Only one show could remain and ABC chose GH. And the plan was to cancel GH soon after, but ABC saw what happened with the replacement shows and reevaluated.

I liked JFP's OLTL, too. The storytelling (Megan McTavish?) went off with Marland-like precision. Yes, you could see the gears turning underneath the stage, but it was so well done, you didn't mind the mechanical nature of it. And then Mimi Fucking Torchin sweeps in on her broom and ruins the show Easter Weekend, 2000.

And that was the end of soap opera for me until either Lynn Marie Latham or Greg Rikaart showed up in Genoa City. I watched Y&R from 2005 until MAB made that show unwatchable, then only ATWT when it was As the Gurl Turns and DOOL on GOOL days. I haven't really watched a whole soap episode since the MAB mess.

I didn't mind JFP's OLTL, although I know a lot of people hated in terms of certain character destruction.

It was polarizing and has fans talking, which was why ABC was happy.

I'm not the Mimi troll, but I agree, that her publisheding detailed plot points of storylines contributed significantly to the destruction of soaps.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Soap Weekly. I devoured it each week, joyous in the information it provided and the respectful way it treated soaps as an art form and the viewers as intelligent people.

While I initially loved reading all about upcoming plot points and actors commenting on what their characters were going through, I eventually found that it lessened my enjoyment of the show. The whole reason for tuning in is to see what will happen next!

And Mimi took that away with SOW's detailed spoilers. Why spend an hour a day watching an episode when I can read all about it in the magazine in just a few minutes?

However, Mimi is not entirely to blame. The shows had to provide her with that information. If they hadn't made the decision to release detailed spoilers, she could not have printed them. Wonder what she said to them to convince the shows to start giving out that precious information.

The most egregious spoiler ever was in January 2004 when Soap Digest put a picture of Marlena on the cover with the headline "Days Killer Revealed" a full week before the on-screen reveal of her as the Salem Stalker.

Mimi had nothing to do with that spoiler (she'd been fired by Soap Weekly by that point). That was Lynn Leahey, who was the Soap Digest editor at the time.

Wasn't JFP the one who approved the frozen Stavros storyline? If she did such a great job running OLTL, how did she go so far off the rails to think that reviving Stavros was a good idea? That was even more ridiculous than the Casey the Alien storyline.

I am surprised people are blaming magazine spoilers for the downfall of soaps and disregarding how much the Internet chats/message boards contributed to it. Before say, roughly the mid 90s, all fans had were soap magazines. Any minute spoiler or casting change was big news, and fans had to buy the magazines.

Once the message boards became prominent, fans could get all detailed spoilers as well as show recaps without tuning in at all, not to mention how much the daily communication with others online influenced opinions about the show and affected viewership habits.

And let’s not forget our pal OJ Simpson. He helped out with burying the genre. Soaps never experienced the same ratings again once the Trial of the Century concluded.

I have been watching GH lately because of the Alzheimer's storyline, which surprisingly is being done quite well. The best actor on GH right now is Max Gail, formerly of Barney Miller. He replaced Ron Hale as Sonny's father Mike and is stealing the show. Granted, that is not so hard to do given the low bar that has been set. I noticed Jason has once again been elevated to town savior and has not changed his facial expression one iota. He is incredibly awful.

Build stories around Anna, Alex, and a returned Genie Francis. I would keep the actor who plays Michael but only if they put him in a speedo so we can get a sense of the dickofdeath. And I would bring back the hot gay guy who plays Bobbi's son, so he can salivate looking at the speedos (not to mention his hot dad Julian).

I would love to see evidence of this supposed Easton "rabid fanbase" which has been used as an excuse to continue to shove him down viewers throats since 2002. The fraus who wet their panties over a vampire are long gone.

R283- Back in those days, GH got so many things right. Casting, for one. No actor who looked like Tony Geary would ever be cast as a romantic lead today. He and Genie Francis had fantastic chemistry and they really sold the story they were given. Even casting minor bit parts - like Slick Jones and O'Reilly - was always dead on. The writing was miles ahead of the writing today. Actors had less authority to screw up their characters and writers honored history better.

I think as the soaps have gone farther and farther from their original roots (with Broadway actors and good quality writers), they have suffered dearly. Wes Ramsey is a fine actor with the charisma and talent that warrents being connected to core characters and families. Peter is one of the most complex antiheroes to ever grace GH. He may be a new character but these are the type of newbies that will keep GH going strong for years to come. I won't be surprised if WR/Peter is mentioned in the same breath as Lucy,Robert,Frisco,Luke,Nikolas,Brenda,Robin and all the other greats.

The problem is that it's hard to tell who is responsible for what. As I said in my post above, for a majority of the time, OLTL fans blamed Frons for everything and practically made Frank & Ron the victims. But now we can clearly see they both sucked in their own right as well.

However, Frank has been a major common denominator in a lot of bullshit, and he never seems to get the blame for it. As EP, he has been through 7 writing regimes on 2 different shows. That's ridiculous.

Then the actors started to complain to Frank and the fans kept complaining that GH was now a cartoon. And we now know that Frank was actively looking for actors from other shows to bring to GH.

So now the show is back to being about the mob and fans are still not happy and it appears the ratings are going down. So I guess my point is, what do the fans want? It seems like we've come full circle and it's back to being the mob show and Bob Guza isn't writing.

R319- It's not just about the mob. It's the overall quality of the writing. They had a mob focused story back in the early days of Luke and Laura but the ratings skyrocketed. Why? Because of a few things.

The writing was superb. Scenes made sense. They hired actors who had charisma and who could act. They used a whole canvas - during the mob storyline, it involved not just Luke, Laura and Frank Smith - Bobbie, Joe Kelly, Ruby, Lesley, Rick, Hutch, Mitch Williams, Jennifer, Scotty, Lee Baldwin....ALL of those characters were interconnected to the mob storyline.

I don't think the problem is a mob story but that it's the mob story on 80% of the time and that it's always so clearly done as a showcase for MB who is a lousy actor in the first place. If the major characters got equal time I think more people would be happy. I've read tweets from Franco and Liz fans rightfully complaining that 2 or 3 weeks go by without those characters being shown and when they are it's for a few 2 minute scenes. Where they are stupid is that they thank FV and GH for those crumbs instead of just telling him they will no longer watch and actually stop watching. Fans all characters not given their fair share of time should do that and not accept crumbs for their favorites.

I guess a lot of people do just stop watching since the ratings are going down. Now in my youth I was not a Luke and Laura fan and when they took over the show I stopped watching for years. It's nothing new for shows to shove certain characters down viewer's throats. But times are different. Kid's in dorms watched in groups back then or rushed home from school to watch. Entire families watched and passed the habit to their kids and yes, the writing was so much better and scenes and the entire show was longer. In the mid 70s an hour soap ran for about 50 minutes of actual show. The scenes were gloriously long and took the time to build to big moments for the actors/characters and even if the audience today doesn't realize why they're not getting satisfaction out of watching, these are some of the reasons. Sure, I didn't like L&L, but most viewers did and never missed a show. There isn't that kind of feeling about the GH and probably other soaps still on the air because the viewer isn't getting that emotional satisfaction by the show giving them a job well done and by as much commercial time as show time and scenes that if you blink, you miss 'em.

It's not mob stories that are bringing the show down -- as noted above, there have been good mob stories. It's making the mobsters "lovable heroes." Enough already with that! The show is telling us that we should be rooting for people who kill, sell drugs, prostitute women. Right. Characters with rich, emotional depth -- e.g., Liz -- are pushed to the background. "The Godfather" movies were decades ago -- time to move on, GH.

But Sonny and Jason are good mobsters.

That's the other problem as noted - in the good old days, mobsters weren't rewarded with lead time. Frank Smith went to jail at the end of his story. Hutch - as good looking as he was - got shipped off the show after his character killed a security guard.

There were consequences to the crimes back then and that doesn't happen now.

I remember a scene in which Sonny was meeting with the leaders of the Five Families -- whatever the hell that was -- and in the middle of it, he shoots and kills one of them in cold blood. What was that supposed to tell us? That acts of violence are okay because Sonny is a "good" mobster? Shoving this stuff down our throats is actually pretty disgusting. GH is just a shadow of what it could be with talented writers and producers who didn't go for the easy out. What the producers of soaps don't seem to get is that the viewers really love the characters. They want to see their favorites struggle and prevail, not be shoved into the shadows by supposedly appealing male criminals and their female companions.

GH has no heart, family, or moral center.

Frank had numerous chances to build up the Quartermaines, or create a Spencer family around Laura with Genie back.

Instead, we get random characters with random connections. Yet none of them are connected to any vets or history.

What I hate about GH is that Sonny is the center of the show and has been for 15 years. Show revolves around his family, thus making Sonny the moral center of the show. A mobster the moral center of the show?!?!

Unfortunately, show hasn't set anybody else to take over as the center of the show, except Jason.

Now, back five years ago when Ron was still writing good storylines, the show seemed to be setting Patrick Drake up to be the center. And I had no objection to that.

I think Carlivati sometimes has good ideas, but the execution is often horrible, which is the case with a lot of his stuff at DOOL.

I remember the summer that Luke and Laura went on the run from Frank Smith and the mob. It was a "mob" story, and it sort of took over the show. But a couple of things: (1) they were smart enough to tie the story back to the other main characters... Bobbie and Ruby were worried about Luke, Scotty was angry that Laura had left, etc. (2) and there were other "main" stories happening, with the Alan-Monica-Rick-Lesley relationships, Jeff-Anne-Joe triangle, while Heather was in Forest Hills about to be re-introduced as played by Robin Mattson.

Still, I think people were complaining back then. They were starting to move both storylines and scenes a little faster (although nothing like today's soaps), and it was clear that a fair amount of the action had moved away from the hospital. To be honest, I'm not the best critic, as the most I'll watch these days is half an hour every six months, and I haven't watched regularly in over ten years so I don't know half of the characters.

Here's one of the Soap Opera Digest synopses from that era.

I've never understood the template that soaps (and TV in general) cling to and never ever attempting originality. Someone's always pregnant, almost always from a regrettable one night stand. Every character should be dead or very scarred, brain damaged, and crippled from the violence, dire medical conditions and perpetual accidents or catastrophes du jour.

There's way way too much unintentional eavesdropping and mixed signaling resulting in major misunderstandings about an un-compelling secret. Yes, Drew and Franco are kinda close now. They're not palling around together but they act a little more like brothers.

Last I saw, a couple of weeks ago, Drew moved into the Q mansion and he's really close to Monica. Maybe he'll be a more complete character when he gets his memory back, which I think is the way they're going or might have already gone. I'm behind in my watching.

1. The Peter saga, which should actually be a good story (Anna has a new kid, whose conception shames her! Maxie is falling for her dead husband's half-brother! Is Peter a sociopath or a victim?), has been abysmal, largely because of Wes Ramsey, who has been a black hole of pretty. (I say this as someone who thought he was so hot back on Guiding Light). The bigger the canvas of the story has become, the more it's inhaled the show. I'm straight-up rooting for Obrecht, and disgusted that the actor is playing these scenes like he's a poor victim. We're supposed to believe someone so conniving, someone who murdered Cesar Faison in the coldest blood, is now a damsel? Bitch, no. Can Ramsey, abort the story, pair Maxie with Jason and let her be bad for awhile.

2. Give Drew something to do! They de-Jasoned him abruptly, and then Sam and he broke up, abruptly, and he wanders around town, pointlessly. All of this should be played as tragedy (and Jason and he should be sharing scenes, even if they don't reconcile). It completely wastes Drew; it wastes all the character progress Sam made (Sam, who wanted to be a mother and business person and move past the wild and criminal life, suddenly wants to be a PI again and gaze at murderer Jason?).

3. Make Tamara Braun great again. I don't mind she isn't playing Carly (that would mean wasting her with Benard), but she has no sizzle as this doctor stranded in B-story with Bill DeVry. She could so easily be a complicated villainess tied to the Jason/Drew story (maybe she knew Britt and Faison?), but give her A-plot.

Huge mistakes by Frank. Letting Geary dictate his last years. His making Roger Howarth Franco. Letting Mo dictate since Geary left.

Frank has shown ZERO interest in expanding or featuring any real GH family, instead we get all these side insta-families in order to push his pets. I remember the same thing at OLTL with all the superfluous characters. Instead of bringing back core family members, there would be a mess of new characters trying to be tied together.

Billy Miller can't pull off anything like that. He's so lazy and is half asleep during most scenes. He fits right in with GH's god awful crew of actors.

SA's strengths are more as a breakdown writer not as a head writer. CVE is actually talented but he is being thwarted at every turn by FV/NV/BB. He is extremely frustrated. He has things story planned & plotted out but then he gets a curve ball thrown by FV/NV as well as Bloom and everything goes in the shredder. Prime example- the sudden hiring of Ramsey. Wes was hired & CVE was told to tie him to Anna. FV wanted Anna to have family because the KMc visits are few now.. CVE also had a whole story for Genie lined up but Varni expected her to go recurring so she walked. That whole story had to be trashed.

FV' keeps adding to the cast & it's made the writing impossible to manage. You have a cast of 1000. & you have minimums to meet . That all leads to huge pacing issues & super short scenes. FV's other main issue is quite puzzling. He is extremely great at making sure the trains run on time, being very decisive & managing all aspects. He's 100% Type A which you have to be to have his job. The puzzling part is that he kowtows to MB & LW. That's a real head scratcher because it's a detriment to morale & the show. NV is guilty of this as well. Say what you will about Geary but he never hit up his boss for a job for his boy toy & he never stammered/stumbled through his scenes because he was blatantly unprepared.. Geary never wanted a reunion with Genie but he also never demanded his character be written as always right or golden. MB is the exact opposite. He has an enormous ego that demands constant stroking be it on screen or behind the scenes.

Lastly, a large number of the cast are very tired of Wes getting so much airtime as a newbie. If I hear anything else I'll drop.

I remember Kirsten's skin was so bad the makeup & hair department had to take extreme measures.

They had to style her hair completely in her face & heavily spray it so it wouldn't move. Her hair was turned into the Phantom of the Opera's mask.. One eye & half of her face was obstructed. The side that was exposed had a deeply sunken eye & cheek. The makeup was applied with a trowel.

Her hair was so brittle & she probably weighed 90 lbs tops.
