Monticello - 1980

I’ve been watching Edge — I started with the murder of Margo Huntington Dorn and am now at the climax of the Draper Scott/Kirk Michaels story from August 1980.

The show is tightly written and fun to watch.

Any Edge fans out there?

That was a great storyline. Edge had many. many great storylines in its time.

The Sky Whitney story that comes next is superb.

I've been an Edge fan since the Adam and Nicole days!

I loved Mansion of the Damned which lead to the Murder of Margo Dorn which lead to the Kirk Michaels story which lead to the Puppet Murders. I liked the Sky and Raven years, but not as much as that 78-80/81 period before Sky showed up. Elliot Dorn was such a slut and I loved the way he operated. I also found Logan Swift to be sexy sexy sexy.

by Anonymousreply 3May 6, 2023 2:31 AM

The climax of Nancy being held captive of the Rexford Clinic has to be my favorite soap opera reveal.

Beth Bryson (Doris Belak) ranks up there with Sven on Another World in terms of villains. She was such a bitch.

I freaking love Raven. Sharon Gabet auctioned off some copies of her portrait from the Whitney mansion for charity. I bought one and have to get it framed.

There's an online community of EDGE fans. We were spoiled by great soaps back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 4May 6, 2023 8:59 PM

I had such a crush on Larkin Malloy as Sky Whitney when I was a kid.

I was too young for it all to make sense at the time, but all I really knew was that I loved his character.

Interestingly enough, I never really cared for the characters he played on subsequent soaps -- Kyle on GL and then Travis on AMC. I tried to like those characters, but they weren't anywhere near as exciting to me as Sky Whitney.

by Anonymousreply 5May 6, 2023 11:07 PM

I was in love with Mark Arnold, and my first boyfriend looked almost exactly like him.

I LOVE the final episode from December 1984!

by Anonymousreply 6May 6, 2023 11:09 PM

Me, too, R6!

And as much as I loved Mark Arnold in Edge, that is how much I HAAAATED Lori Laughlin and her wet cardboard character.

Hate her to this day.

Loved sexy beast Calvin, too (RIP, Irving Allen Lee).

by Anonymousreply 7May 6, 2023 11:14 PM

Aside from Mark Arnold, I thought the porn gays were hot, but REALLY liked Charles Whatever his name was. SEXLICIOUS!

I hated LL and the Desperate Housewife.

I like Chris the Detective.

Who was the thin red-haired matriarch? She was cool, as was the Old Lady.

by Anonymousreply 8May 6, 2023 11:18 PM

Charles Flohe (his OG name), R8?

Don't recall what he changed it to.

by Anonymousreply 9May 6, 2023 11:20 PM

r9

by Anonymousreply 10May 6, 2023 11:30 PM

Charles Grant?

by Anonymousreply 11May 6, 2023 11:30 PM

That's it, R11!

by Anonymousreply 12May 6, 2023 11:35 PM

Nancy Karr.

Draper was cute, but watching episodes now, he gives off a MAGA vibe.

I still don’t believe Mark Arnold is “straight.”

by Anonymousreply 14May 6, 2023 11:56 PM

[quote]Draper was cute, but watching episodes now, he gives off a MAGA vibe.

Tony Craig never had much of a acting career after leaving Edge in 1981. His last credit on IMDB is in 1984.

Someone posting here many years ago said Tony Craig was always chasing various get rich quick schemes. Maybe he got rich quick and retired from the business.

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2023 12:03 AM

I assume people know about the Edge of Night Homepage with lots of details about the show.

by Anonymousreply 16May 7, 2023 12:07 AM

R11, he later changed it to Grant Chambers

by Anonymousreply 17May 7, 2023 2:49 PM

the one who did it for me was Christopher Jarrett who played Damian Tyler; talk, dark and handsome, the only thing thicker than his chest was his wavy black hair.

I'd heard a rumor for years he died along with Joel Carruthers, Irving Allen Lee and Dennis Parker....but, no. A photo of him with white hair surfaced years ago. He's straight married and out of the acting biz.

by Anonymousreply 18May 7, 2023 2:54 PM

Tony Craig was a blue collar dude from Pittsburgh - and after his acting career he moved back to Pittsburgh and now is part of the staff at PNC Park, the baseball field.

by Anonymousreply 19May 7, 2023 6:15 PM

I started watching this show when I was in college and continued watching it until it ended in1984.

A couple of years ago I began re-watching the episodes on YouTube in order, beginning with the episodes a few months before Margo was murdered, (when Farley Granger was on).

Right now I'm at the June 1982 point, when they pulled the scam on Raven and had her fake-arrested.

Some observations watching this the second time around:

I thought the Smiley storyline would never end. A little of Frank Gorshin goes a very long way.

I adore Raven and the actress who played her. Her line readings are sometimes hilariously campy. I never watched Dynasty, but are there elements of Alexis in Raven (or vise versa)?

Skylar Whitney had a hot ass that will live forever - probably the hottest ass on that show, which is really saying something considering there's also Calvin Stoner's.

Nora Fulton is the nuttiest psycho who ever psychoed.

Kelly (regardless of which actor played him) was a flat out werdo.

The actor playing dumb-as-a-rock Johnny Gentry sure was pretty.

I can't watch any scenes involving Derek Mallory without having flashbacks of Dennis Parker's work in porn.

by Anonymousreply 20May 7, 2023 7:10 PM

Things were so different then - that an actor could be in gay porn AND on daytime.

Of course it was pre-Internet days and no one was going to see his XXX clips on their iPhones.....

by Anonymousreply 21May 7, 2023 7:15 PM

[quote]A little of Frank Gorshin goes a very long way.

So true! That storyline went on too long. Just seemed to tread water in order to give Gorshin more scenes to play.

On paper, that likely seemed like a hit storyline, But it didn't play out well at all.

by Anonymousreply 22May 7, 2023 10:57 PM

Next to Dark Shadows, EON had to have had the biggest gay/bi cast.

by Anonymousreply 23May 9, 2023 4:40 AM

Poor Dennis Parker was shitting his pants and wearing diapers in his last scenes. You could tell that he wasn’t well and dying from the aids.

by Anonymousreply 24May 9, 2023 11:00 AM

If you click the link at R2 (Donald May obit), you can watch the climax of the Serena/Josie story, with Adam putting his client Serena on the witness stand and finally outing her as split personality Josie. It’s pretty riveting - Louise Shaffer is just superb as Serena/Josie. When she’s outed and finally appears as Josie, she lets out this eerie wail and then we fade out. Over the end credits the ABC announcer tells us to watch Donny & Marie that night, so you know this was a good old-fashioned Friday cliffhanger. They don’t make ‘em like that anymore.

by Anonymousreply 25May 9, 2023 11:30 AM

Lois Kobbee was a snatch eater.

by Anonymousreply 26May 9, 2023 12:02 PM

Lois was the dykiest dyke whoever dyked. A bull dyke.

by Anonymousreply 27May 9, 2023 12:25 PM

I saw Louise Shaffer play many soap roles -- Rae on Ryan's Hope, Stephanie on Search, Goldie on AMC -- but none of them captivated me like her turn as Serena/Josie. She was masterful in that role!

by Anonymousreply 28May 9, 2023 5:07 PM

The Edge of Night was my favorite daytime drama. I watched it from around 1979 until it ended in 1984. I loved the Nora Fulton character. She was so much fun to watch because she caused so much trouble. She hit Mitzi Martin with a car and set Sid's Tavern on fire (while Poppy Johnson was in the restaurant). She hit Nurse Barbara Montgomery in the head with a blunt object, causing Barbara to go into a coma. Nora stood by while Miles Cavanaugh was thought to be the culprit who beat Barbara. Nora also tried to destroy Miles and Nicole's marriage by taking it upon herself to tell Derek Malory that his wife Jinx was dying. This caused friction between Miles (Jinx's doctor) and Nicole because Nicole accidentally told Nora about Jinx.

Nora was not on the show for very long, but she was a fun villain to watch. Interestingly, I learned from watching a Locher Room episode on YouTube, the woman who played Poppy Johnson on EON actually auditioned for the part of Nora Fulton first, but she did not get the role. Catherine Bruno did such a great job as Nora that it's hard for me to see anyone else in the role.

I miss the good old days of soaps.

by Anonymousreply 29May 9, 2023 6:09 PM

R5, After he left television, our brother Larkin taught acting. On September 26, 2016 , his 62nd birthday, had heart attack. Died three days later of complications.

by Anonymousreply 30May 9, 2023 6:25 PM

Larkin was a nice guy by all accounts, but he had problems with addictions. He was fired from Loving because of that. There was a video while on vacation in Italy around the same time where he was drunk or high, hanging out of his hotel room window, waving a sword around and yelling at people on the streets below. It was bizarre and he got arrested and sent back the United States. He looked much older than his actual age in his later years. Sad, he died relatively young, but his past addictions probably paid a role in it.

He was said to be a very good acting coach. He was the on-set coach at As The Would Turns for close to decade, close to the end of the run of the show.

by Anonymousreply 31May 9, 2023 6:42 PM

The video of Larkin drunk or high was on one of the tabloid show of the time, A Current Affair maybe.

by Anonymousreply 32May 9, 2023 6:45 PM

Wasn't he also naked in that video?

by Anonymousreply 33May 9, 2023 6:46 PM

I remember he was at least shirtless. They just showed his torso while he was leaning out of the window. It was so long ago, but they might have also showed him getting arrested. It might have been blurred if he was indeed naked then.

by Anonymousreply 34May 9, 2023 6:55 PM

Larkin was a homosexualist.

by Anonymousreply 35May 9, 2023 7:06 PM

I belong to an Edge of Night facebook group its terrific Sharon Rose Gabet belongs and is an active group member. The best question lately would and Edge of Night reboot be welcomed on streaming.....This would be a great thing for fans of the Soap!

by Anonymousreply 36May 9, 2023 7:19 PM

I loved Nora Fulton, she was the reason I started watching. Catherine Bruno had the best hair.

by Anonymousreply 37May 9, 2023 7:27 PM

Lots of turd burgling behind the scenes. Joel Crothers (when Veleka was out of town), Dennis Parker, Irving Allen Lee, Allen Fawcett, Chris Jarrett, Larkin Malloy.

by Anonymousreply 38May 9, 2023 7:47 PM

A reboot of Edge works ONLY if you can get the original scripts... I don't know if that's possible. With original scripts you have to start looking for recordings (kinescopes?). Costuming and set design are key and difficult.

It would be fun though, wouldn't it? I've visited the website linked above and I think it's a refreshed version of a site I visited years ago. In the earlier site there was a Word or Excel document that listed every murder, every suspect every guilty character, every method by year. It was great fun to read through!

by Anonymousreply 39May 9, 2023 8:52 PM

Oops, I should add that the website linked here has a list of murder trials, but it's missing a key point - the method. In that old list there was a column... fell down an elevator shaft - stabbed, stabbed, shot, fell off a balcony, poisoned. Again, fun to read!

by Anonymousreply 40May 9, 2023 8:55 PM

Jesus Christ dumbasses. Do you really think that a low rated soap opera cancelled 40 years ago will be rebooted? How dumb you all are!!!! And besides, P&G owned it and they will never give the rights to it. Snap into reality, dumbasses.

by Anonymousreply 41May 9, 2023 11:10 PM

I liked watching Edge in the afternoons after school. I had a crush on Michael Conforti, who played Jeremy. Not a great actor or a huge role, but he was my type …pale skin, dark hair, dark eyes. He went on to be a writer on several soaps, including AMC and ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 42May 9, 2023 11:36 PM

I stopped watching the day they dropped THE from THE Edge of Night. Fat Del Emerson, Fat Gunther, Fat Mitzi, Fat Mike Karr, Fat Beth Correll. Fat actors=Fat title. I've never recovered.

by Anonymousreply 43May 10, 2023 12:37 AM

Don’t forget FAT Geraldine Saxon. And FAT Elliot Dorn.

by Anonymousreply 44May 10, 2023 12:55 AM

R2, I'm with you. I was just a kid, but can vividly remember the Stephanie Martin Murder Mystery. Martin was a villain that everyone in Monticello wanted dead. She was played by Alice Hirson, who later played Ellen De Generas' mother on her sitcom. Nicole Travis stood trial for her murder, and the trial was one of the best I've ever seen. EON had a style unlike any other soap, kinda like a daytime Perry Mason.

by Anonymousreply 45May 10, 2023 1:19 AM

No offense, bitches, but I highly doubt there's a market for a reboot of bottom-rated soap that's been off the air for 40 years. Of course, it's just a hunch. Though they tried, they couldn't get a rebooted AMC greenlit, and that's still somewhat part of the TV cultural landscape, so how on earth would Edge of Night have a chance?

by Anonymousreply 46May 10, 2023 1:38 AM

[quote]kinda like a daytime Perry Mason

That was the original concept for the show. A daytime version of Perry Mason.

Perry Mason creator Earle Stanley Garner was set to create and write the show, but got into a tiff with CBS a few months before Edge was to debut. So, they got Perry Mason radio show writer Irving Vedig to adapt the Perry Mason concept to TV and to HW.

To further the Perry Mason connection, they also got actor John Larkin, best known as the voice of Perry Mason on radio, to star in Edge of Night as Mike Karr.

by Anonymousreply 47May 10, 2023 2:15 AM

R46, I guess it would all depend upon how the re-boot was constructed and marketed. There's an appetite for programs that create a time period (Mad Men, Marvelous Maisel) with costumes, set pieces, dialogue. Throw in some juicy soap plot points and a murder + mystery, could be something - of course, on a streaming service.

by Anonymousreply 48May 10, 2023 9:27 AM

The Edge of Night group understanding that most of the actors are dead or very elderly was thinking that a creation of children of legacy character..... Adam Drake Jr, children of Sky Whitney and Raven Whitney etc. Also a hard edged crime driven soap that could be more erotic than traditional daytime soaps. We all know its not happening but for huge fans of the show its just fun!

by Anonymousreply 49May 10, 2023 4:49 PM

I loved cello cherries as a child

by Anonymousreply 50May 10, 2023 5:32 PM

When Edge of Night moved to ABC in 1975, there was talk of repeating the episodes in late night, say at 11:30 p.m. or 12 midnight. ABC was interested as was Proctor & Gamble, but they never could reach an agreement about the price for that then-unheard of rebroadcast.

The actors were also putting up a fuss about getting paid for that rebroadcast. ABC and P&G wanted to pay the actors a minimal amount but Donald May was leading the charge wanting a bigger payout.

I think this is a huge loss and a missed opportunity. Edge would have worked perfectly as a late night soap opera. Might still be on the air today if they had been able to work out an arrangement.

by Anonymousreply 51May 10, 2023 5:41 PM

I started watching around the time Jeanne Ruskin played Laurie Ann Karr, who was playing piano at the New Moon Cafe, and she fell in love with Johnny Dallas. Loved that storyline. I caught the tail end of Dorothy Lyman's hilarious Elly Jo Jamison, who was trying to trap Orin Hillyer into marrying her. Lester Rawlins(Orinn) was just great, what a face! Grant Aleksander reminded me of a young Donald May, he would have made a good Adam Drake Jr.

by Anonymousreply 52May 10, 2023 6:23 PM

Will you old fat fraus stop talking about a reboot! Please. It will never ever ever ever ever happen. Ever. Proctor & Gamble still owns the show and they have NO interest in selling. None.

by Anonymousreply 53May 10, 2023 6:41 PM

I loved Holland Taylor's portrayal of the evil Denise Kavanaugh.

by Anonymousreply 54May 10, 2023 6:44 PM

R49, I wonder if a re-boot could be launched as a "Monticello Diaries"... the grandchild of a major character finds a journal of one of Monticello's long dead (but lead Edge character)... they begin a blog or podcast about the town's tawdry past. The files of the DAs office become part of the storyline... and then other tales of town come to light...

by Anonymousreply 55May 10, 2023 9:01 PM

Intersting concept r55.

I think that could work. Mike Karr II (Mike's grandson) is cleaning out some of his grandfathers papers and comes across the journal with notes on various murders. Great jumping off point.

So, you could jump all around in time. You could have mysteries set in the 60s and 70s as well as contemporary mysteries.

by Anonymousreply 56May 10, 2023 10:04 PM

I like it R56... the possibilities can continue unfold as other journals are found or someone decides to back into the archives of the local Monticello paper, someone else begins looking at old VHS tapes from WMON the local TV station... maybe we should have copywritten those ideas before posting them on an anonymous message board.

by Anonymousreply 57May 10, 2023 10:53 PM

Adam Drake III could find some of his grandfather's old journals and some unused footage from some of grandmother's old TV interviews.

Meanwhile, Adam's boyfriend Sky Whitney III could uncover some of his great aunt Geraldine's old journals, diaries and papers going back to the early 1900s. Lots of mysteries to be uncovered there.

Meanwhile, Sky's sister Charlotte Alexander Whitney could be a private eye while her boyfriend Miles Cavanaugh III is a MD and performs all on Monticello's medical autopsies.

by Anonymousreply 58May 11, 2023 12:06 AM

and voila! R58, you've got the start of new series... of course, there are many people who either left or were run out of Monticello... their spawn and descendents could return as well. A lot of possibilities.

by Anonymousreply 59May 11, 2023 9:26 AM

Even though this is just a dream for thought of us who love this show......Thank you for the creativity given to this. Edge was such a different soap and was mishandled by ABC toward the end of its run!

by Anonymousreply 60May 11, 2023 11:25 AM

Is this the soap with Scotty Brice?

by Anonymousreply 61May 11, 2023 3:04 PM

Locher interviewed Constance McCashin today!

(Placed here because, to me, KNOTS felt like a nighttime P&G soap).

by Anonymousreply 62May 12, 2023 9:52 PM

Vee, who’s in the biz, arranged the Locher Room interview. Vee is in the biz. He’s writing all 4 soaps because of the writers strike. Vee is in the biz.

by Anonymousreply 63May 12, 2023 9:58 PM

[R63] who is this Vee I’m always hearing about?

by Anonymousreply 64May 12, 2023 11:46 PM

Ignore it r63. There is a lunatic on here who posts about some sad little drama involving posters on some soap opera message board.

Imagine being 80 years old and apparently still alert, and using your dwindling time on Earth to promote that bullshit.

Sad!

by Anonymousreply 65May 13, 2023 1:37 AM

R64 If you don’t know Vee, you are out of it. Vee is in the biz and knows everyone and everything about everyone. Vee is the expert of everything. Vee is in the biz.

by Anonymousreply 66May 13, 2023 2:57 AM

Vee=Valerie Bryson

by Anonymousreply 67May 13, 2023 5:38 AM

Will facial wasting and KS lesions be casting requirements for the reboot as well?

by Anonymousreply 68May 13, 2023 12:49 PM

Vee who is in the biz, you know, will be helming the OLTL reboot with Dumb Dylan who changed his name at SON. Vee is in the biz, you know, and Dumb Dylan, is an idiot, you know. Dumb Dylan has the scoop before simple creepy John! And Eeyore Carl is still depressed af!

by Anonymousreply 69May 13, 2023 2:17 PM

Come on people, stay on point and ignore this wretched "Vee" and OLTL... this is about "The Edge of Night".

For the re-boot, does it begin in color in the present day and as Adam Drake III begins reading the journal, will the show switch to black & white? All of what he learns by reading is re-enacted and that's in b&w. Could be very cool, give the flashbacks a good noir feel.

Here's a question... is AD III just perusing his grandfather's journal or is there a purpose? A modern day mystery or murder in Monticello that he thinks is somehow tied to the past?

by Anonymousreply 70May 13, 2023 4:20 PM

I posted r45. I just remembered that the actual killer of evil Stephanie Martin was the actress who played Liz Matthews on Another World ( not the great Audra Lindley, but the second one. I can't remember her name, but a lot of people on here infer that she's a lesbian).

I loved how the mysteries on EON were beautifully set up, how there was a list of plausible suspects a mile long, and how the trials went on forever, but somehow you never lost interest.

by Anonymousreply 72May 14, 2023 12:51 AM

You dumb fucks realize that P&G will never ever ever ever ever give up the rights, right? The Edge of Night will never be rebooted. Meanwhile, Vee is still in the biz and dumbass Dylan has all of the YR scoops because he gets the SOD emails before anyone. Meanwhile, Vee, who’s in the biz, HATES Pervsuds. Such drama!!!!

by Anonymousreply 73May 14, 2023 12:52 AM

[R72] I think the 2nd Aunt Liz was Irene Daly

by Anonymousreply 74May 14, 2023 12:55 AM

Will the reboot be called "THE Edge of Night" or "Edge of Night"? If the latter, count me out! I refuse to watch, in protest.

by Anonymousreply 75May 14, 2023 3:21 AM

Edge of Night got cancelled because they took THE out of the title. The same happened to THE Guiding Light.

by Anonymousreply 76May 14, 2023 6:26 AM

Irene Dailey was the 4th Lez, er Liz on AW, but you got it.

by Anonymousreply 77May 14, 2023 9:07 AM

Gail Kobe and Pam Long ruined my life when they fired Fat Ed! Nothing was ever the same after THE GUIDING LIGHT dropped THE from the title!!

by Anonymousreply 78May 14, 2023 9:41 AM

Any vids out there of Lois Kibbee eating out Irene Daily’s snatch?

by Anonymousreply 79May 14, 2023 10:52 AM

Doug Marland fired fat Ed. Maybe Mart Hulswit wasn't into getting his toes sucked by a pervy head writer.

by Anonymousreply 80May 14, 2023 11:30 AM

Doug Marland was a weirdo. He liked his toes sucked, but only by men. He hated women. He had Gloria Monty’s image etched into his toilet bowl so that he could shit on her face. Strange man indeed.

by Anonymousreply 81May 14, 2023 12:15 PM

To their credit, Kobe and Long brought on Fat Reva, Fat Rick, Fat H.B., Fat Billy, Fat Beth, Fat India, and Fat Sally.

by Anonymousreply 82May 14, 2023 1:00 PM

Take your inane chatter about that CBS soap to a different thread... Christ - why do people think it appropriate to just veer off and start dominating a thread with a different subject?

by Anonymousreply 83May 14, 2023 1:59 PM

It's the mentally ill soap loon, R83. Muriel lets it ride roughshod on these threads.

by Anonymousreply 84May 14, 2023 2:02 PM

Here's an EoN question:

The character of attorney Cliff Nelson was credited to actor Ernie Townsend during the show's credits

But on IMDB he's credited as Ernie Pysher.

Why the name change?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85May 14, 2023 2:49 PM

Because of this thread, I started rewatching Mansion of the Damned on YouTube. I forgot about the incest undertones in that storyline. Margaret Colin was only 20 in that story. And Denny Albee's eyes were mesmerizing.

by Anonymousreply 86May 14, 2023 2:54 PM

R85, I think, from a quick search, it would have something to do with the gay porn Pysher participated in before TEoN.

by Anonymousreply 87May 14, 2023 7:10 PM

Ernie Townsend is a gay. Question answered.

by Anonymousreply 88May 14, 2023 7:55 PM

What proof do you have that Ernie Townsend is gay? He was handsome and effortlessly masculine, so I doubt he's gay.

by Anonymousreply 89May 16, 2023 6:06 PM

I thought it was Dennis Parker who did gay porn.

You're saying Ernie Townsend did it too? Never heard that before.

by Anonymousreply 90May 16, 2023 6:22 PM

Joel Crothers and Dennis Parker used to give each other blowjobs in their dressing room during down times.

by Anonymousreply 91May 16, 2023 6:23 PM

Nice piece if fiction, r91. Joel was romantically involved with actress Velekka Gray when he was on EON and up till his death, so he and Dennis Parker were not engaging in oral sex.

by Anonymousreply 92May 16, 2023 6:49 PM

Did Joel catch the AIDS from Velekka, then?

by Anonymousreply 93May 17, 2023 6:18 PM

Is Elizabeth Hubbard’s son destitute and living in Monticello now?

by Anonymousreply 94May 18, 2023 12:33 AM

I heard rumors that Lois Kibbee was of the lesbionic persuasion.

by Anonymousreply 95May 18, 2023 1:23 AM

r94 no, he is living with MAGA Martha Byrne

by Anonymousreply 96May 18, 2023 2:35 AM

R92 Back in those days, soap couples were very close to each other. The soap mags from back then state how Joel and Velekka used to go on triple dates with Geri Court and David O’Brien; and John Wesley Shipp and Marsha Clark. True love at its best.

by Anonymousreply 97May 18, 2023 12:38 PM

R97 don't forget Francesca James and Peter White!

by Anonymousreply 98May 18, 2023 3:06 PM

It's nice when soap couples start dating IRL. Another example is Jean LeClerc and Kate Collins. They were dating for a while during their AMC heyday. I remember a spread in SOD of them galivanting all over NYC and proclaiming each other as their soulmate. I assume they eventually broke up, since she went on to marry someone else.

by Anonymousreply 99May 18, 2023 6:32 PM

Weren't AMC's Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams dating at one time? They made such a cute couple on screen.

by Anonymousreply 100May 18, 2023 9:09 PM

The beautiful and happy couple.

I don’t know about Goutman trying to revive the show, but I think he self-published a novel with the same title.

by Anonymousreply 128June 8, 2023 12:05 AM

Goutman played a con man named Matt Sharkey on Edge in 1980-81.

Interesting he would name one of his detective stories after the series. And the name of one of the main families in the book is Whitney. But there seems to be no direct connection between the series and his novel, just those homages.

Here's the description of the novel:

[quote]NYPD Detective David McIntire never thought he'd see his fiancé again after she left him five years ago. When the two reunite she is no longer Mary Burr but Sister Mary Catherine, a Catholic nun. Despite his resistance, she enlists him to investigate the death of her brother, who reportedly committed suicide while doing missionary work in Argentina. As they work together to uncover the truth, what they find pits them against one of New York’s oldest and most powerful families, the Whitneys, whose patriarch will do anything to protect his and the Church’s secrets. Always meeting at the edge of night in the catacombs beneath the parish church, they discover that the strange underground labyrinth possesses the key to unlock the mystery and bring the Whitney empire crashing down with it. Edge of Night is a high-adrenaline suspense thriller that travels across continents and a hundred years into the past, proving in the end that the corridors of power are no match for the enduring strength of love.

All I know is what Goutman told a soap reporter I know. That he had tried to revive EDGE. He didn't want to go on the record or elaborate. He might today.

I know he used Larkin Malloy as an acting coach and in a small role on ATWT. He could have gotten Sharon Gabet back, I bet. You build from there.

Forrest Compton and Ann Flood were still around; the only died recently so I'm sure 18 years ago they could have worked a little.

I don't deny the man was/is a hard worker but he rue-whinned ATWT in my opinion. The rotating Craigs, really? Scott Bryce was Craig. All the Port Charles actors coming over -- Pinson, Wilson, Shriner, Lindstrom, Herring.

Howarth YELLS in every role he plays. It's only a matter of time with Austin on GH.

by Anonymousreply 134June 8, 2023 3:20 PM

Since both ATWT and Edge of Night debuted on the same day -- April 2, 1956 -- perhaps Goutman wanted to include some kind of mention of Edge or Monticello during ATWT's 50th celebration.

Perhaps Sky and Raven Whitney showing up at a party. Or Bob and Kim mentioning they're going to visit some old friends in Monticello.

Or maybe bring in some Edge characters to Oakdale for a short story arc.

by Anonymousreply 135June 8, 2023 5:19 PM

r133, I've never watched a moment of Edge of Night. What a pleasant surprise to see Lady Eyes-a-Buggin' as Hilda, I mean Louise. And the guy who engineered the plan with Iris to take over Cory Publishing with Iris in the first scene.

by Anonymousreply 136June 8, 2023 9:04 PM

I give Goutman credit for working in Springfield and Bay City into dialogue in finale ATWT episodes.

That's it.

The best part of ATWT's final weeks were Bob, Kim, John and Chris's medical crisis.

[quote] I'm guessing that there are no existing tapes of EON back in the early days with Laurence Hugo as Mike Karr.

EON was still being performed live until it moved to ABC in 1975 and was the last soap to move to videotape. (As the World Turns was the penultimate.) Prior to that EON was only pre-recorded on tape (or saved on kinescope) in advance for broadcast on holidays so the cast and crew did not have to spend Christmases, etc. in the studio.

R136 Stage actress Evalyn Baron played Louise. She was on "Another World" for nearly a year as Felicia's bumbling secretary, Miss Devon. She did look like she could be VW's sister.

Constance Ford and Irene Dailey played murderers on the show who stabbed their victims.

Agreed that Louise Shaffer was super as Serena/Josie, and am glad that there are a handful of episodes with her out there. The Edge website has some rare clips of Lois Kibbee during her first stint on the show with Anthong Call, as well as a scene with Richard Schoberg (Kevin Jamison), later AMC's Tom Cudahy.

Lois Smith was reunited with former Somerset husband Joel Crothers, playing the mother of crazed Davey Oakes. Kibbee was on Sonerset at the same time they were.

Getting a DUI was like getting an Emmy for the average P&G actress.

by Anonymousreply 156June 21, 2023 11:14 AM

There's no real way to tell if P&G did destroy their library, becayse P&G the TV arm (Telenext) simply does not exist any more.

So I'd be more apt to believe it. A company with no employees probably isn't minding the storage lockers.

by Anonymousreply 157June 21, 2023 1:49 PM

I do believe that the official library before 1978 was destroyed, but I also believe that there are more copies in private collections than we know. Every time someone with rare material starts posting things, they get beat up on by the fans and just stop because it's not worth the trouble.

by Anonymousreply 158June 21, 2023 3:27 PM

[quote] I do believe that the official library before 1978 was destroyed

Uh, P&G didn't start saving shows until 1979 so we knew that was the case. We're talking about 1979 and after in the case of the remaining P&G library.

R118 Met Joel Crothers in a bar, commenting on knowing who he was, he at first denied it. When I reminded him we were both actors at the time he was in "Mr. Pennypacker" on Broadway, he relaxed. Told me P&G had a Morals Clause that could get him fired for publicly being gay. We talked about mutual kid actors in the '50s. Didn't exchange numbers. If memory serves, when an actor died of AIDS, P&G said it was cancer.

Thanks for sharing, R161. Very interesting. This immediately made me think of Chris Bernau, and the sort of weirdness that's existed about Chris and his cause of death (which was never made public) makes a bit more sense now, if that clause was true.

by Anonymousreply 164June 21, 2023 8:31 PM

[quote]If memory serves, when an actor died of AIDS, P&G said it was cancer.

Joel Crothers died of AIDS in November 1985. At that point, no one acknowledged publicly that someone died of AIDS. It was always of the related causes. In Joel's case lymphoma. That was standard procedure at the time.

by Anonymousreply 165June 21, 2023 8:33 PM

Joel was on Santa Barbara, a non-P&G show, at the time, and I doubt New World or whoever owned SB had a morals clause.

by Anonymousreply 166June 21, 2023 9:27 PM

In the early days of AIDS it was not uncommon for a public obit to list a secondary cause of death, and not AIDS. It was all part of the stigma of the disease.

Chris Bernau of Gudiing Light died of AIDS in 1989.

But even in her memoir, written in 2011, Kim Zimmer said that she heard Bernau died of a "tropical disease."

by Anonymousreply 171June 21, 2023 10:30 PM

R170 yes, that struck me as SO odd. I just wonder if Bernau swore his costars to secrecy and Zimmer complied....even all those years later?

His death is listed as a heart attack brought on by AIDS in Wikipedia but has no citations.

I remember We Love Soaps had him very prominently listed on the World AIDS Day page and then suddenly....he was not there. So not sure why he was removed from that list.

by Anonymousreply 172June 21, 2023 10:33 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happened.

But why make up this tropical disease nonsense? All she had to do was say how much she liked working with Bernau and how much she missed him. She could have done that without mentioning how he died.

Does anyone know/remember how and when Jayne Bentsen lady the role of Nicole?

How much time elapsed before Lisa Sloan began? Was the actor change tied to Nicole’s aplastic anemia story?

Thanks in advance.

by Anonymousreply 180June 22, 2023 1:20 AM

Bentzen *

by Anonymousreply 181June 22, 2023 1:20 AM

R180, the replacements for Nicole were ridiculous ... much too young. I loved Maeve McGuire from her first day on EON. Her storyline with Donald May was one of my all-time favorites.

by Anonymousreply 182June 22, 2023 1:23 AM

Below is a link with a write-up of Nicole's story over the years. It gets skimpy toward the end, leaving out lots of details, but it does give you a good sense of her beginnings.

As I recall, Nancy and Geraldine were trying to convince Maeve McGuire's Nicole that she would be good for the TV anchor job at WMON. But by the time Nicole finally went to do a screen test for the anchor job, it was Jane Bentzen playing Nicole. This would have been sometime in 1978.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 183June 22, 2023 1:28 AM

LIsa Sloan was mannish looking, but better than the wooden Jayne Bentzen.

by Anonymousreply 184June 22, 2023 2:30 AM

When I started watching EON Jayne Bentzen was playing Nicole. I liked Lisa Sloan in the role better. On the final episode of EON, when Beth and Myles were in the hotel room, I wanted there to be a knock on the door. Expecting room service, Myles would have opened the door. I wanted Nicole (played by Lisa Sloan) to be at the door saying, "Myles, honey, I'm back." Then the camera does a close up of Myles, then Beth, and then finally Nicole again.

by Anonymousreply 185June 22, 2023 10:31 PM

Maeve McGuire is of the lebanese persuasion.

by Anonymousreply 186June 22, 2023 10:35 PM

An angry and jealous Mary Stuart tried to get Maeve fired from Search. Would've been a cold day in hell before Mary would let that McCleary cunt eclipse Jo as matriarch.

by Anonymousreply 187June 23, 2023 2:33 AM

Imagine the cunt off between Helen Wagner and Mary Stuart if Mary had joined ATWT as a recast Edith Hughes after Search ended.

by Anonymousreply 188June 23, 2023 2:55 AM

Lisa Sloan was the only Nicole I ever knew. I thought she was great, very likable, but after seeing Maeve as Elena De Pulionaque (sp?) on AW and later on Search, I could see why folks would accept no substitute. Still, I hated when Nicole died from poisoned makeup coinciding with Henry Slesar leaving the show.

I think Adam Drake Jr. ended up living with Draper and April in London. (I didn't know initially April and Miles were siblings.)

Zimmer probably felt it wasn't her place to say Bernau died of AIDS. I think it was a heart attack technically.

The reason AIDS wasn't listed as a cause of death is because there was a primary way to get it; that was being fucked without a condom.

If they died of lung cancer, you think of them smoking a cigarette. Heart attack? You think of them as eating poorly. and maybe smoking.

So one might read AIDS as a cause of death and that leaves the image of the person in a leather harness, getting penetrated analy with a writhing look on their face.

I'm currently watching episodes being posted in consecutive order daily on MrEdge80s youtube channel from late 1981. A newish character, Jinx Avery, started popping up more and more, a woman with a terminal disease who's a patient of Dr. Miles Cavanaugh. She's played by Kate Capshaw, the future Mrs. Steven Spielberg.

So in the latest episode uploaded yesterday (originally aired Dec 25, 1981) , the voice over announcer says Jinx Avery is now being played by a different actress, Susan McDonald. It seemed so abrupt since Capshaw had appeared in just the previous day's episode (originally broadcast on Dec 24).

So i researched further and discover on her IMDB page that she co-starred in a movie with DL fave Tim Matheson called 'A Little Sex' directed by Bruce Paltrow that was released in early April 1982. (Trailer at link below) . So I figured once she nabbed this movie role she must've told Edge of Night so long with little to no notice.

Then I see someone asks about the Capshaw's departure in the comments and MrEdge80s responds that he asked Sharon Gabet about it and she confirms that that is actually what happened.
