God's Own Country: Part 1

Here's to the beginning of a promising career for Francis Lee.

What’s this movie about?

by Anonymousreply 1December 28, 2017 11:09 PM

There was no need to write "part 1" because this will never get a second thread.

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2017 11:13 PM

R1, a gay love story. Almost as good as CMBYN.

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2017 11:14 PM

Part 1, really? It's not like we've been discussing this movie since June or anything...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 4December 28, 2017 11:19 PM

No, it's better. And better than that condescendingly self-pitying Brokeback Mountain, too.

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2017 11:21 PM
There was no need to write "part 1" because this will never get a second thread.

You post one more thing about that pretentious dago pedo schlock and every other thread about it will get filled up with this. Do you hear me? We are fucking sick of hearing about it. Sick, sick, sick, sick, sick! Give it a rest.

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2017 11:22 PM

The movie does look promising. I love Josh O'Connor in the feel-good drama show The Durrells (in Corfu).

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2017 11:24 PM

I figured it’s a gay love story but what’s the plot exactly?

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2017 11:25 PM

The critics absolutely love it. I can't even find out who distributes it in the US.

by Anonymousreply 15December 28, 2017 11:35 PM

January for streaming.

by Anonymousreply 16December 28, 2017 11:37 PM

I'll never understand those desperate "which / who is better?" pissing contests. God's Own Country is a beautiful movie on its own and doesn't need to be compared to other movies like Call Me By Your Name or Brokeback Mountain.

by Anonymousreply 17December 28, 2017 11:37 PM

GOC is the only one of those that are any good, honestly. BBM was overrated but better than the film that beat it for the Best Picture Oscar, and that other film just makes me sick to my stomach.

by Anonymousreply 18December 28, 2017 11:43 PM

Penises! Hooray!

by Anonymousreply 19December 28, 2017 11:47 PM

It makes me sick that films barely get any chance in theaters before getting dumped into the swamp of streaming.

by Anonymousreply 21December 29, 2017 12:51 AM

No, it was out for about 1 week in the UK in October I think

by Anonymousreply 22December 29, 2017 12:54 AM

R6 do you need a snickers

by Anonymousreply 23December 29, 2017 12:55 AM

R23, you type fat.

by Anonymousreply 24December 29, 2017 12:55 AM

R24 you type rude

by Anonymousreply 25December 29, 2017 1:00 AM

It had a very long run at the IFC Center in NYC... it's been playing since at least early October, and just ended its run tonight.

by Anonymousreply 26December 29, 2017 2:15 AM

I can’t help it. I only saw Neach Rats (I liked it. Loved lead actor) but didn’t compare to BBM. I wonder when I see CMBYN if it would be just as good. I think I will like God’s Country because it doesn’t have the typical sad ending (someone has to die!) and that CMBYN has a hopeful ending.

I consider Maurice the best gay movie.

by Anonymousreply 27December 29, 2017 2:30 AM

God's Own Country is by far the best gay movie of 2017.

CMBYN is nowhere near as good as this.

I like this review from the other thread.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2017 3:54 AM

CMBYN Fans hating on GOC because they cant accept the fact that it is a way better film than CMBYN.

by Anonymousreply 29December 29, 2017 4:00 AM

And if we are talking about the best gay movie, it definitely goes for Handsome Devil. Innocent and non-sexual, yet carries a very positive message. I felt good after watching that film.

by Anonymousreply 30December 29, 2017 4:03 AM

Handsome Devil was excellent (far better than CMBYN) but was a more stereotypical coming of age story. That's not a criticism it's more that it was a reinterpretation of an oft told story. Very lovely for sure, but I thought GOC was more original and edgy (in a good way I mean, not in the pedo sense of CMBYN).

by Anonymousreply 31December 29, 2017 4:10 AM

R31 Welp, havent seen it yet. But looking forward to it

by Anonymousreply 32December 29, 2017 4:17 AM

Amazon indicates the DVD will be available January 30th.

by Anonymousreply 33December 29, 2017 4:20 AM

Has anyone seen 120 battements par minute?

by Anonymousreply 34December 29, 2017 10:59 AM

Loved Handsome Devil I think it is the same caliber as Get Real but BBM and Maurice are in a higher level I norminally hate gay movies with out sex and nudity (like the cowardly Moonlight)HD I didn’t care. For some crazy reason Tom of Finland has none.

by Anonymousreply 35December 29, 2017 11:10 AM

Not yet, R34, but I've heard it's also the best gay film of 2017. I don't care which one is best, I'm happy to see so many excellent films coming out.

by Anonymousreply 36December 29, 2017 11:13 AM

R34 The original thread for that movie is at the link below but it never went anywhere. I've heard nothing but good reviews.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 37December 29, 2017 11:14 AM

Doesn't 120 battements par minute get a world wide release in 2018 and it's just viewed at festivals so far? Does it still make it a 2017 release when it's just seen in festivals? Or is it a movie which doesn't get a movie theatre release outside the festiva circuit and goes straight to streaming / DVD / VOD / etc.?

by Anonymousreply 38December 29, 2017 11:16 AM

Beats didn’t make short list for Best Foreign Film?

by Anonymousreply 39December 29, 2017 11:17 AM

R39 No :(

by Anonymousreply 40December 29, 2017 11:22 AM

R38 The latter, probably. It's only set to open in the UK on 6 April, almost a year after it was shown at Cannes.

R39 No, there was a thread about it getting snubbed from that category but I can't find it anywhere. I think it was deleted for some reason?

by Anonymousreply 41December 29, 2017 11:23 AM

R34 I just finished watching it an hour ago. I dont know what to think of it since its my first time watching an AIDS-themed gay movie, and I cant say I can really relate to it either.

But I do like they're spreading awareness and I DID LIKE the film overall. The sex scenes are also very realistic and hot. No nudity(except butt) but convincing.

by Anonymousreply 42December 29, 2017 12:48 PM

I dont know about being the best gay movie of 2017 though. I think I liked Center Of My World(even though its heartbreaking) and Something Like Summer better.

BUT-- I haven't watched GOC and Tom of Finland yet, so.. I can't tell.

by Anonymousreply 43December 29, 2017 12:52 PM

If you count short films, then In A Heartbeat could possibly be the best gay movie of 2017.
If you count short films, then In A Heartbeat could possibly be the best gay movie of 2017.

That is at least the best animated movie I've seen this year so far. It has everything you could want in a gay teen romance: it's not creepy or pervy, it's not self-pitying, it's not bogged down in pomo/alphabet soup crap, it's just a well-made film about a gay boy following his heart to the boy of his dreams.

by Anonymousreply 50December 29, 2017 5:00 PM

Why do American gay movies leave so much to be desired compared to European and English ones? Heck, even compared to Israeli ones.

by Anonymousreply 51December 29, 2017 5:01 PM

GOC is not a heteronormative movie??

by Anonymousreply 54January 2, 2018 6:58 PM

GOC is far more heteronormative than CMBYN.

by Anonymousreply 55January 3, 2018 1:20 AM

Bullshit. The characters in GOC are actually gay, not bisexuals.

by Anonymousreply 56January 3, 2018 1:27 AM

GOC is promoting a monogamous relationship, whereas CMBYN celebrates sexual fluidity and experimentation,

by Anonymousreply 57January 3, 2018 1:46 AM

I dont know what to believe lol

Is R55 telling the truth? I read a brief summary of this and I didnt find it hetero-suggestive.

Anyway R56 is right. The CMBYN characters are bisexuals, not fluid nor experimenting.

by Anonymousreply 62January 4, 2018 12:00 PM

Ugh...I was wondering how long it would be before someone drug out the tired "Heteronormative" bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 63January 4, 2018 12:07 PM

God's Own Country is 9 times better than Call Me By Your Name.

by Anonymousreply 64January 4, 2018 12:08 PM

So not being a slut is "heteronormative" now? Speaking of God and heterosexual faithfulness, King Solomon had 700 wives.

by Anonymousreply 65January 4, 2018 12:11 PM

We get a year stacked with gay movies and what do we do? We pit them against each other in order to tear down our non-favourites. Typical and exactly why we can't have nice things.

by Anonymousreply 66January 4, 2018 12:13 PM

CMBYN is about a wealthy kid getting it on with a wealthy college guy, at least GOC seems to feature more realistic and relatable people.

by Anonymousreply 67January 4, 2018 12:15 PM

Is the IMDB description correct? I dont see how GOC is "heteronormative", not even the in trailer. It just seems like two guys who happen to be gay.

by Anonymousreply 68January 4, 2018 1:34 PM

And after living in a cowtown for five years, I can tell you first hand that [italic]Brokeback Mountain[/italic] changed nothing. They need to see a movie like this.

by Anonymousreply 69January 4, 2018 1:39 PM

And you expect this to change them r69?

by Anonymousreply 70January 4, 2018 1:40 PM

I really HATE the comments section on YouTube, I basically know now how the movie ends.

by Anonymousreply 71January 4, 2018 1:43 PM

I enjoyed God's Own Country but found it flawed. I enjoyed Josh O'Connor in The Durrells but just couldn't quite believe in him in GOC. His one dimensional taciturnity just didn't seem credible to me. A better actor would have made it credible. I didn't expect to like the Romanian actor who's not my usual physical type but I found him to be sexy and quite believable in the role. The sex scenes were hot but occasionally a bit too 'barnyard' for my tastes. At the end of a hot scene I don't want to be thinking "so they went to sleep with stinky fingers ?"

by Anonymousreply 72January 4, 2018 2:00 PM
A gay love story. Almost as good as CMBYN.

by Anonymousreply 75January 4, 2018 2:08 PM

That French boy can't act.

by Anonymousreply 76January 4, 2018 2:10 PM

Shame that this very hood film is being used by the poster who has a fixation with the "dago pedo" CMBYN. The obsessive nature of the quest to label CMBYN as indecent is peculiar.

by Anonymousreply 77January 4, 2018 2:19 PM

Very GOOD film....

by Anonymousreply 78January 4, 2018 2:21 PM

This is my favorite film of the year so far. (To put that in context, I'm also a HUGE fan of Get Out, Dunkirk, Marjorie Prime, CMBYN and It Comes at Night).

I went to see this movie cold when it came out, not knowing what to expect other than the fact that it had a gay storyline - and was completely engrossed.

In fact I found the last 10 minutes or so - when the Josh O'Connor character realizes he fucked up badly - so suspenseful (because you don't know whether he & the Romanian guy going to get together in the end), I knew I was going to get teary eyed no matter how it turned out.

by Anonymousreply 79January 4, 2018 2:23 PM

It's unfortunate that in this modern day age you are supposed to pick sides for even the most trivial things. I mean, really: Two great gay themed movies and it's Team "GOC" or Team "CMBYN"? That's just sad. It's like everything must be a fight, because, what, there are so few of them?

by Anonymousreply 86January 4, 2018 2:36 PM

[R106]. Look on Youtube. Expect a 4 minute cartoon aimed at a female or emo-loving teen demographic. It's cute enough for what it is but it's nonsensical that someone is pushing this for ' best gay film of the year'.

by Anonymousreply 108January 4, 2018 10:39 PM

BPM was discussed above.

Found this non-spoiler review in Slate.com
There’s a moment about three-quarters of the way through BPM—this crucial shot’s placement in the narrative, neither too early nor too late, is another mark of this film’s exacting delicacy—when we get a glimpse into the dream world of Sean, a passionate lover of both life in general and his new boyfriend in particular, who’s unrelievedly furious at the prospect of dying this far before his time. I won’t spoil what the image is that he dreams or what role it plays in the context of the story, but I was grateful in that moment to be watching at home, because I had to put the screener on pause for a full five minutes to sob. BPM, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes, will be opening wide across the U.S. over the first few months of this year. Because, aggravatingly, it didn’t make the short list of titles to be considered for the foreign-language Oscar, I hope people will take the trouble to find this brave and beautiful film.

by Anonymousreply 109January 5, 2018 2:34 PM

R108 = CMBYN Warrior

by Anonymousreply 110January 5, 2018 2:38 PM

At [R110]. [R108] here. I enjoyed CMBYN but found it flawed in many ways. The only person from that film that I see worthy of a nomination is the young actor who played Elio. I've seen so few of the other films whose actors may deserve nomination that I'm in no position to say that he deserves to win.

Are you the same person who's pushing 'In a Heartbeat' so hard ? It's a cute little film and may or may not deserve recognition as a short film. But comparing it to a film with real historical import (Steamboat Willie) or suggesting that it's the best gay film of the year is a gross overstatement that undermines such advocacy.

by Anonymousreply 111January 5, 2018 3:19 PM

I still don't get the Steamboat Willie shit.
How so, dear? The release date is the 29th.

by Anonymousreply 118January 19, 2018 5:20 PM

What R118 said. I saw this movie like a month ago or something. I live in Norway btw. I saw it in a movie theater. It was kinda awkward with the sex scenes and nudity.

by Anonymousreply 119January 19, 2018 5:27 PM

R113 here.

It's so GOOOODD you guys!! The kissing scenes though... it felt so real. I'd be SO MAD if they don't end up together in real life. They look really good together and definitely looks like a legit couple, that type that gets endless DL threads.

Also, lots of spit, animal stuffs, holes and salt.

by Anonymousreply 120January 20, 2018 11:00 AM

Also, I don't know how some posters here claimed that the film was heteronormative. It was far from it, the straightest thing in this film is that Johnny's parents were a straight couple but that's all.

Not a lot of nudity and sex either as the other poster claimed, especially compared to CMBYN and 120BPM. Pretty dicks though 😉. Though I understand how it could be a little awkward to watch, their scenes together could be VERY sensual to the point that it feels like watching an amateur softcore erotica.

by Anonymousreply 121January 20, 2018 11:09 AM
Not a lot of nudity and sex either as the other poster claimed, especially compared to CMBYN

WTF are you talking about? CMBYN has ZERO nudity. At least GOC showed asses and flaccid dicks.

by Anonymousreply 122January 20, 2018 11:15 AM

R122 I'm actually talking about the sex part. But yeah, saying that GOC has "lots" of nudity is not accurate. There's only one scene of flaccid cocks and most of the other nudity is blocked/side-nudity.

Also, CMBYN and 120BPM showed butts too, IIRC.

by Anonymousreply 123January 20, 2018 11:28 AM

Just saw God's Own Country, and I loved it.

As a gay man, this movie resonated a lot more with me than CMBYN. I felt GOC did more to flesh out the characters and their relationship.

The Romanian actor they cast, Alec Secareanu, is hot as fuck. Who wouldn't fall in love with his character?

by Anonymousreply 124January 22, 2018 11:26 PM

Nice movie w/a sweet love story. I have a few questions because the accents were tough on my dumb American ears. How was that woman related to John - she seemed a bit old to be his mother, was she his grandmother, aunt, stepmother? Why was she so bitter and hateful - she never stopped sucking on that lemon. In the pub, some old guy started flicking beer on Georges - what was that about? Thanks.

The older woman was Johnny grandmother. I read an interview with Francis Lee--the director--and he described her character as a loving woman, but not a sentimental one. I think this is why she comes off as a bit harsh, but if you look closely you see those little moments where she shows her love for Johnny, in her own way--fixing his meals, washing his clothes, making sure he wears proper weather attire when he tends the farm.

I also think, when we are first introduced to Johnny, he's emotionally shut down, and in many ways not a taking responsibility for his own life...and in many ways, that's what she needs him to do if the farm is going to survive. So, I think there is some frustration from her, wanting him to grow up and face his future.

As for the pub scene...well, I read that pretty clearly as xenophobia. Obviously, the man flicking beer at Gheorghe had a problem with him being Romanian, which according to Lee, he saw a lot of in the UK...this growing dislike of "outsiders"...so he felt that it was important to include that sentiment of alienation and discrimination in the film.

He's like a hotter version of Oscar Isaac.

I hope he gets more work in English speaking films, but with his accent, I worry he'll get typecast as the stereotypical "foreigner" in most films, which rarely are speaking parts, much less one of the leads in the picture like GOC.

Shame, because he's gorgeous, talented...and that voice! Argh, makes you melt.

There is also a brief moment where Georghe is wiping away a tear from his cheek while he's waiting for Johnny to come back from the restroom. Clearly he was uncomfortable to be left alone in that hostile enviroment.

Shit. Just realized that he wasn't crying but wiping a drop of beer off his cheek (the guy flicking beer at him).

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and this is mine. I thought God's Own Country was horrible, the first two thirds has very little dialogue. They attempted to make up for the lack of dialogue with every character giving someone else dirty looks. Everyone seemed to hate everyone else in this movie, I found it depressing and uninteresting, I cared nothing for any of these people.

The last third was better than the first two thirds, at least there was some meaningful dialogue. The location was beautiful. It at least it had a happy ending, although some what unbelievable. I applaud them for making a gay themed movie that shows there can be a happy ending for two gay men instead of nothing but tragedy and tears, but I just didn't feel that they developed the characters enough for me to care that much that they had a happy ending.

Deleted scenes. They should've kept in the rabbit and campfire scenes - Gheorghe shushing an impatient Johnny was cute and Johnny making silly jokes and Gheorghe not understanding them was very sweet. The cheese scene was also really good

R135 I loved the deleted and extended scenes (especially addressing Gheorghe magically understanding their thick accent) but I think it was wise they chose to edit them out. The movie is much tighter as a result.

r133 You honestly believe miserable farmers in Yorkshire have verbose conversations? I lived on a farm once and that's exactly what it looked like; all brusque work talk all the time. Also, the lack of dialogue is intentional as it's supposed to parallel the harshness of the landscape and John's life, seemingly devoid of any possibility of change.

Life is depressing sometimes and they make movies about said depressing lives sometimes as well. News at 11.

This movie was so good and a gay drama with a happy ending , that's rare! Alec Bacereanu was sexy.

One thing though was their first sex scene with the mud all over them a fantasy the romanian guy had? That confused me.

by Anonymousreply 144February 20, 2018 11:12 AM

It's real r144, how did it confuse you?

by Anonymousreply 145February 20, 2018 2:29 PM

Who knows?

by Anonymousreply 146June 29, 2019 2:27 AM

I loved it. The only flaw I can think of is that Gheorghe is perfect, a Romanian Prince Charming, and Johnny was too much of a shit for him to be interested in.

by Anonymousreply 147June 30, 2019 11:34 PM

R147 Agreed. I just got around to seeing this. In addition, Josh O'Connor didn't look great in this movie. Alec was hot as hell. They look hot together in real life though.
