I found this kitty.

I've been feeding him for months now and decided to take him in. I've looked for the owners and so far no one has claimed him. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow to get him checked out. Ive never had a pet before so I'm kind of excited. I can't think of a name though so do any of you have any suggestions? Also, do you know what kind of cat he is?

Mr. Biddlefrost.

by Anonymousreply 1December 22, 2017 10:19 PM

Bootsie Gumdrops

by Anonymousreply 2December 22, 2017 10:21 PM

He or she might be microchipped, which the vet can check.

If not and you get to keep it, I like the name Joey. It's unisex, so it works both ways.

Good luck to you, OP!

by Anonymousreply 3December 22, 2017 10:21 PM

That ain't no stray, that's someone's pet.

I would call it "Skeelers"

by Anonymousreply 4December 22, 2017 10:23 PM

That’s one handsome cat. Looks like a basic domestic long hair. Someone will probably proclaim it a Maine Coon, but it’s not.

Enjoy him. Just lost my 20-year-old last month. First time without a house pet since 1978. Will be visiting the shelters after the holidays.

Bob, George, Bruce..... They don’t care what you call them; although, I’ve always wondered what my pets named me.

by Anonymousreply 5December 22, 2017 10:24 PM

R5, they call you "the Help", of course. Mine adds, "...who I did not hire."

by Anonymousreply 6December 22, 2017 10:25 PM

I'd love to have a pussy.

But I don't want Dad to grab her.

:-(

by Anonymousreply 7December 22, 2017 10:25 PM

Gorgeous kitty! What a Christmas present!

by Anonymousreply 8December 22, 2017 10:26 PM

My little guy is named Harry. He's a little rascal, "talks" constantly, great companion, teases his older sister, but is just the sweetest, caring, most comforting companion you could ever imagine.

Enjoy your new friend OP!!

by Anonymousreply 9December 22, 2017 10:27 PM

How about Road Kill?

Please.

by Anonymousreply 10December 22, 2017 10:28 PM

It's been hanging around my place since the summer and he's all matted up, R4. His tail is in bad shape, like all skinny and just matted, so I think he's a stray. He was kind of hanging with a few other cats that are all stray/feral but I'm sure the vet will check him for a microchip.

by Anonymousreply 11December 22, 2017 10:28 PM

Sissy Boodles, of course!

by Anonymousreply 12December 22, 2017 10:29 PM

Kitty.

by Anonymousreply 13December 22, 2017 10:30 PM

R6 Nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 14December 22, 2017 10:31 PM

The cat has been living outside for months and now you're going to bring it indoors to be your pet?

Oh, yeah.

Good luck with that.

by Anonymousreply 15December 22, 2017 10:33 PM

what about shadow?

by Anonymousreply 16December 22, 2017 10:33 PM

He is a beauty, OP!

by Anonymousreply 17December 22, 2017 10:34 PM

I feel his or her name is Sam

by Anonymousreply 18December 22, 2017 10:34 PM

Pay someone to deal with the matts, unless you have a teflon body armor.

by Anonymousreply 19December 22, 2017 10:36 PM

Is this Freak Fuck John?

Why aren't you dead?

by Anonymousreply 20December 22, 2017 10:36 PM

Looking in his eyes, I'd call him Merle. Then you can call him Merly when you're feeling affectionate. Good for you for adopting that handsome guy.

by Anonymousreply 21December 22, 2017 10:37 PM

he shall now be know as simply: captain billyboggins kissysnoggins

by Anonymousreply 22December 22, 2017 10:37 PM

Bryan Setzer.

by Anonymousreply 23December 22, 2017 10:37 PM

R15 if the cat was feral it would never go near people. This cat looks pretty comfortable having it's picture taken by a human, I don't think he is feral. I think he ran away from a home he didn't like or an owner just dumped him. The light markings around his eyes are just like an Abyssinian, but with the long hair he must be mixed. You can carefully cut the mats out yourself with scissors if he lets you or the vet will shave him. Good luck OP he looks like a smart sweet guy.

by Anonymousreply 24December 22, 2017 10:40 PM

Thor

by Anonymousreply 25December 22, 2017 10:41 PM

Yeah, he looks like a sweetiepie. Take him to the vet. Get some tips on proper clean up and de-tangling. As r25 said, your little pal may have been dumped, people move and leave pets behind - you don't know.

But he looks like he has a sweet personality. You lucked out OP!

by Anonymousreply 26December 22, 2017 10:43 PM

[quote]This cat looks pretty comfortable having it's picture taken by a human, I don't think he is feral.

Exactly, he (is it a he?) probably got lost. But no harm in keeping him for six months or a year, till he gets tired of you and returns home.

by Anonymousreply 27December 22, 2017 10:46 PM

Call him Frank, short for frankincense, since it is Christmas and all!

Or you could call him Jesus (pronounced the Spanish way).

by Anonymousreply 28December 22, 2017 10:49 PM

Why did you remove the pic, OP

by Anonymousreply 29December 22, 2017 10:50 PM

Shadow or kip

by Anonymousreply 30December 22, 2017 10:52 PM

Yes it could be a female. Then call her Holly.

R24, when I was a kid we had a feral tabby who lived in our house. My dad brought her home and she ran under the first bed she found and stayed there for like three days. She eventually acclimated to the family. If you went near her she'd run away but she'd snuggle at night and let you pet her. We had her for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 38December 22, 2017 11:00 PM

All of my cats have been strays, and some more feral than others. I found a stray who turned out to be 5 years old. Her hair was matted, she was starving, etc. And I found a one-year old siamese whom someone abandoned. If you show them patience and love, even the most feral cat will come around eventually, but it looks like you already have a head start on that. Give her treats, and she will start to love you. My cats go crazy for the freeze dried chicken nuggets. They run to me when they hear me pick up the container. Good look, and you did a good thing taking her in. Cats are the best.

by Anonymousreply 39December 22, 2017 11:03 PM

If he does have a chip have the vet make sure the people actually still want him. Maybe they'd give him to you anyways.

by Anonymousreply 40December 22, 2017 11:03 PM

I didn't remove the pic, R29?

He's really friendly and seems pretty happy to be inside since it's so cold out. If he doesn't have a microchip ill keep checking online to see if someone lost him and put his pic on Craigslist but like I said I already looked around for his owners.

by Anonymousreply 41December 22, 2017 11:04 PM

My feral cat from the shelter was ear-tipped (meaning he was captured once, tipped, released in his habitat, and captured again). He's such a big mush that I imagine he walked up to people both times and asked to be petted. The shelter records indicate that.

Most ferals can't be tamed to any great extent but I think some cats that are born in the wild want companionship.

by Anonymousreply 42December 22, 2017 11:05 PM

And, OP, that is one handsome cat.

by Anonymousreply 43December 22, 2017 11:05 PM

Obviously if he's spayed or neutered he's not a stray, or didn't start out as one.

I couldn't see the pic either. Must be something wrong on my end because I tried long before r42 posted.

by Anonymousreply 44December 22, 2017 11:08 PM

I wouldn't put his picture on Craigslist OP. You can put area you found him and if someone replies ask them some questions to make sure they are the owner. People are assholes and you never know (nor do you want to) what they will do to an animal.

by Anonymousreply 45December 22, 2017 11:08 PM

Empress Eugenia Evangeline Evergreen

by Anonymousreply 46December 22, 2017 11:11 PM

Don't go looking for his owners. If he's out in the cold, even if he had previous owners, they don't deserve him. I hate to say "finder's keepers," but...finder's keepers.

by Anonymousreply 47December 22, 2017 11:14 PM

Burbles.

Gorgeous. I think there might be some Maine Coon there. I can't get to the full pic. If you and he have been getting along for months, he should be yours. He's young. To hell with the chip. Don't advertise.

by Anonymousreply 48December 22, 2017 11:16 PM

What will you do if it doesn't work out?

by Anonymousreply 49December 22, 2017 11:17 PM

Seconding R45 and R47. No microchip = your work is done + congratulations on your new cat!

by Anonymousreply 50December 22, 2017 11:18 PM

R41 I went to have another look and it told me it had been removed too.

by Anonymousreply 51December 22, 2017 11:22 PM

r41 Image cant be found

by Anonymousreply 52December 22, 2017 11:25 PM

Weird. I'll try again.

I just took in a one eyed stray girl, who I've named Nadine. She's hiding, but I will post a picture. She's wonderful.

by Anonymousreply 54December 22, 2017 11:33 PM

It worked. He's beautiful and looks sweet. There's Maine Coon there.

by Anonymousreply 55December 22, 2017 11:37 PM

Tonto. From the movie Harry and Tonto.

by Anonymousreply 56December 22, 2017 11:37 PM

My great uncle was a bit player in that film, R56. He;s not in the credits, though.

by Anonymousreply 57December 22, 2017 11:38 PM

Then he was an itstybitsy player.

by Anonymousreply 58December 22, 2017 11:39 PM

Mr. Whiskers.

by Anonymousreply 59December 22, 2017 11:42 PM

Sorry, Tonto has been tainted. Ranger would probably be OK.

by Anonymousreply 60December 22, 2017 11:44 PM

OP - That cat is gorgeous!! Beautiful! Personality looks divine. Seriously.

by Anonymousreply 61December 22, 2017 11:46 PM

Otnot then?

by Anonymousreply 62December 22, 2017 11:48 PM

OP, what a beautiful cat! I've taken in strays and it's worked out really well. My sweetest, most affectionate cat was feral and slept on my porch. I would feed him and one day when it was raining I found him wet and curled up in a flower pot. I wrapped him in a towel and brought him inside and dried and cuddled him. He never wanted to go out again. When I would stand he would wrap his little front legs around my leg and hug me tight. He was the sweetest most affectionate cat I've ever had. Just a snuggle bunny. His name was Brownie. Regarding the matted fur, a vet will give a cat a bath and a nice hair cut and the fur will grow back in just fine. Better than trying to do it yourself. Have fun with your new kitty!

by Anonymousreply 63December 22, 2017 11:49 PM

I just want to pass on a useful tip I read recently. Use a backpack for dealing with clipping nails giving meds whatever else. You can zip pet inside and just pull out one paw at a time or just head out. Much better option than the old roll in a blanket technique.

by Anonymousreply 64December 22, 2017 11:50 PM

Are you sure this is really a stray cat?

by Anonymousreply 65December 22, 2017 11:50 PM

Chulo

by Anonymousreply 66December 22, 2017 11:50 PM

Keep that cat, OP, anyone who let him go doesn't deserve him. I'd name him Bon Ton, call him Bon.

by Anonymousreply 67December 22, 2017 11:51 PM

R67 yes you are right.

by Anonymousreply 68December 22, 2017 11:52 PM

I’m bad at naming things, but s/he is still a pretty, pretty princess underneath whatever s/he went through.

by Anonymousreply 69December 22, 2017 11:55 PM

Are you going to do a poll with the top 3 name choices? Also, Chulo means handsome or good looking in Spanish. I think...

by Anonymousreply 70December 22, 2017 11:56 PM

Sebastian after Sebastian Bach. He's got that feathered eighties hair band vibe going on.

by Anonymousreply 71December 22, 2017 11:56 PM

gorgeous!! i vote for Merlin....

by Anonymousreply 72December 22, 2017 11:59 PM

Shaun after Shaun Cassidy.

by Anonymousreply 73December 22, 2017 11:59 PM

Guapo Marks

by Anonymousreply 74December 23, 2017 12:01 AM

His eyes look very dilated OP. Is he high? Are you sure he's not using? Gotta be careful about those street cats!

by Anonymousreply 75December 23, 2017 12:02 AM

Don't look anymore for the previous owner. The cat found you because he was not happy with previous owner. Get someone to groom him for the first time, it can be rather painful.

by Anonymousreply 76December 23, 2017 12:07 AM

I like Pierre.

I could see the second pic post and he's a doll.

by Anonymousreply 77December 23, 2017 12:07 AM

He's a very handsome boy. I wish you both well.

I like the name Rupert.

by Anonymousreply 81December 23, 2017 12:19 AM

I think you're both lucky. As someone said maybe, have someone else groom him at first and do other stuff that he might not love, so that he'll associate you only with good stuff.

by Anonymousreply 82December 23, 2017 12:27 AM

Very cute, OP. I miss my cats every day- they've been dead six years now.

I suggest Sam for the name.

by Anonymousreply 83December 23, 2017 12:31 AM

He's a handsome boy.

by Anonymousreply 84December 23, 2017 12:31 AM

He looks like an Andrew.

Very beautiful cat.

by Anonymousreply 85December 23, 2017 12:32 AM

OP - You've been given great advice here. Take your little friend to a vet. Do not - repeat - do not declaw him/her (they don't declaw anymore anyway). Get the vaccinations. Get a good bath and trim and he/she will be beyond happy. You will have given this poor creature a new lease on life. And you will be loved. Big time.

You're both lucky.

by Anonymousreply 87December 23, 2017 12:32 AM

Don't name him Donald! Whatever you do.

by Anonymousreply 88December 23, 2017 12:34 AM

My partner, who saw the photo, said it looked like a painting of a cat. Call him Clarence. HE will have a wonderful life with you.

by Anonymousreply 89December 23, 2017 12:34 AM

R93, a new one is just waiting for you somewhere. You deserve companionship again.

by Anonymousreply 90December 23, 2017 12:35 AM

I meant R83, of course.

by Anonymousreply 91December 23, 2017 12:35 AM

I reccomend a name that ends in "y." They're more fun to say..

Charlie.

by Anonymousreply 95December 23, 2017 12:46 AM

OP. Are you by chance in the Athens, Georgia area? Is his tail bobbed? The caretaker for my elderly parents (who is a saint) lost her beloved cat a month or two ago in that area. Bobbed tail. Pls reply

by Anonymousreply 96December 23, 2017 12:48 AM

Seconding Charlie. Get a furminator to keep the mats away

by Anonymousreply 97December 23, 2017 12:57 AM

I’m in love with your new cat.

Definitely have someone else do the initial grooming and I second a Furminator.

If you’re careful (after he’s been fully groomed) if he has future mats you can pull them out. Just be sure you are only pulling matted fur, not any unmatted around it. Cats will usually tolerate if you’re careful.

by Anonymousreply 98December 23, 2017 1:15 AM

No, R96, sorry. :(

by Anonymousreply 99December 23, 2017 1:17 AM

Lots of stuff on youtube about cat grooming. Also, check on foods that cats should not be given. FYI, unlike dogs, cats have to have a meat diet, or they get sick ("obligate carnivores").

by Anonymousreply 100December 23, 2017 1:34 AM

he's lovely :) name him Andre and you can have fun pretending to be Tim Gunn

by Anonymousreply 101December 23, 2017 1:44 AM

He looks like he’s a polydactyl cat (more than four front claws on each foot), which makes him an excellent mouser!

by Anonymousreply 102December 23, 2017 1:48 AM

Great

by Anonymousreply 103December 23, 2017 1:51 AM

Leonardo, because he looks like a lion, or Leona, Leonatus, Leonata.

by Anonymousreply 104December 23, 2017 2:03 AM

R102, cats have 5 front claws per paw, 4 in the back, 18 total. Anymore than that and they're polydactyl.

by Anonymousreply 105December 23, 2017 2:04 AM

This is so much better than getting a kitty from the shelter. If he doesn't work out, you can just dump him back outside without any guilt.

by Anonymousreply 106December 23, 2017 2:11 AM

He looks like a Max.

by Anonymousreply 107December 23, 2017 2:15 AM

Beautiful cat, OP. How about Yule, since you are adopting him around Yuletide. Yuyu for short.

by Anonymousreply 108December 23, 2017 2:15 AM

Since he looks like he's trying to hypnotize you in r79, how about the name Svengali.

by Anonymousreply 109December 23, 2017 2:17 AM

R106 - How about we dump **your ass** out in the cold?

by Anonymousreply 110December 23, 2017 2:23 AM

R105 - yes, I was not including the dewclaw in my count. That’s why I referred to four front claws; think “four fingers and a thumb.”

by Anonymousreply 111December 23, 2017 2:24 AM

Fuck "Charlie," that's as bad as naming him "fluffy."

Name: Reginald. Reggy for short.

GET THE THING FIXED, please.

by Anonymousreply 112December 23, 2017 2:34 AM

Max, Oscar, Charlie, or Sam. All good choices.

by Anonymousreply 113December 23, 2017 2:52 AM

His name is Earl Peterson. I haven’t seen him in a decade.

by Anonymousreply 114December 23, 2017 3:13 AM

OP, I keep looking at this picture. I think I have a crush on your kitty.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 115December 23, 2017 3:33 AM

Get him fixed right away, or he will start to mark his territory, and you can't get that stink out. I have a cat whose fur gets knotted, and I use the attached come to detangle. If you're gentle and patient with the comb, they will let you do it. Also: litter. I use the Breeze system, because it lets me flush the poop, and the pee gets trapped in a pad i can replace when needed. Having to scoop pee is a nightmare. And another word of advice: Try to use as much grain-free food as possible. I've had a few cats get diabetes over the years, and I'm convinced it was the cheap food I might have fed them. No more. Now, they all get dehydrated raw expensive stuff, and they seem to be a lot healthier.

And your cat really is beautiful. Good for you for giving him or her a chance for a good life.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 116December 23, 2017 3:45 AM

He definitely looks like he has Maine Coon in him, judging by the size of his muzzle, ruff and temperament. He chose you to be his friend, and you're a good human to adopt him.

Chauncey would be a nice name for him.

by Anonymousreply 117December 23, 2017 3:58 AM

My grandmother had a huge white car named Peter. He was tall enough on his hind legs to pull things off the counter. One time it was a big piece of raw cod, and he grabbed it and dragged it down to the basement.

A few hours later he started seeking affection and was mewing a lot. Then he barfed all over my grandmother.

by Anonymousreply 118December 23, 2017 4:09 AM

Yeah, I had my MC til last year. He was almost 15. Your guy's marking and fur length are uncannily like his. He was very sweet and engaged and playful and I can see that in your pics.

by Anonymousreply 119December 23, 2017 4:17 AM

[quote] do you know what kind of cat he is?

From those pictures, I'd say he's a Datalounger.

by Anonymousreply 120December 23, 2017 4:18 AM

It's a cat. They don't give a shit what you call them. Their mentality is feed me and fuck off. It's a long-hair, so speak to the vet about brushing and hair-ball medicine. Be prepared to vacuum more frequently, due to shedding. If you allow the cat outdoor privileges, be prepared from time to time to be the recipient of tokens of feline esteem: dead birds, half chew up gophers, field mice and garden snakes (mine gifted me with a live squirrel. Took me two fucking hours to get it out of my house.)

by Anonymousreply 121December 23, 2017 4:20 AM

"Bitchy and catty"

Canine AND feline?

by Anonymousreply 122December 23, 2017 4:22 AM

[quote]Looking in his eyes, I'd call him Merle. Then you can call him Merly when you're feeling affectionate. Good for you for adopting that handsome guy.

I second R21.

My closest friend is named Merle. Merle's 19 year old rescue, M.K., died suddenly last August. OP, your little guy reminds me of M.K., who was a stunning and very proud cat. My friend's dad died at 90 two years ago, and he had a live-in nurse. Her name? Merly.

Plus, if you like good music, the late great keyboardist Merl Saunders was a frequent collaborator of Jerry Garcia and Tom Fogerty. He could play the hell out of a Hammond B3.

Merle's a great name, and certainly isn't a trite, overused, or twee cat moniker.

And NO "declawing!" That is in fact equal to lopping off a human's upper third of a finger.

by Anonymousreply 124December 23, 2017 4:30 AM

LOL at r121's squirrel. It seems all the funnier given the no-nonsense attitude you exude.

by Anonymousreply 125December 23, 2017 4:40 AM

R125 I've been a cat slave most of my life. I have few outlets for rebellion.

by Anonymousreply 126December 23, 2017 4:55 AM

OMG what a good holiday story. He looks like a Maine Coon/American short hair mix. Take good care of him, OP.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

(ps take the ad down from Craigslist, no pictures. This is what all animal welfare orgs say.)

by Anonymousreply 127December 23, 2017 5:03 AM

There's an ad? NOOOO.

by Anonymousreply 128December 23, 2017 5:12 AM

This is an absolutely gorgeous cat! Good luck OP, and thanks for saving his/her life.

by Anonymousreply 129December 23, 2017 5:16 AM

I like Merle too.

by Anonymousreply 130December 23, 2017 5:29 AM

Based on the color of fur, consider naming it 'Sterling' or 'Pewter.'

by Anonymousreply 131December 23, 2017 5:29 AM

R118 Once my sweet big orange and white male jumped onto the ledge a the top of the stairs and barfed over the edge. It spattered all over the walls to the floor below and all over my paintings, too. It was a bitch to clean up but he gives me so much joy I couldn't be mad.

by Anonymousreply 132December 23, 2017 5:35 AM

I saved a sparrow from the clutches of my male Siamese, who expressed his EXTREME displeasure by immediately turning around and spraying me. I had to toss out my favourite jeans, couldn't remove the smell of outraged cat pee, no matter how many times I washed them.

I like the holiday name suggestions . Mentioned above was Tinsel, Yule (YuYu for short). My cousin who lived with us brought home a kitten from her boyfriend's Loxahatchee farm in Florida. She's brought her home in a canvas bag, that was almost shredded open by the time they got her home. She flew under the bed, practically never to be seen for months. My cousin put food under the bed. After months she was very skittish of everyone, even my cousin. Eventually you would see her around the room, but totally unapproachable. She named her Sybil as she would exhibit the wild mood swings, and she had beautifully multicolored fur. She got outside, got knocked up. During the pregnancy, she got more and more domesticated and friendly. The night she was in labor, our family was going out to a family dinner and the cat kept howling and walking with us towards the door. She didn't want anyone to leave her. My cousin stayed home, but no kittens till middle of the night, and I watched some born in the early morning (I was around 9). This little cat had 6 kittens. Poor thing!!! But after the kittens were born, she turned into Miss personality and the most friendly cat ever. She later died when feline aids came around. My current cat now was found in a ditch by my daughter's school, around 16 years ago. Tess is the sweetest cat.

Aww, r134, sweet stories. Give Tess a pet for me.

Aslan. (Azlan?)

by Anonymousreply 138December 23, 2017 7:18 AM

That looks like a Siamese Lynx, crossed with something else that’s a long haired breed. Lynx are very intelligent, You’re lucky it chose you. Be careful and kind with house training. Lynx have big memories about who has treated them cruelly. They don’t give second chances. Hold your hands upwards towards them when you need to apologize, and do it right away, so they know it wasn’t intentional. I think your cat will be very loyal and loving as time goes on.

by Anonymousreply 139December 23, 2017 7:28 AM

SUPER CUTE!!! name him or her Noel.

by Anonymousreply 140December 23, 2017 7:37 AM

What an extremely handsome man he is!

I love R71's suggestion of Sebastian after Sebastian Bach, it's brilliant!

by Anonymousreply 141December 23, 2017 7:49 AM

You guys all know that the cat is a beautiful Maine Coon and the owner probably paid a lot of money for it....he better take care of it's coat.

No suggestions for a name OP but he's gorgeous and you're very kind to give him a home. Good for you and thanks for reminding everyone that there are still some wonderful people in the world. Merry Christmas!

by Anonymousreply 145December 23, 2017 8:03 AM

Can we see a pic of his sizemeat?

by Anonymousreply 146December 23, 2017 8:07 AM

Excellent cat. A cat named Fred, I would say. Feral felines absolutely can take to people and the domestic life. A street cat wandered into my apartment in Saudi freakin' Arabia and her manners were impeccable, much as she was the laziest cat that's ever drawn breath. (And she was such a cool cat that I jumped through many a hoop to haul her furry ass back to the US of A.)

by Anonymousreply 147December 23, 2017 9:01 AM

Gorgeous. But yeah....that ain't no stray. In fact, it looks well taken care of.

r116: What brand of food are you referring to - "dehydrated raw expensive stuff"? Thank you!

by Anonymousreply 151December 23, 2017 9:17 AM

You have my sympathies, r132. Nothing more off-putting than waking up in the morning and stepping on "something wet and lumpy"(usually the kitchen floor) to instantly realize it is a giant barfed up furball.

It's fairly rare. But still.......

by Anonymousreply 152December 23, 2017 9:24 AM

[quote]Nothing more off-putting than waking up in the morning and stepping on "something wet and lumpy"(usually the kitchen floor) to instantly realize it is a giant barfed up furball.

Oh yes there is. Throwing back the duvet and finding several hoicked-up hair balls on your sheets and/or on the clothes you tossed on the floor.

by Anonymousreply 153December 23, 2017 9:30 AM

Call him Holly, it works for a boy or a girl!

by Anonymousreply 154December 23, 2017 9:39 AM

Thanks for this thread OP. It warmed my heart to hear about you adopting this stray. He's gorgeous too. And MAN... he is going to love you to pieces for the rest of his life.

I also liked Sebastian suggested my someone and seconded by another. It resonated with me when I read it. And it fits him visually. You need to boil it down to a top three or five and do a poll.

This lovely cat has got huge, bright eyes - so do NOT call him/her Melania, ok?

by Anonymousreply 163December 23, 2017 2:38 PM

Handsome as he is, this is not a Coon Cat. Head shape is wrong, not broad enough. Bridge of nose is short in comparison and has a smooth stop. Doesn’t have double ruff or mane. Small paws without tufts between toes. Can’t see tail, but Cooners have thick double coated tails. Their coats are not as prone to mats as other long haired breeds. They are also the largest of cat breeds with healthy, trim males averaging 12 - 18 lbs. They are muscular and thick, when lifted they have a noticeable breadth and heft.

Not all long hair cats are Cooners.

If not already fixed, do so. Have him professionally groomed then keep up with it with regular combines. If you can live with a cat scratching up your furniture or your having to take precautions, capping or clipping claws, more power to you. If you can’t manage, most vets would rather declaw if it means the difference between the cat having a good home or not.

Somewhere along the line here there was mention of a Craig list ad looking for owners. Do not post picture. Instead ask someone answering ad to send you picture of their cat. Missing and free to good home cats too often end up as bait for fight dog training or with generally sick fucks.

Great Christmas present for both of you. New companion and new home.

by Anonymousreply 168December 23, 2017 3:07 PM

Is it just for the moment we live? Are we meant to take more than we give? I believe in love, Alfie, 'cause without love, we just exist.

by Anonymousreply 169December 23, 2017 3:19 PM

R151. R116 here. I can't attach a link to the cat food, because the link is over 80 characters long, but you can find it on Amazon; just search for "The Honest Kitchen Human Grade Dehydrated Grain Free Cat Food." It's expensive, but my cats love it, it seems better, and I don't to deal with those horrendously stinky empty cat food cans, which can smell up the place in no time.

I used to work in advertising on a tuna account, and -- StarKist -- and they also own 9-Lives cat food. Most tuna companies, actually, own cat food companies, because the stuff that is too gross to put in the human food is used in the cat food. And, the quality of ingredients in canned cat food is appalling. You wouldn't feed it to your dog. Or cat.

by Anonymousreply 184December 23, 2017 5:57 PM

Did the vet say how old he is? If he's older and since he's been outside for who knows how long, you might want to consider dental cleaning. If the teeth become infected it can lead to other health problems

Finders keepers. A found cat is a very loyal companion. His name will evolve. You will give him the official "vet name" for dignified public use, but around the house he will have his secret silly cat name that only you and he will know and share.

by Anonymousreply 192December 23, 2017 6:20 PM

"Declawing" a cat is equal to amputating a human finger at the top knuckle. It is banned in most of Europe. There is no bedrest for cats, so they are in great pain when walking after surgery. It can also affect their wonderful sense of balance. (Imagine walking with the top third of your toes missing.) Your cat would hate you. There are a number of alternatives, such as glue-on nail covers and aversion training.

by Anonymousreply 193December 23, 2017 6:22 PM

How did the vet visit go, OP? Was he calm? Well-behaved?

by Anonymousreply 194December 23, 2017 7:01 PM

Op back here. The vet said he's about 5-6 years old and in good overall health aside from the fleas, ear mites and teeth. Anyway, the vet I took him to said he's likely been abandoned so I'll go ahead with all the stuff he needs, neutering, so grooming, shots and dental cleaning, plus they have to take out that broken tooth. It's going to be expensive but I'll manage. And don't worry, I'd never even think of getting him declawed. The vet said to just do one thing at a time to make it easier, so that's all good. The other really good news is that my landlord said it's okay if I keep the cat too! This is going to sound crazy but I'm so happy to have him because I'm all alone otherwise. I've been really down and was going to spend Christmas bymyself but now I have him and can go out and get him some presents.

I don't know what to name him yet, but the lady that helps me feed the strays and I had nicknamed him Little Lynx when he first showed up back in the summer so I'll call him that till I think of something else.

Here's another picture of him at the vet.

I adopted my Siamese from the Vet's. She had been there languishing in a cage for months. She looked so miserable. So lonely. Desperate for companionship. I was told that someone drove up one day and just abandoned her - dropped her off at the Vet clinic doorstep in her cage. A very sad story.

Anyway, the clinic named this gorgeous blue-eyed creature "Tiffany." I thought the name had a "hooker" ring to it. So her name is Anya.

This story is making me very happy, because I am one of those guys who worries about all the strays in world, and am always glad when one finds a home. Thank you for taking him in, OP. One of my cats was about 5 when I found her. She was in good health, and it was clear that she didn't live on the streets her entire life, so I tried to find her owners, to no avail. My guess is that they just abandoned her when they moved away, which, my vet says, happens more than you'd think it does. She is the first cat I've ever had who has separation anxiety: she sits by the door every time I leave, waiting for me to come back; she is ALWAYS laying down next to me on the couch; she follows me around the house. I think she must be afraid that she will be abandoned again. She is, regrettably, quite old now, and I can tell her health is declining. She won't be here for much longer. I hope you have your cat for a long time to come. Thanks for making my day, OP.

by Anonymousreply 202December 23, 2017 7:17 PM

Jesus christ it's almost embarrassing how happy I am over some random cat and random stranger on the internet. You're good people OP!

by Anonymousreply 203December 23, 2017 7:29 PM

Another one of my cats has just been diagnosed with diabetes. The first one is fat and lazy, so I can see how she would be predisposed to diabetes. But the one just diagnosed is very active and has never been overweight. I've already got them on fancy feast classic canned food, which is low in carbs. No dry food. No more temptations treats. I give them freeze dried chicken for a treat. Al they think about is food. I feed them 3 times a day and they get a total of 2 cans each.

I can give the fat lazy girl insulin shots most of the time, but I don't see how I can give this latest one shots -- he's kind of wild, smart and strong. And agile.

[quote]The cat found you because he was not happy with previous owner

That is a reckless comment to make. We lost two beloved cats who were treated very well and were very loved. We put up laminated "missing" flyers for months. We also took in a cat who we could tell was a pet but could not find it's owners. Cats get lost and never find their way home. It's quite common. We found this out after talking to animal trackers.

Google Lost and Found Pet Database and browse your area to see if anyone has posted an ad looking for their cat.

Keep looking on Craigslist, too.

The Humane Society has a bulletin board where people post flyers about their missing pets and pets they found. So do some shelters. They may have a binder where you can look through the flyers.

If no luck, enjoy your beautiful new cat :)

I'd name it Lucky Stars

by Anonymousreply 223December 23, 2017 8:41 PM

by Anonymousreply 261December 24, 2017 2:32 AM

Op, Congratulations on your addition. Of you've been feeding him since the summer, he has decided to live with you. Make no mistake - you have been chosen. He looks very dignified and intelligent. Please name him accordingly. In a month he will be the Master of the house. Do not disappoint him.

by Anonymousreply 262December 24, 2017 2:40 AM

He's a cutie, OP. I'm glad you've taken him in. Please keep him indoors, he'll get used to it and life a longer and healthier life for it. And forget his prior owners. Even an outdoor cat shouldn't be matted and left un-neutered. Shame on them.

He looks like he has a hint of tough guy attitude. Call him Francis and remind him to lighten up every once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 264December 24, 2017 2:43 AM

Yes, keep him indoors. My vet (who now heads up a prestigious Vet research university in Canada) said to keep cats indoors. Too many risks outdoors. They are not only safer but have a better quality of life.

by Anonymousreply 265December 24, 2017 2:48 AM

He has gorgeous eyes, truly a little beauty. I, too, am loving this thread.

by Anonymousreply 266December 24, 2017 2:54 AM

MERRY CHRISTMAS, OP

by Anonymousreply 275December 24, 2017 10:19 AM

No matter what type of scratch post or cat wall/tree you buy, there is nothing more satisfying for your cat, nothing else that your cat will love using than your sofa, living room and kitchen chairs to sharpen his claws.

Nothing says flaming queen like claw caps. They're almost as cruel as declawing.

by Anonymousreply 276December 24, 2017 10:25 AM

Nothing says flaming queen more than being the delectably failed cunt R276 aspires to be

by Anonymousreply 277December 24, 2017 10:32 AM

Only if your cat dislikes you. I have had five cats, and only one ever clawed any of anyone's personal possessions. She was fine until I had this pretentious prince move in with me, with his sofa. Somehow, she really loved taking it out on the arms of that sofa. But that was one out of five cats over a span of decades, and she did not attack anything of mine.

by Anonymousreply 283December 24, 2017 8:43 PM

OP, could your next pics be some action shots. I'd really love to see him walking around or pawing at a toy.

by Anonymousreply 284December 24, 2017 8:48 PM

Here's another pic. He's doing really well purring and eating like crazy. I already gave him some of the Christmas presents i bought for him and he's pretty playful. I still can't figure out a name! I've kind of been calling him Howie, but Im not too sure about that.

While I love that you guys are together, you cannot name him, "Howie".

by Anonymousreply 290December 24, 2017 9:22 PM

I like "Howie." I had a Christmas Howie once. He spelled it "Howey." I prefer "Howie."

by Anonymousreply 291December 24, 2017 9:23 PM

He looks so relaxed and has definitely made himself at home OP. Glad he enjoyed his Christmas presents!

by Anonymousreply 292December 24, 2017 9:31 PM

Lucky cat and lucky you!

by Anonymousreply 293December 24, 2017 9:34 PM

Just don't call this cute cat Barron.

I'm dead serious, Barron is the most idiotic name ever.

by Anonymousreply 294December 24, 2017 9:40 PM

I was just going to post about that, R293. It's so weird that he didn't freak out at all. I brought him into my apartment and he just acted like he was at home right away. Online it said how cats might be scared and hide but he didn't at all. The only thing he didn't like was being in the carrier when I took him to the vet, but even when the vet was checking him out he was okay.

This makes me ridiculously happy, both for you and your new little friend, OP, I wish you many years of joy together. Kitties are wonderful, loving companions.

We lost our little friend of 18 years in July, and miss him so much. Reading this wonderful thread has made me think of him and smile.

by Anonymousreply 299December 24, 2017 9:52 PM

In fact Barron might be a good name, given the name's meaning and this cat's courteous, virtuous, almost regal behaviour.

And it's certainly not the poor kid's fault that his parents are total fruit loops.

by Anonymousreply 300December 24, 2017 9:53 PM

Similar situation in NYC. Someone found a stray cat and I agreed to take her. Nice animal until 4 days later when in horror I see what looked like a writhing mass of spaghetti coming out of her ass. I tried to catch her, she freaked, hissed and clawed jumped all over the place and went batshit crazy. Eventually managed to throw a rug over her, wrapped her up, but then she gave a super feline wriggle, bit me and then I hurled her against the wall and killed her instantly. It was snowing like crazy when I took her in a bag out of the house, caught the 6 train and between carriages disposed of her body between 50th and 59th st. No more cats for me.

Some of my stray and feral cats took months to adjust to being inside -- one would poop under my bed pillow instead of in the littler box -- and some took to me and being inside right away. You're lucky you found the latter.

by Anonymousreply 306December 24, 2017 10:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 308December 24, 2017 10:41 PM

R300, that cat's a bit like the human Barron: a don't-expect-me-to-deal-with-this-shit look on his face, nevertheless (or perhaps right because of it) endearing and likeable.

by Anonymousreply 309December 24, 2017 11:46 PM

Hi everyone. I decided to call him Percy. It suits him and he seems to like it!

I can't tell all of you enough how much your comments meaant to me. Thanks for being there and for being so interested in my new friend :) This would have been the first year that I would have been alone for Christmas and like i said before, I had a really bad year on top of that. It's been tough and I went through a lot the last while, but he makes me so happy. I thought it'd be fine being alone on the holidays but I think i was a lot more lonely than I realized so it's like Percy came into my life at the best possible moment. I have something to look forward to now, you know? It's crazy how affectionate he is. I got a little down yesterday and today too, and he stayed right close by me and followed me. here he is cuddled up beside me right now. I couldn't have asked for a better cat and I love him so much. I promise you that he's going to have the best home.

I have a stray who fits nicely in my life.

by Anonymousreply 350December 27, 2017 4:23 AM

I believe his full name just might be Percifall van Belderworth, OP. He will have many names. Have you read Willie Morris' book "My Dog Skip"? (There was a movie made from it, but it was inferior and not faithful to the spirit of the book.) There is one part of the book that I will never forget. Morris says that his dog had many nicknames, because if you love somethign that much, one name is not enough for all that love. Hence, my cat Skittles is Spiggs, Sterephonic, das Spiggles, the Black Jebus, Grandmaster Skibbs, the Mistress of the Dark, and Baby Girl. She responds to them all. I'm sure Percy will respond to all future names as well. Best of luck with her, OP.

by Anonymousreply 351December 27, 2017 4:26 AM

R221 made me laugh out loud.

Very nice looking cat and Lynx is a suitable name!

by Anonymousreply 352December 27, 2017 4:40 AM

R352.Whoops, Op, I didn’t see your update - Percy is great. Absolutely stunning!

by Anonymousreply 353December 27, 2017 4:43 AM

by Anonymousreply 358December 27, 2017 3:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 359December 27, 2017 4:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 371December 28, 2017 2:05 AM

OP - I hope you are getting great emotional sustenance from all the good wishes and sincere messages of goodwill to you and Percy. I know this sweet little creature will (and is) bring you even more joy over the years. It's a comforting feeling to have so much given back to you for really so little - a belly rub, pats on the head, cozy naps, saying his name and he jumps with excitement, someone waiting for you to come home and play with him. A million things will bring you joy and fill your heart.

We're all so happy for you OP.

by Anonymousreply 372December 28, 2017 2:23 AM

Percy is a great name, it suits him, OP.

I like that the look in his eyes has changed from tentative to relaxed as the thread progressed. What a fun thread. I'm very happy for you and Percy.

by Anonymousreply 373December 28, 2017 2:33 AM

OP I've enjoyed reading your post, updates & seeing Percy's photos. We moved out of the city (Toronto) to the country 2 years ago, & the feral cat population in rural areas is tragic; I guess I didn't realise how huge the problem was until living in an area without a pound or 'animal control'. In the city the only feral cats we saw all lived at our neighbourhood cat lady's house! We recently took in two kittens that were born under someone's porch. It's -25 celsius out tonight & 3 feet of snow, and I'm happy to have saved these kittens lives, and feel badly for any animal or person outdoors without a home on a freezing night like this. You've done a kind thing, and you and Percy met at the right time.

by Anonymousreply 374December 28, 2017 3:24 AM

Heartwarming story, r374.

by Anonymousreply 375December 28, 2017 3:57 AM

I would've loved Clarence or Barron, but Percy's even better.

More pics, pleeeeeease! 🐈

by Anonymousreply 376December 28, 2017 9:28 AM

More pics OP! Any pics of Percy napping?

by Anonymousreply 377December 28, 2017 10:33 AM

All the comments here are really helpful, R372 and Percy likes them too, I told him he's famous lol. He is such a great cat and I still can't believe my luck.

Every time I go to take a picture of him sleeping he wakes up! He's pretty active and loves to run and play a lot, but he does come and sleep beside me at night. He's so cute and puts his paw out so that it's touching my arm or shoulder when we go to bed. One of the other cute things he does is flop down on my lap over and over, like he's throwing himself on me, it's weird but so funny.

I always worry about the stray cats too, R374. It's so cold out and i wish I could do more. There's another sort of friendly cat in the group of straysi help look after. He/she lets me get closer every day and I can even pet it too (I tried to pick it up the other day and it scratched my hand pretty bad but I still don't think it's feral since it still lets me pet him). It hangs out with the same group of cats Percy was with and I worry a lot about that one too. The others seem more feral and my neighbor says they survived last winter, but says the other friendly one wasn't there last winter. Thinking of them being outside and cold makes me really sad, which is why I'll make sure Percy is spoiled as much as I can.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 378December 29, 2017 2:58 AM

If you're thinking about adopting the friendly stray you might not want to wait too long. Percy might get jealous and make it a challenge. Introducing a new cat can be difficult but eventually most cats will accept the new one. It's nice to have two if you're not home much, they keep each other company.

by Anonymousreply 379December 29, 2017 3:47 AM

Nice enough post r374, but I don't get why you have to bring Toronto into it, like Toronto is some kind of special place. It's a big huge city like any other. It stinks and has crime.

by Anonymousreply 380December 29, 2017 4:17 AM

Why be a dick, R380? R374 was only commenting on how cold it was outside, and said it was Toronto so those who are familiar with the weather there would have a better perspective on the temperature. If he lived in Chicago, he could have said Chicago, so i would have a sense of how cold it was. If he lived in Miami, I would have a different sense of the temperature. Some details are often nice; snarky comments like yours never are. This has been a sweet thread; let's please keep it that way.

by Anonymousreply 381December 29, 2017 6:19 PM

Really happy your household is a merry one. I can't believe Percy is so affectionate! Already!

I have always had 2 cats. It's not a 100% lovefest all the time because one cat will tend to be the more dominant one. But does happen is that they become used to having each other around. They will groom each other, sometimes cuddle up together and just generally provide great companionship for each other.

My younger one, because he has more energy keeps his older sister "young". She feeds off his energy and her behaviour mimics a cat much younger than her current age.

When I wasn't working at home, I never worried about loneliness. I knew they had each other so it was a big relief in that regard. If you can afford to bring in a second cat, you will be "gifting" Percy with a buddy, a companion and infuse even more fun in your personal life. I wouldn't recommend it if I didn't believe this to be true.

OP, I have multiple cats. it i almost guaranteed that the cats will hiss and not get along with each other for a few weeks, but it is equally guaranteed that they will eventually get along. Some cats become best friends, and some will merely just tolerate each other. I have a mean nasty alpha cat who hisses at everybody, but she and another one of my cats are inseparable, and always cuddle together, and their age difference is huge, and one was quite senior when the other one came on to the scene, so you never can tell. i wouldnt worry too much about a cat being lonely during the day. That might be a bit anthromorphisizing. Cats are mostly nocturnal, so they will sleep a lot during the day. Make sure you have some things that they can play with when you are away, though, so he doesn't tear up your sofa, etc.

by Anonymousreply 386December 29, 2017 8:32 PM

Thanks for the advice about the second cat. I'm not too sure what's going to happen there. I'd like to take it in too if I can, but I'd have to clear that with my landlord first plus, try and catch him or her. Like I said, it was fine with me petting it but when i tried to pick it up it freaked out. I'll keep trying to befriend it for now though.

by Anonymousreply 387December 29, 2017 10:13 PM

Play it by ear, OP - If the second cat starts to trust you, fine. I've always found it's best to let them come to you. If you had an hour to sit near the outdoor (stray) cat, it would be friend you faster than you petting and then trying to pick it up.

They're odd little creatures sometimes but they're smart. They run the show, not you! LOL! Which is what makes them so loveable. It's interesting that the stray has taken a liking to you. Probably looks forward to seeing you too.

Be patient OP. 😊

by Anonymousreply 388December 29, 2017 11:25 PM

Can you get a shot of him presenting his hole?

by Anonymousreply 389December 30, 2017 12:07 AM

OP, One cat for now. You'll have sufficient.

by Anonymousreply 390December 30, 2017 12:48 AM

OP call the cat Lounger since that's what it is doing on the blanket. (Also since you asked for advice from us on the Data LOUNGE).

It would show your appreciation for all of our input into your new friend. :)

by Anonymousreply 391December 30, 2017 2:02 AM

OP/R378, the best thing you can do is to trap the cats and take them in to be spayed or neutered. That will break the cycle of all these births. Then you can release them and continue to care for them knowing they won't be making more.

by Anonymousreply 392December 30, 2017 3:44 AM

I'd like to hear Percy's thoughts about Vivian Vance, Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and transgenders.

by Anonymousreply 393December 30, 2017 4:01 AM

Yeah, R392. The lady that helps me feed them contacted a rescue organization that helps with trapping them to be neutered. They're supposed to come out and assess the cats (there's four of them that are "regulars") soon, but they said that they won't trap them until the weather warms up since there's no shelter for them to go to after. I don't have a car but the lady that feeds them with me will help to get the traps out to the area where the cats are (it's in a kind of isolated area where there's walking trails) once the weather warms up enough.

by Anonymousreply 394December 30, 2017 4:33 AM

make sure that they are ear tipped if you do that good deed.

[quote]the best thing you can do is to trap the cats and take them in to be spayed or neutered.

Or you could put them down. It's no crueler than letting them starve or reeking havoc on the environment of the native animals.

And that way the problem is taken care of once and for all.

Thank you for that adorable photo of Percy! So sweet - I just want to reach in and squeeze him!!

The year has ended well - all in all for you. You have a new best friend - actually, Percy's got a new best friend.

Hugs to you both! Happy New Year!

by Anonymousreply 402December 31, 2017 10:28 PM

Thank you for updating us about Percy. He is probably the most loved cat of all time, and you have a big heart for taking him in. As far as toys: I stopped buying toys for my cats, because they seem to prefer to play with whatever falls on the floor. Tin foil. Bottle cap. Whatever. Be careful of elastics, though: cats like to eat them, and they should not. And you're abotu to give Percy a fantastic year. Happy new year to OP and Percy.

by Anonymousreply 403December 31, 2017 10:57 PM

Here's to a fantastic and healthy New Year OP & Percy! (And everyone else here!)

by Anonymousreply 404December 31, 2017 10:59 PM

Percy. Poor thing. Such an awful name.

by Anonymousreply 405December 31, 2017 11:01 PM

Shut up, R405. It's a lovely and perfectly fitting name. Even though you're an insufferable cunt I will wish you a happy new year.

OP, be careful with toys. Just because it's sold as a cat toy doesn't mean it's safe for a cat. As a new cat owner I let my cats play with the feather on the end of Da Bird and one of them got the feather off and it became lodged in his throat. I came home to my cat making a coughing, gagging noise and pitifully pawing at his mouth. Thankfully I was able to reach in and remove it before it caused any real damage.

Not to be an "Awfulizer;" just be careful.

HAPPY NEW YEAR OP & PERCY!

by Anonymousreply 415January 1, 2018 11:54 PM

What a cute fluff ball. He looks none too happy about getting neutered. It's a good thing though. My cat used to try to mate with my arm and now he's much easier to cuddle.

by Anonymousreply 416January 2, 2018 1:12 AM

[quote]Oh, and he's going to get neutered on the 30th.

OP, I not only commend you for giving Percy a home, but for being willing to put up with the smell of urine from a tomcat (unneutered male cat) for more than a month. It can be eye-wateringly powerful, no matter the litter, and your home will smell so so so much better once his surgery is done. Urine from a neutered male cat is 1000x less potent, scent-wise.

Also, as his hormones change post-surgery, watch for interesting changes (to make him even more gorgeous) in his coloring/hair length, which can happen!

by Anonymousreply 417January 2, 2018 7:11 PM

Percy is so beautiful! What color are his eyes? They look silver in the picture.

by Anonymousreply 418January 2, 2018 9:17 PM

So true, r417. Percy's personality will be even sweeter than it is. My little Harry was neutered when I got him at 1.5 years and he has a great, outgoing personality. A real character!

OP is in for such a treat!

by Anonymousreply 429January 5, 2018 5:22 PM

That is exactly what my little Harry looks like! OP, R429.

Harry is black with green eyes and he is such a character. I got him from a rescue. He was in a cage sitting quietly. And I walked by looking at many cats to adopt. Harry was very vocal when I spotted him. It was like he was talking to me.

After 4 years with Harry, I now know he is a "talker." He wanted to be adopted so badly that day.

That stray is absolutely beautiful!

by Anonymousreply 430January 5, 2018 5:30 PM

OP -- I have to tell you: Black cats are the sweetest cats. I've had a lot of cats in my life, but the most affectionate have always been black. It is a genetic oddity that blacks cats are part Siamese, and they are the sweetest, most loyal, affectionate, vocal, and adorable cats on earth. You can't go wrong with a black cat. Also:black cats are the hardest to find homes for because are more likely to be abused, because people still harbor old superstitions. If you can take him in, please do. You won't regret it.

by Anonymousreply 431January 5, 2018 5:36 PM

wow, he's beautiful too!

by Anonymousreply 432January 5, 2018 5:43 PM

That's crazy, R430!! :)

This stray was really shy at first but he got to know me and let me pet him. He's the one that scratched my hand when I picked him up, so now I have to earn his trust again I guess. He's getting better with me and let me pet him and came running when he saw me today. My landlord said it's okay if I get him too, so I'm going to keep trying. I'd definitely take him in if he lets me. I feel bad for him since the other two cats he's with are totally wild and I know he and Percy were kind of buddies. The rescue said for now to keep trying to befriend him since it's too cold to trap right now. Here's another pic. His nickname is Oscar btw, lol.

He looks like the Chantilly-Tiffany breed which are in the Burmese family of cats

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 437January 5, 2018 5:59 PM

Cats love freeze dried chicken, if you want to give him treats.

If you want to catch Oscar, get a humane trap from a local humane society. That is how I've caught all of my once-feral, now loving cats. Put the smelliest food you can find in it -- I used sardines -- because they need to be tempted by food to enter the trap. If you're patient, the cat WILL go in the trap. I have had 100% success rate with it, although a few cats have bitten me when I've tried to take them out of the cage.

It is very very easy to get an infection from a cat bite, by the way. They carry bacteria on their feet, and, if their teeth perforates the skin deeply enough, you will get infected. Do not think it will go away on its own. It won't. It is absurdly easy to get rid to get rid of the infection; it's been a while, but I think I just had to take one pill or something to make it go away.

by Anonymousreply 438January 5, 2018 6:01 PM

OP you are an angel.

by Anonymousreply 439January 5, 2018 6:02 PM

I would have to get the black cat into my house, it is too cold. What a pretty black cat. They get hit in the street because they are so hard to see.

by Anonymousreply 440January 5, 2018 6:18 PM

Harry is my first black cat, r431. I had no clue about the affectionate nature of black cats. He is so darling, so sweet, so cuddly, so smart.....it's endless.

I do feel so lucky to have him in my life.

OP - If you are reading this post, I think you got yourself another winner so-to--speak with the black stray cat. What r431 just posted is 100% accurate. And you most definitely will never ever regret it.

by Anonymousreply 441January 5, 2018 6:20 PM

Black kitty is beautiful, OP! Please let us know when he is captured and whisked to safety.

Those are two lucky cats! A loving owner and a fan club!😻

by Anonymousreply 442January 5, 2018 6:23 PM

I'd like to second the warning about cat bite/scratch infections. My most adorable, cuddly loving kitty jumped from her perch on my shoulder when she was frightened by a loud noise. She accidentally punctured my neck while leaping away, and a very tiny puncture it was. She would never bite or scratch, a complete limp, boneless kitty who would cuddle for infinity. Within hours the streaks began and I ended up visiting the hospital every day for a week getting IV treatments.

My current cat, a big male adopted as a stray kitten is a doted on and beloved and will chew on my hands when playing. He gets carried away, is very strong, and sometimes loses control. I've learned NEVER to give him the opportunity to bite my hands after getting an infection from another tiny scratch. I had to take antibiotic pills six times a day for 10 days.

Even the most loving, doted on cat can carry infections in their teeth and claws. I learned that the hard way.

by Anonymousreply 443January 5, 2018 7:04 PM

Ooh Oscar is handsome too. If you do happen to adopt Oscar, you'll need another cat pan (really you need one for each cat plus one, but 2 should be fine).

by Anonymousreply 444January 5, 2018 7:21 PM

Here's one of the more wild strays. I've only been able to get close to this one a couple of times, but it let me pet it today which is weird. There's one more that comes, a really small tabby, but I can't even get a pic of it since it usually runs if you get anywhere near it :(

If I manage to get Oscar I'll be really careful to watch out for bites, I learned my lesson when he scratched me last week. I wish I could trap him now, but it's really cold out so if he doesn't come around I'll have to wait for warmer weather. I'll keep trying to make friends with him for now though. I wish I could take them all, so for now all I can do is try and get Oscar and do my best for the other two.

Looking after these cats and having Percy really means a lot to me since I'm kind of a stray too. Kind of like we all have each other, you know? It sounds crazy maybe, but it's like I have a reason to get up every day and do something, even more now that I actually have Percy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 445January 5, 2018 8:42 PM

he let you pet him r445 because the new issue of 'cat ladies' came out with you as a feature!

Kidding affectionately, you're good people. Have you reached out to various rescues in your area? usually they will know if there's any stray cat spay/neuter /trapping help in your area.

by Anonymousreply 446January 5, 2018 8:47 PM

OP, you're awesome and earning yourself some great karma.

Do the outside strays have any warm boxes? They're cheap and easy to make. With this bitter cold even the most wild animals are suffering.

OP. Your last post made me cry, damn you. Here's hoping every Percy in the world finds someone like you.

by Anonymousreply 448January 5, 2018 8:50 PM

Yeah, R446, the rescue knows about them and will loan us the traps in the spring. Do you do rescues? Can guys be in the cat lady magazine too??

There's a couple of warming boxes out there, R447, and also this house, which Percy used to go in all the time. The lady that helps look after the cats brother made it. It's insulated and pretty warm, I've seen that tabby (he's called Seamus) in R445 going in and out of it too. There's a door on it too which keeps the wind/snow out.

Set up a go fund me, OP. I'll donate. I know the DL probably frowns on this shit, but you'll need some help with the vet bills.

by Anonymousreply 450January 5, 2018 9:19 PM

I will donate too and share with my rescue network. Some of my favorite cat ladies are men! I am a dog lady but by default, it would be irresponsible for me to have cats where I am. they're smarter than me and would get out and get run over like the cats I see almost weekly here.

I am the obnoxious rescue chick that annoys people in threads about natural disasters with information about how to help the animals too. I do dog rescue (mostly financial at this point as I have 3 unadoptable dogs that I kept so further fostering is not possible currently ) and rehab behavioral issue dogs for local rescues. You are family now ;)

by Anonymousreply 451January 5, 2018 9:30 PM

Use the kitty's names: Percy and Oscar fund. We'll know. I hope you do it, OP. I'd really like to help out. There's so much shit going on right now that so unpleasant and negative that the chance to help would be actually doing ME a favor.

by Anonymousreply 452January 5, 2018 9:33 PM

also, (you may already know this) occasionally check and make sure the entrance to the shelters are clear of snow. snow around the non entry part helps insulate and keep the wind off though. also, when snow starts melting its good to change the straw/shavings in the shelters as they get wet, flea ridden and can mildew

by Anonymousreply 453January 5, 2018 9:33 PM

OP - Bet you didn't think in your wildest dreams so many posters would step forward to express an interest in helping you with the costs for Percy's and Oscar's (still at large) "care.

To think it all started with four simple words:

"I Found This Kitty."

by Anonymousreply 463January 5, 2018 10:33 PM

Where else could OP go to make sure Percy and Oscar get to continue their bromance? Sure hope Oscar and his more feral buds are warm tonight. It's biting out there.

by Anonymousreply 464January 5, 2018 10:44 PM

R430, I have a similar story about my golden eyed sweetie. Her name on the sheet was Ms. Girl, and she looks a lot like Oscar, right down to the little tuft of white on her chest. We walked into her room in the shelter (the shelter is amazing, with multiple, free roaming cat rooms all equipped with a screened porch) and she immediately head bumped my partner. I walked in a few minutes later and she knew we were together and did the same thing. After that, any other cat approaching us was hissed away. We went through other rooms, but it was too late. We had been claimed. LOVE this cat like no other pet I've had and I've had some wonderful animals. Black cats are truly something special.

by Anonymousreply 465January 5, 2018 10:56 PM

I love pussies!

by Anonymousreply 466January 5, 2018 11:06 PM

What a lovely story, r465! I could visualize it too. Yes, that's kind of what happened to me that day at the rescue. Harry would not stop "talking" to me. It was incessant - he was chatting "Take me! Hold me! I'm yours!"

by Anonymousreply 467January 5, 2018 11:24 PM

They do talk to people, and expect you to understand it, too. I remember the first time I did what my girl wanted and she looked at me in utter amazement. It's not something crazy, like telepathy, just paying attention. She licks her lips when she thinks she didn't get enough wet food. Harry sounds like an absolute love and a perfect 'matigot'. OP, I will add this one addendum about black cats - they have endless dignity and do not like to be picked up. Instead, allow him to choose when he wants cuddles. Most cats, actually, have this, but black cats tend to be a bit more particular. Once you give him that respect, he'll give you his.

by Anonymousreply 468January 6, 2018 12:34 AM

I just got back from putting food down for the strays and can't believe how many people here want to help. You're all too nice and actually made me start to cry, but I don't want to set up a go fund me and take anyone's money when I don't really need it. It's -3 here right now, so the only thing to do until spring is feed them, and Percy is getting neutered at the low cost clinic, so that will only be $40. Thanks so much for offering but I wouldn't feel right about taking any money for the cats when they can't get to the vets or be trapped right now. The other thing is that the lady in my building helps out a lot too. We both buy food and getting the other cats (three of them in total) neutered won't be too much for us together, plus she's getting help from the rescue when it's time to trap them. Please don't be mad or think I'm being ungrateful because I really do appreciate the offers.

by Anonymousreply 469January 6, 2018 1:20 AM

Harry is my buddy, r468. Every single night when I go to bed, here's the routine:

I say goodnight to the 2 cats downstairs in the TV(read: cat playroom with cat tower, plush fleece cushion and sofa with plush blanket) and go upstairs. I also unplug their free flow water cat device.

I go upstairs, turn the bedroom lamp on and settle in with my tea. About 5 to 10 minutes after I get into bed, Harry strolls in and parks himself on my pillow (I have 2 pillows - one for me, and one right behind mu pillow just for Harry). I also have a very soft baby pink Owl blanket on the other half of the bed so Harry can stetch out during the night.

Anyway, Harry strolls in, parks himself on the pillow, sniffs around for anything I might have brought upstairs to snack on (I sometimes bring up a small plastic container of grated cheese - which he LOVES! and give him a few shavings). Once Harry is 100% sure there are no snacks or he has had his bedtime cheese snack, he curls up on his pillow and within 5 seconds is snoring with my hand usually covering his entire snout. A few minutes later, he shifts around, but I basically hold him, have my hand on him as he sleeps. Lights go out and I sleep on my pillow and he sleeps right above my head on his own pillow. All night.

It's just hilarious. It's Harry's Bedtime Routine.

The other cat, Anya has the whole sofa to herself for the night. She never comes upstairs to the bedroom.

Morning is Another Story. As soon as Harry gets the faintest clue that I have woken up - Mad racing starts around upstairs / downstairs coupled with really loud and constant "talking" until Harry is fed.

That's what I meant earlier - all this "talking" and scampering up and down the stairs makes me feel like I am never alone. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 470January 6, 2018 1:40 AM

My Girl loves to sleep on the bed, but I toss too much and she usually hangs at the foot, instead. She's a healing kitty, too, and sleeps next to the sick person in the house. She also never fusses about her food in the morning. Like Harry, she doesn't bother until she knows we're awake. Black cats are pretty awesome. Sounds like BOTH of your kits are really sweet. I'd love to have two, but we're already too tight.

by Anonymousreply 472January 6, 2018 12:17 PM

go fuck yourself

by Anonymousreply 473January 6, 2018 2:53 PM

beautiful kitty OP. If the matted fur is extensive, I recommend asking a groomer to shave kitty down completely. It's ultimately easier on the cat, and a shaved down long haired cat is just the cutest thing. Just keep him/her extra warm until the fur grows back, and brush daily.

by Anonymousreply 474January 6, 2018 3:05 PM

OP, I think you could turn this thread or your story with the kitties into a book. Your story is simple and beautifully told. We need more people like you.

Anyway, your thread about Percy is so touching. I love it.

by Anonymousreply 475January 6, 2018 5:42 PM

Yes! , r475. Or OP - Have you thought about a Blog?

"Percy's Daily Mewsings" or

"Percy and Oscar: Two Lucky Felines"

You could write stories on your continuing efforts to capture, neuter, house rescues. Feed our (recently turned addictive hunger) hunger for news on Percy and Oscar. In time, attract blog sponsors from cat food companies, (generous) vets, cat food products (cat trees, litter, water dishes, grooming tools, fashion wear, etc).

Start a humane cat rescue foundation company eventually - who knows where this could lead!!

by Anonymousreply 476January 6, 2018 6:45 PM

Poor OP, his kind and simple gestures have made us all create jobs for him. Don't worry, dear OP, if all you do is post about your kitties here and make DLers happy, you have accomplished quite a lot.

by Anonymousreply 477January 6, 2018 6:59 PM

Yes OP, please keep us updated on Percy and Oscar (and Seamus et al). Do you guys remember the poster who rescued Boomer? He had a separate FB page for him.

by Anonymousreply 478January 6, 2018 7:02 PM

OP was having a tough time of it a few weeks ago, r477. He had another thread running alongiside this tone which I'm very pleased to say he has abandoned. My only agenda behind the "Blog" idea is to try to show that people like us with good intentions (here on this thread) really do exist. And that we want the best for OP. A"blog" - whether or not he would ever entertain such an idea - would feed into OP's selflesh, kind-hearted and nurturing nature.

OP has several things going for him, such as:

1. Authentic and inspirational writer who can captivate readers

2. A resourceful spirit (connector, networker)

3. A passion for something beyond himself

OP may have unwittingly found a bigger purpose, a mission though Percy's - rescue something as he said earlier up thread that now gives him a reason to get up in the morning.

This has become deeply personal for dear OP.

by Anonymousreply 479January 6, 2018 7:13 PM

selfless......

by Anonymousreply 480January 6, 2018 7:15 PM

Percy's eye make-up in r414 is to die for!

by Anonymousreply 481January 6, 2018 7:15 PM

Start a blog for Percy, OP!

by Anonymousreply 482January 7, 2018 12:10 AM

To all you folks kindly offering to donate:

I am a regional manager for a large property management company in Orlando, Florida. We own and manage over 500 apartment complexes nationwide. Of that, I have twenty-two complexes in my portfolio and on each of those properties we practice TNR, which stands for Trap, Neuter and Release. Although there are many residents who love the cats and help feed them, there are just as many who hate them and attempt to harm them. I have actually lost count of the residents I've kicked out due to animal cruelty. Years ago, one of my ex residents served sixty days in jail after pouring hot grease on a beautiful black stray whose only crime was lying in the sun outside his door.

Right now that cat is sitting on the sofa next to me as I type this.

I am fortunate because I was able to start a 501(c)(3) many years ago which helps defray the costs of caring for the colonies. All in all we feed about 500 cats twice a day AND take care of vet bills. My management company is a huge contributor as are many of the residents. However, many rescues are not nearly as fortunate as I am. There are rescues all over the country who desperately need help.

Percy and Oscar have the OP to look after them. So many cats have no one, and that's where rescues come in. Rescuing cats and kittens is oftentimes a heartbreaking and thankless job, and there's never ever enough money.

If you were inclined to donate to the OP I would encourage you to find a feline rescue or sanctuary in your area and donate to them. If you're not financially able to donate, talk to them about donating your time.

Feral cats outnumber dogs by fifteen to one worldwide, and so many of these cats live terrible, absolutely destitute lives. Helping just one of them won't save the world, but it will sure make a difference to the cat you help.

by Anonymousreply 483January 7, 2018 5:52 AM

Thank you, R483. It is appalling how badly people treat animals. And: if you love animals, don't eat them! There is no difference between a cow and a horse and a dog and a lamb and a cat. They're all sentient beings who need our protection, not our appetite.

by Anonymousreply 484January 7, 2018 6:11 AM

Thank you for a great post and wonderful advice, R483. I shop regularly at a local thrift store that supports feral cats. People donate nice things to them and they raise a lot of money to trap, neuter, release, and feed wild colonies.

by Anonymousreply 485January 7, 2018 6:19 AM

Thank you for taking the time to post this very informative message r483. Greatly appreciated.

by Anonymousreply 486January 7, 2018 8:48 AM

Why did you have to ruin the thread by asking for donations, OP? Since when has Muriel allowed begging?

by Anonymousreply 487January 7, 2018 1:17 PM

R487 Um, reading comprehension fail?

by Anonymousreply 488January 7, 2018 1:21 PM

R487, OP never asked for donations.

It was another poster who suggested a Go Fund Me page, and a subsequent series of posters (again, not the OP) who jumped on that bandwagon and started suggesting donations.

Once that started, the OP (wisely and graciously) expressly said he didn't want or need any.

by Anonymousreply 489January 7, 2018 1:22 PM

I thought it was 483 telling posters not to donate to OP.

by Anonymousreply 490January 7, 2018 2:44 PM

R483 was another poster with reading comprehension problems.

by Anonymousreply 491January 7, 2018 3:50 PM

Lord some people are idiots.

R483, you're an angel.

by Anonymousreply 492January 7, 2018 3:57 PM

I love animals as much as anyone, but the problem is that there have been posters on Datalounge before asking for people to donate to their gofundme accounts. A few months ago there was a poster who pled his case here and received several hundred dollars from some kind-hearted souls. Several weeks later the same poster came back and asked again for donations and that thread was quickly deleted and/or reported. Along with all the nasty folk on this site, there are some good natured souls that wish to help others, and those kind hearted individuals should donate to a registered charity, not to an unknown person asking for donations on an anonymous site. This site isn't for solicitation, no matter how good the cause is. If OP needs help, then he needs to contact a charity in his area.

by Anonymousreply 493January 7, 2018 4:12 PM

r493 Where did OP ask for money? His post @r469 says he wants none.

by Anonymousreply 494January 7, 2018 4:34 PM

I would like to take all this time to remind you that your name suggestions are not only anthropomorphic, but also bigoted in the extreme.

Shouldn't the name be something a cat can repeat? Eeoowf is a great name as is Rawaugh. If you insist on giving your cat a government name, why not expand another ethnicity besides the old WASP standby? D'andre, Earnest, Shaquille all deserve nomination.

by Anonymousreply 495January 7, 2018 4:40 PM

FF

by Anonymousreply 496January 7, 2018 4:48 PM

OP's post is greyed out now. Which one of you bitches did that?

by Anonymousreply 497January 7, 2018 4:49 PM

How is Percy today OP? Any recent sightings of Oscar?

by Anonymousreply 498January 7, 2018 5:04 PM

I'm not searching through nearly 500 comments to find the post, R495, but obviously people here are telling him it's not appropriate to solicit here for a reason. I ff'd the thread, R497, and I'm sure other reasonable people who don't want datalounge turned into a site for anyone to come along and beg for cash for any old reason did so as well.

by Anonymousreply 499January 7, 2018 9:16 PM

Oh, thank goodness we have well-meaning cunts on Data Lounge.

R499, don't drag me into your paranoid shit. I just want the cat to be given the proper name.

by Anonymousreply 500January 7, 2018 9:21 PM

R499 you obviously can’t read. OP NEVER solicited money. Some people suggested he do that but he declined. Geez you’re a perfect example of someone ruining something (this thread) because they are woefully ignorant.

by Anonymousreply 501January 7, 2018 9:25 PM

Other posters were suggesting to OP to start a go fund me and he stated CLEARLY in r469 that he wasn't going to do it. I bet even the Russian bots have better reading comprehension than some of the screeching posters.

by Anonymousreply 502January 7, 2018 9:25 PM

People are telling him he shouldn't solicit money because they have reading comprehension problems. OP DID NOT SOLICIT MONEY. When people suggested he set up a GoFundMe page, he declined because he doesn't need the money.

A wonderful poster at R483 suggested that anyone wanting to contribute to OP should find a rescue shelter to donate money or time.

by Anonymousreply 503January 7, 2018 9:30 PM

Seconding R503!

R483 wasn't saying "the OP has asked for money, don't do it!", he/she was saying, "If you're a kind-hearted DL reader who's been reading this thread and thinks the OP needs money -- even though he NEVER asked for donations and specifically requested you NOT set up a Go Fund Me page on his behalf -- why not donate to a local shelter instead?"

by Anonymousreply 504January 7, 2018 9:32 PM

He obviously DID ask for money. Why else would posters tell him it's not appropriate? I'm not the only person to have ff'd the thread, R501. How sad for you that you're concerned about a thread being "ruined."

by Anonymousreply 505January 7, 2018 9:34 PM

OP's a good soul. He doesn't deserve to get his thread messed up.

AND HE NEVER ASKED FOR MONEY, FOR FUCK'S SAKE

by Anonymousreply 506January 7, 2018 9:36 PM

^^^ OP NEVER asked for money! You’re the one that erroneously claims that . R505, die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 507January 7, 2018 9:38 PM

Sure, OP had the new kitty shake his tits for Data Lounge - but that wasn't a request for moneys.

A fans-only page would tip you off. Kitty has no such page.

by Anonymousreply 508January 7, 2018 9:40 PM

Whoo boy some really dumb people who can’t read infiltrated this post. Funniest and spupidest is R505 whomjust assumes that people are ff’ing because obviously they saw something, can’t cite where but the rumor must be true! Do yourself a favor R505 and pick up a remedial reading book because damn, you need it.

by Anonymousreply 509January 7, 2018 9:40 PM

We all need to WW this thread and FF R505 / R499. If you're so sure he solicited money, show us the post.

by Anonymousreply 510January 7, 2018 9:41 PM

So.... question about ff—i Ff’d r499 and r505 but now all the posts in this thread have ff “greyed” out.

by Anonymousreply 511January 7, 2018 10:00 PM

Shoo! r499.

by Anonymousreply 512January 7, 2018 10:03 PM

Thank you, r487, 05, r499 have deliberately rail-roaded this thread. They should be FF'Dd.

Webbie (Muriel) - Please read OP'S clear refusal at r469 to take any funds. That was never OP's intention.

OP - Please disregard these unfortunate, misdirected posters whose only intent is to ruin a perfectly wonderful and innocent thread on rescuing and finding forever homes for stray cats. I am behind you 100%. Keep fighting the good fight!! Others support you here also - as you can see.

Let's move on with this great thread.

by Anonymousreply 513January 7, 2018 10:16 PM

R505 is also part of this negative, disruptive cabal misrepresenting OP'S good intentions.

by Anonymousreply 514January 7, 2018 10:19 PM

Thank you r506 for that honest comment. And to others for coming to OP's defence.

We still love Percy!! And hope Oscar has come around recently for a visit and a chat with OP.

by Anonymousreply 515January 7, 2018 10:24 PM

FYI - R508, r505 and r495 are all the same idiot who have contaminated this perfectly sweet thread with his vile accusations and deranged commentary.

by Anonymousreply 516January 7, 2018 10:32 PM

Wow. what started as a sweet and lovely thread I've enjoyed coming to has become overrun with nasty and ignorant comments. It is so typical of DL -- take something nice and shit all over it. I'm sorry, OP. I hope the thread gets back on track, and I hope you and Percy and any other kitty you save has a fantastic day. Please ignore those on here who would wish anything less than that for you.

by Anonymousreply 517January 7, 2018 10:33 PM

Thank you r517. I have identified two posters responsible for the "thread attack."

In addition to r508, r505 and r495 - the second poster is r493, r496 plus two other posts.

Let's ignore these sick minds and continue the good vibe!!

by Anonymousreply 518January 7, 2018 10:41 PM

It was r450 who suggested the Go Fund idea. Not OP. I can't understand why people would deliberately distort and misrepresent OP's sincere, alruistic intentions. There are (at last count) two posters who have nothing better to do than "darken" and undermine our perfectly innocent thread with their dastardly hijinks.

Feigning ignorance, despite the fevered rebuttals from kind posters, these two scofflaws willfully and stupidly went on a fierce attack on this thread for not other purpose than to de-rail and shut it down.

This thread was only ever about offering collective support to a very kind soul who out of sheer generosity and goodwill took it upon himself to rescue a cold, lonely and homeless cat and give that animal a new lease on life. This has been one of the most brutal winters on record. OP took pity on his dear, adorable Percy and gave him warmth and total love.

OP is a light for many of us.

by Anonymousreply 519January 7, 2018 10:57 PM

Altruistic......meant to type.

by Anonymousreply 520January 7, 2018 11:00 PM

May we have another picture of Percy, please?

by Anonymousreply 521January 7, 2018 11:02 PM

You can tell r499 is a troll simply because he refused to just use his browser's find-in-page function to find the post he claims he saw.

And he didn't convince people to FF this thread, which means he must have done it himself by playing the system.

by Anonymousreply 522January 7, 2018 11:08 PM

Yes, please OP. A lovely photo of sweet Percy looking cozy!

by Anonymousreply 523January 7, 2018 11:09 PM

Cheers to OP!!

by Anonymousreply 524January 7, 2018 11:20 PM

I didn't ask anyone for any money.

Percy's good. I didn't see the other cats today.

by Anonymousreply 525January 8, 2018 2:04 AM

We know OP. We know.

I hope Oscar is snuggled up somewhere keeping warm. Hugs to Percy!! You're doing a great job. Very proud of you. Everyone says you're an angel and you are. 👍

by Anonymousreply 526January 8, 2018 4:20 AM

In all of DataLounge I have ONE poster on ignore. It's r505 / r499. I didn't see those posts until someone quoted him. He must be pretty unpleasant.

by Anonymousreply 527January 8, 2018 4:56 AM

I tracked all the negative posts down, r527. And FF'd them. I found 2 different posters but they sound like one. Similar voice.

I want to focus on Percy though. That's why we're here. OP and sweet Percy.

by Anonymousreply 528January 8, 2018 5:09 AM

Thanks everyone. Things got crazy for no reason and now my post is all crossed out.

I hope Oscar and the others are warm too, R526. I was pretty sick again today so my neighbor went to put the food out, I'll go tomorrow and hopefully I'll see Oscar and the others. Percy slept with me all day again today and when I woke up he was right there beside me staring at me like two inches from my face and purring.

I've told you about the lady in my building that looks after the strays with me. Here's one of her rescue cats, Dudley. Poor kitty had frostbite on his ears :( He's super friendly and has the loudest and deepest voice on a cat I've ever heard. He's a great cat and is part of the reason why I got Percy. I think he's so handsome even though he's missing the tips of his ears.

by Anonymousreply 529January 8, 2018 5:28 AM

And here's Percy again. Not the best pic, but he's cuddled right against me.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 530January 8, 2018 5:36 AM

Dudley's real cute. I'm glad he found a nice home. Percy sure is a sweetie. Is he inside all the time now? When I adopted one of my strays, Brownie, he never wanted to go outside again. He was so sweet. He didn't even purr for a month after I first brought him inside all wet and chilled from the rain. When he finally did purr it was like a little motorcycle revving up. Rrrr, rrrr, rrrr, purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

by Anonymousreply 531January 8, 2018 5:43 AM

Yeah, Percy stays inside now. It doesn't seem like he wants back out at all. It's really cold where I live and I live in an apartment, so he won't get a chance to run outside or anything.

by Anonymousreply 532January 8, 2018 5:51 AM

I mentioned before that all black cats are part Siamese, and they tend to be very vocal, which is probably why Dudley talks the way he does.

by Anonymousreply 533January 8, 2018 5:58 AM

Percy is so cute 💕

by Anonymousreply 534January 8, 2018 9:19 AM

Percy is taking care of OP now! Morale Booster-in Chief for sick, bed-ridden OP.

OP - I hope you are drinking hot fluids to keep from dehydrating. It's a nasty flu out there.

((hugs))

by Anonymousreply 535January 8, 2018 11:23 AM

OP. I want to do this for you: I'm an artist who paints a lot of pet portraits. I want to paint one of Percy for you as a gift for taking him in, and for taking care of the other kitties. I attached my website link. If you want a portrait of that sweet kitty, email me with a few photos and your address, and I will paint it for you, and for him.

Such a wonderful, generous and exceedingly touching offer, r536!

by Anonymousreply 537January 8, 2018 3:56 PM

Hope Percy is nursing you back to health with cuddles and snuggles OP.

by Anonymousreply 538January 9, 2018 12:50 AM

What a kind and generous offer, R536.

by Anonymousreply 539January 9, 2018 1:36 AM

I hope OP is feeling better. Maybe little Percy now has a touch of the sniffles and is in bed with milk and kibbles.

by Anonymousreply 540January 9, 2018 11:21 AM

I'm a lot better today, it was just a bad cold and i had to use my inhalers a lot. Percy was the best, but wasn't happy when I worked overtime yesterday lol. The good news is I saw Oscar and one of the tabbies this morning so they made it through the cold snap we had here :).

I don't know what to say, R536. Your offer is so nice and very generous, but I really don't want to take anything from anyone here. Please don't this the wrong way, but I just can't take anything from people.

by Anonymousreply 541January 9, 2018 4:07 PM

Does anyone know why my thread doesn't show up anywhere? Is it because it's all crossed off? I can't post from my phone anymore either and after I made my comment at 541 I noticed the thread isn't showing up.

by Anonymousreply 542January 9, 2018 4:22 PM

R536 here. I understand, OP. I'm the same way. I am always happy to give, but am not good at accepting. I get it.

by Anonymousreply 543January 9, 2018 4:57 PM

I still see your thread, OP. Maybe the moderators can fix it. It's such a fun thread there is no reason for it to be blocked. A few people misbehaved but those of us paying attention know you haven't asked for anything.

by Anonymousreply 544January 9, 2018 9:27 PM

I can see your post at r541 OP. Glad you are on the mend OP.

FYI - Someone started a thread about the number of angry posters on DL. A few posters referred to your thread specifically OP expressing disappointment at how a couple of destructive and mean-spirited people came along and managed FF'd our posts on this thread resulting in your original message being greyed out.

Thought I'd let you know.

I'm really glad poor little Oscar is still coming around for chats and nibbles. He's a tough little guy I'll give him that. He's also so very lucky to have you keeping an eye out for him. I wish he felt comfortable enough to want to come indoors to a safer and loving environment for him.

Look forward to another photo of Percy!!

by Anonymousreply 545January 9, 2018 9:38 PM

Sweet kitty, and sweet OP. I hope some other DLers WW the original post so we can see that lovely photo again. Why the F would anyone FF that?

by Anonymousreply 546January 9, 2018 10:15 PM

You can only see the thread if you have it watched or if you search for it. It doesn't show up at all if you just scroll, I guess because it's all crossed off?? I took it off my watched threads and it disappeared totally.

by Anonymousreply 547January 9, 2018 10:28 PM

OP, this thread was mentioned on another thread, as an example of some of the nicer people on DL, who don't harbor a lot of anger or misery. You're an example to many of us. Bless you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 548January 9, 2018 10:31 PM

Thank you, R548. I'm mostly a pretty miserable, unhappy person though and I have a lot of personal issues going on, but I've been so much better since I found Percy, especially since it was all right before Christmas. I know having him won't fix my problems but at least now I have something to be happy about and something to look forward to every day. Right before I took Percy in I was having a pretty bad time, just with some anxiety, stress, feeling numb about everything and even though I still get like that, at least I feel like there's someone there now, even if it's a cat, I'm not alone. I've done a lot of reading, and found that lots of other people feel the same way about their pets too.

by Anonymousreply 549January 9, 2018 10:41 PM

R549 I know exactly how you feel; my parrot makes me a better person and my problems smaller as well, as if by magic.

by Anonymousreply 550January 9, 2018 10:45 PM

I’ve ww’d The thread but it’s still lined out. What else can we do? Moderators? Anyone? Bueller?

by Anonymousreply 551January 9, 2018 10:55 PM

Hi R548 - I just referred to that same thread in my post a few minutes ago. See my post at r545.

OP - I have always had cats. They have been wonderfully soothing companions and terrific diversions keeping me hopeful and less anxious. Over time, you will develop an even deeper bond with Percy and he will truly warm your heart when you are feeling lonely and bereft. That has certainly been my personal experience anyway.

And thank you for your honesty. I think a few of us here can understand and relate.

by Anonymousreply 552January 9, 2018 10:56 PM

Can some of you put up pics or your pets? I think that would make thread even better!

by Anonymousreply 553January 9, 2018 11:01 PM

I've also WW'd every OP post on this thread, r551. I don't know what the DL policy is on undoing unsubstantiated "greyed out" OP messages.

by Anonymousreply 554January 9, 2018 11:01 PM

I've tried everything OP to put photos of Harry and Anya up. I don't know why I can't.

by Anonymousreply 555January 9, 2018 11:05 PM

I am prone to depression and anxiety too, OP, and my animals make me feel much less so. I think we all need a purpose -- or at least I do -- and it helps to know that I have pets who love me and are totally dependent on me. We want to feel that we're needed, and pets need us more than anything. Just think of where Percy would be if he didn't have you? I have four cats and a dog, all taken from outside, but I have no idea how to post photos on here! My favorite right now is a black cat that took me six months to catch. She was feral as the day is long. I was working at a restaurant at the time, and she was living in the dumpster behind the place. We all would feed her, and she seemed to know when it was the end of the shift, and we would bring out leftover food for her. The asshole chef -- I know; that's redundant -- was getting tired of her and was going to poison her, but I made him promise to let me catch her. A humane trap, sardines, and a lot of patience finally let me catch her. She was feral and attacked me for the first few months she was indoors. I thought I was going to have to put her down because she would just not adjust to being indoors, until, one day, she miraculously jumped on the couch, started purring and talking to me. She has not shut up since, and she is unbelievably affectionate. I think the accumulation of patience and the freeze dried chicken treats did the trick. if Percy is already affectionate, you are already well ahead.

by Anonymousreply 556January 9, 2018 11:07 PM

R554, what their policy on falsely greyed out messages is?

Ignore users' complaints, me thinks.

(I ww'ed the thread and quite a few posts, too, btw - particularly those pointing out that OP never asked for money.)

by Anonymousreply 557January 9, 2018 11:08 PM

Now that is another heartwarming story, r556. Harry is a black cat (as previously mentioned). These black cats are exceptionally loyal and affectionate. Thank you for rescuing that poor little cat living in the dumpster. 💓

by Anonymousreply 558January 9, 2018 11:14 PM

Do you have a tumblr, or imgur R555 or R556? Pics have to be posted online first, like when you post pics to tumblr or imgur, then you copy/paste the link to the pic here.

That's a cool story, R556. I'm so glad you saved all those animals. Percy was affectionate right away, but I'm still working on Oscar. I think he'll be harder to get, but I'll keep trying and I'm going to try the freeze dried chicken. I don't know what to do about poor Seamus. He's getting friendlier too. I can only have two cats lol, so hopefully my neighbor will take one of them, if we catch them both that is.

by Anonymousreply 559January 9, 2018 11:18 PM

I don't have Tumblr or Imgur. So I have to sign up for these I guess.

OP - You would die laughing if you could see Harry dressed as a little devil (red cape, hat with gold horns).and Anya dressed as a witch (green speckled skirt with tiny spiders and a witch's hat). I had the vet and all the assistant howling and taking photos of them last October. I time their vet visits around Hallowe'en for this purpose.

R560. You don't have to sign up for Imgur. I've posted photos of my house on Imgur, and never had to register. If I could add a photo right now of one of my cats, I definitely would.

OP, I'm the guy upthread who suggested Merle as a name for Percy. My only photos are Polaroids, that haven't been scanned (hopefully, some day). We inherited two cats a long time ago: a tuxedo cat and a big orange and white ginger cat. They hung out on our back patio, and were very skittish. My Mom was sure the big orange and white ginger was pregnant: "look at the kittens move! she'll be having kittens any day". Then we found a note taped to our front door, that the woman who lived behind us was moving back to Boston, and was glad that her cats had found a good home. She told us their names: Arthur (the ginger) and Merlin (the tuxedo).

Our neighbor's husband had a dog, and apparently the dogs and the cats never blended. We don't know the details, but know the cats were deathly afraid of a broom. We learned to never sweep a room when the cats where around.

Arthur had a mess of matted hair, which my Mom eventually managed to clip from him. He was very skittish and scared, but with time, he became a sweet, dutiful boy. More like a dog than a cat. And 26 lbs of cat. My Dad, who never liked cats, loved him like crazy. When my Dad's Alzheimer's developed, he'd always talk about the day he had to have Arthur put down: it haunted him for the rest of his life. Those huge amber eyes are still something I think about when I need to calm myself. We were so lucky to have him as part of our family.

Merlin was what my Mom called a Knix-knoox (sp?). A Pennsylvania Dutch word for a rascal. He was very dainty, with a black body, but white toes and nose. He'd make his cameo appearances all over the house: in the bathroom sink, in the window box, on the mantel, on your pillow when you went to bed. Sitting on the hood of the car when you had to be somewhere. He knew he was a star, and he made those special guest appearances judiciously, maintaining his star power. We usually called him Merle, but sometimes, we'd call him Merly when we felt especially affectionate, and that last syllable really made him happy. The 'Arthur and Merlin' shtick wasn't my family's shtick: but Arthur was absolutely regal, and he never gained another pet name. Merlin, on the other hand, garnered a whole slew of names, because he was a little wizard.

Here OP - I managed to get a photo of Harry. He's napping on the sofa right now. I'll get better photos of him tomorrow.

Harry is beautiful, R562. I apologize for hogging the board, but your description of Harry as a devil cracked me up, because I'm the artist who posted upstream, and I've painted my black cat -- the one I saved from the restaurant -- as the devil, or, rather, el diablo.

I love Harry!! He's adorable, R562. Thanks so much for posting :)

That's a great shirt, R563!

I'll try to get the Harry and Anya Hallowe'en photos tomorrow. You will absolutely die laughing OP and r563. The witch's hat is slightly slanted on her head making her look like a "tipsy witch" and Harry is right beside her rolling on his back with the red devil's cape flying around and gold horns prominently shining on his head as he plays around oblivious to everyone laughing at him and his sister.

I love your devil t-shirt!!!, r563. It captures Harry perfectly!

Message from Harry:

I'm on my pillow right beside mum getting a back rub. Just gobbled a bit of my nightly cheese snack and settling down for the night. Hope everyone had a purrfect day. See you tomorrow after my breakfast and playtime.

Say goodnight to Harry from Percy and tell him he's famous now too.

by Anonymousreply 568January 10, 2018 1:49 AM

Best DL thread. Minus the idiot upthread.

by Anonymousreply 569January 10, 2018 2:12 AM

My cat sleeps with me most nights. Sometimes he'll start out on his favorite chair downstairs and sleep there and look out the window and spy on creatures in the night. When he comes up to bed and cuddles with me I can feel the stress and tension ease away. I often have trouble sleeping but when he's curled up next to me he's such a comfort.

by Anonymousreply 570January 10, 2018 3:12 AM

My suggestion: Since this thread is getting full anyway, someone (OP) can start a “part B” new thread with a link back to this thread. That may solve the problems some are having with this one, as long as the evil bastards leave it alone.

by Anonymousreply 571January 10, 2018 8:33 AM

Great idea, r571. Maybe with a slightly different title to "mute" the broader attention appeal. If you get my drift.

How are Harry and Anya today?

by Anonymousreply 573January 10, 2018 11:48 PM

Harry and Anya just had their last snack for the day and are "unwinding" on the sofa and Anya on her ladybug blanket - after a full day of loud meowing, adternoon naps, racing around the house, messing up papers on mom's desk to get their chicken lunch (which was 1/2 hour late today!!) and getting ready for bed in an hour.

Anya watched the Blue Jays feeding from the bird feeder on the back deck for an hour. An endless source of fascination. Harry took in some rays this morning as he laid curled up in his cat tree.

About to get Harry's cheese snack - his last treat for the day.

All in all, a purrfect day. 🐾

How was Percy's day? Any Oscar sightings?

by Anonymousreply 576January 11, 2018 12:31 AM

Sounds like Harry and Anya had a great day.

Percy is good! He was happy when I got home and now he's beside me watching TV! I saw Oscar early this morning :) I can pet hiim but nothing more so far. I'm going to try the freeze dried chicken to see if he or Seamus will let me get closer to them.

Percy gets cuter with every passing day!! He is a very handsome lad. Oscar is going to be a challenge from the sounds of it. I wonder how old he is. You should keep trying to try to lure him. He must, in the back of his mind, want companionship but he can't quite get there in his mind - for reasons only known to him.

But it's like anything in life - Patience + Consistency = Trust. Maybe Seamus might be easier. Dying to find out which one will finally relent and "see the light."

Still can't get over how well Percy has adjusted. Amazing little fellow. Hope you're feeling better OP! 🐭🐹

We're only 20 posts before this thread closes out. OP - If you feel like starring Part 2 I think a few of us would be thrilled.

I know two characters who would like it...........🐾🐾

by Anonymousreply 579January 11, 2018 1:55 AM

Ugh......"starting...."

by Anonymousreply 580January 11, 2018 1:57 AM

I wouldn't know what to call a new thread? Maybe it should be more about strays or rescued pets in general?

by Anonymousreply 581January 11, 2018 2:32 AM

Where everyone could talk about themselves and how they got their pets or strays they look after? I'd kind of like to hear other people's stories too, you know?

by Anonymousreply 582January 11, 2018 2:33 AM

Yes! I like that idea, OP. Share you stories about how you found your pets. Like a Q & A about pet rescuing, pet grooming, pet feeding, habits etc. See where it goes. An organic type of thread.

by Anonymousreply 583January 11, 2018 3:20 AM

How about "I found this kitty - Episode II"

or "I found this kitty . . . and love found me."

or "Kitty vs Megalon"

Anyway, whatever you call it we'll be sure to read. Love your kitty stories and pics. Love you too.

by Anonymousreply 584January 11, 2018 3:51 AM

OP -- El Diablo's dad here. I would not count on Oscar letting you pick him up. If you pick him up, he is likely to scratch and bite you in order to get away. You really need to lure him into a trap in order to get him in the house or to the vets. From the sound of it, he WANTS to trust you, but being wary of everything is what lets outdoor cats survive. A suggestion: once you get him in the house, I would keep him confined to a spare room or a bathroom for a day or two, til he gets adjusted to being inside. You lucked out with Percy; not all feral cats adjust quite as easily. Give Oscar a little time to be inside before you give him free range of your place, though, and spend time with him wherever you keep him, and talk to him, and feed him those chicken nuggets. He will come to trust and love you in no time, but you need that indoor bonding experience before he should be let loose in your whole house. I've done that with all micas, and the only one who has had trouble adjusting is a beautiful orange tabby who ran out of the bathroom he was locked in when I went to visit him. It took a good six months before he would let me pet him again. It worked out -- he's asleep on the couch next to me as I type -- but it would have worked out sooner had I spent more time with him in solitary confinement. I wish there were more people like you -- and us! -- who took care of the abandoned animals.

Thanks, R585. Are these the type of freeze dried chicken treats you mean? I bought a bag of them today, Percy loves them, hopefully Oscar will too. I didn't see him today but I'm going out there later.

Those are fantastic treats, OP. There are no awful preservatives in PureBites, just single source protein.

Percy is so lucky (and so is OP).
