Christopher Reeve displays buff bod as he works out for ‘Superman’ in never-before-seen 1977 photos

Reeve, who died in 2004 at age 52, was 24 when he took on the famous mantle of Clark Kent and his red-cape wearing alter ego, in 1978’s “Superman.”

He’d go on to star in its three sequels: 1980’s “Superman II,” 1983’s “Superman III” and 1987’s “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.”

The photos were taken by photographer Eva Sereny, who died in 2021.

Fag.

by Anonymousreply 1January 27, 2024 3:54 AM

I used to wait on him and his older children when they were small. They were lovely kids and adored their dad who was always charming and polite.

I was cater waitering a charity event where Chris spoke, it was after his accident, when he was paralyzed and near the end of his life. It was so sad and shocking to see him again years after seeing him on the street or with his kids looking so happy. It depressed me and was so hard to shake. I didn't know him or anything, just quick exchanges through work interactions. I was sad but a little relieved upon his death. He was so helpless and unwell, I couldn't imagine living as he did for even a day. So sad.

by Anonymousreply 2January 27, 2024 6:09 AM

He was so beautiful. Still the best superhero casting ever.

by Anonymousreply 3January 27, 2024 6:18 AM

Agreed on both counts, R3. Beautiful man.

by Anonymousreply 4January 27, 2024 9:06 AM

Such an incredible tragedy, and then his wife dies a year or two later.

by Anonymousreply 5January 27, 2024 1:42 PM

The perfect Superman

by Anonymousreply 6January 27, 2024 1:57 PM

Christopher Reeve also plays Superman in The Remains Of The Day. A straightforward, wise American with moral authority over the bluster of outdated Victorian values.

It’s brilliant casting.

He helped a lot of people.

I like to think he's in a heavenly great beyond now. Somewhere souls on this teeny blue ball floating in the vastness of space only see when they depart.

by Anonymousreply 8January 27, 2024 2:15 PM

Seriously, has there ever been a more gorgeous human being?

by Anonymousreply 9January 27, 2024 2:28 PM

He was so beautiful that he seems otherworldly, like not quite human, which made his casting as a Kryptonian perfect.

by Anonymousreply 10January 27, 2024 2:29 PM

Totally gorgeous ! I encourage all similar photos of him to be found and posted .

by Anonymousreply 11January 27, 2024 2:34 PM

I’d forgotten that he was in Remains of the Day! I haven’t seen it since I saw it when it came out.

His son Will is also gorgeous.

6’ 4” is too tall to be jumping, he should not have been.

by Anonymousreply 13January 27, 2024 2:47 PM

Who’s had him?

by Anonymousreply 14January 27, 2024 3:19 PM

The photos are encouraging. To exercise more. A beautiful body does not happen without work.

by Anonymousreply 15January 27, 2024 3:43 PM

R9 his lips could have been better and his nose wasn’t perfect but still a beautiful man

by Anonymousreply 16January 27, 2024 4:01 PM

Loved him as Capt. Pike

Yes r13 and top heavy by then. He flew over that horse's head! But rip Superman!

by Anonymousreply 18January 27, 2024 4:15 PM

When he was on the soap “Love of Life” in the mid-1970s, he had a pronounced lisp.

by Anonymousreply 19January 27, 2024 4:47 PM

He looks like he built that muscle the right way and not using steroids.

by Anonymousreply 20January 27, 2024 4:51 PM

Absolutely beautiful man. And his well-muscled toned body c. 1977 is infinitely more desirable than the overly steroid-enhanced muscled bodies in many a gym today!

by Anonymousreply 21January 27, 2024 4:53 PM

I really miss him.

He was a handsome upper class East Coast WASP through and through. He had a love of flying planes, horses, sailing, classical music, literature, and the Vermont countryside.

But above all else, he was an incredible human being who never made anyone feel insecure or uncomfortable. He had many friends, from Katharine Hepburn to Van Cliburn to Patrick Leahy.

by Anonymousreply 22January 27, 2024 4:59 PM

Gorgeous, gorgeous man.

by Anonymousreply 23January 27, 2024 5:30 PM

There is a documentary coming out about him this year called Super/man. His kids approve of it. I think it mostly centers on his life after the accident.

by Anonymousreply 24January 29, 2024 12:10 AM

R16 I rather think his nose is what tips him from handsome to beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 25January 29, 2024 12:43 AM

A near teenage Reeve on some soap was so beautiful. Not that he wasn't during Superman but when he was on that soap.....

Christopher Reeve on Desert Island Discs.

Good musical choices: Bach, Rachmaninov, Mozart, Debussy, Carly Simon, John Lennon, and Beethoven.

You know it’s bad when tabloids find today’s so-called celebrities so boring that they have to report on the dead.

by Anonymousreply 28January 29, 2024 1:22 AM

So incredibly handsome

by Anonymousreply 29January 29, 2024 1:22 AM

I am also stuck in the past r28

by Anonymousreply 30January 29, 2024 1:23 AM

Christopher Reeve had more class and sophistication in his pinky than any Hollywood celebrity today.

by Anonymousreply 31January 29, 2024 1:25 AM

He was privileged, but had such elegance, grace, and manners. The Hollywood men that followed him were either midgets (Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson) , looked like trailer trash (Brad Pitt, Austin Butler), or just middle of the road Joes (Matt Damon, Tom Hanks, Ryan Reynolds). Reeve was majestically handsome without being intimidating.

by Anonymousreply 32January 29, 2024 1:32 AM

I dunno. Reeves had a waspy and unapproachable look.

by Anonymousreply 33January 29, 2024 1:34 AM

Reeves was very waspy. He also comes across as very nice in all his interviews. Not like a Winklevoss twin.

by Anonymousreply 34January 29, 2024 2:08 AM

He died at only 52?

I guess I'm getting to that age where I'm going to be having this reaction more and more

by Anonymousreply 35January 29, 2024 2:14 AM

He was incredibly handsome. That smile.🫠

by Anonymousreply 36January 29, 2024 2:25 AM

And Margot Kidder and later Muriel Hemingway were the perfect foil.

by Anonymousreply 37January 29, 2024 2:31 AM

Cue the you're all so old gramps troll.

by Anonymousreply 38January 29, 2024 2:43 AM

Despite all those Superman movies Reeve was not trapped by the role and was able to vanish into other roles.

by Anonymousreply 39January 29, 2024 2:46 AM

I think I saw Superman about 3 times back then. Just a perfect movie: casting, special effects, script, music, comedy...

The Daily Mail has an article today on his "lookalike" son Matthew (if they say so).

Handsome, but never sexy. In anything.

by Anonymousreply 42January 29, 2024 3:14 AM

Some years back, Matthew was running in marathons to raise money for the Christopher and Reeve Foundation. I applaud the kids for their continued support and some of the work toward spinal cord injury research and disability advocacy.

by Anonymousreply 43January 29, 2024 3:17 AM

I wrote this before but I'll write this again. I used to work near to Times Square years ago. And I would go home via Port Authority. I would walk by the Broadhurst just as A Matter of Gravity was letting out. I would wait with the crowd at the stage door for the great Hepburn to walk out to her limo. I would always watch Reeve come out avoiding the crowd walking against the side of the building thinking how handsome he was. He was completely ignored. He didn't mean a thing to people at that point.

by Anonymousreply 44January 29, 2024 9:01 AM

R44, He had been on “Love of Life” for two years by then.

by Anonymousreply 45January 29, 2024 10:01 AM

My family and I got to meet him before a performance of "Fifth Of July" on Broadway one day. He was so warm, funny and friendly. When my Mom, told him how much she loved his latest film "Somewhere in Time" and how she wanted to go to Mackinac Island, he grabbed all 5'2' of her and gave her a big hug. The only time I ever saw my Mom almost swoon. He was a movie star. I still have the windowcard (poster) of his show he signed. Alas they are both gone now and she never did get to go to Mackinac.

by Anonymousreply 46January 29, 2024 10:23 AM

Very handsome man, and beautiful looking children.

by Anonymousreply 47January 29, 2024 10:33 AM

After viewing a rough cut of the documentary, his three children requested that the filmmakers delve deeper into certain areas of their father’s life.

Does that mean Chris’ rumored bisexuality will be addressed?

by Anonymousreply 48January 29, 2024 12:10 PM

He looks like he would stop you dead in your tracks if you saw him irl. Otherworldly

by Anonymousreply 49January 29, 2024 12:19 PM

Christopher Reeve WAS Superman. Not sexy but beautiful and imposing. Never heard anyone say a bad word about him. Very sad sequence of events with the Reeve family. Many tragedies.

by Anonymousreply 50January 29, 2024 1:44 PM

He looks older than 24 in the first Superman movie. This isn't a bad thing.

by Anonymousreply 51January 29, 2024 2:52 PM

His body looks a hundred times better than today's roided-out freak superhero "actors."

by Anonymousreply 52January 29, 2024 3:03 PM

No one better.

That is a bizarre way to characterize the part he played in "The Remains of the Day." Lord Darlington is incredibly naive and lobbies for the UK to appease Nazi Germany in the 1930s.

by Anonymousreply 54January 29, 2024 5:04 PM

I hate to rain on this love fest, but he was not the greatest screen actor--he gave some awkward performances, such as in "The Bostonians," where he just did not seem up to the level of the material.

That was James Fox, you freaking dumbass. Chris Reeve played the American.

There were actual gasps at the kissing scene in “Deathtrap” when I saw it in a cinema.

Cool, now do Brando, and DeNiro and Pacino who all gave awkward performances through the years.
