAL: The Toronto Star has obtained inflammatory secret comments about Canada that Trump made "off the record" yesterday, and they have upended the talks this morning.
In remarks Trump wanted to be “off the record,” Trump told Bloomberg News reporters on Thursday, according to a source, that he is not making any compromises at all in the talks with Canada — but that he cannot say this publicly because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.”
“Here’s the problem. If I say no — the answer’s no. If I say no, then you’re going to put that, and it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal ... I can’t kill these people,” he said of the Canadian government.
In another remark he did not want published, Trump said, according to the source, that the possible deal with Canada would be “totally on our terms.” He suggested he was scaring the Canadians into submission by repeatedly threatening to impose tariffs.
Trudeau’s team believed the remarks to be accurate, and it saw them as confirmation of its suspicions that Trump’s team has not been truly planning to compromise. So at the outset of the Friday meeting Trudeau’s officials unveiled the quotes to their U.S. counterparts.
The Star's Daniel Dale says the comments "have upended the talks this morning."

AP: A senior Justice Department lawyer says a former British spy told him at a breakfast meeting two years ago that Russian intelligence believed it had Donald Trump “over a barrel,” according to multiple people familiar with the encounter.
The lawyer, Bruce Ohr, also says he learned that a Trump campaign aide had met with higher-level Russian officials than the aide had acknowledged, the people said.
The previously unreported details of the July 30, 2016, breakfast with Christopher Steele, which Ohr described to lawmakers this week in a private interview, reveal an exchange of potentially explosive information about Trump between two men the president has relentlessly sought to discredit.

The article said that he "agreed to cooperate with U.S. prosecutors as part of a guilty plea for failing to register in the U.S. as a foreign agent for his work lobbying on behalf of a Ukrainian political party." That charge isn't directly related to tRump and Russia, but he may have helpful information. If he didn't, the prosecutors would not have been interested in him cooperating. Unless you have useful information, there's no need for your "cooperation."

I think Mueller is tightening the noose to make sure everything comes out no matter what Trump tries to do to suppress the investigation or its findings, but farming out aspects of it to other courts. All of these ancillary cases are connected. So Manafort is part of a web of conspiracy not acting alone out of mere greed. That's important to expose. Because by doing it this way Mueller is nailing Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump to the fucking floor.

Poll: 60 percent disapprove of Trump, while clear majorities back Mueller and Sessions
By Philip Rucker and Scott Clement
August 31 at 7:00 AM President Trump’s disapproval rating has hit a high point of 60 percent, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll that also finds that clear majorities of Americans support the special counsel’s Russia investigation and say the president should not fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
At the dawn of the fall campaign sprint to the midterm elections, which will determine whether Democrats retake control of Congress, the poll finds a majority of the public has turned against Trump and is on guard against his efforts to influence the Justice Department and special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s wide-ranging probe.
Nearly half of Americans, 49 percent, say Congress should begin impeachment proceedings that could lead to Trump being removed from office, while 46 percent say Congress should not.
And a narrow majority — 53 percent — say they think Trump has tried to interfere with Mueller’s investigation in a way that amounts to obstruction of justice; 35 percent say they do not think the president has tried to interfere.
Overall, 60 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance, with 36 percent approving, according to the poll. Because of random sampling variation, this represents only a marginal shift from the last Post-ABC survey, in April, which measured Trump’s rating at 56 percent disapproval and 40 percent approval.
The new poll was conducted Aug. 26 to 29, in the week after former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was convicted of federal tax and bank fraud and after former Trump attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty and implicated the president in illegal payments to silence women who alleged sexual encounters with Trump.
The four-month gap between Post-ABC polls makes it difficult to attribute the modest uptick in disapproval of Trump to specific events. Other public polls have shown Trump’s disapproval rating in the low- to mid-50s and have not tracked a rise since the Manafort conviction and Cohen guilty plea.
Trump has tried to rally support for Republican candidates in the Nov. 6 elections by pointing to his economic record. This week’s poll finds that despite the president’s unpopularity with voters, he gets better ratings when it comes to the economy: 45 percent of Americans approve and 47 percent disapprove of Trump’s handling of the economy.
Trump’s overall popularity breaks down along lines of partisanship, ethnicity and gender, according to the poll. While 78 percent of Republicans approve of his performance, 93 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of independents disapprove. More men support him than women, and while 45 percent of whites back him, 19 percent of nonwhites approve.
The poll finds that there are clear limitations to Trump’s efforts all summer to politicize and discredit the Russia investigation. The president has fired a near-daily barrage of tweets labeling the probe a “witch hunt” and attacking the credibility of Mueller and several current and former Justice Department officials.
But 63 percent of Americans support Mueller’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, with 52 percent saying they support it strongly; 29 percent oppose the probe.
Opinions on Mueller’s work also break down on partisan lines, with 61 percent of Republicans opposing the probe but an even larger 85 percent of Democrats expressing support. Among independents, however, a two-thirds majority of 67 percent back the investigation.
Trump has complained that Manafort was treated unfairly by Mueller’s prosecutors, and after a jury convicted Manafort earlier this month the president tweeted that he felt “very badly” for him.
But 67 percent of Americans think Mueller’s case against Manafort was justified, while 17 percent say it was unjustified, according to the poll.
...
by Anonymous | reply 311 | August 31, 2018 7:29 PM |
...
Trump’s praise of Manafort has stirred speculation that he might pardon his former campaign chairman, but the poll finds that it would be a political land mine for the president. Two-thirds of Americans oppose Trump pardoning Manafort — 53 percent strongly oppose it — and 18 percent support a pardon.
Trump has ratcheted up his public attacks on Sessions in recent weeks and has consulted his personal attorneys and other advisers about firing the attorney general, whom he has viewed as insufficiently loyal after Sessions recused himself last year from overseeing the Russia investigation because of a conflict of interest.
But the public is squarely behind Sessions. Sixty-four percent of Americans do not think Trump should fire Sessions, with 19 percent saying he should and 17 percent saying they have no opinion. Nearly half of Republicans, 47 percent, say Trump should not fire the attorney general, with 31 percent saying he should.
Just under a quarter of Americans, 23 percent, say they agree with Trump’s criticisms of Sessions for allowing the Mueller investigation to proceed, while 62 percent say they side with Sessions, who has said he is following the law.
Two-thirds of Americans say they had read or heard at least some of the news about Cohen’s guilty plea to eight violations of banking, tax and campaign finance laws, though less than a quarter heard “a great deal” about the news.
Cohen told a federal judge last week that before the 2016 campaign, then-candidate Trump directed him to pay off two women to keep their stories of alleged affairs with Trump from becoming public.
The poll finds that 61 percent of Americans think that Trump committed a crime if he did direct Cohen to make the payments, while 31 percent say he did not commit a crime.
Democrats are hoping to retake control of one or both houses of Congress in November’s elections. If they do, party leaders will face pressure from their energized base to use congressional oversight committees to investigate potential misconduct by the president and his administration, as well as perhaps begin impeachment proceedings.
The survey finds a clear partisan divide on the issue. While 75 percent of Democrats say Congress should begin impeachment hearings, 82 percent of Republicans say lawmakers should not. Among independents, 49 percent support impeachment while 46 percent oppose it.
The Post-ABC poll was conducted among a random national sample of 1,003 adults reached on conventional and cellphones; the margin of sampling error for overall results is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

There will be incontrovertible evidence that Trump is a traitor and a man who will throw anyone under a bus, he has no loyalty to anyone. Once all of the chickens come home to roost and he is completely isolated, he will become ill, and resign. (After making a deal with Mueller.) Some rich female anti-Semite who's involved in politics. There could certainly be more than one such, but Rebekah Mercer is a far right-winger who bankrolled Bannon (as well as Trump), so the shoe fits.
by Anonymous | reply 355 | September 1, 2018 1:58 AM |
Also Google Margot Sheehan Burns. Not wealthy but has a respectable career in new media. Uses several variants on her real name online. Even though she's been outed before by an antifa website, she seems to think she flies under the radar while hobnobbing with folks like Richard Spencer and writing essays for Counter-Currents, an "intellectual" fascist publishing outfit. She'd probably be blacklisted in NYC if her name got out on a large scale.
by Anonymous | reply 356 | September 1, 2018 2:14 AM |
Then again, would Rebekah Mercer take a gamble on funding open Nazis and KKK people, using an online name that openly mocks the Holocaust, knowing that if her identity got out it would blow up on her, her father, and all their protegés?
Or is she type who likes to (*tosses hair, licks lips*) take risks?
by Anonymous | reply 357 | September 1, 2018 2:16 AM |
Rebekah is too crafty to risk that. Behind the scenes her ideology is so hardline that even trump people think she is nuts. But she presents herself as rational and an example of the compassionate conservative to the public at large. She and her father are completely batshit.

We really need to tighten up our laws. All political campaigns ought to be publicly funded, the campaign season ought to not last longer than six months from start to finish. Every single candidate would have gone through a vetting process and published ten years worth of income tax returns.

I believe things a re definitely coming to a head. Trump is increasingly combative, he's getting more extreme in his behavior and his accusations, he is doing stupid dangerous things that will affect our economy, and picking trade fights with Canada and China is beyond stupid. Really dangerous too. When our European allies announce that they can no longer rely on us for security interests that is an extremely serious thing. I am waiting for Trump to provoke an incident or create one to distract us.
When the only people he listens to are Steve Miller, Bannon, Sean Hannity, Rudy, Roger Stone, and Alex Jones he is nothing but a conspiracy theorist who has no business making policy and having access to our military and national security apparatus. He picked fights with the Kochs , then suddenly everything went quiet. You know very well the Kochs control Congress and they aren't going to give that up. All their talk about supporting Democrats is bullshit. But we've been through it before. We have always had rich people with eccentric views trying to buy their way into politics, ever since the beginning of the industrial age.
Trump is in panic mode because of the way Mueller is setting him up and there's nothing he can do about it. With every batch of fresh indictments and guilty pleas Mueller is signaling Trump about what Mueller knows. I have to wonder if Jared and Donnie Jr. recognize that if Mueller has Person X he must know about all the things that connect the Trumpers to the Russia conspiracy. They have committed treason.
Trump himself knows he is getting bad advice but he can't get better lawyers to work for him. We have to really look at him based on what he has shown us and what we know about him. Trump never willingly accepts defeat. He fights back. And yet he has made deals to cut his losses. Look at Trump university as an example. He will do as much dirt as he can until there is real push back. he gets sued. Once he bumps up against the legal system, and there is no one left to bribe , coerce, or threaten, once his lawyers tell him there is no way out, he makes a deal. Pays a fine and walks away. So I think Mueller believes there has to be a way to get to him. Mueller is building a cage around him.
Trump's instinct is to never admit he is wrong, never appear to give in, bully and throw tantrums until he can go no further, then he makes the deal. So we have a very dangerous period to live through with him. That Lame Duck session between Election Day and January 3rd is going to be harrowing to say the least. Actually it has already started. He will do whatever he can get away with to stop the Democrats. he sees his path to survival in stopping the Dems from taking the House He will do Anything. If we don't do our jobs we are fucked forever.

by Anonymous | reply 374 | September 1, 2018 6:42 PM |
Trump has become Hannity's puppet. It goes straight from Sean Hannity's mouth to Trump's twitter feed. Trump didn't even know who Bruce Ohr was before Hannity started reporting his own fabricated conspiracy theories. It was Hannity who started trashing Ohr and doing character assassination, then Trump followed suit. Hannity is the Mayor of Munchkinville to the Deplorables. He tells them NYT , WAPO, and CNN are all lying, fake news, not to believe their stories and ONLY believe only what he says. Again, it's where Trump got it. So the Deplorables don't even read or watch any other news outlets. They stay within their bubble - and Hannity's influence. Yes, Trump needs to go, but it's equally important to get rid of Hannity as well, (and his ilk at FOX), otherwise another Trump will just pop up in his place.

NO, sometimes the way it works is Trump has Hannity start the drumbeat and the he appears to take it up. HAnnity likesthis arrangement because occasionally he gets credit for "breaking" news and Trump then follows up with an investigation or wild accusations. The attacks are definitely coordinated. Usually Hannity is consulted when Trump is trying to get ahead of bad news. Hannity advises him and is a resource on the latest wild conspiracy theories. But the Ohr story came ut of Trump and Pompeo, and other then Hannity appeared to break the story.

You know, featuring Trump every single day, video clips from his latest outrageous pronouncements , etc can desensitize people. Eventually a mental fatigue sets in and people begin to accept the unacceptable as commonplace. I have begun rationing my TV news intake. I'm still getting my news via twitter feeds. So I get the general headlines, and now and then I'll read an article, but the nightly obsession of three or four hours a night of cable news is over. I just cannot do it. Now I limit myself to three hours a week, if that. I never want to "get used to " Trump and I refuse to consider him POTUS. He is illegitimately occupying this WH. Hopefully he'll be gone soon.

This Patten/ Manafort thing is a lot bigger than it looks, especially focusing on the huge "slush" fund Trump created with his inaugural committee. Metaphorically it seems as if Mueller has planted a sea of icebergs for Trump's bloated ship of state and they're going to rip out his guts and sink him.
I was amused at the discussion on MSNBC a few days ago about how lean his staff is. Trump has not fully staffed his White House and either it's paranoia on his part because he needs to control everything, or he can't find people who want to work there. I think it may be both. He probably has recommendations from people in Congress, but the ones who are recommended say, "No thanks."

So many stories come out, seem to be huge in their importance, and then are conveniently forgotten once another bombshell takes it's place. It's very important we keep track of some of these stories and don't allow them to fall by the wayside.
For example, the story about evidence strongly suggesting that the Russian Oligarchs financed many Republican campaigns, (including Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and maybe Lindsay Graham), by funneling/laundering money through the NRA. It's why so many of the Repugs are standing by Trump. They're being blackmailed as well.

Obviously most of the local and state legislators; in DC maybe Susan Collins? They probably don't trust her to stay bought any more than we trust her to be "moderate." The ones who have called it a day, like Flake and Corker? Then again some of them, e.g. Chaffetz, might have bailed partly because they knew they were guilty. This is a hard one!

The pundits are saying that Clare McCaskill in Missouri is in trouble, her race is tight. And the race between nelson and Scott in Florida is another that is tight. We cannot afford to lose any seats in the Senate. We have to keep what we have and hopefully try to pick up a couple. We may not take the Senate but we could close the gap. Mitch McConnell is walking around smug as if he isn't worried. I want to push that fucker into the mud. I want these to be his last weeks as Majority Leader. Speaking of Russia having Trump "over a barrel," I read this morning that we have a misguided idea of what is on the alleged "P" tapes Putin has on Trump. It's been rumored that the "P" does not stand for the phonetic "Pee, " but rather pedophilia. Sources say that Putin has Trump on tape f#cking girls who are under age of consent. Again, all of this is alleged, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. All Trump's "grab 'em by the pussy" crap, his lewd comments about a 12 yr old Paris Hilton and his own daughter, his purposeful walking in on pageant contestants, etc. . . He clearly has little, if any, moral ground to stand on, and IF Putin does have Trump committing pedophilia on tape, that would givethe Russians far more leverage than having taped Trump's perverted acts with prostitutes.
Sadly, I'm sure most of Trump's delightfully intelligent, morally upstanding Christian supporters would still find a way to forgive and reverie him or refuse to believe that any such evidence is factual.

I was unaware that the term "pee tapes" originated as an interpretation of an abbreviation "P tapes" (one that could be interpreted in other ways). Presumably it's just a cutesy term created because the tapes show T-Rump enjoying the sight of hookers peeing on Obama's former hotel bed.
Of course, that doesn't mean T-Rump hasn't been involved with underaged girls somehow.

Look. They seized control, however they did it. Through fraud, suppression gerrymandering, etc. Been attempting this for years. They will not give it up easily. They a re going to fight like dogs to hold what they have and keep advancing. Politics is war. They will get real dirty and this is going to be a real ugly election. So the Dems have to be prepared for that. If necessary, they have to win ugly.
R417 is absolutely correct. Don't think this is a routine election and our "blue wave" is going to triumph. Don't think that there is anything normal about this election, because there isn't. Close elections are easier to steal. Some of these ought to not be close. In a lot of cases, the GOP has attempted to choose their opponent. They have some nominees for Congress who are being touted as "too far to the Left." and of course there's the race issue too. So electability has become an issue. Ignore it. Vote for the Democrat. If the Democrat is a Cocker Spaniel vote for it! If they got a ticket for drunk driving 20 years ago vote for the Democrat.
Be prepared for lies, smearing, mudslinging, false accusations, even acts of violence. And definitely be prepared for an "October surprise" Remember. There is no Republican drawing breath that is in a position to accuse any Democrat of corruption or anything else really. So it they want to start some shit, be ready to do it to them first. I repeat: Be ready to do it to them first. The Republicans should never gain the advantage by choosing the subject or setting the terms of the discussion or of addressing issues.
Our opposition research has to be absolutely thorough and well timed. These people aren't that smart. They are arrogant and they live in a bubble. So it shouldn't be that difficult to expose them. Our ads have to be punchy, memorable, hard hitting and humorous where appropriate. Don't forget humor in this race. It's important to win your audience and get them energized, not always with fear, we have enough fear for 100 elections. But humor.
And we must make sure our people are registered and get out to vote. They are "purging" voting rolls. You may think you'e registered, but you better check and keep checking. Bring all kinds of ID with you. Know the rules. Keep track of the polling places. Sometimes they will change a voting location at the last minute. Be ready. Don't be surprised by anything they do. We can argue with them later, but on election day deal with the real world situation and VOTE!! Get other people out too. If anyone is unsure of their availability on election day, then find out what the rules are for voting absentee, or for early voting. We have to show them that all these marches we've had over the past two years were just a preview. Most of all, remember:All politics is local. Do not forget to vote for your state court judges, your state legislatures and your governors. We really need to flip the state houses too. It's critical.

Speaking style---inflection, volume changes, tone, allusions, vocabulary, directness, humor---play a great part in the making of a political leader, not merely a politician.
No current female politician has "it." Obama and Bill Clinton still have it, but Hillary never did. Joe Biden is comfortably avuncular, but not cut-throat enough. JoeK3 will probably grow into a leader, but he needs some elocution, or perhaps hortatory, lessons.
You know who has the requisite articulateness, forthrightness, intelligence, projected strength, and charisma? Yes, you do know. Michael Avenatti.

Team Sanders bullshit. A 4-million-strong “secret” Facebook Group (Pantsuit Nation) said otherwise. Women of all races, along with black people of both genders and gay men, were plenty excited. My sister dressed up her toddler son and daughter in pantsuits to go vote, and I wore suffragette white myself. Women were plenty excited but this didn’t fit the Sanders fake-left progressive narrative because she wasn’t a MAN. Fuck that. I was excited and remain heartbroken that the election was literally stolen from her, and from us, we the people.

I like Hillary and think she's more than capable, but she doesn't have "it." Her speeches look rehearsed to within an inch of their life, and she still doesn't come off natural. Remember when she was trying to laugh more during interviews in the 2008 primaries? Awkward! There's just something about her that doesn't translate. Obama makes it looks effortless.

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s daughter has filed to officially change her last name, apparently to distance herself from her father in the wake of his criminal conviction. Jessica Manafort, 36, reportedly filed the paperwork in Manhattan Supreme Court late Friday. “I would like my new name to be Jessica Anne Bond, in place of my present name,” Manafort said in the legal filing, according to the New York Post. She reportedly chose Bond, her mother’s maiden name, because it “more closely suits [her] profession.” She told the Post she’d decided on the name change “to separate myself and my work from a public perception that has nothing to do with the person that I am.” Her father was found guilty last month of eight counts of tax fraud and bank fraud, and he faces a second trial in Washington, D.C. later this month.

Rudy's latest claim is that the President will have a legitimate right to claim executive privilege and stop the Mueller report from getting published. I don't think they can get away with that. The reason I don't is because all the stuff in that report, or much of it will already be spelled out by media reports or by the very specific charges in the indictments. Personally I think two things have sent Trump over the edge: Cohen's raid the charges against him and his guilty pleas. That's one package. And the specificity of the charges against the 12 GRU agents is the other. Because by Mueller announcing those indictments just a couple of days before Trump met with Putin it had to put a huge strain on their meeting.
The recent exposure of Ohr's work within the FBI Counter Intel program was another nail in the coffin. Because it has to cause Putin to take a second look at some of the people he thinks he can trust. If you're a Russian Oligarch, and you're close to Putin, you might be getting a little nervous thinking one of you may have been flipped. Mueller is a fucking genius hero. All the shit we wanted congress to do, all the toughness is there, in Mueller. Now if you can put aside your discussion about Hillary for a moment, can we please talk about the recent developments and what they mean and where this may be going? Because IMO Mueller has Putin in his crosshairs. I hope he has excellent security. The members of Congress who have got fat and Lazy with Russian money, and the weakened NRA must be shitting themselves. Yes, we know Donnie, Jr. Stone, Jared Ivanka may be staring at charges, but there is something else going on here with much broader implications. I'm personally hoping we start seeing some of the members of Congress and the NRA big shots start "falling off balconies."

We might all be wrong about blackmail. Think about Republicans in Congress and what these people want for America: women to have no rights over their own bodies, gays to have no rights whatsoever, no environmental protections, no regulations for business or banking, only the rich being able to afford healthcare, no protections for minorities, children in cages, only white Republicans voting, everything awful you can imagine, etc.
And these are the people we think might be doing the right thing if only they weren't being blackmailed? When have these evil bastards ever done the right thing?
Perhaps the Republicans love Trump because he hates democracy as much as they do and he's destroying it at a faster clip than they ever dreamed possible. And maybe Lindsey changed his tune after a round of golf with trump because he really, really liked all the plans trump laid out.
It's just starting to feel like assuming they're being blackmailed into being horrible is giving them too much credit.

From the CNN article: "The book opens with a dramatic scene. Former chief economic adviser Gary Cohn saw a draft letter he considered dangerous to national security on the Oval Office desk. The letter would have withdrawn the US from a critical trade agreement with South Korea. Trump's aides feared the fallout could jeopardize a top-secret national security program: the ability to detect a North Korean missile launch within just seven seconds.... Former staff secretary Rob Porter worked with Cohn and used the same tactic on multiple occasions, Woodward writes."
So who can we assume has been drafting these documents and putting them on T-Rump's desk to sign? Bannon? Miller?

Per the Washington Post, after grilling, Trump exploded, saying: “This thing’s a goddamn hoax” and “I don’t really want to testify.” Later, Trump’s former personal attorney John Dowd told the President to his face about how he’d fare in the real scenario when the President gained confidence in his abilities again. “Don’t testify. It’s either that or an orange jumpsuit,” Dowd reportedly told Trump. “I’ll be a real good witness,” Trump told Dowd, according to Woodward. “You are not a good witness,” Dowd replied. “Mr. President, I’m afraid I just can’t help you.” Dowd resigned the next morning.

a view from the trenches yesterday. I was out delivering yard signs for our local candidate for the house.
I had a list of names and addresses. This is the same sort of list you get when you canvass meaning it has the voters ages and party affiliation on them.
The first thing that struck me was the number of "undecided " that were middle aged white men. Interesting.
On my list was a 90 year old republican. I thought this had to be a joke but the office assured me that the dude had requested a sign if he was on the list. So I deliver this yard sitting the 90 year old and got into a discussion with his 82 year old republican wife.
She said she is disgusted by dump and his vulgar, childish behavior and wishes other countries would tell him "no" (I'm not sure what this was in regards to). She also said she couldn't understand why the repugs weren't doing anything to reign him in. I told her that's why it's important that we vote them all out to get a check on him. She said she didn't see any other way to stop his cray even though it wasn't something she would normally do.
So die hard lifelong repubs are turning against him and are planning to vote against him come November.

Did Bob mention Omarosa?
by Anonymous | reply 541 | September 4, 2018 6:04 PM |
thanks, r536. I feel it's the least I can do since my wonky schedule prevents me from doing canvassing or phone banking.
Her response did interest me. She seemed to be upset by the loss of civility more than anything. Like "it" is an embarrassment to the country. She also said he was trying to destroy the country. It was very interesting.
The enthusiasm was really surprising. For example, I was walking down the street in a typical middle class neighborhood carrying the yard signs and my list when this car started following me. Being in red state hell, I was ready for a fight.
The car follows me for about half a block then pulls up next to me. It's a Lexus and an older man is driving. His very well dressed wife leans over and asks where they can get one of the signs. I told her I'd give her one of mine. She was very excited and they kept thanking me for giving them one instead of telling them to call the office.
The enthusiasm on the streets is real. Even in red state hell. Independents that I spoke to are fed up. And this is a red state. Imagine what a state like Pennsylvania or Florida is feeling.

Thanks for your work, R542. What state are you in out of curiosity?

Let's try this again. Trump's lawyers are telling Mueller that Trump shouldn't have to testify because he is a pathological liar. Of course, they would never publicly admit this to the American people.
[quote]Trump’s lawyer John Dowd has likewise called his client an idiot. Somewhat more audaciously, he has argued that Trump should not have to testify to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, because the transcript would leak, and foreign leaders would see that Trump is an idiot:
[quote]Dowd then explained to Mueller and Quarles why he was trying to keep the president from testifying: “I’m not going to sit there and let him look like an idiot. And you publish that transcript, because everything leaks in Washington, and the guys overseas are going to say, ‘I told you he was an idiot. I told you he was a goddamn dumbbell. What are we dealing with this idiot for?’”
[quote]Another Trump lawyer, Jay Sekulow, tried to argue to Robert Mueller that Trump could not be asked to give an interview because he is a compulsive liar. They literally explained to Mueller how they conducted a mock interview with Trump, and he was so unable to tell the truth that they considered him mentally disqualified from testifying:
[quote]Jay Sekulow went to Mueller’s office and re-enacted the mock interview. Their goal: to argue that Trump couldn’t possibly testify because he was incapable of telling the truth.
[quote]“He just made something up. That’s his nature,” Dowd said to Mueller.
[quote]It seems somehow unfair to let somebody remain on the job as president because he’s such a compulsive liar he can't be allowed to testify under oath.

Where is our resident stat keeper?
I think this part of the thread might have been the longest we've gone without having to start a new one (minus it looks like part 4 and 5). Has it been a slow news week or are people losing interest or?
by Anonymous | reply 546 | September 4, 2018 6:28 PM |
R546, nothing explosive happened this week plus it was Labor Day weekend and a lot of people were out doing other things.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | September 4, 2018 6:31 PM |
Can Kelly possibly keep his job after this? Tillerson didn't after his "fucking moron" comment.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | September 4, 2018 6:32 PM |
Is this the picture that was removed from the OP? Let's see if it happens again.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | September 4, 2018 6:36 PM |
R547 I thought it might have to do with Labor Day but we've had other Holidays recently and threads still moved quicker. Just thought it was interesting and wondered if it had to do with trolls flaming the thread and it maybe hidden now for some people?
by Anonymous | reply 550 | September 4, 2018 6:36 PM |
Isn't Kelly saying Trump is an idiot old news? He did a whole mea culpa without ever actually saying he didn't say it, just like Tillerson did. I bet Trump fired him and Kelly just said, 'Fuck you.' and went back to work. Trump is a coward. He can't get anyone else to fire Kelly, so there he stays.

No R549 the picture was one of Orange making his anus lips.
And if people flagged it just because they didn't like the photo then they're traitors too since they'd rather limit discussion because they're offended by Cheeto's anus mouth.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | September 4, 2018 6:37 PM |
R551 speaking of his being all talk and a coward.... was there ever confirmation that security clearances were actually revoked?
by Anonymous | reply 553 | September 4, 2018 6:38 PM |
R545, what I’m getting from that is that Trump is so mentally impaired that he probably cannot manage his own affairs, much less the country’s.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | September 4, 2018 6:39 PM |
Not exactly a shocker, R554. Although maybe it is to Deplorables.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | September 4, 2018 6:47 PM |
r554 When he is prepared, reading a teleprompter, or simply repeating his memorized talking points, he sounds reasonably coherent. But when he is dealing with people who tell him "no", or when he is having a conversation without a script, his stupidity, insanity, and dementia are obvious.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | September 4, 2018 6:47 PM |
I think this is the photo that was in the OP

r557 That looks revoltingly familiar.

Cheeto wanted to kill assad after chemical weapon attack.
by Anonymous | reply 561 | September 4, 2018 7:03 PM |
A bellicose President Trump wanted to kill Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad after he launched a chemical weapons attack on civilians in April 2017, according to the new White House tell-all by Bob Woodward of the Washington Post.
The commander-in-chief called Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and issued the deadly order.
“Let’s f–king kill him! Let’s go in. Let’s kill the f–king lot of them,” Trump said, according to the book, the subject of a lengthy article in the DC paper on Tuesday.
Mattis told the president that he’d get right on it.
But after hanging up, he told a senior aide: “We’re not going to do any of that. We’re going to be much more measured.”
The president’s national security team then prepared a plan for a conventional airstrike that Trump ultimately ordered.

He really is nothing more than a deranged Toddler.
by Anonymous | reply 563 | September 4, 2018 7:05 PM |
While Woodward was writing the book, Trump refused multiple requests for an interview. After the book was completed, Trump called Woodward and said he wanted to be interviewed. What a stupid, dishonest, cowardly asshole Trump is.

R572 didn't mean to depress you but I don't think I will ever get over what happened that night.
Someone in one of the other threads described it best:
It felt like a glitch in the matrix.
It wasn't supposed to happen.

Yes, R575. Without sounding too over dramatic (too late) things have felt very dark and evil since then. I really feel like that was a moment where I could feel things turn in the universe.
