Allan Carr - Hollywood Producer
Gazing upon Allan Carr lounging in his subterranean Egyptian disco brings to mind two questions. 1) Is he the original DL subscriber and 2) why did his career take such a nose dive.
For a long time Grease" held the record for biggest box office with almost $400M, while Grease 2 grossed only 15M.

Shades of Lana Turner. His barber puts his 8x10 up on the wall and a few weeks later he gets a call from a casting agent.
“Allan Carr saw your picture recently at Jerry Esposito’s and he’d like us to bring you in to read for the lead in his new movie.” When I called Jerry to tell him about it I said, “Thank you so much for putting (my picture) up there”
He said, “When Allan Carr looked up there he said, “who is that?” And Jerry said “That’s Russell Todd, he’s new in town…” Allan said, “He is going to star in my next movie!”

The first "Star Wars" outdid it. "Grease" didn't get the $400M in that first year, SW grossed over $300M in 1977 alone. Look at the numbers on Boxoffice Mojo.

For years he was pissed off that Olivia Newton-John turned down a starring role in Can’t Stop The Music. A few months later she did Xanadu. They were able to smooth things over years later.

He helped steer Ann Margaret's comeback in the early 70's.
After Grease, he wanted to do the same with Olivia, and offered her Can't Stop the Music, which she wisely turned down, and did Xanadu instead. Carr was pissed and they fell out for years, only reconciling a year or two before his death.
He then turned his attention to Lorna Luft, trying to be Fosse to Lorna's Liza. Only problem was he didn't put her in a musical where her talents might have shown best. She had no solos in Grease 2, which was bizarre since she was the only cast member who could legitimately sing. He wanted her for Snow White at the oscars debacle, but she turned him down, wisely realizing that it might be a trainwreck. Carr trashed her over the phone to the point that she was in tears. They never spoke again.
Ann was the only one still close to him at the end, and she got his ashes.

I'm not sure that Xanadu was the right choice, either. They're both some of the worst movies ever made. Xanadu ended Olivia's promising film career.

Xanadu the film flopped but the soundtrack was a worldwide smash. Magic was the number one song over the summer of 1980 in the States.
Can't Stop the Music was just a dismal all around failure.

Nancy and Valerie Perrine HATED each other when making Can't Stop the Music. Allan had to appoint someone to run interference between the two.
Nancy knew the movie was a piece of shit and only directed it for the paycheck. She snuck out of the premiere as the film was about to start.

She should have taken her name off that turkey. Seeing it was her directorial debut, perhaps she was unable to convince Carr to try to fix the "screenplay" but she has to take most of the blame. She didn't have to do it. Did she really think it would be a feather in her cap?

R47, I seem to recall that back in the '70s, Estelle Getty was Nancy's stand-in on some project and was not very nice to her. Years later when Estelle was the star on GG and Nancy came in to guest-star as her sister, Estelle considered confronting her about her past behavior, but ultimately chose not to.

[quote]Did she really think it would be a feather in her cap?
It's been years since I read Party Animals, but I believe Nancy was a last-minute replacement for somebody else who had dropped out. It was a spur of the moment decision. I don't think she had any intentions on establishing herself as a director, but they offered her a nice amount of money, so she took it. Phylicia Rashad was supposed to be in the movie, but they wound up replacing her with Altovise Davis, Sammy's wife.
R49 Estelle was Nancy's stand in on some of the Bounty Commercials. And Estelle was thrilled about Nancy starring on GG, because she felt it was a huge comedown for Nancy, who was awful to Estelle previously.

Allan rented an amazing home on the beach @ Diamond Head. I want to say it was 88 or 89....... Anyway, myself & 2 friends were invited to a party he was throwing. Had a friend of a friend who knew him. It remains one of the most bizarre parties I had ever been to. Carol Burnett, Jim Nabors, Richard Chamberlain & other celebs were there. Doris Duke blew through for 30 min. Fun memories I haven't thought of in ages....... Damn were we whores........

"In 1966, Carr founded the talent agency Allan Carr Enterprises, managing the actors Tony Curtis, Peter Sellers, Rosalind Russell, Dyan Cannon, Melina Mercouri, and Marlo Thomas. Some of the other entertainment figures whose careers he managed were Ann-Margret, a string of whose television specials he also produced: Nancy Walker, Marvin Hamlisch, Joan Rivers, Peggy Lee, Cass Elliot, Paul Anka, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, George Maharis and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
Carr was responsible for the invention of the false and much-derided story that Cass Elliot died by choking on a ham sandwich. In 2020, journalist Sue Cameron admitted that she promulgated the story at Carr's request by writing it into Elliot's obituary for The Hollywood Reporter; Carr decided that the humiliating falsehood was preferable to the implication that Elliot's heart attack was associated with substance abuse."
