I don't think he's stupid about the CCTV cameras - that's why he had the mask.
Presumably he's been broken by UHC terms - family members' deaths or something else. That's why he inscribed the bullets.
He's not stupid - but he's so broken he's definitely, what the fuck do I have to lose? He knows he will probably get caught - and doesn't care.
I think this is brave as hell. History is FULL of social activists and those fighting for human and civil rights being killed in cold blood. VERY few right-wingers have been targeted.

[quote] It Might Seem Obvious What Happened to the UnitedHealthcare CEO. Don’t Be So Sure.
A gunman dressed in dark clothing and wearing a mask over his lower face ambushed UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan, where Thompson’s company was hosting a conference. The New York Police Department said the shooting was a “targeted attack” and that the gunman remains at large, but few other details have been released.
Surveillance video captured the moment the shooter calmly approached Thompson, pointed a pistol equipped with a silencer, fired multiple shots, and fled on an electric bike. Police are now combing through video footage to track him down, including at a nearby Starbucks the shooter visited.
Many who noted the details of the shooting had an immediate question: Is this what a professional hit looks like in real life? The NYPD has said nothing of the sort, but that didn’t stop speculation from running rampant online. Dennis Kenney, a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice who has decades of expertise studying professional killers, has a unique perspective on that.
He’s spent years dispelling myths about contract killings born of movies and Law & Order episodes. He told me he found aspects of the attack peculiar and agreed to talk to me while emphasizing that it’s too early to draw definitive conclusions about a crime for which very little information has been released. Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.
Slate: What were your first impressions when you heard the details of the shooting Wednesday?
Dennis Kenney: The first thing that’s unusual is that the shooter appeared to have a silencer. They’re not impossible to get, but they’re not readily available. The second thing is that he appeared to have inside information on the victim’s location. He knew where to wait and when to wait. The fact that he used the silencer didn’t make sense to me at first, until I saw that the shooting took place at about 6:30 in the morning. Generally, if it was a midmorning sort of thing, you’d want a gun that made a lot of noise to scare observers off. But obviously at that time, no one was around. It also suggested that the urgency of the shooting was important. CEOs of health care companies are just not that hard to find in isolated settings. So the fact that he chose to do it in midtown Manhattan was a little bit unique.
Police called it a “brazen targeted attack.” You’ve studied contract killings and so-called hit men and sought to dispel myths about these kinds of crimes. What do you think of speculation that this was a hit?
I think it’s pretty unlikely. My understanding is the CEO was being investigated for insider trading and some other financial violation. The fact that he ran a health care company—they tend to leave a lot of angry people in their wake. So, it seemed to be someone who knew what they were doing, but the idea of a professional hit man, those are pretty few and far between. So I would think more likely it was somebody with a particular grudge that had access to inside information to know where to be and when to be there.
Do contract killings usually play out in such dramatic fashion?
A professional hit man would probably prefer to do something less public with limited exposure. Doing it in the middle of midtown—there’s just too many things that can go wrong, so you probably prefer generally not to do it there. However, if it was time sensitive, then that would make a difference. There’s a range of hit men, so it could be somebody that was hired, but it’s unlikely.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | December 5, 2024 5:49 PM |
I'm 20-35, but I can pass for 18
by Anonymous | reply 8 | December 5, 2024 5:49 PM |
Is there any other reason you think it’s unlikely?
This obviously was not the target’s usual routine. A professional would generally try to catch him in his regular routine in a place where the exposure of the shooter is minimized so that the risk of being caught or observed is pretty low. Manhattan, particularly in midtown, you’ve got cameras everywhere. I understand that they’ve got some fairly decent shots of the guy’s face while he was in Starbucks or something like that nearby. The exposure was fairly high, and most professionals don’t like that amount of risk. Again, unless it was time sensitive—there could be any number of reasons why it was important that it happened that day.
Has technology, such as surveillance cameras, changed the way professional killers operate?
That’s hard to know. Like most businesses, there’s a wide range of professionals. You’ve got some that are much lower-end and others that are much more skilled and with better equipment. So, I would guess this person, if they’re hired, they would be relatively on the low end. The fact that it appeared in the video that the guy’s gun might have jammed is also a little bit of a concern for a professional. You make sure your equipment works.
What kind of crime would a very public shooting like this generally suggest? Does it fit a particular profile?
The thing that struck me was the fact that he knew where he was going to be and when he was going to be there. Generally, you get that information by observing the individual. You find their schedule and their routine, and then you intercept them somewhere along the line on their routine. This was obviously not a routine setting. So he had to have some reason to believe that Thompson was going to be coming out of that door at an approximate time to be able to lay in wait. Because it’s Manhattan, standing around waiting risks the likelihood of being challenged by a cop or security guard coming by, which suggests that he had reason to know when the guy was going to be coming out. It suggests some sort of inside information.
What are some common misconceptions people have of contract killers? How do professionals differ from portrayals we often see in movies and TV?
I don’t watch that many of those kinds of movies. Most of the highly skilled folks that I’m aware of are assassins for government agencies or something such as that. But when you look at even those levels of individuals, there have been several attempted assassinations in D.C. of government officials by other government officials, and generally the only reason you know about them is that they were bungled. It’s a fairly difficult thing to do.
Do law-enforcement agencies differentiate between a professional hit and other types of murders?
For the most part, the investigation is done the same way. If this was a professional, then it’s obviously someone who had reason to want Thompson dead. Because he ran an insurance company, you would look at everything from individuals who have been turned down for insurance coverage and lost their spouse as a result of it. That would be one thing the police would look for. They’ll first look for the reason why he was killed. And once you come up with the reason, then it’s much easier to find the person responsible for it.

Some idiots on this thread and the one prior think that murders the 1960s led to civil rights legislation. Legislation happened due to Democratic Presidents (Johnson) and Congress. Do I really need to say this? People really believe that murdering health care execs will lead to health care reform or universal coverage?
No wonder Trump won.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 5, 2024 6:21 PM |
Who knows? Maybe this publically unlamented CEO's death might make a change that could benefit his and his company's victims. From the Times:
As one of the nation’s largest health insurers, covering more than 50 million people, UnitedHealthcare has battled a range of complaints and investigations from patients, doctors and lawmakers for its denial of medical claims.
Those practices may face new scrutiny after law enforcement officials said that the bullet casings found at the site of the killing of the UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson on Wednesday appeared to have messages, including the words “deny” and “delay,” written on them.

[quote]He’s spent years dispelling myths about contract killings born of movies and Law & Order episodes.
I'm not going through all 600 posts on the original thread, but I assume someone has pointed out the reality that "hit men" don't actually exist, as noted in the movie of that name with Glen Powell. The only "myth" to dispel is that they exist in the first place.
To state the exceedingly obvious exception: NYC's very, VERY long slate of Mafia hits. But this ain't one of those, nor is there evidence that it's a contract killer in the first place. The most likely perp is someone who lost a loved one because UH refused coverage, and that someone went to considerable lengths to learn how to use a silencer-equipped gun, along with detective techniques to determine his mark's real-time location.
R17, I'd suggest not feeding the trolls. They know the history of civil rights legislation full well, and that no murders in the '60s led to it. Also, the killer is an unlikely Trump voter for one excellent reason: he has functioning brain cells.

Unless the killer is a seasoned professional, rest assured, he or she will most definitely get caught.
I understand that the NYPD, along with LAPD, have more problems than a 200 questions math exam, however, they are two of the best police forces we have in the United States, and with some help from the FBI, the killer will almost certainly be apprehended.
Again, unless you’re a real pro, it’s almost completely impossible to get away with murder in 2024, ESPECIALLY in surveillance ridden mid-town, unless you’re Donald J. Trump.

When did Charlie become such a corporate boot-licker?
It shouldn't stop here - Wall Street assholes have crashed the economy multiple times and got little or no sentences.
These healthcare execs know full well they are killing people with their policies and they don't care. As long as the share price increases and profitability are there - they do not care.
The huge problem the last 40 years has been this 'oh I was just doing what I was hired to do' and completely divorcing themselves of their impact on the greater society.
They have tens if not over hundred million dollars - but i's not enough. They need MORE MORE MORE. It's sick and it's a system that needs to be broken - the first is to scare them through loss of life.
There is NO justice otherwise - they don't get harsh prison sentences or come up on charges at all. Look at Senator Scott and his massive medicare fraud - he walks around scot free.
Personally, I hope this gives a lot more vigilantes the boost to do more. These people need to PAY for the misery they've inflected for their own profit.

If I were in the mafia, were involved in corporate insider trading, and didn’t want someone else implicated in it to testify and blab about me, here’s what I would do.
First, I would hire a hitman from Eastern Europe or Italy. He’s in, he’s out, he’s unreachable by US LE.
Second, I’d tell the hitman to make it look like a grudge so that the investigation would be misdirected. A health insurance executive makes this incredibly easy.
I’m not saying it’s what happened. I’m saying that just because some evidence seems to suggest a grudge, don’t assume it was one.

This will be interesting to watch.

One thing that's very clear is that the assailant wanted to make a splash. A public killing right before the annual shareholders meeting where in two hours the victim was to give a speech announcing a record $450B profit. Engraved bullet casings.
I am wondering if the killer might want to get caught. Some of his mistakes were really egregious: dropping a cell phone, water bottle, and candy wrapper, and letting his face be seen on one occasion at the hostel. It's almost as though he deliberately left clues. If he has a cause and he's on a campaign, the investigation/manhunt is going to garner more attention. I wouldn't be surprised at all if some sort of a manifesto appears online.

Here's what I want to know. How did the shooter know the CEO was going to be in NYC, how did he know when he would be walking to the Hilton? Why was the security team traveling with the CEO not with him when he was shot? He had been getting threats. He had security. WTF? Yes this was a hit, but the shooter seems to have known a lot about his target before pulling the trigger.

The reaction isn't dissimilar to the reaction to the assassination of Shinzo Abe two years ago in Japan. People looked at the assassin's grievances and decided he had some points, which led to Japan restricting the activities of the Unification Church. (The assassin's elderly mother had given all of her assets to the church, to which Abe had deep ties.)
Abe's political party also suffered losses in the next election.

The guy in the picture who is smiling without a mask does look like Jakey!!!
So this picture of him smiling without his mask was taken at the hostel where he stayed? And they're convinced he stayed at this hostel? They also have a lead on the gun. Said they found a seller in Connecticut and the gun is kind of rare.
If all of these things are true they will catch him withing the next48 hours or at least have a name. Which pisses me off. Let's think about all the things this guy did wrong. But not yet. Using an unusual gun was stupid if he did in fact use one. He had a burner phone and was talking on that phone shortly before he shot the CEO. Who was he talking to? Was there a second person involved to notify him when the CEO was leaving his hotel? And why did he ditch the phone in the alleyway? Or did he accidently drop it. They will absolutely find out who he was talking to on that phone and where the person was .
He had a water bottle with a smudged finger print. But. If he was drinking from that bottle they will like find a miniscule amount of DNA. They tracked him through Central Park to 85th street. He didn't have the backpack. They're now searching the park for it. WTF did he go t o Starbucks?? He stayed at a hostel. So he didn't have a lot of money. Or did he think he could evade detection at the hostel instead of staying in a hotel.? There are so many fucking hotels in NYC. He had fake ID. So he shoots the CEO walks across the street starts running cut's through an alley, grabs a bike and rides through Central Park. When they pick him up on camera he's out of the park on 85th. Did he ditch his outfit? If he had boots, pants and another hoodie in the backpack, he could have altered his appearance. He didn't do enough. He should have worn a wig. Should have altered his complexion. Something. Changing footwear was important.

I'm not gonna blame Biden, but as I read about him taking measures to possibly pardon people like Liz Cheney and Fauci and others as a precautionary measure, and I have read other articles where his staff is trying to protect gains made for the environment, etc. all I am saying is if Joe and his staff have a "to do list" I sincerely hope they take measures to do whatever they can to protect healthcare. Pre existing conditions, Medicare, ACA, and the basic benefit menu that health plans have to provide so they aren't just junk insurance. I won't blame him for anything. I think he did an outstanding job, and I hate that he has such low approval ratings and has practically been erased the past couple of weeks. I think the outgoing administration will do what it can before they leave. I just hope Healthcare is part of that agenda. They actually have until January 3rd when the new Congress is sworn in. And if they think they can get anything done with Congress they have until noon on January 20th. Lame Ducks can get stuff done.

"Nearly one in five insured adults experienced claim denials during a 12-month period, according to a 2023 KFF survey. Those with job-based insurance or Affordable Care Act policies ran into this problem about twice as often as those covered by Medicare or Medicaid, whose denial rates were around one in 10.
Last year, UnitedHealthcare settled a case brought by a severely ill college student in Pennsylvania who claimed the company denied coverage for drugs determined necessary by his doctors, leaving him with a medical bill of more than $800,000. The lawsuit, which was chronicled by ProPublica, uncovered the lengths to which the insurer goes to reject claims, including burying medical reports and relying on rubberstamped recommendations from doctors paid by the company."

by Anonymous | reply 188 | December 6, 2024 1:55 PM |
The no we can't do that crowd is the Insurance lobby pushing back and promoting false information to scare people. telling them all kinds of shit. If we had "Medicare for all" we'd be in much better shape and it would not eliminate private insurance companies. Medicare subcontracts with private insurers. The best argument for single pay or for Medicare for all is the portability argument. Our system of tying your insurance to your job is archaic. It is inefficient. It doesn't work. And the uninsured end up at the ER with healthcare issues that are more expensive to treat because they waited too long to get care. Just remember. Someone always pays. When hospitals have to treat indigent patients, we pay. When hospitals go bankrupt and have to close their doors in rural areas, we pay. We culd very easily fix our healthcare system. We know what we have to do. But we lack the will. The stakeholders who have a disproportionate amount of influence are blocking any attempts to do what is necessary.

You don’t have to buy it, R191. We’re waiting to hear how you’ll change it.
But you’ll need some kind of coverage in the meantime and it’s not coming from Washington. And even if it did, could you afford to buy it?
Obamacare has made it possible for individuals to buy coverage. A friend just paid her first premium for a mid-level individual plan in Massachusetts, where health insurance is mandated. Her premium costs her $1080 a month or just shy of $13,000 a year. She’s between $200,000/yr jobs and can afford it. Not everyone can.

[quote] I'm not seeing that as a reflexive reaction, [R184].
It's totally a reflexive reaction. The first things people come up with are why single payer can't possibly work in the US-- Who's going to pay for it? Taxes will go up! Waits to see providers are too long! We're too varied a country!
---ALL OF IT BS but fed to the public over decades by the insurance industry
by Anonymous | reply 194 | December 6, 2024 2:27 PM |
R193, you're waiting to hear how I will change it? What are you asking, exactly? Look, healthcare doesn't work for practically anyone. And if Dump cuts the ACA, it will all get worse (among everything else). Yes, people (especially the Dump voters) are going to see deprivations they never dreamed of. And that will make a difference in their attitude. People go from president to the other, and as soon as ther shit hits the fan (as it did with Dump abd his bungling/inaction over COVID) people react.
And that also answers R194.

If you cant afford it, you get federal subsidies to get you to the point that the cost is less than 9% of your income. Apparently that's the magic number of insurance affordability.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | December 6, 2024 2:57 PM |
Yes, the ACA is great for getting people onto an insurance plan. But deductibles can be sky-high (mine is $9,500 with a $1,000/month premium), so a lot of people are still skipping medical care. At least preventive care is mostly covered (though my doctor's office has managed to tack on"administrative fees" for screenings and immunizations.
That needs to be fixed. Unfortunately, Trump will "fix" it by allowing plans that are appreciably cheaper but don't cover much and send medical bankruptcies skyrocketing again.

[quote] But deductibles can be sky-high (mine is $9,500 with a $1,000/month premium), so a lot of people are still skipping medical care.
That was by design. Instead of high monthly premiums, the cost was shifted to the deductible to use when you're actually sick

I could see the guy getting away with it, whoever he is.
Aside from the planning/premeditation, which was meticulous but probably not genius-level, he got lucky evading the scene quickly on the bike without being tackled or chased. Post-getaway, now that he might be trying to disappear into the NYC mass [if he's still in NYC], he's aided by the outpouring of public sentiment against the target. Even if he's not regarded as a perverse/dark "folk hero," there's been enough "just sayin'"-type reaction that I think it aids his flight. People are not scared of this guy and don't perceive him as an imminent threat to public safety, as they would some other armed-and-dangerous suspect-at-large. All of these factors are tailwinds that, taken together, could keep him from being apprehended quickly.
If I saw a guy fitting the perp's description streaking across my lawn, on the run Ferris Bueller-style, would I call the cops? I probably would, but not right away. I'd finish making dinner and watch "Jeopardy!" first.

I seem to remember an article that said that exact thing, R210, that she asked him to show his face so she could compare it with the ID he used and let the camera get a good shot. It obviously didn’t hurt that he gave her a dazzling smile but she was at work and doing her job. Which doesn’t mean they couldn’t flirt, just that flirting wasn’t where his focus was.

Surveillance footage obtained by the Washington Post shows the suspect leaving midtown Manhattan's 57th Street subway station for the F train at 6:15 a.m. ET. The suspect's clothing matches the images released Wednesday by the NYPD.
After leaving the station, the suspect is next seen at 6:17 a.m. inside a Starbucks coffee shop on Sixth Avenue.
Police said the shooter arrived at the scene on foot just several minutes before Thompson showed up outside the Hilton Hotel. Thompson was visiting New York City from Minnesota for an investor conference.

The suspect then approached Thompson from behind and shot him in the back and leg, police said. The gun appeared to be fitted with a silencer and seemed to jam, a law enforcement official told CNN, but the suspect was able to fix it and continued firing.
The shooter headed north on foot before getting on a bicycle and riding toward Central Park, where he was last seen.
During an NYPD press conference on Wednesday, police initially reported the suspect had taken an electric Citi Bike, but the company, owned by Lyft, later said the suspect had not used one of those bikes.
Sources told ABC News that the shooter was also caught on a surveillance camera outside a public housing project on the Upper West Side, at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. The NYPD has now reportedly sought a search warrant for that location.

One thing I know is this guy is effing brilliant. My personal feeling is this is a vigilante whose smarts far outweigh those who are trying to find him. I truly don’t think this was a hit, but I guess I could be wrong. The planning is unreal, I would not be surprised if he left fake evidence to mislead investigators. He won’t be found. So many clues as to what he was doing beforehand but very few re what he did afterward.

That will come later. Taking down this CEO required resources—someone needed to inform the shooter exactly when he would be on the street. The shooter's gun is rare and has a built-in silencer. He arrived on a Greyhound bus and stayed at a hostel, both of which have lenient ID requirements. If this takes off like school shootings, then killers will choose softer targets. For example, lower-level employees like the VP for Claim Denial for the Midwest or an office shooting. Some denied policyholders will die anyway, they may as well take one with them.
Let's not the 10%, the professional class that supports the 1%. They have become well-off--2 figure millionaires. Many specialize in the healthcare industry. So, a claim denied for experimental cancer treatment arrow → neighbor works in health care consulting → victim of opportunity for a sick person.

From Google AI
The Latin phrase closest to "Kill 'em all. Let their god sort them out" is "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius", which translates to "Kill them. For the Lord knows who are His.". Explanation: This phrase is historically attributed to a Crusader leader during the Albigensian Crusade, where the idea was that even if innocent people were killed, God would be able to identify his true followers.

The backpack is an old model designed for photographers. The shooter probably wanted it because of the padding (for camera gear) and got it used.
NYPD is probably slow to disclose things so as not to alert the shooter, but if he's smart is in Canada or in a far part of the country by now.

A disgruntled employee makes sense. Because they would be familiar with the annual meeting and know it was at the Hilton. Might have even picked up gossip about the CEO to know when he was arriving.
But if it was a possible disgruntled employee they would have a name by now and it would have leaked. So I have to lean towards an outsider. No one seems to know who it is.

They are perhaps thinking if he hasn’t, sees it, and thinks authorities are focused elsewhere, he’ll make a mistake - such as appearing less fully disguised on NYC’s camera infested streets - and be tracked and captured.

by Anonymous | reply 343 | December 7, 2024 12:39 PM |
I actually believe he has left the area. For that very reason. Too many cameras. I wonder if he is from Minnesota. I also wonder if he did a test run and cased out the environment several times before he did the deed. It was planned out, that's obvious. I'm still curious about the phone they found. Even if it was a burner he should not have left it behind. Anything he discards is evidence including the water bottles. The guy was silly to go to Starbucks to get energy bars and water. The Korean stores or bodegas or a fucking drug store would have been sufficient. And he could have got them in a different neighborhood altogether. Dumping the backpack without destroying it, and whatever was in it, was another dumb move. If he'd changed jackets and those distinctive shoes, in Central Park, he could have walked out and caught a cab and no one would have noticed.

by Anonymous | reply 351 | December 7, 2024 1:32 PM |
UHC employees have no love for their former boss:
“Thompson took massive pay outs while we at the bottom had to work harder and longer,” one employee told me. “Meanwhile Witty brought in AI to learn from us. So they have the money for AI and massive bonuses, but we’re still using software that is massively behind the industry standard. They’ve been lying to us.”
Resentment for Thompson was widespread at the company, the employee said, citing an internal company announcement about his death that only garnered 28 comments despite being seen by 16,000 employees.

Interesting the first thing the CEOs have been doing is taking down their pictures from corporate websites. While this was panicky and pointless, it shows a nerve has been hit. They have had wealth and power, but not the fame and the issues that go with it that politicians and stars have. Now they will be spending a lot more on security, restricting their freedom of movement, looking over their shoulders and jumping when a door slams. It's not much, but it is something, till the next DDD happens.

Where did you read or hear about the backpack containing underwear?
by Anonymous | reply 444 | December 7, 2024 10:18 PM |
The shooter should have dumped the backpack, opened it up and threw it in the lake in Central Park. That way it would have been so completely contaminated they would have got no DNA from it.

Yes, R360. We were tougher back then.
When I describe to people what living in NYC was like, I tell them that as soon as I’d reach a crowded subway station, I’d immediately have to go on offensive rather than be forced to become defensive, because NYC was a zoo back then. You’d be an idiot to not get into ultra bitch face mode when commuting, because you understood that ANYTHING could happen unless you looked like someone not to be fucked with.
Eventually, New York became one of the safest cities in the world, so younger folks weren’t too worried about the possibility of being robbed at gun point or pick pocketed in a crowded subway car.
It’s all about context.

R375, that possibility isn’t as far fetched as you think it is.
He & his CEO colleagues were being investigated by the DoJ for insider trading, so he may have figured he was better off dead in order to provide for his boys.
I doubt this, since he probably wouldn’t have had to pay over the top fines, however, depending on his personal finances, he may have known that his estate had more money than he currently did.
by Anonymous | reply 462 | December 7, 2024 11:43 PM |
Exactly R462. This wasn't some good, well-meaning person of virtue. The dead CEO ticks all the boxes for ruthlessly screwing other people over in every way possible to enrich himself and those around him.
I looked it up and from his CEO job alone he earned $10.2 million per year. Big money. Big responsibility. Big risks. Big consequences.
It's no secret that US healthcare is in deep crisis. Perhaps this will act as a catalyst for the industry to take a good look at the way it operates. If not... this may not be the only CEO assassination...

Does what the cop is saying, that they have Boo’s name and aren’t releasing it because they want him to think he’s safer than he is, make any sense at all?
Isn’t that statement alone going to rocket around the internet in such a way that Boo can’t miss it? The cop would have to assume he has no internet access whatsoever, and not even one friend who knows what he did and stands ready to help him to the extent that they let him know his name is known.
by Anonymous | reply 469 | December 8, 2024 1:27 AM |

They have no name. They may have had several names that looked promising but were dead ends. They may have leads and tips they are running down. But right now they have no name. They're just making noise because they want it to look like they're making progress when the reality is that it has been 4 days now and they haven't got their man. This is 2024. They have cameras and technology and all kinds of shit and yet a man was gunned down in Manhattan early one morning, and the shooter got away. They will find him. Eventually. But any fool knows if a name were leaked it would be a game changer, so they're blowing smoke, because they have nothing.

I'm wondering what they might be, but accent doesn't quite fit the bill... Unless, the PD doesn't want vigilanteism, which doesn't make sense in this case. Folks from both the left and the right might line up to hand him roses before scorn or deportation.

Yesterday they were reviewing security camera footage from local businesses.

I just posted this in the other thread. Also want to add per R570, they are saying he boarded his exit bus up there. Port Authority Washington Heights? I had no idea there was a terminal up there. Anyway, thanks for the info. Keep us posted. They may find the bike or the gun up there.
Welp. So far the cops do not have the gun. The weapon used in the shooting. They do not have the bike and there is doubt that it was in fact an electric bike even though CNN keeps saying it was. They believe the bus he was on came from Atlanta, but do not know whether his personal trip originated in Atlanta. They have some photos they claim are of the shooter but everything from his bone structure (nose) to his eyes and brow is being disputed. Height too. They were not able to get the DNA they hoped for from the "evidence" he left behind and the single partial fingerprint on the bottle is smudged. They're hoping the public will claim him and name him because of the reward. My opinion? He is not an American. He was hired. The inscriptions on the bullet casings now seem to me to be a feint. I'm beginning to consider the wife even though at first I didn't. If not the wife someone who really wanted him dead. So if I'm working this case, I ask the question, "Cui bono?" Who benefits. That is my starting point. And I'd be going over his life with a microscope. Because the biggest piece of evidence is him, the d ead CEO.

R577: NYC is not that complicated. He figured out that there is more than one intercity bus station---not rocket science. Just a good guidebook or some online independent traveler blog tips. Ditto, Central Park.
He could have gotten on the bus to NYC at any number of points including places with hub airports like DC. According to PATH website the furthest he could go direct from Washington Heights would be Buffalo and vicinity including a connecting service into Ontario from Niagara Falls. The terminal has a surprisingly limited range of services---I would have expected routes into the Hudson Valley and service to Montreal.

Didn't Buffalo and NY get a ton of snow in the past couple of days? Isn't there a small airport with commuter planes to Toronto and Montreal from NYC?

He’s either Shawn Mendes or Timothee Chalamet- both very “ethnic” looking.

Monopoly money is very fitting as a message to vulture Capitalists that "we're on to you."

[quote] How many millions of dollars are being spent trying to apprehend this individual? Some levity would be appropriate.
R571, I think there's been plenty of levity displayed here. I think you meant a different word.

No. I meant levity.

TikTok wannabe revolutionaries thinking this will kick off a class war are very dumb and would never have the guts to pick up a gun and do it themselves.

For those interested in the cost of the manhunt, this was the AI-generated summation I got when I googled to learn how valuable United Healthcare is:
“According to recent information, UnitedHealthcare, which is part of UnitedHealth Group, is considered the 8th most valuable company in the world based on market capitalization, making it the largest healthcare company by revenue globally.”
Given how loudly money talks, I wouldn’t be surprised if cops investigating that particular crime would want it to look like no stone is going unturned.

Given that ranking, you'd think the company could kick in a little bit on the reward for finding the killer. But I guess that wouldn't look good on this quarter's balance sheet.

Yeah, r581, the GWB Bus Terminal seems an odd choice to leave NYC from. It has only a few intercity Greyhound buses, the rest are buses to northern New Jersey and Rockland County but I'm assuming he wasn't fleeing to Hackensack or Nyack. And I'm sure there are just as many cameras there as at the midtown bus terminal but a lot fewer people coming in and out making it easier to find him. Of course, if he arrived there a little after 7am the terminal crowds would have been at peak morning commute.
