Boris was the hottest guy in tennis back in the 1980s. Those legs were a work of art.

by Anonymous | reply 12 | June 12, 2024 12:08 AM |
That guy sure is hot. I was a kid in the mid 80s and didn’t grow up with tennis, so I missed out.
R11, I googled edberg tennis, pretty, but not even close to Boris hotness.

One aged well, the other didn’t and went to prison ^
by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 12, 2024 12:21 AM |
I found Boris and Connors Carrot Top/Howdy Doody grotesque then and now. Derrick Rostagno, Wilander, Ivanisevic, Pat Cash, Beuno Oresar, Yannick Noah and the Spanish Armada floated my boat back in the Becker era.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 12, 2024 12:46 AM |
Boris Becker had the sexiest, hairy legs in tennis. He was at his prime hotness during the 1985 and 1986 Wimbledons. I spent the entire 4th of July weekend both years watching him whenever he played.
Stefan Edberg was cute, but not hot. Pat Cash looked good from a distance and yes, he had spectacular legs, but up close he was Neanderthal looking.
Other hot tennis men: Arnaud Clement, James Blake before he went completely bald, and in view of these days of Rodent Men, I always found Andy Roddick super handsome, although somewhat rodent looking.

by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 13, 2024 1:29 PM |
I want the prettiness. I always thought Becker looked gross. Give me any of the Swedes, Guillermo Vilas, even Nastase. Plenty I can't think of... but keep beefy Hitler youth with the caveman face.

Shelton hasn't done much as of late. Will the rest of his career mirror his breakout 2023 season where he made a Slam QF and Slam SF but basically did nothing in between? He did win his first title after the USO last year and another in Houston this year - but also a lot of early round exits. He has big weapons, so if he puts it together on particular day, he can always be a threat. But, guys get to know his game, and as the commentators say, he has to "learn to play tennis" - pick up on what other guys are doing, make minor adjustments, etc. He's still young with a Top 15 ranking and two deep Slam runs - so he "has time" as they say. But "has time" can expire.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | June 13, 2024 4:54 PM |
Just watched Duckworth's on court interview. Gay voice and vibe for days!
Re. Shelton - I always rag on him because I can't stand his on court persona, but I obviously see his talent and the potential for his game. He seems to struggle with setbacks in matches - and I think this probably stems from the douchey 'college bro' mentality his dad seems to have encouraged. He's very young and clearly has a lot of time to mature and develop

I enjoyed the grand slam finals that were Becker v Edberg. That was some fine tennis.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | June 14, 2024 9:11 PM |
Becker managed to win 2 of the 3 finals he played against Becker. Plus he beat Becker in their only other Grand Slam match - the French Open SF in 1989.
So, Edberg was 3-1 in Slams vs. Becker even though he had a dismal 10-25 record against Boris overall. He also managed to beat Becker in the The Masters final (today's Year End Championship). So, he was good at getting wins when it really mattered most. Flip side, Becker absolutely railed Edberg a handful of times in Davis Cup - which was a very big deal back then, and obviously beat him in one Slam final.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | June 14, 2024 9:39 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 119 | June 16, 2024 6:08 PM |
Much as I love to knock Radu-Can't-Do and YELLton, I don't blame players who don't prioritise the Olympics.
It means a lot to some - prestige of the title of Olympic Champion and representing your country - but it's an unnecessary distraction form the slog of the tour and accumulating ranking points, especially for younger players. It's not the 'pinnacle' in tennis as it is for sports like swimming and track and field.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | June 16, 2024 6:21 PM |

But still, just the experience of the Olympics, even if he doesn't do great. Someone will be grateful that he declined the spot.

Both Canada and Cincy Masters are after the Olympics, though the last day of Olympic tennis is Aug 4 and Canada starts Aug 6 - but if the Olympic finalists are seeded in Canada, then they wouldn't start until later in the week. Most tennis players don't grow up dreaming of winning the Olympics or playing in the Olympics, they dream of winning a major. Even though it's been an Olympic Sport for 36 years it's never been considered a "must have" title for players. It makes sense that Emma would not interrupt her hardcourt season (her best surface) and U.S. Open prep (her sole major) to return to clay after the grasscourt season, having really not even played the entirety of the spring claycourt season.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | June 16, 2024 8:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 140 | June 16, 2024 8:46 PM |
It really depends on the player. Many consider representing their country and winning an Olympic medal a HUGE deal. Others don't. The Olympics matter because of the brand. Even though the Olympic tennis tournament is, on paper, slightly less than a Masters, the brand makes it instantly recognizable and gives it a level of prestige. Most people, if asked, if an Olympic gold is "better" than a Wimbledon, US Open, or other Slam, would probably choose the Olympics. Only hardcore tennis fans would choose the Slams. Tennis coattails on all the sports for which the Olympics actually IS the pinnacle of the sport. Why does it matter? Because it's starting to affect GOAT and ATG discussions. I always say "maybe as a tiebreaker" but I see more and more tennis fans see it as a primary consideration, and even a few more tennis journalists/commentators following suit. Of course winning an Olympic medal is a nice achievement in tennis, but I've never considered it THAT important - but I see more and more people disagree. I get it. It's tough to avoid it having weight given the brand.

I once proposed "Les Jambes" for Fils since he has spectacular legs too. But, it didn't catch on, and that's probably good since it wasn't that original at this point. Nevertheless, Les Jambes v. Legz+ tomorrow.

A little off topic but when did winning a major become synonymous with winning a grand slam? So many players and commentators refer to a one time major win as having won a grand slam. They haven’t won a grand slam (unless their name is Rod Laver) they’ve won a major, right?
by Anonymous | reply 187 | June 18, 2024 7:22 PM |

"Yes, [R187]. That bothers me, too. People, including most commentators (hi Chrissie!), now use 'slam' and 'major' as synonyms. "
Slam and major are synonyms. As R187 pointed out, "Grand Slam" and major are not, yet some people will say "grand slam" to refer to a single slam or major. But, as someone else pointed out, most people can figure out contextually that they're only referring to a single major when using "grand slam."
by Anonymous | reply 204 | June 18, 2024 10:26 PM |

Sorry, R345, the best I can do is drunken gay frat sex conveniently forgotten the next morning, UCLA locker room shenanigans, and Venice Beach surfer and skater adventures. I didn't play a lot of tennis until after college.

Paul was a really good junior and won majors. He was a typical spoiled American coming up but he has a very sound game. He's very technically sound on both sides of the ball and has great movement. He can easily make a major final if things lined up. He gives Zverev and Alcaraz all kinds of trouble head to head. He has a better all around game than Fritz who just wants to pound the ball.

The NYT -- more precisely, its "The Athletic" offshoot -- has a decent interview with Dimitrov about how he's managed to regain his form later in his career. It's paywalled, so I'll pull out a couple of things I found interesting below.
With regard to The Athletic, I'm currently able to log in with my NYT account, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets spun off completely. It has decent tennis coverage at a time when Sports Illustrated and ESPN and pulling back, and the overall approach is more old-school journalism than clickbait. Nice to have an alternative to Tennis.com/Tennis Channel since I hate giving that Sinclair fuckwad any money.
---------------
“A lot has changed,” he says. “There comes a point where I had to make some tough decisions on and off the court.
“Sometimes with my coaching team, sometimes there were things I had to focus on outside of tennis. It’s life. For me, part of growing as a human is you have basic experiences, which I didn’t really have, being a tennis player.
“I always wanted to make sure that I did have those things and maybe that’s why at times they were taking me away from the game. But I definitely don’t regret it.”
----------------
“To be the best in the sport you have to be obsessed, that’s how it is. To a point where you don’t have much margin for error. So when you look from that perspective, it’s pretty difficult.
“But I think I’m navigating myself better with things, and I also know that at the moment I’m way closer to the end than the beginning, and that also gives you a very different perspective.”
Because of Dimitrov’s geniality off the court — he’s a very popular locker-room presence — and his lack of killer instinct in some of his biggest matches, it’s been tempting to characterise him as someone lacking ruthlessness. He doesn’t feel that way.
“If I didn’t have it, I wouldn’t be here right now. And I think to have it something must have happened with you — like a bad experience that pushes you over the edge, that after you’re like, ‘OK, we’re on now.’
“I had that, of course. Both on and off the court. I had many of those experiences and I’m very grateful for them. Some of them have been extremely hard but it’s part of the game and part of life. I always link the game, our sport, to our life. I think they go hand-in-hand — it teaches you life as well.”
Part of that hand-in-hand relationship has led him to consider his views on what it means to be selfish and ruthless as a tennis player, whether in pursuit of wider goals or individual points, while still knowing how to behave. “Selfishness (for an athlete) goes without saying but it’s a fine line between it being a bad kind and a good kind,” he says. “I could have been more selfish with some decisions I had to make, but I’m contradicting myself a little bit because I always wanted to grow as a person, and now I’m kind of bitching on it.
[Okay, his English and desire to be diplomatic makes it a little tough to fully grok what he means, but my sense is that he stuck with certain people on his team longer than he should have, out of a sense of loyalty/wanting to be a nice guy.]
by Anonymous | reply 395 | June 25, 2024 10:38 AM |
Why would it be spun off? It is the only sports section the Times has, since they quite intentionally shut down their sports dept.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | June 25, 2024 10:48 AM |
The Athletic has a couple of dedicated tennis writers so lots of content.
by Anonymous | reply 397 | June 25, 2024 10:57 AM |
r396 The fact that it requires a separate login makes me think they want it to be its own revenue stream. But maybe they just want to be able to market it to folks who don't want a Times subscription? Time will tell, I suppose.
by Anonymous | reply 398 | June 25, 2024 11:29 AM |
It doesn’t require a separate login for NYT subscribers. It is the latter—it has been fully integrated into their digital newspaper as the “spiorts section.”

The Athletic now has a NYT URL so I don’t think they envision it being separate.
But it’s part of their All Access subscriptions, which includes other stuff like games, so costs more than a regular sub.

Some entertaining 5-setters on the first day, so far:
The UGOAT tops and tails his match against Shevchenko with 6-1 sets - with his usual round-the-houses wobbles in sets 2-4.
Lloyd Harris comes through a 5th set tie-break nail-biter against foetus-faced Michelsen
Pornstache Thompson does a Houdini act - coming back from 2 sets to love down to beat Kotov
Big Foe repeats the feat against Arnaldi.
Cute Altmaier breaks Brit hearts by beating equally cute, Arthur Fery in 5.
Cazaux and Zsa Zsa are currently in a 5th set. Cazaux took the first 2-sets easily, so Bergs with the momentum.

Early afternoon: Fils - Stricker on Court 7 Fearnley - Moro Cañas on Court 8
Late afternoon: Cobolli - Hijakata on Court 9
Early evening: Tabilo - Evans on Court 12 Giron - Searle on Court 15 FAA - Kokkinakis 0n Court 17

Korda never seems like he's that invested. He's managed to be ranked between 20 and 40 for a number of years, so obviously he's a good player. But, I don't think he has the grinding, burning passion he needs to really jump to the top echelon where he's contending for Slams. I'm always surprised that he's STILL ranked as high as he is. I never seem to remember his decent results, which must exist, if he's maintaining a 20s or 30s ranking.

Still, he's outta there.

ESPN has some woman doing color commentary during matches and I didn’t hear her introduced.
Sounds like a former player. Anyone know?

Oh, it’s Coco Vandeweghe.
I know she’s not well liked on here but I think she’s pretty good.

R466 here. Just got back from a loooooong ass day at SW19.. I was up at 4am to get in to the the queue by 6.30.
I had a great day and managed to see at least parts of most of the matches I listed as wanting to see - in spite of rain delays - and a record 6 hours in line to get in the bloody place!
I'm absolutely knackered now, but will give a full breakdown of who I saw tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 499 | July 2, 2024 11:00 PM |

I love the adjective, tho

R499 back. Rested and raring to go.
I got to the famous queue at 6.30 - number 6,130 in line. I spent the first 6 hours being shunted randomly round a field watching the Great Unwashed invent increasing random ways of passing the time. Every year, Wimbledon seems to have a new Queueing system, and every year it seems to take longer to get in the place!
By the time I got in it was the middle of the first rain delay - which worked out well for me, as I was able to get a good seat on Court 4 for the last set and a half of Tomas Martin Etcheverry - Luca Nardi. Not a great match in itself, Etcheverry was very dialled-in and dominated, with occasional out-of-this world service return passes from Nardi. Etcheverry is an absolute physical specimen close up. Has a very similar physique, and game on grass, to Feli Lopez - lots of serve volleying, interspersed with inch-perfect backhand slices.
Second match I saw - this one in its entirety was young Scot, Jacob Fearnley, who won the recent Challenger in Nottingham - against Alejandro Moro Cañas - who caught our collective eye earlier in the year when he won a Challenger in Italy. earlier this year. It was a straight sets win for Fearnley, but very competitive and entertaining. Reading up on Fearnley - he was contemporary of Sinner and Alcaraz in Juniors and has beaten both of them in the past - and you could well see that in the basic quality of his tennis. I think he has the potential to take a set of Novak in the next round. Moro Cañas is hotness itself. In spite of the cold weather, indulged us by changing his shirt several times during the match.
After that I managed to catch the last set of Arthur Fils Vs Dominic Stricker on Court 7. Fils looked very convincing - very focussed, few sloppy errors. His service return position is basically a full squat which accentuates his magnificent ass. Seriously if he passed in front of the sun, there would be a total eclipse. Good to see Stricker back from injury - he was playing well but ran out of steam at the end of the set.
By this time it was getting in for 7pm, so I decided to head out to Court 12 to catch the end of Angie Kerber and Putintseva, followed by the first set and a half of Alejandro Tabilio Vs 'Crackhead' Dan Evans. What it lacked in obvious eye-candy, it made up for in skill, with both Tabilo and Evans playing some great cat and mouse rallies. Tabilo's touch in the ball is silky smooth and he can conjure up drop shots and seemingly impossible passes from anywhere on the court. Evo was being his usual annoying self - moaning about the conditions from the third game and running constant commentary - often amusing, to be fair - throughout proceedings.
I did catch brief glimpses on my way around of the Musetti/ Lestienne and Legz+/Goffin matches. I can confirm to both their fanbases that their poster boy statuses are completely merited on an up-close inspection. Speaking of up-close inspection, Lestienne has a very big cock.
Before i left, I did watch the last half set of Big Jack D and Ymer, on the new big screen, ensconced in a deckchair with a double G&T, on the new terrace behind Court 12.
I got seated next to some fun people over the course of the day - a very handsome American flight attendant on a layover in London - who didn't know much about tennis but was really enjoying the experience; and an older American couple who seem to fly the world following the tour, and do little else The woman would thrive on here - taking pointless bitchery - mainly about Iga Swiatek - to new heights.
All in all, a great day. Probably my 20th Wimbledon. I used to go annually, before moving up to Scotland a decade ago. Now it's every few years if I'm down visiting family and friends.

Thanks for the great recap, r501/r502. I’m green with envy.
Shame you didn’t get to report on the Kokk, whose match you said you were planning to see. I would have liked a first-hand account of those legs and that bulge. Still, happy to note that Lestienne is a very gifted player :-)
by Anonymous | reply 504 | July 3, 2024 7:54 AM |
R504 sorry about that! I was planning to, but they moved the match from 12 onto to Court 2 - which it is a ticketed show court.

The bottom half of the women's draw is a bit rubbish without She Hulk. Too bad Peppa isn't in it as she would have a better shot at cunting her way to the title.

[quote] Yes, I just came here to post about Osaka's horrible outfit!! I bet she designed it herself
I think she just chucked together all the leftover wedding dresses from her village fete and thought it was great. It really is the most horrendous thing I’ve ever seen on a tennis court—and I’ve seen her very own tartan outfits lifted from a Scottish op-shop.
by Anonymous | reply 548 | July 3, 2024 8:06 PM |
Sad to see so many of my faves out so early: Felix, Navone, Mackie, ZZZ, Lajovic, Arnaldi, Mensik, Kei, Borges, Daniel, Djere, Eubanks, Hijikata, Cerundolo, Jubb,
I wonder if Felix has broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is down because of that. I haven't seen her in his player's box lately and his IG latest song is Billie Eilish's breakup song, Blue.
It's tough to get behind Kokkinakis with all of that obnoxious dudebro energy he's had going on with Kyrgios.

Shelton pings for me, don't know why. He sorta has a gay voice and slightly feminine mannerisms, despite his efforts to butch it up.
by Anonymous | reply 590 | July 5, 2024 1:15 AM |
Suspected gay player Hubie got injured, too bad. I think he would have probably lost to Fils even if he didn't get injured though, as he was in trouble long before that.

Agree with R590 that something seems gay about Ben Shelton. His parents would probably burn a gay kid at the stake.
