I live near Boston, R33 and in November two winters back I bought a new snowblower. I have yet to use it. I've hardly needed a shovel. Less than 10 years ago (2015 - 2016) there was so much snow it was still melting in June, so winter can still blast us, but the extreme snowy and cold winters have missed us lately

by Anonymousreply 35January 1, 2024 10:46 PM

I have a friend who told me recently that due to her living circumstances ( she lives with and cares for her overbearing mother- she is in her early 40s, her mother in her early 70s. Her mother is not ill just retired and gambles a lot) this is a girl I went to high-school and collge with who was/ is brilliant , top of the class, but currently in between jobs due to being laid off. She feels obliged to stay home and take care of her mother financially . She is a lesbian and though her mother is aware of it she doesn't accept. Poor girl I feel for her. I invited her NYEve party last night and she declined. When I called to ask her why earlier today she said her mother gets upset when she goes out to hang with friends. This girl is in her 40s! . I call her girl because I knew her since we were kids. The point is I don't know what to make of what she told me regarding the afterlife.

The hospital called, offering me a time slot for a CT scan this Sunday at 10 am instead of late February. She promised I'd be in and out in 20 or 30 minutes: "Sundays are slow."

I said, "Sure." It's not urgent: I used to smoke, haven't for over 20 years, my PCP wants a baseline lung scan, and I'd just as soon get it done. Now I see the weekend forecast: the first significant snow of the season is on tap for Sunday. I wonder if someone else saw the weather report before me and cancelled their Sunday at 10 am appointment.

I'm not whelmed enough either way to do anything about it, though.

by Anonymousreply 78January 5, 2024 5:01 AM

Update: Local guy now says 6-12 inches.

by Anonymousreply 79January 5, 2024 10:32 AM

I put a fresh container of baking soda in the fridge.

by Anonymousreply 80January 5, 2024 12:25 PM

R79 Local guy here says 1 to 3 inches of rain and snow, the dreaded "wintry mix" along the coast.

Which is better than the "Up to 18 inches" they were leading with earlier this week.

by Anonymousreply 81January 5, 2024 12:30 PM

I can’t see how baking soda “absorbs odors.”

by Anonymousreply 82January 5, 2024 1:15 PM

[quote]But many of the smells encountered in the fridge are due to volatile fatty acids. For example, when butter goes rancid, it releases butyric acid, a particularly foul smell. As everyone knows, acids can be neutralized by bases. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a base. It reacts with butyric acid to form sodium butyrate which has no smell because it is not volatile.

R81, I lived on the east coast in 2010 when we actually GOT 18 inches of snow (they were predicting 36 inches which is insane). It totally stopped everything. 18 inches becomes like 4 foot snow drifts. We left our car parked on the street and after about 2 weeks decided we needed to at least start the car so the battery didn’t die. We couldn’t remember exactly where we parked so we dug out three cars before we found ours.

And the snow got packed so hard on the roads even though they were supposed to be closed, and it was so cold there was no chance of it melting or of them plowing it. They came in with dump trucks and bulldozers and were jackhammering the packed ice and putting it in trucks and driving it to and dumping it in Maryland.

That was the most miserable 3 weeks ever.

Good luck.

by Anonymousreply 84January 5, 2024 1:22 PM

We’re supposed to get 3-6, but then it will be above freezing, so while my neighbors are digging out their driveways, my cat and I will be inside, laughing and laughing.

by Anonymousreply 107January 6, 2024 2:44 PM

R107, but then you'd have to be Mariah Carey, R107.

by Anonymousreply 108January 6, 2024 2:46 PM

I'm sure Mariah Carey is sooooo concerned what a bunch of gay men think of her. Meanwhile, she's laughing all the way to the bank carrying suitcases of cash.

by Anonymousreply 109January 6, 2024 2:48 PM

I am fairly certain she has plenty of underlings to carry those suitcases for her.

by Anonymousreply 110January 6, 2024 2:51 PM

I bought some mega stuffed Oreos last night and I don't think I like them. The cream filling just tastes weird or maybe the ratios are cuz I'm not used to that much but it's got like a weird texture too. I do however love the peanut butter Oreo still then maybe I'll go see if I can get some of those today.

by Anonymousreply 111January 6, 2024 2:55 PM

There were no Campari tomatoes at the three grocery stores I went to this morning. I will not eat grape tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 112January 6, 2024 3:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 122January 6, 2024 7:32 PM

After returning from a trip to my home state for Christmas, I started feeling sick and thought that I might have caught Covid from the crowded airports and crowded flights. All my home Covid tests were months past their expiration dates, so I didn't trust the results, but I got a definite positive from one. I've been vaxxed and booster and had Covid once before. I started feeling better after a few days, but I still don't know whether I had Covid.

by Anonymousreply 130January 6, 2024 9:27 PM

Yesterday, the snow amount prediction in my area was 6 to 12 inches. It's now been changed to 8 to 14. The winter storm warning is in effect from 7:00 PM tonight until 7:00 PM tomorrow night. Goodbye, bare ground.

by Anonymousreply 135January 7, 2024 11:18 AM

Well, how many inches did you bitches get? It looks like we got around eight but it's not finished snowing yet.

by Anonymousreply 136January 7, 2024 2:58 PM

About six so far but it's going to keep snowing until this evening.

Slush. No inches.

by Anonymousreply 140January 7, 2024 3:40 PM

My inches look very slushy, which means they are going to be heavy. Maybe I’ll just wait for them to melt.

I gave my dog a tiny bit of my loaded potato and now he’s grooming

by Anonymousreply 142January 7, 2024 4:13 PM

Catchy Comedy (formerly Decades) is showing a weekend marathon of "Love, American Style." Now there's a show that has aged like milk. Rather like "Laugh-In" in that regard. Lots of fun guest stars, though. The same people who would be populatitng "The Love Boat" a few years down the road. I watched one with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as newlyweds who can't consummate their marriage because they're stuck inside a tuba on their wedding night.

by Anonymousreply 143January 7, 2024 6:14 PM

Love, American Style always sucked.

Yeah, Love American Style was always stupid.

by Anonymousreply 145January 7, 2024 6:37 PM

My dog is restless since it's snowing and she doesn't like to get her head wet so she's inside.

by Anonymousreply 146January 7, 2024 6:43 PM

R146 my dachshund hates snow because of his short legs. He just sinks in it. I have to shovel or sweep a place for him to pee and poop.

by Anonymousreply 147January 7, 2024 6:51 PM

Many of the "Love, American Style" sketches are just bizarre. One featured the Lennon Sisters(!) One of them is getting married, and George Furth, who wrote the book for "Company" and couldn't have been a bigger queen if he had tried, disrupts the wedding because he's madly in love with the bride. Frankie and Annette and the tuba was a more plausible scenario.

by Anonymousreply 148January 7, 2024 6:56 PM

I'm surprised my plow guy is here already doing my driveway. It's still snowing heavy so he'll probably have to return later.

by Anonymousreply 149January 7, 2024 6:58 PM

Is 'plow guy' a euphemism for fuck buddy, R149?

by Anonymousreply 150January 7, 2024 7:01 PM

[quote]Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello as newlyweds who can't consummate their marriage because they're stuck inside a tuba on their wedding night.

I am fucking an old guy. I really like a geriatric lay. Who knew?

by Anonymousreply 155January 7, 2024 11:36 PM

And that means a young guy will fuck you when you are older. My guy would remove dentures to suck me offf and it was a bad bj. But it was worth the story.

by Anonymousreply 156January 8, 2024 1:12 AM

My old lay is very pleasant and I am enjoying it.

by Anonymousreply 157January 8, 2024 1:49 AM

I have to shovel nearly a foot of snow to get out of my house tomorrow. The good news is that it's light and powdery. The bad news is that I have to shovel.

by Anonymousreply 158January 8, 2024 3:59 AM

I made a chicken stew with cornish hens, frozen vegetables, and better than bouilllon.

It is good, but I have to eat it for two days, because it takes up too much space in my tiny fridge.

I hate processing chicken.

by Anonymousreply 159January 8, 2024 1:05 PM

I'm in a pissy mood.

by Anonymousreply 160January 8, 2024 3:07 PM

Welcome to DL, R160.

You've found a home!

by Anonymousreply 161January 8, 2024 3:42 PM

And a pot to piss in!

by Anonymousreply 162January 8, 2024 3:44 PM

Just don’t be a mincing prisspot.

by Anonymousreply 163January 8, 2024 5:11 PM

Datalounge may be a home for r160, but not necessarily this thread. Try not to whelm.

by Anonymousreply 165January 8, 2024 5:36 PM

Pissy is often underwhelming.

Some bolts have shoulders. I never knew that until today.

by Anonymousreply 167January 8, 2024 7:07 PM

I cleaned the filter on my dishwasher. Ew.

by Anonymousreply 168January 8, 2024 7:29 PM

The news keeps talking about another “winter storm” in NNJ tomorrow, but it’s all rain. A storm happening in the winter is not a “winter storm.” A “winter storm” has at least ice.

by Anonymousreply 169January 8, 2024 7:31 PM

I have a cold.

by Anonymousreply 170January 8, 2024 8:42 PM

Had a Chef Ramsay frozen meal for lunch. Shepherd's Pie. Do not recommend. The audacity of the guy to put out such rubbish.

I got two other frozen meals, a pulled pork with mac and cheese by Andrew Zimmern and a Chicken Alfredo by some chef I never heard of named Kardea Brown. I'll report back with my findings later in the week.

by Anonymousreply 171January 9, 2024 3:30 PM

I parboiled potatoes for later.

by Anonymousreply 172January 9, 2024 3:34 PM

I'm making tomato sauce today.

by Anonymousreply 173January 9, 2024 3:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 174January 9, 2024 4:04 PM

It's raining out again, so I'm making beef stew in the slow cooker.

R124, try the Extra Toasty Cheez-Itz. They are quite yummy!

We had a beautiful snowy day on Saturday. Now it's raining and ugly outside.

by Anonymousreply 176January 9, 2024 6:25 PM

For some unknown reason, HBO has chosen to show all 6 seasons of The Sopranos this week. I'm currently watching Season 5. I'd forgotten how much I missed this show. Also had no idea that Lawrence Taylor and David Lee Roth had cameos at poker games and Frankie Valli was even in a scene.

Between hearing the Succession theme song at the GGs and now the theme song of The Sopranos, I'm enjoying this little trip down Memory Lane.

by Anonymousreply 177January 9, 2024 8:41 PM

James Gandolfini was perfectly cast as Tony Soprano. He scared the shit out of me.

by Anonymousreply 178January 9, 2024 9:03 PM

When I shop at The Fresh Market I am extra nice to the employees there. It is consistently voted the worst place to work. I would like to boycott it altogether but there are a few items there I do like. I don't shop there often, maybe once a month if even that.

by Anonymousreply 179January 9, 2024 9:41 PM

The heavy rain is approaching the northeast and it will fall on a lot of snow. The puddles will be the size of size of swimming pools!

by Anonymousreply 180January 9, 2024 9:47 PM

It’s snowing hamster sized flakes! My dachshund isn’t happy about it, he hates going out to take a 10 second pee in this weather.

by Anonymousreply 181January 9, 2024 9:52 PM

The little cat always meows to announce he is having a drink of water.

by Anonymousreply 182January 9, 2024 10:52 PM

I only like the Sopranos beginning with Season 3. In Seasons 1 and 2, Tony looks like George Costanza.

by Anonymousreply 183January 9, 2024 11:10 PM

I tried watching Sopranos but only made it 4 episodes.

by Anonymousreply 184January 9, 2024 11:29 PM

Which season, R184? Like I said, Seasons 1 and 2 aren't very good. Season 3 is where to start.

Season 4, some people don't like. This is the season where Carmela fell in love with Furio. I found this season to be hilarious because of that. She was always primping in the oven door when Furio knocked on the door to pick up Tony. Offering Furio coffee and pastries.

by Anonymousreply 185January 10, 2024 12:22 AM

I started with S1E1. But your description of the oven primping sounds hilarious. I will probably give it another shot.

by Anonymousreply 186January 10, 2024 12:29 AM

The rain is making big chunks of snow fall off things and it's scaring the cat. And me too, to be fair.

by Anonymousreply 191January 10, 2024 8:32 AM

r188, there's something called Amazon Vine. Not 100% sure of the details, but the gist of it is, based on the number of reviews you give, Amazon will "invite" you to join Vine. Apparently, once you're a Vine member you get a lot of free shit from Amazon, but you have to review those items.

I'm a bit sketchy on the details, but a friend of mine was invited to Amazon Vine and he and his wife get A LOT of free shit! Research it, if it's something that is of interest to you.

by Anonymousreply 192January 10, 2024 10:54 AM

Just found out that today is the 25 year anniversary of the premiere of The Sopranos so that's why HBO has beens showing it. I'm afraid to watch the final episode as I may experience PTSD from the memories of watching it in real time. I remember yelling WHAT THE FUCK??!! at my TV when the screen went black. My cable company is shit and I was sure it was them.

R189, glad you are wiping out the dreadful taste of the extra cheese Cheez-Itz.

by Anonymousreply 193January 10, 2024 1:08 PM

Just watch Seasons 3, 4, and 5 (Sopranos). In addition to not liking Seasons 1 and 2, I don't gravitate that much to Season 6. I love the Lake House episode where Tony and Bobby brawl, though. There's a "compulsive gambling" episode that's really stupid.

by Anonymousreply 194January 10, 2024 2:22 PM

Is it ever sunny in Japan? I watch a lot of youtube videos about life in Japan and it always looks gloomy and overcast.

by Anonymousreply 195January 10, 2024 6:17 PM

I ate a cheeseburger with 2 bread n butter pickles and sweet baby rays bbq sauce

by Anonymousreply 196January 10, 2024 10:13 PM

That sounds delish, R196.

by Anonymousreply 197January 10, 2024 11:30 PM

The rain and wind kept me up all night - it sounded like bullets on the skylight and a hurricane pounding against the walls. I didn’t have breakfast because I sat in the dentist’s chair from 9:30 to 3:15 while he took a 20 minute break for lunch, and while my provisional bridges are now better supported, my back and especially my neck are killing me. Driving home, exhausted if not all that sore from what he did, the traffic was awful. I’m guessing everyone who stayed home yesterday because of the weather came out to drive today.

When I got home at 4, I opened a bottle of water and poured myself a glass to take two pills I usually take around 2 pm. About five minutes later I vomitted them up. That never happens. I was grateful to be close to the sink in the kitchen when it happened because having to clean up puke anywhere else would have been the cherry on the cake of my day. All the same, I’m not overwhelmed. I’m going to bed at 7:52 pm just so nothing else, good or bad, can happen to me tonight.

The plumber (grandson of the first plumber we had when we bought the house) is coming at 8 am to replace a faucet. Tomorrow’s another day. Maybe he’ll be cute. I trust Thursday will be less stressful and perfectly underwhelming. I’ll do plant care, which usually is.

by Anonymousreply 198January 10, 2024 11:51 PM

All seasons of The Sopranos are worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 199January 11, 2024 12:00 AM

by Anonymousreply 200January 11, 2024 12:40 AM

Every now and then I think of my grandpa who died in 1996. I hope he is happy somewhere. I love you Papa!

by Anonymousreply 201January 11, 2024 2:01 AM

I think my maternal grandpa died in 1996, also.

by Anonymousreply 202January 11, 2024 2:50 AM

I have been highly unproductive all week both professionally and personally.

by Anonymousreply 203January 11, 2024 12:21 PM

Might be a bit whelming but there’s possibly a foot of snow in Chicago tomorrow. Thankfully, I’ll likely call in sick.

by Anonymousreply 204January 11, 2024 12:34 PM

The plumber's grandson came to replace the faucet (but at 10:30, not 8 am) and was not only not hot, he was too fat to fit under the sink so his skinny 20-year-old helper did all the work. He also said his grandfather is who spoke to me when I'd called to set up the appointment and he got my name, address, and the time of the appointment wrong. If I hadn't called to see where they were, they'd have never showed up. In his defense, he must be 90 or so - he was in his 60's 25 years ago. The grandson said they want him to retire but he won't. But we have a kitchen sink faucet that doesn't drip now. And I got a great night's sleep last night to offset the night before.

But jeez, he was the not hottest service/repair person we've ever had here. In that sense I was very underwhelmed.

by Anonymousreply 205January 11, 2024 4:31 PM

90's alternative music was really something

by Anonymousreply 206January 11, 2024 7:54 PM

Was the helper hot?

by Anonymousreply 207January 11, 2024 7:58 PM

What's the point of it all?

by Anonymousreply 208January 11, 2024 9:55 PM

If a skinny Okie with a wispy beard dressed grunge is your idea of hot, well, yes, I guess, R207.

If you're me, he was not. He was at least quiet. Fattie did all the taking while the kid did all the work.

by Anonymousreply 209January 11, 2024 9:58 PM

R206 update your listening preferences please

by Anonymousreply 210January 11, 2024 9:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 211January 11, 2024 11:28 PM

What is so likeable about those 2?

by Anonymousreply 212January 12, 2024 1:28 AM

I’m making a recipe for disaster; I’m doing two loads of wash that will require ironing afterwards and I’m also polishing twelve pair of shoes.

I’m going to stain something.

R212, they show that love knows no race, colour or religion

by Anonymousreply 214January 12, 2024 1:46 AM

Do they have different religions? Good-looking black man with good-looking white woman doesn't sound particularly boundary-busting, IMO. I think you're reading a lot into this relationship. Just seemed like two super-horny people who left their "boring" spouses for each other.

I like dark chocolate covered Peppermint Joe Joe cookies from Trader Joe’s at Christmas. But I was too late this year. All the Trader Joe’s stuff I normally buy at Christmas was gone. (I live 90 minutes from the nearest TJs). There’s an Aldi near me and they had Benton’s Fudge-Covered Peppermint Cremes. Turns out they are an exact dupe of the Dark Chocolate peppermint Joe Joe’s.

But you know how Aldi is. Once they sell out of something, that’s it. You might see it a year later. You might never see it again. Every year I look for the amazing telescoping wand I bought a few years ago that is the only long lasting garden hose wand I’ve ever bought. Alas….it was never to be seen again

by Anonymousreply 225January 12, 2024 8:50 PM

Aldi's Fudge Covered Peppermint Cremes are delicious and really are the same as TJ's. I always stock up on Aldi's version around the holidays.

This couple says the Aldi version is better because of the chocolate.

I just got off the phone with a customer service person and she could barely speak English. Why do companies hire people with thick foreign accents to speak ON THE PHONE? It's not helpful. I realize people need jobs but the hiring staff should be fired. There are other jobs.

Because the customer service representatives don't live in or work from the United States.

Not only did Whole Foods (365 brand) change the shape of the organic fusilli, they changed the recipe. The old fusilli had a nice, chewy (in a good way) texture. I will have to find a new brand of fusilli pasta.

The worst part is- I enjoyed them, thoroughly.

by Anonymousreply 238January 13, 2024 5:25 AM

I used to pack them on my hiking excursions in the White Mountains. Sitting on the peaks, they brought me back to life. Particularly on the knee crushing Watson Path up Mt Madison. Path, yeah, right.

by Anonymousreply 239January 13, 2024 5:55 AM

What are you wanting, as far as the egg done-ness? I'm assuming set white, runny yolk.

Are you cracking the shell or putting in an intact egg?

If you're cracking the shell, I'd put it in way towards the end.

[quote] I used to pack them on my hiking excursions in the White Mountains

Back in 1970s NH was very liberal and all the young people were long haired hippie, strictly organic types (there was even a commune with a fat Indian kid being worshipped). My friend was at art college in Franconia. One day we went into “town” and everyone was abuzz. “The railway on the mountain is closed because winds are 100 mph!”

Everyone seemed so hopped up by the news I got the impression it was a fairly important economic factor in the town. It was March or April —> mud season. Not much going on in mud season. I don’t know where I got the idea but I thought there was a lumber mill on the mountain and a lot of men worked there, cutting down trees, splitting logs, then sending the logs down the mountain on a railway. I thought, “Those poor guys. If they don’t work, they don’t get paid.”

Wasn’t til years later I found out it’s a tourist attraction.

Now all those hippies are preppers and Trumpers. They were so rigid in their beliefs about how people should be living their lives back them that it’s no surprise they turned into rightwingers. They probably have militias that worship Trump now instead of communes worshipping an obese teen guru )

by Anonymousreply 246January 13, 2024 3:56 PM

All the young people? No Republicans?

by Anonymousreply 247January 13, 2024 4:01 PM

I bought some “medium roast” coffee from Costco. Black as coal and too oily for my espresso grinder. Should have noticed it was made by “Starbucks”, purveyor of burnt coffee.

by Anonymousreply 248January 13, 2024 5:24 PM

R248, I think you just have to buy light roast. When I was a coffee drinker, I found that medium roast, generally, was still too much roasting.

by Anonymousreply 249January 13, 2024 5:53 PM

From Starbucks, yes. I get most of my coffee from a small importer/roaster and they roast each bean to what they consider its ideal level to show off what’s unique about the coffee. In every case, Starbucks would call their roasts “blonde.” However, they are very expensive, so I’m looking for an alternative.

by Anonymousreply 250January 13, 2024 5:57 PM

YouTube has created oldies playlists for me. I'm surprised at how many "love songs" are really songs about not wanting to be alone.

by Anonymousreply 251January 13, 2024 6:45 PM

I prefer dark roast.

by Anonymousreply 252January 13, 2024 7:59 PM

And I like hard boiled eggs.

by Anonymousreply 253January 13, 2024 8:00 PM

My coffee mill broke last and while awaiting its replacement, I bought some (shudder) ground coffee at the supermarket: Peet's Santo Domingo blend.

Which they say is a medium roast and I say it's dark. It's good, but it's dark.

by Anonymousreply 254January 13, 2024 11:05 PM

Old episodes of What's My Line remind me of how sad it was that Dorothy Kilgallen's husband threw her 15-year-old son out of the house after she died because he wasn't his biological son.

by Anonymousreply 255January 14, 2024 3:31 AM

That’s a depressing story.

by Anonymousreply 257January 14, 2024 5:39 AM

You made that up, R257. Your gassy humor is whelming and not welcome here.

by Anonymousreply 258January 14, 2024 7:30 AM

He made up a story about eating cabbage and farting? Where’s his Pulitzer?

by Anonymousreply 259January 14, 2024 12:42 PM

I love cabbage and thankfully it doesn’t make me farty. Spaghetti squash on the other hand makes me fart so much and so forcefully. I try to avoid it which is a shame.

by Anonymousreply 260January 14, 2024 1:00 PM

I just got a second alert extended to 4:00 PM. It's due to a cold front that will move through and temps are supposed to plunge and remain cold through next week. January sucks.

by Anonymousreply 271January 14, 2024 7:01 PM

Today I went for a walk. It was -10 outside.

I woke up just now to see snow on the ground in D.C. for the first time in two years.

My dinner was a small bowl of microwaved peas jazzed up with some butter and "good" parmigiano reggiano.

Had a conversation today with a relative who works in healthcare. Somehow the conversation got around to how every last human on earth has drank their own urine. Apparently, when in the womb, babies drink the amniotic fluid, pee it out, and then drink it again. So, every last one of us has drank our own urine at some point.

Sorry.

by Anonymousreply 280January 16, 2024 2:58 AM

There’s an inch of snow on the ground this morning. My neighbor Larry, aka “Leaf Man” (he’s retired and out there sweeping leaves off the driveway two or three times day all year long) was the source of the scraping sound that woke me at 5 am as he shoveled well before dawn’s early light this morning.

Nothing is permitted to remain on Larry’s driveway for long. Nothing. He needs to see every inch of pavement morning, noon, and now I guess at night, too.

Wow Bao frozen Chinese style BBQ Pork bao were surprisingly good. Microwave instructions were perfect. Recommend.

by Anonymousreply 282January 16, 2024 1:35 PM

They have some refrigerated bao at Costco that are good. Both times I’ve purchased them the cashiers complained about the cost. It works out to about a dollar per bun, which is kind of pricey for Costco.

by Anonymousreply 283January 16, 2024 1:39 PM

Hard to complain about bao.

You need to go longer than just one month. That's not what you wanted to hear, but your body needs more than a month to adjust.

When you drink alcohol, it satiates your carb cravings. Eventually, however, things would level out.

An asshole at work told us he had a bad cough. That was Tuesday. Wednesday, we had a company-wide meeting and some of us went to the office to watch as a group. Asshole walks into the closed door, cllosed window conference room WITHOUT A FUCKING MASK! He coughed almost constantly.

A couple hours later, he sent the team an email. He tested positive for COVID!! There were about 15 other people in the room. So he exposed us all.

by Anonymousreply 316January 19, 2024 5:25 PM

Cosmo, no-one had the sense to tell him to leave?

Or better yet, did anyone else vote with their feet, get up and leave the room while he was there?

by Anonymousreply 319January 19, 2024 6:55 PM

R317, no one would dare say anything because we are HR (ducking to avoid the shoe being thrown at my head). It was a company-wide meeting being shown on the big screen TV in the conference room so no, none of left.

R318, you are correct. Cosmo is the name of my wonderful, adorable, domestic short-haried cat. I love him more than most people in my life. It is for hm that I brave the local Shop Rite and Walmart because of his addiction to Fancy Feast Savory Centers.

by Anonymousreply 329January 21, 2024 3:02 AM

At work, I moved into a "new" office. The previous occupant had been in there for 15 years. I ended up cleaning it, myself. Staples all over the floor, hooked into the old, industrial carpet. Lots of dust. I got rid of a lot of the office furniture (2 tall metal file cabinets) that had been in there. The office is larger than I thought. All the furniture made it look smaller.

Anyway, I was upset about moving because I had just moved offices in October of 2023. My previous office was a mess, also, when I moved in. I had had to clean that office, as well.

I hope I don't have to move offices, again, any time soon.

by Anonymousreply 339January 21, 2024 3:15 PM

If you'll recall, I had foundation repairs done on my house last week. They put in steel piers both outside and inside to lift my slab back to level. The inside ones required breaking through the slab to create 2 ft. square holes to dig down 4 ft. to place the piers. Yes, very whelming, as it destroyed large sections of my tile floors. Sorry about that.

After lifting, the holes are filled with concrete, which takes over 24 hours to dry. So, of course, the first thing my dog did was walk through a couple. I fixed the one I knew about, but didn't notice the other until it was too late to smooth it over. So my dog's pawprints are now enshrined in my house. He seems pleased with himself.

I should have used a lighter hand with my olive oil or invested in a higher quality oil.

This is my third attempt at nicoise salad because it has all my favorites - olives, capers, tuna, egg, green beans, bullshit lettuce, and tomatoes. Plus, it was featured in “white chicks”. Can’t go wrong with that.

I will get this right.

by Anonymousreply 349January 22, 2024 1:00 AM

R349, not trying to be mean, but what's so hard about dressing your salad? What kind of olive oil are you using? Have you ever made salad dressing before?

by Anonymousreply 350January 22, 2024 1:20 AM

R350, I used kirkland, the ingredients were great, but I have an oily aftertaste that’s kind of off.

And I force myself to make salad dressing but it never compares to fake shelf-stable dressing. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

I need to buy better oil.

by Anonymousreply 351January 22, 2024 1:26 AM

How are you making your salad dressing? It should just be, mainly, oil and vinegar.

Also, a homemade oil & vinegar dressing should be way better than something like Wishbone ("fake shelf-stable").

If you have a jar with a cap, it should be really easy.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 352January 22, 2024 1:40 AM

For the nicoise you could try an oil and lemon or lime dressing too instead of vinegar. I rarely use store bought salad dressing. Only for Caesar salad. I make my own dressing every day.

by Anonymousreply 363January 23, 2024 3:05 AM

I like extra light olive oil for salad dressing. My go to recipe is Ina Garten’s vinaigrette. Olive oil, champagne vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic, salt, pepper. I usually skip the salt and add a few shakes of dried thyme. You can switch up the vinegars for a red wine or balsamic dressing. I whisk it all together in the measuring cup with a spout and pour it into a little jelly jar that holds three servings. It will last in the fridge for three days but you have to bring it to room temperature for about a half hour because the oil solidifies when it gets cold.

Although someone left a bottle of Bolthouse Farm green goddess dressing at my house and it’s pretty good. Only 35 calories per serving.

by Anonymousreply 364January 23, 2024 4:59 AM

I like balsamic vinegar and extra virgin cold pressed olive oil from California.

R406 I saw where a big bird had been walking in the snow. Wild turkey footprints.

They’re everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 411January 25, 2024 12:20 PM

I didn’t clear the back of my driveway after a recent snow, which was followed by several days of below-freezing temperatures so the snow persisted. It was covered in rabbit tracks which showed the rabbits have a regular route from my neighbors yard to mine with a stop at a little garden outside my fence. Very cute.

I came into the office like I usually do on Thursdays. Most of my coworkers live in central Jersey so, when our manager dosen't come in, they don't either. She had to visit another office that she's responsible for. I will get a few things done, leave around 2 pm and then go food shopping on my home.

by Anonymousreply 413January 25, 2024 2:47 PM

"Food" shopping instead of "grocery" shopping is so Jersey. I miss Jersey.

Nothing weird about saying food shopping. Lots of people also say they’re going to the food store instead of grocery store or supermarket.

by Anonymousreply 419January 25, 2024 5:20 PM

I say I’m going to Trader Joe’s.

by Anonymousreply 420January 25, 2024 5:33 PM

I don't say "food store," although I do say "food shopping."

by Anonymousreply 421January 25, 2024 5:43 PM

My North Jersey family said "going to the store," which we took to mean Grand Union or Shop Rite.

by Anonymousreply 422January 25, 2024 5:55 PM

[quote]"Food" shopping instead of "grocery" shopping is so Jersey. I miss Jersey.

I lived in New Jersey for 10 years. I mostly did my food shopping at ShopRite. January is when ShopRite has its Can Can Sale.

I ordered a bed quilt from LL Bean. It arrived and I opened the box to the smell of mold/mildew. I thought, “Maybe this box was stored in a basement before they put the quilt in and mailed it.” The quilt was in a zippered plastic case. I unzipped it about 1” and was nearly knocked off my feet by the smell of mold. Much stronger than the box.

How can they even send out something as disgusting as that? It should have a biohazard sticker on it. I have lung disease and am susceptible to airborne infection. What they sent me was practically germ fucking warfare.

by Anonymousreply 461January 27, 2024 10:58 PM

Be sure to write a strongly worded review on the Bean website, R461.

by Anonymousreply 462January 27, 2024 11:56 PM

You know R462 a couple of people in the reviews mentioned a bad smell. One person said s/he sent it back. Another person said, “I washed it and the smell went away.”

I’m not putting that toxic mess in my washing machine. I will definitely mention the “bad smell” but I’m going to be more specific about the nature of the smell. It’s biological, not chemical. It needs to be irradiated before putting it in a waste dump.

I just watched Dan Souza from ATK make Orecchiette with Sausage and Broccoli Rabe. I know how to make this pasta dish, I've been making it all my adult life, probably make it better than him, but I just like watching Dan.

Another guy named Keith something or other made Pasta with Cacio and Uova which I've never made but I'm pretty sure my nonna made when I was a kid. He used lard which I'm not sure my nonna used, maybe she did, I don't know.

I am going on a work trip, economy flights. One of the admin staff asked me whether I wanted window or aisle. I said aisle. She put me in the aisles, but close to the bathrooms on all legs. So, I changed my seat selection. I don't know if she did that on purpose (put me close to the bathrooms). Who knows. She's passive-aggressive, so maybe she did it on purpose.

Maybe, R472.

I had a bad experience on a flight where I was seated in the aisle, close to the bathroom. Also, the floor changed from carpet to linoleum with a bump barrier (between my seat and the bathroom area). The beverage cart kept going over that bump and I could not get to sleep.

Kerasal is awesome. Can’t believe people use cheese grater type things on their feet when all they need to do is rub a little salicylate ointment on your feet, cover with fluffy socks. Next day your feet are already improved and no flaky skin flying all over. Just throw your socks in the hamper and you’re grand.

But only the Kerasal intensive foot repair. *Not* the kerasal fungus cream.

Needed to take a dump so bad on my nightly (ten miles) jog today, but then I remembered all those DL threads about runners being absolute assholes, so I decided to hold it in until I got home. I refuse to become one of *those* long-distance runners, I just refuse.

It was an absolute heaven otherwise, what with the thick fog and the freezing cold and the dollface swans on my jogging path waking up to stare at me and judge me. I hate the fact that spring is slowly approaching because it means I'll be drenched in sweat yet again.

by Anonymousreply 504January 30, 2024 4:46 AM

It’s been rainy and dark here, with soft fog obscuring the mountains and islands, and so to stave off depression I’ve been letting my cat sleep with me, even though he always interrupts my sleep with his feline neediness. The police kept asking me about the "dead bodies" and I kept saying "they aren't dead bodies, they are mannequins" and I was walking around kicking them with my foot and saying "see, not dead bodies, just mannequins".

Anyone do dream interpretation? What does this mean?

by Anonymousreply 510January 30, 2024 2:23 PM

R509 mannequins, like statues, are human effigies. Is there a situation in your life where a group of people believes something that you see as fake, not what it seems? Could be corporate culture or some marketing scheme or CrossFit cult. You are pointing out that the mannequins are not real humans but others in authority think they are.

I had a nightmare …I kept waking up, falling back asleep into same nightmare.

Dreamed it was daytime but the moon was out. As I looked at the moon it started shaking and shivering and then it just shot off out of the sky and flew away. I got very scared because moon controls tides on earth and l live near ocean. Also, animals need tides to help them get to places where they reproduce.

I kept checking internet but nobody was addressing “What happened to the moon?” I kept waking up, falling asleep, looking out window and not seeing moon. I was saying to people, “Pay attention! The moon is gone! Look out the window! It’s not there anymore!” And they were laughing at me. “It’s daytime! That’s why there’s no moon!” But it got dark outside and I said, “Look! No moon!” And people said, “There are moonless nights, you know. Plus, it’s cloudy.”

It was so scary and frustrating. Now I know how Trump supporters feel, thinking something is really, really wrong and nobody cares.

by Anonymousreply 523January 31, 2024 4:24 PM

Me, too R519. I've been with Verizon Wireless forever. My first cell phone was with Verizon.

I ordered contact lens from this online place. The initial price was a little daunting ($600+) BUT they give a $220 rebate card that can be used anywhere. This works out great for me since I used my FSA money. But I wonder if this isn't a deceptive practice; giving a gift card that can be used for non-FSA items. When I would order them through my eye doctor, I would get a $75 Visa gift card but $220?? That's a lot of money.

by Anonymousreply 524January 31, 2024 6:05 PM

No Lucky Charms, R530?

by Anonymousreply 531February 1, 2024 8:04 AM

My insurance company is no longer paying for my CPAP machine which it has insisted I rent through a medical supplier. , Yesterday I got a bill from a third company which apparently manages home health equipment for the insurance company. They want me to pay $120 per month which will apply to my deductible.

Since I could buy a CPAP for around $800, I’m naturally not interested in paying $120 per month in perpetuity to rent one. I wanted to know how to get the purchase price applied to my deductible. I got bounced back and forth five times between customer service reps (with thick foreign accents) for the insurance company and the third company, each saying I needed to talk to the other.

Eventually, I decided to use the email help function at the third company to get the apparently unprecedented question to someone who could answer it. Today I got a response. I was impressed to hear from the so quickly. The response was encrypted which required me to go to a website and set up a password (which, of course, was rejected twice for being in the wrong format) and enter a one-time special code to read.

The message? Call the same customer service line that doesn’t know the answer.

by Anonymousreply 532February 1, 2024 2:14 PM

That would overwhelm me, r532.

by Anonymousreply 533February 1, 2024 2:26 PM

Well, yes. I am a bit overwhelmed. But it is my hope that you, dear readers, are decidedly not.

by Anonymousreply 534February 1, 2024 2:31 PM

I was invited to Super Bowl party by someone who has known me for years and knows I don't have an athletic bone in my body and not an inkling of interest in sports. It can't be my sparkling personality because I am the epitome of an introvert. I was baffled by the invite. Therefore, and thusly, I politely declined.

Maybe you make some mean Buffalo chicken wings?

“I will be unable to attend as I’ll be outreaching the poorer members of my tribe at Home Depot.”

by Anonymousreply 537February 1, 2024 4:16 PM

Actually, I think you are on the right track, r536. He knows I always bring a big pan of something homemade to large get togethers. His friends are too loud. I like quiet. They will have to get some good grub elsewhere.

by Anonymousreply 538February 1, 2024 4:26 PM

I called the company that rents me the machine, and, mirabile dictu, they will not only sell it to me, but they will apply the previously paid rental payments to the price*, making it essentially free. You’d think the insurance company would have steered me in this direction. Assholes.

*subject to confirmation

I wonder if this supplier would have continued to bill my insurance company after the machine is “paid off” and how long my insurance company’s intermediary would have continued to bill me $120 per month .

I might have to call the state AG.

by Anonymousreply 539February 1, 2024 4:52 PM

You're working on my last whelm, r539.

“Please be more boring,” said the poster who wrote: “ But many of the smells encountered in the fridge are due to volatile fatty acids.

I have dealt with the cpap rigmarole myself but luckily my insurance covered purchase price 80%. However, they will not cover my crown next month even though I have enhanced dental coverage. Insurance is the biggest racket around.

by Anonymousreply 542February 1, 2024 6:46 PM

R539, now buy a spare machine and submit it as your claim. I always have a working spare CPAP, it's come in handy, like when my previous model was recalled and the replacement took weeks to arrive.

by Anonymousreply 543February 1, 2024 7:56 PM

The CPAP provider says they automatically stop billing after 10 payments, so it’s an installment purchase rather than a rental.

by Anonymousreply 544February 1, 2024 8:14 PM

R39 et al. That's how my payment plan was set up when I initially got my CPAP machine. I paid a bill for 10 months, after that, the bitch is all mine. Don't worry, they'll still screw you over with the cost of replacement parts i.e. hose, head piece, reservoir etc.

by Anonymousreply 545February 1, 2024 8:25 PM

I hurt my bad knee getting up after a meeting. Took 5 steps and had a weird charlie horse and cracking in the front of the kneecap. Thank goodness I have my surgical consult for knee replacement next week. It's braced up and feeling better now. I hope I don't need crutches for the opera this weekend although we are on the mezzanine.

Despite my very detailed "delivery instructions" that included a description of my house and car, my groceries were delivered to the wrong house. I recognized my neighbor's house in the photo and went and fetched my groceries. I reduced Tara's tip. Tara may be dyslexic, the house number she delivered to was my house number reversed.

Amazon won't post my review unless I edit it. They won't tell me, specifically, what was wrong. I'm guessing they don't like that I put what price I paid, before tax.

The main part of my review was an expiration date that is in August (i.e., only a few months down the road).

I said, in the review, that I won't do a return b/c Amazon takes too long to credit you. That may have been offensive to poor Amazon.

I might edit and leave in the expiration date part.

by Anonymousreply 553February 2, 2024 4:29 PM

I went to Walmart last night b/c they were the only store that had the type of batteries that I needed. It seems dark in there, compared to Target's cornea-frying lighting.

by Anonymousreply 554February 2, 2024 7:45 PM

r550 now I want to know if it's because Original Jardiance gal got too skinny

by Anonymousreply 555February 2, 2024 7:55 PM

It’s true!

by Anonymousreply 556February 2, 2024 7:56 PM

Walmart reduced lighting years ago to save money so its billionaires could get more billions. A couple of the Walmarts in my area were repurposed Caldors.

Caldor stores were built in 60s and 70s (a few were repurposed WT Grants) when customer satisfaction was a thing. They were well lit, had large aisles, carpeting in clothing areas, decent dressing rooms, etc. Walmart took them over.

Then one day Walmart ripped out the ceilings, took out half the lighting, left the rafters exposed and moved all the shelves together so aisles were much more narrow, then ripped out carpeting, got rid of lbackground music. Now they’re dark, dingy, overcrowded, and designed to make people sad and angry. They got rid of security, too.

They used to have good sales. Then they stopped. Like Target they remove most holiday stuff days before the actual holiday. In the last holiday stuff would be left on shelves with 50% off signs. The following week anything left on shelves were moved together marked 75% off.

Now most is removed with a sliver of stuff placed in the discount section after holiday. Most holiday stuff is removed, packed up and warehoused a few days ahead of the holiday, to be returned to shelves the following year.

We sued to have consumer watchdog groups, but they were infiltrated and gutted decades ago. Walmart helped infiltrate and destroy them.

Walmart used to sell common medication (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cold remedies, menthol muscle cream) for 88¢. It was actually during the 21st century.

[quote] Now they’re dark, dingy, overcrowded, and designed to make people sad and angry

Why?

by Anonymousreply 558February 2, 2024 8:15 PM

R557, why not sell holiday stuff right up to the actual holiday, eg, Christmas.

I can understand not marking stuff down, after the holidays, and then putting stuff back on the shelves , next year, though. Fewer stupid purchases just bc something’s cheap. Fewer things in the landfill.

"Light as a feather, splendid as a swan. With each new breath, I am getting younger and more beautiful. Fatness and age hold no power over me. I am drowning in my own youthful radiance."

My new daily affirmation I've been using over the past couple of weeks. It's starting to yield some results around the eye area and I've noticed increased vitality as well. Fingers crossed, I might be more fetus than man this time next year!

by Anonymousreply 567February 3, 2024 2:42 PM

That’s not an affirmation. That’s a delusion.

by Anonymousreply 568February 3, 2024 2:48 PM

Saltburn is underwhelming indeed.

by Anonymousreply 569February 3, 2024 2:50 PM

I thought the affirmation was "Light as a feather, stiff as a board". Although that may be a spell, not an affirmation.

My new Falken "Sincera" (love the name - sincere tires) tires that are supposed to be installed tomorrow morning at 9 am have yet to reach the tire store by 2 pm on Saturday. Unsurprisingly, as the tires left Buffalo, NY at 9 this morning, the tire store is just outside Boston, and it's about an 8 hour drive. The customer service person who dealt with me when I called was better than the usual phone drone: he went and looked for them in the back of the store, confirmed they weren't there, said he'd check the company computers and call me back to see if he could find out where they were, couldn't but called me back and promised to call me if they don't arrive before five so it could be rescheduled for a day next week.

Thus far: underwhelmed, and not for the first time, by e-commerce deliveries. But almost overwhelmed by the responsive response from the guy on the phone who's otherwise probably tightening lug nuts on 17 inch rims.

Kevin Lee Jacobs is showing off his Le Creuset collection on youtube. I'm jealous, he has a half dozen or more pots, I only have two. He also has a bunch of Wustof knives and I, again, only have two. I do have both the All-Clad fry pans he has so we are even there. He looks like he's lost weight, wonder if he is Ozempic-ing.

I sold all mine in 2009 and replaced it with All-Clad. All-Clad 6 quart stockpot = 4 pounds. Le Creuset 5.5 quart Dutch oven = 12 pounds.

Is Walgreens having financial problems? They've started calling to offer to refill prescriptions that have lapsed. First it was incessant texts about how you haven't refilled xyz medication, now it's "Hello, this is Sara from Walgreens, can you verify your DOB " followed by "Would you like us to go ahead and refill xyz medication for you now?". No, I don't want to you to go ahead and refill anything now, if I wanted it refilled I would have done so a month ago. Also, odd to start a conversation with "verify your DOB", you called me, maybe state what you want first before you start making demands.

I just found out Jimmy Miller, legendary producer of some of the Rolling Stones greatest music, was the stepbrother of Judith Miller, the lying NY Times writer whose front page scoop pronounced WMD were found in Iraq. Her breathless writing chronicled how a guy in a plaid shirt pointed into the distance and said, “Yeah there’s WMD over there.” Judith was fucking Scooter Libby and did the bidding of the Bush administration to “prove” the invasion of Iraq was legit. Judith and Scooter both spent time in prison, but not nearly enough. Both were rewarded with high paying jobs. Judith went on to work for Fox, OAN and a rightwing “think tank.” She was a rightwing GOP plant all along.

Judith and Jimmy’s father was a mobster. Just like Barbara Walter’s father, he was a Russian-born nightclub owner and got his children jobs in media (music media and “journalism”).

You don’t just walk into record producing jobs and reporting jobs at NY Times. Jimmy’s stepson also worked for NY Times for over 20 years, a hotbed of nepotism. (See: Maggie Haberman, the Sulzberger family)
