Illinois restaurant owner threatens to ‘slap the s–t out of’ customer who didn’t tip
An Illinois restaurant owner was caught on video closely following a customer down the street and chastising them, furious that they didn’t leave a tip on their $20 meal.
The heated showdown exploded outside ramen shop Table to Stix in downtown Evanston on Saturday, April 19, when owner Kenny Chou turned the quiet block into a battleground, storming after the diner in a now-viral video.
Chou sprinted after the unidentified customer who left a $20 bill to cover his $19.89 meal with no additional tip, calling him a “piece of s–t.”

The customer questioned why Chou continued to follow him down the street. Chou responded with “18%,” the tip amount he expected to be given.
“I paid for my food. I handed you $20. You cannot charge more than what you paid, so what are you talking about?” the customer said in the wild clip.
“What do you want? I paid for my food!” the man repeats as Chou trails him.
As the video continues and Chou does not stop following the customer, the annoyed customer demands that Chou “get the f–k back,” asking that he call the police if he wants to escalate the situation.
The owner berated the customer and threatened to get the police involved until the customer snapped back: “I paid for my food. I paid you $20. I am not legally required to give you a f–king tip.”
A belligerent Chou shrieked, “I’ll smack the s–t out of you, you punka– s–thead.”
“Shut your goddam f–king mouth. How are my staff supposed to make money? I’ll slap the s–t out of you!” he continued to yell.

It happened again? Go figure.

You don't go negative when that happens. You place signs and narratives in your establishment and online that encourage customers to tip.

The customer is right here.
Tipping is not a requirement.
That's why it's called A GRATUITY.
I noticed that a lot of korean and chinese restaurants actually add on a 20% tip at the end of your bill, without your permission.
That is fucking illegal.
Tipping is an option. If you want to charge more, then put it in the prices on your menu.
Don't "trick" customers into thinking something is a certain price, and then requiring them to pay more at the very end.
That is a deceptive business practice, and it's against the law.

I ate at a new restaurant the other day. There were 4 of us. I saw no signage, the server did not tell/warn us - but they added a 20% gratuity - and really bad service. I was so mad. I asked them to take it off, and I would be happy to give 10% for the service. I could not believe they auto added gratuity for a party of 4!

You PAY THEM, greedy cunt!
It's not the customer's responsibility to pay your employees.

R6 can capitalize all of her pissy point about gratuities, but she wouldn't capitalize "Korean" and "Chinese."
Perhaps avoiding East Asian - perhaps all - restaurants would be something both she and restaurant workers would be better served.
The poster's underlying bias seems evident, undermining the limited worth of R6's simplistic, seal-barking opinion.

This is outrageous and bad for business.

Indeed, R8. I meant R5, with apologies to R6. R6's note about a lack of appropriate signage is right, despite a trend toward a minimum "tip" for parties of 4. Assuming I am seeing the numerals right.
I have numeric dyslexia (honestly). And a career in statistics (honestly).

I don't think Mr. Chou was going to be slapping the shit out of anyone with those little, little hands.
But he's rather cute!
Twenty percent? I'd give him the whole hundred.

I can't figure out from the article if this was take-out or a sit down restaurant with servers. My attitude about it changes a lot based on the answer to that question.

Mr. Chou should expect a visit from ICE.

[quote] Nabors read a letter from the patron’s mother addressed to Chou, asking him to imagine the patron had been his own son.
[quote] “Would you want criminal charges put upon that person? It is to this logical and evidential extent that you should be held to the applicable and justified legal standards for your action,” the letter read.
The fuck? Mary!!!

Tipping is crazy in the US.
20% is the new 15%, no, make that 25%, no, make that 30% -- at least 30%.
That would be bad enough but now it's some badge of courage to throw tip money around like a gangster to mark what an exceptional person you are, helping the little person and all that. It's more sanctimonious than people who go off on shopping carts in grocery store parking lots as the great marker, sorting the Quality sorts from the Trash.
The system of leaving it to the customer to compensate the people who take your order and bring your food and clear the table and collect payment for the restaurant is fucking nuts. It's also nuts to think that some waiters should be lucky to make less than minimum wage for this service while others should bring home wads of $100 bills for a less strenuous but better heeled version of the same.
Pay waiters a decent salary and leaving tipping off the equation, or leave it to be at most a modest and unexpected bonus.

If I pick up an order myself from a restaurant, I'll drop $1 or $2 in the tip jar. If I eat in and the service is good I tip 20-25%. The same for a delivery order.

I was disappointed to see the tip was 25% already added on to our bill And then there was subtle requests for a tip. WTF America??? Im afraid to ask anyone for anything cos of tipping. Icecream or coffee they expected a dollar.

A certain restaurant in New York automatically adds 20% tip. We were a party of 4. The service was lousy, the food was lukewarm, and the waiter was inattentive. He was young and just stood in a few spots, doing nothing. He was pleasant, but lazy. If he was attentive, I would’ve tipped him more.

We live in a country where tips are expected. Tip or cook your own food. Too many cheapskates.

Pay waiters a respectable wage and stop the table side theatre begging for tips, and stop blaming the customers and guilting them to over tip to make up for those who tip less.
Nobody would put up with this shit for any occupation other than food and drink servers.
Tips should be optional for something exceptional.

Once again lazy, cheap shits and the assholes who defend them find a career in shaming an Asian worker for perpetrating an unfortunate slapstick stereotype.
Ladies and gentlemen, if you expect to be treated like respected merchants, avoid any area that is "diverse" and/or full of students.

He was not a "worker," but rather a business owner.
Expound on your premise further, please, r44, with a financial cost/benefit analysis, including the shame this merchant brought upon his own "business."
He clearly is telling Evanston that enjoying lunch on his premises may become intersected with unprovoked belligerence. Who the fuck would want to eat at that establishment?
