R1 They still got plenty products on the shelves. It just sounds old school. I would bet older black women are the only demographic still watching daytime network tv that’s why.

Y&R has a large black audience. If they put this show on immediately after Y&R, the audience might stick around and watch it.

Didn't Tyler Perry have a soap running for a time? It was about successful southern families, one black, the other white. The fathers were old friends, their families were a trainwreck. The writing, acting, storylines and directing was uniformly awful, but there was some eye candy and the black mother was totally whack (she couldn't handle that her son was gay, gay, gay).
What was the name of that show? Ultra-crazy John Schneider was in the cast...

Hopefully we can tamp down the drama a bit. I was the one who made the statement about projects with a majority black cast not selling well in foreign markets. It's based on things I've read over the years. Recently, weren't they airbrushing black actors off of certain movie posters when they head to Asia and other foreign markets?
I don't have any actual data to back it up, if I'm wrong I'm wrong - it could be just legend and myth. I hope I am wrong. But I know that I've read that Santa Barbara, Sunset Beach and B&B play on an endless loop in foreign markets because they are set in a California with mostly blonde white people, while you don't see Generations anywhere.

by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 9, 2024 1:35 AM |
R16 Think of it this way. In total, The Have and Have Nots, ran for 196 episodes. In daytime soapland - which has shows churning out 250 episodes per year - that would equal about nine months.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | March 9, 2024 1:46 AM |
What about Passions? They seem to have had a significant amount of non white cast members
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 9, 2024 1:53 AM |
I thought P&G wanted the hell out of the soap business. They threw Guiding Light and As the World Turns in the trash can a decade ago. Why would it be interested in revisiting the genre. Soaps definitely haven't become more popular since the company fled the segment.
The remaining soaps are pitiful --- very few and cheap looking sets, lousy writing, and a merry-go-round of hired/fired actors. All of it likely is due to dwindling production budgets and corporate micro-management. The sad situation clearly shows in the falling ratings for all of them. Why in the world would anyone think it is a good idea to bring another one on the air? If there is an interest in daytime serials, the effort should be made to improve the established ones on the air.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 9, 2024 3:50 AM |
Which they will never do because of budgets.
When the 2007/08 writers strike happened, I was a fledgling in the biz and I had a contact at Guiding Light who said they were looking for scab writers. I wasn't working at the time, and really needed the money, but I was not sure it was a line I wanted to cross. I hadn't seen the show since I was a teenager (even though my friend had been on it at this point for several years), so I watched it every day for a few weeks.
I was appalled at how cheap it was. Even worse, because they had no budget, the writing consisted of a conversation between two people that may have advanced a story, but then for the next three days, either the same two people or two other people would basically recap that conversation in as many ways as possible, mostly so they could just kill time by shooting two people in a room. The show moved at a glacial pace and was unbearably dull.
Ultimately, I decided I did not want to cross that line and I declined to go in and talk with the producers.
Several years later, I had gotten very sick and my mom came to stay with me for a month. I gave her full reign of the television because she was such a help. And she was a General Hospital fan. Same fucking thing. A tiny plot point would be discussed and re-discussed for days on end. I told her- You know, you really only need to watch this show one day a week and I bet you wouldn't miss anything.

by Anonymous | reply 96 | July 5, 2024 10:11 PM |
R96, unless the Gates refer to a family, there are other references to gates, which typically reference either inclusion, or exclusion, whether we are referencing a gated community, or prison gates.
I think it’s an odd title for an African American, centric soap opera, unless we’re discussing a soap opera where the main characters are surnamed Gates.
by Anonymous | reply 97 | July 5, 2024 10:22 PM |

[quote] It’ll get canceled after 3 episodes
I don't think it will get cancelled ... immediately. .. But I do think that it might start out on broadcast (as well as CBS Daytime's standard, last five-episodes available for free streaming deal), but then eventually get moved to Paramount+ for streaming-only. .. If Days can make it on Peacock with something under a million unique viewers, then something like this probably could as well. .. It's all about adding eyeballs to the streaming platforms now, and soaps are good at being "gateway" shows, since they typically bring fans to a platform several times per week -- the hope being that these viewers stick around and click on other content to watch while they're there.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | July 5, 2024 10:58 PM |

Soaps are expensive programming.

The actual storylines need to be different.

Its weird I loved OLTL and Y&R as a kid. Watched both off and on until 2011 or so.
I could never watch a soap today. They all look horrendously awful.
I think this will either massively HIT or massively bomb.
For the genre I hope it makes it-
Especially for crew members, ect-

A new soap opera in 2025? Please. Soaps are barely surviving. No one wants a new soap.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | August 3, 2024 12:12 PM |
I'm sorry but I can't read. Did they say if this is going to be a "daytime" show or on Paramount+ like DOOL is on Peacock?
by Anonymous | reply 139 | August 3, 2024 11:50 PM |
The Gates is schedules to air on CBS, likely immediately after Bold & Beautiful in the time slot currently occupied by The Talk.
Paramount+ will likely also carry it. Paramount+ also airs Y&R and B&B.

Okay. I can see a first year Emmy nom for Best Drama (everyone gets those) and maybe Writing out of the big seven.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | August 4, 2024 12:18 AM |
R140, they haven't announced the timeslot for the Gates yet.
My guess is they will 'cradle' it in between Y&R and B&B.
When B&B took over for Capitol, CBS changed the lineup. it used to go Y&R, ATWT, Capitol, GL; then it became Y&R, B&B, ATWT, GL -- at the height of Doug Marland's fantastic run in Oakdale.
I think CBS will do the same and this could be bad news for B&B IF The Gates isn't solid. But I say give MVJ a shot. let's see what she does.

Soaps are expensive to produce. Waste of time and money.

[quote] My guess is they will 'cradle' it in between Y&R and B&B.
The CBS Daytime schedule isn't the same in every city.
Often you'll find a half-hour of local news in between Y&R and B&B (e.g. San Francisco, Denver, Sacramento). In other cities the shows have a totally different order. In Honolulu, the schedule runs TPIR, Hot Bench, B&B, LMAD, Y&R, then The Talk. In Seattle, the schedule runs LMAD, TPIR, Y&R, and hour of local news, then The Talk, and finally B&B.

Obviously, the metrics for what makes a daily soap opera financially-feasible have changed with streaming .
Otherwise, Peacock wouldn't have decided to pick up and stream Days of our Lives and make it one of its "Originals" (via subscription) nor would U.S.-based Amazon Freevee have opted to resurrect "Neighbours" from the Aussie dustbin (and now stream it free with ads in the U.S. and U.K.). That move by Amazon was like adding a new daily soap opera in America.

Rumor has it they are going to poach Mel Thomas Scott from Y&R for name recognition and have her play a ‘Victoria Rowell type’ complete with afro wig.

Do we anticipate that there will be anything gay in this soap? .. I only have time to add new serial drama to my limited viewing hours if the soap contains at least a measure of content that actually interests (speaks to) me. That's why I started watching Neighbours after Amazon began producing/streaming the soap in the U.S. The Aaron-Logan storyline is quite different as gay stories go, and I've found it very intriguing.

Maybe the gates weren't wide enough and he got stuck. Grease his thighs and dangle a cheeseburger in his face to coax him through.

R159. But don't you want his long winded, unfunny, uninteresting, and unintelligent options on how soaps SHOULD be made? It's a shame Luke Kerr slept with him and made him a podcast "personality."

Team Jamey!
by Anonymous | reply 162 | August 10, 2024 8:49 AM |
Jamey used to be laughed at here; folks would say he'd always be a blogger. Then, he got his break and has written for multiple shows.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | August 10, 2024 8:52 AM |
Yeah but Jamey’s own show bombed bigtime. Working for Corday, who he used to villify, must frost his fat carcass.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | August 10, 2024 12:23 PM |
Sincere props to Jamey for achieving what he has.
But I still say I've sat through enough Wishful Castings and story imaginings during his DC days to know that his tastes and ideas are unimaginative Dynasty retreads. We need something else in daytime beyond Oh No You Di'int and slaps and catfights.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | August 10, 2024 2:12 PM |
Fat jokes aside, I have no issue with LaGiddens pursuing his dream and making it a reality, but the fact remains, when he'd go off on one of his tangents on what he'd do at some soap or another, only about 1 in 10 ideas impressed me. I found "Ambitions" unwatchable; as did a lot of viewers. I was out by the fourth episode. If you look at the ratings, I wasn't alone. The numbers just kept dropping weekly. The demo was halved. Even when they got to the finale, viewers who may have still been mildly interested didn't return.

Show isn't debuting until January.
It's August now and CBS is more focused on promoting its fall primetime lineup which debuts in September
I imagine in late October or early November, they'll start promoting the show.

There are 40 million black people in the USA-- that is bigger than some countries or about the same population. That is enough to sustain a TV show. Not everything has to do well in foreign markets.
by Anonymous | reply 183 | October 6, 2024 4:51 PM |
Apparently, a soap can now survive even if it's able to attract something less than a million unique IPs streaming it ... only on the 'Cock!
by Anonymous | reply 184 | October 6, 2024 7:52 PM |
Who’s to say it will only attract a black audience?
People who like soaps have been stuck choosing from a bunch of tired shows.
I suspect people will be intrigued to try it out. If they can establish a couple of strong characters right off, they could get traction.
Honestly, none of these shows are built for decades-long runs.
by Anonymous | reply 185 | October 6, 2024 9:41 PM |
r184 Young and the restless only gets 3 million views on traditional TV. Not sure how much it gets on streaming, but if only black people watch (and there will always be some non-blacks) it can still muster 2 or 3 million.
