R2 I switch off the moment he wants me a match. Can't stand th shit-eating smirk. All his pleasure seems to be derived from getting another one over on the 'haters' - none from any genuine joy from an achievement.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 21, 2025 1:27 PM |
I am beginning to wonder about Juan Carlos Ferrero as a coach. To me, Alcaraz could have won today's match if he had had better coaching to make the necessary adjustments, especially with respect to serve returns. Also, Alcaraz seem so unfocused and even rattled at times, and he seemed to lose confidence in his abilities. Meanwhile, his team was right there at courtside, watching him flounder.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 21, 2025 1:49 PM |
Excellent gif OP! That's a lot of adjusting going on there. Very hot.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 21, 2025 2:09 PM |
R5, Alvarez didn't seem to ask his coaching box for help or even interact with them much. That's a big change from his previous matches. In the long run he has to rely on his own judgment.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 21, 2025 2:47 PM |
R5 I think Carlos should see this year out with Ferrero -and see if he can address these weaknesses. It might be a question of adding the the team, rather than changing completely. Sometimes, you throw the baby out with the bath water. Look at the clusterfuck of Rune's past 2 years... only to revert back to his original coach.

I suspect novaxx will wothdraw fro. AO . He k ows only native Carloswill succumb to his trickery and he can't get away with these shenanigans when playing Zcerev or Sinner. Alcaraz is too nice, too gullible, too naive
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 21, 2025 9:54 PM |
R24, itās true, he might withdraw, but Djokovic has an advanced catalogue of dark arts. It goes far beyond MTOs. During last nightās match he consistently varied his playing style and Alcarez couldnāt adjust quickly enough. If Djokovic was a few years younger heād figure out how to defeat Sinner. Itās too big an ask now.

Which white ATP players have yellow skin?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 22, 2025 12:27 AM |
Say what you like about Djokovic, his focus and mentality is A1. When I watch him, he always seems able to go into a focused space when playing. Can you teach that? I don't know, there's probably a limit to what sports psychologists can achieve. He definitely takes certain performance enhancing drugs though. Likely something akin to speed which has been used for focus by soldiers.

by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 22, 2025 12:54 AM |
Iāve been out of the tennis loop for a long time now but have gotten back into it this and last week with the Australian Open.
I see that there are ācoachesāā pods on court for each player - is this something new? All that I remember was that players were penalised if the umpire saw that they were getting coaching from their coaches, usually sitting in the stands.
Was there a change in rules and the ATP or whatever gave in to reality and made courtside coaching OK?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 22, 2025 1:18 AM |
"The ITA in October announced more relaxed rules surrounding the coaching players are allowed to receive during matches. Under the new rules, coaches are allowed to communicate with players verbally or via hand signals at any time ā except during live points."
So the AO is the first slam trying this out. They have a screen with player stats in there too.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 22, 2025 3:33 AM |
R39, I agree about Djokovic's ability to focus, and I think it's also his skillful managing of the ebbs and flows of a match. He's very adept at rationing his energy, going into a higher gear at those crucial times to seize the momentum of a match.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | January 22, 2025 3:39 AM |
He also absorbs energy from the very air around him and the water he ingests.

I'm not the OP but this is a gay site and we don't want to have to look at females. We want to see cock and ass. OP does an excellent job of selecting the image for these threads. Although I still remember the thread which had Margaret Court as the linked image in it (she a nasty, homophobic cunt who loathes gay people if you don't know who she is). That was very unpleasant having to look at that cunt for weeks on end.

Ahhh it was you - you're very naughty R54. Margaret Court indeed! I bloody HATE those shirtless Djokovic pics because he's such a batshit crazy cunt and so gross!
Go to Reddit or some other lesbian site R52. There are plenty of them. This is a gay homosexual website and we want cock 24/7/365 and we want lots of it. This thread is called "The Gays and Tennis" and is a long standing DL tradition. R53 has an excellent suggestion for you.

PS - who is that in OP's gif?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 22, 2025 5:50 AM |
R51/R56, his last name is in the file name of the linked pic. He is Tomas Machac aka Legz+ around these parts. He reminds me of dwarf actor Peter Dinklage.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 22, 2025 5:58 AM |
[quote] I bloody HATE those shirtless Djokovic pics because he's such a batshit crazy cunt and so gross!
Thatās why I do it. I know many on these threads find him gross. I find him repulsive as well. One must confront and acknowledge that which one finds abhorrent in order to become stronger.
[quote] That was very unpleasant having to look at that cunt for weeks on end.
I think I posted the Margaret Court thread between majors, so it was relatively slow. I have my settings with link previews disabled. Thus no Margaret and her turkey-like neck for weeks after finding the right picture.

I'm really glad I didn't stay up for the Sinner match v. Demon - yikes. I wish one women's semi was during the day, so I wouldn't have to stay up so late (if I do).

Tony Jones is a known fool, but he really didn't mean any harm with his heckling of Novak. It's his brand of cringe inducing humour. Nobody laughs with him, but rather at him. Aussies are known for taking the absolute piss out of everybody - it's basically how we show we care. However, I really liked Shelton's comment. I do think our broadcasters need to step up professionally and stop trying so hard to get laughs from the crowd. Get facts from the players, interesting quotes. Feature Jelena Dokic more prominently - she's an amazing host and commentator.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 23, 2025 1:52 AM |

Shelton mentioned the on-court interview of Learner Tien. I hadn't watched it before. But it indeed was unprofessional and just weird. The strange interviewer didn't really ask Tien any questions instead he just made weird statments and offered non-sequitors. He then pushed the microphone in Tien's face who had no idea what to say.

First, I had no idea who he was. And I watch a LOT of tennis.
Second, it was bizarre that he said that no one would be rooting for Shelton in the next round. It wasn't offensive or anything. It was just weird. Slightly off.

Win or lose, I just want to see her play well in the final. She really locked up during her other Slam final v. Sloane Stephens. I think she's got a chance vs. Sabs. I certainly would bet on Sabs and it will be a tall order, but I said the same thing vs. Swiatek.

R141 it would be a huge upset if he didn't win.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | January 24, 2025 5:47 AM |
That match really doesn't auger well for The RFC in the final - he's progressively played worse each round - struggled to assert himself for 2 sets against Humbert and for 3 against Tommy. He was really quite fortunate to win that set over Novaxx - who was serving poorly for the first 2 games, and then was clearly hampered physically towards the end of the set.
I'd possibly even favour Shelton against Zverev should he pull a rabbit out of the hat against Sinner.

So, Djoko says in his presser that 'he may not be back' ... so I'm guessing he basically wants to retire immediately after his next Slam victory where he clinches the title from Margaret Court.... he'll run hisself into the ground trying, but he'll get it at some point...

by Anonymous | reply 159 | January 24, 2025 9:29 PM |
That's why I can't rule him out in the next year or two at least. He did win the Olympics. He won over Alcaraz and kept it close with Zverev despite being injured enough that he had to retire. If that injury heals, not a lot of reason he can't keep things close and maybe win another one.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | January 24, 2025 9:33 PM |
That's one of the hard things about the majors when you get older -- you have to play HARD two or three or four matches in a row, best three out of five. It gets harder to keep the body together.

Also, I think the women should have swapped dresses before tonight's match. The yellow would look lovely against Madison's skin tone, and the green would suit Sabalenka's colouring better. The yellow washes her out and makes her look a little beefy.

"[R209], perversely, Zverev is not aggressive enough as a player. He refuses to step forward and dominate matches."
He gets pushy and tentative on his forehand at the worst time. He's playing Sinner - who is just a beast right now. There's no point being tentative and hitting not-fully-committed, mid-pace forehands. Beating Sinner demands that you take it to him. Zed shouldn't be worried about errors - they'll come. He has to keep on hitting big like he can. If he goes down, he should no down swinging and playing boldly.

I knew Sinner would be great way back in 2017. I thought the same thing about baby Rafa, Novak and Tsonga (okay, got that one wrong). All had that It Factor.
I love Sinner's game, but I do get why people think he's boring. It's why we need more Carlos/Sinner matches. Carlos brings the pop, Sinner the steady.
Anyway, huge congrats for Sinner. RFC will continue to be the best player not to win a slam and I am fine with that.

Su Wei Hseih is such an original. Much doubles success obviously, but it was sometimes a real treat to watch her in singles when she was in the top 50 ā at least in matches where she wasnāt getting totally blown off the court. She played like Radwanska but somehow was more of a gadfly with more trickery and sleight of hand. Her backswing always looks like sheās going to go for a wicked drop shot, but then lo and behold she rips it up the line (ārips itā being relative) with her elbows tucked into her ribcage. You could see how much her style would visibly infuriate Serena or e.g. Pliskbot.

There's always an ongoing tennis thread, R323. The next "big" tournament that DL will collectively watch and spend a lot of time on is probably Indian Wells, followed thereafter by Miami - both in March. But, sometimes smaller tournaments will get higher-than-expected comments. You just have to continuously check the current tennis thread. There's always at least a bit of discussion going on. The Gays and Tennis OP (OPs?) do a very good job of making sure there is a current thread.

Iāve been out of the tennis loop for a long time but this year I watched the AO for the whole two weeks - Iām in Sydney and between contracts so no timezone issues and lots of free time.
I noticed that people are talking about āthe happy slamā - is that something new? Because all that I saw were a bunch of drunk brogans paying AUD700+ per ticket and applauding double faults, plus members of Melbourneās many ethnic groups cheering on their heroes and doing the same thing.
What with the above and the screeching and the grunting, the only positive that I took away was Jelena Dokicās commentary - in my opinion, she rocks.
Did I miss something? Iām an eldergay and often went down to Kooyong when the AO was on grass, ditto the NSW open in Sydney at White City. Perhaps Iām just a relic. Fire away.

Any fans of the "Nothing Major" podcast with Isner, Querrey, Johnson and Sock? I don't follow it as regularly as I do Roddick's "Served," but I enjoy the occasional episode. It's not as bro-y as I was worried it might be and it's nice to see the camaraderie. Plus, I find myself low-key crushing on Steve Johnson. He probably doesn't have the career stats to get in the TV commentary game, but I did his vibe.

Stevie Johnson, I know what you mean--he's kind of hot, right? Seems sensitive, too. Jack Sock comes off as unbelievably dumb, though. I know these guys aren't rocket scientists, but holy shit he is really dumb.
I think Isner comes off very well, esp when he hosts. You can tell he's experienced. (He's done some TC, right?) And Sam is irreverent, which is fun. There are some fun insights about the Tour, and it's funny when they crack each other up.

Seems like the wheels are coming off for Tiafoe.
Donāt know whatās up with him but heās a pretty cocky guy (like how a year or so ago when he dumped his coach he started talking about needing a powerhouse coach, as though he's in that league.)
Iāve always liked him, though, and would like to see him turn it around and discover some consistency.

R470 Big Foe also made no friends when he made the comment about being frustrated about losing against 'clowns' on the ATP - implying any players out the Top 20.

I think those nasal strips widen the nostrils and increase airflow to improve breathing. Alcaraz caught a cold after the Australian Open so I guess that's why he's wearing it

Neither Sinner nor Alcaraz is gay or gives off any gay vibes. My radar does not ping with either players
by Anonymous | reply 545 | February 11, 2025 11:37 AM |
It's not so much that Alcaraz pings as that he's so willing to put himself out there as a sex object. Doesn't seem to be limited to the gays among Kids Today, it's just an extension of look-at-me Insta culture.

R546. I am lucky to spend a lot of time in Europe....and Alcaraz is just another hot-blooded Spaniard. You can see dozens everyday in every beach in Southern Europe. Just sit in a cafe near a beach on a hot summer day and you see several Alcaraz-es.... t
by Anonymous | reply 548 | February 11, 2025 12:16 PM |
R548 I completely agree with you pn Alcaraz. On Sinner however, I think there is a high chance that he might be gay. The whay he hugged Anna and the kiss he gave her just confirmed that for me

by Anonymous | reply 553 | February 12, 2025 4:01 AM |
R550 I donāt read much into it. If he was really gay and closted, he wouldnāt have done that (plus he is a spaniard). I mean Jannik WOULD NEVER, cause he got things to hide! I think Anna was never really his girlfriend, at least on his part.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | February 12, 2025 7:32 AM |

Lil' Diego has just started probably the last match of his ATP career at home in Buenos Aires. Fittingly, against Chilean man mountain Nicolas Jarry.
