Even before that, though, the opening montage with Charlie does have a first day of term/school vibe, so I don't blame people for thinking S2 jumped from the end of the S1 school year to the beginning of a new one. Beginning of S3 should feel more seamless as a continuation of summer vaca. Pretty wild that S3 will basically end with summer vaca one year later, but I'm looking forward to it. Audiences will experience a tonal shift with Charlie's story, so things will already be more mature before they have sex.

To be fair I think it’ll be a tonal shift but also a very believable one. Like all of Trixie and Katya’s reaction this year was them shrieking in rage that they kept having horny makeouts and looking like they wanted to fuck and then chastely holding hands instead. R8 I can’t imagine how it’ll look. The heaviest make-out scene was 20 seconds long and they cropped it so we couldn’t see Charlie grinding on Nick. R210 I've seen people theorize that Ben was trying to make Nick jealous to the extent of dropping Charlie, so Ben could swoop in on Charlie again. Or just a very possessive "You took something of mine, now I take something of yours" thing, since he often treats Charlie as a thing instead of a person. I thought that was at least captured pretty well in the Nick conversation where Ben goes on and on about how Nick stole Charlie from him.

It's not the best writing but I did notice that Ben largely left Charlie alone in S2 as Charlie requested at the end of S1, which is why Ben started going off on Nick instead and trying to get into Nick's head about being just as bad as Ben. I feel like the only Bash moment I found genuinely impactful was his face after Ben sees Charlie slamming the door on Harry at the party, because you can tell right then and there that Charlie isn't going to be the type to easily forgive and forget and that Ben's attempt at an apology would need way more effort than Harry's.

I honestly think his apology just proved how unaware he was of the scars from his terrible treatment. Asking Charlie to acknowledge that Ben really liked him, when nearly at every turn, he told Charlie how unlikable and pathetic and desperate he was. It's pretty sad that the Paris dinner scene, when he asks Charlie how he's enjoying Paris, is probably the most kind he's ever been or the most interest he's ever shown in having a real conversation with Charlie. On some level, I think Ben knew he needed to be kind and attentive like Nick, but just kept reverting back to possessive and self-sabotaging behaviour because he couldn't deal with someone else stealing his toy that Ben was convinced only he would ever want or have.

But yeah, there are plenty of actors on this show capable of elevating writing that isn’t so complex and nuanced. It's definitely possible S2!Ben could have been better in different hands. Bash had to do a lot with stolen looks at Charlie or Nick and Charlie, like when he overhears about Nick giving Charlie a hickey, or just awkward little smiles on the bus or at the Louvre. Just based on things like YouTube reactions, they did their job of making the audience concerned that he could do something harmful, but not really enough to find him a deeply complex character. No one genuinely worried about a love triangle from what I saw, but did notice that Joe did great with showing his reactions to Ben without words. Or that Kit was great at showing Nick's concerns that staying closeted made him just like Ben. I remember one reactor initially worrying that Charlie started to feel ill at the Louvre because of hearing that Ben wanted to get back with him, something like "Don't tell me Charlie still has feelings for Ben", but they quickly realized that wasn't the reason.

I will say I am glad Alice didn't even attempt love triangle bullshit, since that's what a lot of weak writers fall back on. Instead it's more Ben knowing that he has a long way to go to be as confident and at peace with himself as Nick and Charlie, despite being the type of person to constantly chip away at their confidence out of his own lack of it. The apology scene had probably the best outcome of not instantly forgiving and absolving him, but showing some hope that he'll change in the future, just far away from Charlie. Like you can imagine he'll benefit from having a fresh start at whatever fictional school he's run off to for sixth form. I'd guess he won't be fully out until university, maybe, far from home. He'll probably get some mentions in S3, like in therapy, but I can't see most audiences missing him much.

The thing about Ben is that he's pretty much there to be a foil to other characters, Nick most of all. It's not being closeted or having homophobic parents that makes him a dick, it's how he treats other people. Charlie says it flat-out in the first episode, that being closeted isn't the problem, but how Ben has taken that pain and inflicted it so cruelly on Charlie when Charlie would have supported him through it. That's the big line in the sand separating him from someone like Nick, or even Darcy.

And I do like the spicier angle it adds to Nick. Ben's presence kind of gives Nick an extra edge where Nick himself can be a little possessive sometimes, but not in a way that harms or hurts Charlie. Kit does a great job at balancing that Nick is a) concerned about Ben hurting Charlie, but also b) a bit prone to jealousy over Ben/Charlie? Earliest example is after Clearest Blue when Charlie says he just ran into Ben at the party, and Kit manages to infuse "Ben?!" with not only worry that Charlie got hurt, but worry that something romantic happened between them just when Nick was feeling ready to make his own move on Charlie.

You get the same vibe in Paris when Ben implies that he's given Charlie a hickey somewhere more hidden than Charlie's neck, and Nick increasingly owns the idea that he gave Charlie the hickey, both to Harry's gang and teasing Charlie about it with pride and smugness. I don't know, I like it because it's still Nick being a pretty good guy, but showing some bite beyond being a perfectly sweet boyfriend. It's a little possessive of Charlie in a "Yeah, I did that, that's my boyfriend" way, which again is a foil to how Ben was possessive. Nick never quite enjoys the idea of Charlie being a dirty little secret, even when he's struggling with coming out. He really likes people knowing they're together. Kind of hates that people assume other boys are with Charlie.

These are black and brown female charas, and America is queer, so the essayist does point out that fanbases are more critical of anything that isn't white and straight. People are already critical of them before they even watch their media, and we've seen shades of that with the homophobia towards Joe.

The essay's main crit is about the MCU awkwardly inserting legacy characters into movies where they could be interchangeable with any other character. They don't get spotlight or character arcs that truly flesh them out. And most of them don't get to interact with their usual mentor character, instead being thrown into relationships that suit the plot of whatever movie they're starring in. It can feel capitalistic and shoehorned. They think these characters should have been integrated earlier in the MCU, even if they were just hinted at.

I think Joe as Wiccan will avoid a lot of these pitfalls since Agatha is directly connected to Wandavision, and a television series naturally has more time to spend on deeper character arcs. Even if Wiccan (probably?) doesn't get to interact with Wanda, the character of Agatha is still connected to Wanda and to Wiccan's origins. Joe seems really excited about the role and the story, so I have a good feeling.

It’s very possible that Kit’s Nick could be very different with a different Charlie but at a minimum it would be at least a somewhat perceivably different performance. Obviously the character in Recipe for Love is different but I’m interested to see what the romantic quirks are he gives him.
