Nostalgic Recipe for the Eldergays - Chicken a La King

Recently my husband was pining for Chicken a La King served over Pepperidge Farm pastry shells, (a.k.a. vol-au-vent). I was sure PF didn't make those anymore, and I wasn't going to make them myself. But it turns out they do. So I bought a package and made basic a Chicken a La King recipe (just google) and it was a huge hit. I'm making it again this week.

Just a thought.

I've never tasted Chicken à la King but it looks delicious.

by Anonymousreply 1April 8, 2024 8:15 AM

It's one of my favorites from Stouffer's. I used to have it in Banquet boil-in-bags when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 2April 8, 2024 8:16 AM

School lunch, Thursdays. I liked it.

by Anonymousreply 3April 8, 2024 8:16 AM

Mmm, my mom made it all the time

There was a comedian popular when I was a kid, Alan King, I thought this was named after him

by Anonymousreply 4April 8, 2024 8:20 AM

You know Swanson makes canned chicken a la king, right? Amazon it.

by Anonymousreply 5April 8, 2024 8:27 AM

^ Yeah, it's made in Russia by people who care 🙄

by Anonymousreply 6April 8, 2024 8:37 AM

no recipes!

Meat Loaf

Which is called Hackbraten and can be purchased at the butchers freshly made and ready to pop in the oven. It's always better than my own.

See also - pot pies, made by the traiteur and always better than my own.

by Anonymousreply 7April 8, 2024 8:47 AM

Never had the stuff and it's probably good but the photo makes it look like somebody vomited lunch.

by Anonymousreply 8April 8, 2024 9:47 AM

Prefer it over white rice.

by Anonymousreply 9April 8, 2024 11:41 AM

Chicken lacking flavor.

by Anonymousreply 10April 8, 2024 11:43 AM

We had this at the school cafeteria

by Anonymousreply 11April 8, 2024 11:54 AM

I think we used to call it shit on a shingle. Is that the same thing? Put over a slice of toast?

by Anonymousreply 12April 8, 2024 12:25 PM

^ I think that's chipped beef

by Anonymousreply 13April 8, 2024 12:27 PM

Yep, you're right. Thanks R13.

by Anonymousreply 14April 8, 2024 12:29 PM

R10, made properly, it's pretty good. It's basically chicken pot pie without the pie.

by Anonymousreply 15April 8, 2024 1:20 PM

It looks like cat puke.

by Anonymousreply 16April 8, 2024 1:22 PM

Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 17April 8, 2024 1:41 PM

Kinda looks like chicken pot pie.

by Anonymousreply 18April 8, 2024 1:49 PM

Okay, fine. In the absence of the Thread Labeler, I’ll do it.

I was served Chicken ala King by an heiress in Palm Beach.

An actual heiress!

by Anonymousreply 20April 8, 2024 2:04 PM

How soon we forget.

by Anonymousreply 22April 8, 2024 2:59 PM

R21 An absolute masterpiece!

by Anonymousreply 23April 8, 2024 8:52 PM

Nice! Mom made it for my dad and I growing up.

by Anonymousreply 24April 8, 2024 10:04 PM

Vomit on toast.

by Anonymousreply 25April 8, 2024 10:46 PM

As kids we called it “bum barf”

by Anonymousreply 26April 8, 2024 11:01 PM

R2 I forgot about those things! I used to make them all the time.

I love chicken a la king :)

by Anonymousreply 27April 8, 2024 11:02 PM

Chicken A La King was only good out of a Banquet bag you boil.

by Anonymousreply 28April 8, 2024 11:11 PM

Cleanup in aisle 9.

by Anonymousreply 29April 8, 2024 11:25 PM

I used to have it as a kid, served over mashed potatoes.

by Anonymousreply 30April 8, 2024 11:39 PM

My mother always used pastry shells when she was out of ideas, turkey curry, seafood newburg, etc., probably the reason I like anything in those things to this day.

by Anonymousreply 31April 9, 2024 12:28 AM

I like the idea of chicken á la king, but it usually has pimientos, which I detest.

by Anonymousreply 32April 9, 2024 3:41 AM

^ I don't like them either, so you use some chopped red pepper instead

by Anonymousreply 33April 9, 2024 3:48 AM

Funny. Last night I was thinking of making a pot pie by getting a Costco rotisserie chicken, making a cream gravy with the drippings. Adding some frozen peas and carrots that is sold out there. They come diced. Cut up the chicken into small cubes or chunks, mix that in, pour the whole thing into a Marie Calendar pie shell with a pastry top and baking it. Was surprised to see this here.

by Anonymousreply 34April 9, 2024 4:11 AM

^ Mmm, pot pies are so good especially if it's cold out

by Anonymousreply 35April 9, 2024 4:28 AM

R32 I love pimentos but I challenge you to find them. Because I am a lazy whore I do all my grocery shopping through Instacart. I add a little jar of pimentos every single time, and Instacart shows "plenty in stock" but they are perpetually out of stock.

by Anonymousreply 36April 9, 2024 5:19 AM

[quote]^ Yeah, it's made in Russia by people who care

I’m, I think not.

by Anonymousreply 37April 9, 2024 5:25 AM

I typed Um, my phone changed it to I’m, so I changed it back to Um.

Then, as I hit post, my phone changed it back to I’m AGAIN.

Stouffer's used to make a frozen Lobster Newburg (boil in a bag) which we ate over those pastry shells. Very rich and surprisingly delicious for a frozen dinner.

by Anonymousreply 39April 9, 2024 5:59 AM

R39 Stouffer's used to make a Noodles Romanoff that I would commit crimes to eat again. There are copycat recipes online, but none of them come close to the original. It was a fucking masterpiece. Every Stouffer's social media account is continually bombarded with requests to just make this fucking great thing again, but for reasons we will never know, they refuse.

by Anonymousreply 40April 9, 2024 6:04 AM

^ Stouffer's used to make a frozen Welsh Rarebit that was out of this world. I would have it at least a couple of times a month, but like everything Stouffer's used to make that was good it was discontinued ☹️

I had just discovered Stouffer’s Welsh Rarebit and had it over toast only twice when they discontinued it. I wish they’d bring that back, it really was good.

Wish I. Had tried the lobster Newburg..

by Anonymousreply 42April 9, 2024 8:54 PM

Eldergays should NOT be eating this!

by Anonymousreply 43April 9, 2024 9:21 PM

[quote]Instacart shows "plenty in stock" but they are perpetually out of stock.

That's because your shopper is timed and ain't nobody got time to go hunting for that. Thus, out of stock!

by Anonymousreply 44April 9, 2024 9:29 PM

The chicken a la king at OP should have more sauce, plus the mushroom looks raw (despite being coated in sauce), but it does look good.

It's just white sauce (flour, butter, milk) with chicken and whatever vegetables you want to put in it.

My school cafeteria made turkey a la king.

Vintage (1933) recipe for you.
