Pumpkin spice overwhelms. Not editionworthy.

It’s still terribly dry here in the Pacific Northwest, after a very dry year, and I now worry about the returning salmon. The cedars are looking really stressed, too, due to drought, and all if this is admittedly very whelming indeed, but at least the clouds have started movng in, making the light and colours dull again, which is more along the lines of what we’re used to.

I want to be underwhelmed by our usual endless grey drizzle!

And yet, as it's added to more and more products and becomes an increasingly tiresome cliche, pumpkin spice is inherently underwhelming.

I can proudly state that I have neither purchased or consumed anything labeled as "Pumpkin Spice".

Today I bought two nice, sweet pineapples. I cut off the crown, cut off the skin, took out the cores, and now they're in nice slices in my fridge.

I made a strawberry cheesecake for a family dinner, and everyone raved about it. My dad loved it and now wants to know when I will make another one - just for him.

They brought the following equipment: a huge bucket truck, a huge truck to hold the trees they cut down for me, a bobcat claw loader to remove the branches, and heavy duty stump grinder.

I hopped in my car at 10 am today, eager to be productive and run errands. And immediately got a flat tire.

I drove to the Firestone about a mile down the road on the flat tire, with people rolling down their windows and yelling "Hey, you have a flat tire," at me the length of the drive.

They got me in pretty quick over there at the Firestone. Which was a really pleasant surprise. However, because it's an all-wheel drive, when you replace one tire you have to replace all four so that the tread-depths all match.

So now I have four new tires, and Firestone has $1126.

I spent the rest of the day resting.

My kittenTokyo has entered that kitten phase where they lose their minds. She's jumping up on furniture like she's playing "floor is lava" and zooming around like she just snorted Adderall. And her mom, bless her, is playing along. I think it is very sweet of her to indulge her kitten in such a robust playful way.

This started in my bedroom this morning. I felt very whelmed by the activities. They are now here in the den where I am attempting to have my coffee. Again, whelming to be around it, and I need them to get out of the den right now.

But I'm glad they are having a fun time. Tokyo had been very shy and skittish for the first several weeks and it's nice to see her coming out of her shell and grabbing the brass ring of life a little bit.

Considering buying Apple's new series 7 watch to replace my series 4 I bought in 2019. My current watch only last about 5 hours before I have to put it back on the charger. I only use a few functions on it such as heart rate and fitness tracker. Should get $60 for a trade in but still is $400 worth it?

Growing up, everyone I knew had a nail in their kitchen wall with a fly swatter hanging from it. Those fly sweaters stayed the same for years. Now I need to buy a swatter because it’s Fly Dying In The House Time and all the revues I see tells me “don’t buy…it breaks..,it doesn’t land on fly….didn’t work even once…”

No they’re fucking NOT. the first zinnia seeds I bought flowered and looked ok, but no butterflies. Why? Because I was told, they’re hybrids. Since it’s humid here in sumner I bought zinnia seeds that said they were more mildew resistant. What they didn’t say was “we are hybrids, therefore we’ve been messed with. We’re been bred to look good, not to give nectar, so…..no nectar.”

So I made sure to buy “heirloom” zinnia after that. Great they look good, now I’ll plant them outside. Oops it rained last night…land there’s foggy mist tonight and ……we’re now a mass of yellow-grey leaves turning brown and shriveling up from mildew.

R66, it's all relative, as R67 implied, but I really like to look over my health tracker. I love seeing how much deep sleep I get per night, how long I was awake when I woke up in the mile of the night, whether my cardio fitness has improved or at least stayed the same, and it keeps me on track with my activity every day. I was looking at the 6-month graph the other day, and I saw when my grandma died this summer, everything went way down but has since rebounded. I feel it helps me maintain my health somewhat.

I also like that if I am cooking or something and I hear an email or call come in, I can glance at my wrist to see what it was. I can control Apple Music with it while driving, and I have some limited ability to control my tv with it. To me, it's worth it. If money was a little tight I'd do one of those 'Pay in 4 installments' things to spread it out without interest.

I have a 7 and it stays charged for around 36 hours.

Around here, that sort of thing is common enough to be quite underwhelming for the rest of us, but her intensity undermines the point of the lovely, somnolence-inducing thread(s).

My own comment is that my shoes squeak on the floor of the office I'm working in as a consultant. I don't really care, but it's quite noisy with every step.

I bought pure caffeine powder for my workouts because I made the calculations and it's a lot cheaper than the cheapest capsules on the market. I went and poured it from the bag into a pill container so it would be more practical to use on a daily basis, but the powder is so fine, it spilled all over the table. The more I read about the places some of you live the more determined I am to stay where I am when I retire.

R122 i too have noticed these. They are particularly noticeable in the early morning hours, I see a lot when I go for my morning run. It wasnt like this 2- 3 years ago. Similar to homelessness problems in the suburbs, it is another example of the post pandemic societal malaise.

Based on my observation of my older family members, one of the most important things for one's quality of life as one ages is living in an area with lots of great doctors and hospitals nearby.

My family of origin all stayed in the exact same rural area since my Mennonite forbears came from Russia, and the doctoring there is awful. People are afraid to go to the hospital because a lot of patients don't come out alive, and die there of something unrelated to the reason they went in. Also, specialists. It seems like a trip to a specialist is an all-day affair, 50-100 miles in another direction and back.

My Dad moved to a city when he turned 18 as part of his 1-W service, so our family has had access to good schools and healthcare. My grandparents, uncles/aunts and cousins still in rural Kansas have all had questionable care from local doctors who are only there because of government programs that pay part of their schooling if they agree to practice in rural hospitals for a couple of year. And, as you say, if there's anything other than simple emergencies or specialist care, it's hours on the road.

I was 220 lbs before the pandemic and most of it was muscle. I completely slacked and didn’t go to the gym for three years. I’ve always had a little bit of a problem keeping my weight up, but I actually fell to 190. Well, I didn’t get on a scale for months again until I realized my UNDERWEAR was slipping off me and I dropped into the high 160s. 🫣

I hate my body. Not in a body dysmorphia way. I just hate that it’s turned on me and does this shit to me. And I hate that I’m complaining about losing weight. I’m not sick. I’ve been checked out. Ok, I got us off track. Let me redeem myself and try to return us to normal programming. I lost a bottle of soy sauce that I thought was sitting on my dining room table because I pull it out so frequently that I got lazy and didn’t return it to the kitchen. I also have a small cat that steals things and they disappear for up to two weeks and then he usually returns them to the bathtub (no clue why. But he’s stolen things like an electric toothbrush, a microfiber cloth I left sitting on the kitchen counter after I’d cleaned it, and even my eyeglasses and I had to wear an old pair of there year old glasses before they finally were returned to the bathtub a few days later). R172, I did. I had been losing a lot of things for a while and I started to worry. First I thought, oh, that’s odd, why am I always misplacing things? Then that worry slowly turned to “oh no…no, no, no!” and I was afraid I was having early stages of some type of dementia or a neurocognitive problem. But nope. I finally realized what was going on. If I was holding something and walking from one room to another, I’d have to stop, put down what I was holding and pull this small, extremely bad cat off the top of the toaster oven or out of a cabinet where the cat food bag he ripped into is as he was helping himself to second breakfasts. Then I’d walk off completely exasperated and forget what I had in my hands and where I was going with it.

I think that a single question could easily be added to most cognitive screening tools.

A woman, like many other condo dwellers in our association, just walked clear across my front yard to get to the informal dog run on the other side of my house. Her dog shit in my yard, and she didn't clean it up. If I say anything, I'm the number one pain-in-the-ass in the association. Most of them have dogs, and they all go to the dog run.

I own the condo, but I do not own the land. It drives me crazy. Most of them bring bags and the clean up after their dogs. She, and a few others, don't.

I don’t even refrigerate my butter, eggs, milk, or raw chicken. I only buy organic and I don’t like thinking what refrigeration can do to them. They aren’t refrigerated in the wild. Sure, I’ve had a few upset tummies, 215 trips to the emergency room for life threatening food poisoning this year alone, and I had to have 3/4 of my small intestines removed due to necrosis.

My Siamese cat used to be a hoarder when he was younger. Stole all kinds of stuff to study and relay info back to the mother ship. I found his stashes several times in the front hall closet. Particular obsessions with twist ties, qtips, buttons and cat food lids.

Several years ago, my parents bought a used golf cart and fixed it up so they could putt around the neighborhood. They are dog people, but a decade ago, they got a friendly stray cat that was supposed to be a 'mouser' for my dad's large garage. My mom wanted to just call her "Cat" since she thought of her more as a farm animal, but my dad gave her more of a real name, Kit-Kat. She used to spend a lot of time in the garage, but as she's gotten older, she prefers to be inside the house, with my dad, to my mom's chagrin. But when she was younger, she used to wait until everyone was asleep, then leave the house through the dog door and enter the garage through the cat flap. Because my parents always parked the golf cart in the garage, they would just leave the keys in the ignition. My dad's cat used to hop in their golf cart after they fell asleep, hit the garage door button, and drive across the tracks and on up to the Country Club, where she would collect 'lost' golf balls from the afternoon. When the Golf Pro arrived just before dawn every day, she would sell the balls back to him for $5 a bag, which was usually all she had, one bag. The Pro nicknamed her Kit Caddy because of the cart. She was proud to earn an honest living without having to kill other animals, as she didn't like mousing. She would then drive back home on the back roads and park the golf cart just as she'd found it, and leave the garage via the cat flap and enter the house via the dog door to cuddle in bed with my dad as everyone was just waking up for the day. When my parents got a new bed several months ago, they found nine $5 bills stuffed in the corner of the bed frame.

Oh Lord, r187! It’s snows heavily where I live and it was the middle of February when I found the fiver in my cat’s bed. Did he have to steal my keys, unlock two deadbolts, sneak out to the detached garage, unlock it, unlock the jeep, open the garage door and then put it in 4 wheel drive to back out because that’s the only way you can get out of our alley?

He was a street cat so I highly doubt he got the money washing golf balls. He was probably either running a three-card monte scam or selling crushed up aspirin to dumb college kids and telling them it was pure Colombian coke.

But where is the rest of the money? He either has it saved in an account, probably something offshore because he’s a cat and doesn’t have a SSN or ID to open a US bank account, or he’s spending it on hookers and other terrible stuff.

Oh! 😳 R191, this is an absolutely true story. The little cat that stole the soy sauce bottle has been obsessed with watching me shower since he came home with me. At first he would scream his head off like I was being murdered in the shower, so a kind old cat lady told me to sing to him, but sing something gentle so it wouldn’t upset him. The first and last time I tried, for some reason, the only song lyrics I could think of or remember were “Fuck the Pain Away” by Peaches, so I tired singing that like a lulllaby, but the more I sang, the louder he yowled and the louder I got until I was screaming the lyrics in the shower. Time has gone by and he’s chilled about me showering, but several months ago, I was getting ready to jump in the shower. He was sitting on the closed lid of the toilet, I was naked, brushing my teeth, and I saw something he had knocked onto the floor, so I bent over to pick it to. And as I bent over, I felt a small, furry paw reach out and touch my balls.

I really was shocked that he did that. But now you have me convinced he learned it from the bigger cat whose probably out touching balls on the mean streets for five bucks a pop.

I get "USPS Informed Delivery" sent to my email showing a picture of what mail I'll be getting each day. The one this morning was a letter from the IRS. I was a little worried as to what it was but it was acknowledgement of my amended tax return from May. I owed $1.49 in interest but since it was so small they reduced the amount owed to zero.

I saw an ad for cinnamon bun cake mix and thought of buying it to make cinnamon bun cupcakes, but it makes 24 cupcakes and that’s just too many cinnamon bun cupcakes. A small box that makes 12 would be good. I can’t make the mix and throw half of it away because it goes against my inner poverty.

Can you make 24 and freeze half of them, R203? They seem like the sort of thing that could be frozen and enjoyed later. I end up freezing a lot of what I cook because it's not always easy to make small portions. The bonus is that, when I freeze entrees, I have alternatives when I don't feel like cooking.

The dog I meet on my morning run is a bit obsessed with me. I see her out with her owner almost every morning. The second the dog spots me regardless how far I am, she gets so excited and runs towards me. I ran with my partner and she ignores him completely. If her back is turned and she hears my voice she turns immediately and runs to me.

Is that normal for dogs?

A friend of mine's dog fell in love with me. Fortunately, we lived in the same building, and my friend let me hang out with and walk her dog anytime I wanted, which turned out to be every day. He was a great dog.

I have a Raleigh road biked I've owned since the mid 80's. Been meaning to take it to the dump or find a place that will recycle old bikes. Even though I don't ride it anymore due to back issues I'm having trouble letting it go.

It got me through college when I worked odd jobs in the summer and recently used it to save time hiking Bond Cliff in the White Mountains even though it was a little dangerous because of the narrow tires and rough trail. It's been sitting in the back of my car for three months. If I bring it back into my condo I'll end up turning it back into a clothes rack.

I tried eBay just once, because I was afraid I'd get cheated. I paid for an item and never received it. I filed a complaint but was never reimbursed. Luckily, I lost only a small amount of money. But the experience convinced me, fairly or not, that I was right to avoid eBay.

If anything, eBay is known for siding with the buyer too often.

R313, oh she was. We both had motorcycles, which is probably less coincidence and more why we became friends, and she also had a Wonder Woman costume (and she was gorgeous! Kinda the perfect Wonder Woman). Well I had a Batman cowl but no Batman suit so she said she was going to make me one and then we were going to ride around the city at night looking for would be thieves just to scare the hell out of them. I was pretty sure we’d be on the news, not for being weird costumed vigilante heroes, but for being weird costumed vigilante heroes that got shot (sorry-whelm) so I was secretly thankful we never did.

But then she MADE me a leatherman’s harness compete with little sequins because she didn’t know where to find metal studs to put on it and she insisted I wear it under a WHITE work shirt to graduation! You could absolutely see it though the white shirt but I wore it because I had a gown for graduation and I had to wear the gown to lunch with my family and sneak into the bathroom at a restaurant to take it off and wrap it up in the gown.

She was really an incredibly fun person. I’m sure she still is. But I haven’t seen her in years and she has kids now. But she was a crafty bitch.

And she’s a pediatrician. So much whelm here that I didn’t mean to cause. I guess the moral of the story is all your doctors were dumb college kids at one point and probably did some dumb ass stuff along the way.

I can't believe I binged on Hallmark Christmas movies all morning and into the afternoon.

I can't believe that Halloween is more than a week away, and yet Hallmark's "Countdown to Christmas" began Friday (Oct. 20). It will be Christmas movies 24/7 from now until January 2nd.

I love the wooden acting of the some of the leading men on Hallmark movies.

I LOVE Hallmark and Lifetime channel Xmas movies. Lifetime is obviously lower budget.

I will never buy another Maytag dishwasher again! This is the second adjustable upper rack I had to replace due to the plastic deteriorating in the mechanism that adjusts the height. Cost to replace just the mechanism and associated parts 250.00! The kicker is I'd never use the adjustments! I ordered a standard non-adjustable rack off of eBay for 65 bucks it should fit.

I bought a cheap (such a deal - it may be fake or very vintage!) Saint Laurent jacket.

The shape is blousy and oversized - although it’s cropped. The dominant color is gold - it photographed amber - and there are big sailing ships. My neighbors are summer weekend residents. I know they have security cameras because they call my husband every once in a while and say their cameras notified them if something (it’s usually very loud illegal fireworks being set off by cop who lives behind them).

Sometimes when I’m working in my flower bed that’s close to their house I hear the sound of kitchenware rattling. As if someone is washing dishes or rearranging a cutlery drawer. I know they’re not home because there aren’t any cars there.

Beecher's World's Best Mac n Cheese frozen entrees were BOGO at supermarket. That's a great deal as they are normally $13-14 each. I got two deals, so four entrees for a total of $28. Well worth the price, good stuff.

I would find paying $14 for some frozen macaroni and cheese rather whelming.

I know it seems improbable but it really is good which is how they get away with charging that much. I believe the Beecher's is also available at Costco. They've added new varieties with broccoli etc but I've only ever had the original just cheese one. The Fresh Market also carries it. But if you are in the vicinity of a Publix this week, grab a BOGO deal and try it for only $7 each. Amy's entrees are now $6-ish and no where near as good.

Every Thanksgiving since the late 1980s I've made this jello-y side dish called Cranberry Mousse. Don't know why it was called "mousse" because it's not smooth. Very tasty. Last year I didn't make it although I did have all the ingredients. I was just texting with a friend who has been a T'giving guest of mine for years and he asked if I would be making "that cranberry jello stuff". It warms my heart that my "jello stuff" was missed last year.

Cranberry Mousse

1 20 oz can crushed pineapple in heavy syrup, well drained and RESERVE JUICE

1 6 oz strawberry jello

1 cup water

1 16 oz can WHOLE cranberry sauce (NOT JELLIED)

2 cups sour cream

3 tablespoons lemon juice (I only use 1-2 tbl)

1/2 cup nuts

Heat pineapple juice and water to boiling, add jello until dissolved . Stir in cranberry sauce until it all melts. Add lemon juice. Cool til mixture thickens slightly. Add crushed pineapple, sour cream and nuts, stir well. Pour into 9x13 pan or big bowl. Let set overnight. Tart and sweet.

If I get a bit hungry in the afternoon, one little bagel toasted with either a schmear of plain cream cheese on the cinnamon raisin or a dab of peanut butter on the plain and I'm satisfied. I had body work done on my car this spring. The shop owner is a cute bear and I'm not as a rule into bears.

I've been hearing and reading rave reviews of Elizabeth Debeckie 's portrayal of the late Princess Diana in the Netflix series The Crown however, I find her portrayal quite cringeworthy.

I just watched a 1949 radio interview with Joan Crawford and her kids on Christmas Eve. The children were so scripted and she truly was insane.
