Alicia Bridges "Self Applause"

After listening to "Self Applause" I wonder why this was never a number 1 hit and Alicia Bridges never became a bigger star. She really shows of her unique vocal style here. So good!

This was the B-side of "I Love the Nightlife" 45" single.

Listen and give us your thoughts.

Was she a lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 3November 12, 2023 6:49 PM

r3 big time

by Anonymousreply 4November 12, 2023 6:56 PM

Did she ever play a full set for her concert or was she just included as a one hit wonder with other disco divas?

by Anonymousreply 5November 13, 2023 8:55 PM

She looks so ugly at the 1:40 mark in this clip (the face she makes when singing "Ac-Shawn") from Solid Gold.

This is a terrible song, OP. And it would have never charted in any era.

by Anonymousreply 7November 13, 2023 9:23 PM

That being said, I used to love to listen to the B sides of 45s when I was a kid, always keen to discover some unheard gem. It only happened a few times. The only one I can recall was the B-side of Ring My Bell by Anita Ward. It was called If I Could Feel That Old Feeling Again and I loved it as much as RMB. But I haven't listened to it in decades.

I couldn't make it through the whole song, OP. Was this during a drug phase?

by Anonymousreply 9November 13, 2023 9:34 PM

The song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978.

by Anonymousreply 10November 13, 2023 9:51 PM

Which song, R10? Not Self Applause.

by Anonymousreply 11November 13, 2023 10:03 PM

Interesting tidbit I found on her wikipedia page:

"In 1983, a woman was arrested in Nashville, Tennessee for pretending to be Alicia Bridges during a country music convention. Bridges drove from her home in Atlanta to give evidence in the case. Bridges stated that she had been plagued by an impostor for five years."

by Anonymousreply 12November 13, 2023 10:06 PM

R12 That’s hilarious. Would love to know who the woman was

by Anonymousreply 13November 13, 2023 10:16 PM

At R8 Anita sounds a bit like Deniece Williams.

by Anonymousreply 14November 13, 2023 10:18 PM

There’s something Roger Daltrey in her delivery.

by Anonymousreply 15November 13, 2023 10:26 PM

[quote] At [R8] Anita sounds a bit like Deniece Williams.

I thought she sounded like Minnie Riperton, but not as accomplished.

by Anonymousreply 16November 13, 2023 10:34 PM

I hope you're kidding, OP, because that is probably THE worst song I've ever heard, even by B-side standards.

by Anonymousreply 17November 14, 2023 4:07 PM

When we saw Anita Ward on SOUL TRAIN, my mom and I both were focused on her jacked up teefuses.

[quote]Debbie Harry stole her look.

Debbie Harry already had her look for a few years before Alicia Bridges came on the scene.

by Anonymousreply 19November 14, 2023 11:21 PM

Apparently Ms. Bridges has more than one imposter.

Probably her most radio friendly tune for the early 80s (reminds me of Kim Wilde's "Kids In America") =

She was the most fabulous lesbian of the disco era.

I always thought 'I love the nightlife' was sung by a black woman when I heard it on the radio as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 26November 15, 2023 4:16 PM

R26 Me too!

by Anonymousreply 27November 15, 2023 4:20 PM

Pink stole her look.

by Anonymousreply 28November 15, 2023 4:30 PM

Cher could have sung this song.

by Anonymousreply 29November 15, 2023 4:43 PM

I was the Alicia Bridges imposter. Ask me anything.

by Anonymousreply 30February 14, 2024 11:39 AM

She can be excellent, but she's full of herself and she screams. She's also one like Jamie Lee Curtis, runs around uglied up with a chip on her shoulder about it, and she's gorgeous! She's not complicated, just a pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 31February 14, 2024 12:02 PM

Sorry I was talking about Alicia Keys^!! Kinda applied though

by Anonymousreply 32February 14, 2024 12:03 PM

R32 lol, it still applies!

by Anonymousreply 33February 14, 2024 2:58 PM

OP this is shit

by Anonymousreply 34April 12, 2024 12:23 AM

Honey Alicia Bridges put the "myn" in " Womyn". She did not need a mullet or a Subaru Forester!

by Anonymousreply 38March 28, 2025 10:13 PM

I loved Nitelife, but remember my first reaction to seeing Alicia as being “what’s wrong with her?” However, I’ve kept her near to my heart.

by Anonymousreply 39March 28, 2025 11:38 PM

A friend of mine (may he RIP) did drag - he was shy and scared and did Alicia's "I Love The Nightlife."

He did it with his eyes closed and ended up poking some queen in the eye (someone trying to tip him) because he wouldn't open his eyes as he gestured to the music.
