R32 the non verbal acting in that scene from both of them is next level. It’s by a long way Alice’s best written scene in the show but what they do with it is incredible

Joe and Kit absolutely bodied the last scene, as though them carrying the show on their shoulders wasn’t already obvious. Many of the other young actors are great too ofc.

But it is crazy how insanely well they pull off the little nonverbal moments and shifts even in nonpivotal scenes. Not denigrating their work in that last scene, it’s mind blowing (though again, wish Alice included more non repressed Charlie scenes so reviewers understood Joe was giving a purposefully restrained performance) but it was also clearly written as a “big” scene. Weirdly I find little moments like this in more innocuous scenes almost more impressive because they both have so so many of them and it feels so natural. It’s the type of thing you can’t really train.

It's going to be interesting to see both of them go more explosive with the characters, especially when they have to play out the fight before Charlie's first relapse out of the hospital and the Nick & Charlie fight.

Especially the blond kid. I think he was really good in the last scene. I didn't feel like the show was more about him. To me, Charlie is the main protagonist.

What’s always crazy to me about joe is this was his first real job and first time on camera. It’s not even like he had his professional debut on west end and killed it, which would still be really impressive but he grew up doing local theatre so a little more in line with that. He went from his only experience being local productions of stage shows where acting is meant to be a little exaggerated, projecting voice and facial expressions so people can see and hear you, to giving an incredible, soft and understated onscreen performance with almost all his highlights being subtle nonverbal ones (since Alice can’t write a script). Between that and his fairly working/middle class upbringing, really highlights the importance of open calls because he is a phenomenal talent

So that's why she can't show solo scenes of Charlie's struggling like she did with Nick in S1 because she's keeping it subtle before the big reveal. Subtle and Heartstopper do not go together.

This isn't going to happen, but what Alice should be doing for S3 is cutting out the pork (Imogen doesn't need a storyline; Isaac already had the asexual realization so if you want to continue that storyline continue it with Jenny, the better actor; don't give Elle any "life at Lambert" shit because Yaz can't carry a storyline) and giving all of that time spent on side characters to Charlie (therapy session scenes, for one). Incorporate all of the supporting actors into the Nick and Charlie scenes, but give the 1:1 scenes with Joe and Kit to the strongest of the lot (Cori, Kizzy, Will). Yeah, shows usually need variety and multiple storylines to work, but I don't think Heartstopper is one of those shows. The strength solely lies in Joe and Kit.

More realistically, she should at least scale the show back to what it was in S1 (Nick/Charlie, Tao/Elle, Tara/Darcy), but that's not going to happen, either.

I actually thought the Nick and Charlie kiss in s1 was MORE poignant because we saw Nick trying to figure it out behind the scenes and struggling internally and deciding to go for it. Similarly I think seeing Charlie hit rock bottom and Nick cotton on to what’s happening would’ve been more poignant and compelling if we had seen him struggling alone with it for months and it being clear that this has been a long term problem for him. As is, the resolution feels like it’s going to be neatly baked into the issue, because the episode after the audience becomes aware of the depth of Charlie’s issues he’ll go inpatient and heal. Having a longer period of seeing him struggle would’ve made his eventual recovery much more compelling and frankly given Joe way more to work with though he killed it anyway

I agree that Charlie feels like the main character. The show starts and ends with him. In S1 he had a lot of solo scenes with his teacher and his friends. We saw more of Charlie’s life in season 1 than Nicks. Season 2 was more about the “final” coming out and how it affected Nick. We learned about his homophobic brother and saw his father. The show felt more like they were both main characters. The way Alice is writing the show though is not great. She is not showing much of the internal struggle (like many pointed out) that Charlie is dealing with. She is not showing the reality of young bisexual/gay men. The story is interesting in concept but the execution is not great.

We also had a lot of nick solo scenes in s1, they had nearly comparable screentime. I actually wish they had flipped the situstion this season with nicks struggle being more external, coming out to others, and Charlie’s being more internal solo scenes. But instead Alice gave Nick the external and gave Charlie fuck all.
