Procter & Gamble? Did hell freeze over?

by Anonymousreply 1March 6, 2024 8:23 PM

R1 They still got plenty products on the shelves. It just sounds old school. I would bet older black women are the only demographic still watching daytime network tv that’s why.

by Anonymousreply 2March 6, 2024 8:33 PM

Y&R has a large black audience. If they put this show on immediately after Y&R, the audience might stick around and watch it.

by Anonymousreply 3March 6, 2024 8:35 PM

Well, the bar’s been set pretty high:

Didn't Tyler Perry have a soap running for a time? It was about successful southern families, one black, the other white. The fathers were old friends, their families were a trainwreck. The writing, acting, storylines and directing was uniformly awful, but there was some eye candy and the black mother was totally whack (she couldn't handle that her son was gay, gay, gay).

What was the name of that show? Ultra-crazy John Schneider was in the cast...

by Anonymousreply 10March 6, 2024 8:50 PM

r10 yes

by Anonymousreply 11March 6, 2024 8:52 PM

This will bomb. Unless it is budgeted like a garage sale. The only thing I can see working is if they sell it overseas? (Like B&B?)

I give it 2 years, tops.

by Anonymousreply 12March 6, 2024 8:56 PM

The Haves and Have Nots rad for 8 years? Eight effing years? How is that possible? It was terrible! Who watched that crap?!

by Anonymousreply 16March 6, 2024 9:22 PM

R5 That’s was a nighttime soap not a traditional daily serial. Your talking about The Have and Have Nots which I think is still on Oprah’s O network.

by Anonymousreply 17March 6, 2024 11:01 PM

"The Gates" should air following B&B, cut "The Talk" to a half-hour.

by Anonymousreply 18March 6, 2024 11:34 PM

If "The Gates" live on one side of the tracks and rest of the town on the other, they'll hire more actors. IIRC, a soap had middle-class family and others who lived in Milltown.

by Anonymousreply 19March 6, 2024 11:39 PM

"The Bold and the Boojeifull?"

"The Hung and the Reckless"?

"Love Is a Many Splendored Thang"?

"General Ho-Spittle"?

Anyways, it would be a nice gesture but soap operas are a dying art. Days of Our Lives is on its last legs and if any soap gets cancelled again DoOL would be the next to fall. The remaining three could hold out for another 15-20 years max.

They keep talking about about rebooting All My Children and One Life to Live but I doubt it'll happen. Too much time has passed and way too many former cast members have died.

It will have to be a 30 minutes show at best. Budget minimal - which makes the affluent aspect of the show a head scratcher.

And it will be something that a streamer will repeat after initial broacast.

by Anonymousreply 62March 7, 2024 12:04 PM

Hopefully we can tamp down the drama a bit. I was the one who made the statement about projects with a majority black cast not selling well in foreign markets. It's based on things I've read over the years. Recently, weren't they airbrushing black actors off of certain movie posters when they head to Asia and other foreign markets?

I don't have any actual data to back it up, if I'm wrong I'm wrong - it could be just legend and myth. I hope I am wrong. But I know that I've read that Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach and B&B play on an endless loop in foreign markets because they are set in a California with mostly blonde white people, while you don't see Generations anywhere.

by Anonymousreply 63March 7, 2024 1:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 72March 7, 2024 6:40 PM

See, this is the hypocrisy many of us are having with the Left lately.

All-black cast = great and empowering

All-white cast = the devil incarnate

I can't wait until the Marxist 'woke' progressives are overthrown in Hollywood -- like when conservatives took control of Hollywood nearly a century ago via the Hays Code and gave us the Golden Age (1930s-1960s).

by Anonymousreply 73March 7, 2024 6:45 PM

I don't think anyone said it was an all black cast. Just that the focus would be on a wealthy black family.

by Anonymousreply 74March 7, 2024 6:51 PM

R39, I'm with you... I think there are ways to bring back The Edge of Night as a soap, as a drama, as a 30-minute program.

There was a thread - I did a search for it using "Edge of Night" - that yielded nothing, naturally... it had some interesting ideas about a re-launch of the program by some of us DL denizens.

by Anonymousreply 83March 8, 2024 5:38 PM

R4 Is that the only clip of Generations that exists? It's always the one people put up when mentioning the soap.

by Anonymousreply 84March 9, 2024 1:35 AM

R16 Think of it this way. In total, The Have and Have Nots, ran for 196 episodes. In daytime soapland - which has shows churning out 250 episodes per year - that would equal about nine months.

by Anonymousreply 85March 9, 2024 1:46 AM

What about Passions? They seem to have had a significant amount of non white cast members

by Anonymousreply 86March 9, 2024 1:53 AM

I thought P&G wanted the hell out of the soap business. They threw Guiding Light and As the World Turns in the trash can a decade ago. Why would it be interested in revisiting the genre. Soaps definitely haven't become more popular since the company fled the segment.

The remaining soaps are pitiful --- very few and cheap looking sets, lousy writing, and a merry-go-round of hired/fired actors. All of it likely is due to dwindling production budgets and corporate micro-management. The sad situation clearly shows in the falling ratings for all of them. Why in the world would anyone think it is a good idea to bring another one on the air? If there is an interest in daytime serials, the effort should be made to improve the established ones on the air.

by Anonymousreply 87March 9, 2024 3:50 AM

Which they will never do because of budgets.

When the 2007/08 writers strike happened, I was a fledgling in the biz and I had a contact at Guiding Light who said they were looking for scab writers. I wasn't working at the time, and really needed the money, but I was not sure it was a line I wanted to cross. I hadn't seen the show since I was a teenager (even though my friend had been on it at this point for several years), so I watched it every day for a few weeks.

I was appalled at how cheap it was. Even worse, because they had no budget, the writing consisted of a conversation between two people that may have advanced a story, but then for the next three days, either the same two people or two other people would basically recap that conversation in as many ways as possible, mostly so they could just kill time by shooting two people in a room. The show moved at a glacial pace and was unbearably dull.

Ultimately, I decided I did not want to cross that line and I declined to go in and talk with the producers.

Several years later, I had gotten very sick and my mom came to stay with me for a month. I gave her full reign of the television because she was such a help. And she was a General Hospital fan. Same fucking thing. A tiny plot point would be discussed and re-discussed for days on end. I told her- You know, you really only need to watch this show one day a week and I bet you wouldn't miss anything.

by Anonymousreply 88March 9, 2024 3:58 AM

The Gates' showrunner, Michele Val Jean, has tweeted: “The train is in the station, people are boarding and taking seats!"

by Anonymousreply 89July 5, 2024 9:31 PM

The Gates???

What an ill fitting name, for a variety of reasons…

by Anonymousreply 90July 5, 2024 9:43 PM

R90 why might that be. You do realize they didn’t have gates on US southern plantations.

by Anonymousreply 91July 5, 2024 9:52 PM

It’ll get canceled after 3 episodes. Besides Madea and her family, nobody’s watching this shit.

by Anonymousreply 92July 5, 2024 9:54 PM

Any castings yet?

by Anonymousreply 93July 5, 2024 10:05 PM

Someone said above that Y&R has a huge black audience. Makes sense, all the women on both my AA and Latino side watched Y&R when I was growing up.

I think there will be an audience for this especially if it’s well written and acted. Will probably catch on with the black female college crowd. I’m actually trying to land an audition for a role.

by Anonymousreply 94July 5, 2024 10:06 PM

R91, did I not write, ‘a variety of reasons’? I did, indeed!

by Anonymousreply 95July 5, 2024 10:09 PM

R95 so what are they besides the religious allegory?

by Anonymousreply 96July 5, 2024 10:11 PM

R96, unless the Gates refer to a family, there are other references to gates, which typically reference either inclusion, or exclusion, whether we are referencing a gated community, or prison gates.

I think it’s an odd title for an African American, centric soap opera, unless we’re discussing a soap opera where the main characters are surnamed Gates.

by Anonymousreply 97July 5, 2024 10:22 PM

R97 so it would be a for an African-America family to live in a gated community? I swear some of you libs think deeper than us black folk. It’s a well to do family with the last name gates also living in a gated community. It’s that simple lol.

by Anonymousreply 102July 5, 2024 10:34 PM

[quote] It’ll get canceled after 3 episodes

I don't think it will get cancelled ... immediately. .. But I do think that it might start out on broadcast (as well as CBS Daytime's standard, last five-episodes available for free streaming deal), but then eventually get moved to Paramount+ for streaming-only. .. If Days can make it on Peacock with something under a million unique viewers, then something like this probably could as well. .. It's all about adding eyeballs to the streaming platforms now, and soaps are good at being "gateway" shows, since they typically bring fans to a platform several times per week -- the hope being that these viewers stick around and click on other content to watch while they're there.

by Anonymousreply 103July 5, 2024 10:58 PM

That's presuming Paramount+ survives, R103. I don't think that's at all certain.

by Anonymousreply 104July 5, 2024 11:00 PM

Soaps are expensive programming.

That said, the remaining soaps are all so tired, led by characters played out decades ago, played by actors vaguely sleepwalking.

If you can establish a couple popular characters or actors, people might get on board.

by Anonymousreply 105July 5, 2024 11:03 PM

R104 Whether it's Paramount+ or something else, shows on CBS will stream somewhere. In fact, a recent article in Venture suggested content could be merged with Peacock.

by Anonymousreply 106July 5, 2024 11:15 PM

“The train is in the station, people are boarding and taking seats!"

I know where I'm not sittin'

by Anonymousreply 107July 5, 2024 11:32 PM

Do we even know the studio and/or location they're going to use to shoot this soap? The (four) existing ones all use studios in L.A. The showrunner of The Gates still resides in L.A.

by Anonymousreply 108July 6, 2024 12:14 AM

If the show is off to a slow start and ratings are falling, all they have to do is bring in Joan Collins. She'll save this show like she did "Dynasty" 42 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 109July 6, 2024 12:15 AM

The involvement of Michele val Jean is a positive.

If this was just going to be hair tossing and bitch slaps as written by Jamey Giddens it would just be fourth rate Tyler Perry/another Dynasty ripoff and it would not last long. but the fact that MVJ is involved leads one to be optimistic.

by Anonymousreply 110July 6, 2024 12:17 AM

For the genre I hope it makes it-

Especially for crew members, ect-

I needs some hot mens in their 20s.

by Anonymousreply 137August 2, 2024 7:28 PM

A new soap opera in 2025? Please. Soaps are barely surviving. No one wants a new soap.

by Anonymousreply 138August 3, 2024 12:12 PM

I'm sorry but I can't read. Did they say if this is going to be a "daytime" show or on Paramount+ like DOOL is on Peacock?

by Anonymousreply 139August 3, 2024 11:50 PM

The Gates is schedules to air on CBS, likely immediately after Bold & Beautiful in the time slot currently occupied by The Talk.

Paramount+ will likely also carry it. Paramount+ also airs Y&R and B&B.

by Anonymousreply 140August 4, 2024 12:14 AM

Okay. I can see a first year Emmy nom for Best Drama (everyone gets those) and maybe Writing out of the big seven.

by Anonymousreply 141August 4, 2024 12:18 AM

R140, they haven't announced the timeslot for the Gates yet.

My guess is they will 'cradle' it in between Y&R and B&B.

When B&B took over for Capitol, CBS changed the lineup. it used to go Y&R, ATWT, Capitol, GL; then it became Y&R, B&B, ATWT, GL -- at the height of Doug Marland's fantastic run in Oakdale.

I think CBS will do the same and this could be bad news for B&B IF The Gates isn't solid. But I say give MVJ a shot. let's see what she does.

by Anonymousreply 142August 5, 2024 3:42 AM

Soaps are expensive to produce. Waste of time and money.

by Anonymousreply 143August 5, 2024 4:03 AM

I give this soap a year, tops. It will fail.

by Anonymousreply 144August 5, 2024 4:14 AM

[quote] My guess is they will 'cradle' it in between Y&R and B&B.

The CBS Daytime schedule isn't the same in every city.

Often you'll find a half-hour of local news in between Y&R and B&B (e.g. San Francisco, Denver, Sacramento). In other cities the shows have a totally different order. In Honolulu, the schedule runs TPIR, Hot Bench, B&B, LMAD, Y&R, then The Talk. In Seattle, the schedule runs LMAD, TPIR, Y&R, and hour of local news, then The Talk, and finally B&B.

by Anonymousreply 145August 5, 2024 7:06 AM

Ridiculous concept. Michele Val Jean is a cancer.

Bring back THE Guiding Light

[quote] Soaps are expensive to produce. Waste of time and money.

Obviously, the metrics for what makes a daily soap opera financially-feasible have changed with streaming .

Otherwise, Peacock wouldn't have decided to pick up and stream Days of our Lives and make it one of its "Originals" (via subscription) nor would U.S.-based Amazon Freevee have opted to resurrect "Neighbours" from the Aussie dustbin (and now stream it free with ads in the U.S. and U.K.). That move by Amazon was like adding a new daily soap opera in America.

by Anonymousreply 148August 6, 2024 1:23 AM

Wasn’t Benson the first?

by Anonymousreply 149August 6, 2024 2:33 AM

Has Miss Jamey Giddens been announced as co-head yet???

by Anonymousreply 150August 6, 2024 4:45 AM

Rumor has it they are going to poach Mel Thomas Scott from Y&R for name recognition and have her play a ‘Victoria Rowell type’ complete with afro wig.

by Anonymousreply 151August 6, 2024 10:39 AM

SPIT TAKE!

by Anonymousreply 152August 6, 2024 3:35 PM

R150. But only if he can fit into the writers' room.

by Anonymousreply 153August 6, 2024 9:57 PM

I would prefer it to NOT be a camp mess.

by Anonymousreply 154August 6, 2024 10:39 PM

R154 if Jamey Giddens is involved, I'm afraid all hope is lost.

by Anonymousreply 155August 9, 2024 9:32 PM

That FAT slob Giddens better not be involved in The Gates.

by Anonymousreply 156August 9, 2024 11:17 PM

OI!

by Anonymousreply 157August 10, 2024 12:34 AM

Do we anticipate that there will be anything gay in this soap? .. I only have time to add new serial drama to my limited viewing hours if the soap contains at least a measure of content that actually interests (speaks to) me. That's why I started watching Neighbours after Amazon began producing/streaming the soap in the U.S. The Aaron-Logan storyline is quite different as gay stories go, and I've found it very intriguing.

Maybe the gates weren't wide enough and he got stuck. Grease his thighs and dangle a cheeseburger in his face to coax him through.

by Anonymousreply 159August 10, 2024 1:01 AM

R159. But don't you want his long winded, unfunny, uninteresting, and unintelligent options on how soaps SHOULD be made? It's a shame Luke Kerr slept with him and made him a podcast "personality."

by Anonymousreply 160August 10, 2024 5:41 AM

Didn’t Porker Giddens go on and on about his hemmorhoids in a podcast?

by Anonymousreply 161August 10, 2024 7:56 AM

Team Jamey!

by Anonymousreply 162August 10, 2024 8:49 AM

Jamey used to be laughed at here; folks would say he'd always be a blogger. Then, he got his break and has written for multiple shows.

by Anonymousreply 163August 10, 2024 8:52 AM

Yeah but Jamey’s own show bombed bigtime. Working for Corday, who he used to villify, must frost his fat carcass.

by Anonymousreply 164August 10, 2024 12:23 PM

Sincere props to Jamey for achieving what he has.

But I still say I've sat through enough Wishful Castings and story imaginings during his DC days to know that his tastes and ideas are unimaginative Dynasty retreads. We need something else in daytime beyond Oh No You Di'int and slaps and catfights.

by Anonymousreply 165August 10, 2024 2:12 PM

Fat jokes aside, I have no issue with LaGiddens pursuing his dream and making it a reality, but the fact remains, when he'd go off on one of his tangents on what he'd do at some soap or another, only about 1 in 10 ideas impressed me. I found "Ambitions" unwatchable; as did a lot of viewers. I was out by the fourth episode. If you look at the ratings, I wasn't alone. The numbers just kept dropping weekly. The demo was halved. Even when they got to the finale, viewers who may have still been mildly interested didn't return.

R166 Yes, exactly to all of that.

by Anonymousreply 167August 10, 2024 8:28 PM

Who the hell cares???

by Anonymousreply 168August 10, 2024 8:29 PM

R168 You do realize you're at DataLounge, right? .. the home of POINTLESS BITCHERY.

by Anonymousreply 169August 10, 2024 8:45 PM

R168 is the stanky bitch who has to come to any and every soap thread and complain loudly how much she hates soaps.

by Anonymousreply 170August 10, 2024 8:47 PM

I don’t hate soaps but for God’s sake find something more interesting to talk about on here. Like post another trump or jd Vance thread to make me wanna stab my eyes out with a dull pencil

by Anonymousreply 171August 10, 2024 9:36 PM

R171. What about a Viv Vance post?

by Anonymousreply 172August 10, 2024 9:46 PM

R171 Oh, pussycat. Darling!

by Anonymousreply 173August 10, 2024 10:18 PM

They need to cast that hot daddy Dutch Johnson!

by Anonymousreply 174August 15, 2024 12:36 AM

They haven't promoted this much yet.....would think they'd want to get some generic ads on the air to raise awareness.....

by Anonymousreply 175August 19, 2024 9:58 PM

Show isn't debuting until January.

It's August now and CBS is more focused on promoting its fall primetime lineup which debuts in September

I imagine in late October or early November, they'll start promoting the show.

by Anonymousreply 176August 19, 2024 10:11 PM

Sheryl Underwood is cast as the maid, Sookie.

by Anonymousreply 177August 19, 2024 10:23 PM

Aw Sookie Sookie!

by Anonymousreply 178August 19, 2024 11:06 PM

Sheryl's gums would eat this show before it even got started.

by Anonymousreply 179August 19, 2024 11:25 PM

Sheryl will fit right in as the vixen who can get any man she wants. Who wouldn’t want Sheryl???

by Anonymousreply 180August 19, 2024 11:37 PM

Come get me, BITCH!

by Anonymousreply 181August 19, 2024 11:57 PM

R180. A gynecologist.

by Anonymousreply 182August 20, 2024 4:29 AM

There are 40 million black people in the USA-- that is bigger than some countries or about the same population. That is enough to sustain a TV show. Not everything has to do well in foreign markets.

by Anonymousreply 183October 6, 2024 4:51 PM

Apparently, a soap can now survive even if it's able to attract something less than a million unique IPs streaming it ... only on the 'Cock!

by Anonymousreply 184October 6, 2024 7:52 PM

Who’s to say it will only attract a black audience?

People who like soaps have been stuck choosing from a bunch of tired shows.

I suspect people will be intrigued to try it out. If they can establish a couple of strong characters right off, they could get traction.

Honestly, none of these shows are built for decades-long runs.

by Anonymousreply 185October 6, 2024 9:41 PM

r184 Young and the restless only gets 3 million views on traditional TV. Not sure how much it gets on streaming, but if only black people watch (and there will always be some non-blacks) it can still muster 2 or 3 million.

by Anonymousreply 186October 7, 2024 12:20 AM

Has Victoria Rowell been hired yet?

by Anonymousreply 187October 7, 2024 4:36 AM

R187 Is there a 65-year old grandma in it who wears a bad Lee Grant wig and a hat?
