Jake Tapper book: Joe Biden failed to recognise George Clooney … who was shaken to his core!

At a June 2024 fundraiser for the Biden presidential campaign, Joe Biden did not recognize longtime friend George Clooney.

In the new book “Original Sin,” excerpted in The New Yorker, CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson tell the story of the Biden White House’s ultimately failed attempt to control the story around his advanced age and his faculties. As the story indeed broke open following the disastrous June 27, 2024 debate between Biden and Donald Trump, Clooney’s July 10 New York Times op-ed calling for Biden to quit the race was a milestone in how bluntly it described the president’s decline.

The New Yorker: How Joe Biden Handed the Presidency to Donald Trump

At a fateful event last summer, Barack Obama, George Clooney, and others were stunned by Biden’s weakness and confusion. Why did he and his advisers decide to conceal his condition from the public and campaign for reëlection?

Hey Jake, there are bigger threats going on in the world right now. Fuck off.

by Anonymousreply 2May 13, 2025 10:40 PM

Why is the New Yorker so boring now? They used to print interesting things, now dried up political news.

by Anonymousreply 3May 13, 2025 10:43 PM

How could this have been a shock to anyone?

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2025 10:48 PM

Snitches get stitches, Tapper.

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2025 10:54 PM

Nobody ‘handed’ the presidency to Trump, and I’m tired of this narrative that him winning the election was the fault of anybody but those who voted for him. The fucker ran against an infinitely more qualified opponent, and still most of the people who voted couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a woman, or a brown woman, or a woman with a laugh. They’re the ones that handed Trump the election. Blame them.

Fuck you, Jake Tapper.

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2025 10:55 PM

This is disappointing on so many levels. Things could have been vastly different if exposed in a more timely way.

by Anonymousreply 9May 13, 2025 10:57 PM

There’s no real evidence that Biden is somehow demented or heading that way. It’s all nonsense pushed by the right

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2025 10:58 PM

Ok Tapper, great work on investigating an 80 year old man. Now do Trump

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2025 11:12 PM

That's what pissed off Clooney, imagine not being recognized...the horror.

by Anonymousreply 15May 13, 2025 11:17 PM

Et tu, Georgius?

[quote]Clooney delivers some of Murrow’s famed 1958 speech “Wires and Lights in a Box,” warning that television “can teach, it can illuminate; yes, and even it can inspire. But it can do so only to the extent that humans are determined to use it to those ends.”

[quote]What follows is a montage of television clips suggesting the medium’s evolution—or devolution—since Murrow gave that speech, from the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to … Democrats vouching for President Biden’s acuity.

[quote]Clooney said it was important to him and his team to include what he saw as misleading testimonials about Biden. “We had to do it,” he said, to underline the importance of speaking truth to power no matter which party currently rules. Also, he acknowledged, lies serve as an important reminder for anyone in the audience upset about the current state of affairs. Democrats deceived the country about Biden’s abilities and, Clooney said, “that’s how Trump won.”

by Anonymousreply 16May 13, 2025 11:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 22May 14, 2025 12:30 AM

[quote]He's always had a stutter.

During his 4 years as VP and later campaigning for the Presidency, I never remember talk about a stutter. Or seeing him stutter during that time.

The talk of "Joe Biden's stutter" came out of the blue much later. And go back to videos of his earlier days, he was a smooth talker.

[quote] After writing the op-ed, Clooney sent it to media mogul and Democratic megadonor Jeffrey Katzenberg, who had attended sessions of Biden’s debate prep. “Your process is not the correct one to get the end you desire, [Katzenberg] told Clooney. He really wanted Clooney to cut the line about the befogged Biden at the fundraiser being ‘the same man we all witnessed at the debate.'”

Katzenberg didn’t want it mentioned that they had already seen the dementia-riddled Biden at the fundraiser. Everyone wanted to pretend that the debate was the first time they had seen Biden so mentally impaired. The donors, the campaign people, the WH staff, all corrupt.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2025 12:54 AM

Meanwhile, Trump is falling asleep at meetings and Jake Tapper doesn't care

[quote]Katzenberg didn’t want it mentioned that they had already seen the dementia-riddled Biden at the fundraiser. Everyone wanted to pretend that the debate was the first time they had seen Biden so mentally impaired. The donors, the campaign people, and the WH staff, all corrupt.

It's natural, not corrupt. Unless you are a hater or paid troll, I don't see the jump you are making. At most, people got glimpses of Biden, there was additional hearsay. Unfortunately, the powerful have a way of shutting down avenues of conversation, and the rest go along. It happens in corporations, PTA meetings, and even Boy Scout troops.

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2025 1:29 AM

CNN commentator who has a long history with Joe Biden said she saw him the day after the debate, and he attended 6 different events that day, and he was still doing fine in the evening when she saw him. The debate night he was apparently still jet lagged, had a bad cold, didn't sleep well the previous night, was on cold medication and was over rehearsed. Apparently there are factors that effect him and he gets tired and that becomes noticeable in his his reflexes. The night of the debate happened to be his worst case condition. Still, if the stress from the job effects him, he should have not run for 2024.

Am I understanding this correctly? To draw parallels with our present political moment, the play of Good Night and Good Luck cites ‘misleading testimonials’ about Biden’s mental acuity as a way to invite the audience to maybe perhaps gently interrogate the outright fucking lies of the current fascist president? Give me a fucking break. What a ludicrous and dangerous comparison.

George, the only ‘important reminder’ this provides is that actors are not the brightest of people; people with obscene amount of money should stay out of politics; and hell hath no fury than a closeted Hollywood queen who’s affronted that not everybody instantly knows who she is.

by Anonymousreply 57May 14, 2025 8:28 AM

I read the full New Yorker article at R1 and not recognizing George isn't as obnoxious as it sounds: George knew the Bidens for years and at this particular event, Biden would've been expected to greet him and clearly didn't know who he was - not as in a "your name slipped my mind" kind of way, but the kind of blank look your grandma in the nursing home gives you.

The article was terrible - how did it ever come to this - but at least it placed the blame at the feet of Biden & his people rather than yet another diatribe about how "no one liked Kamala!"

by Anonymousreply 58May 14, 2025 8:37 AM

Much of this book is powerful democratic fundraisers scapegoating Biden inner circle for deceiving them

This is unlikely

A more obvious explanation for what happened involves powerful fundraisers like Jeffrey Katzenberg and Haim Saban

The October attacks in Israel gave the Biden administration a quid pro quo with their major fundraisers, who are also major Israeli hawks

“You continue funding my campaign, and I will let Israel do whatever it wants”

The fundraisers were uneasy with Biden’s reelection bid because anyone with a brain could see he would not be reelected.

That is why they insisted he do an early debate. That way they could still dump him before the convention. He agreed and reneged on his word, and held out for weeks, damaging the party.

The people who keep saying “but Trump is this, Trump is that” are making bad faith arguments. It doesn’t matter; the election was a referendum on the party in power and Biden was unpopular.

There Bidenists who buttressed him on here - all olds - are now the ones saying that Trump was inevitable and no one could have defeated him. That is false, because look how unpopular he became within 100 days.

by Anonymousreply 59May 14, 2025 8:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 61May 14, 2025 9:17 AM

MEANWHILE, the current president is accepting AIRPLANES from Hamas-supporting countries. Really, Jake?

by Anonymousreply 62May 14, 2025 10:21 AM

Yes. Because Trump is a monster we can’t say anything bad about Biden. Biden should never have run for a second term. Open primaries should have picked the candidate not Biden. I’m not saying the outcome would been different though. It’s likely Trump would have won anyway. But it would have been better for the Democratic Party. Biden and RBG really screwed up their legacies by staying too long.

by Anonymousreply 63May 14, 2025 10:34 AM

R63 Un-huh. Meanwhile, it doesn’t strike you as biased for Tapper, one of the CURRENT lead anchors of a political news network, to write an investigative book accusing the Democrats of a cover-up, but NOT one about the CONSTANT cover-ups by the Trump administration and his Republican lackeys? For YEARS?

"Only an actor would pretend Affairs of State are his latest play."

Not sure paraphrased Tim Rice constitutes a universal definition of a wise man but it is the 2020s, accuracy is sort of like dial up.

by Anonymousreply 72May 14, 2025 11:55 AM

I believe that the majority of Pres. Biden's desire to run for a 2nd term was promoted heavily to him by his wife. All she had to do was say "you can do it Joe" and he would have automatically believed he had the stamina to do it.

by Anonymousreply 73May 14, 2025 11:59 AM

I don't care if President Biden was a drooling, sundowning mess. He was surrounded by intelligent people who were doing a great job. Here is the bottom line: Joe Biden was the only one who beat Trump, and that record remains undefeated. Eight million Biden voters stayed at home this past cycle. No one knows why, maybe it was because Joe wasn't on the ticket?

Maybe stop caring about actors' opinions about politics. Maybe stop latching onto the next person who gives a good speech. Maybe stop allowing yourselves to be played by republicans every single time. As we have clearly seen, this election had nothing to do with the economy, the President's age, or mental capacity.

by Anonymousreply 74May 14, 2025 12:08 PM

[quote] still most of the people who voted couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a woman, or a brown woman, or a woman with a laugh. They’re the ones that handed Trump the election. Blame them

Or because they couldn’t bring themselves to vote for a woman who should have been the incumbent, but stood by and allowed a senile old man to remain president while people other than her apparently ran the country. Not only did she collude in the deception, but those who usurped the president’s powers didn’t trust her enough to be acting president while Biden was in office. Why would people trust her to be the actual president?

by Anonymousreply 75May 14, 2025 12:09 PM

[quote] I don't care if President Biden was a drooling, sundowning mess. He was surrounded by intelligent people who were doing a great job.

Maybe intelligent, definitely corrupt people who were the ones who cockblocked a black female with a laugh.

Most people want to know the president is. They don’t want unknown, unelected “intelligent people” doing the job they elected someone else for.

People gripe about Trump overstepping his authority (and they should), but somehow don’t seem to realize how horrifying Biden’s debate performance was to people who were previously assuming that the guy who got elected was the guy running the country.

by Anonymousreply 76May 14, 2025 12:16 PM

That’s bullshit, if you vote for a president thinking it is the president alone who administers the nation then you are a complete fool

by Anonymousreply 77May 14, 2025 12:20 PM

That’s not the issue, R77. It’s the intentional, long term deception. You can disagree with the magnitude of the sin (personally, I think it was very, very bad) and I can’t quantify the number of people who were unable to bring themselves to vote for Harris because of it, but there were some and I suspect it was a very material number.

The republicans aren’t making more of this because Trump’s age and mental status make it less useful now and because they are saving it to use an ammunition in the next election. Even if the democrats run someone young (which they should), that individual will be targeted as the Manchurian Candidate.

Better strategy would be to be a little more open about it now and maybe sacrifice some lambs while there are still 3 years left and equate it with Reagan. Make both instances seem like ancient history by 2028.

by Anonymousreply 78May 14, 2025 12:37 PM

Why the fuck would George fucking Clooney, a lifelong a loyal progressive all of a sudden want to sabotage the Dems. Why would these people keep pursuing the presidency. Why why why. How much power do you need. Why. Why couldn’t they do the right thing. It’s just crazy. This is all their fault.

But guess what the ironic thing is. TRUMP STILL WON. Goddamn Biden bastards. They are anti American.

Most people saw it. We just recognized there was no other option you shouldn’t flatter yourself that you do much smarter than everyone else.

THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PRIMARY --ASSHOLE JOE SHOULD HAVE NOT RUN AT ALL IN 2024

[quote]Look at the mess we’re in now

Not Joe Biden's fault. Not Kamala's either. A lot of people stayed at home this election, and they are to blame.

by Anonymousreply 96May 14, 2025 6:35 PM

R95 to be fair Joe meeting Clooney was not like Joe meeting an old friend. That was a big part of the problem. You tend to recognize your old friends.

by Anonymousreply 97May 14, 2025 6:40 PM

R96 yes a senile old man who should have never been running had to drop out and is replaced at a late date by Harris , who had never won a primary, and who was previously on record as saying that trans care should be provided by the taxpayers for federal prisoners.

And we are going to blame the voters

by Anonymousreply 98May 14, 2025 6:46 PM

R96 It WAS Biden's fault. Despite all his policies and accomplishments, he failed to do the #1 task he was elected to do, protect this country!

Drumpf (and many GOP senators, congress, etc) got away with crimes of treason that, 100 years ago, would have gotten them the death penalty. You can't blame Merrick Garland for not doing his job (which he didn't!), because ultimately, Biden could have replaced him but didn't!

"Let's just vote him out!" (remember that, still makes my blood boil!)

The Orange Turd should never have been allowed to run. That's Biden's fault. Fuck! Remember that debate in 2020 when a Covid-stricken Drumpf was deliberately coughing in Biden's direction? We later learned, Drumpf KNEW he had Covid. Biden could have pressed charges for attempted murder.

I was very much in Biden's corner. I even tried to give him leverage. That ended when I saw this photo.

R99 here. I also used to be in Jake Tapper's corner. Now I think he's a POS !!

by Anonymousreply 100May 14, 2025 6:54 PM

R96 is hilarious. It's like the Principal Skinner meme with these clowns. "Democrats keep losing elections! Is it the Democrats fault? No, it must be the voters!"

Voters don't owe anyone a vote. People aren't showing up for Democrats because they don't feel like the Democratic party serves their needs, and it doesn't. The DNC leadership is far too busy sucking off AIPAC and the 1% to care about anyone besides themselves and their cronies.

by Anonymousreply 101May 14, 2025 7:01 PM

But voters who are stupid deserve ridiculous and don’t deserve to complain about the consequences of their actions

by Anonymousreply 102May 14, 2025 7:11 PM

Some people talk as though Joe Biden has gone senile. He hasn't. There is some noticeable slowness in physical movement and response. He's obviously not as sharp mentally in 2024 as he was in 2020. I saw my uncle who is age 83 during the Christmas holidays who I hadn't seen in about 2 1/2 years and he was in similar condition of physical slowness. His cognition seems basically the same he just responds to stimuli and people slower.

by Anonymousreply 103May 14, 2025 7:15 PM

[quote] Not Joe Biden's fault. Not Kamala's either. A lot of people stayed at home this election, and they are to blame.

Biden and Harris had nothing to do with those people staying home? Those voters all randomly and coincidentally had other stuff they’d rather do that day?

He’s a POS for many reasons, but certainly for being part of the coverup and now trying to pretend that he wasn’t.

Mayo:

Symptoms of mild cognitive impairment, also known as MCI, include trouble with memory, language and judgment. The symptoms are more serious than the memory issues that are expected as people get older. But the symptoms don't affect daily life at work or at home.

The brain, like the rest of the body, changes with age. Many people notice they become more forgetful as they age. It may take longer to think of a word or to recall a person's name. But if concerns with memory go beyond what's expected, the symptoms may be due to mild cognitive impairment.

People with MCI may have symptoms that include:

Forgetting things more often. Missing appointments or social events. Losing their train of thought. Or not following the plot of a book or movie. Trouble following a conversation. Trouble finding the right word or with language. Finding it hard to make decisions, finish a task or follow instructions. Trouble finding their way around places they know well. Poor judgment. Changes that are noticed by family and friends.

by Anonymousreply 108May 14, 2025 10:38 PM

Mayo: The main difference between MCI and dementia comes down to how folks are functioning in day-to-day tasks. People with MCI are still pretty independent with their daily functioning. They usually are still driving, cooking, paying bills, and taking care of the house. Some are even still working. They may use systems, strategies, or other aides (like a pill organizer) to keep themselves independent.

People with dementia, on the other hand, have cognitive difficulties that have progressed to the point that they interfere with the person being able to be independent in her daily life. Therefore, they may have family members or healthcare assistance who administer their medications to them, do the cooking, and/or provide transportation. A person with dementia typically would not be able to hold down a job.

In addition, people with MCI may have only one area of thinking difficulty (often memory), with normal thinking abilities in other domains. People with dementia usually have global cognitive impairment or problems in multiple cognitive domains.

by Anonymousreply 109May 14, 2025 10:40 PM

My cousin who has been a physician and a surgeon for 30 years now told me after the debate that he things Biden may have some mild cognitive progression, but it doesn't look serious or even moderate.

by Anonymousreply 110May 14, 2025 10:44 PM

R91 Right. I’m starting to think the Biden is ok trolls are the real Russian operatives.

It is NOT OK for him to not remember George fucking Clooney. Clooney will forever be a patriot for what he did. If you don’t understand that this revelation confirms that his mind was deteriorating and that makes him NOT fit to be president, then you must just be ignorant or mentally ill yourself.

by Anonymousreply 111May 14, 2025 10:52 PM

R3 Because they should that’s why. Maybe it’s time for a 3rd party.

by Anonymousreply 112May 14, 2025 10:54 PM

R2 But the bigger threats exist now because of what played out then. Are you ignorant?

by Anonymousreply 113May 14, 2025 10:54 PM

My parents were like that until their final health events got them. They didn't need live-in help, even my mom on her own at 82, but the decline was obvious. Couldn't follow conversations and couldn't watch narrative shows like sitcoms or dramas. Forget movies. My mom watched nothing but talk shows and my dad loved reality shows. They both LOOOVED game shows.

They were forgetful, too. Never like a dementia patient, not getting up at midnight to get dressed and go to "work" type of forgetful, not even "leaving stove burners on" type of thing, thank god. But they missed a lot of doctor's appointments, and forgot to refill prescriptions, and let their car registration lapse (both drove well into their 80s and wouldn't quit until a doctor told them to).

But we had to start managing their healthcare for them. Meanwhile they paid the bills (they lived for the mail delivery and of course it was all offline), got haircuts, went shopping, ate out all the time, and remembered birthdays, etc. They functioned day to day but they needed a lot of "checking in on" and the like.

No one in that state should be working at all, they should be enjoying what's left of their "golden years." They certainly should't be running the country!

by Anonymousreply 114May 14, 2025 10:54 PM

[quote]I’m starting to think the Biden is ok trolls are the real Russian operatives.

Their work here was done on November 6, 2024. That's not to say they won't be back.

Jake "I'll never stop tearing apart Dems and will allow Republican lies to go unchecked" Tapper needs to go away - permanently.

So the fuck what? Old news and it doesn't change anything.

Meanwhile bribery and corruption is going on before our very eyes.

I hate Jake Tapper and his defense of "well, it's about access" - well FUCK the access to Republicans and don't put them on ANY shows then. If they're just going to lie, who cares?

by Anonymousreply 116May 14, 2025 11:05 PM

Tapper and Thompson write that White House aides who once had regular access to Biden would go months without seeing him. At some meetings, others noticed that Biden “would occasionally be mumbling and not making much sense,” according to the authors.

“I don’t think he has dementia,” said a Cabinet secretary, according to the authors. “But the thing is, he’s an old man. The president can give you four to six good hours a day. When he got tired, sloppy isn’t the right word, but his guard was down.”

“For months, we didn’t have access to him. There was clearly a deliberate strategy by the White House to have him meet with as few people as necessary,” another Cabinet secretary told the authors.

“At one rare meeting during that time,” the secretary “was shocked by how the president was acting. He seemed ‘disoriented’ and ‘out of it,’ his mouth agape.”

by Anonymousreply 118May 15, 2025 12:03 AM

When the red wave of 2022 didn’t happen that would’ve been a wonderful time for Biden to announce he wasn’t running for re election. He could’ve framed it beautifully as passing the torch and focusing on the next generation of the party. Open primaries would’ve got Kennedy out of there early and cut trumps press coverage down significantly and focused it on his criminal trials and not his rallies.

R117 if the senior staff was hiding Joe to keep others from knowing I’d have no problem with the DoJ going after them, because they were not just hiding him , if true , they ran him again for president.

Their one mistake—-agreeing to the debate.

Lock em up ——if true.

Why is OP greyed out? I linked directly to the Variety story??

by Anonymousreply 122May 15, 2025 9:17 AM

R87 Are you talking about Jake Tapper? Of CNN? Because he's NEVER been positive about Biden.

Are you sure you know what you're talking about?

by Anonymousreply 123May 15, 2025 10:06 AM

R122 because it’s the DL. You expected something different?

R122 I REALLY don't understand how or why so many innocuous threads are grayed out

by Anonymousreply 125May 15, 2025 10:20 AM

R125 Because at DL we are not pussies who censor thoughts like that scum maga does. We tolerate and encourage free speech here at DL.

by Anonymousreply 126May 15, 2025 11:17 AM

You're greyed out because Blue MAGAs hate all criticism of Dear Leader Biden, the Great and MIGHTY.

by Anonymousreply 127May 15, 2025 12:24 PM

It's really beginning to get sickening how some people on the right are trying to make Joe Biden out some sort of criminal just because he got old and mentally feeble. Sure, they did wrong by trying to keep him in the race, but that was more the people around him. Some people really do want to make him suffer even more for getting old. At this point we have far greater problems to deal with than Joe Biden.

by Anonymousreply 128May 15, 2025 12:32 PM

Some, not me, refer to them as Progressives Nazis , And doing what Nazis always do,

I get confused because at one time progressives were anti thought and word control and censorship. Now they censor like the Catholic Church did back in the 1950s.

by Anonymousreply 129May 15, 2025 12:36 PM

R128 I think it’s the senior staff that hid Biden being old and far too feeble that might risk criminal charges if any are ever made. Joe , investigators already claimed in an official report , was an old man who did not remember stuff well anymore. .

by Anonymousreply 130May 15, 2025 12:45 PM

OP, you could have offended Biden fans, Clooney fans, Tapper fans - maybe even Trump fans.

by Anonymousreply 131May 15, 2025 2:31 PM

R130. Geez. Give up your weird and ignorant fantasies of criminal charges.

by Anonymousreply 132May 15, 2025 3:46 PM

Some members of former President Joe Biden’s Cabinet did not believe that he could be relied upon to perform at 2 a.m. during an emergency by the final year of his presidency, according to a new book from CNN’s Jake Tapper and Axios’ Alex Thompson.

Several secretaries told the authors that Biden’s inner circle grew so small in 2023 and 2024 that even members of his Cabinet weren’t included.

“Access dropped off considerably in 2024, and I didn’t interact with him as much,” said one Cabinet secretary, who explained that instead of briefing Biden, the secretary would brief other senior White House aides, who then briefed the president.

The Cabinet member thought it was strange and wondered if it was a way of filtering out particular information and directing Biden’s decision-making, according to the book.

“Yes, the president is ‘making the decisions,’ but if the inner circle is shaping them in such a way, is it really a decision? Are they leading him to something?” the Cabinet secretary wondered.

The new book, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” is being released on May 20. The book documents how Biden, his closest aides and his family forged ahead with the former president’s doomed 2024 reelection bid despite signs of his physical and mental decline.

Reminds me of Hillary Clinton's memorable and much-parodied "3 a.m. phone call" ad from her 2008 campaign.

Seriously, ignorance is bliss. If we'd known how perilously, finger-near-the-button close we've probably been to total disaster under Trump 2017-2021* or had been aware of the "lights are on in the White House but nobody's home" situation during Biden 2021-2025, we'd all have run screaming/hid under the bed.

*Seemingly, he had to be restrained by "his" generals on more than one occasion
