Had a wonderful encounter with him with my family when was I younger. It was right after "Superman" was a huge success. He was in previews in a new Broadway play "Fifth Of July". I had just bought the windowcard (poster) of the show. We were waiting for him at the stage door, just us. Up he walks and takes one look at the window card I'm holding and he becomes a little kid. "Oh my God, where did you get that?!" It was his first Broadway starring role and his first windowcard, hadn't seen one yet and he was thrilled. I tried to explain where I bought it, a few blocks away but he insisted we show him, so off we go chatting up 8th Ave from 43rd St to 45th ST to a poster shop called Triton. We had to go right back because he was going to work and I don't know if he ever went back and got one, but it was cool experience. He was charming, funny and my Mom was forever smitten. I still have the framed poster hanging.

Met him once, at a matinee of "As Is," in which a friend from the cast of his production of "Fifth of July" was appearing. The matinee was for mostly subscription members of Circle Rep in Sheridan Square. Reeve and I were about the youngest people there. I complimented him on his performance in "Somewhere in Time, " which had flopped theatrically, but became a cult hit when shown on HBO. He was gracious and friendly. I had heard that he had been "seen" occasionally in various gay bars on the Upper West Side, and he did seem to ping, but there was no cruising on his part. We conversed again after the play, then went our separate ways. I checked out the bar Ty's, where I casually knew one of the bartenders, Doric Wilson, a playwright in his own right. On my way back to Sheridan Square, I saw Reeve again. We talked a bit, then again went our separate ways. Curiously, as I watched him go, he turned around and looked back at me. But not for long.
Wistful moment.
I always thought a lot of his career choices were canny. He did a lot of theatre up at Williamstown, and elsewhere. I'd have loved to see a London revival of a play based on Henry James' story, "The Aspern Papers," which Reeve did with Wendy Hiller and Vanessa Redgrave. That would have been something. He had courage, to appear with those two powerhouses.

I worked with Chris Reeve in the early 80s. I didn't know him well but really can't imagine any kind of gay rumors being true based on what I saw. He was a kind and thoughtful young man back then, overwhelmed by his own fame and very aware of his limitations as an actor but very eager to learn and improve. Very sad how it all ended.

R28 I remember that like it was yesterday. I think he was telling the truth too. He was like a complete freak of nature, and knowing how jaded celebs are, always seeking something they haven't had or done, it seemed reasonable to me that CR might have wanted a go at that 15" dong. Not necessarily for actual anal insertion, if that's even possible, but just the novelty of some oral and dick worship play.

[quote]Why did they choose Michael Caine for the Deathtrap movie?
I'm thinking maybe one reason Caine got the role is that they had trouble finding an American actor who would do the male-male kiss on screen, which is VERY different from doing it on stage. I can't imagine Robert Reed or Farley Granger, or even Stacy Keach or John Cullum, being willing to do that in those days.
Obviously, Chris Reeve was willing to do it, but I've always thought that was exceptionally brave of him. I'll never forget seeing the movie in a theater in a small town. When the guys kissed, there was pandemonium and palpable disgust n the audience, so much so that it scared me.

I was a brand new RN working the ER in LA in 1983 and a young guy (18-19) came in claiming he'd been raped by Cristopher Reeve. Something had happened to the guy, he'd obviously been raped and beat up but the cops didn't want to deal with him and acted like they didn't believe men could get raped. I've always hoped that the guy was confused, or the guy who raped him looked enough like Reeve that he was believed. Probably about 15 years ago someone posted here that Reeve had raped a woman they knew.

Why are you so sure it's "bullshit?" It's possible that the masseur who told me the story was just making it up, but he seemed sincere. Also, it just came up in conversation, and the fact that Reeve was the celebrity he happened to mention made it seem like the truth. I mean, he could have picked any hot guy to tell the story about, but he said it was Reeve. And P.S., the masseur did not say that Reeve "had sex with him." 3) Bask in the unhinged crazy. It's quite mesmerizing when distilled into one string of uninterrupted mental illness.
4) Remind yourself that this thread is about that handsome guy who played Superman 30+ years ago and then became paralyzed from a riding accent and eventually died a while back, and not some wildly controversial or inflammatory subject.

Are you fucking kidding? Why should people make all that up? Because people are SHITS, that's why. It's fun to spread lies and sleazy stories about a celebrity who's dead and can't defend himself. And profitable, too. Salacious, unsubstantiated tales sell books; just ask Scotty Bowers. You believe a guy on Howard Stern? You believe "first-hand" stories on DATALOUNGE? Boy, you'll believe anything!
by Anonymous | reply 91 | November 10, 2015 6:14 PM |
I know a lot of people here are saying he couldn't act, but I always thought the way he played Clark Kent and Superman was genius. He actually made you believe they were two separate people. He's the only actor who played the role who did that. George Reeves was great, but his Superman and Clark were exactly the same. The same thing with Cavill. Routh tried to imitate Reeve, and he was okay, but not great. Perhaps Christopher wasn't great in other roles, but his Superman/Clark was magical. Without him in the part, the movie would have flopped. I mean, the producers were interested in Sly Stallone, Robert Redford and Burt Reynolds for the part!
by Anonymous | reply 92 | November 10, 2015 7:51 PM |
I was just reading Henry James' The Bostonians (I know, Mary!) and was surprised to see that Reeve was perfectly physically cast in the film. I've never seen the film....just looked it up out of curiosity for who played the various roles.
Is it a good film? Has anyone seen it? It also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Jessica Tandy and Linda Hunt.
Reeve obviously tried very hard to avoid doing schlocky commercial action films besides the Superman series. Not sure if that was ultimately a wise career decision but it seemed admirable at the time.

Seriously, R89, what is your problem? I'm not saying I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was sexual activity between Reeve and the masseur just because the masseur told me so, but why the hell do you find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe that could be true? And why am I "VERY naïve" to believe it might be true?
P.S. Have you never heard of the Kinsey scale? Whether Reeve was 90 percent gay, or 40 percent gay, or 10 percent gay or 3 percent gay, I would really like to know why you can't conceive of the possibility that he would let a male masseur give him a happy ending, either manually or orally. Please enlighten us. Go.

A male escort and winner of Howard Stern's BIG PENIS CONTEST...what a credible source!
I don't think Reeves was gay. There's no real evidence to suggest that he was, just unsubstantiated gossip. But he was a gorgeous actor, so of course there would be gay rumors about him. It goes with the territory. I'm sure there are people who WANT him to be gay. Several of them are on this thread. But that doesn't make it true.

I was really struck by how well-spoken, knowledgeable and intelligent he was -- particularly during the q&a session after his scripted talk, when he was speaking off the cuff fielding questions from professors and other academics. His son (his eldest, I think one who'd graduated from brown) seemed very kind and unassuming. Of course his condition wouldve brought even the most arrogant actor down to earth, but Somehow I got the distinct impression that Reeve had always been a kind-hearted, earnest person.

They said he looked to "faggy" to play Superman. They were right.

So many frauen on this thread and on DL in general.
Hey frauen, you're interlopers. This is a gay site and we're not interested in your thoughts on any subject.

Hey retard, anyone can post on this site. It's nondiscriminatory. I guess you're too stupid to realize that. And it's not "we", it's YOU. You don't represent the opinions of anyone except your own retarded self. And I think it can rightly be assumed that there is no person on this earth who would be "interested in your thoughts on any subject." You're an idiot. I think everyone who comes in contact with you tries to avoid you like the plague.

I read somewhere that Christopher was in a relationship with a guy prior to making it big. This guy was model and actor, too, and they lived together. The guy became a gay porn actor and later died (Not sure if it was AIDS) I believe he stated that Christopher was a "better top, than a bottom." or something along those lines, implying he didn't like to bottom. So, it's save to assume there was bi-curiousness in his DNA. But you couldn't be gay and be a movie star back then. Them's was the rules!
(Hey, it was the swinging seventies! Everyone was doin' it!)
I bet the only person who knew the truth was Robin Williams.

One of my all-time favorite hookups was in 1981/82 in DC. His name was Chuck, was a dead0n double-ringer for Christopher Reeves. Sexy, fun and I always looked forward to running into him. I never saw him after March 1982.
I’m certain it wasn’t Reeves. Obviously. But he looked so much like him, that I could indulge the fantasy.
I’ve never forgotten Chuck and Reeves was always a favorite, no matter what he was it.

Just sadness from a broken neck....I loved him with Michael Cane.

An actor by the name of Paul Satterfield is (was?) a dead ringer for Reeve.

R107 Casey Donovan was the porn actor who claimed to date Christopher, until Casey's burgeoning career started to become a liability and he couldn't be seen with a gay porn actor. I got some of the story right/ some of it wrong.
But basically someone wrote a book who claims that Casey stated he bedded Christopher, but the two passionate parties were both deceased when this revelation came to light. Soooo, kinda sorta maybe could be true?????.
