Joan and Franchot. He helped her get cultured. Sadly, she couldn't carry a child to term with him even though she got pregnant. She was at the height of her career but just couldn't have it all. So, she adopted Christina the year of that divorce, and the rest, as they say, is history. She took care of Tone when he was down and out, more than a decade after his trials and tribulations with Barbara Payton were over. He was never the same after that beating he took.

I would also add Lucy and Desi. Sure they had some great years and children and maintained a friendship but when you see how in love with each other they were on ILL and then you see Desi threw it all away because he could never keep it in his pants and it really is truly tragic. Bill Bixby and Brenda Benet.
They were married for nine years and had a son together. A year after their divorce, their son died tragically. Feeling guilty over her son's death, she fell into a deep depression, and despite the fact that he was no longer her husband, Bixby continued to support Benet emotionally and financially.
Benet ended up in a lesbian relationship with talk show host Tammy Bruce, which Bixby was supportive of. When that relationship ended, Benet became despondent and shot herself in the house she shared with Bruce in front of Bruce. Bixby was one of the first people Bruce contacted after Benet's suicide.

Very minor celebs in comparison to the others on this thread, but this one was the first that came to my mind. Mark Speight was a very popular Children's BBC presenter who was engaged to his former "See It, Saw It" co-star Natasha Collins. They did cocaine together and he found her dead in the bath the next morning. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, which obviously attracted a lot of media coverage. The coroner eventually ruled that her cause of death was misadventure (she had scalded herself in the bath while high on coke - i.e. doing a Whitney even before Whitney did), and Mark was not charged. A few days after the ruling, he was reported missing. A week later, his body was found hanging near Paddington Station; there was a note in his pocket saying he no longer wanted to live without Natasha.
Having grown up watching Mark Speight, his death seems in hindsight almost like a dress rehearsal for Robin Williams's, despite the vast disaparity in their fame. They both had high-energy, manic personas, and so many people have happy childhood memories of watching them, yet their deaths were so bleak and desperate.

That’s not quite true. Lilli was already having an affair with Carlos Thompson. The minute the divorce was finalized, she married Thompson and remained married to him until she died.
Maybe Rex told that story to save face but she was not interested in getting back with him.

Robert Montgomery despised his son-in-law Gig Young, whom he felt was "almost as old and not one quarter as successful as I am." Needless to say, he didn't attend his daughter's wedding.
The sad story here is Gig's fifth wife, Kim Schmidt, whom Gig met on the set of "Game of Death." Only three weeks into their marriage, Gig shot her in the back of the head before turning the gun on himself. She was only 31.

Richard Burton also slapped Liz around. I think it was Debbie Reynolds who said that she (and Eddie Fisher?) went to Liz's house for dinner. Liz and Dick argued, then disappeared and it was apparent that Dick was slapping her around. Debbie was appalled and aghast. Meanwhile, Liz took it in stride as part of the marriage.

From 1962 to her death on November 28, 1963, Prine dated actress Karyn Kupcinet.
The relationship was problematic; Kupcinet was abusing diet pills along with other prescription drugs.[5]
The problems in Kupcinet's relationship with Prine were mainly due to Prine's objections to making the relationship exclusive. After Kupcinet underwent an illegal abortion in July 1963, the relationship cooled, and Prine began dating other women. In turn, Kupcinet began spying on Prine and his new girlfriend.[6]
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department later determined Kupcinet had delivered threatening and profane messages, consisting of words and letters she had cut out of magazines, to Prine and herself.
On November 30, 1963, Karyn Kupcinet was found dead in her apartment at the age of 22. Coroner Harold Kade concluded that due to a broken hyoid bone in her throat, Kupcinet had been strangled. Her death officially was ruled a homicide.[7]
During the course of its investigation, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department named Andrew Prine as one of its chief suspects. When questioned by law enforcement, Prine said he had talked with Kupcinet twice by phone on Wednesday, the day before her murder, claiming he was trying to resolve a lover's quarrel between them. Detectives considered it possible that, after Prine learned the anonymous threat letters both he and Kupcinet had received had been created by Kupcinet and their unresolved argument, he had a motive for murder. In addition, both Edward Rubin and Robert Hathaway, the two men who had possibly been the last to see her alive, were friends of Prine. They eventually were named as suspects.[8][9][6]
In 1988, Kupcinet's father Irv Kupcinet published a memoir in which he revealed that he and his wife Essee believed that Andrew Prine had nothing to do with their daughter's murder.[10] He was suspicious of a person, still alive when he wrote his memoir, who had no connection to Prine.[10] Irv Kupcinet named David Lange, a neighbor of his daughter, who had twice confessed to friends he was guilty. Later when questioned, Lange suggested he was kidding. However, when a girlfriend who was with Lange in his upper apartment told him about the police activity at his friend Karen's apartment, his reaction was adamant and he told her to close the drapes and keep quiet. She thought his demeanor was strange because Lange often had been in Karyn's apartment.[citation needed]
