Why do people make up so much stupid shit on this board?

Some of you folks seem to love to embellish your posts with details that are clearly and obviously fabricated.

Case in point: R23 on the thread linked below. An obvious fabrication.

And for what? What is the point?

New here, huh?

by Anonymousreply 1August 8, 2025 5:04 AM

I’ve been told I’ve made up stuff when it was all true, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2025 5:12 AM

Some of the most entertaining threads in DL history have been of dubious veracity. Some people regard detecting elaborate scenario hoaxes as sport.

This is not the New York Times.

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2025 5:19 AM

I believe r23 from the other thread!

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2025 5:20 AM

Why is R23 made up? Planes do occasionally have loons yelling threats on them. Did R23 scare the timorous OP?

by Anonymousreply 5August 8, 2025 5:24 AM

Yeah...the "loon on the plane" thing happens more and more. I don't think that person was "obviously" lying.

I don't necessarily assume someone is lying unless there's more evidence.

Though to be honest I also don't assume anyone is telling the truth either.

by Anonymousreply 6August 8, 2025 5:30 AM

You're correct, but out of all the COUNTLESS examples you could've chosen, why pick that one?

There are endless videos, news stories, etc. of people losing their shit on planes, public transportation, and whatnot; there's even a highly active subreddit dedicated to exactly that (r/publicfreakout; 4.7m subscribers).

You're the fucking weirdo here, OP. How could you be that sheltered/naive?

by Anonymousreply 7August 8, 2025 5:53 AM

I'm not sure why you selected R 23 from that thread, OP. It didn't stand out as fakery at all to me.

Do you know something else about that poster that we don't? Did you do that thing where you can check their other posts (like block them and then unblock or whatever)?

by Anonymousreply 8August 8, 2025 6:39 AM

OP likes blue.

by Anonymousreply 9August 8, 2025 6:41 AM

OP would have challenged the Bonnie Mace threads back in the day.

"Lady ham"? "Squirting girl mayo?" Nobody has sex behind a dumpster!

Sigh.

by Anonymousreply 10August 8, 2025 7:15 AM

OP is probably terrified of flying and is in denial that this kind of thing happens in 2025. OP, just ask your doctor for Valium to take before you fly.

by Anonymousreply 11August 8, 2025 9:34 AM

Face it, OP. You failed. That post has a reasonable chance of being true. There are far better examples you could have chosen. You’ve just made yourself look weird and unpleasant.

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2025 9:49 AM

OP, the only way things will change is if you go into every thread and find every comment you believe to be false and scold the poster. It's the only way they will learn You Are Onto Them!

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2025 10:03 AM

Did you possibly choose the wrong response from that thread or the wrong thread itself?

by Anonymousreply 14August 8, 2025 10:03 AM

There's no reason to disbelieve that post, OP. What's your problem?

by Anonymousreply 15August 8, 2025 10:13 AM

So much flatulence

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2025 10:14 AM

I think he meant R25 in that thread.

[quote] I was flying to Vegas on Southwest. There were 11 older women in wheelchairs waiting to board. At the designated time, the gate attendant announced that, since there were so many people in wheelchairs, boarding would take longer than usual, and if anyone in a chair could possibly walk to the plane, we could take off earlier. Well, it could have been the start of the 100 meter dash at the Olympics, as all of the women jumped out of the chair and rushed to get a seat on the plane. Ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 17August 8, 2025 10:21 AM

OP is so LITERAL

by Anonymousreply 18August 8, 2025 11:10 AM

R17 is right I think, R 23's post on that thread is completely credible and events like this are in the news every few days. R 25's post in the same thread, not so much - 11 women in wheelchairs on the one flight all making a miraculous recovery. Stranger things have happened though

by Anonymousreply 19August 8, 2025 12:14 PM

R17. No, he did not. Don’t try to save him.

Read R34 In the referenced thread where the tedious OP challenged R23 in the thread itself. It was already tiresome there, but that wasn’t enough for him. He didn’t get enough approbation for his original post so he made a thread about it here.

R25 is also plausible but with some hyperbole.

by Anonymousreply 20August 8, 2025 1:07 PM

Hit and run OP!

by Anonymousreply 21August 8, 2025 1:09 PM

You're right, OP. I'll shut down Datalounge this afternoon so we won't offend your delicate sensitivities ever again.

by Anonymousreply 22August 8, 2025 1:13 PM

Statistically that R23 is quite possible. Every time a disturbed and/or threatening person causes a plane to be delayed or diverted or totally deboarded… that is a plane full of passengers in each case who will remember it long, long afterwards. So even if it “only” happens 10x a year, that is like 1,000 people if each incident happened on a fairly full flight. That’s 10,000 people per decade. Etc.

OP it’s ok to leave your house every so often.

by Anonymousreply 23August 8, 2025 1:19 PM

I think OP is right. Many of you said Brian Tyler Cohen is gay.

by Anonymousreply 24August 8, 2025 1:23 PM

The best storytellers often take liberties with the truth. So do others who aren’t that interesting.

Don’t you know couples who annoyingly correct each other mid-story or have friends who recount things you were involved in in ways you don’t recognize?

by Anonymousreply 25August 8, 2025 1:25 PM

[quote] The best storytellers often take liberties with the truth.

It’s true that that is what the news media and journalists do, but should we hold ourselves to a higher standard?

by Anonymousreply 26August 8, 2025 1:31 PM

R23 from the other thread has returned with receipts! See r57 in the other thread.

by Anonymousreply 27August 8, 2025 2:14 PM

R23 of the plane boarding thread who offended OP so much dropped some receipts that allowed verification of the incident. Now OP will tell us that R23 recalled this three year old news story and inserted himself into it.

why the fuck would you feel compelled to tell the truth online

by Anonymousreply 30August 8, 2025 2:50 PM

[quote] It’s true that that is what the news media and journalists do, but should we hold ourselves to a higher standard?

Journalists have professional standards. “Storytelling” is something different. It is an act of social entertainment, not reporting.

by Anonymousreply 31August 8, 2025 3:02 PM

[quote] why the fuck would you feel compelled to tell the truth online

Honestly, I don’t think I have ever stated anything on DL I knew to be untrue. I often double check the facts before posting something to make its correct. There’s been a handful of times I’ve made a mistake, but it was not intentional.

When I state personal things, like I have changed the sheets on my bed for several years, it’s literally true.

by Anonymousreply 32August 8, 2025 3:04 PM

[quote] Journalists have professional standards. “Storytelling” is something different. It is an act of social entertainment, not reporting.

I agree that hey should be separate. It’s unfortunate that the line between the two is now practically non-existent.

by Anonymousreply 33August 8, 2025 3:06 PM

[quote]why the fuck would you feel compelled to tell the truth online

R30 to be perfectly honest with you, its because I'm too dumb to lie and not fuck it up. Telling the truth means not having to remember what lies I told before and having to keep any new lies consistent with the ones I already told.

by Anonymousreply 34August 8, 2025 3:10 PM

R3, it's amazing how much this board has changed over the past decade or so. Now the very idea of someone on DataLounge doing anything other than watching old television shows seems suspect.

We don't have Elaborate Scenario Trolls anymore because we barely even have scenarios.

by Anonymousreply 35August 8, 2025 3:15 PM

[quote] I agree that [t]hey should be separate. It’s unfortunate that the line between the two is now practically non-existent.

Not true. There are partisan propagandists posing as journalists, but they are concentrated in a few “news” organizations which are easy enough to avoid for anyone interested in objective reporting. Most journalists are still adhering to their professional standards even if people have political motivations for discrediting them.

by Anonymousreply 36August 8, 2025 3:16 PM

We hounded the ESTs out. Most people here used to play along, but the EST detectives made being an EST no fun.

He isn’t?

by Anonymousreply 39August 8, 2025 4:26 PM

So true R35, I stopped posting anything about past sexual exploits. Invariably some housebound gnome would post to tell everyone that I’m lying.

by Anonymousreply 40August 8, 2025 4:41 PM

Joni Mitchell reviews all of my posts before I submit them to ensure they are true. ("Hi" from Joni.)

by Anonymousreply 41August 8, 2025 4:53 PM

I was molested.

by Anonymousreply 42August 8, 2025 4:59 PM

r32 "it’s literally true. "

Oh, brother.

by Anonymousreply 43August 8, 2025 6:20 PM

Regarding R23 from another thread, it is EXTREMELY rare that an IN PROGRESS FLIGHT is diverted due to threats made by a passenger. If it happened, there is a news story somewhere about it. It is not an every day occurrence.

by Anonymousreply 44August 8, 2025 6:28 PM

I get the frustration OP. My favorite ones to hate on are always the “I actually KNOW/have worked with/best friend knows/has worked with them” types. No matter what it is, some asshole is going to claim that they know one of the victims, worked with or know the celebrity, etc..

by Anonymousreply 46August 8, 2025 7:39 PM

OP, what does your spidy sense tell you - is this class DL thread a lie?

Do people even read, or just post?

by Anonymousreply 51August 8, 2025 8:46 PM

OP has never seen gay men being overly dramatic? Need a mirror?

by Anonymousreply 52August 8, 2025 8:49 PM

R47 i don't remember that thread but I laughed so hard this time I almost choked myself to unaliveness.

I really hope someone has archived this entire board

by Anonymousreply 53August 8, 2025 9:12 PM

R47, of course that post is fabricated bullshit.

But that post is not what I am talking about and you know it.

by Anonymousreply 54August 9, 2025 6:52 PM

Sorry R28, but I have you blocked, so I did not see your post.

But yes, you are correct. R23 is conveniently retrofitting his story to the news article posted. Obviously.

My point stands.

by Anonymousreply 55August 9, 2025 6:54 PM

The CNN story describes an incident that led to a delay of 1 hour and 45 minutes for the diverted passengers.

Meanwhile, R23 from the other thread reported "an emergency stop which added another 4 hrs to an already awful flight."

1 hour, 45 minutes does not equal 4 hours.

So no, I don't believe R23. And you are a gullible idiot for believing him too.
