Who reached the pinnacle of success as best as you can from just one hit single? I think Tracy Chapman and her song Fast Car is the epitome of this and how far someone can go with only one huge hit.

And Tracy's 2nd album, Crossroads, while not producing any major chart hits, sold quite well. For a folk artist in the late 80s and into the 90s, Tracy did very well for herself.

R10 eat your mother’s cunt, you flailing Yasss Kween. I’m sure you fell in line last night and subconsciously declared yourself “a huge Tracy Chapman fan!!!”, so you can go along with all the other muppets. What pisses me off about this resurgence is not the popularity for her or the money, but that a bunch of basic bitch douche bags like you are going to beat her and her into the ground until it loses all meaning or emotion and we never wanna hear her sing again. Think Fleetwood Mac and the Dreams song. Sweetie…

Tracy Chapman isn't a one hit wonder. Wtf? "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution", "Baby Can I Hold You" and "Give me one reason " were all hits. That's like calling Nirvana a one hit wonder because none of their other hits were as big as Smells like teen Spirit.

Wrong, R57. Free Man in Paris and Help Me were both hits.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 5, 2024 9:34 PM |
R57, Help Me was actually #7 on the charts and since it was 1974, it meant something.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 5, 2024 9:34 PM |
R62 And it also went to No. 1 on the "Easy Listening" charts, which also was big thing back in the 70s.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | February 5, 2024 9:37 PM |
Joni isn't quite a one hit wonder as You Turn Me On I'm A Radio also made the charts. But she was definitely more of an album artist.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 5, 2024 9:37 PM |
I think Court and Spark was the record that really sort of introduced her to the masses. Raised on Robbery is one of the most accessible and radio friendly songs she did (except for that sob reference).
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 5, 2024 9:39 PM |
R65 If we're talking pop charts, it only went to #46.

Taste of Honey with Boogie Oogie Oogie. Very representative of the time and they even got a Grammy for Best New Artist (which was really controversial). They had a minor hit with the remake of Sukiyaki but not only does BOO live on, the concept that two black women were fronting a band playing guitar and bass is still finding fans.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 5, 2024 9:46 PM |

Sukiyaki was a huge hit in 1981 hitting #3 on the hot 100 and #1 on the R&B and adult contemporary charts.

R83, Minnie Ripperton is hardly a one-hit wonder. Just because they only had 1 number one song, doesn't imply the rest of their catalog went unnoticed. Think Toni Basil, Taco, and Men Without Hats.

Minnie Riperton only had one other song that made the hot 100 and it peaked at #76.

I was going to say.—Tracy Chapman isn’t a one hit wonder. Things were different during that era when indie type artists could have one huge crossover single from the album while selling a ton of records based off the acclaim and touring. The album era was a a different time. A number one song was cool but it was always used as a means to propel album sells. For example Alanis Morisette’s huge selling album produced not one number one single even though the songs are very well known.

by Anonymous | reply 133 | February 7, 2024 12:04 PM |
R132 Nahh. If your entire career is ONLY defined by one song, you're a one-hit wonder. The ONLY song tied to Chapman by CASUAL listeners is "Fast Car." That is the first--and probably only--song that pops into ANYBODY's head when you mention her name. How can you argue that?
Is Britney Spears' "catalog" only defined by "Hit Me Baby One More Time"? What about Cyndi Lauper? Despite "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" being her most recognizable song, people can also list MANY others. Do you think they could tell you any other Tracy Chapman songs off the top? O'Connor, who I'm ALSO a big fan of, is also a one-hit wonder. Neneh Cherry? One-hit wonder even though I can name at least three other songs that were played on MTV. But what is the ONLY song she's known for?
Come on
