Is Hollywood becoming too woke? There were so many black extras and even a larger black woman in a lead role with her name in the credits. It just seems like an agenda. I’m not racist and will even sit next to blacks in the subway.

Breaking! Crawford/Tone Divorce hits a Snag!!

Superior Judge Benjamin J. Scheinman yesterday declined to divorce Joan Crawford from Franchot Tone in absentee proceedings. His action completely upset the two players' preparations for a dinner last night in which they planned celebration of their divorce.

ACTION POSTPONED

What had been "an eve of divorce preview" in one of New-York's glamorous night spots at an early hour yesterday turned out to be just another night.

The judge postponed action on the divorce trial until April 18, indicating that Miss Crawford should be present. Her attorney is to confer with Miss Crawford as to whether the date suits the actress' convenience.

JUDGE COMMENTS

Miss Crawford's movie-stage stand-in, Kasha Haroldi, once her sister-in-law, was in the courtroom ready to stand in for the actress but the move did not work out that way In the court drama.

Commenting on the unusual proposal that the trial proceed with neither the plaintiff nor defendant present and with only a deposition from the plaintiff arid her corroborating witness present, Judge Scheinman said:

"This is a question of policy to which I have given some serious thought. In the absence of any extraordinary circumstances, I believe the plaintiff in the case should be present."

DIVORCE TO GO ON

After a night of "Eye of Divorce" celebrating, Crawford and Tone left the New York night spot early yesterday and a reporter remarked to them: "Maybe the divorce will be called off?"

"No," replied Miss Crawford, "It will not be called off!"

Later in the day, when the news of the Los Angeles judge's denial had reached her, she declined to make any statement other than that she wished to confer with her attorney before speaking further about the matter.

The divorce complaint, was filed last February. Miss Crawford asked for her freedom on the grounds of extreme mental cruelty.

Has anyone been ready this new "comic book" called Action Comics.

It features an immigrant from another planet who gets special powers here on Earth. And he apparently has some left wing agenda going on about protecting people's safety.

This so-called "Superman" as he's been named is bound to be a FLOP. By 1940, no one will remember him. But nonetheless, I've started a petition to ban the character in America.

We don't need such ideas infecting the minds of our children -- an IMMIGRANT with special POWERS and a left wing agenda!

Good lord, this "super-hero" nonsense is spreading. TLast year, they did a comic about an illigeal immigrant from another planet who has special powers on Earth. They called him "Superman,"

Now they're debuting a "comic book" about a "super-hero" named "Batman." He's some sort of masked vigilante with an ax to grind. Takes the law into his own hands.

Both these "heroes" will be forgotten in a year's time. Both have FLOP written all over them.

But we need to make sure they don't keep coming up with "super-heroes!" One of them might be successful and think of all that damage that will happen if that occurs!

THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Next thing you know, they children who read this drivel will start thinking they can get super powers too. We've got to stop this. Sign the petition to ban all "super-heroes."

Am I the only gentleman who sneaks dabs of Mother’s perfume? I simply adore Tabu—so modern, so utterly intoxicating. If I’m quite sure she’s off at her bridge club or lunching uptown, I’ll anoint myself discreetly with that oriental aphrodisiac before heading downtown.

And unless my senses deceive me, I distinctly caught a trace of Chanel wafting from Bobbie Lehman’s rather fine naked form at the Yale Club pool the other day. Frankly, a timid choice from Bobbie, who is otherwise a very impressive specimen of manhood.

Do you suppose the day will ever come when men and women alike might wear whatever perfume pleases them—without whisper or raised brow?

My dear sir, R177, you’re not mad. I too once detected the faintest whiff of Cuir de Russie on Bobbie in the billiard room at the Metropolitan Club. It is the most decadently masculine of Coco’s compositions: leather, tobacco, just a trace of something animal.

Speaking of animals, my less-than-dear friend Nancy Cunard (WHET?) once dragged me to tea in Prince Yusupov’s Paris lodgings. His cramped library reeks—and I use that term with reverence—of Cuir de Russie. The Prince swore Beaux originally created it bespoke for his own teen skin, to complement his languid, ice-blue eyes and his magnificent black Tahitian pearl collier de chien, which he wore when receiving intimately at the Moika Palace.

Of course, they were surely more significant than anything poor Princess Irina ever managed. That Yusupov: what a character. Have any of you had him?

There’s a brassy old gal Amanda in the steno pool down where I work at McMahon, Latham and Sons. We’ve been nonchalantly timing our Phillip Morris breaks together so we can dish the office gossip. After I probably complimented her one too many times on her fragrance, she relented and brought me in a small vial: it’s from Lanvin, and they call it My Sin. Have you ever heard of something so delicious? I’ve started putting a dab on each wrist after my cigarette breaks before going in to handle Mr. Latham’s correspondence. He clearly finds My Sin as bedeviling as Mildred and me. If I didn’t know better I’d say that Mr. Latham has started carrying a gun in his trouser pocket.

by Anonymousreply 201July 15, 2025 2:45 AM

R198 oh no not the Nieuw Amsterdam. That ship is spotless. The Dutch are obsessive, even compulsive about cleaning. As if it were some sort of disorder Dr. Freud dreamed up. Not to mention that’s the boat Bucky Jarrett, of the Lake Forest Jarretts, was shipped off to Europe on after his debauchery with a caddie at Onwentsia. A drop never would have made it to the floor with him around. I hear his parents set him up with an apartment on Lake Shore Drive, about 3600 North , near Wrigkey Field. No load that Nancy boy won’t take.

I just returned from a brief trip to New York, where I saw The Man Who Came to Dinner, and the latest Jerome Kern tuner, Very Warm For May. There was one really good song in the latter, "All In Fun," but the rest of the score (and show) was a snooze. I'm sure Kern and Hammerstein will do better with their next show!

The play was really funny. I went to the stage door to collect a few autographs afterward, and ended up having a nice conversation with a charming young actor named Gordon Merrick who played the son. He seemed disenchanted with acting, and talked about taking up writing. He was a bit cagey about the kinds of stories he wanted to tell, but invited me to join him for lunch the next day to continue the conversation. Sadly, I had to catch my train home the next morning so I guess I'll never know...
