No, OP. No. Someone else already created a new thread

We’ll let the people decide. Frankly I don’t like that OP’s insinuation that their relationship is devious.

Makes it odd that you posted this in the previous thread then
I’m a gay man and I agree that the movie is inappropriate and creepy. Timothée has the underdeveloped body of a 16 year old kid.
Fine, this can be the thread for the pedo trolls and whatnot. Enjoy yourselves.

That’s called sarcasm.

16 threads? This movie isn't worth 16 replies!
by Anonymous | reply 6 | December 28, 2017 2:25 PM |
This is a fine film that’s getting rave reviews.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 28, 2017 2:32 PM |
What a pit that Arme Hammer looks 20 years older than the very young LOOKING Timothee Chalamet.
Has the director explained why he chose 2 actors who look so massively different in terms of age.
It's kind of creepy.

I'm going to stick with this thread. The other one called it "a queer masterpiece."

Was anyone here on DL when Brokeback Mountain came out? I wonder if there were so many threads about that movie back then.
In any case, I'm sure these threads will stop once the Oscars are over. Unless LG goes ahead with the dreaded sequel, that is.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | December 28, 2017 3:55 PM |
r14, I was here and there were tons of threads on BBM (and Heath and Jake), coupled with all the Toothy Tile blind items from Ted Casablanca, which had everyone speculating about Jake Gyllenhaal's sexuality. It's somewhat reminiscent to what's happening now with CMBYN, but BBM was a bigger deal culturally at the time so there was even more chatter.
I'm tired of white gay gentiles getting raves for depicting gay Jewish men as sexual predators
Aciman, Hammer, and Chalamet are all of Jewish descent.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 28, 2017 4:12 PM |
But both the characters are not.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 28, 2017 4:13 PM |
Armond Hammer just pulled the pedo card, as did Corey Feldman.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 28, 2017 4:14 PM |
In the book, both characters are Jewish and it's one of the qualities that Elio finds alluring about Oliver, just as it was depicted in the film.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | December 28, 2017 4:15 PM |
Do they have to be Italian?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 28, 2017 4:16 PM |
[italic]God's Own Country[/italic] has a higher RT score.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | December 28, 2017 4:18 PM |
Assuming availability, R21, you realize we can see both movies.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | December 28, 2017 4:19 PM |
R21 That just means a higher percentage gave it a positive review. CMBYN's average rating on RT is 8.8, GOC's is 8.2
Likewise on Metacritic CMBYN has a 93, GOC has a 86.
CMBYN is easily the more acclaimed film.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | December 28, 2017 4:21 PM |
The critics downgraded GOC for no other reason than the title, and critics have been wrong before.
At least one of them has two men in it instead of a man and a boy.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 28, 2017 4:26 PM |
GOC has only one bad review. CMBYN has seven.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | December 28, 2017 4:27 PM |
CMBYN has 204 reviews currently and GOC has 97, not a fair comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 28, 2017 4:29 PM |
6 more negative reviews and yet still a higher average rating!
I'm sure the producers of CMBYN will are crying about those 7 bad reviews whilst their film continues to get all of the buzz that GOC doesn't.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | December 28, 2017 4:29 PM |
GOC is still a better film because it doesn't try to rationalize pederasty.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 28, 2017 4:31 PM |
More buzz doesn't equal a better film.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 28, 2017 4:32 PM |
It does when the reviews back it up.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 28, 2017 4:33 PM |
Critics are sheep and Armie Hammer is a Polanski defender.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 28, 2017 4:34 PM |
Saying "but critics liked it" proves nothing except how easily some people can be swayed by peer pressure:
by Anonymous | reply 32 | December 28, 2017 4:36 PM |
Maybe we'd know some unfortunate things about the stars of GOC if anyone knew or cared who they were.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 28, 2017 4:36 PM |
Not my fault you're too lazy to take the effort to find that out, R33.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 28, 2017 4:36 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 38 | December 28, 2017 4:41 PM |
I too wish the actors appeared closer in age but it’s still a good movie nonetheless.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 28, 2017 4:45 PM |
The film plays with the idea of ethnic and class assimilation by pointlessly bringing up Elio’s envy of Oliver’s WASP-appearing Jewishness
What movie did White see? (see link at R18)
In the one I saw, Elio is envious of the fact that Oliver is not embarrassed about being Jewish (he wear the Star of David necklace) versus Elio's parents "Jews of discretion".
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 28, 2017 4:45 PM |
It is not a good movie if it believes pederasty is normal. Do you believe a 17-year-old is a consenting adult, R39?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 28, 2017 4:46 PM |
Don't be disingenuous, R40. He saw the same movie everyone else saw.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | December 28, 2017 4:46 PM |
I just saw the movie. And, man, this was very overhyped and overrated! I like Timotee's acting though.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | December 28, 2017 4:49 PM |
*Fanboy mode* OMG You guys are talking about GOC!! Haven't seen it yet, but I think it would be good! I also think I would like 120 BPM, I like the trailer.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 28, 2017 4:52 PM |
Was there any reason they couldn't have just made the younger partner 18?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 28, 2017 4:53 PM |
Yes, R45, that’s another thing they could’ve done. They veered from the book in numerous other ways; why not make him 18, too?
But alas, that shouldn’t distract us from what’s otherwise a good movie. What difference does a year make, really?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 28, 2017 4:55 PM |
Where I live, he would still be considered a child under the law, and the older partner would go to jail and lose everything.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | December 28, 2017 4:57 PM |
R46 Just curious. What is it about the movie that you liked? (This is a serious question, no shade or anything like that)
by Anonymous | reply 48 | December 28, 2017 4:57 PM |
I am really tired over film "critics" and their form-over-substance attitude towards motion pictures.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | December 28, 2017 4:57 PM |
I can't remember. Do they actually state Elio's age in the film?
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 28, 2017 4:58 PM |
Yes, R50.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | December 28, 2017 5:08 PM |
R51 when?

R52, when what? He’s 17.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | December 28, 2017 5:32 PM |
When was it said in the film? I know it was clear in the book, but did they actually say it in the film?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | December 28, 2017 5:44 PM |
God's Own Country is a far better movie than CMBYN - not least because it doesn't have that creepy pedo vibe.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | December 28, 2017 6:07 PM |
GOC is better than BBM in one major sense - none of the main characters die in the end.
It was revolutionary in the sense that it's a gay love story with a happy ending; no-one feels tortured for being gay and there is no jaded, coming out arc to the story.
As regards CMBYN - why weren't actors who looked the ages of the characters they were playing picked. Arme Hammer is a very attractive man, but he looks 35. Chalamet played a 17 year old - why couldn't they have made the character 18, and looking 18 as well?
It was unsettling to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | December 28, 2017 6:12 PM |
R61 are you the pedo troll?? Are you out to ruin this thread too like you have done to the Armie one?
by Anonymous | reply 62 | December 28, 2017 6:15 PM |
I wonder in the scene in the grass, when Elio grabs Oliver's crotch and rubs it, if they had Armie wearing a cup or something, or if they just went "Yup, you are going to grab his dick and it's actually going to sexual activity on TV between you two".
by Anonymous | reply 63 | December 28, 2017 6:19 PM |
I saw the movie yesterday. I thought it was great. The father's talk to his son was – alone – worth the price of admission. I was warned that the movie was paced a bit "slowly," so I was prepared for that. In retrospect, the long journey to expressing their feelings for each other, while frustrating in one respect, seemed designed to underscore the lost opportunity of the preceding days and weeks from when they had first met.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | December 28, 2017 6:24 PM |

Dear god...17 year olds are legally able to have sex in most countries. Many parents would be totally delighted if their kids waited until 17. And had it with a clean and intelligent person like Oliver rather than some coked out petty criminal. But I suppose if you are from a country that allows you to buy guns before you can buy a bloody beer it's easy to get confused. Brilliant film, Timmy and Armie are so good.

by Anonymous | reply 120 | December 29, 2017 2:57 PM |
R119 I agree. At 24 he would have been age appropriate for the role but 29+ Armie looks WAY more attractive. He's only looking better with age tbh, Elizabeth better watch out.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | December 29, 2017 2:58 PM |
The actual age difference between Hammer and Chalamet is more congruent with the story. Ansel Elgort would have been a terrible choice for Oliver. They're less than two years apart in age and would look like peers. Armie Hammer has the matinee idol looks and the impact of his height are just unbeatable. He may not look 24, but then again, what is 24 supposed to look like? These days, guys in their 20s look like teens, but that didn't seem to be the case thirty years ago. Also, some people just naturally look older than their age and moreso when you're taller than average with a deep voice.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | December 29, 2017 3:08 PM |
Alright then, maybe not Ansel but there’s quite a few others out there who could’ve done it while looking 24.
by Anonymous | reply 123 | December 29, 2017 4:35 PM |
Fact is the only way in which Hammer isn't perfect for the role is his age. In every other way, he is Oliver. Sure you could find someone younger but you'd have to compensate something else.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 29, 2017 4:37 PM |
I would agree that Armie’s demeanor as Oliver was perfect. But his height did make his movements feel a bit awkward sometimes. I can also see why Luca made him drop so much weight. It de-aged him to some degree.
by Anonymous | reply 125 | December 29, 2017 5:04 PM |
Could Ben have pulled off blond? And would his sometimes-forced American accent have carried the carefree nature of Oliver?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | December 29, 2017 5:08 PM |
After seeing Armie in this, I'm spoiled on considering anyone else for Oliver. It just doesn't compute for me personally. This seems very well cast and true to the source material. I personally did not see some sort of perverse age difference when viewing this like those who are claiming it as too "pedo". Like all things, it's a matter of perception.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | December 29, 2017 5:14 PM |

You guys are getting hung up on the look of his age and why Armie should have been recast - but what about the real reason? He’s wooden AF and a very self conscious actor who appeared to be “watching himself” through the film, where as the other actors (including the younger “gf” and the maid even) I totally believed as real people living their lives. Armie was the weakest part of the film for me and I don’t give a shit how old he looked. Pfft.

I’ve got to disagree you R144. I think the director told Armie to be self conscious....at least at the beginning.
The entire film is through Elio’s eyes: a memory. At first, Armie was an “usurper”. A loud, uncaring and brash American. As the relationship grew between, Arnie relaxed. His hair came down, his clothing was more casual. And he became much more natural in his acting. His posture, his movements, and most especially his facial expressions all said the things that could not be put into words.
I’m impressed by Armie’s performance. I’m interested in seeing him in other films, because of his Oliver.

1. Self - conscious and yet "Loud, uncaring and brash"? Elio was supposed to be the self conscious one, and Oliver (being older) is supposed to be self confident.
2. Oliver's wardrobe did not change. Shorts (unflattering white shorts) and dress shirts, swimming trunks and tennis shoes = casual spring to summer wardrobe.
3. Because Hammer looks like a 40 yr old and is attempting to act like a 24 r old. He comes across as awkward, mentally off, and perhaps self conscious.

Fine then R146

R146 just adds to my thoughts at r144 and I agree. I watched it for a third time with a friend the other night as I’m lucky enough to have the screener, and she thought Armie seemed awkward to the point where it distracted and was “bad character choices.” He just had no subtleties that you remember really and I don’t think that is something that is directed or as simple as a director saying “be self-conscious.” I’m not trying to KNOCK him for no reason - just stating my observation that he doesn’t seem to be the same class of actor or maybe he just doesn’t have the same talent. He was obviously mainly chosen for his physical look If u ask me.
Yet, I.e., I noticed the Third time around little things like Elio trying to hide the face that he was wearing Oliver’s shirt when the girl comes to ask him where he has been for three days, etc. the movie still works because you believe that Elio was most definitely in love. But it couldn’t have been a masterpiece with a more skilled vulnerable actor playing Oliver, IMHO.

*could have been a masterpiece ^^^
by Anonymous | reply 149 | January 4, 2018 3:55 PM |
I think it’s all a matter of interpretation. I thought Armie played it just right given that there isn’t a lot known about Oliver from the novel the film is based. Besides, the Oliver character isn’t necessarily supposed to be as vulnerable as Elio. For all we know, Oliver may have had his heart broken before and was therefore more guarded and more realistic about the limitations of their relationship, their ephemeral time together, and the fact that he didn’t have the same level of support that Elio had that would have made their union a bit more plausible to him. Oliver also had other entanglements back in his own life that we only learned about in the end. That summer might have been an escape for Oliver to a reality that he may not have thought possible for himself or could be possible again. The time thing can’t be downplayed. Oliver was acutely and intellectually aware of the finite amount of time they had together and was much more resigned to it. Elio seemed to feel it on a visceral and physiological level evinced by his emotional release after the peach incident and physically puking from heart sickness(?) on their last night together. This is so much more Elio’s story than Oliver’s. It would be interesting to see the entire summer play out again from Oliver’s perspective to get a better idea of what his internal narrative might be been.

In the scene where they are about to drive to Lake Garda, why was Elio upset when his Dad asks Oliver to sit up front and navigate? Was it because he wanted to use the drive as a way to surreptitiously be physically close to Oliver in the small space of the back seat... or was it because the Dad was giving attention to Oliver?
by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 5, 2018 4:53 PM |
Maybe both, r154. Or perhaps he was annoyed that his dad asked Oliver to sit in the front and not him. I prefer the theory that he just wanted to be close to Oliver.

How long before a porn studio makes a CMbYN inspired film? Let’s cast it...
Actually it could make a lot of $$$ for somebody if done well because the Tumblrina crowd would also go nuts for it as long as the mood is romantic enough.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | January 7, 2018 8:44 PM |
Won't happen. One thing the fraus don't get is that guys like Timothee aren't considered attractive by a massive majority of the gay community. And the Tumblr crowd don't pay for porn.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | January 7, 2018 8:50 PM |
Are u kidding, if I’m not mistaken there’s a whole genre of gay porn aimed at fraus who find it titalating.
And gay porn is full of twinks as well as muscle guys.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | January 7, 2018 8:55 PM |
And what genre is that?
And even Helix twinks are more muscled than Timothee.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 7, 2018 8:56 PM |
Oh well, if it's on Vice it must be true. It's definitely not some woman trying to drum up publicity for herself, no way. And that well known studio Icon Male! The first name in porn for sure! I'm sure you love to think that porn studios care what you think, frau, but they don't.

2 scenes should have been cut (even though in the book): 1)The fruit scene (UGH!) 2)The blathering fatherly monologue near the end with the actor channeling Robin Williams in "Good Will Hunting."

Well the movie received 4 BAFTA nominations: Best Actor, Director, Picture and Screenplay. Along with Timmy's Rising Star.

Finally say CMBYN yesterday and I loved it! It's one of those few movies that would go back and see again while it's still in theaters. Having read the novel back when I was in college, I thought they did a wonderful job in staying true to it. Timothée Chalamet is utterly brilliant and if it weren't for Gary Oldman this year, Chalamet should be walking away with all the awards. I also loved the actress who played Elio's mother, I thought she made the most of the limited screen time she had managing to communicate that she knew exactly what was going on without saying a word.
Chalamet's performance was so perfect that I felt that it eclipses Armie Hammer's performance. Armie was great but I do agree with the opinions that he was too old for the role. Oliver was 24 in the novel but in the movie he appears to be at least a decade older. But that's my only criticism.

I want to see it again soon, too
by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 16, 2018 4:18 PM |
I personally enjoyed the movie more than the novel. The novel is good but Chalamet's performance as Elio is so wonderful he bring the story to life. The movie resonated with me because it brought me back to my first real love and the happiness and pain it brought me.

So you wanted two of the standout scenes to be cut?
by Anonymous | reply 176 | February 11, 2018 10:05 PM |
No way should they have cut the peach scene... fans of the book would have been pissed and also the audiences at every screening I have seen liked and laughed at Oliver's reaction later "what have you done?!".

Probably this had been posted in the many threads that were closed, but James Ivory won a USC Libraries Scripter Award for CMBYN.
