The White Lotus Season 3 Part 8

Part 7

by Anonymousreply 604April 7, 2025 2:44 AM

People didn’t “miss’ that no one cared. It just wasn’t much of a payoff. Why bother with the character at all? Just because people are used to the manager being a character?

by Anonymousreply 1March 31, 2025 4:27 PM

When did Scott Glenn get so fucking old? I kept hoping it was because of a great make-up artist.

by Anonymousreply 2March 31, 2025 4:28 PM

Why bother with the character? Because he's the fucking manager, that's why. Can't have a White Lotus season without featuring the manager. And Mike White said in the past this season wouldn't focus on that person as much and this was his jokey way of delivering on that "promise" – all that buildup and then cutting away after three seconds. I thought it was hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 3March 31, 2025 4:33 PM

Last season was always going to be hard to live up to.

With one episode left I think we can safely say this has been a disappointment. Saxon has turned into a more interesting character this episode (7) but there isn't enough racetrack left to allow that to play out.

Sritala is a ladyboy. Is that going ro be the big reveal?

by Anonymousreply 4March 31, 2025 4:33 PM

r2 He looked ancient already on the Daredevil show back in 2015, but they did great with the body double, so the fighting looked seamless.

I couldn't help but stare at his numerous forearm veins, I guess that'll happen to all the gym rats eventually.

by Anonymousreply 5March 31, 2025 4:34 PM

[quote] Can't have a White Lotus season without featuring the manager.

Actually, we can.

We have the owners this year. We don’t need the manager and the point is he has been given very little to do.

by Anonymousreply 6March 31, 2025 4:35 PM

[quote]Last season was always going to be hard to live up to.

Apart from the Tanya stuff and the location shots, I didn't care for last season at all. So that's not a tall order for me personally.

by Anonymousreply 7March 31, 2025 4:35 PM

Unpopular opinion: this show is boring and overrated.

by Anonymousreply 8March 31, 2025 4:36 PM

Owners aren't flying around the resort taking orders from those high-end guests. For fuck sake, just stop.

by Anonymousreply 9March 31, 2025 4:36 PM

Thanks for sharing r8. Please come back and tell us every week.

by Anonymousreply 10March 31, 2025 4:37 PM

I don’t find anything Saxon did or said to be particularly interesting. He’s just being set up to be killed by his father. Both the wife and son just happen to say to the suicidal father “I’m nothing without your money.” Who talks like that?

by Anonymousreply 11March 31, 2025 4:38 PM

I want Aleksei to feed me like this, after he's fucked but before he's scammed me.

He was great in Shadow and Bone, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 12March 31, 2025 4:38 PM

So do you think the manager has been an interesting character given meaningful plot points?

by Anonymousreply 13March 31, 2025 4:39 PM

As has been stated a couple of times r13 the manager was a season-long set-up for a mean punchline, which culimnated with last night's hilarious cut-away - everything doesn't have to have MEANINGGGGGGGGGGGG you humorless slag

by Anonymousreply 14March 31, 2025 4:43 PM

So that’s a “no.”

by Anonymousreply 15March 31, 2025 4:44 PM

You don't understand the difference between main and recurring cast, do you?

by Anonymousreply 16March 31, 2025 4:46 PM

I'm actually surprised Saxon didn't agree to the odd 3-way. He came across as such a fraternity type pussyhound.

by Anonymousreply 17March 31, 2025 4:49 PM

I don’t care if he “main” or not. We spent a bunch of time focusing on his desire to perform and the payoff was lacking. I’m glad you enjoyed the fabulous joke. It’ seems about your speed.

by Anonymousreply 18March 31, 2025 4:50 PM

Episode seven was kind of unsettling and ominous. Rick seems like the obvious choice to be the one to die. Sritala's bodyguards will remember/recognize him at the resort, which will lead to an altercation. Gaitok will intervene and have to use the gun, which will later impress Mook and Sritala. The Russians will join in, thinking they've been caught. Chaos ensues.

Piper will decide not to stay at the monastery, and Loch will follow her. Again. Tim will think about poisoning everyone with the fruit (as hinted in the preview for the final episode), but will back off in the end. Again. Saxon will get his phone back and find out what's really going on. With Rick dead and Saxon's entire life destroyed, he and Chelsea will run off together.

Belinda being so ride or die for Tanya makes no sense. Belinda only knew her for a few days, and Tanya screwed her over. There's no reason for her to stay loyal.

One episode left, but I've seen enough to say this season has been a letdown. Not entirely a disappointment, just really underwhelming.

by Anonymousreply 19March 31, 2025 4:50 PM

Fabian dismissed Belinda’s concerns and fear, told her she’d “survive”, he doesn’t deserve any attention.

by Anonymousreply 20March 31, 2025 4:53 PM

Wouldn't Gwyneth Paltry be perfect as a rich, entitled bitch for Season 4? She even has her new face and it looks fab! Here's Gwynnie gassing on about balancing family with her storied movie career... and it's with VF, natch, not Redbook with Barbara Bennett!

by Anonymousreply 21March 31, 2025 4:56 PM

Way too on the nose. A big NO.

by Anonymousreply 22March 31, 2025 5:01 PM

She’d throw off the balance of the show, which is really an ensemble showcase for Hollywood B-listers and foreign actors, but I think it’d be way more fun to watch Goop play a slightly trashy, over-the-hill concierge who is desperate to become manager, but doomed to be overlooked.

by Anonymousreply 23March 31, 2025 5:13 PM

[quote] When did Scott Glenn get so fucking old? I kept hoping it was because of a great make-up artist.

According to wikipedia, Scott Glenn is somewhere between 83 and 87 years old.

He IS old.

by Anonymousreply 24March 31, 2025 5:36 PM

[QUOTE] Again, you not believing in monogamy has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BETRAYAL OF A FRIEND.

This Frau post from the end of the last thread had me howling.

by Anonymousreply 25March 31, 2025 5:36 PM

R19 Tanya didn’t totally fuck her over though. That was a nice stack of cash to give her as a consolation prize. I do credit the show for nuances like that that interject some ambiguity into people’s motivations.

by Anonymousreply 26March 31, 2025 5:39 PM

Scott’s character is probably grateful for Rick. Now he has something fun to do. He seemed like a guy totally bored with his life now that he’s at the top. He should go to the White Lotus himself and have a ‘chat’ with Rick.

How far away from Bangkok is the White Lotus? Do we know?

by Anonymousreply 27March 31, 2025 5:41 PM

My money is on Rick and possibly Chelsea being the murder victims. All other storylines will fall flat as there isn’t sufficient time left to give them much depth. It’s probably the worst of the three seasons. A lot of edging but very little payoff.

by Anonymousreply 28March 31, 2025 5:45 PM

Far enough that it took a plane ride for Rick to get to Bangkok.

by Anonymousreply 29March 31, 2025 5:45 PM

That Aleksei is a hot little piece. If I had my pick of the men this season, I’d take him. Wait, Zion first, then Aleksei.

by Anonymousreply 30March 31, 2025 5:46 PM

I really hope Chelsea doesn't die, but like others I have a bad feeling.

by Anonymousreply 31March 31, 2025 5:49 PM

Zion's eyes are so wide set. He looks like E.T.

by Anonymousreply 32March 31, 2025 5:50 PM

I'm a recent fan of the show.

I started binge watching Seasons 1 and 2, about a week after Season 3 started.

With that said, I really feel like this season has been a HUGE disappointment.

Even if the last episode turns out to be amazing, I would still consider this season (as a whole) to be a failure.

I understand that Mike White must be under a lot of pressure, with two very successful seasons under his belt, he's the toast of the town with the hottest show on television, MAX is probably throwing money at him, stars are clamoring to work with him, he's attending awards shows and winning awards, he's traveling the world, and he's probably on a major high.

Unfortunately, I think the pressure is getting to him. Especially considering that prior to 2020, he was a pretty obscure actor, writer, and reality tv personality. Now, he's VERY famous.

Overall, I'd have to say that the writing this season was very weak, with the exception of episodes one and six.

It almost seems like season three was a retread/mashup of the two previous seasons, except not as well written.

You know how in high school and college, when you have a paper due, and you rush at the last minute to get it done, but it's absolute crap?

Yeah, that's what this season felt like. Mike White got it done, but it wasn't great.

At this point, I think he needs to bite the bullet and realize that he could benefit from a team of writers, and not rely on himself to be the sole writer AND director of the show.

I understand that he wants the glory, but he can't do it all and still expect the quality to be good. Not after three seasons.

Parker Posey and Sam Rockwell were the only saving graces of this season. Without their comedic relief, this season would have been an absolute disaster.

I still don't care much about the three cougar friends. Their story just wasn't compelling. Even after the long awaited fight during dinner, they didn't go as far as I hoped. I thought it would be a knock down drag out (finally getting it all off their chests) type of insult hurling, nasty brawl. But instead, it was just a few insults hurled at each other, with one leaving the table, and the other two going to bed. It was beyond underwhelming.

I learned about as much about the Ratliff family after seven episodes, as I did in the first episode. Can anyone honestly say that after watching episode one, that there has been any major change in their story, or that you learned a lot more about them by episode seven? I can't.

Same for Gaitok and Mook. She was brushing him off in episode one, while he was pining for her. And by episode seven, it was the same thing.

Then there's the ridiculous scene with Frank and Rick at Sritala's home. Much like the interaction between them in episode six, they were woefully unprepared to handle her questions, and she was ridiculously buying all of their bullshit. Which is so stupid, considering how smart and savvy Sritala seemed to be in the first few episodes of the season. Frank's answers to her questions were completely ridiculous, and somehow, all she managed was a raised eyebrow? C'mon now.

And you want to talk about underwhelming? Rick's confrontation with his father's killer turned out to be just a big nothing burger. "Oh, I just looked at him and saw a frail, old man. So I pushed him over." After all the drama we saw him go through in the first four episodes? Ugh.

In the end, my guess is that after Rick pushed the old man over, he died from brain bleeding due to head trauma. Sritala is so distraught, she returns to the hotel and kills Rick. A perfectly ridiculous ending, to a perfectly ridiculous story line.

The only ones left are Greg and Belinda, and I don't know what other options there would be to resolve their story by episode eight, other than he kills her, or she takes the money and opens up her own spa.

As I said before, MAX needs to convince Mike White to hire a small team of writers. Otherwise, I don't see this show getting any better.

by Anonymousreply 33March 31, 2025 5:52 PM

Weren't both of the previous season finales of this show more than one hour long?

I've been a little disappointed with the writing this season too, but one thing Mike White is very good at is packing a lot of unexpected twists into season finales that settle the plotlines (unless he wants to continue them the next season).

The only thing I feel safe predicting is that since the preview for the final episode purposefully seems to make you believe Timothy is going to put the poisonous fruit in the blender, it won't be used to kill his family. That doesn't mean his family will all necessarily survive, but I doubt they will die of poisoned shakes.

by Anonymousreply 34March 31, 2025 5:53 PM

Jacklyn didn't fuck over Laurie! Frau. You snooze you lose.

Zion, Valentin, Alexei, the other Russian, Gaitok, Lochy, Rick, and Saxon can all get it.

by Anonymousreply 35March 31, 2025 5:53 PM

Aleksei, asking, no DEMANDING money after having sex, how sleezy and awful. I too had really delicious sex with a man like this that hit me up right after while I was still in coital glow!

by Anonymousreply 36March 31, 2025 5:57 PM

It would have been better/more realistic if he just asked for a thousand or two as his escort fee.

by Anonymousreply 37March 31, 2025 6:00 PM

Chelsea is a fun character, but the storyline with Rick has always been very dark.

It’s a classic “woman with low self esteem gets involved with scumbag because she thinks she can change him” storyline.

He treats her like shit.

He makes no effort to deal with his problems. He appears to be a shady operator, possibly dangerous.

He’s an idiot who goes around releasing snakes and stranding his girlfriend in a foreign country while he jets off to confront gangsters.,

I’ve been puzzled by viewers’ thinking they are good together. But this is what dangerously dysfunctional relationships look like. No one is 100% bad. They might have the occasional warm moment. But Rick is a mostly bad guy, and he’s bad for Chelsea.

If she ends up dead, it’s sadly a natural result of her being involved with Rick. The show has been pretty clear about this all season.

by Anonymousreply 38March 31, 2025 6:03 PM

Have you ever heard of writing in a concise manner, R33?

Jesus Christ.

by Anonymousreply 39March 31, 2025 6:04 PM

I keep wondering where Rick's money comes from--it is incredibly expensive to stay at the White Lotus for a week.

by Anonymousreply 40March 31, 2025 6:05 PM

[quote]stranding his girlfriend in a foreign country

[quote]He left her in a luxury hotel in the company of a friend, she was hardly alone in the middle of nowhere

We’re about to see just how stranded Chelsea is. I suspect once Sritala’s goons start closing in, she’ll turn out to be pretty stranded.

I’ll be very surprised if Rick isn’t taken out before he makes it back to Chelsea. If he makes it back, it’s almost impossible that the goons would allow them to leave in one piece.

by Anonymousreply 46March 31, 2025 6:16 PM

R14 THANK YOU. That poster seems to think EVERYTHING needs to have meaning. It doesn’t. Just like in real life, not everything has meaning. Sometimes it just is.

Jesus. I don’t get it.

PS he did the same shit last season.

Did anyone else notice how ENORMOUS Scott Glenn's ears were? I assume this is an old man problem where the rest of him shriveled down and the ears stayed the same but they were the size of his entire head

by Anonymousreply 50March 31, 2025 6:21 PM

R35 has the mentality of a toddler. In adult relationships we don’t do that “you snooze you lose” shit.

by Anonymousreply 51March 31, 2025 6:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 52March 31, 2025 6:22 PM

R38 only she doesn’t have low self esteem. She has a Savior Complex.

by Anonymousreply 54March 31, 2025 6:23 PM

I found myself judging Laurie for being in such a dangerous situation with the Russians at the fight and with her one night stand afterwards.

I pulled shit like that (1) in my twenties and (2) in familiar surroundings.

Laurie is mid-to-late 40s and is basically a single mother. She’s in unfamiliar surroundings. What the FUCK is she thinking? I’m surprised she’s not dead yet.

by Anonymousreply 55March 31, 2025 6:26 PM

There is a theory that Scott Glen's character is Rick's father. Not that he killed him but his mother, a drug addict, told him this because he left her for a lady boy, "killing' their family. It makes the story Sam Rockwell told fit Rick's storyline. How Sam ended up liking being fucked by lady boys. Scott Glen was probably the same guy, feel in love with a lady boy and left his family.

by Anonymousreply 56March 31, 2025 6:27 PM

Oh please. Laurie hanging out with the Russians in a VERY PUBLIC place was far less dangerous than Jaclyn letting one of them back in the house while the other two women were asleep

by Anonymousreply 57March 31, 2025 6:28 PM

To R520 from the previous thread-

Pornchai wasn’t in the episode because he was offscreen giving anal to Pam, who was also not in the episode.

by Anonymousreply 58March 31, 2025 6:28 PM

I thought it was weird that when Laurie was in bed with Valentin, her body blurred--both front and back. It's not like we would have seen anything we haven't already seen.

by Anonymousreply 59March 31, 2025 6:30 PM

In a surprise twist, Pam snaps and beats a lorazepam-incapacitated Tim to death with his cell phone.

by Anonymousreply 60March 31, 2025 6:34 PM

Here’s my main beef with this season- there are more boring characters than there are compelling ones. I’m half convinced that Walton Goggins is fucking Mike White which can be the only reason he is so fixated on his awful character. Momentum comes to a screeching halt every time his face appears onscreen. The Jaclyn/Laurie/Kate scenes are so frustratingly brief yet we need to be subjected to so many ponderous scenes with other subpar characters. Some characters are interesting only because of plot devices. Jason Isaacs’s character is so flat and awful, despite an intriguing storyline. There’s just very little propulsion this season. I feel like I have actual blueballs watching this season.

by Anonymousreply 61March 31, 2025 6:40 PM

Saxon is growing on this trip. Last night we saw a more vulnerable side to him. Why?

He’s now realizing how other people view him (because of Chloe and Chelsea) and he doesn’t like it. Back home he’s a big shot because he’s the big mans son and probably surrounded by yes-men, but now that he isn’t he sees how others view him and he’s definitely bothered by it.

by Anonymousreply 62March 31, 2025 6:40 PM

R61 that doesn’t even make sense. This isn’t an ongoing season. It was written them cast, then filmed all at once. Walton didn’t fuck Mike White for screentime. The character already had the screentime. All the main characters have a lot of screentime. It’s called an ENSEMBLE. There is no lead.

Season 2 was the only one where you could claim a lead existed.

by Anonymousreply 63March 31, 2025 6:42 PM

[QUOTE] I thought it was weird that when Laurie was in bed with Valentin,

This never happened.

by Anonymousreply 64March 31, 2025 6:43 PM

[quote]Not that he killed him but his mother, a drug addict, told him this because he left her for a lady boy, "killing' their family.

It might just be exactly what it is... he's a guy who killed his father who doesn't even remember it.

I was also thinking that maybe he is his father and he simply just left Rick and his mom. Rick's mother assumed he was dead and killed by this man when instead he took the man's place. I only thought this because his response to Rick's claims was saying his mother's name twice, almost as if he was in shock... that his son had found him, and then Rick wouldn't let him say anything else. Even after Rick was leaving, the man was silent.

by Anonymousreply 65March 31, 2025 6:43 PM

Whatever happens next week, White Lotus will get a season 4 and 5.

by Anonymousreply 66March 31, 2025 6:45 PM

Other than her friends telling Laurie she's dissatisfied with her life is there any indication in the storytelling/performance that Laurie is dissatisfied with her life? I'm really not getting that about the character, who seems to me very confident and content.

And what are we really meant to think Gaitok can do with the observation that he saw 2 Russian guys at a boxing match with Valentin? How would he prove that they robbed the jewelry store?

And Belinda's findings on her computer about Greg/Gary...why hasn't she shown those suspicious findings to anyone in law enforcement at the spa or even her trusted son? As they're all familiar with Greg/Gary from constantly seeing him around the hotel, surely, they'd be interested?

And was Chloe seriously doing Greg/Gary's bidding in trying to enlist Saxon in a ménage a trois? Or was she just putting Saxon on? In the end all it seemed so half-hearted on her part. I, at least, appreciated Saxon's firm refusal.

So many plot holes....

Yes, you can answer any of my questions with: well, that's how random life is. But this is an 8-part drama series....shouldn't we expect something a little more dramatic?

by Anonymousreply 67March 31, 2025 6:45 PM

I would over a suggestion to Mike white to rewrite the ratliffe family storyline: The Piper monastery shit should have come first in the season before any other drama with the family: Because the crisis of her doing that is relatively minor, but reveals significant things about Victoria and Tim’s values. Then half way through the season, we should have found out about Tim’s trouble with the feds. This would have provided the stake raising bump that the middle of the season missed having. Also Lachlan should have gone to monastery with Piper before rather than after the boat ride- so that pipers rejection of him leads him to try to bond with Saxon… inappropriately.

This would be a much better sequence of events for that family in order to build suspense through your the season

by Anonymousreply 68March 31, 2025 6:46 PM

The man was very old and frail and in shock. I saw people on Twitter mocking Rick for not beating the old man at least if he wasn’t gonna shoot him and it pissed me off. Something is wrong with people.

Rick not being able to even hit him because he was so old and frail is how I would feel.

by Anonymousreply 69March 31, 2025 6:47 PM

R66 well, being that it was already greenlit for a fourth season….

And being that this season is like 20x higher in ratings than last season….

I’d say that’s a safe “assumption”.

by Anonymousreply 70March 31, 2025 6:48 PM

R67 … are you watching the show at all? Maybe you should stop. It may be too advanced for you

by Anonymousreply 71March 31, 2025 6:49 PM

Nostradamus at R66.

by Anonymousreply 72March 31, 2025 6:51 PM

Mike White is just too smart and savvy not to realize himself that this season has been a huge disappointment. I predict he'll take extra time off before beginning the 4th season. And maybe he'll even hire a couple more writer friends to join him.

by Anonymousreply 73March 31, 2025 6:51 PM

I've blocked the poster at r49/r51/etc. who keeps repeatedly calling other posters "loser," "retard," and other abusive names.

by Anonymousreply 74March 31, 2025 6:54 PM

Only the season isn’t a disappointment. It’s only a disappointment to people who thought they were getting a repeat of season 2, which is their own fault. Season 2 was very different from season 1, why you wouldn’t know season 3 would be different from season 2 IS YOUR OWN FAULT.

by Anonymousreply 75March 31, 2025 6:54 PM

R74 and id put you on ignore. And then go look at the other thread and see how much vanishes. You’ve been talking to yourself a whole lot.

I love that Coon was like, fuck it I'm gonna be on White Lotus only once, I might as well let it all hang out.

I laughed when Victoria said she got all dolled up for the party and Tim was right next to her in that same pink shirt he's worn for seemingly half of the season, wrinkled in just about every way imaginable as if he just pulled it out of his ass. If they weren't such a rich couple disconnected from each other, she definitely would have commented on it.

by Anonymousreply 80March 31, 2025 7:08 PM

"You're so pretty. Why are you with that old man? Are you being held against your will?"

R84 she doesn’t have low self esteem at all. Like you said, she’s a dreamer with a savior complex

That really would have livened up the show!

I thought it was funny that Frank said something about having “one night in Bangkok” with Rick. Love that song!

I agree with the poster who said that Sam Rockwell can do no wrong. He is such a charmer and Frank was the perfect accomplice for this mission.

by Anonymousreply 90March 31, 2025 7:42 PM

I'm still loving this season, but admit there was some lazy writing with Frank showing up having NO knowledge of Sritala's movie career. This a day or two after she nearly busted Rick for his total ignorance? It would take them all of five minutes to familiarize themselves with a few of her old movies.

by Anonymousreply 91March 31, 2025 7:46 PM

Lazy writing and bad acting…

How long was Frank sober before his night with Rick? I think it had been a while, but can’t remember

by Anonymousreply 95March 31, 2025 7:54 PM

10 months

by Anonymousreply 96March 31, 2025 7:57 PM

Was Mike White going through something as he wrote this season? There's a palpable dark energy to it that's not all that fun to watch.

by Anonymousreply 97March 31, 2025 7:58 PM

Individuals with a savior complex often have low self-esteem. They feel a need to prove their worth by helping others.

by Anonymousreply 98March 31, 2025 7:59 PM

R96, that must have felt like forever. Frank and Rick seem like they've been through plenty of crimes and court-mandated twelve step programs together. Guys like that don't rely on trade craft; they always think that they can charm or lie their way through any situation. Their complete lack of preparation did, indeed, look realistic.

The South Asian mindfulness therapist and the Ratliffe’s sturdy but unctuous Australian concierge also seem to have vanished. Have we seen either of them in the last 4 episodes?

by Anonymousreply 103March 31, 2025 8:02 PM

The dream sequence of Timothy shooting his wife and son was chilling. Reminded me so much of Alex Murdaugh. Only Alex killed the hot douchebrah son first.

by Anonymousreply 104March 31, 2025 8:05 PM

That’s because we’ve been mostly off site from the hotel. And, in tv time, it’s been barely 48 hours.

by Anonymousreply 105March 31, 2025 8:05 PM

R98 not at all

by Anonymousreply 106March 31, 2025 8:09 PM

Alex Murdaugh killed his family because he viewed them as dead weight problem-makers. It was a rage killing. And / or he wanted that sweet, sweet insurance money.

Tim seems to actually care about his family to some extent.

But, yes— the dream sequences definitely call to mind the Murdaugh case.

[quote]Excellent acting but bad directing.

Directing is some of the best on TV, I feel like he outdoes himself each season. It's the editing that's a bit iffy this season, with maybe one too many cuts to B-roll footage and Thai fighting. I mean, it all looks really nice, but I still feel we should go back to seven or even six episode seasons.

by Anonymousreply 111March 31, 2025 8:20 PM

[quote] Their complete lack of preparation did, indeed, look realistic.

Bullshit. This is a life and death situation, not some casual con.

by Anonymousreply 113March 31, 2025 8:26 PM

There was a scene where Lochlan was showing Timothy a video of man walking into a tsunami and Tim was mesmerized by it, then there was Victoria's dream of wave swallowing them or their house or something, I don't quite remember, and lastly the monk describing to Tim how death is like a drop of water returning back into the ocean, with shots of droplets of water splashing and Tim again seemed really taken by it. We had that shot of ways crashing in this episode as well. If he doesn't kill himself or at least try to kill himself by walking into the ocean...I've been bamboozled by Mike White like I've never been bamboozled in my life before

by Anonymousreply 114March 31, 2025 8:35 PM

I just think Mike White remains too idiosyncratic for a general audience and that only becomes more clear with time as he keeps following his weird obsessions down ever weirder paths, and so you get lots of dullards who are inecplicably bored by the most riveting hour of TV every week. His approach is always so slo-mo car-crash in miniature that every year that I don't realize until the end how deeply I feel I know these characters; how they feel like real people to me. I think this third season's darker themes have been beautifully excavated and as much fun as I had with Tanya I don't miss the center of gravity that Jennifer Coolidge's reliable goofiness greedily gobbled up. It feels much more like an abstraction this year, with every facet commenting on the same disappointments, the same violence within ourselves. It's hard to say where the show will land until we've seen the entire thing but I think this is the most successful season so far.

4.5 million viewers watched episode 6 last Sunday. And that doesn’t count the eyeballs that watched on streaming platforms later in the week. These are all-time highs for the show. My TikTok feed is full of people working out solutions and analyzing clues and possible dead ends. It’s been years since I’ve seen so many people having such a good time with any series like they are with this one. I’m sure Mike White is very upset that some of you don’t like it. Blah-hah-hah!

by Anonymousreply 117March 31, 2025 8:45 PM

The scenes with Rick and friend at the rich Thai singer's house while sitting with the husband and awkwardly talking about "the film project" was beyond awkward. No one did their homework, actress or two guys. She didn't even google the "producers" bio? Amateur! The couple should have thrown them out after ten minutes for wasting their time. The guys should have coordinated their stories.

It's possible that after Rick pushed the old guy backwards in his chair and ran out, that the old guy died due to his fragility and injuries. In that case, Rick's goose is cooked and whatever happiness he and Chelsea may have found is gone.

It was a huge disappointment that Belinda's son wanted her to take the money, basically a bribe. No ethics there. Belinda should turn the old guy in, he's a murderer living off his victim's fortune. So what she was weird, she was heroic on that boat, sad that she died. Avenge her, Belinda! But first, get out of Thailand and report him from afar.

Loved the scene with Carrie Coon/Laurie fucking that guy then being extorted and fleeing in disgrace. Now that was some action!

Ever since dad Tim Ratliff dad learned he was broke he's done nothing but take pills and booze and think of killing his family and suicide. Boring! Come clean idiot! It will be traumatic but people do survive these disgraces. Start over somewhere else. Boozy mama can work for a change. Or she can dump him and find another rich guy.

I was proud of Gaitok for admitting he's not a tough guy. Now he needs to dump that airhead who doesn't appreciate a decent man.

by Anonymousreply 118March 31, 2025 8:59 PM

I don't know why anyone would come to this thread or for that matter Datalounge, and not expect to hear some hefty criticism and discussion. What would be the point of this thread/site if everyone merely loved everything all the time?

And as I said in an earlier thread, I do believe much of the criticism comes from a place of love for WL and simply disappointment that this season hasn't been better.

by Anonymousreply 119March 31, 2025 9:00 PM

[quote] No ethics there. Belinda should turn the old guy in, he's a murderer living off his victim's fortune.

She doesn’t know that. All she knows is that he won’t submit to questioning by the Italian police. And who could blame him?

by Anonymousreply 120March 31, 2025 9:06 PM

Belinda doesn't know Tonya had been heroic on the boat. All she knows is that three men were found shot to death on the boat, and that Tonya drowned in mysterious circumstances near it.

Even so, Natasha Rothwell said on the after-show commentary her character is conflicted about not accepting Greg's money because she thinks she would be setting a bad example for her son.

by Anonymousreply 121March 31, 2025 9:17 PM

One episode only to go i can safely say this is the worse season. For all the very obvious fight ring motif, every confrontation in this episode was either underwhelming or unresolved or both.

The three friends continue to have almost nothing to do. The family stays resolutely the same, though somehow confirming Lachy’s and Saxon’s being creeps. The dinner party at Greg’s was most unconvincing. Bankcok was predictable.

On the plus side: Leslie Bibb continues to do great, the russian con, not much else noteworthy .

by Anonymousreply 122March 31, 2025 9:19 PM

OK, I loved Frank actually name dropping Pippin in this episode to describe the choreography in Sritala’s 1980s TV appearance.

by Anonymousreply 123March 31, 2025 9:38 PM

I didn't know that, as a 16-year old, Leslie Bibb won a modeling contest on Oprah's show.

I want to have sympathy for Rick, but that’s purely down to Walton Goggins’s innate likability.

Nothing in the character as written is all that sympathetic if likable. He’s a terrible boyfriend, and now he’s destroyed Frank’s newly rebuilt life. Frank will probably end up being killed.

If I had to guess, Rick seems to symbolize the tragedy of people not dealing with their problems. Rick’s life was more tragic than most, it’s true. But to me he is a powerful warning.

You're right r66, this show has so much buzz. I like that the B List and some unknowns get a career boost from this.

All Jason Isaacs has done for the last 5 episodes is sweat.

by Anonymousreply 131March 31, 2025 11:02 PM

Why do people think Saxon showed vulnerability this episode? He didn’t. He was being his usual player self with Chloe. He didn’t give a shit about meditation. He was finding another way into her pants. And Chloe was smart enough to see through it.

by Anonymousreply 132March 31, 2025 11:06 PM

I still want to know how two ostensibly hardened criminals would show up to a fellow criminal's mansion in a VERY fraught situation pulling a con without knowing a single thing about the con, ie even a movie title or two of Sritala's. Bad writing.

by Anonymousreply 136March 31, 2025 11:17 PM

If it was a real life con, R136, that would obviously reflect most poorly on the perpetrators. But it's not like Mike White didn't write this lack of planning into the script. That was an intentional bit of writing. Not some oversight discerned by e sharp-eyed viewers.

I'm going to pretend like a couple of the cast members haven't already implied that they will live next week in their interviews.

[quote]Belinda doesn't know Tonya had been heroic on the boat. All she knows is that three men were found shot to death on the boat, and that Tonya drowned in mysterious circumstances near it.

And if she took the money for her silence, she could get in trouble later on--especially if someone pieces together that she worked at the White Lotus that Tanya visited in the past. She also told at least three people that she thinks he did kill Tanya so she can't pretend like it didn't happen now. Taking that bribe could lead to an obstruction of justice charge and then she'd lose everything. I'm hoping she still gets what she wants in the end and that Pornchai has a stash of cash he has saved over his lifetime to start a business with her like he asked.

I am glad that she at least knows that Tanya didn't forget about her although Greg sure is public for someone who doesn't know if any of their guests might actually be able to place him.

by Anonymousreply 141March 31, 2025 11:54 PM

r97, he was holed up in a Thai hospital with toxic shock, and had a fever dream that produced this.

by Anonymousreply 142April 1, 2025 12:15 AM

Additional thoughts;

Jason Isaacs is a fine actor but has now been lorenzepaned for what, 4!episodes? Also, his visions of killing is family are extremely lazy writing, the menace would suffice.

Carrie Coon acts fine but has even lesser to do than her friends. I think this was the character that initially viewers thought could identify themselves. Very wrongly.

Aimee Lou is a great actress but is also stuck in a now thankless role.

Finally, slighttly irritattes me the gay incest bait storyline. So far ie meaningless and verging on exploitation.

by Anonymousreply 143April 1, 2025 12:21 AM

I think people have forgotten this season that even in the past Mike White's writing isn't always airtight.

Many people commented during the first season that it made no sense that Connie Britton and Steve Zahn's extremely wealthy family would not have paid for a suite big enough for their two teenaged children to each have their own rooms, and that both parents then would have allowed their daughter to invite a college friend along, and then that both allow the daughter and the friend to force the son to sleep in the stuffy kitchen. But for the exigencies of the plot, White needed the son to be miserable in the suite so he had a reason to sleep on the beach and meet the outriggers.

In the second season, it made no sense Quentin (Tom Hollander) had that spectacular villa and that gigantic yacht, and yet was about to go bankrupt and lose the house (couldn't he just have sold the yacht and kept the villa?).

by Anonymousreply 144April 1, 2025 12:23 AM

I liked the little meta moment when Sam Rockwell, who starred in the “Fosse/Verdon” miniseries, was commenting on young Sritala’s video choreography as being, “kinda Fosse.”

by Anonymousreply 145April 1, 2025 12:23 AM

R141 that’s not even close to real life’s. There’s no bribe. She’s in no legal peril in any of the three countries. The plot point is strictly her ethics v. his possible criminality. Its for dramatic effect.

by Anonymousreply 146April 1, 2025 12:24 AM

R107 I don't think the Murdaugh murders were rage killings. It took care of several problems for Alex.

1. Paul's boat crash lawsuit would go away. (In Alex's head anyway) This could possibly keep the exposure of his financial misdeeds at bay.

2. There are rumors Maggie started investigating his finances, and maybe wanted a divorce. Again, her being gone would keep his financial misdeeds at bay.

3. If he killed Paul and not Maggie, she of all people would know he'd killed Paul so he had not choice.

4. The sympathy. I believe he thought that if his wife and son were murdered, his firm would be more lenient about his financial misdeeds and give him the opportunity to make things right.

I don't think rage played into it. It was an ice cold, calculated decision.

I think the other commonality between the show and the killings is Alex and Timothy are both pillheads.

by Anonymousreply 147April 1, 2025 12:27 AM

[quote] That was an intentional bit of writing. Not some oversight discerned by e sharp-eyed viewers.

Obviously it was intentional. That doesn’t mean it is plausible.

r144, where was it ever said in S1 that Britton and Zahn's family were EXTREMELY wealthy? Wealthy, yes, but not necessarily enough to afford 3 separate suites. The illogic or untruth, if it was there, is nothing compared to all the plot holes this season.

by Anonymousreply 156April 1, 2025 1:41 AM

Have all of Mike White's previous TV and film projects been written solely by him?

Btw, I'm a huge fan of his Chuck & Buck and Beatriz at Dinner and the first season of White Lotus. No collaborators on any of them, I believe.

by Anonymousreply 157April 1, 2025 1:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 158April 1, 2025 1:46 AM

Fabien - no one wants to hear someone sing in German. . . .

by Anonymousreply 160April 1, 2025 1:47 AM

I don't even understand what purpose the Fabian and Pam characters served, this season.

by Anonymousreply 161April 1, 2025 1:49 AM

Pam was just a lame device to get the Ratliff's to give up their phones.

by Anonymousreply 164April 1, 2025 1:54 AM

The lavishing of praise and building the manager up to sing while truly not giving a shit shows what kind of two faced people they are. The 3 women do it to each other too. They're fake.

I liked the plot theory of everyone thinking the cops are there for them and reacting as such. That is the best one I've heard and I imagine that would be better than what we'll get from the actual finale.

by Anonymousreply 165April 1, 2025 1:57 AM

Who is the old cunt who plays the role of mister sritala?

by Anonymousreply 166April 1, 2025 1:58 AM

So boring. Can you imagine being one of the three women and having to stay in Thailand for six months to shoot what amounted to less than one episode of television? Just to sit around a table and take meals or lounge poolside? They had like one big sequence, they’re night out with the Russians, and the rest of it has been just picking up entrances and exits. All of their scenes feel so bitty.

by Anonymousreply 167April 1, 2025 2:09 AM

R156, Britton was the CEO of her own company.

by Anonymousreply 168April 1, 2025 2:12 AM

Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell are married so at least they got a luxury vacation together.

by Anonymousreply 169April 1, 2025 2:13 AM

Not only that, r168., but Alexandra Daddario's character recognized who Connie Britton's character was because her company is so internationally successful.

That;'s where it was made clear Britton's character had to be extremely wealthy, r156.

by Anonymousreply 170April 1, 2025 2:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 181April 1, 2025 3:01 AM

r170, who's to say how big or how financially successful CEO Connie Britton's company was? And the husband played by Steve Zahn seemed to be a bit of a lay about.

Again, I'm not saying they weren't wealthy, just not extremely wealthy.

by Anonymousreply 182April 1, 2025 3:04 AM

Even in the dinner scene before the 3 ladies broke up for the night, they were all just eating fruit plates.

by Anonymousreply 183April 1, 2025 3:06 AM

A hundred thousand dollars just does not seem like enough to make anyone respectable shut up about murder.

by Anonymousreply 184April 1, 2025 3:21 AM

She was a tech CEO . They make millions per year.

by Anonymousreply 185April 1, 2025 3:45 AM

Steve Zahn's character was able to purchase a $75,000 bracelet for Connie's character. Pretty good for a layabout.

And I agree with r184, I would have expected at least a million.

by Anonymousreply 186April 1, 2025 3:45 AM

[quote] that’s not even close to real life’s. There’s no bribe. She’s in no legal peril in any of the three countries. The plot point is strictly her ethics v. his possible criminality. Its for dramatic effect.

No, R146, in Thailand that’s money laundering, in Italy that’s Aiding and Abetting. You just can’t take money from someone that may have committed a crime. There’s no extradition treaty but they have done it before.

The point is, and it looks like it will happen next week, she will sit down at some point and realize that, there are possible negatives to her taking it or not.

If she doesn’t: he could kill her and Zion. If she does: she could be aiding a murderer, he could still kill her anyway, they would now be involved with each other and 100k is nothing to him & it sounds like Zion will tell her to ask for more money.

by Anonymousreply 187April 1, 2025 3:47 AM

All Belinda knows is that Greg was wanted for questioning in Italy and refused to cooperate and is now living under another identity . He’s not a fugitive from justice. He has not been charged in a crime. She does not know he was involved in murder. She has no moral obligation to alert the authorities.

by Anonymousreply 188April 1, 2025 3:52 AM

[quote] You just can’t take money from someone that may have committed a crime

Actually, yes you can.

by Anonymousreply 189April 1, 2025 3:54 AM

She does have an ethical situation, because she told Zion of her situation, and does not want to be a bad example to her son.

That's what Natasha Rothwell has said, and she would know best.

by Anonymousreply 190April 1, 2025 3:57 AM

Sorry: I meant "ethical obligation."

by Anonymousreply 191April 1, 2025 3:57 AM

You think a person has an ethical obligation to call the police because we know someone is wanted for questioning in a foreign country and declined to cooperate?

She has no actual knowledge of what happened in Italy.

Maybe she feels some kind of personal responsibility because she knew Tanya. But that sense of responsibility is emotional, not ethical.

by Anonymousreply 192April 1, 2025 4:10 AM

I was expecting this 7th episode to start having some energy. It didn't. There's something just so flat and lethargic about the pacing that it's really hard to get through each episode.

I mentioned this to some friends and they all scoffed.

The White Lotus is tv's emperor's new clothes. People are afraid to say they don't like it. But outside of Parker Posey's terrifying accent, the sweet kiss between the brothers, and Valentin's incredibly, ridiculously, amazingly hot body, there isn't much here.

by Anonymousreply 193April 1, 2025 4:13 AM

I know Saxon was meant to believe it, but I couldn't be quite sure whether Chloe herself believes that bullshit story about Greg wanting to watch. And why Chelsea was so supportive of the whole thing. As Greg is clearly lying about not being able to have sex with his former wife, it's a ruse, but to what end, and who's in on it?

I'm not sure which is more preposterous, the Greg/Chloe or the RIck/Frank schemes.

by Anonymousreply 194April 1, 2025 4:14 AM

I like it because you get to see what happens on a yacht boat party in another country I guess.

Maybe it's Americans craving international delight and drama like movies in classic times when they treated and depicted other countries with respect.

by Anonymousreply 195April 1, 2025 4:22 AM

Controversial opinion, but fun drunks like Frank should never stop drinking. We need them, humanity needs them. Abstinence should be for the mean and the violent drunks. Honestly, I feel the same way about jolly fatties who go on Ozempic, they're just robbing us all of joy.

R200 Humanity needs fewer people like you.

[quote] I know Saxon was meant to believe it, but I couldn't be quite sure whether Chloe herself believes that bullshit story about Greg wanting to watch. And why Chelsea was so supportive of the whole thing.

Chloe wants another chance at Saxon again because he's young and hot. Plus it's what Greg wants, and she wants to tie him closer to her. I don;t think anyone would want this, but Chloe isn't very particular.

And Chelsea isn't very bright--she's got some great qualities, but she's naive and easily led. Anjd since she's compromised her own wants so much with Rick, she realizes why Chloe would want to do this for Greg.

[quote] You think a person has an ethical obligation to call the police because we know someone is wanted for questioning in a foreign country and declined to cooperate?

What I actually said was: Natasha Rothwell believes (and I agree) that Belinda feels an ethical obligation not to accept a hundred thousand dollars as hush money from Greg while Zion knows about the arrangement.

You're putting words in my mouth.

by Anonymousreply 203April 1, 2025 3:02 PM

The ratings for this season are the best in the show's history. A lot of that is new viewers. Considering how this season has gone, I doubt season four will pull the same numbers.

by Anonymousreply 204April 1, 2025 3:08 PM

Saxon is a virgin. He's a total nerd who wants to be cool. All his sexy talk to the ladies is a naive effort to look experienced, which he is not. He's a nerdy daddy's boy seeking approval but weak on the actual testosterone it takes to get a girl.

by Anonymousreply 205April 1, 2025 3:12 PM

Saxons a frat boy who got mad pussy at Duke and thinks that's what life's all about.

He's Stiffer.

[quote]You're putting words in my mouth.

I don’t recall Belinda using the word “ethical.” Pretty sure that was you.

by Anonymousreply 207April 1, 2025 3:31 PM

Saxon needs a big, hard cock in his ass and a huge load of cum all over his face.

by Anonymousreply 208April 1, 2025 3:31 PM

[quote]Considering how this season has gone, I doubt season four will pull the same numbers.

Except the numbers keep climbing every week, which implies that people -- outside of this thread anyway -- are enjoying the show and intrigued by the characters and mystery

by Anonymousreply 209April 1, 2025 3:33 PM

The only thing I don’t like about the season are the Thai characters storyline. I suspect he’ll get killed trying to prove his masculinity to the Thai girl, who basically said she wouldn’t be interested him unless he embraces violence.

Love the rest of the show. Maybe not as good as past 2 seasons, but still better than almost anything else on tv.

by Anonymousreply 210April 1, 2025 3:47 PM

[quote] My theory… the old man and old Asian lady will call the police on Rick, who is so fucking stupid he must have forgotten they know where he’s staying. Tim thinks the police are there for him. The Russians think the police are there for them. Greg thinks Belinda turned him in and the police are there for him. It will be a SHITSHOW

Even if this doesn't happen it should. Awful and funny at the same time.

TikTok is full of people trying to justify/prove that Sritala is Rick's father and is a MTF trans woman.

First, why would she have a Thai accent speaking English if she is American born as would be Rick's father? How does transitioning affect American to Thai race? Rick never mentioned to Chelsea that he is half Thai or Asian.

It is a big stretch to imagine that Sritala is Rick's father, but can anyone explain how it would be possible?

by Anonymousreply 214April 1, 2025 4:33 PM

This is fascinating, r213. Great details at your link:

[quote]The new season will see the return of several fan-favorite characters who managed to survive their original getaways. Among them is Daphne Sullivan (Meghann Fahy) from season 2, who is now navigating the Mediterranean solo, post-divorce, and very into biohacking.

[quote]Also returning is Quinn Mossbacher (Fred Hechinger), the teenage son from season 1 who famously ditched his family in Hawaii to canoe with local islanders. Now in his early twenties, Quinn resurfaces in Greece as a sustainability intern at Koukoumi, filming a mini-documentary about the resort’s zero-waste kitchen.

[quote] Joining them is fan-favorite Nicole Mossbacher (Connie Britton), Quinn’s high-powered mother, who is attending a women’s leadership and longevity retreat at the resort. Fresh off a board shake-up at her tech firm, Nicole is there to reclaim balance, though her passive-aggressive Zoom calls from the resort’s juice bar say otherwise.

[quote]New characters include a scandal-plagued wellness guru with a kombucha empire, a TikTok-famous fruitarian couple on a pre-breakup honeymoon, and a Greek-American crypto investor who insists his carnivore diet is ancestral.

[quote]White confirms some season 3 characters will also return, but doesn’t want to spoil the season finale, which airs on April 6. Like White, season 3’s Jason Isaacs is also vegan.

by Anonymousreply 215April 1, 2025 4:35 PM

[quote] Coon proceeded to clarify that The White Lotus’ third season was written before the election, and that the show’s creator, Mike White, felt the scene was too “small” to handle a “topic so big” in the aftermath of Trump’s win—and his administration’s attacks against the transgender community.

[quote]“The season was written before the election. And considering the way the Trump administration has weaponized the cultural war against transgender people even more since then, when the time came to cut the episode down, Mike felt that the scene was so small and the topic so big that it wasn’t the right way to engage in that conversation,” Coon explained.

That’s an April Fool’s joke article you ninny.

by Anonymousreply 217April 1, 2025 4:38 PM

R213 that all sounds amazing, especially the Greece part, but it also sounds too good to be true if revealed on April 1. I hope it's not an April Fool's, but wouldn't be surprised if it is, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 218April 1, 2025 4:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 225April 1, 2025 4:45 PM

What doesn’t surprise me in the least is the lack of critical thinking skills on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 226April 1, 2025 4:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 227April 1, 2025 4:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 228April 1, 2025 4:59 PM

[quote]But one more thing…

[quote]As much as we’d love to see Daphne microdosing at dawn, Quinn perfecting his downward dog in a composting workshop, and Nicole spiraling in her caftan during a group fire ceremony, this isn’t a real announcement.

by Anonymousreply 232April 1, 2025 5:11 PM

Laurie discussing having a trans daughter would have been a stupid and gratuitous insertion and would have detracted from the episode. Regardless of Mike’s motivation, it was good that he realized it should be cut.

by Anonymousreply 233April 1, 2025 5:28 PM

Add me to the chorus of people saying Parker Posey should've been going through major and life threatening withdrawal. Restless limbs, sleepless nights, seizures, crying jags, shaking, all of it. That shit is awful to come off of and it's a little irresponsible that they're not showing it

by Anonymousreply 234April 1, 2025 5:36 PM

by Anonymousreply 240April 1, 2025 6:54 PM

r212 I knew HBO wasn't going near the trans shit for the next four years, it just makes zero business sense given the popular vote result. I just thought they'd avoid it in future seasons, not that they'd cut it out of a finished product. So that's quite a strong statement by them.

by Anonymousreply 241April 1, 2025 6:55 PM

by Anonymousreply 245April 1, 2025 6:58 PM

[quote]It is a big stretch to imagine that Sritala is Rick's father, but can anyone explain how it would be possible?

Those theories are peddled by white folk who've apparently never seen a menopausal Thai diva with substantial facial work before, and so they think she looks like a man. It's all very gross and disrespectful when this actress is clearly a biological woman with a long history in showbiz.

by Anonymousreply 246April 1, 2025 6:59 PM

You don't withdrawal from benzos if you haven't been on them long. Maybe Victoria just got a script for her vacay?

by Anonymousreply 247April 1, 2025 7:02 PM

I believe she hopes to sing on the Oscars one day.

by Anonymousreply 248April 1, 2025 7:06 PM

I think something will go down with Saxon, he seems about to snap.

by Anonymousreply 249April 1, 2025 7:16 PM

There is ONE person on these threads who is concerned about Victoria needing to exhibit symptoms of withdrawal. And she brings it back up in every thread.

by Anonymousreply 250April 1, 2025 7:17 PM

R247, it took me 3 months to get physically addicted and have a seizure when I quit cold turkey. She's already on refills and her kid is showing concern. R250, it's literally my first post in any of these threads. I just started watching it Saturday. And yes, I thinking binging is the wrong move on this series, it really drives home the point that nothing much happens. The first 2 seasons I watched weekly.

by Anonymousreply 251April 1, 2025 7:20 PM

Plus, it would've been fun to watch Parker caterwauling and panicking, maybe trying to hit the trophy girls up for pills, going into town on a drug deal. Rich drug addicts are just as pathetic as poor ones and something would've happened plotwise.

by Anonymousreply 252April 1, 2025 7:23 PM

Are Piper and Lochlan going to fuck?

by Anonymousreply 253April 1, 2025 8:10 PM

R253, let's hope not. Absolutely nobody wants to see that.

by Anonymousreply 254April 1, 2025 8:18 PM

No, but Victoria and Piper are going to scissor.

"Piiip-errr... YEEEES!"

by Anonymousreply 255April 1, 2025 8:23 PM

Piper's entire storyline seemed underdeveloped and like a waste. Is anybody actually interested in whether or not she stays in a Buddhist sect or not? She could've been scrapped entirely and that time better spent on somebody else who is more compelling.

by Anonymousreply 256April 1, 2025 8:37 PM

Without Piper they wouldn’t be in Thailand at all.

by Anonymousreply 257April 1, 2025 8:39 PM

I think it could have been more interesting if they dropped the Piper-Buddhist storyline and instead had her become friends with Chelsea and Chloe.

by Anonymousreply 258April 1, 2025 8:46 PM

R257, fair point. And as I write this, I realize that all of White's young 20-something female characters (Sydney Sweeney and friend, Portia, Piper) have been the least interesting throughout. JMO.

by Anonymousreply 259April 1, 2025 8:49 PM

Piper's attempt to join the sect's community provided the thematic underpinning for the whole plot. It's probably not been very rewarding for the actress playing Piper, but it was necessary for the entire concept of the season.

by Anonymousreply 260April 1, 2025 8:51 PM

Great, R251. Now go have your “I’m Dancing as Fast as I Can”-esque fantasy elsewhere. We’ve thoroughly exhausting that particular topic.

White Lotus: Russia. It's happening next season, bitches.

by Anonymousreply 274April 1, 2025 10:02 PM

People doing a retreat often follow the monks' routine of no food after lunch. Clearly this one isn't very traditional.

So much bad writing and direction: Lochlan's sudden veering out of fratbro dude mode seemed odd. So did Sritala's willing acceptance of likes from Frank, while the aborted confrontation between Rick and Jim largely falls flat. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds Goggins off-putting--looking weird as an acting style only takes you so far. For me, he's teh Jennifer Coolidge of this season because when ever I see him, I know it's not going to be great.

I hope one of the three women gets held hostage or something. Otherwise, their storyline is boring and not much of a distraction from everything else. They seem to be there to show how awful the Russians are, but that could have been established without them.

Whetheer

by Anonymousreply 275April 1, 2025 10:54 PM

You NEVER go cold turkey off of all kinds of meds, and they don’t have to be addictive substances. Of course you’ll have withdrawals. After a few months? Probably not. She may be on refills, but that doesn’t mean Victoria takes them every day. Maybe she only takes them when she has insomnia? Many people get insomnia on vacation, so she took them every day until her hubs stole them.

by Anonymousreply 276April 1, 2025 11:03 PM

No, r276, she was digging into them regularly until her husband swiped them.

by Anonymousreply 277April 1, 2025 11:06 PM

R276, it was established early on that she took them whenever she felt the slightest bit “anxious” about anything.

R278 Still, doesn’t mean every day.

by Anonymousreply 282April 2, 2025 12:28 AM

Valentin has nice arms (looked great in the tank top at the fight) and a killer ass. I’d do him.

Alexi seems fun. I’d do him, too.

by Anonymousreply 283April 2, 2025 1:00 AM

Yes. Victoria has been 100% responsible and only taking her xannies on as needed. To suggest otherwise is crazy

by Anonymousreply 284April 2, 2025 1:16 AM

R234 Yeah, I mentioned it upthread. People responded "she drinks herself to sleep now" but benzos don't work that way. At the very least she'd be irritable and unable to sleep. But more likely she'd be having other pretty severe withdrawal symptoms. And drinking would only make things worse. The woman would be miserable.

I mean, I get it, it's a show. But I do feel like this and a few other details make it seem like some corners were cut while Mike White was writing. Love the show, but there's a sloppiness there that the first couple seasons didn't have.

by Anonymousreply 285April 2, 2025 1:25 AM

Why are people assuming she was an addict?

by Anonymousreply 286April 2, 2025 1:33 AM

R286, because every third word out of her mouth was "lorazepam."

by Anonymousreply 287April 2, 2025 1:40 AM

R287 Right. The writing made it seem as if it was a regular part of her life. A person who takes it as often as she appeared to on a regular basis would definitely be addicted, and would have to work with a doctor to ween off of it.

Now, if it is meant to be the case that she just started taking it on vacation, there should have been a line of dialog to clear that up. This is why I say it's a bit sloppy.

I feel bad harping on this because I do love the show. It's a fun escape every week, and I'll be sad when it ends.

by Anonymousreply 288April 2, 2025 1:48 AM

This went on for years from 17-26. One lorazepam and all of that disappeared instantly, and I felt normal for first time since high school. My worst experiences were on SSRIs. Nothing else helped me, and I tried everything. I did Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 3 times. Now, I'm on clonazepam and have my life back. I'd be disabled without it.

I feel ya, Victoria!

[quote] Carrie Coon didn't return for “Avengers: Endgame” because Marvel wouldn't pay her more, husband Tracy Letts says

Tracy Letts said the reason his wife, Carrie Coon, a costar in Avengers: Infinity War is not a part of Avengers: Endgame came down to salary.

"I believe [Marvel] went to her for the second one, and they asked her to be in the second one," Letts said on a recent episode of The Ringer's The Big Picture podcast, per PEOPLE. "And she said, 'Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?' And they said, 'No. We're not going to pay you any more money.'"

Released in April 2018, Infinity War grossed $2 billion at the global box office, becoming only the fourth film to do so, just seven weeks into its run.

"She said, 'Wow, you're not going to pay me any more money, then I don't think I'm going to do it,'" Letts continued. "And they said, 'Well, you should feel yourself fortunate to be part of the Marvel Universe.' So she declined."

Letts and Coon married in 2013, five years before she played villain Proxima Midnight in the MCU. The character didn't have any lines in Endgame, having died in the previous movie. But she did appear on screen.

"We would've made a bigger deal out of this," Letts said, "but it would have involved us watching the movies, and we weren't going to do that."

Brain zaps hurt. I got them after a cold turkey stop of something, paxil, something. I was on a bunch of shit in high school. My mom shopped around psychiatrists to fix me but none could fix a cold hearted bitch of a mother.

They were happy to take her money and prescribe though.

I've had brain zaps from going off Paxil, and they didn't actually hurt--they were just deeply annoying.

by Anonymousreply 318April 2, 2025 9:42 PM

I'm now more intrigued by the behind-the-scenes goings-on.

[quote] [Isaacs] elaborated that dynamics shifted significantly: "Some people got very close, there were friendships that were made and friendships that were lost. All the things you would imagine with a group of people unanchored from their home lives on the other side of the world, in the intense pressure cooker of the working environment with eye-melting heat and insects and late nights."

[quote] Unlocking a little more behind-the-scenes intrigue, Isaacs hinted that the drama didn't just play out on screen, teasing that "an off-screen White Lotus as well, with fewer deaths but just as much drama."

[quote] Jason was tight-lipped about behind-the-scenes gossip, chuckling as he declared he would "absolutely not" share juicy details. "I became very close to some people and less close to others, but we still all had that experience together, and there's a certain level of discretion required," he elaborated.

Apparently the composer for the series has had constant fights with Mike White since season 1 and is now leaving the show forever. He compares himself implicitly to the nigth club owner trying to make everything work in "La Cage aux Folles," and White to Albin, the diva.

Cristóbal Tapia de Veer did not have an entirely pleasant stay at “The White Lotus.”

Mr. Tapia de Veer, a 51-year-old composer who was born in Chile, joined a video call on Monday from his home in the Laurentian Mountains in Quebec, a gong the size of a beach ball visible over his right shoulder. We had planned to discuss his score for Season 3 of the HBO show — specifically, its reworked main title theme, which ignited a minor fury among fans when the season premiered in February.

The conversation went in a very different direction. Mr. Tapia de Veer, who has won three Emmy Awards for his work on “The White Lotus,” said he would not be returning for the show’s fourth season.

He described creative disagreements with the show’s creator and director, Mike White, that began during Season 1. Conversations with producers could be “hysterical,” Mr. Tapia de Veer said, and the show’s creative team repeatedly requested music that was more upbeat and less experimental than the work Mr. Tapia de Veer wanted to produce. (Representatives for HBO declined to comment for this article.)

“I feel like this was, you know, a rock ’n’ roll band story,” Mr. Tapia de Veer said. “I was like, OK, this is like a rock band I’ve been in before where the guitar player doesn’t understand the singer at all, and is always fighting with the guitar player.”

And about that eerie Season 3 theme? Mr. Tapia de Veer loves it, but had hoped the season would include a longer version that builds into the more recognizable melody from the Season 1 and Season 2. Frustrated by its absence, he posted the “uncut ending” to his YouTube channel. (You can listen to it below.)

In the following conversation, which has been edited and condensed, Mr. Tapia de Veer reflected on his tenure with the show. (cont.)

by Anonymousreply 329April 2, 2025 10:38 PM

Q: I want to go back to the moment when the Season 2 theme that you composed for “The White Lotus” became a phenomenon — it had all these remixes, it was playing in clubs. Did that put any pressure on the next season?

A: Pressure? Not really. The pressure has always been something else in this show. And since we’re talking themes, I wonder if I should tell you for the first theme, how it got to the second — like, the whole “White Lotus” theme thing. You know, I haven’t done any interviews, so I don’t even know where to start with this.

Q. Start wherever you’d like.

A. It’s kind of weird right now because I announced to the team a few months ago that I was not coming back, that I was leaving. I didn’t tell Mike for various reasons; I wanted to tell him just at the end for the shock and whatever. Except I told the whole editorial team and music editor and producer and all that, but I didn’t think that they were going to tell him. At some point he heard about that.

Q. This is your last season, for sure?

A. Yeah, yeah. For sure.

Q. Did Mike say anything to you when he found out that you planned to leave?

A. He says a lot of things, but I can’t really talk about that. There was a French movie, “La Cage Aux Folles.” You know how there’s Albin, which is like the star, and there’s Renato, who is the producer who is always taking care that Albin doesn’t lose his mind about something, because Albin is the diva and Renato is the guy who is trying to make everything work. To me, the show felt very much like that.

Q. Did it feel like that from the beginning?

A, When I got the script, I wasn’t sure that it was something for me, because it was very well written, but there’s a reality TV kind of vibe going on, and comedic. My stuff in general is the opposite of this, it’s super dark and edgy. But when we had the talk with Mike, I just told him in a joke that I thought we could do some kind of “Hawaiian Hitchcock,” and he really grabbed on that and he started laughing.

I feel like I need to give credit where credit is due, because it’s hard to know how something like “The White Lotus” can actually happen, which is harder than people might imagine. You see it afterward, and it’s a success, but to get there is quite the struggle. I was on the phone with her [Heather Persons, one of the show’s producers] all the time, and she was trying to convince Mike about this theme, because he didn’t want the theme.

Q. He didn’t want the Season 1 theme?

A. He had a temp score, a song that is more like something you would listen to in Ibiza, in some clubby place with a chill, sexy vibe. And there’s literally no edge to it. It’s a good song; it’s nice music. There’s just absolutely no — whatever you find in the “White Lotus” music, the relationships with the characters — there’s none of that. It’s just nice background music.

I just stuck to what I was doing. And when I was giving versions, it was still the same thing: There were still crazy people and screaming and stuff like that. From there, it became this weird relationship of, How do I pass all this weird music into the show?

Q. What direction were you given for the Season 3 theme, “Enlightenment”?

A. There was no direction. When I started working on this, I had a collection of Thai gongs that are unrelated to the show. So I started experimenting with that, and then I started looking for someone to play the saw u, which is the Thai violin, which in the theme happens in the beginning.

My mom sent me an accordion at some point, an Italian accordion, and I have no idea how to play it. But I was able to play that. I think it helps the melody, to make it more uplifting, because the melody is very dark. (cont.)

by Anonymousreply 330April 2, 2025 10:41 PM

(cont.) Q. How did you come up with the melody? Did you consider including that “ooh-loo-loo-loo” melody from Seasons 1 and 2?

A. The melody is special. It’s something very weird, and is almost impossible to sing unless you’re a singer with a good ear, because the intervals in it are really hard. It has a mystery in it that is kind of magic to me. It’s like there’s some witchery going on.

I have, like, over 20 versions of that theme, with and without the ooh-loo-loo-loos. But of course, in the 1:45 titles that’s allowed, there’s nothing from the other ones. That was kind of a risk, but we never talked about that. I don’t think everybody was really aware of how attached people were to the ooh-loo-loo-loos.

Q. What was it like for you, watching people get so upset that the melody was different? (“I do not understand why you would break something that was perfect,” read one social media post.)

A. When that came out, I had TMZ calling me, even people from England and from France, because they wanted some kind of statement about the theme. People are furious about the change of the theme, and I thought that was interesting.

I texted the producer and I told him that it would be great to, at some point, give them the longer version with the ooh-loo-loo-loos, because people will explode if they realize that it was going there anyway. He thought it was a good idea. But then Mike cut that — he wasn’t happy about that.

I mean, at that point, we already had our last fight forever, I think. So he was just saying no to anything. So I just uploaded that to my YouTube.

Q. Do you think people have warmed up to the theme as it is?

A. Oh, yeah. At one point, people were like insulting me and sending me horrible things. And then I started seeing these videos: ‘You know what, I used to hate the theme but now I’m kind of dancing to it.’ It’s like they’re transformed. I was really excited about that.

Q. How are you feeling now about the decision to move on?

A.. I mean, it is what it is. You know, I was watching the Emmys, and it’s like, there’s one thing I’m pretty proud of and that is I feel like I never gave up. Maybe I was being unprofessional, and for sure Mike feels that I was always unprofessional to him because I didn’t give him what he wanted. But what I gave him did this, you know — did those Emmys, people going crazy.

People don’t remember, but at first some people were complaining about the music: “I can’t concentrate on the characters, and it’s too much and I’m so stressed out.” But I’m really happy to take those kinds of risks. That is the main thing that I’m most happy about — it was worth all the tension and almost forcing the music into the show, in a way, because I didn’t have that many allies in there.

I treasure that more than something else I did that was just a success, and it works and that’s that, with less struggle. This was a good struggle.

The White Lotus cast and crew has revealed several details about the cast that almost was, including which well-known actor almost played Walton Goggins’ Rick Hatchett and why creator Mike White “didn’t want to cast” Patrick Schwarzenegger at first.

The buzzy third season has everyone talking, and according to his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, White just as engaged in the discourse as the rest of us.

“People now come into the show thinking it needs to be about hotel employees getting stepped on by rich people every season,” White said. “Then there’s the criticism that the show has become the thing it was supposed to satirize. At this point, people want The White Lotus to be different things.”

Some things about the show were different, White, producer David Bernad, casting director Meredith Tucker, the cast, and more revealed to THR ahead of the season’s April 6 finale.

Woody Harrelson was the first choice to play Walton Goggins’ part.

Bernad explained that “everyone is treated the same” on the show as as far as billing (which is alphabetical) and pay, which ended up being a problem for one would-be Lotus star. THR reported that multiple sources say Woody Harrelson was the original choice to play Rick opposite Aimee Lou Wood’s Chelsea—until he saw how much he’d be paid. According to those sources, Harrelson even tried meeting with David Zaslav to renegotiate his salary, but was a no-go. Other sources told the publication that series regulars make around $40,000 an episode. Walton Goggins took on the role, after he was originally slated to play “one of these bald guys we pepper the thing with,” according to White. “Walton’s not exactly that. He’s a bit more handsome, he has hair,” so the role they landed on for Goggins made sense, he added.

Patrick Schwarzenegger almost didn’t get the job on account of his nepo baby status.

The oldest son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver nearly lost out on the role of the oldest Ratliff brother Saxon, Bernad said. “Patrick Schwarzenegger’s last name worked against him, by the way. We didn’t want to cast him because of that.” Schwarzenegger has opined that people think he was handed his role because of “who his dad is,” telling The Sunday Times that he works on his characters “for hours” and took “10 years of acting classes.” At least in this case, his famous parents nearly cost him the opportunity. Ultimately, Bernad said, “He was just so good,” that they chose him for the role.

White didn’t want to cast Blackpink’s Lisa either.

The K-Pop star at the center of the show was almost deemed too famous (in Thailand) to get her role. All White heard was that “There was a Blackpink girl [Jennie Kim] in The Idol, and I was like, ‘We’re not doing that,‘” he told THR. Before that, he said, “I did not know who Lisa or Blackpink was.” After he said no, however, Lisa’s reps offered for her to audition. “Her audition was amazing,” White said, “and Lisa’s so nice and uncomplicated, but I still didn’t want to cast her. I’m just used to not having so much attention; we don’t need it.” But I wanted to be respectful to Thailand. She’s like Taylor Swift meets Princess Diana there.” White added, “When we cast her, there were people in the production that cried.” He was glad it was a “nice part” that didn’t show the star “running around sleeping with married men.”

Some actors backed out once they learned about that storyline.

The incest scenes between the Ratliff brothers were apparently enough to dissuade at least some actors. “For that stuff with the brothers, we had to tell people beforehand,” Tucker said. She said her team asked the actors, “‘There is going to be some same-sex kissing and stuff. Are you comfortable with that?‘” and the answer wasn’t always yes. “I think maybe one kid for Sam [Nivola]’s role dropped out,” she continued, “but some of these kids were barely 18, so I could understand.” Bernad said that when they sent the scripts to Nivola and Schwarzenegger, “We were anxious... We both were like ‘I hope they don’t drop out.‘” Nivola added, “When they sent me my contract, it was like, ‘You have to be comfortable with sexually explicit scenes or whatever,’ and I was like, ‘Sure, yeah, I’ve never really done anything like that on camera—first time for everything.’ But I was not expecting that!”

They wouldn’t let Sam Rockwell say no to his big cameo.

“He passed at first,” Bernad said. “Sam is a perfectionist, and the window to do the job was very tight—two or three weeks and then this giant monologue.” Rockwell explained, “To be honest, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pull this off,” since he was already shooting Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die in South Africa and “the monologue... was a lot.” White and Bernad had a little help with the convincing, as Rockwell’s longtime partner Leslie Bibb plays Kate in the series. “I just said, ‘If he doesn’t do it, you can’t be mad at me,‘” Bibb told the site. Though Rockwell worried he wouldn’t “have enough time to prep and get into the headspace of this character,” Bernad said, “We just didn’t let him pass. We were like, ‘Great, so when are you coming?‘”

The role of Chloe was recast—and now we know why.

Posh troublemaker Chloe was originally going to be played by the Thai actress Francesca Corney, but Tucker confirmed earlier reports about why she was ultimately replaced by the French-Canadian Charlotte Le Bon. “Had we seen people in person for these roles, we would’ve realized the original Chloe was quite petite and just going to play too young. The part was reconceived for Charlotte.” Corney filmed for several weeks before the role was re-tooled.

Parker Posey first realized she’d be on the show at Jennifer Coolidge’s Halloween Party.

It was after an exchange with White at Coolidge’s party that Posey was “struck” with the feeling she might get a part on The White Lotus. Posey told THR she was “alone at a cheese table at one the morning, wondering, ‘Should I have some more cheese?‘” when she saw White. “Mike was one foot out the door, and he’s like, ‘Hi, I just want to say you’re doing such great work lately. Blah blah blah. Bye!‘” Afterward, she thought, “Maybe I’m going to be part of White Lotus. My friends were like, ‘Of course you are.‘”

Jon Gries was deadly serious about keeping his role under wraps until the season premiere.

“He was so committed to keeping it a secret,” Bernad said. “There was no press release for him, no premiere, no photos. At one point, we were going from Phuket to Bangkok, which is like a 12-hour drive, and he drove in a car with the equipment just to avoid being spotted with us at an airport.” Whenever people asked what he was going out of town to film, Gries said, “I told people I was going to the Philippines to film a new TV show for a European network.” He added, “I’m using this as a platform to apologize to everybody that I’ve lied to.”

Ultimately, White expressed his hope that all the changes will culminate in a “satisfying” finale for fans and “stick the landing.” He explained, “My hope is that it’ll feel like a cathartic sad or a satisfying sad and not a ‘What the f---?’ sad.”

But at least one of the actors is worried about the fan reaction to the finale. “People are going to hate Mike White,” Le Bon predicted.

r367 it's not just the music over the credits, it's all the music in every episode, which has been a huge part of the show. The music has been extremely important in keeping a sense of tension going. Plus I think you're wrong about most people skipping over the credits - the credits (and the change in music this season) have been a huge talking point. I'd say that the composer's score has been very nearly as important as anything to the success of The White Lotus.

by Anonymousreply 372April 3, 2025 4:44 PM

I wonder if they throw a bunch of money at him, he would relent and sign up for season four.

Whoever said that most people skip over the credits for this show has no idea what he/she is talking about. Not by a country mile.

by Anonymousreply 373April 3, 2025 4:51 PM

The score, since season 1, has been doing a lot of the heavy lifting. By design this show is written to be vague and open to interpretation. Losing this composer on top of this lackluster season is really gonna hurt.

Yup, as others have said, definitely sounds like Chelsea is going to die especially coming from the actress who worked with Aimee. Also another actor slipped the names of two people who would live.

The only other nice characters people would care about are Belinda and Piper but Chelsea is very much loved by viewers and not considered boring.

by Anonymousreply 380April 3, 2025 7:19 PM

Maybe both Rick and Chelsea dies- Rick tries to save her, but gets shot also, falls into the lagoon.

by Anonymousreply 381April 3, 2025 7:24 PM

Part of me feels like "People are going to hate Mike White" could also mean NOBODY dies. If the "death" has been a fake-out the entire time I could see people being pissed. We don't ever actully see a dead body - just something floating in the water!

by Anonymousreply 382April 3, 2025 7:30 PM

Because who gets killed can be so off the wall in The White Lotus, I’m thinking Frank might be the one who dies. Sritala will call the police to evict Rick from the hotel and Frank will be collateral damage as the shooting breaks out. That’ll teach him to fall off the wagon.

The death isn’t typically…felt. That’s why I doubt it’s Chelsea. That would be kind of sad. It’s more likely to be kind of funny and the characters will move on rather quickly from it. The only impact it will have on them is self-centred, “it could’ve been me.”

by Anonymousreply 386April 3, 2025 8:06 PM

God, reading that NYT article it is cringeworthy how serious people take this show, including the actors.

Sure, it is interesting and i have also been commenting on the several threads, and is fun reading them, but come on.

by Anonymousreply 387April 3, 2025 8:16 PM

How dare people take their work seriously

by Anonymousreply 388April 3, 2025 8:19 PM

They have really ramped up the “Chelsea thinks she can save a bad guy from himself” bit. This is so classically pathological, I’d be very surprised if she doesn’t die as a result of Rick’s stupid antics.

I love those imitations!

I am genuinely surprised Sam Nivola is the best (with Patrick Schwarzenegger the second best).

I am equally surprised Carrie Coon is the worst.

[quote] Q. He didn’t want the Season 1 theme?

[quote] A.

Mike White should go with his original idea for music, for season four.

That would be a huge fuck you to the asshole music producer.

- The cast loved Patrick.

- Walton and Isaacs get some jabs in at each other.

- Posey skipped out on being interviewed.

- Mike White thought both Parker Posey and Aimee were funny.

- Jon Gries seems like the sweetest man.

- Jason comes across as chaotic.

Unfortunately I think it's likely Chelsea will die - it would fit with the tragedy arc of Rick's life. He will realize he truly loves her and what a blessing she is and then poof.

by Anonymousreply 416April 4, 2025 3:23 PM

And her death would likely be all his fault. True tragedy.

by Anonymousreply 417April 4, 2025 3:51 PM

Rick is an enormously self-indulgent dickhead. I can say that because he and I have very similar backstories—eerily so. One of my parents was killed while doing”do-gooder” work. My surviving parent basically abandoned the kids.

Anyway, you suck it up and shut it down. It’s the only way. I’m angry about a lot of things these days, but I don’t wallow in self-pity about things that happened 40 years ago.

Rick apparently has money. He has ride-or-die friends. He has a woman who truly loves him. But all he can do is ruminate on shit that happened 40 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 418April 4, 2025 4:07 PM

Mike White really sounds like a complelx guy. The cast all admire him and like him so much, yet he also sounds like he can also be an exacting and controlling nightmare to work with.

by Anonymousreply 419April 4, 2025 4:09 PM

But again, when has this show ever functioned as a tragedy?

It’s meant to be social satire, innit?

by Anonymousreply 420April 4, 2025 4:23 PM

Pretty much

by Anonymousreply 421April 4, 2025 4:37 PM

r414 Yeah, I saw them bitching about it on Reddit when the composer quit, saying Mike White must be the one to blame because he's also anti-trans for appearing on that podcast. Knew it was only a matter of time, they'd been suspiciously quiet since that Sam Rockwell monologue everyone (except them) found hysterical.

Also, that sub is beyond saving, most of their content last year wasn't even celeb gossip, but just posts about celebs making comments about Gaza. They'll never learn that the zeitgeist has shifted, they're the worst of the worst of the terminally online leftie slacktivism.

by Anonymousreply 428April 4, 2025 9:32 PM

R427, sounded like, from one of the stories coming out, he didn't even want to do this role.

R426, that would fit with speculation that more than one person dies, it would suit Rick to end up all alone in the world.

I was glad they put Charlotte Le Bon on one of the Entertainment Weekly covers. She's been a huge part of the show, even if she isn't in the opening credits. While I feel bad for the person she replaced, she earned it.

Mike White’s vision for season 3 came to him as he was recovering from a near death experience.

[quote] Other than her friends telling Laurie she's dissatisfied with her life is there any indication in the storytelling/performance that Laurie is dissatisfied with her life? I'm really not getting that about the character, who seems to me very confident and content.

Really? She seems notably insecure to me. I feel DLers are conflating their love of Carrie Coon with Laurie.

In terms of the group dynamic she is the beta. She not as tall, not as pretty, not as popular, and as a hard nosed lawyer is not as feminine as her girlfriends. She “has” to make money from her brain, or her looks, like the other women. And is punished by having to pay alimony to her ex husband for doing so. She ran off crying on the first night. She is exhibiting prime pick-me characteristics by whipping off her top for attention at the pool after boring everyone senseless whining about her career. And she is behaving like a rebellious teenager on her gap year by sneaking off to fuck a random Russian who she knows has a girlfriend, after she criticised Jaclyn for being unfaithful.

And she’s choosing to remain friends with women who make her feel bad.

These are archetypal characters. Remember Miranda from SATC? She was slim, intelligent, successful and sexually liberated. She also very clearly felt like the ugly duckling, was embittered, jealous and judgemental.

Just how much did Arnold pay HBO to have everyone gush about his talent free nepo baby

by Anonymousreply 445April 5, 2025 4:52 AM

I agree Laurie is the beta, but that's more because she's falling back into old patterns with the trio than she would naturally be the beta. The other two get by on their looks, whereas she's forged a career from her brains.

Sometimes when you're caught in a toxic long-term friendship you just have to have the strength to leave it, because you cannot keep letting old dynamics drag you down. These three women are just too critical of one another to have a healthy friendship anymore. They hold each other in contempt, and once that enters either a sexual relationship or an intense former friendship, the relationship has to end. You cannot be with people who hold you in contempt.

by Anonymousreply 446April 5, 2025 5:05 AM

Kate is the Beta. Stuck in Bumfuck Texas vs. her two bicoastal, professional friends.

by Anonymousreply 456April 5, 2025 6:15 AM

R456, will you be having Thai food?

by Anonymousreply 457April 5, 2025 6:20 AM

[quote] I agree Laurie is the beta, but that's more because she's falling back into old patterns with the trio than she would naturally be the beta. The other two get by on their looks, whereas she's forged a career from her brains.

Laurie is a beta because she hasn’t decentered trying to fight her friends for male attention using her looks and sexuality when her reality is that she attracts men via her financial status. Jaclyn and Kate attract men via the social capital that their looks provide; Kate by submitting and acting maternal, Jaclyn by commanding (no coincidence she has a younger husband).

Of course Jaclyn and Kate aren’t unintelligent, and Laurie isn’t unattractive, but Laurie doesn’t have that social capital. Jaclyn does and Valentin played hard to get with her, and it’s no coincidence that the night ended with Valentin fucking Jaclyn in her 5 star hotel room because she’s a powerful celebrity. He negged her into her allowing him to luxuriate in her wealth and luxury and body. Alexsei was fucked by Laurie in her dingy apartment with her hunching away on him, because he allowed her access to his body to get access to her money.

A strong and confident woman wouldn’t mind that Jaclyn is needling her to get laid and wouldn’t feel betrayed by Valentin not choosing her. So when DLers say how strong and confident Laurie is I wonder what show they’re watching.

White Lotus is modern social satire like Thackeray or Austen so interpersonal play needs to examined through that “narrow” lens. This season is far too long and there is not quite enough plot to fill it up, but Mike White’s writing is as sharp as ever.

by Anonymousreply 458April 5, 2025 7:21 AM

I wonder if Patrick channeled Don Junior in his performance? Seems like it

by Anonymousreply 459April 5, 2025 8:10 AM

Mike White has confirmed that Joseph Baena stars in S4.

by Anonymousreply 460April 5, 2025 8:16 AM

Isn't Jaclyn covering the expense of this getaway for all 3 of them - or at least the cost of the WL suite? That would tend to establish her de facto alpha status power dynamic. With Laurie coming off as somewhat of a less than supplicant ingrate, even as she merely tries to hold her own.

by Anonymousreply 461April 5, 2025 8:20 AM

[quote] I wonder if Patrick channeled Don Junior in his performance? Seems like it.

Yes, even if not intentionally. I've seen flashes of DJTJ in his expressions from the start. Especially in that cramped, squared-off smile that he gives. Which unfortunately for him, might also be something that's physically imposed.

by Anonymousreply 462April 5, 2025 8:27 AM

Yes R461, she's financing the whole trip, I believe including flights. That was a nice touch in the writing. Her "alpha" status isn't limited to looks and fame.

by Anonymousreply 463April 5, 2025 9:19 AM

I guess I'm late to the party. I tried to comment 3 DL threads ago re: the White Lotus, but they're all filled - so here I am in thread #8.

I'm staying at a friends house that has MAX and so I just watched White Lotus Season 3, episodes 6 and 7 ... and all I have to say is ...

What a nothing burger.

Seriously? This is controversial and has social media buzzing? Did I watch the right episodes? That was a total waste of 2 hours.

by Anonymousreply 464April 5, 2025 10:15 AM

by Anonymousreply 472April 5, 2025 2:04 PM

R464–the first season was excellent. The second season was not, but it had a big finish. So far the third season has been a real disappointment, but the ratings are going up, so there will surely be a fourth. Hopefully, Mike White, who writes and directs everything himself, will bring in some fresh blood, for his own sake and the audience’s.

by Anonymousreply 473April 5, 2025 2:44 PM

I know Carrie Coon is universally loved, but I find her irritating. I can’t figure out why.

by Anonymousreply 474April 5, 2025 3:14 PM

R474 I’ve come to that very conclusion. I think she’s talented but utterly insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 475April 5, 2025 3:16 PM

R450, OK, so I named the wrong interchangeable Russian pal of Valentin’s. He was still NOT hotel staff which was the reason McCain’s comment was so idiotic. So fuck off, dear.

by Anonymousreply 476April 5, 2025 4:08 PM

My first introduction to Carrie was Gilded Age and her Hidden Valley Ranch accent so I found her kind of annoying too. I like her in this tho

by Anonymousreply 477April 5, 2025 4:17 PM

I love that Coon's forehead remains unbotoxed, unlike Bibb's and Monaghan's. It's refreshing to see those lines. I think Posey has been very light with her procedures as well.

by Anonymousreply 478April 5, 2025 4:42 PM

I think what's insufferable and annoying is hearing her dissect this shallowly drawn character like she's Lady Macbeth.

For me, so much of what she says she's doing with Laurie is subtext, barely coming through onscreen. If the series was better and bolder this season, maybe there'd be room for that kind of subtlety, but I find her character mostly just ordinary and uninteresting.

by Anonymousreply 487April 5, 2025 5:33 PM

r483 I hope you realise that was an April Fools' joke. A niche vegan website ain't landing exclusives on anything White Lotus, lol.

by Anonymousreply 488April 5, 2025 5:35 PM

Pornchai just isn't central enough to the story to be the only one killed. it would have to be one of the people on the cover of the latest Hollywood Reporter if just one character is killed.

by Anonymousreply 489April 5, 2025 5:55 PM

I'm hoping at least 5 of the main characters bite the dust. I'm guessing Chelsea, Gaitok, Victoria, 1 of the 3 lady-friends and Greg, Anything less would be disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 490April 5, 2025 5:56 PM

All season I’ve been thinking there’s no reason to bring back Greg/Gary except to kill him off. I don’t want to see his ass in season 4! Though I love Jon Gries.

Now, I will be utterly shocked if Rick, Frank, and Chelsea don’t all end up dead.

While the Ratliffs stole the show, this season is really about Rick. His inability to overcome his obsession with revenge took over his whole life, blinding him to his good fortune.

This is a tragedy on a grander scale than Duke Dad’s “I’m just another shady finance bro” story. We’ll likely see that tragedy play out on an equally grand scale— the deaths of two favorite characters (Frank and Chelsea.)

Rick appears to be a lucky guy except for his very unhappy childhood. Granted, that’s very difficult to overcome. But what would the Darfur Orphan ™️ have to say about that?

by Anonymousreply 491April 5, 2025 6:05 PM

by Anonymousreply 496April 5, 2025 8:10 PM

In the last episode, I think Pam will finally crack when someone uses their phone in the dining area. "No phones!" she screams, before running to the guard station. She knocks out Gaitok, steals the gun and begins firing indiscriminately at anyone holding a phone or even near a phone. Chelsea, calling Rick for the 20th time, catches a bullet. Tim gets shot right after his lawyer tells him he's taken care of his situation and everything will be fine.

Roll credits. See you in season four.

by Anonymousreply 503April 6, 2025 12:17 AM

r502 Both she and Letts have spoken about doing AA, etc, before

by Anonymousreply 504April 6, 2025 12:42 AM

Yeah, that tracks. Coon has the gruff demeanor of an alkie.

by Anonymousreply 505April 6, 2025 1:11 AM

Coon said on Marc Maron’s podcast that she’s been sober for five years and Letts has been sober for, I think, twenty. She started out at AlAnon but shifted to AA when she chose sobriety.

by Anonymousreply 506April 6, 2025 4:25 AM

She did a great job as acting like a hardy partier. Real life experience.

by Anonymousreply 507April 6, 2025 4:30 AM

Actually, Coon says her drinking problem happened while she was being a stay-at-home mom during Covid and was bored out of her mind, so she started drinking.

by Anonymousreply 508April 6, 2025 4:56 AM

One more episode and then it's on to the long awaited season two of The Last of Us. Pedro Pascal, swoon.

by Anonymousreply 509April 6, 2025 5:02 AM

R509 I love Pedro, but not a fan of the zombie genre. Based on the description of their affliction, I'm just assuming I wouldn't have the stomach for it. And so I haven't even watched the bottle episode with Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman

by Anonymousreply 510April 6, 2025 5:14 AM

r510, that is the best episode in the series.

by Anonymousreply 511April 6, 2025 5:16 AM

Drinking causes cancer. It's a carcinogen.

by Anonymousreply 512April 6, 2025 5:55 AM

I bought two bottles of Moscato today. One for $3.99. Alcohol made in the U.S. won't have a tariff, so it's something everyone but alcoholics should indulge in.

by Anonymousreply 513April 6, 2025 7:32 AM

R513 Thanks for letting us know.

by Anonymousreply 514April 6, 2025 7:35 AM

Where's that fucking rosé?

by Anonymousreply 515April 6, 2025 7:52 AM

Maybe Jesus will save her from those Buddhists?

by Anonymousreply 516April 6, 2025 12:11 PM

The actor playing Gaitok was apparently too ripped when he got cast, so Mike told him to stop working out for a couple of months in order to get a physique more suited to his character. Sucks for us!

Anyway, today might be the very last time we hear those delightful woo-woos and ooh-loo-loos, so treasure every single one of them when you hear them. Same for anything that comes out of Victoria's mouth.

by Anonymousreply 517April 6, 2025 12:28 PM

Sooooo-naaaahhhh-meeeee!

by Anonymousreply 518April 6, 2025 1:14 PM

It's the day of the White Lotus finale, where is everyone? At church still?

by Anonymousreply 519April 6, 2025 1:27 PM

[quote] The actor playing Gaitok was apparently too ripped when he got cast, so Mike told him to stop working out for a couple of months in order to get a physique more suited to his character.

I should say!

Will you rice queens give it a rest?

by Anonymousreply 522April 6, 2025 1:35 PM

There's a lot riding on tonight's finale!!!!

by Anonymousreply 523April 6, 2025 1:40 PM

r520 Damn, now I'm no longer surprised by those beautiful forearm veins. Pretty much impossible to get rid of those even if you stop working out.

by Anonymousreply 524April 6, 2025 1:44 PM

I’m starting to cry already

by Anonymousreply 525April 6, 2025 2:02 PM

Carrie Coon says she has been sober for five years but started drinking during Covid five years ago. That doesn’t make sense. Was she an alcoholic for a month?

by Anonymousreply 526April 6, 2025 2:17 PM

Probably 3 months- that was the average time that American citizens stayed in their home.

by Anonymousreply 527April 6, 2025 2:38 PM

Maybe she felt sad

by Anonymousreply 528April 6, 2025 3:07 PM

Or unemployable.

by Anonymousreply 529April 6, 2025 3:08 PM

I've been sober for a little over a decade now. I'd LOVE to get drunk regularly, it's just that I'm poor and don't have any friends, lol.

by Anonymousreply 530April 6, 2025 3:12 PM

I’m so sad that it’s over after tonight! Definitely not a PERFECT season, but it’s for sure more interesting than most stuff on TV right now. Plus, I’m going to miss these threads. The past 8 weeks has been the most fun I’ve had on DL in years!

by Anonymousreply 531April 6, 2025 3:28 PM

You know White Lotus loves a shocking twist. Someone who barely speaks will be the one floating, and we’ll all be screaming, “Who is this?!”

It’ll be the quiet one sitting in the corner with a drink, watching everyone else implode. At the end, they’ll just be like, “I’m just here for the free food, honey.” They always survive.

by Anonymousreply 532April 6, 2025 4:07 PM

R530, you need to check into the white lotus

by Anonymousreply 533April 6, 2025 4:25 PM

I think there will be several deaths.

Greg/Gary will have Pornchai kill Belinda.

Lochlan is the body in the water.

Saxon retrieves his phone and discovers his father is in trouble. He’s the one who decides to use the deadly fruit to kill Tim and Victoria, and then himself.

by Anonymousreply 534April 6, 2025 4:36 PM

Jonestown Redux

by Anonymousreply 535April 6, 2025 4:38 PM

R534 should be a show writer

by Anonymousreply 536April 6, 2025 4:38 PM

You all keep acting like this White Lotus: Guyana Tragedy.

I mean who said it was a massacre?

by Anonymousreply 537April 6, 2025 4:38 PM

[quote] Greg/Gary will have Pornchai kill Belinda.

How will that work? Via mind control?

"Come to me. I command you to turn around. Look into my eyes. Deep into my eyes. You have no will of your own." -- Angelique

by Anonymousreply 538April 6, 2025 4:39 PM

[quote] [R534] should be a show writer

Yes, for "General Hospital" circa 1985.

by Anonymousreply 539April 6, 2025 4:40 PM

Gaitok actor is a great singer.

I wish he could have his teeth fixed. It's off-putting.

by Anonymousreply 540April 6, 2025 4:44 PM

Omg! OMG! O M G !!

by Anonymousreply 541April 6, 2025 4:54 PM

I hope Thai restaurants are prepared for the onslaught of Pad Thai orders this evening.

by Anonymousreply 542April 6, 2025 4:57 PM

I see what you did there.

by Anonymousreply 543April 6, 2025 5:00 PM

R539 will Ginny Blake get away with framing Bobbi for the murder of DL Brock?

by Anonymousreply 546April 6, 2025 5:45 PM

Jonestown? What a FABULOUS vacation idea. Can we drink the Kool-aid? Can we? No poison, of course, but we could bring buckets and Dixie cups. You know, for the experience.

by Anonymousreply 547April 6, 2025 5:55 PM

I’m betting Part 9 will be full before the night is over.

by Anonymousreply 551April 6, 2025 9:35 PM

R549 I’d like to give Tim some peace by giving him a piece… of my ass!

by Anonymousreply 552April 6, 2025 10:32 PM

R542, will you be enjoying some pad see ew? Perhaps some Tom Yum soup?

by Anonymousreply 553April 6, 2025 10:40 PM

I was thinking earlier that it would be cool if Lochlan became a cult leader. A cult in which all male members receive the righteous handjob.

by Anonymousreply 554April 6, 2025 10:43 PM

[quote]I hope Thai restaurants are prepared for the onslaught of Pad Thai orders this evening.

I was out panic buying at Michaels late this afternoon (the last day of the Lowest Prices of the Season, including spring floral and décor) and picked up my Pad Thai on the way home and am eating some of it now. I think I'll wait to eat more until the show starts.

by Anonymousreply 555April 6, 2025 10:53 PM

With the finale just hours away & this thread soon to close. it's not too early for the new thread.

R547 drink all the Kool Aid you want, but I’d stay away from the Flavor Aid!

by Anonymousreply 557April 6, 2025 11:16 PM

Hour and 20 minute warning.

by Anonymousreply 558April 6, 2025 11:40 PM

I will miss the sophistication of the fan theories: Tanya has been reincarnated as the lizard in Belinda's bungalow; the three gossip girls are one woman suffering from DID.

by Anonymousreply 559April 6, 2025 11:47 PM

It's weird to me that it's almost universally agreed this has been a disappointing season for the show, yet this has been far and away the most popular of the seasons.

My guess is it has to do with escapism during a particularly stressful period in people's lives.

by Anonymousreply 560April 6, 2025 11:56 PM

They should do it in a Latin Brazilian or Spanish speaking country

by Anonymousreply 561April 6, 2025 11:59 PM

White Lotus: Colombia, bitches. Cocaine, male hustlers, and more. Make it happen, MW.

by Anonymousreply 562April 7, 2025 12:07 AM

Mike White has said he wants to do a season in Australia, as well as all the other continents except Antarctica.

by Anonymousreply 563April 7, 2025 12:10 AM

I was late watching the last episode because of being away at a beach resort myself so forgive my post on a minor topic from the last thread.

I love my kindle, but buy a physical book to read when going on a beach vacation because electronics a (salt and/or chlorine especially) electronics don’t mix.

by Anonymousreply 564April 7, 2025 12:10 AM

[quote]It's weird to me that it's almost universally agreed this has been a disappointing season for the show

That is in no way "almost universally agreed" you deluded fuckwit.

by Anonymousreply 565April 7, 2025 12:11 AM

This season is more popular because both the characters and the actors are better in total than the previous seasons, even though the characters don't do much. I think Mike White is seeing the feedback that a lot of people felt the season was too boring and so he will make improvements for the next season.

by Anonymousreply 566April 7, 2025 12:12 AM

True story: I am currently staying at a White Lotus-type resort hidden away somewhere in Mexico. It would be perfect. Added touch: today at lunch I was seated near three women…who bitched their way through the meal.

When worlds collide!

by Anonymousreply 567April 7, 2025 12:24 AM

Were they eating anything besides fruit plates, r567?

by Anonymousreply 568April 7, 2025 12:37 AM

R568, larb.

by Anonymousreply 569April 7, 2025 12:39 AM

They were questioning the source of the maize used in the farm-to-table appetizer. Seriously. The waiter reiterated everything was sourced locally in the State of ______.

by Anonymousreply 570April 7, 2025 12:40 AM

Two minute warning

by Anonymousreply 571April 7, 2025 12:59 AM

Just seeing Rick in the recap reaffirms that he is the worse thing to ever happen to White Lotus. Lame storyline. Lame character. I hope he dies tonight.

by Anonymousreply 572April 7, 2025 1:03 AM

R572 = Woody Harrelson, counting his dollar bills

by Anonymousreply 573April 7, 2025 1:04 AM

No real time analysis, like the SOTU?!

by Anonymousreply 574April 7, 2025 1:12 AM

I remember Rick very well because of his forehead. There's something so disconcerting about his hairline. It's uncanny valley.

I didn't remember until today that really bad dresser from the last season. She wasn't that memorable.

by Anonymousreply 575April 7, 2025 1:13 AM

I just started it right now I'm a little late.

by Anonymousreply 576April 7, 2025 1:13 AM

Jason’s eyes are really poppin’ in that blue polo. Beautiful!

by Anonymousreply 579April 7, 2025 1:20 AM

Uh oh Gaitok is going to get himself killed by letting the Russian know he is suspicous

by Anonymousreply 580April 7, 2025 1:21 AM

Shouldn't Ratliff's pills be gone by now? I don't see a 24 hour Walgreens for refills...

by Anonymousreply 581April 7, 2025 1:22 AM

R580, don’t wait to tell people incriminating information. If you wait, you’ll get killed . . .

by Anonymousreply 582April 7, 2025 1:24 AM

Chekhov's gun...the fruit comes into play

by Anonymousreply 583April 7, 2025 1:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 584April 7, 2025 1:28 AM

I’m dying for this guy to just kill himself and put us out of our misery.

by Anonymousreply 585April 7, 2025 1:30 AM

I’ve had sufficient of mopey Duke Dad

by Anonymousreply 586April 7, 2025 1:32 AM

Maybe in his mind he will spare Lochlan because Lochlan is the only family member who could live with no money or things

by Anonymousreply 587April 7, 2025 1:33 AM

Lochlan could “please” me any time. Lil’ cutie.

by Anonymousreply 588April 7, 2025 1:34 AM

Jason Isaacs in that scene with Lochlan looked like the dad from Josman's "My Wild and raunchy Son."

by Anonymousreply 589April 7, 2025 1:36 AM

Maybe Mook will kill him? Suspicous that she is always popping up and getting after him to be more agressive.

by Anonymousreply 590April 7, 2025 1:37 AM

Greg looks so sad and mopey all the time. I know he’s morally grey, but I’d cheer him up, sexually.

by Anonymousreply 591April 7, 2025 1:39 AM

Mook is the fucking worst.

by Anonymousreply 592April 7, 2025 1:40 AM

Zion’s hubris and ego is unattractive.

by Anonymousreply 593April 7, 2025 1:41 AM

R587 and watch Lochlan be the only one to drink the milkshake. And die.

by Anonymousreply 594April 7, 2025 1:42 AM

Can it be Mook who dies and not Gaitok? He’s the sweetest.
