they really need to ignore Trump and spend the whole convention presenting themselves as a party of action with vision. the rnc was nothing but emperor worship and trailer trash spectacle. nothing of substance. republicans can't talk about substance or vision because their policies are wildly unpopular with even their own voters. if democratic and republican policies are put side by side in plain language, support for the democratic platform would be utterly overwhelming. over and over and over and over and over again they need to hammer home exactly how and why they are the party that is behind the working class voter. but they won't. they'll come out and say the country and the economy is doing amazing and it'll blow up in their face because most people are living in hell.

I predict a lot of speeches will be written last minute. So we will see how those go. Lot of speakers may have to think up nice things to say about a nominee or VP they basically just met. Will be interesting.
I can't wait for Biden's speech as he hands off the nomination to his eventual successor. That will be emotional and expect standing ovations. People will have a moment of second guessing the calls for him to step down, but he'll mess up somewhere in the speech, reminding us why he had to go.

Wouldn't it be a HUGE plot twist if Joe Biden gave a speech to the convention, resigning as President on Monday?
Then it would be immediately followed by the swearing in of Kamala Harris as the 47th President of the Untied States, and our first female President.
Culminating on Thursday with her nomination to be the Democratic nominee for President?
Now THAT would be a convention!
Republicans would have a fucking heart attack!

Streisand is not scheduled to attend or perform (she did appear on Zoom the other night for 'Jewish Women for Harris' which raised a lot of money.
All the Democratic presidents will be in attendance except Carter, who turns 100 on October 1. He may do a 'zoom' greeting to the conventioneers, though (so it's been said). His grandson will be there to take his place in person.
For entertainment, there are rumors Beyonce will perform and they're working on getting Taylor Swift to close out the convention on Thursday night. She's no Hulk Hogan, but...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 18, 2024 1:54 AM |
Apparently, one night during the week they are going to pay tribute to the past 40 years of women on the ticket.
1984 - Geraldine Ferraro is the VP candidate, the first female VP candidate in US history.
2016 - Hillary Clinton is the Presidential candidate - first ever female Presidential candidate in US history.
2020 - Harris is the second female VP candidate, the first minority female candidate, first minority / female to be sworn in as VP.
2024 - Harris is the second female Presidential candidate, the first minority female candidate, the second minority Presidential candidate.
As it was said on MSNBC today - they want to emphasize this (especially) to the women voters in the country, and compare it to the Republican (all white men) party. If any female can still vote for Trump after the DNC, they really need a lobotomy.

[quote] Turncoat Teamsters President Sean O'Brien NOT invited to speak at DNC
DETROIT (AP) — Members of the Teamsters will host Vice President Kamala Harris for a roundtable discussion in the near future, but union President Sean O'Brien has yet to get an invitation to speak at next week's Democratic National Convention.
Kara Deniz, a spokeswoman for the 1.3 million member union, said in an email Friday that the Teamsters are working with Harris' campaign on dates for the roundtable.
But O'Brien, who angered some Democrats by speaking at the GOP convention last month, has not received a reply to his request to speak at the Democratic National Convention, which begins Monday in Chicago, Deniz said Friday night.
O'Brien made the request to the Democrats at the same time he asked Republicans, she said.
A person briefed on convention planning said Saturday that O'Brien will not speak, but the Teamsters will have a presence on the convention stage. The person, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly about the schedule, would not give further details.
Democrats have been the party of labor unions for decades, while Republicans largely have greeted them with hostility. Most major unions, including the AFL-CIO and the United Auto Workers, already have endorsed Harris.
But the Teamsters met with her GOP opponent, Donald Trump, in January, and O'Brien received a tepid reception when he spoke on the opening night of the Republican convention in Milwaukee. In his speech, O'Brien criticized both major political parties for not doing enough to help working people.
The Teamsters say the decision on a presidential endorsement will be made after the conventions.
Earlier this year, Trump sat down with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters in an effort to earn the union's support. Emerging from that meeting, Trump boasted that a significant chunk of union voters has backed him and said of a possible Teamsters endorsement, “Stranger things have happened.”
But in a Monday discussion on the social media platform X with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Trump praised Musk for firing workers who went on strike. Musk laughed and agreed with him. Although it wasn't clear what Trump was referring to, the statements brought rebukes from unions accusing Trump and Musk of being anti-labor.
The United Auto Workers even filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that statements from Trump and Musk interfered with workers who may want to join a union. The NLRB said it would investigate.
“Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in a statement.

Communists and socialist labels don't convey the menace they used to. That's living in the past...like 40-50 years ago. People are fucking tired of labels anyway. They just want government to work and GTF out of the way. So you can call her a communist or a socialist but if Kamala is gonna give me money to buy a house, or help out with the childcare and give me money for my kids, fuck a label. And fuck labels if Kamala wants to get rid of junk fees and lower the costs of healthcare. Shit. People travel more now. And you know we are aware of the way things work in Europe. We can go live in France or Sweden or Germany or WTF ever and get healthcare and family leave and great vacation time off. Our work weeks would be civilized and life would be a lot less fraught. So Trump can hurl all kinds of insults and as far as I see he is the real socialist subsidizing corporate welfare and giving the wealthy a free ride on taxes. Fuck all of them.

Correct. The amount of people may reach into the couple of thousands.
Still, I think they'll be overwhelmingly orderly, with, of course, the rare random disorderly ones getting their Fox News moments.
Seriously, if any protester thinks it will be a good idea to test or provoke the personnel of the Chicago Police Dept., they should eliminate that thought.
I'm not cheerleading for the police, I'm just saying that they'll go along to get along, but if you think they're going to allow disorderly conduct, guess again.

Many of those protesting don't even consider themselves Democrats. They have contempt for the party. Besides, the unavoidable presence of far-left demonstrators at any large, high-profile political event is almost a given these days and not likely to tarnish the image of the party. Let them protest, it's not going to change what happens inside the convention center. It's also not going to change the majority of votes for Kamala. And, be prepared for more protests at universities this fall. But, 78 days to the election. Full force for freedom, one day at a time.

It's not like anybody's going to ask me, but I think Kamala's campaign has proven one thing: Why do we need a long, protracted primary season anymore? Because I'm a democrat and programmed to expect the worst, I am amazed at how smooth this has been. I think in the future, just cut out the bullshit and just go straight to the big one. She's gotten good press and decent numbers and probably will get another boost from the convention.

Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina also need to be nixed as the first primaries. Those states make zero difference in the general election and entirely too much time and money is wasted on campaigning there b

I really hope they can get a black female historic figure to perform at the inauguration. Someone who has been through the struggle and can really pass the mantle. I love Beyonce, but enough already.
Aretha was always the go to person for these kinds of things. Since she is no longer here, they should aim for Dionne Warwick or Diana Ross.

I like Queen Latifah.
She's not "historical," but she has a good story to tell, being a black lesbian rapper/actress.
Plus, she's a good singer too.
Her performance of "I Know Where I've Been" from the movie Hairspray, would be perfect for the occasion.

I've been saying this for the past few weeks. Stepping into the election just four weeks ago worked out the best for her. No 'campaign fatigue' from her and Walz, not campaign fatigue for potential voters - she's a breath of fresh air, energetic and on her game. She and her team has taken advantage of this wonderful situation. The GOP, on the other hand, well...
I hope this is the way of the future Presidential campaigns. We really don't need a 15 month roll out. 15 weeks is perfect.

I really agree, but the unique circumstances that led up to her nomination probably call for a show of unity among the older politicians involved, and having them all speak at the convention is a passing the torch together crescendo through the week. I'm so tired of celebrities in politics: if they want to help fundraise and promote candidates on social media, great--but once they start writing op eds and showing up on the stage at conventions, not great. I see Netanyahu and some willing soldiers of the IDF exterminating a segment of the Palestinian people, including children.
Note I didn't say "I see the Jewish People" or "Israel" doing that. Not because I'm trying to be careful; hiding a bad faith heart.
I don't say that because I know many, many Israelis and Jews are sickened by what Netanyahu is doing and want him to stop.

Jesse Jackson doesn't look good.

Awww. I love Jesse Jackson. And yes, he absolutely knows what's going on. Parkinsons is a bitch. Wonderful to see him! I wish they'd made a little video of some of his greatest hits. Some of the best speeches I've ever seen to this day.

Jackson loved it.
The old battle ax has an ego as big as a house.
And what r229 said. I was at a speech he gave and it was a barnburner, expiring thing.

See I remember 1984 and 1988 and Jesse was a divisive force and he was all about himself. Shameless self promoter. He was always an opportunistic asshole. As for wheeling him on, why didn't they just show him on the big screen off stage and he could have waved and smiled. I've never been a Jesse fan.

Wonder if Guv Shapiro got a few BJ offers in the men's room before he joined Joy Ann Reid ? You know the young gaylings in at the convention are propositioning him.
As a side note, Shapiro would have made just as great a candidate as Walz for VP. He knows how to talk to Americans. I hope he considers a run in 8 years.

Kamala Harris' sister Maya is a very impressive woman in the Kamala ads. I enjoy the way she talks - could listen to her for hours. I hope she has a place in her admin.

OK, this is all good about Kamala but by now, shouldn't they be building up to Mighty Joe?
Mom and daughter are nice, but this should be for Thursday.

by Anonymous | reply 478 | August 20, 2024 2:31 AM |
No, r425, you misunderstand me.
Since Reagan, Republicans have behaved as though our flag belongs ONLY to them (Admit it: When you see a flag outside a house, you figure the inhabitants are pro-Trump).
Republicans chant "USA! USA!" with a xenophobic arrogance, not a genuine pride in our founding principles.
Republicans demand the national anthem be played and stood for, no matter the Republican attempt at insurrection.
That all is to say, if you haven't noticed that our national symbols (not to mention we Democrats allegedly don't want you to say "Merry Christmas!") have been hijacked by the un-American Right-Wing, you haven't been paying attention.
That we have had a Democratic President for the last four years is a reasonable riposte, except that Joe has had other priorities, not least of which immediately were Covid and Afghanistan.
But somehow Kamala and Coach Walz have lit a spark of promise that includes not only the solid achievements people seek, but also the national symbols to which people respond.
So to all Republicans I say: "USA! USA!" 😈🗽

I see Kamala sitting there. And I think Trump was at his convention a few times.
So this might just be some weird thing I invented in my head, but wasn't it a thing at one point that the nominee never appeared at the convention until the day they were officially nominated? For some reason, I remember reading about JFK kind of running things from his hotel room in 1960, but not actually setting foot on the convention hall until the last day. Or did I just invent a whole tradition that never existed?

If she moves to the center or center left, her supporters will turn on her and she will likely have drama with her pals Rashida Talib and Illihan Omar. The centrist Dems in Congress probably loathe AOC and just her tolerate her to keep the peace.

[quote]Omg...we still have Chris Coons and Dr. Jill before we get to Joe. I'm getting tired...
Believe it or not. James Taylor is scheduled to sing after Jill Biden's appearance.
Then Ashley Biden.
Then Joe.

On camera, Harris and Walz make a good pairing seated in the audience - they look presidential.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | August 20, 2024 3:01 AM |
I love Warnock.
by Anonymous | reply 541 | August 20, 2024 3:01 AM |
Will the anti-AOC troll shove it up his ass already? Very boring.
by Anonymous | reply 542 | August 20, 2024 3:01 AM |
James Taylor will probably sing Fire and Rain.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | August 20, 2024 3:01 AM |
Let's move it along toots. It's starting to look like 1972, when McGovern came on at like 2 in the morning or something.
by Anonymous | reply 544 | August 20, 2024 3:01 AM |
Mentioning Andy's Y-fronts has got me all hot and bothered.
by Anonymous | reply 545 | August 20, 2024 3:02 AM |
R537 Go check her primary results and get back to us. Her shift hasn’t hurt her one bit.
The nonsense that some of you post…
by Anonymous | reply 546 | August 20, 2024 3:02 AM |
Too many folks scheduled for tonight. Warnock's speech is too long, love him but c'mon.
by Anonymous | reply 547 | August 20, 2024 3:02 AM |
He’s singing “You’ve Got a Friend.”
by Anonymous | reply 548 | August 20, 2024 3:02 AM |
R545 is in heat!!
by Anonymous | reply 549 | August 20, 2024 3:02 AM |
Seriously, cut James Taylor and Chris Coons.
This is going too long.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | August 20, 2024 3:03 AM |
You're feeling your arse, r456.
This is 2020 redux, but with newer and more improved Electoral College votes.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | August 20, 2024 3:04 AM |
I really liked the 2020 convention. I wish they would use more high quality pre-recorded content instead of the parade of egos.
by Anonymous | reply 552 | August 20, 2024 3:04 AM |
r550, suck it up gramps, take your Geritol...this only happens once every 4 years.

The audience reaction shots have been weird tonight. A lot of unenthusiastic white guys in the crowd.

Kamala's tan suit is totally trolling the Republicans.

[quote]I see Kamala sitting there. And I think Trump was at his convention a few times.
It's refreshing to see Kamala and her husband sitting next to Walz and his wife. All four joyful and engaging.
Trump sat (miserably) next to JD Vance (sometimes his wife was there, sometimes not). Trump went stage - Melania did NOT show up at all, except the fourth night, during Trump's rambling speech. She showed up late, and looked angry. Last place she wanted to be was there - listening to Trump.

It’s only 10 pm in Chicago—Biden is still awake, hopefully.
I’m going to bed here in NYC.

R544, But McGovern was the nominee. Joe is not.
by Anonymous | reply 560 | August 20, 2024 3:06 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 566 | August 20, 2024 3:09 AM |
true, r560, but still, it's looking a little crowded and badly planned. maybe let some of the songs and speakers go later, after Joe, or maybe even tomorrow. Oh well, I'll try to stay up for it.

by Anonymous | reply 570 | August 20, 2024 3:11 AM |
Folks....this is planned to make sure Joe speaks as late as possible, so as few people as possible are watching.
That way, if he fucks up, the impact is muted.
by Anonymous | reply 571 | August 20, 2024 3:12 AM |

All this talk about Beshar's underwear. Since I've been with him intimately, I'll set the record straight - he freeballs. And what a pair of delicious low-hangers he has, framing his beautiful horsecock surrounded by a nice bush.
OK ? Now you have the visual. Let's move on.

That dress which Jill wore is the 'new style' which is in this year - you've seen it at all the Award shows this year. Sunny Hostin has worn it a few times this past season on 'The View' - I believe she wore it in white once and red another time.
It's hideous - looks like pleather.
by Anonymous | reply 606 | August 20, 2024 3:21 AM |

The camera's caught her looking less-than-enthusiastic a few times. Maybe she has resting bitch face; she needs to work on that now that she's going to be in the public eye more often.
by Anonymous | reply 608 | August 20, 2024 3:23 AM |
Is Ashley the one who wrote in her diary that she and her dad took showers together up until she was 8 ? (Not that I believe it - but that's the rumors being spread).
Anyhow, I like her - she's a great speaker. She has a future in politics like her dad. She's very attractive, but I wish she'd lose the long mane of hair over the left tit. I'm tired of every woman wearing their hair like that.

by Anonymous | reply 611 | August 20, 2024 3:26 AM |
r609 Yes, Ashley's the one who had her diary stolen from her and pages published online. She does mention being molested as a child, but she never said her father did it.
by Anonymous | reply 613 | August 20, 2024 3:30 AM |
When is Kamala going to explain her participation in hiding Bidens decline? Is that why she isn't doing any press conferences? Or does Kammy just not want to talk about children getting sex change operations?
by Anonymous | reply 614 | August 20, 2024 3:35 AM |
