Since "Rafe" is the P.I., the correct wording would be that Rafe took on E.J. as a client since E.J. has noted, a number of times, that he hired Rafe to find Sloan. A minor thing, but typical of the sloppiness of the writing team.

I agree about the scenes between Marlena and Leo. They are among the best that this show has offered, and these two pros consistently display a wonderful chemistry whenever they are teamed.
