Why is ESPN2 lingering on the Pegula/Gauff post-match speech when there’s actual tennis going on?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 3, 2023 12:48 AM |
Because they’re Americans.

As I posted in the last thread regarding Ons - is the PTPA a cause or a symptom?

I LOVE how some of the people who end up on camera/on the jumbo screen get such a kick out of it and dance or wave. And others just sit there, don't respond, and seem like they want it over as soon as possible.

Speaking of the company On running, it's pretty bad that Swiatek doesn't wear their shoes. Pretty much saying that the shoes aren't good enough even though they're primarily a running shoes company.

I’d be the latter, R15.

It's like Under Armour - when they blew up and athletes and college teams started wearing their apparel, a lot didn't wear the shoes because they were considered sub-par.

Is there really nothing else to watch besides boring-ass Zverev and Dimitrov?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 3, 2023 1:32 AM |
I mean, there ARE bugs other than Covid, but still, it does kind of seem fishy.
Totally anecdotal and a sample size of one, but I have a friend who is sick with a summer cold right now and he did get tested and didn't have Covid.

God I love Grigor but he just does this every fucking time. Just gives us hope and then it's some physical tweak which triggers a complete, total mental collapse. It's like being a Kvitova fan, or a Madison Keys fan. They just never come thru. (I know Kvitova has won majors.)
On a brighter note, Baez lifted his shirt and showed his ripped, smooth, Argentinian stomach. And in so doing, showed a thick bulge running towards his hip. I'll bet he throws a mean fuck.

R89, I posted something similar several threads ago. When you look at them closely they look nothing alike, but in movement on court they are similar.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 3, 2023 4:02 AM |
Fascinating how the male players who are doing well are really dominating. Fritz, Meddy, Carlitos, they're just not dropping many games. Surprised to see Novak lose 2 sets last night, but I never doubted he'd come back. Once-in-a-generation player, he is.
But yeah, these late night early rounds have been pretty boring so far. Still waiting for that electric 2am match, 5-all in the 5th set...
by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 3, 2023 4:11 AM |
It's quite possible that Iga had an existing shoe contract which is why she's not wearing On tennis shoes.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | September 3, 2023 4:11 AM |
R93 She was with Asics before - but for apparel too. I don't think they would have had a separate shoe and apparel contract.

Shelton started playing better, but Paul and some really untimely errors. And he failed to break at 3-0 40-15 to go up 4-0 and two breaks which would have sealed the set. And Shelton didn't just have two huge aces to erase those break points. Paul was in at least one of them.

R171 novaxx in his pre game interview said he has practiced with Gojo and how they are from the same region. He made it seem like they are best pals. I suspect it's lies from Novaxx who enjoys making it appear like everything is kosher

Peppa seems to want to try to hit EVERYTHING as hard as possible and can't accept anything otherwise. It makes her inconsistent but seems to be what Iga has trouble with - she likes some time to set up her shots.

Ostapenko on electronic line calling: “Honestly, I don’t believe in it 100%." Gives that slightly smug, knowing laugh/smile as she says that.
Seems that the key to beating Iga is rushing her constantly. It seems to keep her off-kilter even on balls she would normally deal with fine.

I'm surprised that Iga is so young at 22. She seems mature for her age (in a good way).
But all bow down to Queen Aryna, the she hulk! I've liked her since I watched a flirty interview with her a Wublev (she was flirty toward him, not the other way round lol - I thought he looked a bit squicked out. One of the fam?)

She has 4 slams at 22, so she's not a one-slam wonder even if 3 of them are RG. I think you have to see her on clay to showcase her game. Even Woz who was no. 1 for a long time is a one-slam wonder.

by Anonymous | reply 232 | September 4, 2023 3:11 PM |
I could see Peppa possibly beating Coco, losing to her in a close match, or getting beat fairly bad. Peppa is an inconsistent wildcard. In the end, I see some sort of mundane win for Coco, like 7-5, 6-3. Peppa needs to get into the match early. Coco doesn't have the mental scars that Iga does in relation to Peppa.

They'll sometimes close them for heat/humidity if the heat index is above a certain amount, and they'll close them if the whether forecast indicates there's a good chance of rain/storms.

There's always been fist pumping and "COOOME OOONs!! and other demonstrations, but never this many players this amount of the time.
My unscientific hot take is it's the result of smart phones, the internet, and social media. People are SO used to feedback for everything they do, used to getting a response when they doing something - anything, so in a way they're "addicted." They feel like they didn't do anything and they're not see if it doesn't get a response. The fist pumping, yelling, etc., encourages the response.
But, again, there's been boisterous fist pumpers before the "modern" age. But it seems that there's more people who MUST be doing something all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 333 | September 5, 2023 2:58 AM |
Your hot take is wrong. Jimmy Connors was doing this from the very beginning of the 70s. Many followed.

by Anonymous | reply 347 | September 5, 2023 10:38 AM |
R333, my take is different. In the 1960s and '70s, sports broadcasts used a limited number of static cameras. Fans usually didn't see themselves on camera; there were no giant images of matches broadcast in the stadiums; no dramatic close-ups of players, and often no reaction shots. But all of those things were introduced and, over time, the players (and the fans) became more performative. They knew that they were on camera all the time.
by Anonymous | reply 348 | September 5, 2023 1:15 PM |
I think it’s also monkey see, monkey do. Lower ranked players see Nadal and Serena showboating and gassing themselves up between points. They then do the same to put on airs of being a tough contender to the viewers at home, and eventually everyone up and down the draw is fist pumping and ¡vamos!-ing all over the court.
by Anonymous | reply 349 | September 5, 2023 1:50 PM |

More players are taking the US college route, where there is lots of fist pumping, chest thumping and shouting.
Listen, the NYC crowd gets more into the match when a player is inviting them in. So the smart players do just that, except players like Iga, Keys and Tommy for whom it’s not their style.
by Anonymous | reply 352 | September 5, 2023 2:10 PM |
The reason Coco’s match isn’t in prime time is apparently she lobbied hard for the noon slot. Not sure if it’s because she’s been playing so much tennis with her doubles or because she knows she can handle the heat better than most players.

I don't recall Chrissie or Steffi fist pumping and screaming "COME ON!!!"
by Anonymous | reply 354 | September 5, 2023 2:24 PM |
Like grunting, fist-pumping started slowly (Connors was the first popularizer) and gradually gained ground. I remember Martina N emulating Connors's fist-pumping at the end of the match when she surprisingly beat Graf in the semis to make the 1991 US Open final. Now its fist-pumping after every point, even if it's on an opponent's unforced error. I've even seen a fist-pump after an opponent's double fault.

[quote]The International Tennis Federation (ITF) is the governing body of world tennis, wheelchair tennis, and beach tennis. It was founded in 1913 as the International Lawn Tennis Federation by twelve national tennis associations. As of 2016, there are 211 national and six regional associations that make up the ITF's membership. The ITF's governance responsibilities include maintaining and enforcing the rules of tennis, regulating international team competitions, promoting the game, and preserving the sport's integrity via anti-doping and anti-corruption programs. The ITF partners with the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) to govern professional tennis. The ITF organizes the Grand Slam events, annual team competitions for men (Davis Cup), women (Billie Jean King Cup), and mixed teams (Hopman Cup), as well as tennis and wheelchair tennis events at the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games on behalf of the International Olympic Committee. The ITF sanctions the Grand Slam tennis tournaments as well as circuits that span age ranges (junior, professional men and women, and seniors) as well as disciplines (wheelchair tennis; beach tennis). In addition to these circuits, the ITF also maintains rankings for juniors, seniors, wheelchair and beach tennis.

I remember watching Ostapenko in 2017 when she won the French Open. I couldn't believe that a player with that many weaknesses could win a Major, but she somehow managed to do it. Now, six years later, I don't think she's improved on any of those glaring weaknesses. It's sad and I'm wondering if winning the French was actually bad for her in that she lost any desire to improve. But, really, for her to be pushing second serves in today at 71 mph? Geesh.

Troubling ‘US Open bug’ taking down top tennis players
Even the top players in tennis are no match for this bug.
A mystery “US Open bug” is making the rounds among star athletes at this year’s tournament, resulting in shocking upsets and withdrawals as the athletes struggle to fight on the court through coughing fits and stomach aches.
“I’m a zombie because I have a flu,” Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur, 29, said at a news conference on Thursday after defeating Linda Noskova in three sets.
The No. 5 seed was visibly unwell during the match, and was seen coughing and sometimes even struggling to reach the ball on difficult shots.
“I’m taking a lot of medicine,” the No. 5 seed admitted at the conference, adding that she “basically took every medication” the tournament doctors could offer.
Jabeur – who was upset by Zheng Qinwen of China over the weekend – is one of many players felled by the so-called “US Open bug” since the tournament opened at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Aug. 28.
Emil Ruusuvuori, 24, of Finland, withdrew ahead of his first-round match due to an unspecified illness.
Austrian Dominic Thiem, 30, subsequently retired in the second set of his second-round match on Wednesday after collapsing onto the net with a stomach issue, the outlet reported.
Czech player Petra Kvitová, 33, also complained of stomach pains before ultimately losing to Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday, Tennis World reported.
“I got the us open bug.. in a way still feels like I’m in the tournament but at home,” Tennys Sandgren, 32, who failed to advance past the qualifiers, tweeted on Thursday.
“Def a bug going around [at the Open,” he added in a separate post.
Also on Thursday, Polish player Hubert Hurkacz, 26, struggled on the court and was treated by medical staff before ultimately falling to Jack Draper, the New York Times reported.
During the match, sniffs, coughs, and other signs of illness were heard throughout the tennis grounds, the outlet added.
Players have also been spotted with tissues in their bags.
Off the court, legendary former player and tennis analyst John McEnroe reported on the second day of the tournament that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
“I’m watching the US Open from home & can’t wait to get back to work soon,” McEnroe said via ESPN.
McEnroe’s diagnosis and the proliferation of troubling symptoms among players has sparked concerns that the tournament may be a superspreader for COVID Pirola variant, which experts say is spreading fast.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | September 5, 2023 6:26 PM |
Players – who are in close quarters and share many facilities – are not required to test for COVID at the Open, the Times noted.
Spectators are also not asked to provide proof of vaccination, wear masks, or test prior to attending.
“It would be nice if those players who feel bad would wear masks or something like that. I don’t know if it’s something related to COVID, but usually at sporting events like this, these things can spread easily,” No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek, 22, said ahead of the tournament’s second week, according to Tennis World.
“I’ve already had a few colds this season and it’s had a big impact on me, so at a grand slam I definitely don’t want to make those mistakes. I also watch what I eat. It’s important for me to keep an eye on everything and prevent it,” she added.

A lot of it is just an inside joke. The other half of it is that even if he's not the most handsome or hottest guy with the hottest body, people think he's sexy because they project a bro-y, obnoxious, untamed sexuality due to him having a kid so young and dating skanks. Being an unrepentant whore is hot.

It's one of the reasons I started to stan Rafa. It made no sense to me that the player who was clearly the best in the world (this was 2008-09) couldn't get the respect he deserved. Geography question. What are the tallest buildings in the non-Manhattan NYC boroughs? They show all these amazing shots of Manhattan during USO coverage and you really notice how "low" Queens is. I know that's expected; Manhattan is the business center traditionally. But how "high" do Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, even Staten Island get. Business or residential? I'd imagine the airports prevent anything from being built too tall in the outer boroughs.

I was watching some classic tennis matches on a YouTube channel. I caught one of little he-man Justine Henin. Is it me or is Iga's game and style exactly like JH. It's almost like Iga has copied her

Someone upthread posted a little video with Ostapenko, Kasatkina and K's girlfriend, the figure skater Natalia Zabiiako. They were talking about Sabalenka and they said she should have been #1 a long time ago - and they hope when she takes it, she'll stay #1 for a long time.
No love lost for Swiatek? who always praises men goats but never Serena? Is our Iga a widely disliked mean girl?

Being blunt, I don't think a mean girl but an unpopular girl. Iga reminds me of a few geeky/awkward scientist girls I know of. They are never going to be popular or loved because they're so off-putting.

R455 Carlos can handle it. I have high expectations for him.
by Anonymous | reply 462 | September 6, 2023 12:04 AM |
I think R461 hit the nail on the head.. Kasatkina wouldn't be bothered by the ATP fandom; she's another Nadal obsessive. And Swiatek's admiration of Serena Williams is strong enough that she was afraid to meet her, even once she (Swiatek) was #1 in the world. She said she felt like a child whenever she was in proximity to her.
Ostapenko and Kasatkina disliked each other for years until bonding more recently. In time, Swiatek will form more friendships with other players. By her own admission, she found it hard to make small talk or eye contact with other people until she was in her late teens. That wasn't too long ago.

Iga is up her own arse. Serena was a far greater champion, has more wins than iga will ever have and was not acting this way.

[quote]Iga is not shy. She is aloof and acts like her shit don't stink
She's an introvert and I guarantee you, pretty down on herself. Very anxious and stressed out. Trust me, I know people like that and what they think about themselves. Just because she likes and values reading books for example doesn't mean she thinks she's better than other people - I think that's your own projection.

Huh? Who said anything about books? Actually my assessment of Iga is based her poor sportsmanship. The way she sneers down at opponents at the net, yhe cold handshake when she loses a match . Also the constant crying about being bullied. All the girls have to deal with online trolls, Iga thinks she is special

"I was watching some classic tennis matches on a YouTube channel. I caught one of little he-man Justine Henin. Is it me or is Iga's game and style exactly like JH. It's almost like Iga has copied her."
Yes and no. They're both offensive-minded and look to be on their front foot and not defending. They're hard, full swing forehands are somewhat similar. And I guess even though Justine had a one-handed back hand and Iga has a two-handed backhand - they both can slap from that side as well. Justine had a more all-court game in my opinion - utilizing drop shots, lobs, serve and volley more than Iga. She also played better defense - much better slice backhand helped. And, she was much more comfortable playing against big-hitting players and punching it out with them.

I’m surprised how personable Ostapenko was in that vlog by Kasatkina. She seems like such a brat on the court, but evidently she can be a mensch and get along famously with other ladies. I’d be curious to see how much a successful player like a Sabalenka or a Medvedev is actually able to bank of their prize winnings. Even if they “live” in Monaco, they’ve got to pay something in taxes right off the bat. Then they have a team of probably at least half a dozen (trainers, physios, psychologists, etc) whom they have to not only compensate but also fly around the world all year long. The expenses must add up to the low millions annually, no?
And to wit, how do you manage to get by if you’re ranked like 100th or instead of top 10?

"Do the players get paid for each stage of the tournament they progress through? I read sablenka gets 775k for going through to the semis, does she get that PLUS another sum if she advances to the finals?"
The players get once after the tournament ends for them. Not sure if the tournament pays everyone after the entire tournament is over, or if they payout to each player as each player is eliminated. Regardless, it's only one payment. In other words, for example, they don't pay all the players who won in the first round the amount for players who lose in the second round (which they're guaranteed at that point) and then pay an additional amount for those who win again equaling the difference between the payment for second round losers and and third round losers.
$775k is not a one-time payment for Sabalenka winning the quarterfinal and advancing to the semis, separate from winning all of her previous rounds. It encompasses the five wins she's had in the tournament. Any time you see a prize money payout chart - the amounts are always the amount that a player will get for losing in a specific round, encompassing all the wins up to that point.
