I agree, Claire Labine gave Luke and Laura several adventures duirng her two years as HW. She also gave them domestic scenes. I felt L&L were the most well rounded when Claire was writing them.

As for Laura standing trial for killing Damian Smith, when Justus Ward really did it, that was Bob Guza during his first run as HW in 1996. One of the last things Labine did was bring in Jax, while one of the first that Guza did was bring in Carly. Laura killing Damian came shortly after that.

There was a chapter of an academic soap book where the writer talked about a falling out, supposedly brought about because La Geary was HIV positive. When Genie found out, she refused to kiss him. It was hurtful to Geary, who prior to that had considered Genie a friend.

I don't know how two sided the falling out was, but that is assumed to be at least part of the reason why it happened.

When Laura asked him back then, "Can you ever forgive me?", Luke replied, there Is nothing to forgive because you did what you had to do in order to survive. The idea that Luke hated being married to Laura was ridiculous - he couldn't wait to be married to her. The entire storyline arc of Luke from 1979 to 1981 was him complaining that he'd never get a chance to be married to her because she was already married.

Final casting choices are usually made by the EP. Before Gloria Monty, the sole responsibility of the EP was to bring the HW's vision to the screen and to run the show.

As a courtesy, producers and writers always gave actors a heads up about the stories, but the GH writers would have to pitch Tony. Also, a little known fact, per his contract the show was obligated to buy 2 long stories per season from Tony. They didn't have to use the stories, but they had to buy them. It was a nice way for Tony to enhance his already large, for daytime, salary.

Weird that Laura Snaggletooth has now played Carly longer than anyone else.

I recall reading at the time that Galen Gering's wife Jenna Hudlett Gering was the first runner up to play Carly when Jennifer Bransford was cast.

One of the soap rags reported the Brian Frons personally apologized to Jenna for not giving her the role. Apparently Frons wanted to cast her, but JFP and/or Guza wanted to go with Bransford. When he apologized, Frons told Jenna she was first runner up for the part.

Gina would have probably gotten me to like Carly. I hated Phyllis with the heat of 1000 suns when Stafford played her but with Gina I actually love Phyllis.

How and why SBu left GH is very different from why he came back and how they got him back. SBu didn't go to GH looking for a job, they came to him. And to be perfectly honest, per diem and travel reimbursement is minor blip given how they've set up his shooting schedule. He basically has the old Fred MacMurray shooting schedule.

Poor Frankie thought "two Jasons" would bring GH ratings success like OLTL with the Todds, but the Jason mess mostly flopped and now it's all monotony.

The Tale of Two Todds was much more interesting than the Tale of Two Jasons.

While Burton fell right back into the groove of doing Jason, it's left Billy Miller floundering. I have no idea what they're going to do with Drew. And don't especially care either.

Part of that is because Trevor St. John had eight years of playing Todd and building up strong fan support before Roger Howarth came back. Whereas, Billy Miller only had three years of playing Jason before Steve Burton came back. And Miller's Jason never caught on the way TSJ's Todd did.

Billy Miller, Phyllis Stafford, Tamara Braun, Roger Howarth all should be gone.

Of all the characters Michael Easton has played, Finn is the most interesting one. But that's not saying a lot. Easton's low-energy, sulking characters don't add excitement to the show. I seriously question the tastes of his supposedly large fanbase.

His paring with Finola Hughes just feels like pushing two characters together because they're in the same age group. Finn was better paired with Rebecca Buddig; that was the one time his character had any energy. but Buddig had to go to pay for Steve Burton.

The writing for the Tale of 2 Todds was messy AF. The 2 Jasons was tepid & vapid without wanting anyone "look bad"

First of all, let's not cloud our memories here. The two Todds story was a heinous mess in conception. It made no sense.

The reason why it "worked" was because it was essentially about the Lord/Manning family and brought in those aspects as well as the Blair/Todd/Tea triangle which was always volatile.

GH has no core for ripple effects of any story. There were no stakes. The only beats played with that story revolved around Sonny & Carly.

Yes the Two Todds was messy with gigantic plots holes. But it was also must-see TV because RH and TSJ were so good in their roles and sold the ludicrous story. Likewise, we were invested in the story because it affected so many people on the canvas we cared about.

As for the Two Jason, yeah, Sonny and Carly are the only ones who've really been affected. And Sam too. The Quatermaines were an afterthought throughout the tale.

ME's salary had nothing to do with JdP losing his job. JdP was beyond difficult to work with by that point. He was aggressive & very unprofessional. He opened up about all out that later in a SOD interview. He almost lost his marriage because of his behavior. He went into therapy to get a handle on this.

Genie leaving in 2002 resulted in the show shifting its main focus to Sonny, Carly, and Jason.

Oh sure, the deadly trio had been prominently featured in the years before that, but in 2002 they became the show's center. Genie left in Aug 2002 and Tony went on his usual six month vacation. So, the show brought back Vanessa Marcil as Brenda and the entire focus began to revolve around Sonny and his cohorts.

How 'bout a story where there's a food poisoning outbreak at Kelly's Diner? Imagine the ratings soaring with that kind of edge-of-your-seat plot line!

They must have been in talks with VM before GF left and GF said in her interview that she took an out in her contract because JFP told her she'd have to work all summer and she didn't give enough notice for her vacation. TG was always on vacation at that time, so why would Laura be needed for story? GF said that there was never any problem with her taking vacation before but now, suddenly there was. I think they wanted GF's salary to pay for VM, so they made sure to piss off GF enough that she would take that out in her contract.

Then they created that disgusting exit story for her - with Laura killing Rick Webber - and the last scene is Laura being wheeled out in a straightjacket, drooling in a catatonic state. That was a clear message how they felt about GF.

r529 As I recall, Vanessa Marcil returned two weeks after Genie's final scenes. So, clearly they were in touch with Vanessa in the weeks (months) before Genie left.

But they wrote Laura off in such a permanent way -- sending her to the loony bin. Obviously, characters can recover from going to the insane asylum, and clearly Laura did. But at the time, it sent a strong message that Laura was gone from the show.

And they also spit on the legacy of Laura by having her kill her stepfather. What an insult to viewers who had been there in the late 70s/early 80s watching by rewriting history and making Dr. Rick into a bad guy.

There was clearly an agenda going on. Clearly they wanted rid of Genie. I'd never thought about them wanting Genie's salary to pay for Vaenssa, but it makes sense.

Same thing CBS has done with YR and B&B. Thomas was going to be bisexual but CBS forced them to change it at the last minute. YR did a brilliant story of Mariah coming to a realization about her sexuality but the network got push back so they stopped it before it even began. Mariah was then de-sexualized for a year.

Soaps are desperate to cling to the audience they have left, which I think is fairly conservative. In the long run it just will be another factor in their demise since they will be attracting fewer new viewers and the old views die off. At this point, they have most likely long passed the tipping point and probably is nothing they could do that would bring back the younger viewers they had 20 years ago. To be fair, part of the loss is due to cable and other entertainment options that were not around in the 80's, but having stories more conservative and less risk-taking than 30 years ago isn't helping.
